In a recent announcement, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Safaricom Limited, Peter Ndegwa confirmed that Anwar Soussa, the CEO of Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC (STEP), will be leaving the company on July 31st, 2023.
Mr Soussa’s departure marks the end of his secondment, which began when he joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021.
During his tenure as the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Mr Soussa played a pivotal role in establishing the organization, setting up business operations, and implementing a high-quality network.
“Under his leadership, Safaricom Ethiopia achieved significant milestones in a highly dynamic environment, including successfully launching commercial operations as the second telecommunications operator in Ethiopia,” Mr Ndegwa noted.
Mr Soussa’s efforts led to Safaricom Ethiopia acquiring over 4 million customers, expanding its network coverage to over 25% of the population, and reaching 50 cities and towns across the country.
Additionally, under his leadership, Safaricom Ethiopia obtained a mobile financial services license, setting the stage for the introduction of M-PESA services in the region.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr Ndegwa acknowledged Mr Soussa’s unwavering passion and commitment, which played a crucial role in Safaricom Ethiopia’s achievements thus far.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Anwar for his leadership and contributions to Safaricom Ethiopia. Throughout his tenure he has demonstrated unwavering passion and commitment, which have played a crucial role in our achievements thus far,” he noted.
The company will soon announce the appointment of Mr Soussa’s successor, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of Safaricom Ethiopia’s growth strategy.
