Apple announces iPhone 12 series in the “Hi, Speed” event

Apple has this evening announced its 2020 flagship iPhone 12 series comprising of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max as well as a new Homepod mini.

The iPhone 12 series will start at $799 to $1,099priced a bit higher than the iPhone 11 series range. This year’s biggest addition is the iPhone series is the 5G support. The iPhones will be shipped with OLED displays.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 will begin this week on Friday, October 16th and the iPhone 12 mini will be available for pre-order on November 6th.

The new iPhone 12 Pro models will feature Apple’s A14 Bionic chip — first introduced on the refreshed iPad Air last month — revealed to be “most powerful chip ever made” by Apple.

The new chip is Apple’s first to use a 5nm process (instead of the 7nm process used on last year’s A13 Bionic). Apple says that both the new 6-core CPU and the four-core GPU are the fastest ever, with the performance that the company claims is up to 50 percent faster than any other phone.

iPhone 12 Pro Max, in particular, is notable for taking the crown as Apple’s biggest phone to date. The Pro models feature a stainless steel design coming in four colors: gray, stainless steel, gold, and a new blue.

While the iPhone 12’s feature a more durable ceramic shield that is tougher than any other smartphone display.

The iPhone 12 has two 12-megapixel wide-angle sensors, much better in low light photos.

Apple also spent some time touting its night mode, which now works on all cameras of the iPhone 12, including the front camera. As for video recording, the iPhone 12 gets night mode time-lapse which allows you to shoot excellent low-light videos, according to Apple.

Apple also introduced the new MagSafe wireless charging standard for iPhone which supports up to 15W wireless charging. MagSafe accessories can snap on to the back of iPhones for better alignment of the charger.

With a series of MagSafe accessories to improve the wireless charging experience, you will soon be able to charge both your iPhone and Apple Watch using the same charge.

Apple will be removing headphones and charging adapters from iPhone boxes to make them more eco-friendly.

iPhone 12 mini specifications

The iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4-inch display, the same Super Retina XDR display,

it operates on iOS 14 platform A14 Bionic SoC chipset, 5G support, the same design, and the same cameras as the iPhone 12.

Apple says the only major difference between the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 is the size. It is smaller and lighter than 4.7-inch iPhones such as the iPhone 7 while giving you a bigger and better display. 

iPhone 12 Pro specifications

The iPhone 12 Pro features a 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display

The iPhone 12 pro cameras this time Deep Fusion machine learning technology on all cameras. The triple rear camera setup on the iPhone 12 Pro features two wide-angle sensors and a telephoto sensor.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a better camera set with a telephoto camera that has a 65mm focal length that allows you 2.5x optical zoom and a zoom range of 5x. There’s an improved ultra-wide-angle camera as well. New image sensors allow for improvement in low-light photography and video stabilisation.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be getting support for RAW format images, via a format called Apple Pro RAW, which Apple says will be supported on popular image editing apps too. With the iPhone 12 Pro series, you get support for HDR video recording and even Dolby Vision HDR. 

The iPhone 12 Pro series ships with a LiDAR sensor. It allows you to have much faster AR experiences and improved depth perception. It allows iPhone 12 Pro to avoid focus on hunting when recording videos and shooting photos in low light. The iPhone 12 Pro series, goes without saying, has 5G support.

Apple will be removing its included USB wall bricks and wired EarPod headphones from the box on the new iPhones as part of the company’s ongoing environmental goals. Apple will, however, still include a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box for charging.

The iPhone 12 Pro will start at $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will start at $1,099, with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options.

Preorders for the iPhone 12 Pro will start on Friday, October 16th, and will ship a week later on October 23rd, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max will see preorders on November 6th and ship on November 13th.
