BlackBerry Messenger is over the top compared to competitor messenger apps.

1

BlackBerry-Logo-Mobile-2012BlackBerry is not unduly worried about competition from instant messenger WhatsApp saying that BlackBerry Messenger engaged its users more than the app despite having fewer users.

Both BlackBerry Messanger and WhatsApp users exchange 10 billion messages a day on each platform at least according to a study by BlackBerry a month ago. However, BBM has a fifth of the users of WhatsApp at 85 million.

Blackberry Messenger is preferred to other apps as they are more private and personal; the app doesn’t publish details like “last seen at”, one cannot pull out saved contacts of a mobile handset and add it to the chat and finally one has to exchange a PIN number to be added into the group. It is a closed chat app while other instant messengers are open and are more vocal in nature with group chats exchanging jokes and others.

BBM has a unique feature that tells the user that a message sent has been read by the intended person the feature of security to it makes it an official communication tool. With the option of video chat and voice calls in its messaging app makes a difference compared to others.

“Our enterprise users know it is secure to chat on BBM. The chat cannot be copied and sent like in others. Added to that, the log of conversation can be audited and retrieved on the enterprise version of BBM, which cannot be done on any other platform,” said managing director,  Sunil Lalvani

FOXit’s Begins Its Project Server Report Pack Roll-Out

Anita Potgieter, COO at FOXit
Anita Potgieter, COO at FOXit

One of South Africa’s providers of project and portfolio management services, FOXit has rolled out its Project Server Report Packs.

The Project Server Report Packs empower users with this level of information in a format that is accessible, clearly visible and customizable to reflect the progress of any project in any sized venture.

FOXit devised and incorporated Project Server Report Packs in order to help businesses better manage the project management process and allocate resources more strategically.

The Packs incorporate a number of modules that cover every aspect of project management and governance, including project status, timesheet per resource, project assignments and projects by department. These form part of sub-packs including the Project Pack and Resource Pack.

“Every project managed environment would like to execute every project within its portfolio. Sadly, there are always constraints forcing projects to be prioritized according to the needs of the business, budget and resources. Project Server provides built-in functionality allowing portfolio managers to prioritize projects against a scorecard. The Portfolio prioritisation score card allows stakeholders to report on this valuable information. The report indicates the name of the project sponsor, project owner, which project phase the project is currently in, which department will be executing it as well as the ratings against the relevant company drivers,” explains Anita Potgieter, COO at FOXit.

The Status Report is a visual report that indicates the progress of the project – i.e. how much of every project in the portfolio has actually been completed.

The Proposal Pack includes a Governance Phase. As Potgieter explains, organizations that have matured to the stage of governing the project process need to know the status of each project within each phase. Vital information such as the cost, Proposed Start and Finish Dates, amount of days in current phase, Proposal Cost, amount of work, as well as the progress in the completion of a current phase are shown.

Dierdre Strydom, CEO at FOXit, explains: “It depicts critical information that is needed on a daily basis, information such as ‘who is doing what, when and why’. This enables end-users and role players to assess the risk of where there might be an over- or under -allocation of resources. It also offers the client a discounted model. However, if there is a requirement for only one specific report, this can also be accommodated. All reports are customizable in accordance with the requirements of the client.”

FOXit is Microsoft partner with Gold certification across numerous competencies within the Microsoft Partner Network, including Project and Portfolio Management, Portals and Collaboration and as an Independent Software Vendor (ISV).

Nigeria’s TrafficButter Launches to Make Traffic Jams Delicious

0

TrafficButter_LogoNigeria’s TrafficButter is a traffic reporting Mobile App developed in Android, Blackberry, and iOS. It is a platform for motorists to connect with other road users around so they can share real-time traffic and road info, saving everyone fuel money, time and beating stress on their daily journeys.

TechMoran spoke with Dele Oluwole and this is what he told us what they are up to.

Why the name?

