Sky.Garden relaunches after a Kshs 250 Million Investment from Lipa Later Group to Power Social Commerce in Kenya

0

Online retailer Sky.Garden has relaunched following a Kshs 250 million buyout by the Lipa Later Group early this month saving it from closure and eventual loss of investor money after the Kenyan ecommerce startup failed to raise follow-on funding.

With the acquisition and revamp, Sky.Garden is no longer just about e-commerce but is moving into social commerce and is building a merchant marketplace to connect 100,000 merchants in the next year. Globally, social commerce is expected to grow three times as fast as traditional commerce to $1.2 trillion by 2025, up from $492 billion currently. Growth is predicted to be driven primarily by Gen Z and Millennial social media users, accounting for 62% of global social commerce spend by 2025. Social commerce is poised to take a large chunk of the e-commerce market as consumers gravitate to shopping on social apps.

According to Juliet Wanjiru, Head of E-commerce Sky.Garden, ‘Today marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Sky.Garden, as we embark on a transformative journey to enhance and broaden our offerings for both merchants and customer communities.’

By Introducing innovative products such as Sky.Tickets, Sky. Logistics, Sky. Commerce, and Sky.Wallet, we are diversifying our merchant categories to include a dynamic online marketplace for services and events. Notably, Sky.Wallet will offer tailored solutions, empowering merchants with access to financing, real-time transaction monitoring, direct bill payments (including utility bills and salaries), seamless deposits and withdrawals to Mpesa or Bank, and the ability to open a bank account. This ensures comprehensive financial support for businesses, powering all merchant transactions.”

In 2021, Sky Garden secured a $4 million Series A investment led by The SANAD Fund for MSME including  Aavishkaar, the Uncovered Fund, and other angel investors. At the time, the platform was serving more than 15,000 sellers and said it would use the fund to expand their operations to cities in East Africa and scale this to the rest of the Sub- Saharan region.

Dubbed as the the Sky.Garden ecosystem, the new platform encompasses not only the convenience of online shopping but also the infrastructure for local businesses to thrive. From seamless payment solutions to logistic support, marketing tools, and business insights. Entrepreneurs can build, grow, and expand their ventures within our ecosystem, while shoppers enjoy an unparalleled variety of products, services, and a shopping experience that continually evolves to meet their needs.

Sky.Logistics aims to offer same-day delivery for customers. Sky.Garden has also introduced Buy Now, Pay Later, powered by LipaLater as a convenient alternative payment option, providing flexibility and ease in transactions.

Its leap into social commerce with Sky.Commerce is expected to revolutionize the online shopping experience by seamlessly integrating social interactions with e-commerce. This innovative platform will allow shoppers to discover, share, and purchase products directly within their social networks. Merchants on the other hand will be able to reduce their online interactions and make sales all the time from anywhere.

The relaunch coincides with the rapid expansion of e-commerce markets in Kenya and other African countries, driven by factors such as increased internet penetration and more affordable data costs.

Growing internet access is expected to boost the African e-commerce market in the upcoming years. By 2030, the internet penetration in the region will reach an average of nearly 70%, according to Euromonitor — a considerable jump from 45% in 2023. Most of the access revolution is due to mobile connectivity with 83% of the African population currently covered by a mobile broadband network, according to GSMA.

“Our group vision is to be a commerce catalyst for businesses and communities across Africa. We firmly believe that local ownership and operation are essential in understanding the needs of our people, contributing to the prosperity of our nation, and forging a true connection with our community. This local insight has empowered us to bring the vast world of e-commerce closer to Kenyans while simultaneously creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and merchants to thrive,” concluded Lipa Later, Group CEO Eric Muli.

The Essential Guide to Water Purification, Ensuring Clean and Safe Drinking Water

0

In a world where access to clean water is essential for sustaining life, the importance of water purification cannot be overstated. Water, a fundamental resource for human survival, is often contaminated with various pollutants and impurities that can pose serious health risks. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the significance of water purification, the different methods available, and why it is crucial for ensuring clean and safe drinking water.

The Importance of Water Purification

Water is a universal solvent, capable of dissolving a wide range of substances. Unfortunately, this also means that water can easily become contaminated with pollutants such as bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and other harmful microorganisms. Consuming contaminated water can lead to waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, causing significant harm to human health.

Water purification plays a crucial role in removing or neutralizing these contaminants, ensuring that the water we consume is safe and free from harmful substances. This is especially important as the sources of water, including rivers, lakes, and groundwater, are vulnerable to pollution from industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and human activities.

Common Water Contaminants

Before delving into water purification methods, it’s essential to understand the common contaminants found in water:

  1. Bacteria and Viruses: Harmful microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Hepatitis A can contaminate water sources, leading to waterborne illnesses.
  2. Chemical Pollutants: Pesticides, fertilizers, heavy metals, and industrial chemicals can seep into water sources, posing serious health risks when consumed.
  3. Sediments: Particles and sediments in water can affect its taste, odor, and appearance. While not always harmful, they can indicate poor water quality.
  4. Dissolved Solids: Minerals, salts, and other dissolved solids can affect the taste and safety of water. High concentrations of these substances may lead to health issues.
  5. Protozoa and Parasites: Organisms like Giardia and Cryptosporidium can cause gastrointestinal issues and other health problems.

