The Toyota Corolla is the best-selling vehicle in the world. Last year, approximately 1,150,000 units were sold. An electric vehicle from a relatively new manufacturer, on the other hand, is on track to dethrone the iconic Corolla.

CEO Elon Musk claimed at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting that the Model Y electric crossover will be the world’s best-selling vehicle in terms of revenue this year. Furthermore, Musk stated that the Y will be the world’s best-selling vehicle in terms of overall volume in 2023.

In 2021, Tesla sold 936,222 vehicles overall. Despite ongoing supply chain issues, the company is rapidly increasing sales volume each year and is on track to sell over 1.3 million cars by 2022.

The Model Y’s ongoing sales success is all the more impressive when you consider how expensive it is. Never before has a $70,000 car sold approximately 150,000 units per quarter (Tesla only provides combined Model 3/Y sales figures, so exact Model Y sales are unknown). In comparison, the Toyota Corolla costs slightly more than $20,000.

Tesla has decided to exclusively focus Giga Berlin production on the Model Y, resulting in much faster European deliveries.
