10 Tech Influencers on YouTube You Need to Know

In 2019, who doesn’t have a YouTube channel or two that they simply can’t live without? Doesn’t matter if it’s about food, design, entrepreneurship, gaming or just about anything.

From a group of friends I talk to, just about everybody has a selection of YouTubers they love, subscribe to, and watch regularly. Some are local, others are international.

For me, it’s quite a handful of different channels, from young couples take us through marriage experiences like the Kenyan Wajesus Family and Australian based Jamie and Nikkie, to tech Influencers and reviewers like iJustine, among others. There are others who follow church services and sermons on different topics, while others just want to know the latest hairdo like the natural hair journey of women who’ve decided to ditch the perms like Wabosha for something more interesting when managing their natural tresses.

I can’t begin to tell you how many well-produced and informative channels I’ve discovered.

As for tech, content creators have an even larger audience as viewers stumble across the videos while they search for a product name (Samsung for example) or brand on YouTube. Definitely there are YouTubers who have built a loyal audience and following.

Keeping up with trends has become tasking and hence we thought it would be fun to compile a list of 10 tech influencers we think you should know about or subscribe to. Although, this is not the definitive list, nor will everyone listed match your choice, but they are what we found is poppin’ right now in no particular order.

Honor 20, Budget Huawei with P30 Pro best features

0

The Huawei P30 Pro was showcased to the world in March and it certainly sent shivers into its rivals. The P30 Pro features a stunning 6.47-inch screen, fast Kirin 980 processor and quadruple rear camera.

This is definitely a top-class phone but it also arrives at a very premium price. To own one you are going to need Kes. 99,999/- (approximately $1000) in your wallet.

As Huawei was toiling to dominate the premium smartphone segment, the US government slapped it hard with a blacklist forcing Google to withdraw Huawei’s access to Android operating system.

Although Huawei confirmed it will keep updating current software on devices it seems highly unlikely that phones, such as the P30 Pro, will receive any major Android upgrades in the future and that could be hugely disappointing for users.

The new HONOR 20 goes on sale in the UK on June 21st and packs some serious specs at a much lower price. Customers who pre-order the HONOR 20 by June 20 will also receive a free HONOR Watch Magic, normally £179.99. The phone is available for £399 at Three, Amazon, Mobile Phones Direct, Very and Carphone Warehouse.

It comes with a 6.26-inch screen with a hole punch display, that same Kirin 980 processor and there’s even a four camera setup on the rear.

HONOR 20s photography system leads the field with a Sony IMX586 48MP Main Camera, as well as a 16MP Super Wide Angle Camera, 2MP Depth Assist Camera and 2MP Macro Camera. The smartphone is also equipped with AIS Super Night Mode, letting users record their magic moments in great details even in dimly-lit scenarios.

Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 128GB of internal storage and 6GB of RAM.

The HONOR 20 also has something called Super Bluetooth, with HONOR boasting that it uses AI algorithms to adjust its Bluetooth signals and connect to devices more than 244 meters away – further than any other phone tested.

This phone comes with an industry-leading technology including Kirin 980 chipset, GPU Turbo 3.0, a 3,750 mAh battery and Virtual 9.1 Surround Sound. On the rear, HONOR 20 redefines the user experience by becoming the first product in HONOR’s history to introduce a multi-dimensional, Dynamic Holographic glass back, available in either Sapphire Blue or Midnight Black.

As much as the price for this phone is a bit of a bargain, it’s worth being aware of the current climate surrounding Huawei and its HONOR brand.

Google recently revealed its new Android Q operating system which is expected to be released later this year. Unfortunately if things don’t turn around, the new ban could mean Huawei and HONOR users will now be stuck with the current Android 9 Pie OS and won’t ever get to see the new features on offer with Q.

BBC launches 14 week program to get women into tech careers

0

A new scheme from the BBC will enable women looking to move into a career in software engineering to gain the skills they need to do so.

Applications already opened for this year’s Step Into Tech scheme, with an application deadline of July 5, 2019.

After a hugely successful pilot last year, the BBC Step Into Tech training course is the ideal opportunity for women wanting to move into a career in Software Engineering. This in-depth course provides the fundamental skills needed to kick start a career in the sector.

This course is ideal for women who may be returning to work after a break, college leavers and career changers; anyone that is motivated for a career in software Engineering but need to learn the core skills first.

The scheme is a 14 week programme delivered in partnership with an external training provider. It will incorporate a full immersive week, followed by evening sessions covering front end and back end development, ending on a project delivery of your choice. The course will be delivered onsite at the BBC.

The curriculum will deliver the most up to date technologies, with practical applications, all of which will be underpinned by core personal development sessions for the participants success.

BBC chief technology and product officer Matthew Postgate said that women are underrepresented in the sector overall and the BBC, like many other employers in the industry, would want to change this. This scheme is meant to give the perfect grounding to women from all walks of life for a new career in technology.

Upon successful completion of the programme all participants will have the opportunity to apply for an Associate Software Engineer role within BBC Design + Engineering.

Huawei reportedly inviting developers to publish their apps on its AppGallery

0

Shortly after the United States blocked Huawei from purchasing U.S. tech without government approval, Google was one of the first companies to comply with the ban. Alphabet Inc. revoked Huawei’s Android license, which intensified the Chinese company’s efforts for its own Android alternative operating system and app store.

Last month, Google locked Huawei out of its Android updates, though the US Commerce Department granted the Chinese tech giant a 90 day repreviegeneral license to update existing devices, temporarily easing restrictions on Huawei’s access to US components. Huawei’s phones run on a version of Google’s Android mobile operating system.

However, Huawei is reportedly inviting Google Play Store developers to publish their apps on its own AppGallery app store.

According to XDA, Huawei is trying to get developers to help it fill up the AppGallery storefront found on Huawei’s EMUI interface by having them publish their Android apps in the AppGallery.

