How to Free Up Storage on Your Phone Quickly

0

If your phone constantly gives you storage-full warnings, don’t panic. You can reclaim space and stop the pesky notifications with some simple housekeeping. Follow these tips for spring cleaning your phone’s storage.

1. Remove Unneeded Apps

The most obvious spacehogs are apps you no longer use. Scroll through your full app list and note any you haven’t opened in months. Uninstall apps you won’t miss to gain back the storage they occupy. Don’t forget to check for unused widgets too. Deleting just 2-3 little-used apps and widgets quickly frees up 100+ megabytes. Carefully consider if pre-installed apps like Stocks or Tips are worth the permanent space. Such apps can be disabled if you want to keep their data. Temporarily offloading larger games you play infrequently reclaims storage until you’re ready to play again.

2. Manage Photos and Videos

Camera photos and videos accumulate incredibly fast, especially if you have young kids. The Photos app includes useful management tools, however. First, delete blurry pictures and duplicate near-identical shots. Next, offload older images you still want to keep to cloud storage, like iCloud or Google Photos. Check your camera roll size over time in the Photos settings. Set an upper limit of 10GB for your phone. When you reach that threshold, offload another batch of older pictures to the cloud again. This cycle means you always have your latest pictures readily available on your device.

3. Remove Cached Data

Behind the scenes, many apps create temporary cached data and files. Over time, this adds up to gigabytes of invisible storage clutter. Fortunately, clearing app caches is fast and easy, without losing important data. In iPhone Settings under General > Storage > Reviews Storage, you can review and clear app cache data. Android devices have similar App/Storage Manager options to wipe cached data. Doing so weekly or monthly ensures caches never balloon out of control again.

4. Delete Downloads and Files

Check your downloads folder and delete files you no longer require. It’s also worth scanning other file manager folders like Documents or Desktop to remove PDFs, screenshots, and other items you can obtain again if truly needed someday. You likely accumulate audio files like podcast episodes too. If you finish a show or season, remove the episodes to reclaim capacity. Streamed audio and video also store temporary offline cache files when connectivity drops. Clear that offline content if storage fills up.

Staying vigilant by conducting regular storage checkups enables you to use your phone worry-free. Set reminders to follow this guide monthly or quarterly before that pesky “Storage Full” alert returns!

0

Cairo-based direct-to-consumer (D2C) beauty and wellness startup, Mira, has raised $200,000 from Wingoo Investment and Technology.

This move comes after Mira successfully produced its first locally produced beauty product by the end of 2023. It aims to produce a range of cosmetic and skincare products throughout 2024.

Ahmed Al-Shehabi, the CEO of “Wingoo” for Investments and Technology, expressed his confidence in the quality of Egyptian products with their potential to compete against other global products. This belief has driven his investment in “Mira” Cosmetics and Skincare. He noted that “Mira” Cosmetics and Skincare is aiming to expand its presence and enter new markets within the next three years, beyond Egypt, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, in line with their strategic plans of expansion and growth.

The young entrepreneur Amira Dawood, CEO and founder of Mira Cosmetics and Skincare, observed the increasing demand among girls for imported cosmetics and skincare products at high prices with foreign currency. She came up with the idea of establishing and manufacturing high.

Egyptian products at affordable prices, with the aim to promote local products. This would not only save customers time and effort, but address the challenges posed by the current US dollar shortage with the related severe measures that pressure its exchange on e-commerce platforms.

Amira highlighted that her company successfully secured an investment of $200,000. However, the focus of her company is not to attract investments at the moment; she rather aims to build a strong Egyptian brand and foster a loyal customer base by the end of this year. Only after achieving these goals does she plan to consider attracting investments to support the expansion and growth of her business. Amira anticipates a high demand for her products, especially among girls, reaching a customer base of 100,000 clients by the end of 2024.

Amira expressed that the competition is intense, as it goes head-to-head with international products. Exceptional quality and affordable pricing, however, characterize her products that are proudly made in Egypt and available in the local market at all times. Additionally, her company prioritizes delivering excellent customer service.

She also highlighted that the company’s current focus is on producing fresh merchandise tailored to the domestic market. Moreover, the company’s dedicated team is committed to comprehending the demands of their target audience, and delivering products that meet their needs with top-notch materials and competitive pricing. Such products will be accessible through their website, and they are also making arrangements to establish retail outlets, ensuring that customers have the option to purchase or try their products before making a final decision.

Concerning the significant obstacles that might face the company in the domestic market, she emphasized that there are presently no challenges encountered. The company is rather dedicated to producing top-notch goods and fostering a strong bond of trust with its customers.

