It’s been 14 years since the last Tundra debuted. Toyota has revealed the new 2022 version with a new design and modern interior.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra will be available in SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 and TRD Pro trims. The Double Cab configuration can be had with either a 6.5- or 8-foot bed, while the larger CrewMax is offered with 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed options.
Under the hood, the 2022 Tundra does away with the V8 engine of its last generation in favor of a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with a hybrid option. The standard i-Force V6 puts out 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the electric i-Force Max takes things up a notch with 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. Both variants come equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Note that the hybrid option is only available on the Limited, Platinum and 1794 version. The engine offers more oomph while accelerating, it also allows a slow speed all electric cruising. Off-roading and towing will greatly benefit from all the torque that is made possible in a low 2400rpm.
The Tundra can tow 12,000 pounds (5440 kgs) in two modes, one is designed for light loads and the other mode, Tow Plus, amps up the throttle response for heavier items. This new pick up increases the payload by 11 % to 1940 pounds (879 kgs)
More improvements come in terms of the ride quality, by ditching the old leaf springs, the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s multi link coil springs will offer a smoother experience. To make this experience even better, the pick up can be had with adaptive rear air suspension, it can adjust damping forces based on the road conditions. It has high, normal and low modes which assist in loading and towing.
Toyota has fitted the Tundra with more cameras and technologies to assist in reversing and towing in general, they include Blind-spot monitoring which can cover the length of the trailer, and Toyota’s Trailer Back Guidance which helps drivers make those precise turns when reversing, lastly, Straight Path Assist can aid in keeping the trailer going backwards in a straight line.
Four wheel versions of the truck will have a rear locking differential, different terrain driving modes and Crawl Control, which is like a low-speed cruise control for off-roading.
Off – road enthusiasts will love the 18-inch TRD wheels, a set of 2.5-inch Fox internal bypass shocks with piggyback reservoirs live at each corner. In addition, the front of the truck gets a 1.1-inch lift over the other versions of the Tundra. The TRD variant also get an upgraded front stabilizer bar and TRD aluminum skid plating.
Inside the Tundra, there is an 8 inch touch infotainment system. Buyers have the option for a 14 inch system as well. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported plus Bluetooth compatibility for upto 5 devices and media profiles of upto 3 people.
Toyota includes its Safety Sense 2.5 on every Tundra. This packs features like pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist and lane-departure warning that now comes with a steering assist should you wander out of the lane. In addition, you get automatic high beams, rear-cross traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, road sign assist and a rear seat reminder.
The interior has also been modernized, gone are the knobs of the old Tundra, instead they went for switches under the infotainment screen. Panoramic roof, heated steering wheel and seats are also an option. The company kept around the loved power sliding middle rear window though.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra will be reaching dealers later this year. However, pricing and fuel economy details are yet to be released.