Permit me to respond to this question in the words of Uche Okafor, the founder of TrafficButter  ….People often wonder why I picked the name TRAFFICBUTTER? My thinking was: Since it is mostly either BUTTER OR JAM, and I hate traffic JAMS; I decided to pick the converse: traffic BUTTER”. The Idea also is that when Jam is being spread on toast, the application of butter makes it smoother and a lot easier.

What does it do? How does it work?

These are the features and how TrafficButter works

1.    Geolocation feature; with the geolocation feature on TrafficButter Mobile App, finding roads have become easier. The App triangulates users locations and show them roads around so they can make informed decisions when approaching or in a traffic congestion.

2.    Following roads for auto alert messages; Users can now follow only the roads/routes that they are interested in and receive alert messages as incidents are uploaded on these routes allowing them to plan before they begin their journeys.

3.    Map; every road/route with an incident is shown on a map on the Mobile App for road users to quickly ascertain what is happening on their road(s) of interest.

4.    Ranking & Rewards  for reporting; the more road incidents a user updates on the App, the more points they earn, and the closer they are to wining variety of promotional gifts.

5.    Road search; user can do instant search for a road and get to know if there is an incident on it.

6.    Chat; TrafficButter Mobile App also afford users the opportunity to socialise and meet new people on the chat page

Who are the founders? Tell us more about yourselves?

TrafficButter Mobile App is the product of the merger between TrafficButter twitter handle and JonyWaka Mobile App. Uche Okafor founded TrafficButter in 2010 and Dele Oluwole founded JonnyWaka in 2013.

What inspired you to launch a traffic application than just do any other business?

In 2010 Uche, on his way to work thought of how he could twit and share info so people could avoid Traffic Jams. Not long after he started TrafficButter. Dele watched a youtube clip on how Ghanaians go through traffic hell to commute to and from work and that was how the conception and design of JonnyWaka Mobile App started.

What do you plan to use your data for?

The traffic incident data we use are from the people and are used by the people.

Any local competition? How unique are you from the competition?

We are not in a competition of any kind.  There may be organisations wanting to be like us and others offering similar but what we have done is simply look at what is lacking and added the extras to our Mobile App to make life for the Nigerian commuter loads better. TrafficButter Mobile App is a service to and for the people.

Do you have any affiliations or partnerships?

Indeed, there is a relationship between JonnyWaka New Zealand and TrafficButter Nigeria. There are other affiliations which are presently are being worked on and evolving.

tumblr_m66ho4js3A1qcokc4o1_1280How big is your team?

We have a number of people working for us and the team is growing across Nigeria, Great Britain, Ghana, and New Zealand.

Where do you expect your business to be in 2 years?

To empower Africans tackle traffic congestion so they can travel stress free. We can only achieve this by being in most African countries. We are already in Nigeria and Ghana with Kenya and South Africa in view.

Any plans to expand countrywide?

Certainly, at least to the major cities where there are usually Traffic and bottlenecks. Our goal is to be the number one African Traffic report and social App and then to reach out to other part of the world. So far, we are impressed with the reception since launching.

How is doing online business in Nigeria? Any challenges or opportunities in the Nigerian tech scene?

Just like other part of the world the Nigerian online business has its own challenges, but the potential is enormous for foreign investors.

Are you angel funded or you are bootstrapping?

We are 100% self funded.

MTN Group Looking Beyond Voice to Expand its Product Offering

0

MTN_Logo_onlyThough voice contributed to 75% of the firm’s R136 495 million revenue from its 207,8 million subscribers in 22 countries across Africa and Middle East, MTN Group is looking beyond voice for growth and digital dominance.

As a revenue earner, MTN says voice continued to face pressure due to aggressive price competition and lower mobile termination rates, which caused a decrease of 1,8 percentage points in its contribution to overall revenue.

According to the firm in its 2013 financial statement,”We continue to explore opportunities to expand our product offering outside of traditional voice and expect to increase our presence in the digital space by leveraging technology and maximising the opportunity of low internet penetration in our markets.”

