Apple’s Developer Website Hacked

apple

Apple’s developer website has been hacked. An email released by Apple informed the registered developers. It said that sensitive emails, names and physical addresses could have been conceded. This had forced them to take down the website on Thursday to stop further damage.

Last week in Thursday, a trespasser tried to protect personal information of Apple’s registered developers from their developer website.

“Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed; however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then,” said Apple.

The multinational corporation company, apple, further said that it will have to do a complete webite renovation in order to prevent a similar security threat from happening again.

The last website shut down was due to a rush on the company’s iOS 7 beta release in early June. This week’s outage, however, was longer-lived – for much of a day – and for a much more damaging reason.

In most Apple hacks that happened previously, have been client –side, often through vulnerabilities in the Java software the company used to ship with OS X, and occasionally via social-engineering attacks on iCloud passwords.

Apple’ worst fear might be that hackers could gain access to its app store or the signing credential technology that certifies iPhone apps as safe, known, and malware-free. Apple does not want its consumers to consider the iOS ecosystem anywhere near as malware-laden as Android sometimes appears to be.

The Contentious SIM Card Tax In Tanzania Is Suspended

0
tz-phone tax

It turns out that the Tanzanian government has suspended a new tax that was introduced in the beginning of this month. This tax had the country’s mobile users charged TSH 1000(USD 0.62) every month for every SIM card.

The contentious tax was meant to raise about USD 130 million annually to aid in rural infrastructure developments, instead the customers aggressively rejected the tax which forced the government to review their books and cut it off.

The minister of finance, Dr. William Mgimwa announced the change of strategy saying that the government will do a further consultation based on the complaints and may revisit the tax if it is to be resumed.

“We are not about to start charging the introduced tax because we are still working with the system as we don’t want to harm the community,” said Mgimwa.

The biggest criticisms about the new tax had come from the rural poor, who often spend less than what the tax would have charged in a month, effectively more than doubling their monthly phone costs.

The government does however face a problem with a very low tax base and high evasion, while a tax on mobile phone services would be much harder to avoid paying.

Tanzanian government has now singed a credit agreement which is worth USD 54.3 million (TSH 86.880 billion) with South Korea’s Exim Bank which will aid in the construction of data centres for the National Identity system.

The country’s Finance minister William Mgimwa and Exim Bank’s chairman and President Yong Hwan Kim, yesterday signed the agreement in Dar es Salaam.

The minister said that the loan will be used to build the unit’s head offices, establish data centers as well as procure facilities for the national identity project.

“Completion of the data centres for the project will enhance the government plan to execute its development strategies,” he said.

Mgimwa stressed that national identity cards were essential for the country’s development planning as they assist the government to gather important statistics related to population, income, immigration, safety and residence. He promised the Exim Bank that the loan given will be used to implement the project according to the agreement.

Now the total amount of money Tanzanian government owes Southern Korea at Sh582.400 billion, including the Sh86.880 billion soft loan signed, most of the money which has been injected are directed to development projects.

Yong Hwan Kim, in his speech, believed that the loan will assist in the completion of the projects and will give room for the Tanzanians who have attained the age of 18 to get an ID before the country’s election year, 2015.

He added that he was fascinated by the determination made by Tanzania to benefit from South Korean technology of e-government, smart card and finger printing.

Exim bank’s president also announced that the Export-Import of Korea has increased its loan agreement for the Economic Development Cooperation Fund from the current 20 per cent to 25 per cent soon.

Kim also noted that his government is ready to increase its support to Tanzania in areas of natural resources like the recently discovered gas among others which will help to enhance the Public and Private Partnership “PPP”.

BTP Proactive Communications, a company formed with the merger of UK based BTP Advisers and Kenya’s Proactive Media, hosted the Kuwa Shujaa Anti-Vandalism Campaign in Nairobi. The event was aimed at creating awareness on vandalism on infrastructure.

The campaign was to seek to elicit a response to the problem of vandalism that has affected major development across various economic sectors, such as energy, telecommunication, construction and roads in Kenya.