Water Purification Methods

Several methods are employed to purify water, each targeting specific contaminants. Here are some common water purification techniques:

  1. Boiling: One of the simplest methods, boiling water kills most bacteria, viruses, and parasites. However, it may not remove chemical contaminants or dissolved solids.
  2. Filtration: Filtration involves passing water through a physical barrier, like a fine mesh or porous material, to remove particles, sediments, and some microorganisms. Water filters vary in their effectiveness, so choosing the right one is crucial.
  3. Chemical Disinfection: Chemicals like chlorine, iodine, and chlorine dioxide can be added to water to kill or inactivate microorganisms. However, the taste and odor of the water may be affected.
  4. Reverse Osmosis: This advanced filtration process uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, and dissolved solids. It is highly effective but may produce wastewater.
  5. Distillation: Distillation involves boiling water to produce steam, which is then condensed back into liquid form. This process removes contaminants that have a higher boiling point than water. However, it may not eliminate some volatile chemicals.
  6. Ultraviolet (UV) Purification: UV light is used to disrupt the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce. While effective against bacteria and viruses, it may not remove other contaminants.

The Role of Water Purification in Everyday Life

Water purification is not only essential for communities and regions with inadequate access to clean water but also for individuals in urban areas. Municipal water treatment facilities play a crucial role in ensuring that tap water meets safety standards. However, relying solely on public water sources may not be sufficient, as contaminants can still enter the water supply through aging infrastructure or unforeseen events.

Many households invest in water purification systems to add an extra layer of protection and improve the taste and quality of their drinking water. Whether through simple pitcher filters or more sophisticated under-sink systems, these technologies empower individuals to take control of their water quality.

Conclusion

In conclusion, water purification is a vital process that safeguards human health by ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water. With various contaminants threatening water sources worldwide, implementing effective purification methods is more crucial than ever. Whether through traditional methods like boiling and filtration or advanced technologies like reverse osmosis and UV purification, the goal remains the same – to provide communities and individuals with water that is free from harmful impurities.

As consumers, understanding the significance of water purification empowers us to make informed choices about the water we consume. By investing in reliable purification methods and supporting initiatives that promote water quality, we contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future where access to clean water is a universal right.

Elevating Your NFL Betting Experience

Imagine a world where placing bets on NFL games is not just thrilling but also effortless and secure. That’s the promise of biometrics and identity verification in online NFL betting. No more tedious forms, endless verifications, or security concerns. In this guide, we delve into the game-changing role of biometrics in revolutionizing how we engage with NFL lines.

The Power of Biometrics in Identity Verification

Identity verification has long been a necessary step in online betting. Ensuring the person on the other end of the screen is who they claim to be is crucial for the integrity of the game. Traditional methods like usernames and passwords have their limitations – they can be forgotten, stolen, or shared. Biometrics, on the other hand, offers a unique solution.

Biometrics: Your Digital Fingerprint

Biometrics uses distinct physical or behavioral characteristics to verify a person’s identity. This can include fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, voice recognition, and even iris scans. Each of these methods provides a highly secure and convenient way to confirm a bettor’s identity.

Why Biometrics Matters for NFL Betting

Biometrics has become a game-changer in the world of NFL betting for several compelling reasons. First and foremost, it significantly enhances security. With biometric data, the risk of unauthorized access is drastically reduced. It’s nearly impossible for someone to impersonate you when your fingerprint or face is your ticket to bet on NFL lines.

Enhanced Security Measures

Biometric Encryption: Your Shield Against Fraud

Biometric data is not stored in a format that can be easily hacked or replicated. Advanced encryption techniques protect your biometric information, making it extremely difficult for malicious actors to compromise your identity. This level of security is a game-changer for NFL betting enthusiasts.

Wearable Tech and Betting: How Smartwatches and Fitness Trackers Are Changing the Game

In the world of sports betting, staying ahead of the curve is key. Gone are the days when betting was solely reliant on intuition and guesswork. Today, wearable technology and fitness trackers have emerged as game-changers, providing invaluable insights for bettors. In this in-depth exploration, we delve into how these smart devices are reshaping the landscape of sports betting and offer insights on how to bet on sports online more effectively.

The Wearable Revolution

How Wearable Tech is Transforming Sports Betting

Wearable technology, from smartwatches to fitness trackers, has witnessed a surge in popularity, changing the game in the world of sports betting. With real-time data on athletes’ performance, these devices have become invaluable tools for bettors, offering essential information on how to bet on sports online and make informed decisions.

Access to Real-time Data

One of the primary advantages of wearable tech is its ability to provide bettors with real-time data. Imagine watching a basketball game, and your smartwatch updates you on the player’s heart rate, distance covered, and fatigue levels. Armed with this information, you can make more calculated bets, such as predicting when a player might need a rest or when they are in peak condition to score.

Enhanced Betting Strategies

Wearable tech enables bettors to fine-tune their strategies. By analyzing data collected over time, you can identify trends in athlete performance and make more informed bets. For instance, if you notice that a certain tennis player’s heart rate spikes in high-pressure situations, you might consider placing a bet on their opponent during crucial points.

