Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki last Friday disclosed to the National Assembly’s committee on Public Petitions that the United States Government is exerting pressure on Kenya to lift the suspension of WorldCoin within the country.
The ban on WorldCoin, enforced in August 2023 due to concerns about data privacy, remains in effect. Although the US government refrained from commenting initially, it has become evident that they have been actively lobbying for the ban’s removal.
Despite being an American company, WorldCoin’s token (WLD) remains inaccessible to Americans, including citizens, residents, individuals within the US, and US-based or registered companies, reports state.
WorldCoin asserts that the token is only accessible in jurisdictions where regulations permit. It appears contradictory for the US government to advocate for lifting the suspension while their own laws prohibit the purchase and sale of WLD.
Mr Kindiki affirmed that the Kenyan government stands resolute in its decision and has no intention of rescinding the ban.
He stated, “The United States has been urging the government concerning WorldCoin, but we have maintained our stance firmly.” He continued, “They believe that WorldCoin still has grounds to operate here. However, our position remains steadfast, and the suspension will persist. We have no plans to reconsider.”
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) issued a cautionary advisory against WorldCoin in Kenya, urging vigilance and emphasizing the importance of having comprehensive information before disclosing sensitive data.