Using the funds, Mira hopes to grow its customer base to 100,000 clients by the end of 2024, with plans to enter the UAE and Saudi markets.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs S23 Ultra: What’s the difference and should you upgrade?

0

Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy S24 Ultra, their new flagship. It looks very much like last year’s S23 Ultra and you might be wondering if there are any changes. There are several of them actually.

The first physical difference you will notice is the screen, it’s now completely flat unlike the slight curve on last year’s S23 Ultra. Some prefer the premium look of curved glass considering you are paying top dollar for the device but others prefer the durability of a flat screen especially during falls.

The New Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Speaking of durability, Samsung’s new high-end phone has a titanium frame, which should be tougher than the aluminum frame on the S23 Ultra. The S24 Ultra’s screen is also made of Corning’s newest and toughest material, Gorilla Glass Armor, while the S23 has Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

That screen is also brighter with a maximum of 2,600 nits (the S23 Ultra maxed out at 1,750 nits) and thus easier to see in bright daylight.

Under the hood, the S24 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which is faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the S23 Ultra. RAM in the S24 Ultra starts at 12GB unlike the 8GB base of last year’s device. For even better performance, the S24 Ultra also has an improved cooling system with a vapor chamber that’s twice as large and two added layers of thermal insulation, so we’d expect it to maintain better framerates and temperatures when running performance-intensive operations, like gaming.

Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Camera hardware is mostly the same apart from the new 50-megapixel 5x optical telephoto camera in place of the 10-megapixel 10x optical camera in the S23 Ultra. The higher megapixel count should mean photos taken with it are sharper than those shot with the S23’s 10x optical camera. You can get 10x zoom on the S24 Ultra as well, the camera shoots with its 5x optical camera and crop zooms in.

Galaxy AI is the biggest difference between the new phone and last year’s devices. The most noteworthy is Circle to Search, which lets you trace an area on your screen with your stylus or finger to have your phone look up what you’ve circled without ever having to leave the app you’re in. There are also other generative AI capabilities, like summarizing notes and live translations during phone calls.

Last year’s S23 line up is sure going to get the AI features at some point via a software update. Still on the topic of updates, the S24 Ultra comes with Android 14 and will get seven years of Android software and security patches, up from four years in the S23 Ultra (which comes with Android 13) which is big deal for future proofing the device.

Should you upgrade?

If you are coming from a device that isn’t the S23 Ultra, the answer is a resounding yes! But wait, the S23 Ultra itself just got a little more enticing since its price is going to drop now that the S24 Ultra has been released and it’s more expensive at launch. The S24 ultra starting price is $1,300, while the S23 Ultra had a $1,200 price tag at launch. Considering how close they are in terms of specs and design, that pricing might be the main deciding factor.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra color options

For those who already have the S23 Ultra, there are a few things to consider. The main reason to upgrade to the new one is to access generative AI today — or if you wanted a phone that could conceivably last you seven years.

The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the first smartphone chipset to include generative AI on its silicon. It’s the magic that processing some of the generative AI features on the device which is much quicker than doing the heavy lifting on the cloud. S23 Ultra might be forced to do the processing on the cloud once Galaxy AI update is rolled out. Will that information in mind, you have all you need to decide on the upgrade.

SweepSouth appoints new CEO as it looks at new verticals, business models & maybe new geographies

0

SweepSouth, a South African founded on-demand home cleaning and services platform has appointed a new CEO as Aisha Pandor, the startup’s founding CEO steps aside to her new adventures in the health tech/biotech space.

“It’s with much excitement and pride that I’m sharing the news of the appointment of Lourandi Kriel as SweepSouth’s new CEO,” said Pandor. “Lourandi’s appointment comes after an 18-month transition and will see our current SweepSouth MD, Luke Kannemeyer, move to the COO role.

Pandor, will not be stepping away from SweepSouth completely but will be involved in a different capacity, offering her brilliance and wisdom in continuing to grow the brand and vision. She will remain as an executive director, supporting the company on strategy, and dedicated to helping guide us in staying true to our original vision and mission.

“I’m grateful to Luke for the leadership role he has played, and look forward to supporting him and Lourandi as they achieve even greater heights as a team,” Pandor added. “Building SweepSouth to serve millions of bookings and become the leading home services platform on the African continent has been one of the biggest honours of my life.”

There have been allegations from SweepSouth’s domestic workers saying they’re forced to work extra hours for free but Pandor denies such allegations arguing that in an industry mired with historical challenges, “we’ve increased pay rates, agency, opportunity, tech and financial literacy, and awareness of working better towards the way things should be, for one of the most marginalised groups of workers on the African continent.

