Bluewave Insurance partners with MNOs to distribute affordable micro-insurance products, announces expansion plans

0

Bluewave Insurance Agency is gearing up for a strategic relaunch and regional expansion in Africa after signing a partnership deal with several mobile network operators to distribute affordable insurance products across the continent.

Bluewave’s robust microinsurance digital system offers low-income users easy access to an array of insurance products while leveraging mobile technology to cut down overheads and operational costs. This further significantly reduces the insurance premiums compared to what traditional companies charge for motor, health and life covers.

Speaking about its expansion plans, Adelaide Odhiambo, Founder, and Group CEO, of Bluewave Insurance Agency said, “We have been refining our processes, products, and partnerships, we’re thrilled to announce our renewed focus on introducing our solutions in Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malawi, DRC, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Zambia.”

To increase insurance penetration in Africa’s markets characterised by low uptake, the company has partnered with large aggregators specifically Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and banks to distribute affordable micro-insurance products.

In Kenya and Uganda, Bluewave has already created insurance products that are embedded in the services millions of people already use—like M-Pesa and Airtel Money.

Recently the company spearheaded a tripartite partnership between, Airtel Money Uganda, and AAR, to launch a micro-health project that has garnered more than 100,000 enrolments in less than one month.

“Africa has an ever-growing need for affordable insurance solutions. When we launched Ddwaliro Care, a low-cost comprehensive health insurance cover designed for individuals and large families, we saw a significant uptake in customer enrollments in just a few weeks. This is proof of the market’s readiness to take up insurance designed with them in mind,” explained Adelaide.

To help it grow, Bluewave has accelerated its efforts to attract new policyholders from its database by launching an aggressive on the ground campaign. Based on its experience selling insurance over the years, management anticipates that this strategy will be essential in helping sustain the business into future growth periods.

“We’ve put careful thought into what lies ahead. To achieve this, We’re seeking to raise a prudent investment amounting to USD 6 million over the next three years—an amount that will allow us to take advantage of the burgeoning microinsurance demand in the market” added Adelaide.

The Task Ahead

Insurance penetration in Africa is still very low and approximated to be less than 3% of the continental GDP, this presents a huge opportunity for growth by availing well-researched products that meet the needs of the African population

Over the next 5 years, Bluewave intends to grow its customer base by making profitable investments in consumer education. “Educating customers about our products has always been a key part of our business strategy,” added Adelaide

On the data protection front, the company remains committed to upholding data privacy and protecting clients’ insurance data as a top priority. As it grows, Bluewave continues to explore how blockchain and AI technology can be incorporated into its software, to make it easier for clients to use the system while still maintaining their information private.

In conclusion, Adelaide expressed excitement about the expansion plans for 2024, highlighting that with the right focus and determination, overcoming challenges leads to achievements beyond imagination.

UAE’s Omniful raises $5.85 million Seed for MENA expansion

0

Omniful, a cloud-based supply chain and e-commerce enablement platform focused on hyperlocal and omnichannel commerce, has raised $5.85 million for its seed round to strengthen its position in existing markets, launch sales and marketing activities in new countries in the region, and double down on its technology development.

Led by VentureSouq with participation from 500 Global, DASH Ventures, Jahez Group, SEEDRA Ventures, Bunat Ventures, Hala Ventures, and RZM Investments, the round also saw the participation of family offices including Al Rasheed, Siraj Holding, Al Bawardi, Al Nafea, and a number of strategic angel investors from the GCC joined the company’s seed round.

Founded in 2021 by Mostafa Abolnasr and Alankrit Nishad, Omniful provides merchants and 3rd party logistics (3PL) fulfilment providers with a unified next generation order management system (OMS), warehouse management system (WMS) and transport management system (TMS) to build, grow, and scale their businesses. Omniful ensures real-time inventory management across a diverse range of integrated sales channels, both digital and physical. In streamlining the entire supply chain journey, Omniful customers are able to manage inventory flow irrespective of where orders originate from, to create superior experiences for end-consumers.

“The future of commerce is hyperlocal and omnichannel, with consumers expecting brands to be closer to them, to deliver faster and offer a personalised experience. At Omniful, we are equipping merchants in this $4+ trillion industry, with a single platform to manage all of their sales channels, deliver on-time and in-full, improving their efficiencies by 40% and their customer retention by 15%. Our seed round marks a major milestone, and together with our investors, we are excited about going out of stealth and launching our sales and marketing efforts in MEA and India, followed by Europe and USA,” said Mostafa Abolnasr, co-founder & CEO.

Merchants today have to deal with multiple online sales channels, points of sales, brands, warehouses, suppliers, fulfilment hubs, manual processes, and delivery partners. The use of different software and tools leads to an unnecessary increase in inefficiencies and significant increase in operational costs. In the MENA region, at least 30% of all orders face fulfilment delays, leading to more than 8% revenue loss, which has become an acceptable scenario for most merchants. In the past 12 months, Omniful customers that fully utilise Omniful’s Order Management and Fulfilment System have seen a 35% increase in monthly revenue (YoY) on average, with more than 96% of orders shipped on-time and in-full.

Built in the cloud, Omniful’s plug-and-play platform can be completely tailored, not through customization, but via dynamic configurations. Whether consumers choose on-demand delivery, “buy online, pickup in-store” (BOPIS), scan-and-go or other modes of shopping, the integration with all sales channels means Omniful clients can accurately pick and pack these orders and deliver them on time.

