Amidst speculations that Orange is pulling out of the African market, a new telecom operator has launched in Uganda today, promising the cheapest calling rates and the best network service ever.

The promise could be true or not true but being part of the Aga Khan Foundation for Development, the telco might easily deploy its nationwide infrastructure withing months. Smart Telecom says it will only charge $0.03 (UGX 74) for Smart to Smart call compared to around $0.04(UGX 100) to 0.08 (UGX 200) by some of its competitors.

According to the firm’s Group chief executive Abdellatif Bouzian, the firm will operate on the 074 code and is in the country for the long run and is not worried as others leave the market. More on this to come.