According to Pandor, the firm has directly positively impacted the lives of almost 50,000 women (and men), and many thousands more through their families and communities.

“I’m also proud to have been, and to continue to aspire to be, an inspiration and source of support for other women on the African continent and beyond who are building in tech,” she said.

Lourandi has strong experience leading fintech, retail and SaaS companies through growth, turnarounds, and on both sides of M&A transactions. She has served as CFO and CEO on the ground in regions including West Africa, MENA, Europe, the US, and Southeast Asia. Moreover, during interviews with her, apart from her strong intellectual, leadership and technical abilities, what also shone through is her people-centred approach, confidence, humility, integrity, humour, ambition and drive.

With her appointment, the new CEO is expected to drive the firm’s growth. SweepSouth is on a sustainable growth path and sits on a strong footing, with exciting opportunities on the horizon in terms of new verticals, business models, and geographies.

In November 2022, SweepSouth stopped its operations in Kenya and Nigeria months after expanding to both markets. The platform said it will shut down the two-units due to tough economic environments. However, its Egyptian operation, where it acquired FilKhedma, an online marketplace for home maintenance and improvement services like carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and air conditioning, among others, was not affected.

Earlier, the South African on-demand home cleaning and services platform raised $11-million in funding led by Alitheia IDF, a private equity fund aimed at expanding into new markets and grow its existing operation.

ICT Authority Embarks on Training of Trainers for the Citizen Digital Skills Program

0

The ICT Authority on Monday 15 January commenced a five-day training of trainers (TOT) for the Citizen Digital Skills Program to equip the trainers with the necessary skills and knowledge required to drive the country’s digital skills program which seeks to train five million citizens in one year and 20 million citizens by 2032.

All citizens are eligible for the program which has four curricula namely; Foundational Digital Skills, Basic Digital Skills, Intermediate Digital Skills and Advanced Digital Skills. The registration for the courses is ongoing through: https://www.smartacademy.go.ke/.

The Government of Kenya, through the ICT Authority, has taken significant strides in ensuring that citizens are trained on digital skills to align with the efforts on universal broadband connectivity, establishing free Wi-Fi hotspots, and building digital hubs nationwide.

The ongoing efforts, including the acceleration of digital hubs in all wards, are geared towards bridging the digital divide and making all government services accessible online.

Speaking during the event, Stanley Kamanguya, CEO, ICT Authority said, “Our commitment to enhance government service delivery through digitization and automation and make government services accessible online is on course. The ICT Authority in collaboration with both Public and Private sector are working to accelerate the automation process and to build resilience on the digital infrastructure to safeguard our growth.”

In August last year, the stakeholders met in a workshop meeting held in Nairobi where they formulated the Digital Skills curricula. During the same year, the ICT Authority invited eligible organizations to express their interest to be part of the training consortium for the program.

On her part, Zilpher Owiti, Director, Partnerships, Innovation and Capacity Development, ICT Authority, noted that, “Many of our citizens are missing out on many opportunities within the digital economy which is creating employment for millions of people across the world. We would like our citizens to take part in this program and get the opportunities as they arise.”

The Training of Trainers program underscores the commitment to staying ahead in the digital age and equipping a workforce capable of navigating its complexities. Participants will engage with experts, participate in hands-on sessions, and collaborate with peers to enhance training capabilities, fostering a culture of continuous learning.

The stakeholders called upon citizens to take advantage of the ICT digital skills training opportunities being rolled out by the ICT Authority in collaboration with other partners to unlock opportunities within the digital space and further boost the digital economy.

The training is being undertaken in partnership with UK Government’s Digital Access Programme.

This training is expressed in the Kenya National Digital Master Plan(2022-32) under the digital skills Pillar which proposes the building of the digital literacy capacity building of all citizens starting with 20 million of them who urgently require digital skills in their businesses and work.

Samsung Galaxy S24’s AI Features: Free Until 2025, Then Subscription-Based Shift

0

At the height of the excellent presentation of the Galaxy S24, one piece of information was slightly overlooked. The “Galaxy AI” features that Samsung boasts about will only be available for free until 2025.

Rarely, high-end phones worth over KSH 100,000 or above their value lose functionality after a few years of existence. However, this is the case with the Galaxy S24, which Samsung has just introduced. Although the Korean manufacturer has focused much of its news on the artificial intelligence functions accompanying its phones, they can only be accessible for a while.