Omniful’s merchants can deliver in extremely short time periods (less than 60 minutes) from retail stores, with 95%+ inventory accuracy, and 96% on-time in-full metrics. Its API-first approach allows for seamless integration with global and local e-commerce platforms, marketplaces, ERP, POS, or shipping tech stacks. This creates unparalleled efficiencies for omnichannel brands that want to deliver a world-class experience to their end consumers.

“80% of our team are engineers. As a product-led organization, our technology is a clear differentiator, making us the platform of choice for omnichannel merchants and high-volume 3PL fulfilment providers. Over the next year, we will double down on growing our technology capabilities in India, while also planning for the launch of our platform there,” said Alankrit Nishad, co-founder & Chief Technology Officer.

Since its launch, Omniful has attracted leading omnichannel brands including 3 of the top 10 retailers in Saudi Arabia (Panda, Spar and Sadhan), as well as Catrion (Saudi Airlines Catering Company) and other leading brands from across the region.  Omniful is already working with the largest 3PL ecommerce fulfilment Providers in the MENA region including, Ollkom, Safe Choice, UWC, Stogo, and others.

With Omniful’s integrated products including OMS, TMS, and WMS, customers can manage multiple brands within the same account, unlocking significant opportunities for 3PL fulfilment providers serving e-commerce merchants. Through just one platform, clients can manage sellers, orders, warehousing, shipping, catalogues, inventory updates and more.

“We see Omniful as having uniquely far-reaching applications, giving it lots of space to run. Here in MENA, the concept of trading is embedded in our history. This region has an established tradition of great retail franchises, which Omniful can help to enhance, making them more competitive in an increasingly dynamic environment. Omniful is universal, adaptable and global, having already found use cases across multiple large markets. We genuinely see Omniful as a borderless solution that can become essential to any domestic business and also play a role in unifying processes for cross-border operations,” said Tammer Qaddumi, General Partner at VentureSouq.

Omniful is co-headquartered in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, with a Research and Development Hub in India. The company currently employs over 50 people from six countries. To know more, visit www.omniful.com.

Winnie Kimathi’s take on the 10th Angel Fair Africa

0

I like to think that I’m quite an ambitious person, maybe to a fault because I take on new challenges a bit too much, sometimes to my suffering 🙂 haha… it feels like sweet pain to me, apparently this gives me pleasure, a kick and drive…try me 🙂

A couple of months ago, I found out that Eric Osiakwan of Chanzo Capital was planning Angel Fair Africa through our mutual friend. This was the 10-year anniversary, dubbed #AFA@10, and it was to happen in South Africa. I read up on it and two things came to mind. 1) I instantly knew that I wanted to be a part of Angel Fair Africa and 2) it was the kind of a new experience and inspiration that I was looking for!

I knew Eric before as we’re both shareholders in one of Africa’s pioneering & leading TravelTech companies – HotelOnline. I joined HotelOnline through the acquisition of Cloud9 Experiences – a B2C traveltech platform. Eric was already a major shareholder in HotelOnline at this point. We’d met once briefly while he was visiting the office and I’d overseen planning of his travels while he was in Kenya.

Fast forward to July this year after I’d read about Angel Fair Africa, I reached out to Eric after not having been in touch in over 2 years. I wasn’t sure if he still had my number or would remember me. I sent him a message while in doubt thinking – this might come off weird — he probably won’t remember me… I mean.. the guts on me … but there was nothing to lose. I felt that I wanted to reconnect with an investor I admired, I needed mentorship in the area of venture capital and investment, which I’ve been eyeing and he’s generally someone who’s great to have in your corner. Fun individual too – as versatile as can be. So, I sent him the message and prepared not to get a response. But it didn’t take him long, a couple of hours later I heard back from Eric. Yes, he remembered me, and he was happy to catch up and explore what we could do together. Imagine if I had let the small person’s doubts get in the way.

Winnie Kimathi of Angel Fair Africa and Mark Kleyner of Dream VC

It’s been a great couple of months working towards #AFA@10. We started with a briefing breakfast meeting and things-built momentum pretty fast. I’ve been honored to lead the event organizing, I was the program manager for this year’s start up cohort and supported in investor relations as well. This was the most exciting and impactful role.

In my previous experience as a startup founder, I went through a merger too early in my career /business journey, when we merged my first business – Heartbeat Adventures with Cloud9 Experiences and went through an acquisition a little over a year later and exited to HotelOnline.

The gruesome journey that is building a business from scratch, growing it to a level that other people want to buy it, is no easy fit. I had to learn and grow in a very short time. We were as agile as can be, built and tested beautiful products and pivoted in pursuit of a Product-Market Fit. I left with valuable business acumen, management skills and with an interest in venture capital, investments and growing & scaling businesses.

This is why I felt a strong desire to partner with Eric Osiakwan to make Angel Fair Africa a success and have it as a learning ground. Angel Fair Africa is a Chanzo Capital event that brings together selected African entrepreneurs and curated investors to facilitate deal making – investing in promising African Startups.

Some of the founders hanging out with VCs

For the last couple of months, I’ve interacted with and known amazing founders in the AFA@10 cohort from all over Africa. We had founders from eight countries – Nigeria, Ghana, CoteD’Ivore, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda and of course South Africa. We’ve helped some of these startups reposition themselves for growth, exciting new business opportunities for some and helped facilitate investor conversations and deals.

