This development has been confirmed by a reliable WhatsApp update source, WABetaInfo. The beta version, numbered 2.23.16.19, is now accessible to Android testers, introducing features reminiscent of popular platforms like Telegram, Discord, Slack’s Huddles, and even Meta’s Messenger.
Users with access to this feature will notice a distinctive waveform icon in group chats. This icon is visible only to accounts compatible with the feature. Initiating a voice chat is straightforward: by tapping the waveform icon, a dedicated voice chat interface opens. Once activated, up to 32 participants can effortlessly join the conversation and start speaking. Unlike traditional group calls, this feature avoids simultaneously ringing all participants’ phones.
Voice chat sessions continue after participants leave but automatically end after an hour.
WhatsApp maintains its commitment to privacy, ensuring end-to-end encryption for voice chats, and guaranteeing user security. Interestingly, this feature might extend beyond beta installations. WABetaInfo hints at a broader release shortly.