Empowering Sports Betting

How to Bet on Sports Online

While wearable tech provides valuable data, knowing how to bet on sports online is equally essential. Here are some key steps to get started:

  1. Choose a Reputable Sportsbook: Select an online sportsbook with a good reputation and user-friendly interface. Look for competitive odds and a wide range of betting options.
  2. Understand Betting Odds: Familiarize yourself with different types of odds, such as decimal, fractional, and moneyline. This will help you grasp potential payouts and risks.
  3. Bankroll Management: Set a budget for your betting activities and stick to it. Avoid chasing losses and only bet what you can afford to lose.
  4. Research and Analysis: Use wearable tech data as part of your research. Analyze player statistics, team performance, and historical data before placing your bets.
  5. Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest news and updates in the sports world. Injuries, team changes, and other developments can impact the outcome of a game.

Maximizing Your Betting Experience

Optimizing Your Betting Strategies

To excel in sports betting with the help of wearable tech, consider these tips:

  • Diversify Your Bets: Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Spread your bets across different games and sports to minimize risks.
  • Follow the Trends: Use the data from your wearable tech to identify trends and patterns. Adapt your betting strategies based on these insights.
  • Live Betting Opportunities: Take advantage of live betting options offered by sportsbooks. This allows you to place bets during a game, adjusting to the unfolding action.

The Future of Betting

Looking Ahead

As wearable technology continues to advance, the future of sports betting looks promising. With improved accuracy and more sophisticated features, these devices will become indispensable tools for bettors. Additionally, the integration of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) into betting apps will provide an immersive betting experience like never before.

Betting Smarter with Wearable Tech

Elevating Your Betting Game

In the dynamic world of sports betting, staying ahead of the competition is crucial. Wearable tech and fitness trackers have ushered in a new era, providing bettors with invaluable data and insights. By harnessing the power of these devices and following effective online betting strategies, you can elevate your betting game and increase your chances of success.

With the ongoing evolution of wearable technology, the future holds even more exciting possibilities for sports betting. Embrace these innovations, stay informed, and bet smarter to come out on top in this thrilling game of strategy and chance.

Unveiling the Surprising Benefits of Online Gaming for Mind and Wellness

0

Diving headfirst into the digital world of online gaming isn’t just a pastime to drool over beefed-up computers and fancy graphics. There’s a whole host of sweet perks to swiping those virtual swords or building empires with a click of the mouse. Let’s unpack why lining up for digital throwdowns can actually be a solid move for your well-being and grey matter.

Social Supercharge

Online gaming scoops a player up into a world where social connections criss-cross the globe like a massive web of ‘hello there!’ moments. Think about it – you’re in your living room, maybe in fluffy slippers, but your headset transports you into a mythical land where you battle dragons with a mate from halfway around the planet. It’s an instant international social club that doesn’t care about time zones. This constant buzz of friendly chatter and teamwork brews an ambience where your people skills can level up. It’s crucial, really, because in a time where face-to-face hangouts might be tricky, having a socially enriching outlet can shine a light on what might otherwise be a solitary day.

Thrilling Brain Gym

And let’s chat about the noggin. It turns out thumping the keyboard and mastering virtual quests does more than just tickle your excitement receptors – it keeps your thinker ticking over quite nicely. The focus required to navigate these virtual landscapes or the strategy needed to outwit an opponent can give the brain a workout similar to solving a killer Sudoku. All the snap decisions and problem-solving that gaming demands can help keep those synapses firing and making sure a mind stays as nimble as a cat burglar. Considering how valuable it is to keep the brain in prime condition, dishing out a few hours a day to maneuver through storylines and puzzles shouldn’t stir an ounce of guilt.

 Fun with Moderation

Now, like a box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, gaming is best enjoyed in moderation. There’s something to be said for parking yourself in a comfy chair and losing yourself in a game. For a few enchanted hours, you’ve got a pass to leave the real world’s hustle and hassle at the door. The beauty of it lies in moderation. Knowing when it’s time to hit save and step away prevents that virtual life from spilling over into daylight responsibilities. The art of balancing gaming with daily duties can actually dish out lessons in time management that can pay off in all areas of life. And that’s a skill worth buffing, if you catch the drift. Needless to say, online gaming holds a treasure trove of joys that go beyond mere entertainment. Not to mention the thrill that comes with the types of games that involve potential gain depending on the outcome – that’s why some refer to expert casino insights during their gaming sessions as these insights can help them navigate their gaming.

All in all, in some ways, it’s like having a mini festival at your fingertips that doubles up as a networking event and a cerebral gymnasium. Next time you load up for a session of world exploration or simulated heroics, remember that it’s not just a game – it’s a doorway to learning, connecting, and keeping sharp

European Investment Bank-backed ARCH Cold Chain Solutions launch first cold storage facility in Kenya

0

The ARCH Cold Chain Solutions Fund has launched its flagship cold storage facility in Tatu City Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Nairobi, Kenya following investment from a range of financial institutions, including the European Investment Bank (EIB), which contributed $15 million of the total funding of $81 million raised.

The facility is the first of its kind in Africa taking into consideration the flexibility of its services, the product ranges it can accommodate, and the temperature ranges on which it can operate.

During the visit for the opening by the EIB senior team, Fredd Kambo, the Managing Director and Co-Head of ARCH Cold Chain Solutions East Africa Fund remarked: ‘’Our objective is to create a meaningful impact on food safety at all stages of distribution and mitigate food loss. Our strategic expansion plan encompasses Mombasa, Kigali, Dar es Salaam, Addis Ababa and Kampala. .’’