In the campaign event, Fridah Musyimi, of Proactive Communications said that it was important for the media plays a crucial role in advocacy in Kenya and therefore bringing them aboard is expected to playing a positive role in fighting vandalism.

Eng. Okeyo, the manager, maintenance from Kenya National Highway Association (KeNHA) said that they has spent about 32 Billion on the Thika Super Highway so far on replacing vandalized road furniture and the destruction is still recurring.

“There has been a lot of damage to these facilities, the rails and other metallic things have been broken and taken to scrap metal dealers, these actions are done mainly at night when there is minimal supervision,” he said.

Some of the strategies suggested to help combat vandalism included use of informers, this will help gather information that could be used in the court of law; giving stiff penalties to offenders like 3 year imprisonment, establishing Anti-Vandalism Police unit so as to safe guard the affected areas, community involvement & public awareness and the tougher regulation of the scrap metal sector among others.

The KuwaShujaa, Kaa Rada’ (Be a Hero, Be Vigilant) campaign brings together stakeholders from among those sectors worst affected by vandalism to co-ordinate their efforts to combat it.

The second and third phase of the campaign involves Sectorial Meetings & Multi Stakeholder Conference and Lobbying Campaign respectively.

Zimbabweans Launch Independent TV Station Ahead Of Elections

zim-TV

The people of Zimbabwe are set to introduce a new, privately owned TV station. They hope that the station will provide an independent voice ahead of the forth coming elections.

The company spokesman of the new station, Temba Hove, said that the station would broadcast, unprejudiced and truthfully news to the Zimbabwean people and will also bring programmes like comedies and soap operas which are quite popular to the residents.

Most of the media in the country is controlled by the state which is automatically in favor of the president Robert Mugabe. Hove said that the channel would serve as a platform for all people to express their views.

“Thirty-three years after independence it is high time that the people get what they demand and deserve in respect to their right to information,” said Hove.

Temba Hove, a former producer –presenter at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), will be running the new station alongside Andrew Chadwick who has a history of working for Mugabe’s rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

The country currently has one television station, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Station (ZBC), which is state-owed. ZBC also runs four radio stations.

In the mid-1990s two stations were launched but had to be shut down due to funding problems. Following the loss of signal from South Africa’s SABC, Zimbabweans have relied on the Wiztech free-to-air platform to access alternative television stations.

Many times political rivals in Zimbabwe have been protesting for such a long time that the local media only covered most of Mugabe’s campaigns and defame his opponents

Opening up the airwaves was among the reforms agreed to in the pact which gave birth to the power-sharing government between Mugabe and Tsvangirai.

Nigeria’s USPF Aims To Set Up 5,000 New Base Stations In Rural Areas

0

Nigeria’s Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) will build 5,000 base stations in five years.

Maikano Abdullahi, the secretary USPF, a special fund set up to provide telecommunications and ICT services to undeserved communities said last week Thursday at the unveiling of the funds five year strategic plan, 2013-2017 Strategic Management Plan (SMP).

Abdullahi said they will  focus on implementation of connectivity, which is inclusion of connectivity and access to ensure sustainability of the rural access.

USPF secretary said it will facilitate the building of new telecoms base transceiver stations (BTS) in the rural communities of the country. This is in line with  the new Strategic Management Plan (SMP) 2013-2017, where 1,000 BTS are to be built every year, over a period of five years.

Other key targets include the plan to support the deployment of 15, 000 kilometres of fibre optic cables, laying an average of 3,000km every year; and the deployment of Internet Point of Presence (PoPs) in 25 clusters over five years, with an average of five per year under the Fund’s Rural Broadband Internet (RUBI) scheme.

Also, the secretary disclosed that to achieve the new targets, USPF would, in the next two weeks, come up with Requests for Proposals from telecoms operators that would drive the infrastructure deployment, stressing  that the Fund would ensure there is transparency in the bidding process. This could be achieved through new operating model adopted for the current SPM, which focuses on an integrated approach to project strategy and execution  leading:

1.      to increase participation of industry operators;

2.      ensure implementation of well-planned and adaptable projects which suit a variety of ICT schemes;

3.      ensure availability of telecoms infrastructures in unserved and underserved area for universal access.