While the event was initially to be held in East London, we hit a wall in early November when we got into logistical challenges and couldn’t host the event in East London. In the face of making a tough call, Eric couldn’t choose to cancel the event completely. He instead decided to move the event venue to the mother city – Cape Town! Sometimes we don’t realize it in the moment, but some things are a blessing in disguise. Having the event in Cape Town was the best idea ever! We had the pleasure of working in the most beautiful city in Africa, in my opinion – Cape Town! This happened to be my first time in Cape Town, and I can’t tell you how mind blown it has been. My phone’s memory is full coz – c’mon- as a lover of nature and beauty, everywhere I look there’s a beautiful, picturesque view of a mountain in the backdrop, the ocean or just beautiful colonial buildings in clean and orderly streets. This city has given me hope that our African cities can get as organized and easy to live in (story for another day). We walked to meetings when possible because the Central Business District (CBD) area is so walkable, clean, conducive and not as hectic to stroll around as many African cities that I won’t mention names…😁.

Unsurprisingly, this time of the year is the best to be in Cape Town – it’s summer; great weather, a lot of tech events and investor summits were happening around the same time and the city was flocking with investors from all over the world, startups and ecosystem builders. We had a cocktail mixer event to attend almost every night. We met and interacted with amazing people that’d be hard to catch any other time – including attending the sendoff party for Andrea Bohmert – outgoing managing partner of Knife capital at Innovation City, the tech safari mixer at Stitch, a dinner with Medica team and Innovation city’s second year anniversary among others.

AFA@10 was in two parts – an entrepreneur bootcamp that happened between the 27th & 28th November 2023 at WomHub. We had our startups pitch without slides (they were taken aback by this), we had amazing conversations from experienced founders and investors and great sessions from covetable VCs. Topping the list was a session by Zacharia George of Launch Africa Ventures – an investor I’ve followed and admired from a distance, as well as Mark Kleyner of Dream VC.

The main event happened on 29th & 30th November 2023 at the Fountains Hotel. The main event had investor panels, startups pitch sessions, and conversations with experienced founders. We had an all-female investor panel featuring Andrea Bohmert of Knife Capital, Hanna Subayi of Launch Africa Ventures, Audrey Verhaeghe of Anza Capital and moderated by Justin James of Fireball Capital. Other impeccable investor panels were with Keet Van Zyl – Managing partner of Knife Capital, Mia Von Koschitzky – Managing Partner at Future Africa, Idris Bello – Managing Partner at LoftyInc Capital, Sewu-Steve Tawia of Jaza Rift Ventures, Ian Lessem – Managing Partner at Havaic and Emmanuel Adegboye – Head of Medica. We had amazing keynotes from Esther Dyson of Wellville and Jason Njoku of Iroko Partners. We were honored by the knowledge and gems shared by these impactful industry leaders in investing and entrepreneurship.

Second day Investors Panel

Two small businesses touched my heart. They were not prepared for an event like this, and had not foreseen the opportunities awaiting them at AFA@10 – one was a water bottling and refilling venture who distills and sells refillable water, another manufactures and distributes premixed cocktails. They were greatly impacted by the opportunities that AFA@10 presented. Above that, we had fintechs, edtechs, logistics and supply chain, manufacturing and other startups pitch at AFA@10 and the outcomes from the event are profound. We are grateful to all the investors, panelists and speakers who joined and made AFA@10 great, as well as those who influenced from a distance.

My gratitude to friends and colleagues who supported us greatly – Rowena Luk of Africa Health Ventures, Mellisa Desmore from University of Cape Town (UCT), Luri Fumane of BoxPlexus, Sly Khumalo who was the event MC, all based in Cape Town, Kell Barkorkor from Ghana and the multi-talented super human – Pilot Joel Mureithi from Kenya who brought our dreams to life with such beautiful artwork for all our event materials and relentless support. We couldn’t do it without you colleagues. We are forever indebted. Thank you.

Group photo with the entrepreneurs

I wouldn’t end without giving Eric Osiakwan his flowers. Eric is a natural leader who knows how to make people around him comfortable, inspire the best out of them and help people rise to their greatness. He did the same with me. More than that, I’ve been amazed by his resilience, hard work and vision into making AFA possible. The lengths he goes in making sure the portfolio companies in his care are advancing in the best light with no bounds. This is obviously the first of many endeavors we’ll do together, and I stand to benefit from his wealth of knowledge, valuable connections and zeal for life! Thank you, Eric.  As we close the year, I look forward to what 2024 presents and the endeavors we’ll undertake. What do they say…the world is just but our oyster! 😀

Malta’s attraction for digital nomads

0

Businesses globally are acknowledging the fact that remote working has become rapidly mainstream. And with many companies reaping the fruits of increased productivity, talent retention and decreased utility costs, more and more organisations are incorporating remote working arrangements into standard employee conditions of work.

Those adventurous remote workers who are ready to take to plunge and ditch their home office to work from anywhere will find many countries around the world offering digital nomad visas.

Malta was among the first countries in Europe to adapt to this shift in trends. Following a significant influx of remote workers from fellow EU countries, the Nomad Residence Permit extends this possibility to non-EU nationals to live in Malta for a temporary extended period while working remotely.

Successful take-up

Close to one thousand applications from non-EU digital nomads have been submitted to Residency Malta, the government agency that administers and manages the Programme, since its launch in June 2021.

The majority of beneficiaries hail from the UK,  the US and China, and span a variety of industries from IT, finance and business management to marketing and education. With these nomads having an average age of 37, tertiary education and a median annual salary of €74,000, Malta is attracting a new base of talented and skilled professionals who, while keeping their employment, are able to move and explore the country’s rich history and heritage, experience the melting pot of different cultures, while enjoying Island life in the heart of the Mediterranean.

A significant number of nomads have applied with their families and have also asked for renewals – a strong testimony that they are finding living in and working from Malta comfortable and convenient.

