Mercedes Benz EQS SUV is officially announced

Mercedes Benz launched an SUV version of their EQS sedan. Official called the EQS SUV, its a fitting name seeing how much of the EQS sedan was borrowed.

The new SUV features same 56-inch, pillar-to-pillar Hyperscreen (on the higher end model), same 107.8kWh battery, same design language. However, differences come in terms of dimensions, despite the the same sized wheelbase (126 inches), the ESQ SUV is 10 cm (3.9 in) shorter, 3 cm (1.2 in) thinner and over 7.8 inches higher than the sedan making it better for rugged roads. In fact, it comes with an OFFROAD driving mode, in which the AWD distribution is “optimized for unpaved roads, inclines and terrain.”

Two engine choices will be powering the SUV, the 450+ with rear-wheel drive and the dual-motor sporting 580 4MATIC. The 450+’s rear-axle motor will produce 355 horsepower and 419 pound-feet of torque. The 580 4MATIC comes with all wheel drive, it’s front and rear-axle motors puts out 536 horsepower and 633 pound-feet of torque.

Acceleration and top speed details were not released. Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz didn’t announce the drag coefficient of the SUV, which was a huge marketing point of its sedan sibling.

Fast charging the SUV from 10% to 80% will take just 31 minutes. A conventional 240V wall charger will take 11.25 hours from 10% – 100%.

As mentioned earlier, the more powerful EQS 580 with feature the Hyperscreen. Its made up of three displays; a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 17.7-inch central OLED touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch OLED touchscreen for passengers. The more affordable 450 has a 12.8-inch central OLED portrait touchscreen and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

The interior can have 3 rows of seats occupying 7 people. Dolby Atmos sound will be standard in both versions, it will be part of the standard Burmester 3D Sound System. Other features include ambient lightning with 63 colors plus a brand new EQ-specific hue. A host of safety features like blind-spot and lane-keep assist will be standard as well.

Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but expect the SUV to be pricier than the sedan variant which has a starting cost of $102,310 for the 450+. Both are expected to arrive at dealers in late 2022.
