Following its experimentation with AI playlist generation in the DJ feature last year, Spotify has introduced a beta tool allowing users to create curated tracklists based on text descriptions. AI playlist differs from Spotify’s AI DJ, which generates custom playlists based on the user’s entire listening history with limited options for curation.
Users on Android and iOS in these regions can access the AI Playlist generator by navigating to “Your Library” and tapping the “+” button at the top-right corner. After selecting the AI Playlist option from the drop-down menu, users can input a prompt, such as “music to read to on a cold, rainy day,” to receive a playlist of 30 songs matching that mood. The playlist can be further refined using additional prompts like “more sad music” until the user is satisfied, at which point they can save the playlist by tapping “create” at the top right.
Spotify states that users will receive better playlists by using prompts that combine genres, moods, artists, or decades. Additionally, references to places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, and even emojis are supported. Spotify plans to continue refining its generative playlist feature in the coming months.
The AI Playlist feature offers a quicker alternative to manually building playlists and serves as a music discovery tool for users seeking tunes that fit a specific aesthetic. However, there are limitations to note; AI Playlists will not generate results for non-music-related prompts like current events or specific brands, and offensive prompts are filtered out.
The new AI Playlist beta is initially being rolled out to Spotify Premium subscribers on mobile devices in the United Kingdom and Australia