We take pride in our noteworthy accomplishments, particularly in upholding stringent standards of quality and environmental, social and governance principles. We firmly believe that achieving the highest possible standards is imperative for our facilities. Our sincere appreciation extends to our valued investors, with a special acknowledgment of the pivotal role played by the EIB in our endeavours.’’added Kambo.

The facility consists of a state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled facility as well as a fleet of vehicles for the storage and distribution of perishable food products and pharmaceuticals.

The cold storage facility is expected to contribute to the reduction of food waste and enhance safety standards in food distribution in East Africa. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) estimates that around 37% of food produced in Sub-Saharan Africa is lost at various points along the value chain.

The flagship facility of the fund in Kenya targets five core sectors in providing cold storage and temperature-controlled solutions to potential customers in horticulture, meat, poultry, and seafood, as well as food manufacturing, supermarkets, quick-service restaurants/ hotels, and pharmaceuticals. The facility covers 17,700 square meters and can accommodate up to 18,000 pallets, equivalent to 18,000 tonnes of goods at full capacity.

The unique facility is built to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Standard, aiming for a LEED Gold Certification. This would make it the first facility with LEED Gold Certificate in Africa. It will complement up to 30% of its energy provision needs from off-grid renewable power production, mainly using solar photovoltaic, seeking to minimise climate impacts.

The facility aims to serve both export and import markets in the Eastern African region operating in perishable goods, and its logistics system has the capability to monitor and trace products from their point of origin all the way to their final destination.

IBM, NASA to deploy advanced Geospatial AI to address climate challenges in Kenya

0

IBM in collaboration with NASA, are set to apply advanced geospatial AI technologies, including IBM’s geospatial foundation model developed to climate efforts including analysis of urban heat islands in the United Arab Emirates (UAE); reforestation across Kenya; and climate resiliency in the United Kingdom (UK).

These models, which are trained on geospatial information such as satellite images, present a unique opportunity to address climate change because unlike traditional AI models tailored for specialized tasks, geospatial foundation models – encompassing satellite and weather data – create knowledge representations from petabytes and exabytes of climate-relevant data that can facilitate accelerated and streamlined discovery of environmental insights and solutions. These models can also be fine-tuned and applied across a multitude of areas driving or revealing climate change, from flood detection to fire scars.

According to Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow and Vice President, Accelerated Discovery at IBM, “AI foundation models utilizing geospatial data can be a game-changer because they allow us to better understand, prepare and address the many climate-related events effecting the health of our planet in a manner and speed never before seen. We are hopeful these technologies can help accelerate the rate at which we derive and apply solutions for a safer and healthier planet for future generations.”

Analyzing urban heat islands in the UAE

By the end of this century, many cities will likely experience disruptive and excessive heat waves if GHG emissions continue at high levels. To develop sustainable and equitable plans to keep cities habitable, the rising heat levels must be accurately mapped and addressed.

IBM and the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) are pioneering an attempt to apply foundation models to the mapping of urban heat islands – areas with significantly higher temperatures compared to surrounding locations. This innovative research specifically applies a fine-tuned version of IBM’s geospatial foundation model to understand the urban environment in Abu Dhabi and how the underlying landscape in the UAE impacts the formation of urban heat islands.

To date, the model has informed efforts that have succeeded in a reduction of heat island effects in the region by more than 3oC (5.4 F)[1]. Going forward, the model is expected to continue to provide unique insights that inform the development of urban design strategies designed to help reduce urban heat stress in changing climates.

Professor Tim Baldwin, MBZUAI Acting Provost, said: “Our collaboration with IBM marks a groundbreaking effort to utilize foundational AI models in analyzing and identifying solutions to urban heat islands for Abu Dhabi and parts of the UAE, a region which is particularly affected by climate change. This research underscores the vital role of AI in tackling global issues, emphasizing the urgency of continued exploration and innovation. By harnessing the power of AI, we are not merely addressing challenges; we are proactively shaping solutions for a sustainable future. In a world confronted by unprecedented challenges, MBZUAI stands at the forefront of pioneering research in AI, recognizing the transformative power it holds.”

Advancing reforestation and water sustainability in Kenya

In December 2022, President of Kenya H.E. D.R William Ruto unveiled the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign designed to plant 15 billion trees across Kenya by 2032, including in areas of critically affected water towers – forested landscapes that retain water and source many rivers throughout Kenya. While water towers account for about three quarters of the nation’s water resources, deforestation is contributing to increasing water scarcity in these regions.

IBM and the Kenyan government’s office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change Ali Mohamed have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign through a new “adopt-a-water-tower” initiative. The effort will be fueled by a new digital platform that leverages IBM’s geospatial foundation model to enable users to track and visualize tree planting and tree growing activities in specific water tower areas. Local developers can also create fine-tuned models combining the IBM geospatial model with their own localized information to monitor forest restoration and measure above-ground biomass such as sequestered carbon, ultimately mobilizing on-the-ground efforts to plant more trees across Kenya’s water tower regions.