As we can read very briefly on the official page of the website, “Galaxy AI features will be provided free of charge on compatible Samsung Galaxy devices, at least until the end of 2025. “This means that after this date, when Samsung decides, it will have to pay a subscription to take advantage of features such as on-the-fly translation, rephrasing suggestions, or summarizing the article.

Paying for access to advanced artificial intelligence features is reasonable; ChatGPT and Google Bard use (or will use) this strategy, but when these features are presented as the basis of S24 software, it is more challenging to cope mainly if most of these operations can be performed locally without resorting to the cloud (which often entails high costs).

This means many “new features” built into the S24 can be loaded in 2 years. In this game, Samsung triumphs less than Google and its Pixel 8, although they are also reinforced by artificial intelligence. It should also be noted that this policy does not affect the artificial intelligence functions provided by Google, for example, the “Environment Search” function. As Samsung clarifies, “The availability of artificial intelligence functions supplied by third parties may be changed. “This way, S24s will be able to get specific free AI features at the end, while others will pay for it. It takes work to keep track.

The vocabulary used by Samsung still leaves little hope since the manufacturer indicates that these functions will be accessible “at least” until 2025. By then, the Korean manufacturer will review their copy and not force their customers to re-order.

Seedstars Africa Ventures secures $10.5 million from AfDB to invest in innovative businesses

0

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is set to invest USD 10.50 million in the capital of Seedstars Africa Ventures S.L.P. venture capital fund to enable it to invest in innovative African businesses with strong growth potential.

The investment will allow Seedstars Africa Ventures (SAV) to raise funds, expand its presence in Africa and attract other investors. Recently, EIB Global Equity invested $30 million into Seedstars through its Seedstars Africa Ventures I  aimed to support  innovative businesses and start-ups across Africa .

According to a statement ,the Bank agreed to invest USD 7 million from its ordinary resources and USD 3.5 million from the European Union Boost Africa programme.

Seedstars Africa Ventures is an early-stage venture capital fund investing in high-growth companies active across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The fund focuses on businesses that have strong potential, are generating income and tackling key challenges in the market. However, it also has investments in Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania.

It is estimated that the fund will help create 9,000 full-time jobs, 50% of them for women, and have a significant economic impact.

The fund’s objectives are in line with those of Boost Africa, which aims to invest in innovative start-ups that are growing strongly and having a positive social impact. Its investment strategy will strengthen that of the African Development Bank, which links entrepreneurship, investment and economic growth to poverty reduction and sustainable development. Apple Books Digital Narration is a new feature that Apple launched recently. This allows authors to create audiobooks from their existing ebooks using natural-sounding text-to-speech technology with voices that are based on human narrators. This feature makes the creation of audiobooks more affordable, and more accessible.

Authors at Publiseer who want to turn their ebooks into audiobooks can simply notify Publiseer, after which, their ebook is sent to Apple, who turns it into an audiobook and makes it available on the Apple Books store for sale. Approximately, it takes Apple two months to process this request and make the audiobook available in their store.

For new authors joining Publiseer, their ebooks are automatically sent to Apple to turn into an audiobook, except as stated otherwise by the author.

“Apple is a wonderful place for authors to garner new readers. It offers a very competitive royalty percentage, fosters book promotion, and stands out as one of the renowned retail bookstores that includes the book description in its search results, thus offering authors significant control over the search visibility of their books,” says Chidi Nwaogu, one of the founders of Publiseer.

How to Find a Trusted Online Casino

0

Delving into the online gambling world can be a complex endeavour, given the rapid proliferation of online casinos. It’s particularly challenging for those who are venturing into this digital environment for the first time. Identifying a trustworthy online casino is paramount to guaranteeing not only a safe but also an enjoyable gaming experience.

Key Factors in Choosing a Trusted Online Casino

The quest for a trustworthy online casino often begins with consulting a comprehensive Kenyan online casino list, which typically features a range of reputable and reliable sites. It’s essential to select casinos that are not only well-regarded for their solid reputation, but also have positive feedback from their user base and hold valid licenses from established gambling regulatory bodies.

Beyond the aspects of reputation and licensing, the overall user experience and the design of the casino’s website play a significant role. An intuitive interface, seamless navigation, and an organized selection of games contribute greatly to a player’s enjoyment and ease of use. Casinos that dedicate resources to refining the design and functionality of their site demonstrate their commitment to delivering a superior gaming experience to their customers.

