Sportpesa gets nod to reopen with original M-PESA, url, branding & bank accounts

Sportpesa, the Kenyan sports betting site has been given a nod to relaunch in Kenya with original branding and URLs.

In its days of glory, the company gained international recognition by becoming the main sponsor of Everton FC which at the time had football legend Wayne Rooney as their striker wearing a Sportpesa shirt, match after match, it was also a betting partner of Arsenal at one point.

Sportpesa won a court ruling in which Lady Justice Pauline Nyamweya ordered Safaricom, Kenya biggest Telco, to reopen all MPESA Paybill numbers of the betting company.

“The ex parte Applicant is granted leave to apply for an order of Certiorari to move into this Court for purposes of being quashed, a decision of the Respondent contained in the letter dated 31st October 2020 Ref No. BCLB 11/152 VOL.I (14) indefinitely and unilaterally suspending the lawfully issued license to the Ex Parte Applicant,” Lady Justice Nyamweya ordered.

At the same time, the Communication Authority of Kenya was ordered to reopen the Sportpesa website, pieces were falling into place for an eventual comeback of the once very popular company.

Milestone Games Limited is the company powering the Sportpesa brand in Kenya just days after it had been barred by Betting Control and Licensing Board.

Sportpesa was also given access to its bank accounts. The court had previously blocked access after a KSh 14.3 billion tax claim by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

“SportPesa is back! I’m happy to announce that the SportPesa brand is back under a new BCLB licence holder, ” tweeted Sportpesa CEO Captain Karauri.
