The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Motorola Solutions presented the International Network of Social Innovators for Human Development (INSIHD).

This network will link innovators globally with development programs involving the use of mobile technologies to bring innovative solutions to traditional challenges and to improve development outcomes.

Many apps are being developed but are yet to be fully adopted or connected to government and stakeholders.

The UNDP-Motorola Solutions event thus provided an opportunity for stakeholders to come together to address this and other issues.

Around 35 participants explored the rapid diffusion of mobile technologies that expanded communication channels in Rwanda, and opened new opportunities for social entrepreneurs to be part of development efforts.

They also showcased initiatives and state of the art innovations that could be used in various development efforts, highlighted lessons learned and good practices that could inform future initiatives, and underlined the importance of innovative partnerships.

Participants explored the possibilities of mobile technologies in executing goals such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and post 2015 development agenda.

The Minister of Youth and ICT,  Jean Philbert Nsengimana said: “Information and communication technologies must be an integral part of national development priorities and not seen in isolation. ICTs enable faster, more efficient and cost effective poverty reduction efforts. Rwanda is proud to share its experience of SMART Rwanda with other countries in Africa and the world.”

Travis Heneveld, Motorola Solutions’ Account Director said: “Motorola Solutions is proud to be part of a global initiative that links innovation in mobile technologies with concrete local development priorities.“

The event was the third in a series being planned by UNDP and Motorola Solutions, and linked the Rwandese social innovators with counterparts from similar events organized earlier this year in Kenya and Tunisia.