Evaluating the Casino’s Track Record and Reputation

The duration and stability of a casino’s operation are critical factors in assessing its reliability. Casinos that have been operational for an extended period and are known for their equitable and transparent practices tend to be more dependable. Such casinos are often characterized by well-established customer support systems and efficient mechanisms for resolving disputes, contributing to a just and fair gaming atmosphere.

It’s also important to consider how well a casino adapts to changing trends in the industry and evolving player needs. Casinos that frequently refresh their gaming portfolio and update their features to meet the preferences of their clientele show a dedication to remaining pertinent and appealing to their audience. This willingness to evolve and adapt is indicative of a casino’s commitment to ensuring player contentment and satisfaction.

Licensing and Regulatory Compliance

Authentic online casinos are distinguished by their licenses, obtained from esteemed regulatory authorities. These licenses are a testament to the casino’s legal operations and its commitment to upholding high standards of player safety and game integrity. Players should always confirm the licensing information provided on the casino’s website and validate it with the respective regulatory body.

Equally crucial is the casino’s dedication to player advocacy and the promotion of responsible gambling. Reputable casinos go beyond mere compliance with regulations; they actively foster a gambling environment that emphasizes responsible behavior. They provide various tools and resources designed to assist players in managing their gaming activities responsibly, showcasing the casino’s ethical responsibility towards the welfare of its patrons.

Game Selection and Software Providers

The breadth and quality of games available, backed by reputable software developers, are crucial elements of an exceptional online gaming experience. Top-tier casinos boast an extensive selection of games, characterized by both their fairness and superior graphic and gameplay quality. Trustworthy casinos are regularly subject to independent audits, ensuring the integrity and randomness of their games.

In addition, the presence of innovative and contemporary game formats, like live dealer options and interactive slot games, signifies a casino’s commitment to offering a varied and up-to-date gaming experience. Such features reflect the casino’s dedication to staying at the forefront of the evolving trends within the online gambling sector.

Security Measures and Data Protection

In the realm of online gambling, the emphasis a casino places on security measures is a crucial factor. Elite online casinos incorporate cutting-edge encryption technology to protect the sensitive personal and financial data of their users. Players should prioritize casinos that demonstrate a proactive approach in regularly updating their security protocols to counteract new cyber threats effectively.

Consistent security assessments and obtaining certifications from independent and reputable agencies are significant indicators of a casino’s dedication to maintaining a secure environment. Casinos that openly display these certifications and consistently pass these stringent security checks are generally more trustworthy. Such practices illustrate the casino’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the privacy and security of its players’ data.

Payment and Withdrawal Processes

Top-tier online casinos provide an array of secure and user-friendly payment options, catering to a wide range of preferences. This includes commonly used methods such as credit cards and e-wallets, along with mobile payment solutions like Mpesa. A hallmark of reliable casinos is their transparency in payment processes, providing clear details about withdrawal timings, any associated fees, and ensuring uncomplicated withdrawal procedures.

Another critical aspect is the promptness of the casino’s payment system. Casinos that prioritize quick and smooth processing of both deposits and withdrawals demonstrate respect for their players’ time, reflecting their operational efficiency. In the fast-moving world of online gambling, such promptness in financial transactions is especially valued by players.

Customer Support Excellence

Outstanding customer service is a defining feature of a distinguished online casino. Such casinos typically provide a variety of support channels, including live chat, email, and telephone assistance, to ensure timely and effective help for their players. The presence of detailed FAQs and well-structured informational sections on the casino’s website is a testament to their dedication to customer care.

Additionally, the availability of in-depth guides and tutorials tailored for newcomers is a significant benefit. Casinos that offer these educational resources demonstrate a keen understanding of the diverse requirements of their player base. This is particularly beneficial for those who are just beginning their journey in online gambling, as it helps make the casino experience more approachable and enjoyable for all players.

Leveraging Player Reviews and Community Insights

Gathering insights from player reviews and community discussions is crucial in evaluating the trustworthiness of an online casino. Delving into discussions on online forums, perusing reviews on dedicated sites, and monitoring conversations on social media platforms can provide a wealth of information about the experiences of fellow players. An online casino that actively participates in these community spaces, responding to player inquiries and addressing concerns, clearly demonstrates a commitment to ensuring a satisfying player experience.

Conclusion

Choosing a reliable online casino requires meticulous attention to several critical aspects such as valid licensing, a diverse range of games, robust security protocols, flexible payment methods, and exceptional customer support. Through detailed research and seeking information from trustworthy sources, players can make well-informed decisions, paving the way for a safe and pleasurable experience in the world of online gambling.

A Large Game Library

, There are many more games to play in an online casino compared to a live casino. So, you have more options to choose from.