Speaking earlier, Joseph Tegbe, Partner, KPMG, the consultancy firm working with USPF on the rural access programme  said the SNMP 2007-2001 programmes and projects were well articulated but the USPF encountered some impediments in executing some of them.

Tegbe said: “There were too many projects. Also, projects were designed and defined using a ‘one size fits all’ approach, thus USP intervention, in some cases, did not directly address the specific needs of the beneficiaries, among others challenges.”

Speaking on the occasion, the Director of Telecoms and Postal Services in the Ministry of Communication Technology, John Ayodele, called for serious collaboration between the USPF, the telecoms operators and other necessary stakeholders to ensure the current SMP records appreciable success.

The fund announced, “We are accepting the second batch scheduled to start in mid July 2013  and we are taking applications now. We welcome startup applications from all over the world who are addressing the Sub-Saharan Africa market.”

Run by Erik Hersman, Mbana Alliy and Paul Bragiel, Savannah Fund’s Accelerator Program invested into bINU, SafariDesk , Mprep.it (now enezaeducation), Kola Studios and Ahonya.com as their first batch of start-ups. We shall bring you the funding details and criteria in an exclusive interview with the fund partners soon.

For the second batch, the fund says it will deploy $25,000 into five companies for a stake of about 15% equity in each with three months acceleration.

Applicants ought to apply online to be selected for an interview. Savannah Fund is interested in teams with an initial prototype, early customers and revenue.

Core teams of the selected start-ups will be based at the iHub Nairobi during the duration of the program.

Initially focused on East Africa, Savannah Fund says it aims to bridge the early stage or angel and venture capital investment gap that currently exists in Africa by combining capital with mentor networks both in the region and from  Silicon Valley via an accelerator program and a follow-on independent seed fund.

According to a report by African Venture Capital Association (AVCA), the total amount of private equity funds raised in Africa declined by 42.7% in 2005 to US$557 million, compared to US$971.8 million in 2004,with the highest proportion of funds raised by South Africa. Almost two-thirds of funds raised were for later stage investment.

Rod Evison, Portfolio Director at CDC responsible for Africa also added:“The private equity industry in Africa is still at an early stage of development. It has largely been backed by foreign investors and, even in South Africa, this continues to be the case.”

And agreeing with the report’s findings, Barbara James, Managing Director of AVCA, said: “Whilst early stage investment has dominated the volume of investment activity in Africa in 2005, the amount of funds raised to focus on early stage has declined significantly. This highlights a growing funding gap which we believe needs to be addressed to help sustain economic improvement in Africa.

Savannah Fund, managed by experienced and technology savvy partners and with an understanding of the Subsaharan African environment believe that by investing in sustainable for profit companies that create jobs, they will be making an impact. Apart from just money, the fund addresses founders skills and experience gap and helps them build a company and launch a product. The entrepreneurs will also learn from high value and reputable experienced local and international mentors who have been successful at building technology companies.

Apply to be interviewed and selected to  the fund’s second cohort here.

CEO Weekends: PayPal Error Awards An Account With 92 Quadrillion US Dollars

1

paypal_logoOnline payments and money transfers firm, PayPal, made one of its account holder’s richer with an astounding USD 92quadrillion last week by mistake.

The account owner Chris Reynold a resident of Delaware County said that he initially thought it was a debt, until he realized they had credited his account.

The email he was sent by the company stated that his balance stood at $92,233,720,368,547,800, although when he went to check the figure on the website, it showed a more usual balance of zero.

That amount of money is roughly equivalent to 14 months worth of the entire planet’s Gross Domestic Productivity.

Reynolds has been a PayPal customer for about 10 years, using it mainly for eBay transactions.

