Uber Enters Subscription Market With its Uber One Membership Program in Kenya

Uber today launched Uber One in Kenya, a membership program that brings together Uber rides, delivery and groceries providing discounts and exclusive experiences for its users across both rides and delivery.

The membership service provides members with savings and an elevated experience in everyday moments. Whether it’s a ride to and from work, getting dinner on the table, or stocking the refrigerator, Uber One offers member-only upgrades, such as top-rated drivers on rides and premium support.

According to Imran Manji, Head of East Africa and Head of Business Development for Africa, “Uber has revolutionized Kenya’s mobility and delivery needs since our launch in 2015, hundreds of thousands of riders and eaters in the country collectively take advantage of the convenience, accessibility and sheer ease that our brands provide. We’re proud to keep building on this value with the deployment of Uber One.”

Internationally, rivals including Uber is not the first to do this as competitors Lyft, Bolt and DoorDash have all launched membership schemes in their journey to consistent profitability. Uber One aims to create a seamless experience for frequent users while providing cost-saving opportunities such as Ride Discounts, Uber Eats Perks and Priority Service.

Since its global launch, Uber One has seen a 78% increase in memberships, now surpassing 25 million subscribers. The program’s rapid growth reflects the increasing consumer demand for bundled services that enhance affordability and convenience.

Uber’s move into the subscription model follows in the footsteps of companies like Amazon (with Amazon Prime) and DoorDash (DashPass). By consolidating its services, the company aims to encourage customer loyalty and drive increased usage of both ride-hailing and delivery platforms.

The introduction of Uber One aligns with Uber’s long-term strategy to become a one-stop mobility and delivery platform. Subscription services not only provide consistent revenue streams but also enhance customer retention by incentivizing frequent use of Uber’s ecosystem.

With more consumers seeking bundled service benefits, Uber is poised to disrupt the mobility and delivery market, making Uber an even stronger competitor in the subscription economy.

How to Subscribe

Users can subscribe to Uber One by navigating to the Uber or Uber Eats app, selecting Uber One in the account section, and choosing a monthly or annual plan.

Uber expects this service offering to play a crucial role in shaping the future of ride-hailing and food delivery subscriptions, offering users greater affordability, convenience, and premium service.

For Kshs. 280 per month or an annual price of Kshs. 2800, Uber One includes 10% in Uber One credits on Premium rides (Uber Comfort and Uber XL) and 5% on Economy rides (Uber ChapChap) and Uber Boda, KES 0 delivery fee, up to 100% off service fee and Uber One exclusive offers.

To join Uber One, open the Uber or Uber Eats apps. Tap on the account, followed by the Uber One module. Review the benefits and Terms, tap Choose Plan and then select the monthly or annual offering.

“We want customers to experience firsthand how Uber can make their every day more effortless,” said Kui Mbugua Macharia, Uber Eats General Manager, Kenya. “Uber One offers elevated access to all of Uber: rides, delivery, and groceries. Members get preferred pricing, surprise discounts and delight perks that can make every day more fun.”