Bonuses

Though physical casinos offer rewards and bonuses to their players, their online counterparts are more generous in this aspect. They give welcome bonuses, deposit bonuses, and loyalty programs. VIP, cashback, etc.

Cons of Online Casinos

There’s a price to pay for the comfort, convenience, and other perks online casinos offer.

Online Casinos are Less Social Than Live Casinos

If you thrive on the social experience of playing in a live casino, this can be a problem. There will be no crowd of onlookers to cheer you on.

Kenya’s Data Centres: Powering the Digital Revolution

0

Kenya’s tech scene is booming, and at the heart of this growth lies a crucial infrastructure: data centres.

These secure facilities, housing vast networks of servers and storage systems, are the backbone of the digital world, underpinning everything from mobile banking to online shopping.

According to Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy Data Centre Standard Act 2019, “Data center is home to the computational power, storage, and applications necessary to supportan enterprise business. The data center infrastructure is central to the IT architecture, from which all content is sourced or passes through. Proper planning of the data center infrastructure design is critical, and performance, resiliency, and scalability need to be carefully considered.”

Connecting a Nation

Kenya boasts a vibrant data centre landscape, with Nairobi emerging as the regional hub. Major players like Africa Data Centres, IXAfrica, Linx Nairobi, Icolo, and PAIX Kenya offer state-of-the-art facilities that meet international standards. These centres provide vital connectivity, hosting the servers that power local and regional internet services, cloud computing platforms, and digital financial services.

Dan Kwach, Regional Executive – East Africa Region at Africa Data Centres in Forbes Kenya Magazine 2023 noted, “E-commerce in Kenya has surged, particularly when it comes to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) . This is fueling a demand for more data centers in the region and will continue to do so for some time.”

Unlocking Economic Potential

Data centres play a crucial role in driving Kenya’s economic growth. They create jobs, attract foreign investment, and enable local businesses to compete globally. By storing and processing data locally, companies can reduce latency and improve efficiency, while also ensuring data security and compliance with Kenyan regulations.

Key principles of Data Centre Standards Act 2019:

  • Flexibility and scalability: The data center should be able to adapt to changing needs and workloads. This includes considerations for site location, building selection, floor layout, and modularity.
  • Reliability and availability: The data center must be highly reliable and available to ensure uninterrupted government operations. This involves redundancy in power, cooling, and network infrastructure.
  • Security: The data center must be secure from physical and cyber threats. This includes robust physical security measures, access control systems, and data encryption.
  • Energy efficiency: The data center should be designed and operated to minimize energy consumption. This can be achieved through efficient cooling systems, power management strategies, and the use of renewable energy sources.
  • Sustainability: The data center should be designed and operated with environmental considerations in mind. This includes minimizing water usage, reducing waste, and using recycled materials.

Boosting Innovation

The availability of reliable data centres fosters a climate of innovation. With access to secure cloud platforms and high-speed internet, Kenyan entrepreneurs and startups can develop cutting-edge solutions in areas like fintech, healthcare, and agriculture. This, in turn, creates new opportunities and improves the lives of millions across the nation.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite the progress, Kenya’s data centre sector faces challenges. Power outages and limited fibre optic infrastructure remain hurdles. Investing in renewable energy sources and expanding fibre optic networks is crucial for ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.

However, it is worth noting that power and network and power redundancy is a vital need for these data centres. TechMoran has toured three data centres in Kenya namely: Icolo, Paix and Africa Data Centres and for sure these data centres prioritize network and power redundancy.

Also, green power is taking a leap in the Kenya’s data centres stage. The three named data centres have laid solar panels to compliment the main source of power from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company {KPLC}.

Kenyans should be glad that Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019, is a landmark piece of legislation that empowers them to control their personal information and ensures responsible data handling by organizations. The following are responsibilities of data controllers and processors

  • Registration: Organizations that process personal data above certain thresholds must register with the Data Protection Commissioner.
  • Data Protection Impact Assessments: For high-risk data processing activities, organizations must conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Data Breach Notifications: Organizations must report data breaches to the Data Protection Commissioner and affected individuals within specified timeframes.

The Data Protection Commissioner has the power to investigate complaints, issue compliance notices, and impose fines of up to Sh5 million or imprisonment for non-compliance.

Nigerian entrepreneur Iyin Aboyeji and Mia von Koschitzky-Kimani have teamed up to launch Accelerate Africa, a tech accelerator backed by a $750,000 USAID grant.