Although we must agree that in order to have a chance at survival on its own, Huawei will have to populate its app store with titles. The company is already reaching out to popular Android app developers with requests to publish their apps in the Huawei AppGallery. Courtesy of XDA Developers one such letter to a developer who wishes to remain anonymous reads as below:

Subject: [OFFICIAL] Invitation to join Huawei AppGallery

Cher XXX team,

– In the last 2 years, Huawei shipped over 350M phones, about half of them in western markets.

– All Huawei phones have our official AppStore “AppGallery” preloaded globally, with 270 million monthly active users.

– We realized that your great Android App XXX is not yet published in our AppGallery.

– In order to guarantee a smooth usage of your App for our users, Huawei is committed to provide you with full support, to help you publish your App into AppGallery.

– We would therefore like to invite you to join our 560k developers community for free, in our Huawei Developer portal.

Considering Huawei’s current status quo, the company is reevaluating its target to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor, a position currently held by Samsung. Huawei’s chief strategy officer said, according to a Reuters report, that Huawei would have become the largest in Q4 of 2019 but now we feel that this process may take longer.

There’s no clarity if Huawei was doing this same thing before the ban was enacted. Although, this email is notable because it lines up with a report from Bloomberg last month. Huawei has been reportedly working up its efforts with AppGallery to make it a viable alternative to the Play Store, and that report included reaching out to developers to bring more apps into the marketplace.

Dynamic email in Gmail to be available on July 2, 2019

0

Google is rolling out a major update to Gmail giving users the ability to send and receive dynamic emails from July 2, 2019.

The service, which is currently available in a beta version to G Suite customers, uses the accelerated mobile pages (AMP) framework to load web pages within the Gmail application and launched with support from companies like Pinterest, Booking, and Doodle, but there’ll also be support from Google’s own services.

What this means for your inbox is:

Instead of every link or action leading to a new window opening, dynamic content will open within messages.

At the moment you receive a dynamic mail message with Gmail, links inside the message will open within the message. For instance, if someone sends you a link to a Google Doc, rather than it launching in a new tab or window in your browser, the document will open within the email where you can read or edit it.

If you receive a link to a web page, you’ll be able to view that page from within the message.

Dynamic mails rely on AMP (accelerated mobile pages), and while it will require specially formatted emails in order to work, some social media companies are already embracing it. This is supported right across the entire Google product suite.

In simple terms, having AMP in Gmail, users will perform web-based tasks right in their inbox, such as filling out forms, RSVPing to an event, responding to an edit in Google Docs, or browsing images in a slide. The feature will only be available for Gmail on the web, with mobile due to come soon.

Dynamic email is expected to streamline workflows by keeping everything in one place. For businesses, it means you can keep an entire workflow in an email message without needing users to switch between windows.

For the rest of us, it’ll be a useful time saver for tasks like changing hotel reservations or editing documents. Dynamic emails will launch by default on July 2nd, so no need to move a muscle to enable the feature.

Huawei’s New OS Could Launch in Q3

0

Huawei confirms it has built its own operating system just in case US tensions disrupt use of Google’s Android

Unfortunately or fortunately, being put on a U.S. Department of Commerce blacklist has a way of forcing a company’s hands.

Huawei could reportedly introduce a new operating system (OS) because it’s being cut off from core aspects of the Android and Windows platforms on which it previously relied. A number reports have claimed Huawei plans to make the switch soon, and the latest reportedly came from Chinese newspaper Global Times, which said it could debut in 3Q19.

Huawei Technologies, the largest smartphone vendor in China, said it has developed its own operating systems (OS) for both smartphones and computers, which can be used on its devices in the event that current systems provided by US technology giants are no longer available.

A previous US ban on Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE from using American products and services served as a reality check for China’s technology ambitions. Google’s Android and Apple’s proprietary iOS have a stranglehold on smartphone operating systems, accounting for 99.9 per cent of the global market, according to Gartner estimates last year.

Interestingly, Huawei started building its own operating system after a US investigation into Huawei and ZTE Corp back in 2012.

Although times have changed since 2012 when a small group of international brands dominated the smartphone market and Huawei had less than a 5% share of the global market. The Chinese company is now the world’s second-biggest smartphone supplier having shipped a total of 206 million smartphones in 2018, according to IDC data, with nearly half of that number going to overseas markets.

Over the years, there has been a long line of developers and operating systems seeking to break the OS duopoly; Microsoft with its Windows Mobile OS, Samsung Electronics with its Tizen system and Nokia’s Symbian platform. Android and Apple’s iOS still have a virtual duopoly today. Amidst all this, Huawei equips all its smartphones with the popular Android system, owned by Google, and its laptop products with Windows OS, owned by Microsoft.

Having an alternative OS has likely taken on added urgency though for Huawei between escalating trade tensions between the US and China. The company being the world’s biggest telecommunications network equipment supplier, is also facing a string of charges from the US, including that the company stole trade secrets, violated economic sanctions and concealed its Iran business dealings via an unofficial subsidiary.

Huawei has repeatedly and vehemently denied these allegations, accusing the US of lacking evidence. The OS issue took on extra urgency after the US government placed Huawei and its affiliates on a trade blacklist that restricts the company from buying services and parts from US companies without approval in mid-May.

Google and Microsoft, whose Android and Windows software Huawei largely relies upon in its smartphones, tablets and laptops, have both suspended access for new Huawei devices.

The Trump administration has since given companies a 90-day window to adjust to the new restrictions until supplies are completely blocked. The Chinese company has finally had to acknowledge its long-secret plans for an alternative OS. In the meantime, chipmakers including Qualcomm, Intel, and Xilinx are reportedly halting sales of technology (paywall) to Huawei. The embattled Chinese company has responded by stockpiling chips and components and ramping up its development of alternatives.

