Official: Tecno Phantom 8 launched with dual camera, 6 GB RAM and new design

Tecno has been teasing their upcoming device for a while now with the key focus being on the dual rear camera. This successor to the Phantom 6 and 6 Plus decided to skip the 7th title number to go to 8 as a way of denoting the dual cameras (8 looks like two circles, one on top of the other, you know, like two cameras). Let’s dive in and see what the dual cameras and the rest of the package brings this year.

The Tecno Phantom 8 headlining feature is the dual rear camera, and deservedly so, the sensor has a 12MP+ 13MP and tri-flash combination that is capable of a number of amazing things. First, you get 2X Optical Zoom (real zoom), then there is 10X Super Zoom ( digital zoom) and finally we have the trendy portrait mode which Tecno calls Refocus mode, it puts your main subject in sharp focus and the background is out of focus. In case you are curious, the 12MP sensor used here is the Sony IMX 386, the very same one used in the high end Moto Z2 Force launched earlier this year with stunning photographic abilities, so naturally, we have high hopes for the Phantom 8 photos as well.

The front camera, on the other hand, is a whopping 20MP, it even has an dual-LED flash for bright selfies even in low light. A facing softening feature, Smooth Mode, has been baked in to take over beauty mode in other devices found on OPPO devices such as the A71 that we are currently reviewing.

This 5.7 inch device will have a Full HD (1080*1920) resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, sorry for those who hopped for a bezelless Galaxy S8 kind of look. The internals we have this year include; a 2.6 GHz Octa Core Helio P25, it comes with a huge 6GB RAM and 64 GB expandable base storage. The Android OS version is Nougat but we hope Oreo will be updated soon. Keeping the lights on is a 3500mAh which will be charged via a USB-C cable, something that is very rare on tecno devices. Fast charging has been retained, it is promised to fill the device from 0-100% in 70 minutes.

The entire package has been enclosed with a new design that Tecno is calling Diamond Fire. It seems like a shiny material on the back that reflects light rays in a beautiful way. My guess, it is a glass back and front with a metallic frame holding the two panels together and a rear mounted fingerprint reader.

4G LTE is supported with Global roaming bands as well and speeds of up to 300mbps. The Phantom 8, just like other Tecno devices is dual SIM too.

The device will be available in three colors Galaxy Blue, Phantom Black and Champagne Gold and will retail for $400 ( KSh 40,000).
