Twitter can be safely said to be the best social network thing that happened to us on the internet after Facebook and below are some facts we thought you should know about the news and social network platform.

1. The first tweet ever sent on Twitter was by co-founder and CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey on the 21st day of March, 2006 (the year Twitter was launched) at exactly 10:02 pm. The tweet is a two-worded phrase “inviting coworkers”. See it below

Twitter became available to the public July 15, 2006.

  1. Twitter was originally planned to be named “stat.us” but was later changed to “Twttr” and finally, Twitter.
  2. The highest number of tweets sent in a second on Twitter was 143,199 tweets. This was recorded on August 3, 2013.

  3. On a normal day, about 6,000 Tweets are sent per second.

  4. 661 million tweets was once the highest recorded number of tweets per day. This record-breaking feat was attributed to the FIFA 2014 World Cup Final that took place that month.

  5. One of the lowest tweets per day recorded on Twitter was 303 million tweets (January 2016). Some tech experts and statistics sites tied this daily tweet decrease to the birth and climbing popularity of other social network sites like SnapChat and Instagram.

  6. Tweets per day has since bounced back upwards to the 500 million tweets per day region.

8. It once took 3 years for the total number of tweets on Twitter to clock 1 billion (March 2006 – May 2009)

  1. Now, it takes about 42 hours (less than 2 days) for tweets sent to reach the 1 billion mark.

  2. As at January 2017, Twitter had an employee base of more than 4,000 workers.

  3. Twitter was founded by 4 individuals: Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams.

  4. Facebook co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg once tried to buy Twitter for $500 million.

  5. The deal broke down because the founders weren’t willing to sell, and because Mark Zuckerberg was too serious, didn’t laugh at jokes and seemed difficult to please.

  6. 21% of people on Twitter are based in the United States of America.

  7. Twitter has about 100 million accounts that sends tweets on a daily.

  8. According to www.internetlivestats.com, the total amount of Tweets sent yesterday, September 7, 2017 was approximately 669,160,000.

  9. The USA has the highest number of Twitter users. Brazil comes in at second place, followed by Japan, and then Mexico.

  10. Lastly, 80% of users who visit Twitter use their mobile phones.