MTN’s plan to venture into the digital entrepreneurship space affirms its recent partnership with Rocket Internet and Millicom in Africa and Middle East to build eCommerce business. The firm says the partnership with Rocket Internet will enhance growth in its internet business in Africa and the Middle East. MTN invested around $410 million in both deals set to be complete by the first quarter of this year.

MTN Group will co-own with Rocket Internet all ventures under the Middle East Internet Holding and own a third of Rocket Internet and Millicom’s Africa Internet Holdings.

Apart frominternet businesses, MTN says it’s segmented offerings as well as value-added products and services remain priorities going forward. The firm said its expanding its 3G coverage and enabling access to affordable data-enabled devices to support strong growth in data usage and as well provide innovative ICT solutions to corporate and SME customers and MTN Mobile Money and broader financial services.During the year, data services were the key driver of the Group’s revenue growth and increased their contribution by 3,1 percentage points to 15,1%. The number of data users increased by 37,4% to 80,6 million as we expanded our 3G networks and stimulated the adoption of data-enabled devices and smartphones. With over 34.8 million smartphones on its network, an increase of 59,0% in the previous year and its new affordable “Steppa” smartphone, MTN expects to earn more from data this year.

India’s iKaaz Launches in Nigeria to Introduce NFC Payments to Over 100 Million Low-End Phones

iKaaz-YourStory-AfricaNigeria has over 150 million mobile phone users, many of them using basic and internet enabled feature phones even though the smartphone user population is growing by the minute. Many of these phones can’t stand NFC-Powered mobile payments.

However, iKaaz, a Bangalore-based mobile payments platform for enterprises in emerging markets has launched in the country to offer its innovative NFC-powered tap and pay services to Nigerian merchants and consumers, miraculously on their feature phones.

iKaaz has a tag which converts any phone into an NFC-enabled one for consumers while for merchants, it has a reader for them to plug into their mobile phones and turn them into mobile point of sales points. This gives a customer an NFC-enabled phone as long as they get the tag and the merchant, a reader to receive payments.

“It is encouraging to see that African partners are very interested in embracing NFC-based innovative mobile payments solutions. We are also extremely proud to have the opportunity to partner with FCMB Bank here in Nigeria,” said Soma Sundaram, Founder & CEO of iKaaz.

iKaaz provides a comprehensive suite of end-to-end mobile payments solutions that include a feature rich mobile wallet, an innovative – yet cost effective mPOS (mobile Point of Sale) and a robust payments platform that allows banks, operators and financial institutions to extend mobile payments to their customers in a fast, secure and cost effective manner.

Consumers use NFC tags that are linked to the mobile wallet similar to a debit card that is linked to bank accounts; while merchants on the other hand, will use iKaaz NFC mPOS to complete transactions all of which are processed by iKaaz’s robust payments platform.

entrepreneurBarclays Africa Group Limited (Barclays Africa) has acquired a 49% stake in RainFin, South Africa’s leading peer-to-peer marketplace, in a move that is set to give a major boost to the emerging sector of lending exchanges and social lending in South Africa.

According to Sean Emery CEO: RainFin in a statement, “We are excited to announce that Barclays Africa Group Limited (Barclays Africa) has acquired a 49% stake in our business. This investment of tens of millions of rands into RainFin by one of the world’s leading financial institutions is terrific news for our lenders and borrowers alike because it gives us the working capital, credit and risk expertise, and access to liquidity in order to grow our business and improve our offerings.”

Emery says the Barclays Africa’s deal confirms that peer-to-peer lending is here to stay and the firm will use the cash to grow its customer base, bringing even more lenders and borrowers into the network, benefiting everyone who has supported us from the outset. Barclays Africa’s support will the firm to offer exciting new products in areas such as supply chain finance, enterprise development funding, fixed asset purchases and even mid-sized corporate debt and expand into new markets.

1184849_627995373903808_790791848_nFounded in South Africa in November 2011, RainFin is an online social lending marketplace that elimantes banks by linking borrowers directly with Lenders safely, quickly and cheaply. The social lending community uses technology to allow users to borrow with conditions far better than in the traditional collateralised loan market and Lenders can experience the benefits of lower fees and better interest.