The Huawei OS is based on a microkernel that is light and can react quickly to adjustments and batches, according to the people with knowledge on it. Huawei engineers on the OS project have also studied Android and Apple’s iOS closely to learn from them.

During development the compatibility with Android has been one of the biggest technical challenges for the Huawei OS. Compatibility would enable a Huawei phone with its own OS to download and run Android apps seamlessly. Having a successful compatibility layer with Android would also mean that app developers around the world will not need to develop extra code for Huawei’s OS.

According to public trademark information, Huawei registered the brand name “Huawei Hongmeng” last year in China, leading to speculation that this could be the name of the OS. This translated into English is “primordial world”.

Separately, according to public records for trademarks, the company applied to register “Huawei Ark OS” through the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) at the end of May for the OS and other software. Global Times says that Huawei is planning to unveil the new OS as early as August or September 2019.  The company seems to be testing two versions of the OS – one for the Chinese market and the other for the international market.

Despite the company repeatedly saying that it didn’t want to switch from its current OSes, TechRadar reported on May 28 that Huawei’s platform could debut as early as June, per Huawei Enterprise Business Group Middle East managing director and vice president Alaa Elshimy.

Questions remain though over potential user experience issues and whether overseas customers will actually want a phone without popular Google apps. Huawei does not have a solid commercial release date yet, we will just have to be patient to see how this turns out for them.

Huawei P30 Lite Hands-on Review; Value for money with an eye-catching finish

0

Huawei’s P30 Pro is a stunning handset, and was a genuine pleasure to review. But at a minimum price of Kes. 99,999/-, it just isn’t for everyone. The P30 is also a possibility, of course, with a lesser specification and a lower price of Kes. 72,999/-. Although if you want an up-to-date Huawei handset at a more affordable price, there’s the 6.15-inch P30 Lite, which costs Kes. 29,999/-. Naturally there’s a much-reduced set of features compared to the Pro and the standard model, but the smartphone is still a very serviceable smartphone.

This new mid-range phone from Huawei has many of the same design cues as its more expensive brothers, though gets by without the power of Leica’s branding.

In the trade-off, the 2x zoom camera is done away with on the Lite, you get a less capable main camera and a less powerful CPU. But at Kes. 29, 999/- the Huawei P30 Lite is a great deal.

An up-side for the Huawei P30 Lite is the availability of the headphone jack, which is now usually missing from top-end phones. The Huawei P30 Pro lacks it but has the USB Type-C headphones.

Just like so many of today’s handsets, the Huawei P30 Lite has a slippery, curved glass back.

Huawei P30 Lite – Design, specs and features

The P30 Lite shares some design similarities with its more expensive brothers, namely that curved rear, vibrant colorways, and triple camera layout. Huawei was one of the original masters of affordable metal and glass phones. You’ll find a few more plastic ones in its line-up today. The P30 Lite’s back is curved glass and the sides are glossy aluminium, while its display borders look as trim as an iPhone XS’s.

The Huawei P30 lite is also wrapped up in an eye-catching color finish. While our P30 Lite review unit came in an elegant and understated Peacock Blue, the P30 Lite comes in two other colors: Pearl White and Midnight Black.

The rear of the phone holds a triple camera module just like the more expensive P30, though the cameras no longer bear the Leica branding.

The P30 Lite also sheds the in-screen scanning solution present in its more expensive brothers, opting instead for a physical fingerprint scanner on the rear.

As for the display the P30 Lite sports a 6.15-inch FHD+ IPS display, with 3D curved glass on it and packs a 2312 x 1080 resolution . There’s a small notch at the top, and Huawei has hidden the earpiece near the top bezel to give the phone as much screen real-estate as possible. This is a switch from the OLED Huawei has used in the other P30s.

The much lower price makes the P30 Lite a more accessible phone than the spectacular P30 Pro I used just before this review. Its shape is more accommodating too. Several millimetres shorter and narrower, it fits in hands and pockets much more easily.

The devices side buttons are plastic-coated rather than metal, there’s a tiny sliver of plastic between the front glass and aluminium, and there’s no official water resistance. Please don’t go fishing with this phone.

I may have mentioned this earlier but it’s worth mentioning again, the Huawei P30 Lite has a headphone jack!

Huawei P30 Lite – Software and Performance

The Huawei P30 Lite runs Android 9.0 and has the same custom Huawei interface as phones like the P30 Pro. The Huawei P30 Lite does not have one as standard, but you can add a drawer in settings. Huawei does like to include its Gallery and Music apps, its own App Gallery and its own Health app. If you don’t like these apps, you can just drop them all into a folder and forget about them.

The Huawei P30 Lite is powered by a Kirin 710 chipset which sits as the brand’s mid-range option, along with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. This device isn’t as powerful as the P30 Pro, but there should still be enough oomph inside it to get the job done.

This is an octa-core CPU with a true mid-range core structure. There are four Cortex-A73 cores and your Cortex-A53s. Cheaper phones tend to have eight lower-power Cortex-A53s.

Power is a little less impressive where it matters most in real terms: the GPU. The Kirin 710 has a quad-core Mali-G51. The Huawei P30 Lite is significantly weaker than even the lower-end Adreno 615, seen in the Pixel 3a XL. Proven by techies across the globe at most levels, Qualcomm CPUs beat Huawei’s HiSilicon chipsets and Samsung’s Exynos-es.

This is not as punchy as the Adreno 615 or 616 used by some rivals. It’s about as low-powered a GPU can get and still provide decent 1080p performance. All in all the phone performs well when faced with most daily tasks, and even picture taking. There’s minimal lag when split-screen multitasking.

In terms of space for your stuff, the P30 Lite’s 128GB of internal storage coupled with microSD card support is just great. There should be enough room for your apps, movies and music, and while it isn’t the most affordable 128GB device around, it may well be one of the best looking.