The President’s Spokesperson, Mr. Hussein Mohamed, MBS, said: “We recognize that technology plays a pivotal role in unlocking our full potential, optimizing resource utilization, and seizing opportunities. It serves as a means to ensure that we harness our resources most effectively to drive our grassroots-driven economic transformation agenda. Through our partnership with IBM, we have the capability of harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and geospatial data to advance our climate ambitions. These ambitions include planting 15 billion trees, rejuvenating our vital water towers, fostering increased collaboration with the private sector to promote a just energy transition for communities around our forests. Simultaneously, this collaboration will enhance our capacity to equitably participate in the carbon economy. The potential of this collaboration extends beyond our borders and has the capacity to be replicated in other nations seeking to enhance their forest cover while also improving the economic and health well-being of their communities.”

Elevating climate resiliency across the United Kingdom

In 2021, IBM and the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Hartree Centre collaborated to explore the application of next-generation technologies including AI from IBM to address climate risk and resiliency across the UK.

Now, IBM, STFC and Royal HaskoningDHV, a global consulting engineering company, have collaborated to establish a new service, leveraging IBM’s geospatial AI tools, that seeks to automate and scale climate risk assessment processes for organizations. The service’s first use case will focus on the aviation sector, in which IBM’s geospatial AI will assess impacts weather-related issues, including:

  • Short-term impact of extreme weather on aviation operations.
  • Long-term impact of climate change on future airport operations and infrastructure.

In addition, IBM and STFC Hartree Centre, through the Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation, are advancing a new area of research with Dark Matter Labs and Lucidminds, as part of their TreesAI project. The research project will apply IBM geospatial AI technologies to their Green Urban Scenarios (GUS) model to map urban locations where trees can be planted to help alleviate the risk of surface water flooding. The effort will eventually inform an end-to-end digital planning platform for urban planners, project developers and green urban investors across the UK.

Chloe Treger, TreesAI UK Lead, said: “Over 300,000 properties are at risk of surface-water flooding. Without action, this figure is set to almost double by 2055 due to climate change and urbanisation. Through our collaboration with IBM and STFC, we have been able to observe how trees contribute to reducing surface water flooding risks across the city under different scenarios, using GUS. This has enabled us and our partners to make the business case for tree planting and maintenance. After a successful pilot in Glasgow, we are now looking for further locations to embed this powerful data-enabled decision-making tool.”

Extending NASA collaboration to apply generative AI to weather

Beyond their initial commitment to build and deploy a geospatial foundation model, IBM and NASA have also announced work on a new, separate AI foundation model for weather and climate. By applying AI technology from IBM, the model aims to improve the accuracy, speed and affordability of weather forecasting and other climate applications. Sample applications of the model not only include forecasting, but also super-resolution downscaling, identifying conditions conducive to wildfires, and predicting meteorological phenomena. IBM researchers will work alongside NASA domain experts to train and validate the model.

IBM at COP28

These latest efforts and IBM’s role at COP28 builds on the company’s long history of action, research, and advocacy around the environment. IBM issued its first environmental policy more than 50 years ago, in 1971, and published a formal position on climate change in 2007. IBM is also a founding member of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment and the Climate Leadership Council, and supports communities vulnerable to climate change and other environmental issues through initiatives like the IBM Sustainability Accelerator

The new fund vehicle represents the company’s commitment to identifying and investing in the most promising pre-seed startups shaping the future of climate, energy, agriculture and mobility. With the fund, the company will seek to foster very-early-stage enterprise development and innovation with solutions that enable an income uplift for all the participants along the journey.

As stated by Taiwo Kamson, Principal at EchoVC, “Our Eco Pilot Fund I is not just any fund but a strategic first step initiative designed to address the funding gap in specific impact focused sectors and the respective value chains. We believe that by focusing on these areas, we can make a lasting impact on the growth and development of innovative solutions around agriculture, climate, and energy.”

In keeping with the company’s mission to close the funding gap for underrepresented founders and startups targeting underserved markets, they invested in sector-sensitive companies targeting climate, agriculture, energy and transportation over the last 6 years. Backing incredible founders such as Sara Menker at Gro Holdings, Bim Adisa at Beacon Power Services, Dami Olokesusi at Shuttlers.NG, Desmond Koney at Complete Farmer and June Odongo at Senga, we got a first row look into the journey of these mission-fuelled founders.

Despite marked interest in harnessing the business potential on the African continent, the distribution of funding to entrepreneurs remains uneven. A sample taken from venture financing deals occurring in Africa between 2017-2021 showed that [Black] Africans accounted for 28% of CEOs and 31% of executive teams of the startups winning financing deals. For the subset of energy, mobility, and agriculture-related firms, the equivalent distribution is 21% of CEOs and 36% of executive teams. That is why as an emerging solution, this Eco Pilot Fund I is targeted at African companies and African founders in Sub Saharan Africa.

“Africa’s golden age of entrepreneurship, job creation and household lift will demand that mission-driven founders be backed by high-risk capital. Africa’s needs, while diverse, will not be solved only by investments in fintech,” said Eghosa Omoigui, Managing Partner, EchoVC.

“The objective of our eco pilot fund will be to back founders with first institutional checks and assist them in syndicating financing rounds to support their mission. As a pilot fund, we want to sponsor a pipeline of high quality founders that create high quality companies that can be supported later by the increasing number of climate and energy focused funds. We anticipate that our learnings from this vehicle will feed into our investments to be made from our larger 2024 Eco Fund,” Eghosa Omoigui stated.

