Tesla has released its Universal Wall Connector, which has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector as well as an Integrated J1772 adaptor for charging electric vehicle from other brands.
The new wall connector is comparable to Tesla’s Magic Dock, which allows non-Tesla electric vehicles to be charged at Supercharger stations. The charger features the option to see charging history and energy use via the Tesla app, a feature that non-Tesla owners are likely to appreciate. In addition, the system also has an Auto-sensing lever for opening a Tesla charge plug.
At 11.5 kW/48 amp power, the Universal Wall Connector can add 44 miles of range per hour. It also has Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing it to receive over-the-air software upgrades.
With a big number of automakers recently announcing that they will be switching from the J1772 plug to Tesla’s NACS receptacle by 2025, Tesla stands to benefit not only from non-Tesla owners paying to charge at its Superchargers, but also from selling a lot more home-charging units.
The Universal Wall Connector costs $595, which is more than Tesla’s existing Wall Connector, which costs $475.