Connectivity is also good. Naturally, 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all on board, though it’s not Bluetooth 5. Instead, the P30 Lite packs Bluetooth 4.2. There’s also NFC for mobile payment and one-touch pairing support, as well as a USB-C port for charging and data.

Huawei P30 Lite – Camera

Cameras have been the highlight of the P30 and P30 Pro as the Leica-engineered lenses produce some stunning photos. You don’t get that Leica branding on the P30 Lite, instead it’s triple camera array does things a bit differently.

Its triple camera rear setup includes a main 24-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture, 8-megapixel ultra wide and a 2-megapixel bokeh camera for helping add some depth to photos.

The Lite version of the P30 doesn’t feature any of the zooming wizardry or the periscope lens of the Pro model, which should hardly come as a surprise considering where this model sits in the lineup and the price tag.

The P30 Lite’s primary snapper is higher resolution than that of the Huawei P30. What it lacks however is optical image stabilization of any kind, and there’s also no 4K video support.

You’ve also got a 32-megapixel camera around the front for all the selfie addicts.

Huawei P30 Lite – Battery

Battery life has been a real strong point of the P30 variants but we doubt you’ll get the same kind of stamina here, with the 3340mAh cell, this has been making it through the day without too many issues.

Although this endurance might also be aided by the EMUI 9 software layered over Android 9, which boasts of loads of battery optimizations. Huawei offers a lot of optimization tools buried in the settings that limit background processes, turn off unused connectivity features, and alert you as to which apps are going rogue and eating into your battery.

The P30 Lite supports Huawei’s Quick Charge tech using an 18W charger. We were able to charge up the phone from flat in just over an hour and fifteen minutes, which isn’t that bad for a mid-range smartphone.

Conclusion

After Huawei’s suspension on future access to Android Play Store and security updates by Google, there are serious question marks over the future of Huawei and Honor phones.

The P30 Lite is the most affordable of the three P30-series smartphones, which should give it some appeal despite all this. Instead of cutting back across the board to hit its price target, Huawei has delivered an attractive industrial design and an above-average camera system, at the expense of screen technology and battery capacity. If you’re happy with these trade-offs, the Huawei P30 Lite is definitely a good buy.

MVXchange Closes Pre-seed Financing Round.

West Africa’s first online vessel chartering platform MVXchange has announced the closing of their pre-seed funding round. The financing round believed to be about
$100,000 was led by Oui Capital with participation by Neon Ventures, Zircon marine,
and other angel investors.

MVXchange is a B-2-B technology-driven maritime platform that matches vessel charter requests to available Offshore Support Vessels (OSV’s) operating in Africa. They are focused on empowering users to conveniently charter and manage offshore support vessels while reducing man-hours, saving cost and improving performance.

According to, co-founder and CEO of MVXchange- Tonye Membere, “we are building
the future of OSV chartering in Africa by reducing inefficiencies, increasing capacity and utilization of vessels across African waters and we’re happy to be working with our early investors. Their wealth of experience and network is a plus for us and we are excited to welcome them on-board”.

The funding will be directed towards scaling their technology and acquiring more enterprise users. The company’s current market is oil-producing African countries as they match vessel availability to vessel utilization at the optimal market rate in these regions. MVXchange is “reducing the time it takes to find a vessel from weeks to minutes”.

OPay launches bike hailing services ORide to become Nigeria’s super app

0

China’s WeChat allows users to do just about anything in China. The Tencent backed platform has over 900 million active users daily, powers over 806 million monthly users for WeChat Pay in 25 countries, sees 205 million connected calls every day and 68 million videos are posted every day.

The platform also has over 50 million active senior users and sees 38 billion messages sent every day and users sent 6.1 billion voice messages every day. Weixin as its favourably called in China is now a fully-fledged ecosystem offering chat, in-store payments for goods and services, food ordering and table reservation, fitness tracker and games.

Last year, Kenya’s Safaricom launched Bonga, to help make its mobile payment platform M-PESA a bit more social and more platform like. But it might take more time than expected to build such an ecosystem.

Opera, the guys who run the Opera browser and Opay and Okash, mobile wallet and mobile lending platforms respectively have launched a bike hailing platform dubbed ORide in Nigeria, as it mulls its Super App status on the continent.

OPay wants to be used for almost everything in Nigeria and loans were just a start. With the launch of ORide, the firm sits at the center of Africa’s most used transportation system, the motorcycle, which is also affordable compared to cars. The motorcycle makes Africa’s broken transport system accessible and has been used as a natural cure to traffic jams in Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya. In both Nairobi and Lagos, Traffic jams cost businesses millions of dollars each year and entrepreneurs want to solve that menace using motorcycles.

Though motorcycles and cars won’t help reduce traffic congestion, African cities are turning to motorcycles to evade traffic nonetheless and India is making a kill with its affordable $800 to $1200 motorcycles and tricycles.

Recently, Nigeria’s Gokada raised $5.3m Series A round to become the operating system of how cities function optimally and efficiently across Africa. The firm said it will use the funds to deploy its investment to expand its driver fleet, increase daily rides by 10 fold and acquire local tech talent. In addition, the company will explore new verticals for business growth. The new verticals mean it will venture into businesses such as loans, messaging, payments, insurance among others to be more like Asia’s super app GoJek.

GOJEK powers food ordering, transport, payments, shopping, hyper-local delivery among other services such as getting a massage. With more than 125 million app downloads, GOJEK has over 18 products and adds more services each year.

Nigeria’s Gokada, on the other hand, has around 1,000 motorcycles, has completed nearly one million rides since inception with combined app downloads of close to 200,000. This is the best time for it to venture into new verticals and the funding comes at an appropriate time.

According to Fahim Saleh, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Gokada, “Today’s announcement allows us to accelerate our growth projections significantly, as we continue to grow our market share and look to introduce more product features and services”.