The Eco Pilot Fund I will be focused on making up to ten pre-seed investments in founders and startups that span on specific areas of interest, such as companies led by Africans in Sub Saharan Africa including a specific focus on companies in Nigeria and Kenya delivering the following solutions: Access to resources – New technologies focusing on energy provision or use for agriculture (energy for agriculture).

Access to finance and insurance – Support intermediaries that can use digital technologies to unlock finance for farmers and mitigate their risks. Knowledge/Capacity Building – Focus on low-cost solutions to provide better market information and training for farming practices. Access to markets  Creating value chains connecting small holder farmers to larger supply chains thus increasing value to farmers.

Other areas of interest include, but not limited to, innovations in energy storage, cooling, and off-grid cooking, smart energy systems and mini-grids, affordable and reliable access to renewable energy, and new approaches to urban transportation including alt-powered two and three wheelers.

Softbank-backed health tech Proximie launches  its first Software Development Kit

Proximie , a global health technology platform focused on digitizing operating and diagnostic rooms has launched its first Software Development Kit (“SDK”) – a blueprint for the first operating system within an OR.

With Proximie’s SDK, valuable surgical data can be captured into how devices perform while being used in real-world surgeries. This will speed up the innovation and global development of medical technology systems in the OR – thus improving patient safety and making surgery even more productive.

Dr. Nadine Hachach-Haram, Founder and CEO of Proximie, said:“This is a milestone in enabling the digitization of operating rooms worldwide. With our new SDK, Proximie has launched a blueprint for the accelerated innovation, globally, of medical technology systems. This helps developers create, test, launch and monitor platforms quicker and more comprehensively than ever before – and surgeons to deliver care more effectively than ever before.

“Demand for advanced medical devices and robotics will only continue to grow, given the potential for these systems to improve surgical productivity and patient safety.”

All data captured by the SDK is hosted on Proximie’s cloud-based, secure content library, providing developers with an easy-to-use depository of information. The SDK enhances Proximie’s suite of services including its hardware-only and hybrid (hardware and software) approaches enabled via usage of Proximie’s PxKit – wireless cameras affording multiple views of surgical procedures.

The SDK is being launched at Slush by Proximie’s Founder and CEO, Dr. Nadine Hachach-Haram and Richard Carter, VP of Engineering at Proximie. Dr. Hachach-Haram will demonstrate the SDK’s capabilities via a unique, ‘PxMoggy’ robot, developed by Proximie solely for the event.

Proximie has established partnerships with various medical device and robotics developers. In 2022, the Company’s collaboration with Teladoc led to a fully-integrated robot enabling authorised remote participants to reposition cameras and screens – eliciting improved views of surgery without troubling present clinical staff.

The same technology is used to make the PxMoggy robot cat walk, thus supporting live video feeds / device control on the most constrained electronic platforms such as biometric sensors, and even within single use electronics such as endoscope tubes.

Since its launch, the company has been deployed in 800 hospitals across 50 countries, contracts with over 40 major medical device companies (NYSE-listed Teladoc, Tenet, etc.), and access to 90% of operating rooms / diagnostic suites in the UK, US, and EU; In June 2022 the company raised  $80 million Series C fund raise – backed by Advent Life Sciences and SoftBank Vision Fund 2.

This guide by RevvLab, a leading copywriting services provider, will help you navigate the key factors to consider, ensuring you make an informed decision that aligns with your business objectives.

The Importance of Words in Business

In the dynamic world of business, words wield an extraordinary power. They are not just mere tools of communication; they are the essence that shapes perceptions, influences decisions, and drives actions. Understanding the critical role of words in business communication is paramount for any successful enterprise.

Consider the impact of carefully chosen words in your business interactions. They can build bridges, forge connections, and open doors to new opportunities. Whether it’s the persuasive copy of a marketing campaign, the reassuring tone of customer service, or the clear and concise language of a business proposal, the right words have the power to resonate deeply with your audience.

What is Professional Copywriting?

Professional copywriting is the art and science of strategically delivering words, whether written or spoken, that get people to take some form of action. Imagine this: a website needs compelling text that gives users an idea of its brand and services. What’s the best way to present that information? Expert copywriting is a skill that blends marketing and persuasive writing aspects to produce messages that effectively reach target audiences.

What makes a professional copywriter stand out? Here are some key skills and expertise they bring to the table:

Audience Needs

Skilled copywriters are well-versed in the demands, problems, and preferences of their target audience. They have the ability to develop messages that appeal to the audience personally and make each word have a personal resonance.

Marketing Savvy

They are more than simply wordsmiths; they know how to match their writing to the marketing plan and grasp the fundamentals of marketing. This means creating content that not only sounds good but also drives the desired business outcomes.

Research Skills

Effective copywriting is often grounded in thorough research. This could be about the product, the competition, market trends, or customer feedback. Professional copywriters know how to dig deep to find the insights that inform persuasive writing.

SEO Knowledge

In the digital age, being able to write for search engines is crucial. Professional copywriters know how to balance the art of writing with the science of SEO, ensuring content is not only engaging but also discoverable online.

Adaptability

Different projects require different voices and styles. A professional copywriter can switch between tones and styles, from formal business proposals to casual blog posts, ensuring the tone always matches the intended audience and purpose.

Storytelling

Today’s copywriting often involves storytelling, a powerful tool to create an emotional connection with the audience. Professional copywriters know how to weave narratives that make the audience relate to the message on a deeper level.

