Kenyan Government Considers Restricting TikTok Usage Among Senior Officials Due to Security Concerns

In a recent hearing before the Public Petitions Committee of the National Assembly, Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki revealed that the National Security Council is actively discussing the potential ban on senior government officers sharing certain information or using the popular Chinese app TikTok on government devices. Kindiki emphasised that social media poses a significant security risk for the country, and the government is considering forming an additional layer of defence forces to protect against cyber security threats.

During the committee session, Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama inquired about the existence of a policy regulating the use of TikTok by senior government officers, given the potential security risks. Kindiki acknowledged the complexity of the issue, stating that it requires changes in laws and policies. He also highlighted the undeniable potential of cyberspace to contribute to the country’s development.

The government has reached out to the owners of TikTok, expressing concerns about the app’s misuse by criminals for spreading malicious propaganda, stealing popular accounts, conducting fraud, and distributing inappropriate content. Kindiki stated that if the app’s owners fail to respond or comply with the government’s concerns, necessary actions will be taken. The committee is currently considering a petition by Bob Ndolo, which calls for the banning of TikTok in Kenya due to its alleged role in promoting moral decay and defrauding Kenyans.