Gokada’s rapid entry into Lagos’ transport market has been transformative said Nazar Yasin, Founder and Managing Partner at Rise Capital who added that the firm has noticed that some markets like Nigeria and Indonesia, which both have large populations and inadequate road infrastructure, are more likely to be dominated by motorcycle-hailing companies rather than traditional car-hailing players. Gojek is from Indonesia and Rise Capital is investing into Gokada to help it scale to become ”Africa’s Gojek”.

Opera also has both the resources and the technology to scale OPay into more services. Opera, the most popular mobile browser in Africa announced in May 2017, it would invest $100 million to facilitate the growth of African digital economy and maintain its number one position. The firm also said it was working with over 47 top tier African companies to integrate value-added services, mobile payment and data bundling into its browser.

“Africa is a very important market for Opera. Nine of the top 20 Opera Mini user countries are from Africa,” said Richard Monday, Vice President of Africa, Opera Software. “We aim to invest heavily in Africa, to build a local platform and grow with the local business partners. This platform will expand the user base for content providers, e-commerce businesses, operators, OEM’s and others to strengthen the African internet ecosystem.”

The Norway-based China owned firm promised it would add a new range of services to become a hub that will provide African users with great content and value added services as well as strengthen the internet ecosystem with local partners.

With operations in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, Opera quickly opened up offices in Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya to support its businesses. Then came the launch of OKash, an instant mobile loaning service in Kenya and now ORide in Nigeria.

ORide, will have to compete platforms such as MAX,UberBoda, Little Boda, TaxifyBoda, Safeboda, SafeMotos, BusyBoda, GetBoda in this markets. Opay, apart from its new ride hailing app ORide, is also allowing users to send and receive money to any bank in Nigeria, as well as set up mobile money agency businesses to generate more income. Opay has 20 Thousand Agents on its Mobile Money Platform.

Users can also order for food, purchase airtime for family or friends from any network within the OPay app and users can also pay for their electricity bills, GOTV, DSTV and STARTIMES subscription using OPay without any convenience fee.

Everything delivery startup Glovo is also reopening its operations in Egypt and is also setting up shop in Nigeria and Ghana in a few months after setting up successfully in Nairobi, Kenya. Glovo is banking on food delivery in Kenya then expand into other verticals. There is a high likelihood that Glovo Nigeria will also bank on food as its first primary product for its first few months of operation.

Glovo is not the latest platform to launch in the two-wheeler market. GoBEBA, an on-demand e-commerce logistics platform recently launched in Kenya with plans to disrupt the hyper-local on-demand logistics market in Kenya, and Rwanda’s Safemotos is hiring to launch in Kenya too.

Smaller players like Rush, BusyBoda, JuuBoda and GetBoda might not matter in this debate at this time but they are part of the entire last-mile delivery ecosystem that’s growing out of Africa and might build the continent’s fast real unicorn.

According to Peter Ndiang’ui, GoBEBA’s Founder and former OLX Kenya Country Manager, Africa’s growing young population and burgeoning middle class presents a huge opportunity for e-commerce and logistics companies but for logistics to gain widespread consumer adoption, the approach needs to be localized better than the current global players in the market.

“Urban consumers face a growing challenge of highly trafficked and crowded cities in a highly fragmented retail environment, making it difficult to access goods conveniently. With GoBEBA’s entry into the Kenyan market, we seek to address this challenge through technology by helping consumers discover and access goods from local retailers and Juakali artisans in a highly convenient way.  Furthermore, GoBEBA will enable small retailers and businesses to distribute goods in urban and peri-urban centres across the country.”

Peter is right. In Sub-Saharan Africa, consumption of goods is rising fast and is estimated to reach Ksh 200 trillion by 2025, as incomes grow and more people move into urban centers. These consumers and small businesses need multiple services from groceries, gas, parcels, food and drinks among others.

Platforms like ORide, MAX, Gokada and GoBEBA will allow users to access almost everything while owning nothing of their own by digitally connecting their on-demand logistics capabilities to suppliers and retailers across Africa.

GoBEBA is targeting to expand to other African countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana  and Ivory Coast after reaching a critical mass in East Africa.

M-Kula signs up over 360 outlets as firms run to take advantage of its tax-free lunch scheme

0

Apptivate Africa, a Kenyan based digital payment solutions firm launched an E-Lunch application in 2018 to help employers reinstate employee motivation through providing lunch.

Following various cases they have come across on employee turnover that is pegged on lack of motivation from their employers, a dreaded nightmare that most employers are yet to find lasting solutions for.

Apptivate Africa believes that, most employees at work are less motivated because apart from the paychecks, most employers concentrate on work delivery instead of having emphasis on their employee’s basics like food which is a necessity to make employees happy and more productive.

The M-Kula idea was handpicked from the Kenya Finance Act gazetted in 2015 which allows employers to spend Sh48, 000 annually on every employee’s lunch as tax-free income a voluntary scheme that is slowly gaining traction among corporate companies.

Apptivate charges every employer an average Sh3,600 shillings per month for every employee using the M-Kula App. Employers are allowed to choose on the payment plan and are permitted to pay up to Sh12, 000 per employee per month.

Nairobi based companies Tespok, Bean Interactive, Grant Thornton are among other firms that have signed their employees on the M-Kula App for their daily meals.  CEOs from both companies have undoubtedly confirmed that since the introduction of meals scheme, their employees have improved in productivity and also recorded positive energy from the deliveries they have made since then.

Cubist pharmaceuticals one of the companies that had incorporated lunch provision on the company daily schedule did a pilot test for 30 employees and they pointed out that the employees were productive and more energetic.