Professional copywriters are not just writing text; they are creating an experience, a connection, and a pathway to action through the power of words. Their skills and expertise are pivotal in crafting messages that not only inform and engage but also drive the audience toward a desired action or outcome.

The Impact of Professional Copywriting on Business

Professional copywriting can be a game-changer for businesses, transforming their messaging from ordinary to extraordinary. It’s like giving your brand a voice that’s not just heard but also felt and remembered. Let’s delve into how this transformation happens and look at tangible examples of its impact.

1. Enhancing Brand Image: Professional copywriting helps in crafting a consistent and compelling brand voice. This consistency across all platforms – be it your website, social media, or advertising – strengthens your brand image, making it more recognizable and trustworthy to your audience.

2. Improving Engagement: A well-crafted copy engages the reader from the first word to the last. For instance, consider an email marketing campaign. A copywriter knows how to create subject lines that stand out in an overcrowded inbox and content that keeps the reader hooked, significantly increasing open rates and engagement.

3. Boosting Conversion Rates: Effective copywriting is persuasive. It guides the reader through a journey, addressing their needs and highlighting benefits, leading to increased conversion rates. A great example is website copy. A professional copywriter can turn a static webpage into a dynamic sales tool, compelling visitors to take action, be it making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or downloading a whitepaper.

4. Enhancing SEO and Online Visibility: In the digital age, visibility is key. Professional copywriters often incorporate SEO strategies into their writing, helping content rank higher in search engine results. This increased visibility leads to more traffic, and consequently, more opportunities for conversion and sales.

5. Building Customer Trust and Loyalty: Effective copywriting does more than sell; it informs, educates, and sometimes entertains. This value-added approach can build trust and loyalty among customers. For instance, a blog that consistently provides valuable and relevant information establishes a brand as an authority in its field, fostering a sense of trust among its readers.

6. Examples of Impact:

  • An e-commerce site’s sales increased by 30% and its organic traffic increased by 50% after a professional copywriter revamped the content of the website.
  • Sales increased significantly as a result of a targeted email campaign with well-written material that had a 25% higher open rate and a 40% higher click-through rate.
  • A social media campaign with engaging and well-written content increased a brand’s followers by 20% in just three months, enhancing brand awareness and market reach.

Copywriting Across Different Platforms

Navigating the world of copywriting requires a chameleon-like ability to adapt to various platforms, each with its unique demands and audience expectations. Let’s explore how copywriting strategies differ for websites, social media, email marketing, and print media, and provide tips for tailoring content accordingly.

1. Websites

  • Focus: Clarity, engagement, and conversion.
  • Strategy: Website copy needs to be clear, concise, and directed towards guiding visitors to take a desired action, like making a purchase or signing up.
  • Tips: Use a clear structure with headlines, subheadings, and bullet points for easy navigation. SEO is crucial here, so include relevant keywords naturally.

2. Social Media:

  • Focus: Engagement, brand personality, and community building.
  • Strategy: Social media copy should be conversational, relatable, and engaging. It’s about showing the brand’s personality and connecting with the audience on a personal level.
  • Tips: Keep it short and sweet. Use compelling visuals and include calls to action like ‘Share your thoughts’ or ‘Tag a friend’. Timeliness and trending topics can greatly enhance engagement.

3. Email Marketing:

  • Focus: Personalization and conversion.
  • Strategy: Email copy should feel personal and tailored to the reader. It’s about creating a sense of one-on-one conversation.
  • Tips: Use the recipient’s name and segment your email list to provide more relevant content. The subject line is crucial – make it catchy and compelling to increase open rates.

Choosing the Right Copywriting Service

Selecting the right copywriting service is crucial for your business’s communication and marketing success. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed decision:

Para tornar o processo de pesquisa o mais fácil possível, decidimos preparar uma lista de factores a que deve prestar especial atenção ao escolher uma plataforma para jogar Aviator:

  • Fiabilidade. Este é o fator mais importante na escolha de uma plataforma de casino online. Se escolher uma plataforma não fiável, os seus dados pessoais podem estar em risco. Preste atenção à presença de uma licença de casino. Procure opiniões de utilizadores reais em vários sites online e, com base na informação obtida, poderá compreender melhor a situação;

Africa’s commodities platform AFEX launches digital platform for trading commodities

0

Africa’s commodities player, AFEX, has launched a new digital platform dubbed Africa Exchange, aimed at trading commodities.

African Exchange platform  follows AFEX’s first foray into digital commodities trading with the launch of ComX in 20 .It further transforms the commodities space in Africa by enabling commodities market players to meet and interact both in the physical and financial markets. Data and information crucial to decision-making are readily available on the platform, offering a comprehensive and informed trading experience.

Commenting on the launch, Akinyinka Akintunde, CEO and President of AFEX Nigeria, said: “As a team, we are excited and proud to launch Africa Exchange as another step in building the digital infrastructure to facilitate trade across Africa. With this launch, our goal is to boost the commodities market in Africa and allow more investors to participate with all the information that they need at their fingertips”.

Africa Exchange provides a structured marketplace duly regulated by Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), ensuring that users can participate in various trade or investment opportunities.