Indeed, Malta offers a number of unique propositions for remote workers. English is an official language and the language for doing business, meaning expats will have no issues communicating and settling in fast. Then there’s a strong fibre broadband infrastructure, over 400 free public wifi hotspots, and 5G nationwide to remain connected from anywhere. Add that to the easy connectivity within the island, daily air and sea links to major destinations, top-class healthcare services and helpful government services, remote workers will feel right at home as soon as they land.

Remote workers will also find a dynamic digital nomad community with which to connect and share ideas and experiences, while a good number of co-working spaces offer additional networking and meeting spaces.

Couple these attractions with a rich history and heritage, a vibrant arts and culture scene, outdoor activities, great beaches and cuisine, and Malta ticks many of the boxes on the digital nomad’s list.

The Nomad Residence Permit

Eligible applicants can be employed with a company registered outside Malta, self-employed with registration abroad or freelancers giving services to clients registered abroad. Applicants are required to earn an annual income of €32,400, and the permit is open for all sectors and for immediate family members of applicants. Permits are granted for one year, with the possibility of renewal twice, for a maximum of a three-year stay, if applicants still meet the Programme’s eligibility criteria.

The Permit is also open to immediate family members who are dependent on the main applicant. The online application process is straightforward and has a processing timeline of approximately 30 working days. An application fee of €300 applies for each individual on the application.

Life in Malta beyond Nomadism

For digital nomad entrepreneurs who fall in love with Malta and who would like to plant roots and open their own business locally, they will find a number of government entities geared to help them set up shop.

Moreover, if they have highly innovative projects eligible under the new Malta Startup Residence Programme, non-EU founders, co-founders and core employees may avail themselves of a facilitated migratory pathway that offers a medium-term residency of 3+5 years (3+3 for core employees).

All details about the Nomad Residence Permit can be found at https://nomad.residencymalta.gov.mt . For details of the Startup Residence Programme click here.

WhatsApp to let iOS users share pictures and videos without compression

0

WhatsApp’s latest iOS update includes a new feature that allows users to transfer image and video files in their original, uncompressed state.

According to reports, the feature allows users to send media files without using any additional compression that the app would normally employ to store data. This feature differs from the HD quality option, which was implemented earlier this year and only applies minimal compression on files in order to keep more of the original quality.

To utilize the option, users need to start by tapping the “+” in chat, selecting “Document” and then “Choose Photo or Video.” Once sent, recipients can tap into the file on WhatsApp to view photos and videos, but previews don’t seem to appear in the main chat interface. There’s a 2GB limit on the files that can be sent using the feature.

The changelog states that this will be available “in the coming weeks,” so it may take some time for it to arrive on your iOS device. WhatsApp has been testing the same feature for Android users since at least September of this year, implying that a stable release for Android handsets is not far away.

Exploring the Future of AI and IoT in LG Products: How LG is shaping the future of smart living.

0

Life’s Good (LG), a global leader in smart home appliances, has adopted Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the user experience of their Internet of Things (IoT) products. LG’s goal is to develop intelligent solutions that coexist with humans and the environment. In line with this, LG has incorporated technologies such as LG ThinQ for smart home solutions, LG ThinQ UP for appliances that are personalized to the user’s preferences, AI DD for the next generation of smart washing machines, and IBM Quantum Network for utilizing the revolutionary power of quantum computing for Next Gen appliances of the future.

LG ThinQ

LG ThinQ is an LG brand of smart and connected appliances that can be operated via voice commands or a smartphone app. ThinQ platform aims to use AI-powered technologies such as such as ChatGPT and AI-based voice ID to provide an even smarter, more personalized home experience.

The ThinQ app allows customers to remotely control LG appliances from their smartphones, allowing them to monitor all of their devices from virtually any location. For instance, you can monitor the progress of your laundry cycle, check when the water filters in your refrigerator need to be replaced, and send cooking instructions to your oven. You may also operate your air conditioner, vacuum, and other smart equipment while you’re out and about.

ThinQ devices can be controlled by Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. For example, “Hey Google, pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees” or “Alexa, start the dishwasher” are both valid commands.

ThinQ is compatible with Google Calendar, a plethora of third-party apps, and connected car services, allowing it to present consumers with a variety of useful, often accessed information via a single app.

Additionally, LG has connected numerous IoT devices via Matter, resulting in a hub where customers can easily manage Matter-certified appliances and devices from LG via the ThinQ app. LG now supports the majority of Matter devices, including lights and sensors, and will continue to extend connectivity with other items.

Furthermore, LG ThinQ appliances employ real-time usage data to generate useful reports, maintenance reminders, and proactive warnings, allowing you to keep your appliances working smoothly while saving you time and money. LG ThinQ appliances, for example, may distribute detergent in increments to improve cleaning, refrigerators can alter the interior light brightness level at night, and dishwashers can establish a dry-only cycle when a wash is not required.

LG ThinQ UP

LG ThinQ UP home appliances can evolve to match each user’s particular taste and lifestyle needs, and they can be regularly upgraded with downloadable capabilities via the ThinQ app. LG ThinQ UP 2.0 redefines personalization by continuously adjusting product performance and service options to users’ particular preferences throughout the customer journey. Unlike typical devices with fixed features and specs, ThinQ UP-compatible appliances allow for the addition of new functions over time.

LG’s AI DD

AI DD is an abbreviation for Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive. AI DD in an LG washing machine employs AI technology and refers to a database of wash motions; the washing machine then examines the load characteristics and determines the optimal option for a thorough clean with little clothing wear.