“Since the launch of the application, we have 110 companies, 360 merchants who have signed up and we have 7,000 transactions per day. With the application on, food lovers are guaranteed convenience as they will receive their food on time,” said Apptivate Africa CEO Neil Ribeiro.

Apptivate notes that, since the inception of the application, it has recorded there has been a growing number of signups from companies who are adopting the lunch provision concept.

As the company eyes expansion to larger markets, Neil Ribeiro urges more companies to take advantage of the tax-free lunch scheme inscribed in Kenyan laws to achieve shared growth with their employees.

“Employers are realising they need to provide more than a pay cheque to keep their teams motivated. Food is a basic human need, and a great way to get employees motivated and create an emotional connection between them and the company,” Added Ribeiro.

Currently, M-Kula has over 360 outlets, ranging from kiosks that serve meals between Sh100 to Sh300, restaurants that offer lunch from Sh200 to Sh400, various middle level food chains and high end food courts that charge between 300 and 1, 200 per plate served.

M-Kula also has partnerships with Jumia’s online eatery Jumia foods and K.tchen who deliver foods to offices within Nairobi. Additionally, there are over 30 caterers who dedicatedly prepare and deliver meals at offices. They charge between Sh100 to Sh600 per plate on average.

Apptivate anticipates that, through the lunch scheme, employers are likely to see improved productivity, high employees’ retention and as well as achieve as high as up to 150 per cent Returns of Investment (ROI).

In a 2014 study conducted by Eat Club, a food delivery service firm, it was established that, 54 per cent of employees are likely to stay with the company if free lunch is added to employees perks while 70 per cent are likely to recommend the firm to their friends.

In the study, it was also pointed out that, employees will improve focus by 46 per cent, happiness by 60 per cent and productivity by 49 per cent on average and indicator that, adopting the scheme by companies will be as solution to some of their daily employee turnover encounters.

Benefits of DDR4 RAM over DDR3

The RAM (Random access memory) is the most important resource of a system(Server) which allows in storing and transferring of data/information. Purchasing a Server RAM of high capacities that is demanded by your business needs will permits you to gain higher advantages in terms of performance, data access speeds, bandwidth etc. There are DDR, DDR2, DDR3 and DDR4 Server RAM modules available in the market. There are a lot of considerations one has to make while purchasing the RAM for your system and in fact, many would be often confused while picking up the right RAM needed for their systems by not knowing their features and benefits.

If you have been looking for new system or wanting to buy or build by yourself, you must be knowing about the DDR4 RAM which is currently new in the market. So as far now, the DDR3 RAM is still the go-to RAM and techies have been using the DDR3 RAM since a decade. But market is currently witnessing the introduction of DDR4 RAM and its extraordinary benefits.

Is it Worth to Upgrade to DDR4?

With almost new devices being out in the market every day, is it really worth to upgrade to DDR4 or is this new technology, an expensive one with quality performance? How different is the DDR4 RAM from its previous modules? These might still be the doubts hanging around the ones who are looking for a genuine memory upgrade.

In this article you will see the comparison of DDR4 and DDR3 Server RAM and there individual advantages and whether the newer technology really is better or not.

The Random access memory modules have been evolved greatly since the latest addition to the family of DRAM i.e. DDR4 RAM. DDR4 memory module is a more sophisticated and powerful DDR3 which was initially released in the year 2014. The main difference between the RAMs is that DDR4, increased speed, higher data transfer and efficiency, battery saving, reduced usage of power and allowance for add-ons.

Let us now know what exactly is DDR3 and DDR4 Server RAM and their advantages.

What is DDR3 RAM?

DDR3 RAM or Double data rate type three SDRAM is a type of SDRAM i.e. synchronous dynamic random-access memory with a higher bandwidth, duplex data rate interface and has been introduced in the year 2007. Compared to its successor DDR and DDR2 RAM, the DDR3 RAM has the higher speeds and data transfer rates. This DDR3 RAM is not forward or backward consonant with neither of the previous types of random-access memory modules by the cause of different signalling voltages, timings, and other relatable factors.

Advantages of DDR3 RAM

The real advantage of DDR3 Server RAM is its availability of higher bandwidth capacities. Unlike the previous RAM modules i.e. DDR, DDR2, the DDR3 RAM can outrage the best output result and out bring greater results working at a lower voltage. In addition to it, it can offer up to 1500 megabit per second of data transfer rates.

With the increase in bandwidth, this DDR3 memory technology reduces the use of power for up to 1.8 volts compared to DDR2 and thus resulting in the prolong battery life and because of this less power is consumed even when performing multiple tasks and running memory-intensive applications such as graphics editing etc.

The DDR3 RAM provides increased performance while costing less power voltage. It can be said that, the DDR3 RAM consumes less power energy than DDR2. For example, while DDR and DDR2 memory modules rely on 2.5 volts and 1.8 volts respectively, DDR3 uses only 1.5 volts.

The IT expects say that the DDR3 is the faster compared to the DDR and DDR2 memory modules. The systems that work on DDR3 RAM are generally the faster than those that lope on DDR2 RAM. Therefore it can be said that DDR3 memory is best suited for more-demanding and memory-intensive applications.

The DDR3 memory modules has cooler operating temperatures and also improved motherboard chipsets as compared to DDR and DDR2 memory.

What is DDR4 RAM?

The DDR4 memory module is an evolutionary memory module that provides great capacity, performance scalability, power efficiency, system-level reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). The DDR4 memory will provide significant benefits in terms of performance and power consumption. The two major improvements in DDR4 RAM are the lower power consumption and higher data transfer rates. The DDR4 works on only 1.2 volts while DDR3 generally requires 1.5 volts of power to operate which means the DDR4 module needs 20 percent less comparatively. Therefore, less power consumption means less heat produced and longer battery life.

Advantages of DDR4 RAM

The DDR4 module used higher-density chips so that each DIMM will constitute a lot of memory. For the high-end servers, up to 64 or even to 128GB of memory can be delivered by each DDR4 DIMM.