Africa Exchange will replace ComX, which has served over 80,000 investors in Nigeria and facilitated trades worth over USD 200 million since it was launched in 2020. The transition further bolsters AFEX’s mission of facilitating wealth creation for a new generation of Africans by providing them with alternative investment options to enrich their existing portfolios. Additionally, AFEX aims to enhance intra-African trade by strengthening commodities trading within Africa and supporting the African Continental Free Trade Agreement’s (AFCFTA) mission to improve regional trade integration to boost economic development and food security across the continent.

Akinyinka added, “Commodities have been high-performing assets in recent years; in 2021, commodities were the third highest performing asset class, averaging about 37.1% in returns, while stocks averaged about 36.9%. The commodities market has grown in sophistication over the years with the likes of commodity brokers and other institutional players making their mark and creating opportunities for trading. With Africa Exchange, we are opening the African commodities ecosystem to more investors and players. Through the platform, users can directly trade physical commodities or invest in commodity-backed financial instruments.”

Alongside the platform launch, AFEX is also reintroducing its innovative Fair Trade ETC (FETC) product. The FETC is a commodity bundle in one contract designed to provide investors with exposure to the market in a way that maximizes the risk-return balance of the underlying commodities. The instrument has a maturity period of 270 days and historically significant returns, with both tranches in 2022 returning 31% and 20%, respectively. The FETC is set to open on the Africa Exchange platform on the 1st of December at a unit price of just N1000, and for the first time in the product’s history, it will be tradeable within the tenor period, after a 120-day hold.

Funto Olasemo, Vice President, Financial Markets at AFEX, said, ‘For the last 8 months, we have been focused on improving our core infrastructure and delivering a better digital interface for commodities trading and investment on the continent. We have continued to also pursue product innovation, and the new tranche of our FETC product is a great example of that.”

“The FETC has been a hugely successful product since we introduced it in 2020, and we have structured a tradeable component into this tranche, giving investors even more freedom as they build wealth. The team is excited that we are facilitating wealth creation for a new generation of Africans by providing them with alternative investment options to enrich their portfolios.”

AFEX is committed to improving intra-African trade. To achieve this goal, the company has been bullish in pursuing its strategic Pan-African expansion plan since expanding into Kenya and Uganda in 2021 and 2022. AFEX is set to expand to six other African countries within the next few years with the aim of promoting efficient trade in commodities across the continent while supporting the objectives of the AFCFTA to boost regional trade integration.

GoMetro, a South African tech company has secured a £9 million Series A funding round led by Zenobē, with participation from FutureGrowth Asset Managers.

The investment is aimed to support GoMetro’s mission to digitise heavy-duty commercial transport operations and further develop its state-of-the-art fleet management platform in its key markets of the United Kingdom, EU, USA and South Africa.

GoMetro founder, Justin Coetzee. “Embracing data-driven decision-making systems that empower operators to better manage fleet utilisation, optimise resources, reduce risk and enhance customer satisfaction can be a real competitive edge that catapults transport companies beyond the reach of their competitors,”

GoMetro’s flagship product, Bridge, is a platform that consolidates vehicle data into a unified system. With GoMetro Bridge, users gain access to a wide range of telematics-driven features specifically designed to support their transition to all-electric fleets – using their own telematics data to provide an assessment of the fit to expected EV adoption scenarios for a fleet owner.

GoMetro aims to use this funding to strengthen its software platform to provide fleet operators with even more robust tools for managing and optimising all-electric fleets. This includes refining existing features and introducing new functionalities that align with the evolving needs of the industry, as well as expanding the number of devices supported on GoMetro Bridge.

Zenobē Energy, an EV fleet and grid-scale battery storage specialist headquartered in the UK, brings a wealth of experience and strategic value to this investment. With a global footprint, Zenobē currently supports over 1,000 electric buses, trucks, and commercial vehicles. The company is committed to supporting 4,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2026.

The Electric Transport-as-a-Service (ETaaS) solution, offered by Zenobē, encompasses on-board battery replacement, charging infrastructure, and a sophisticated software platform for energy optimisation.

“This Series A funding is a pivotal moment for GoMetro, and we are thrilled to have Zenobē and FutureGrowth as our lead investors in our round,” says Coetzee. “Getting the chance to apply our technology to the biggest single electric bus fleet in the United Kingdom will accelerate our research and development into supporting EV buses and trucks on GoMetro Bridge. Data-driven fleet management and telematics is entering a new golden age with EV adoption – and there is a massive opportunity in this key watershed moment in an industry transition.”

“GoMetro’s customer and data-driven approach to fleet management aligns seamlessly with our vision for the future of sustainable transportation. We are excited to support their growth into new markets as well as to provide the capital to accelerate their product development,” says Steven Meersman, Founder Director at Zenobē.

“Our investment in GoMetro aligns perfectly with FutureGrowth’s vision of fostering sustainable and technologically advanced solutions in the transport sector. We are excited to be part of GoMetro’s journey, and we look forward to the positive impacts this will bring to the industry and the environment,” comments Amrish Narrandes, Head of Private Equity and Venture Capital at FutureGrowth.

In addition to using the Series A funding to help it solidify its operations in the UK, EU and South Africa, GoMetro is further focused on expansion to the US, Latin America and Australia in the next 12 months. This includes establishing partnerships and collaborations with businesses, governments, and organisations committed to sustainable transportation solutions. As governments worldwide intensify their focus on reducing carbon emissions, the collaborative efforts between GoMetro and Zenobē aim to tackle the challenges of decarbonising road transport.
