MTN Uganda has launched MTN mFaith, a subscription SMS service that will enable customers to get inspirational messages like verses from the Bible or the Quran direct on their phones.
Available to all MTN customers, MTN mFaith can be activated simply by dialing 158 and choose between Christian or Islamic messages for UGX 100/ per day or UGX 500/- per week.
According to Ernst Fonternel, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN, “Religion is something Ugandans cherish and so we are providing spiritual nourishment to believers direct onto their phones through MTN mFaith.”
Though the move is aimed at increasing revenue sources from its over 9 million subscribers Fonternel said the services are aimed at adding value to its customers apart from just using their phones to access MTN’s fast Internet, making voice calls or using its Mobile Money network plus its various innovative value added services.
Launched in 1998, MTN Uganda recorded 9.5 million subscribers across Uganda as of 31 March 2014. The firm is part of South Africa’s MTN Group operating in 22 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