The DDR4 memory modules support deep power-cut off mode that permits the host device to go into the standby position without needing to refresh the memory. With this power-cut off mode, the power consumption is expected to reduce by up to 40-50 percent.

Less power consumption routes to less heat production and longer life span of battery, this indeed is the most beneficial factor for the system to bounce to DDR4 RAM. Now the systems can be engaged with higher memory and operate 24/7 and keep them functioning with on-board fans and out-board ventilation to calm them down.

DDR3 vs DDR4

DDR3 and DDR4 are the most recent generations of RAM modules that came into existence with reduced power consumption, higher data transfer rates and performance enhancements.

When DDR3 is compared to DDR4, DDR4 RAM offers higher data transfer rates and less power consumption levels that model it up to make it an ideal consideration for data centres [No-Follow Link] and servers.

Let us see some more differences between DDR4 and DDR3 and know how DDR4 is more beneficial than DDR3.

The high data transfer rates is a game changer and it is duty of the Server RAM to take care of this. DDR3 RAM have transfer rates of about 1333 and 2666 MT/s i.e. million transfers per second while DDR4 RAM have transfer rates of about 2133 and 3200 MT/s and this certainly prove that DDR4 is the best choice when it comes to speed and better functionality.

The reduction the power usage will fetch the business an absolute advantage. DDR4 RAM module is proven to consume lesser power energy when compared to the DDR3 and operates only on 1.05 volts while on the other hand DDR3 requires 1.5 volts and DDR2 operates on 1.8 volts. This is the drastic reduced power consumptions and thus saving up the battery lives of a really long time. DDR4 is the perfect choice when considering the reduction in power consumption.

The larger DIMM Capabilities will allow more complicated workloads to process easy. The chip densities of the DDR4 RAM is higher than compared to the chip densities of DDR3 RAM. The DDR3 have for up to 512 MB to 8 GB chip densities while DDR4 have up to 4GB to 16GB chip densities. The more the count of memory modules on the motherboard, the greater will be the capacity of the system to perform complex processes.

The expandable capabilities of the memory module will increase in the business potentials. DDR4 memory module permits the inclusion of multiple processors in addition to the existing processors which helps in boosting up the computational efficiency of the system and also results in increasing battery lifetime. Additional hardware can also be added when highly memory consuming processes are performed on the system while DDR3 do not favour such scenarios.

Conclusion:

Upgrading your system with DDR3 or DDR4 RAM actually depends upon what other hardware you are using now, and what hardware are you planning to use in the future. On comparing DDR4 with DDR3, the DDR4 memory module tends to show up the difference in physical changes with a great advantage, showcases better performance, higher clock speeds [No-Follow Link], data transfer rates, low operating voltage, stability and reliability features and high memory capacities.

The Server DDR4 memory is recommended if you own a new generation of CPU, it is not necessarily needed but for future proof and if you are configuring a new system or purchasing a new one then opting for DDR4 RAM is the best option. Both the RAM modules don’t vary much in terms of pricing. As the DDR4 memory module is the latest-in memory technology in the market and offers the best advantages over the DDR3 RAM while the price of it is almost similar to that of the price offered on DDR3. The DDR4 RAM was released in the year 2014 and since then it has gained the receptive pricing tag that DDR3 RAM had been enjoying for almost a decade. Off late, the price difference amongst the both is negligible.

5 Considerations When Putting Together Your Internet Marketing Strategy

The internet marketing space has come a long way since the early 2000s. The players range from stay-at-home parents to mega-corporations. With that big a crowd, having an effective marketing strategy is vital to achieving results when trying to get your message across.

A single tactic is no longer enough to make a difference. Having a holistic approach that is current with the landscape is the only way to move forward. Search engine and social media algorithms set the tone for what works.

In order to succeed in the internet marketing space, you need to follow the trends and tools that will help you build your brand while getting leads and sales. Let’s look at 5 considerations you need to keep in mind when putting together your internet marketing strategy.

1. SEO

Search engine optimization is absolutely necessary for placing your content in front of your target audience. You may have a useful message to present, but nobody will see it unless you provide your website with the ability to climb up the search result rankings as quickly as possible.

Most people in the space know the general guidelines regarding what is necessary for their website, but every year the focus falls on different pieces of the puzzle. Currently, you should be focusing on:

  • Providing a great user experience
  • Creating lots of up-to-date, high-quality content
  • Making sure you have a mobile ready website with blazing-fast page speed
  • Acquisition of natural links

2. PPC

Now that we’ve covered the free and organic way of increasing your content’s presence online, it’s time to look at the role pay-per-click advertising can have on your bottom line and how you need to approach PPC in 2019. Getting your website ranked with SEO can take as long as six months or a year, depending on how competitive your niche is. It’s important, therefore, to have the option of getting leads in the short term so as to keep your business profitable while you wait for your search engine optimization efforts to bear fruits.

If you are running PPC ads on a platform like Google, you need to be aware of the changes and developments that can determine the success of your campaign. Note the following considerations for your PPC strategy:

  • Focus on audiences, not keywords.
  • Apply artificial intelligence to enhance your results.
  • Use cross-channel advertising to create experiences using Braze alternatives.
  • Increase interactivity with ad messaging.
  • Use video ads for best conversion rates.
  • Take advantage of remarketing.
  • Learn about all the new ad types, extensions, and features.

3. Email Marketing

Email marketing is another aspect of your online efforts that are evolving to adapt to consumer trends. The key to staying relevant with your email marketing is to make use of the new technology while providing an optimal user experience. As with PPC ads, email marketing is seeing an increase in the use of artificial intelligence. More and more campaign strategy and implementation will be made by automated systems so that you can focus on other important aspects of your business.

