X, formerly known as Twitter, is set to introduce audio and video calling features for non-paying users, according to recent reports.

Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, revealed several weeks ago that the rollout would commence once the company was confident in its stability.

Initially, the company introduced the audio and video calling feature for paying subscribers on iOS devices. Android users also gained access to this feature earlier this year.

While users previously had to subscribe to X Premium to make calls via the app’s Direct Messages (DMs), the upcoming update will grant non-paying users the ability to make calls without a subscription.

Enrique Barragan, an engineer at X, officially announced the arrival of the new feature via a post on Friday.

“We’re gradually rolling out audio and video calling to non-premium users. Try it out! Now you can also choose to allow calls from everyone,” Mr Barragan wrote.

The feature can be found in the messaging settings of the app, with audio and video calling already enabled as of Saturday morning.

Users will have the option to customize their call preferences, including receiving calls from contacts in their address book, those they follow, verified users, or everyone.

To minimize unwanted calls, the app restricts calls to accounts with whom users have previously messaged at least once.
