WhatsApp Introduces Chat Lock Feature: Here's How to Secure Your Personal Chats

In place of entering a password, WhatsApp users may now safely log in to their accounts using their phone’s fingerprint or face recognition technology.

Over the past few months, WhatsApp has been adding new features to improve the user experience. The latest addition is support for passkeys, as announced by the company recently. Passkeys are said to be a more secure way to access online accounts than passwords. By doing away with the necessity to keep passwords on devices, they reduce their vulnerability to theft.

In addition to eliminating the need for passwords or one-time passcodes, passkeys offer multifactor authentication in a single step. For user authentication, biometrics such as fingerprint or facial scans are used.

This new login process is in line with WhatsApp’s growing emphasis on enhancing privacy and security for its billions of users. Because the authentication credentials are kept on the device rather than a server, passkeys improve account security.

The most recent version of WhatsApp for Android has enabled the capability. Passkeys are now available for users to safely log into their WhatsApp accounts, providing an additional degree of security.

Passkeys are not unique to WhatsApp. Leading the charge in promoting this technology, Google has made it available for use in logging into individual Google accounts.

WhatsApp’s use of passkeys is an indicator of the increasing embrace of this more secure and completely passwordless authentication method. WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps worldwide, has the potential to encourage passkey use on a larger scale.

This aligns with parent firm Meta’s goal of enabling passkey compatibility for Facebook and Instagram as well as other apps in its family. One step in that approach is WhatsApp’s addition of the feature.

Passkey benefits could hasten the extinction of weak password-based login and usher in a new era of highly secure passwordless authentication for online services as more users become aware of them. Support for passkeys by WhatsApp is a sign that this trend is going well.