A side note, this reveals that in some way, the PayPal account balance tables in their database has the ability to carry values greater than the planet’s annual GDP — which maybe an indication of how large the firm thinks its financial services will grow to in the future.

CEO Weekends: Nigeria’s Finance Minister Urges Citizens To support Locally Assembled PCs

omatek-computers

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the coordinating minister of Nigeria’s and Finance Minister urged Nigerians to support home-grown unique equipment manufacturers.

The minister added that it is only through that way that technology could be transferred; new job opportunities will be created as well as assurance of a good life for the citizens.

This she said during a tour of the factory of Omatek Computers which is situated in Lagos. Okonjo-Iweala believed that instead of looking up to the Federal Government for sponsorship, Nigerians should support locally made electronics search as PCs, tablets and other ICT accessories.

“We will only succeed in this country if we patronise our own products. Let us look unto ourselves and leave government. If we patronise our own goods, we will grow the economy,” she said, adding that with a population of over 150 million people, the multiplier effect on the economy of patronising indigenous OEMs could only be imagined.

She also enjoined the Group Managing Director of Omatek Computers, Engineer Florence Seriki, to make her products competitive in terms of quality, insisting that it was only by doing so that her products could beat the competition posed by imported goods. She also urged her to look to the private sector for patronage instead of looking up to the government.

A while ago,the engineer conducted the minister around the expansive factory, where the government delegation was amazed by the huge investment Omatek had committed to the factory.

CEO Weekends: No license for Electronic Arts to make NCAA games

0

ncaa

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) declared that the licensing renewal agreement between EA Sports will not push through.  Electronic Arts (EA) Sports license will expire in June 2014; this means that the upcoming NCAA 2014 will be the last college football game released under the license.

The NCAA games were strong and expected and were a source of revenue for the EA Sports; however the games did not make so much money and was not as popular worldwide as FIFA.

Apart from making college football the company had also made a footprint in college basketball as well as baseball in the past. EA Sports had signed a deal in 2005 which had given them an exclusive license to NCAA teams, logos and a major competitive advantage over their major rival 2K. These are some of the things that the company would loose out on.

This piece of information doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be the end of the EA Sports making it to the NCAA games; it only means that they will have to negotiate with ever team and school at an individual level which is quite costly.

Disagreements are not something new to these college games and the license problem could be a result of a disagreement. Electronic Arts was hit with a class-action lawsuit accusing that the company’s licensing deals effectively gave it a monopoly over sports games, which it settled last year for USD27 million. Part of the contract in that resolution was that it would not enter into any other such agreements for five years.

It’s also gotten in trouble for including actual student athletes in its games, a no-no because college athletes are not supposed to be professionals and aren’t paid for their likenesses. Another class action lawsuit is ongoing about that.

Uganda’s Revisenow.net Making Education Simpler For Students

0

revise nowLate last year, a friend wanted to develop a web application that would provide past UNEB papers and a full Ugandan curriculum online. I don’t know what happened to his dream but I recently stumbled upon a website revisenow.net offering almost a similar service to the one he wanted to develop.

“ReviseNow is a FREE website providing past papers (examinations) content to primary, secondary, advanced or high school and university students.”  On this website you will find past papers dating as way back as 1991.

If you have never been there, I’ll give you a brief review before you head over there.revisenowlog

revisenow_categories

Scope

They have papers in four categories .i.e. Primary, O-Level, A-Level and Institutions/university.

Under primary they have papers from about 1991-2009 in some of the subjects, Math, SST, English and Science. O-level has the usual subjects of Physics, Biology, Math History…. The A-level category contains only the General paper past papers from 1988 to 2008 while there are no papers at all under the institutions category (“coming soon”).

My Experience

I was on the page for about ten minutes and since I wasn’t trying to revise for anything it is quite understandable if I tell you that I quickly got bored while there.
On the whole, you will get what you are looking for quite easily, most people will easily find the arrangement and navigation of the categories/subjects/past-papers quite easy to grasp.

I found two issues worth of mention.