The Barclays Africa investment in RainFin follows a lot of increasing interesty in the global peer-to-peer industry from the UK and US to China and India with peer-to-peer lenders such as Lending Club and Prosper in the US enjoying triple digit growth and getting funding from venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital and BlackRock.

Worldwide hedge funds, and institutional investors all exploring ways to collaborate with peer-to-peer lenders such as City Group, Capital One, Bank of Montreal and Deutsche Bank buying up loans originated through those platforms. With institutions moving into the market, peer-to-peer loans have truly come of age. Barclays Africa will do the same to make our concept of peer-to-peer lending a mainstream finance option in South Africa.

Nokia Targets Kenyan App Developers By Launching Imaging SDK 1.1

Looks like the Kenyan app developers will be having a better experience in making imaging-based apps as Nokia has introduced the latest version of the Nokia Imaging Software Development Kit (SDK).

With the Nokia Imaging SDK 1.1, developers will have access to a powerful library of exciting image manipulation tools, which makes creating the next generation of imaging apps for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.1 devices quicker and easier.

Nokia’s Developer Relations lead in East Africa, Moses Sitati, said the library’s functions don’t put a strain on the user’s device, which makes editing high resolution images swift and engaging.

Nokia says that since they launched the first SDK in July last year, more than 1,500 apps used the technology. With the new update, developers will be able to embed features usually reserved for ‘higher-end’ Lumia devices which means zooming and rotating will be much more fluid fashion on devices such as the Lumia 520.
“It’s the same technology used in Nokia’s own apps that we’re bringing to the SDK. Our team has really been able to optimize the technology so that the kind of image-centric functionality seen on higher-end Lumias is now possible in a very fluid fashion, even on a device like the Lumia 520, which is quite remarkable in this industry when you compare to some of the competitors. This tool blurs the line between products such as the Lumia 1020 and the Lumia 520,” said Sitati.

With the new update, even more Lumia owners are in store for increased photographic potential, as outlined by its key features like:-

  • support for Windows 8.1 – desktop and RT – The shared API now allows Windows 8.1 desktop computers to create compatible software using the SDK.
  •   Optimizedperformance = smother running – Thanks to the SDK, developers can now embed features usually reserved for ‘higher-end’ Lumias. This means, zooming and rotating in a much more fluid fashion on more affordable devices.
  • The ability to add Lens Blur (or ‘Bokeh’) and ‘Single Image HDR’ effects to images
  • The same Nokia technology is used by all imaging apps.

From the team that created apps such as Nokia Storyteller and Creative Studio, this library brings the same underlying technology to developers. With a single API call, developers can build similar ‘wow’ experiences such as the Lumia’s ability to effortlessly re-frame and freely rotate pictures taken with a 41MP camera.
These are apps such as tuvitu which has by developer 5 million downloads with only one year on the app store while most surprising is Shoot Scorpion on the series 40 which in just one quarter has almost clocked 1 million downloads.
According to Nokia’s developer engagement, innovation and corporate relations manager Moses Sitati this has been made possible by assisting developers to recognize interest areas for users while at the same time focus on a global user audience.

“When most developers join us many have a local focus with apps mainly meant for the local audience. However with the mentoring that we give them we help them identify areas they can easily monetize and apps that will interest more people,” he said.
Sitati says that the Windows app store currently has hundreds of Kenyan apps from about 100 developers who were invited to build apps for Nokia through partnerships with Mlab, universities and independent developers.

“We have developers who are making as much as $5000 a month easy through creating their apps for a niche market. We are however noticing a challenge in creation of games up that require more training and higher skill level,” he adds.
Normally training for games development takes between 6 and 10 weeks as compared to other apps that takes less than 6 weeks.
Sitati says that the area has a lot of potential with one of the few developers who has been creating such apps making about $600 a day.

Nokia has partnership with a number of incubation hubs in Nairobi including iHub and M-lab which help it engage developers for critical projects as well as for competitions