Aiming to become the “Y Combinator of Africa,” the tech accelerator will run an eight-week program for pre-seed and seed-stage startups across all sectors in 54 African countries. The founder says they will focus on honing storytelling, team building, business development, and product development skills based out of Nairobi and Lagos.

Successful entrepreneurs and Venture Capital founders, Iyin Aboyeji and Mia von Koschitzky-Kimani have teamed up to launch Accelerate Africa, a tech accelerator backed by a $750,000 USAID grant.

Aiming to become the “Y Combinator of Africa,” the program empowers early-stage startups across all sectors and countries in Africa.

With Y Combinator scaling back its African focus, Accelerate Africa rises to support ambitious founders with promising ideas.

Mr Aboyeji sees opportunities for startups who excel in Accelerate Africa but wouldn’t make it into YC’s current program.

The venture offers both funding and credibility to startups, leveraging Aboyeji’s deep understanding of the African market and Koschitzky-Kimani’s VC experience.

It is worth noting that in-person sessions in Nairobi and Lagos provide tailored guidance and a network of investors beyond just Future Africa.

Unlike YC, Accelerate Africa focuses on securing follow-on funding for startups through investor connections, not program investments.

Startups pitch to angel investors, Series A and B firms, and potentially Future Africa, with Mr Aboyeji assuring fair competition and information segregation.

While Accelerate Africa and Future Africa are separate entities, some staff overlap raises concerns about potential bias.

Mr Aboyeji clarifies their commitment to transparency and ethical practices, assuring startups that information is not shared with potential competitors. He noted”We’re not signing NDAs, but we have no interest in building startups ourselves.”

Key Highlights of Accelerate Africa:

  • Eight-week program for pre-seed and seed-stage startups across all sectors and 54 African countries.
  • Focus on honing storytelling, team building, business development, and product development skills.
  • In-person program operating concurrently in Nairobi and Lagos, led by Aboyeji and Koschitzky-Kimani respectively.
  • Funding not guaranteed, but startups will have the opportunity to pitch to a network of investors, including Future Africa.
  • Emphasis on providing an African perspective and guidance tailored to the continent’s unique market realities.

UNDP and African Leaders launch Timbuktoo Initiative to support Africa’s startup ecosystem

0

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with African leaders has launched the “timbuktoo” initiative aimed to unleash Africa’s startup revolution.

In a special session of the World Economic Forum at its 24th Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, H.E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, H.E. President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, HE Wamkele Mene and UNDP Administrator Mr Achim Steiner presented the initiative, which is positioned to be the world’s largest financing facility bringing catalytic and commercial capital together to support Africa’s startup ecosystem.

“We cannot accept that another generation of African young people do not have the tools to reach their full potential,” emphasized HE Paul Kagame, who announced an immediate contribution of US$3 million to start the timbuktoo Africa Innovation Fund which will be hosted in Kigali. “With timbuktoo’s billion-dollar target, we can create more opportunities for Africa’s youth to put their talent and creativity to good use.”

Attended by global corporate leaders, as well as African financial institutions, the occasion marked what is considered a major step in sparking the African Startup Revolution, harnessing the momentum of Africa’s major youth demographic and abundance of innovative talent.

The  timbuktoo initiative which is promoted by UNDP aims to address critical gaps and work with African governments, investors, corporates, and universities, to support the African startup ecosystem.

“For many African countries, our foremost challenge now is to ensure we put in place the right structures to enable young Africans to create innovative and compelling businesses that can contribute significantly to job creation and sustainable economic growth,” highlighted HE Nana Akufo-Addo. “I’m excited about the future of our continent. I look forward to seeing us create a future where innovation is encouraged, ingenuity is supported and prosperity is shared.”

Currently, Africa’s share of global startup value stands at just 0.2 percent, compared to 2 percent of global trade value. The vast majority, 89 percent, of venture capital coming into Africa is foreign capital and 83 percent is concentrated in four countries: Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt, with over 60 percent of capital flowing to one sector, fintech.

With an unparalleled surge in private venture capital investments, growing six times faster than the global average in 2022, a vibrant youthful population and rapidly expanding tech startups, Africa is a future tech powerhouse. Key African companies are already leading in some global digital technologies, such as mobile money, and millions of people are leapfrogging traditional development paths.

timbuktoo’s ambition is to mobilize and invest US$ 1 billion of catalytic and commercial capital to transform 100 million livelihoods and create 10 million dignified new jobs. What makes timbuktoo unique is its design, which blends commercial and catalytic capital to de-risk private investment, with a pan-African approach to supporting startups, while also focusing on the whole ecosystem, engaging and deepening the linkages between government policy, universities, corporates, development partners, catalytic partners, and commercial investors.

