Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram are launching a subscription option for users in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland in response to evolving regulations.

Starting in November, users in these regions can choose between using the platforms for free with ads or paying for an ad-free experience.

The subscription cost is €9.99($10.61)/month for web users and €12.99 ($13.80)/month for iOS and Android users.

The fee covers all linked Facebook and Instagram accounts until March 1, 2024, after which additional accounts will incur extra charges.

“This move aligns with changes in European regulations, as hinted in August when the platforms planned to shift EU, EEA, and Swiss users to the GDPR’s “Consent” legal basis. The subscription model ensures compliance with these regulations, including the Digital Markets Act (DMA).”

For users who opt for the free version, their interaction with the platforms remains the same, with access to Ad Preferences and the “Why am I seeing this ad?” feature.

Advertisers can continue personalized ad campaigns for users who prefer the ad-supported model.

The subscription model applies to users aged 18 and above and reflects the company’s intent to reconsider ad experiences for teenagers in light of changing regulations.

This introduction has been incorporated into Meta’s business outlook.

For a comprehensive understanding of potential risks and uncertainties associated with the business and financial results, users are recommended to refer to the most recent Form 10-Q.