To measure the load, AI DD employs four sensors: a weight sensor, a hall sensor, an acceleration sensor, and a turbidity sensor. The weight sensor determines the weight of the laundry, the hall sensor determines the motor’s speed and direction, the acceleration sensor determines the vibration of the drum, and the turbidity sensor determines the quality of the water.

To give the most optimized washing cycle, AI DD also leverages big data on twenty thousand pieces of information connected to washer usage and applies settings based on the volume and delicateness of the clothing in each load of laundry.

You no longer have to worry about selecting the appropriate wash cycle or setting for your clothes with AI DD. AI DD will do it automatically for you.

The future: LG and IBM Quantum Network

Auto parts marketplace Mtor raises $2.8M  to revolutionize the automotive aftermarket industry in Egypt

0

Egypt’s online auto parts marketplace Mtor has announced a $2.8M pre-seed round led by Algebra Ventures, with participation from Dutch Founders Fund (DFF), Aditum Ventures, LoftyInc Capital Management, and several prominent local and global angel investors.

Mtor is an online marketplace revolutionizing the automotive aftermarket industry. It provides sophisticated tech solutions to streamline a currently fragmented supply chain, creating a unified platform for local car workshops to access a broad range of automotive spare parts on-demand at competitive prices. Catering to the needs of mechanics and car owners, Mtor strives to provide faster delivery and accurate data that simplifies and accelerates the mechanic’s workflow.

“It can be a car owner’s nightmare to get their car serviced. Mtor was founded to fundamentally transform this reality, and make the process easier and efficient, empowering a layer of local car workshops that is well rounded with quality parts, a suitable price position and a good customer experience,” Mohamed Maged, CEO of Mtor, said.

Founded just a year ago, Mtor boasts a strong team, comprised of individuals with deep-rooted experience in tech, as well as the automotive and logistics sectors.

Egypt’s automotive after-sales market, one of the largest in the African and MENA regions, has a market value exceeding $5B. The nation has an aging fleet of 8M registered vehicles with an average car age significantly above the global average. Car owners are spending an average of over $600 annually at over 35,000 car workshops and service providers. Egypt’s automotive after-sales market represents a massive untapped potential. Since its inception in 2022, Mtor has delivered over 70,000 orders, partnering with over 2,500 car workshops in the greater Cairo area.

“We aim to become the most trusted partner to our mechanics by empowering them to better cater to the car owner’s needs in terms of quality parts and fast service,” Maged added.

The local automotive aftermarket is inefficient with a fragmented and scattered supply chain. Workshops and mechanics face many challenges including limited product availability, inaccurate fitment data, and a lack of price transparency. These issues inevitably trickle down to car owners, who are also faced with limited-service quality guarantees and a complex time-consuming spare parts procurement process. Mtor aims to overhaul this system through its controlled tech-enabled marketplace, backed by its proprietary Mtor Mechanic app, where pricing, availability, and fitment data are reliably just a click away.

“We are building the tech infrastructure where global suppliers and importers, as well as local mechanics, can speak the same language, optimizing the supply chain through a controlled, tech-enabled marketplace, where pricing, availability and fitment data are reliably one-click away from workshops,” Maged added.

The funds raised will be utilized to further grow Mtor’s product suite, digitize local car workshops and eliminate major inefficiencies in the automotive spare parts supply chain, in Egypt and the region. Mtor has partnered with leading spare parts importers to facilitate their distribution to workshops and provide them with the necessary predictive demand data to optimize their importing cycles and cash flow. Above all, Mtor’s fundamental objective is to cultivate an exceptional team to provide stellar products and service across the automotive aftermarket supply chain.

Karim Hussein, Managing Partner at Algebra Ventures said: “We are delighted to partner with Mtor’s founders and team who have built an innovative business that solves a significant pain for mechanics, auto parts suppliers and vehicle owners. Mtor’s unique visual and voice interface coupled with a sophisticated fitment and parts matching engine eliminates the hours spent daily by mechanics hunting for the right part at the right price. LG Makes Organizational Changes, Increases Opportunities for Kenyan Consumers

0

LG Electronics has announced organizational changes that reflect a strategic move towards realizing its Future Vision 2030, announced in July.

According to the company, the establishment of the Overseas Sales and Marketing Company will be reporting directly to LG’s CEO William Cho and the company will be led by Thomas Yoon, former president and CEO of LG Electronics North America. This change signifies LG’s commitment to strengthening its global presence and brand power.

For Kenyan consumers, this shift emphasizes LG’s dedication to becoming a smart life solution company that goes beyond home appliances. The Overseas Sales and Marketing Company’s role in managing sales subsidiaries in various regions, including Asia and Africa, increases the opportunity for consumers in the region to access more LG products and innovations.

Simultaneously, the Business Solutions company has expanded its sales and business operations in major regions such as North America, Europe, Central Asia, Asia and Latin America.

This expansion strengthens LG’s executive capabilities in the overseas operations of strategically critical businesses including B2B operations, in addition to providing the necessary support to bolster the qualitative growth of all other business units by aiding the development of overseas sales expertise as well as accelerating the advancement of platform-based businesses and innovative Direct to Consumers (D2C) business models.

The focus on accelerating growth and enhancing global brand power aligns with Kenya’s growing tech-savvy population, creating opportunities for LG to connect with consumers in diverse spaces.

The D2C Business Group will expand customer contact points by strengthening Online Brand Shop (OBS) activities and customer data-based digital marketing capabilities, recognizing the importance of e-commerce, a growing trend in Kenya.