  1. The adverts spread across the page are a big distraction for anyone trying to revise. (But they bring in the money!).
  2. The inability to copy even a single question! Right clicking has been disabled on the page to stop you from copying their questions. Once you right click you get an alert message “This is ONLINE CONTENT MATERIAL – it is not subjected to copy”.  Seriously If all online content wasn’t subject to copying the world would have ended by now.

Opportunity to improve

I don’t know if their goal is just to provide past papers or to be a revision channel.  Back when I was in school, I revised best through a question and answer approach. Do ten questions and then mark myself based on the results. Without answers, it’s mostly teachers who benefit from an arrangement of questions only. Of course there are those chaps who have read ‘book’ and just want to test their knowledge; these will find this site a great resource.

Great potential

On the whole I am quite excited at the potential this site possesses. If they can turn this website into an application with dynamic content and user interaction it has the potential to grow a lot faster and bigger.

Yesterday he interviewed by Komla Dumor at BBC Broadcasting House for the BBC’s daily Focus on Africa programme.

In the interview, Njoku and Dumor discussed Nollywood and the success of iROKOtv as the world’s largest online distributor of Nigerian movies, as well as how iROKOtv has been able to bring Nollywood to a global audience, by streaming thousands of movies online. In the live interview, the two men also discussed the African tech scene and how it is being revolutionised by a new and exciting wave of young entrepreneurs.

“For me, to go on to BBC Focus on Africa and talk about iROKO and how the Nigerian tech scene is making being waves, is a real pleasure. Nation Media Group’s prepaid card National hela, has introduced a  a door-to-door marketing strategy that will see small and medium-sized enterprises use the card, in a move expected to revive the now somewhat passive service.

Introduced by the Nation Media Group in partnership with Diamond Trust Bank, (DTB) Nation Hela allows users to sent cash from overseas to their loved ones back in Kenya. Nation Hela is targeting 300 companies in this fresh swoop so as they use it for payrolls and general purposes..

Herbert Rajula, Nation Hela’s commercial manager said that the company intends to have the card used to facilitate payrolls and for general purposes.

“We have, therefore, targeted Jungle Nuts in Thika to kick start our project. Registration is ongoing for the 1,800 staff”, said the commercial manager.

DTB Pre-Paid Card programme manager Gilbert Shigoli believed that low income earners receive money from relatives abroad and for this reason there is the need to tap into the market by registering SMEs’ staff.

“We made the choice to start from Jungle Nuts because it is an SME that showed willingness to embrace technology and change its trends,” said Shigoli.

The programme manager said DTB will ensure that the registered card holders use it from Tuesday.

“Customers are allowed to deposit up to $10,000 in their accounts to kick start its use,” Mr Shigoli said.

The other companies, Rajula said , which have been approached to take up Nation Hela, are Van De Berg flower farm in Naivasha, KAPA oil, PwC and Mumias Sugar.

“We are knocking on doors of companies, selling the idea to them. Many have embraced it already,” Mr Rajula added.

He said the move is geared towards bridging the gap between the banked and unbanked.

“We want to erase the notion that cards are only for the wealthy. That is why we are reaching out to small and medium scale enterprises.”

The Zambian parliament is now set on going digital and it now pushing Parliament to go paperless by allowing lawmakers to use their mobile phones, laptops and iPads instead of paper to conduct business in the House.

“Allow us to use our cell phones, laptops and iPads, as we are in a technological and information age. We are tired of hiding the equipment when we are in the House,” Said Ronnie Shakipwasha the Member of Parliament of Keembe.

The Member of Parliament, who was contributing to a debate on the Parliamentary Reforms and Modernization, said that it was not compulsory to limit the use of electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops and iPads in the House.

The electronic gadgets, he said are important, giving the example of Rwanda, where Parliament has already gone paperless. He argued the Zambian government to follow Rwanda’s example in using the devices.

Shikapwasha was supported by several Members of Parliament, including the Minister of Finance, Alexander Chikwanda, who equally called for reforms of the Zambian Parliament.
