According to President William Ruto’s directive, the new university funding model was introduced by Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education, on Monday, July 31.The Higher Education Financing Portal, which Machogu unveiled, would make government money available to university and TVET students.
This innovative approach to student financial aid ensures that every Kenyan student is helped in accordance with their level of need while they are enrolled in universities and TVET institutions.
The CS added that the new funding mechanism will not have an impact on any continuing students who are enrolled in programs funded by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
The vulnerable, the less vulnerable, and the eligible for support will be the three categories into which the students will be divided under the new model, the president continued.

- Students can access the platform through hef.co.ke to enjoy the various services offered.
- Once you’re on the platform, you’ll see the dashboard’s multiple functions as well as the tabs for account login and student registration.
- After that, users can provide their address, educational background, biographical information like their ID number and secondary school index number, and other things.
- These specifics must be provided under the tab for student registration.
The platform is for new students who are enrolling in college or university in September 2023 to apply for loans.