Meanwhile, an Engineering Sales Division will be established under the Air Solutions Business in the Home Appliance & Air Solution Company maximizing business synergy in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) business. Given Kenya’s climate and the increasing need for sustainable energy solutions, this move is particularly relevant in increasing the options available for consumers.

Under the Home Entertainment (HE) Company, the webOS SW Development Group will be established for direct reporting to Park Hyoung-sei, president of the HE Company. The extended Reality (XR) Business Division will also be established directly under the headquarters.

These transformations are expected to expand LGs ambitions of becoming a media and entertainment powerhouse, aligning with Kenya’s vibrant entertainment industry.

Finally, the Vehicle Component Solutions Company will set up the Global Customer Strategy Division directly under its headquarters to establish an integrated strategy for order and sales management and strengthen marketing functions to accelerate the growth of the business.

This is especially relevant to Kenya, where a vibrant shift is taking place in the transportation industry, including the rise of home-grown vehicle manufacturers, who will constantly require vehicle component solutions.

Spotify announces laying off 17% of its employees

Despite announcing 550 million active users and positive earnings report, Spotify announced a significant reduction in its workforce, shedding 17% of its employees.

The surprise decision comes as the music-streaming giant deals with economic uncertainty and attempts to restructure its operations. CEO Daniel Ek acknowledged the upcoming difficult times and outlined the reasoning behind the layoffs. He noted that the reductions were required to match Spotify’s cost structure with its long-term ambitions and ensure sustainable growth. He stressed the importance of taking fast action to close the growing gap between Spotify’s financial ambitions and existing operational costs.

“While I am convinced this is the right action for our company, I also understand it will be incredibly painful for our team,” he said.

Approximately 1,500 of Spotify’s 9000 employees are expected to be affected by the layoffs. They will be taken care of by Spotify’s five-month severance package healthcare coverage throughout that time, and immigration/career support to offset the damage.

Spotify’s decision mirrors the broader issues that the technology industry is facing, with numerous companies facing economic headwinds and being forced to make difficult decisions. Nokia’s recent announcement to cut 14,000 positions, as well as big tech firms like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta cutting off more than 200,000 staff combined in 2023, highlight the industry’s difficulties.

WhatsApp to soon allow you to instantly share status updates with Instagram

0

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app with over 2.5 billion active users, is preparing to deepen its integration with Instagram by releasing a new feature that will allow users to seamlessly share status updates across both platforms.

Building on its earlier integration with Facebook, WhatsApp appears to be expanding this functionality to Instagram, greatly easing the process of sharing content with a bigger audience across Meta-owned platforms.

This forthcoming functionality, which is presently under development, would allow users to easily upload their WhatsApp status updates directly to their Instagram stories in a single step, according to WABetaInfo. Previously users had to manually create and submit separate updates on each platform.

The feature is optional, which means that users can choose whether or not to use it. Those who choose to keep separate status updates on each platform are free to do so.

The ability to share status updates to Instagram is included in the current WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.25.20 version, which is available for download from the Google Play Store. It is still in development and will be included in a future app version.

UK regulator Warns of Potential Harm to Digital Design Sector in Adobe’s Bid to Acquire Figma

0

In a significant development for the UK’s burgeoning digital design sector, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has provisionally found that Adobe’s proposed acquisition of Figma, the world’s leading provider of product design software, could jeopardize innovation and competition in the industry.

The CMA highlights concerns that the deal may harm the interests of the vast majority of UK digital designers who heavily rely on Figma’s software.

Impact on UK Businesses and Consumers

The CMA’s investigation reveals that “Approximately 80% of the professional product design market in the UK currently uses Figma’s software.”

With app development alone contributing £19.4 billion to the UK economy and experiencing rapid growth, the potential impact on businesses and consumers is substantial.

Apps developed in the UK are integral to everyday tasks such as food delivery, travel booking, and personal finance management.

Digital design, constituting 2.7% of the national economy and employing over 850,000 people, is a vital industry. The CMA’s provisional findings emphasize that the software used in this sector is crucial to its success, and the merger could adversely affect the UK’s digital design economy.

Provisional Findings and Concerns

During a detailed Phase 2 investigation, the independent group led by Margot Daly, chair of the CMA’s investigation, provisionally found that the deal would eliminate competition in key software markets: product design, image editing, and illustration.

The CMA expresses concerns that the merger could lead to reduced choice, innovation, and the development of new competitive products.

Margot Daly stated, “The proposed deal has the potential to impact the UK’s digital design industry by reducing choice, innovation, and the development of new competitive products.”

The CMA’s provisional findings point to the elimination of competition between Adobe and Figma in crucial software markets.

Product Design Software: Figma’s Critical Role

Figma’s product design software is integral to how companies design apps and websites for millions of users.

Used by well-known firms in sectors crucial to the UK digital economy, including Airbnb, Patagonia, and Vodafone, Figma plays a pivotal role in the success of digital enterprises.

The CMA’s inquiry group provisionally concluded that the deal would remove the constraint Adobe exerts on Figma through its existing product design software, Adobe XD.

Image Editing and Illustration Software: Threat to Innovation

The inquiry group also found that Figma is a credible future competitor to Adobe in image editing and illustration software.

Figma’s potential threat has driven product development in Adobe’s Photoshop and Illustrator applications.

The CMA expresses concern that if the deal proceeds, it would eliminate Figma as a competitor, hampering innovation and product development by Adobe.

Next Steps and Timeline

The CMA’s findings are provisional, and the authority will now consult on them, including potential remedies to the identified competition concerns.

The deadline for responses from interested parties is Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

The inquiry group is expected to issue its final decision by February 25, 2024.