0

The long awaited AI heavy Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is finally here. The tech giant took the stage to announce their new flagship smartphone which brings a new camera, AI features, flat screen and new materials.

At first glance, the Galaxy S24 Ultra looks very similar to the S23 Ultra, but upon closer inspection, you notice that the curved display is fully gone. The Galaxy S24 Ultra flat screen is a 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a variable refresh rate that goes from 1Hz up to 120Hz. It is also brighter hitting 2600 nits thanks to an improved Vision Booster.

The frame is now made of a titanium alloy instead of aluminum. Titanium is more durable and scratch-resistant than aluminum without increasing the weight – the Galaxy S24 Ultra is actually a gram lighter than the S23 Ultra. The new Ultra is a bit thinner (0.3mm), and shorter (1.1mm), thanks largely to slimmer bezels. Glass-wise, the S24 Ultra employs a new Gorilla Glass Armor on the front and rear that’s 4x tougher to crack and 75% less reflective.

This year, all Ultra devices will run on the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 “for Galaxy” version which is usually higher-clocked compared to the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 other brands flagships are getting. The S24 Ultra also has a nearly twice bigger vapor chamber to keep maintain high performance even in intensive tasks without the device overheating.

Rounding up the firepower is 12GB of RAM and either 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage.  The whole package runs on Android 14 with One UI 6.1 from the box and will get an industry leading 7 years of software support.

The new chip enables next gen AI features which include Live Translate, Interpreter, and Chat Assist enable two-way real-time voice and text translation. Live Translate lives inside the native phone app, Interpreter is a split-screen app that transcripts live conversations between two people in two different languages. Chat Assist helps make translated conversations natural and lives inside the Samsung Keyboard. These features work in 13 languages at launch.

Inside Samsung Notes, Note Assist will summarize notes, create templates and covers, and streamline notes with pre-made formats.

Transcript Assist will transcribe, summarize, and translate recordings using AI and Speech-to-Text.

Circle to Search is a gesture-driven feature made in collaboration with Google. Just long press on the home button and you’ll be able to circle, highlight, scribble on, or tap anything on the screen to get search results – like the name of the landmark in the background of someone’s photo in Instagram.

In terms of photography, the S24 Ultra has a new 50MP 5x (115mm) telephoto camera with optical stabilization and an f/3.4 lens which enables the new 5x optical zoom. The other cameras seem to be borrowed from S23 Ultra, they include the huge 200MP 23mm f/1.7 wide angle unit, 12MP 13mm f/2.2 ultrawide shooter with AF, and a 10MP 69mm f/2.4 short telephoto. Upfront, there’s a 12MP 26mm f/2.2 selfie camera. As you would expect, the photography has a lot of AI features a backed in.

Microsoft launches Copilot Pro and a corporate version with tons of features for a monthly subscription.

0

Microsoft is boosting its AI might with two new offerings, the Copilot Pro and the corporate-focused Copilot for Microsoft 365, they both promise more AI features but for a monthly subscription.

The Copilot Pro, which rolls out today, cost the same with OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, which goes for $20 per month in return for access to the most cutting-edge features.

According to Microsoft, this Pro version is designed to function as a “single AI experience that runs across your devices, understanding your context on the web, on your PC, across your apps and soon on your phone.”

Copilot Pro will bring a ton of improvements over  the free version including “priority access” to OpenAI’s latest AI model GPT-4 Turbo even during peak usage times and the ability to toggle between different GPT models in a later update instead of being stuck to the free GPT 3.5.

For those who are into image generation, Copilot Pro offers better access to Microsoft’s AI Image Creator by distributing “100 boosts” per day. This means subscribers will receive priority access to generate 100 image-based requests, up from a mere 15 for free users.

On top of that, the Pro version lets users build custom Copilot GPTs focused on select topics. Microsoft plans on enabling this feature through an upcoming “Copilot GPT Builder” which is said to only need a “set of simple prompts,” to create a custom GPT.

As we wait for that update, Microsoft isn’t rest on its laurels; it’s already building its own GPTs focused on specific purposes such as fitness, travel, and cooking, and more. OpenAI, already launched its GPT Store last week which lets users try out custom GPTs made by others.

In addition to Copilot Pro, Microsoft also announced the corporate-focused Copilot for Microsoft 365. It can harness all kinds of corporate data including emails, meetings, documents, and chats but it costs more than the Pro.

“Customers can purchase between one and 299 seats for $30 per person per month,” Microsoft said. Users will also need to already be using Microsoft 365 Business Standard or Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
