Tesla Semi Truck production begins, deliveries to start this year with Pepsi

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter that production of the company’s semi-trailer truck, dubbed the Semi, has begun.

Musk also confirmed that Pepsi, which ordered 100 Class 8 trucks after their debut in 2017, will be among the first recipients. Semi-truck deliveries to the beverage company begin on December 1. Budweiser also ordered 40 of the trucks around the same time as Pepsi.

The Semi is manufactured at Tesla’s plant in Austin, Texas. The plant also produces Tesla’s Model Y crossover, and it will begin producing the Cybertruck electric pickup truck in 2023.

Tesla began accepting reservations for the Semi in May and asked for a $20,000 deposit in August, after which, reservations were closed. Originally, the trucks were priced at $150,000 for a 300-mile model and $180,000 for a 500-mile model.

Tesla claims that the Semi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds and can accelerate on gradients of up to 5% using three electric motors. Those figures are with the Semi’s maximum gross weight of 82,000 pounds onboard. Furthermore, with their dedicated chargers, the Semi can charge 70% of its battery in 30 minutes.