The potential remedies could include blocking the deal outright, and the CMA urges stakeholders to provide their views on the matter.

The digital design sector, worth nearly £60 billion and employing over 866,000 people, has grown significantly in the UK, becoming the largest and fastest-growing area of design between 2010 and 2019.

According to IBISWorld, the app development industry in the UK was worth £19.4 billion in 2022, growing faster than the wider technology sector overall.

Product design, image editing, and illustration are crucial components of the digital design process.

For the past 8 years, I have fought for financial sovereignty for the Global South. Finally, I am glad to be able to fulfil the mission I began almost a decade ago. I’m confident that Bitcoin will play a crucial role in promoting the prosperity of our continent, and I’m thrilled and privileged to contribute to the company’s ambition and growth. Our first major goal will be to create an interoperable Pan-African clearing layer taking intra African trade from the single digits, to levels comparable to intra-European trade. Africa alone has the potential to make NoOnes a trillion dollar company but when you factor in the rest of the global south the sky’s the limit.”

Sky.Garden relaunches after a Kshs 250 Million Investment from Lipa Later Group to Power Social Commerce in Kenya

0

Online retailer Sky.Garden has relaunched following a Kshs 250 million buyout by the Lipa Later Group early this month saving it from closure and eventual loss of investor money after the Kenyan ecommerce startup failed to raise follow-on funding.

With the acquisition and revamp, Sky.Garden is no longer just about e-commerce but is moving into social commerce and is building a merchant marketplace to connect 100,000 merchants in the next year. Globally, social commerce is expected to grow three times as fast as traditional commerce to $1.2 trillion by 2025, up from $492 billion currently. Growth is predicted to be driven primarily by Gen Z and Millennial social media users, accounting for 62% of global social commerce spend by 2025. Social commerce is poised to take a large chunk of the e-commerce market as consumers gravitate to shopping on social apps.

According to Juliet Wanjiru, Head of E-commerce Sky.Garden, ‘Today marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Sky.Garden, as we embark on a transformative journey to enhance and broaden our offerings for both merchants and customer communities.’

By Introducing innovative products such as Sky.Tickets, Sky. Logistics, Sky. Commerce, and Sky.Wallet, we are diversifying our merchant categories to include a dynamic online marketplace for services and events. Notably, Sky.Wallet will offer tailored solutions, empowering merchants with access to financing, real-time transaction monitoring, direct bill payments (including utility bills and salaries), seamless deposits and withdrawals to Mpesa or Bank, and the ability to open a bank account. This ensures comprehensive financial support for businesses, powering all merchant transactions.”

In 2021, Sky Garden secured a $4 million Series A investment led by The SANAD Fund for MSME including  Aavishkaar, the Uncovered Fund, and other angel investors. At the time, the platform was serving more than 15,000 sellers and said it would use the fund to expand their operations to cities in East Africa and scale this to the rest of the Sub- Saharan region.

Dubbed as the the Sky.Garden ecosystem, the new platform encompasses not only the convenience of online shopping but also the infrastructure for local businesses to thrive. From seamless payment solutions to logistic support, marketing tools, and business insights. Entrepreneurs can build, grow, and expand their ventures within our ecosystem, while shoppers enjoy an unparalleled variety of products, services, and a shopping experience that continually evolves to meet their needs.

Sky.Logistics aims to offer same-day delivery for customers. Sky.Garden has also introduced Buy Now, Pay Later, powered by LipaLater as a convenient alternative payment option, providing flexibility and ease in transactions.

Its leap into social commerce with Sky.Commerce is expected to revolutionize the online shopping experience by seamlessly integrating social interactions with e-commerce. This innovative platform will allow shoppers to discover, share, and purchase products directly within their social networks. Merchants on the other hand will be able to reduce their online interactions and make sales all the time from anywhere.

The relaunch coincides with the rapid expansion of e-commerce markets in Kenya and other African countries, driven by factors such as increased internet penetration and more affordable data costs.

Growing internet access is expected to boost the African e-commerce market in the upcoming years. By 2030, the internet penetration in the region will reach an average of nearly 70%, according to Euromonitor — a considerable jump from 45% in 2023. Most of the access revolution is due to mobile connectivity with 83% of the African population currently covered by a mobile broadband network, according to GSMA.

“Our group vision is to be a commerce catalyst for businesses and communities across Africa. We firmly believe that local ownership and operation are essential in understanding the needs of our people, contributing to the prosperity of our nation, and forging a true connection with our community. This local insight has empowered us to bring the vast world of e-commerce closer to Kenyans while simultaneously creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and merchants to thrive,” concluded Lipa Later, Group CEO Eric Muli.

The Essential Guide to Water Purification, Ensuring Clean and Safe Drinking Water

0

In a world where access to clean water is essential for sustaining life, the importance of water purification cannot be overstated. Water, a fundamental resource for human survival, is often contaminated with various pollutants and impurities that can pose serious health risks. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the significance of water purification, the different methods available, and why it is crucial for ensuring clean and safe drinking water.

The Importance of Water Purification

Water is a universal solvent, capable of dissolving a wide range of substances. Unfortunately, this also means that water can easily become contaminated with pollutants such as bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and other harmful microorganisms. Consuming contaminated water can lead to waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, causing significant harm to human health.

Water purification plays a crucial role in removing or neutralizing these contaminants, ensuring that the water we consume is safe and free from harmful substances. This is especially important as the sources of water, including rivers, lakes, and groundwater, are vulnerable to pollution from industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and human activities.

Common Water Contaminants

Before delving into water purification methods, it’s essential to understand the common contaminants found in water:

  1. Bacteria and Viruses: Harmful microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Hepatitis A can contaminate water sources, leading to waterborne illnesses.
  2. Chemical Pollutants: Pesticides, fertilizers, heavy metals, and industrial chemicals can seep into water sources, posing serious health risks when consumed.
  3. Sediments: Particles and sediments in water can affect its taste, odor, and appearance. While not always harmful, they can indicate poor water quality.
  4. Dissolved Solids: Minerals, salts, and other dissolved solids can affect the taste and safety of water. High concentrations of these substances may lead to health issues.
  5. Protozoa and Parasites: Organisms like Giardia and Cryptosporidium can cause gastrointestinal issues and other health problems.

Water Purification Methods

Several methods are employed to purify water, each targeting specific contaminants. Here are some common water purification techniques:

  1. Boiling: One of the simplest methods, boiling water kills most bacteria, viruses, and parasites. However, it may not remove chemical contaminants or dissolved solids.
  2. Filtration: Filtration involves passing water through a physical barrier, like a fine mesh or porous material, to remove particles, sediments, and some microorganisms. Water filters vary in their effectiveness, so choosing the right one is crucial.
  3. Chemical Disinfection: Chemicals like chlorine, iodine, and chlorine dioxide can be added to water to kill or inactivate microorganisms. However, the taste and odor of the water may be affected.
  4. Reverse Osmosis: This advanced filtration process uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, and dissolved solids. It is highly effective but may produce wastewater.
  5. Distillation: Distillation involves boiling water to produce steam, which is then condensed back into liquid form. This process removes contaminants that have a higher boiling point than water. However, it may not eliminate some volatile chemicals.
  6. Ultraviolet (UV) Purification: UV light is used to disrupt the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce. While effective against bacteria and viruses, it may not remove other contaminants.

The Role of Water Purification in Everyday Life

Water purification is not only essential for communities and regions with inadequate access to clean water but also for individuals in urban areas. Municipal water treatment facilities play a crucial role in ensuring that tap water meets safety standards. However, relying solely on public water sources may not be sufficient, as contaminants can still enter the water supply through aging infrastructure or unforeseen events.

Many households invest in water purification systems to add an extra layer of protection and improve the taste and quality of their drinking water. Whether through simple pitcher filters or more sophisticated under-sink systems, these technologies empower individuals to take control of their water quality.

Conclusion

In conclusion, water purification is a vital process that safeguards human health by ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water. With various contaminants threatening water sources worldwide, implementing effective purification methods is more crucial than ever. Whether through traditional methods like boiling and filtration or advanced technologies like reverse osmosis and UV purification, the goal remains the same – to provide communities and individuals with water that is free from harmful impurities.

As consumers, understanding the significance of water purification empowers us to make informed choices about the water we consume. By investing in reliable purification methods and supporting initiatives that promote water quality, we contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future where access to clean water is a universal right.

Java House has launched its first branch in Meru County, signaling the growing influence of the region as an investment, tourism and business destination. The new outlet, located at the Greenwood City Mall, becomes Java’s 86th in the ongoing ambitious expansion plan that seeks to continue bringing the Java experience closer to more of its customers.

Guests can expect the full Java experience, including Java hospitality and amazing meal options that cater to all, making them feel at home away from home. We will serve the entire Java menu, including Java signature meals, monthly specials, kids’ meals, and sharing meal options. Our great atmosphere will also provide our guests with a convenient location to connect for business or pleasure. We will also have retail items such as coffee packs, cookies, granola, and cold brew coffee, all of which allow you to “carry the JavaLove Home.”
Speaking about the development, Java House CEO Priscilla Gathungu stated that the Meru expansion is consistent with the company’s overall strategy of targeting strategic locations throughout the country and region.

“We have been very intentional about listening to our customers about what they want us to be and where they want us to be, and our presence in Meru is part of that commitment. We are inspired by the level of appreciation and response we have received from all our customers in the last few days, and our assurance to them is that we will continue to provide outstanding casual dining experiences while also providing a place for our customers to host quick meetings and networking opportunities,” said Gathungu.

Meru County’s growing population creates potential demand for dining options, making it an appealing market for a new restaurant. The county is also known for its proximity to national parks such as Meru National Park and Lewa Wildlife Sanctuary, with locals and tourists looking for dining options and restaurants that meet their needs, including international dishes and fusion cuisine.

While welcoming the new outlet to Meru, Jane Nkatha, a director at Greenwood City Mall said: “The unique features of Meru region are its richness in agriculture which makes the county to be one of the few richest counties in Kenya. With the people of Meru being very hardworking, we needed a place to enjoy our hard earned resources. Java has remembered us.”

The Meru branch is second in the larger upper Mount Kenya region, with the other nearby outlet in Nanyuki. Across the country, other branches are located in towns such as Nakuru, Naivasha, Kericho, Machakos, Kisumu and Mombasa. From a broader economic standpoint, one of Java’s most commendable features is the emphasis on training and nurturing talent in the hospitality industry. Java not only provides employment opportunities but also equips individuals with valuable skills and knowledge by training baristas, chefs, and hospitality staff.
“For many people, this commitment to professional development can lead to career advancement and personal empowerment. Furthermore, our commitment to working closely with suppliers and partners will result in stronger relationships, better sourcing options, and the potential for mutual growth,” Gathungu adds.
Since its inception in Nairobi in 1999, Java has expanded to serve a loyal customer base throughout East Africa, supported by three additional sister brands, Kukito, Planet Yoghurt, and 360 Degrees Pizza.