Become well versed in the ways artificial intelligence can be applied to your email marketing. Don’t forget to retain a strong brand authenticity while keeping your marketing focused on your audience’s experience.

4. Direct Mail

The USPS recently reported that direct mail saw a 4 percent year-on-year increase in readership, while the Data and Marketing Association reported a year-on-year increase of 43 percent in customer response to direct mail. This is proof that not only is direct mail not going away but is actually an opportunity to be taken advantage of.

Keep your direct mail campaigns effective by laser targeting your audience. It used to hold true that direct mail was a method where you mailed out thousands of pieces and hoped for the best. Now, you can combine your online and offline methods by honing your target audiences. Use information from your online efforts to minimize your cost per mailing sent while maximizing sales.

An offer that resonates with the recipient, combined with a well-designed mailing, can help build a holistic marketing strategy which adds to your online actions. Make sure to have a strong call-to-action that your audience cannot resist.

5. Copy

Regardless of whether you are writing for a direct mailing, for your website, or for your PPC ads, your copy needs to be razor-sharp. You need to captivate your reader if you have any expectation of converting them into a customer. Here are some tips for maximizing the effectiveness of your copy.

  • Break your content down with the use of paragraphs and headers.
  • Use story-telling as a vehicle for building your brand.
  • Make use of captivating images where possible.

Creating an effective internet marketing strategy is all about putting in the focused effort and using the proper tools. There is a reason why out of millions of internet marketers only a small percentage succeed.

Can e-commerce be Africa’s economic goldmine?

Digital economy in Africa is snowballing, and in the process it’s creating new jobs and opportunities for digital entrepreneurs to explore a larger web market. Though e-commerce represents only 0.6% of all the transactions done in Africa, as compared to 12% in the USA and 20% in China; the budding nature of the industry does rightfully make one muse on the possibility, that e-commerce is indeed Africa’s economic goldmine.

Facilitation of Cross Border eTrade

The global market has shrunk to a large scale, and is now enabling billions of people to sell and purchase products across borders. This has been made possible by technological innovations that have birthed online marketplaces that enable e-trade between businesses (B2B), between consumers (C2C) and between businesses and consumers (B2C).

The opportunities presented by e-commerce are numerous. Africa is a massive market with a growing population of 1.28 billion people, a network of over 15 million SMEs and merchants, and a rising internet connection of 453 million users. Jumia, the leading pan-African e-commerce platform has been on the forefront of Africa’s cross border e-trade revolution. The marketplace is enabling about 81,000 active merchants across Africa, who sometimes source products from international markets, to capitalize on a huge €1.4 trillion consumer market opportunity in Africa.

While the milestone has been remarkable, Nicolas Martin, EVP – Marketplace & Logistics for Jumia, noted, at the 2019 UNCTAD’s Africa Ecommerce Week, that “more needed to be done to tailor bespoke regulatory solutions for Africa to attract international investment and create a conducive environment”. Good payment services are critical in curbing online fraud facingsellers. African governments also need to implement friendlier online taxation policies, to avoid locking out potential entrepreneurs and investors from exploring the ecommerce markets. Besides, while some marketplaces are creating sustainable logistics systems, the consistent success of cross border commerce will require further and deeper cooperation among stakeholders, both in the private and public sectors. “The power of the marketplace is huge, and the coordinated effort of millions will bring about the change we need in Africa,” added NicolasMartin.

Powering Employment in Africa

The World Bank reports an alarming rate of unemployed youths in Africa, accounting for about 60% of the unemployed workforce. Bearing in mind that the average age in Africa is 20 years, we need to rethink ways in which to power employment in a continent whose population is estimated to grow to 2.5 billion people by 2050.

Some policymakers are already hitting the nail on the head with the unemployment menace. Not long ago, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) released a mind-joggling report on how online marketplaces could create 3 million new jobs in Africa by 2025. According to the report, these ecommerce platforms, which match buyers and providers of goods and services, could also boost inclusive economic growth with minimal disruption to existing businesses and workforce norms.

For instance, Jumia, one of the case studies in the report, is already creating 5,000 direct jobs across the 14 African countries in which it operates. This is besides indirect jobs created with sellers, logistic partners, commercial agents, and marketing partners. Other positive economic impacts of online marketplaces in Africa include, increasing vendors’ income through surging demand for goods and services in locations currently beyond the reach of conventional retail networks. Furthermore, they are bringing more women and youth – who in some countries have been marginalized from the labor market – into the formal workforce.

Customers’ access to product choice

Choice, convenience and affordability are some of the top benefits customers get from e-commerce. From electronics, to fashion, cosmetics, FMCGs, travel and accommodation, online food delivery and payment options, customers are looking for variety and ease of access to their preferred products and services from a one-stop-shop. Ecommerce platforms provide customers with a pool of diverse sellers, that they would otherwise have no access to through offline channels. Notably, there exists low retail penetration rate in Africa, with 1 shop for every 67,000 people as compared to 1 shop for every 1,000 people in the USA.

Conclusion

E-commerce potential to boost Africa’s economy is undeniable. Yet, it’s effectiveness will require the development of the right skills across the various pillars of the industry, among them engineering, marketing, logistics and management. There needs to be an existing conducive environment for doing business at the countries’ level and in the continent at large. This will give both domestic and forein investors more confidence and encourage budding entrepreneurs to test the e-commerce waters in the continent. The ripple effect being, stronger economic growth!

Kenya’s BuuPass launches an online bus booking service for East Africa

0

Kenya’s BuuPass, a marketplace for bus, shuttle, and train bookings has today announced it has fully integrated M-PESA mobile payments as it unveils its online bus booking service after several months in pilot.

BuuPass, formerly MagicBus says the new online service will help travelers in the country to book and purchase bus tickets from five bus operators including Easy Coach, Modern Coast, Greenline, Palmers and East African Shuttles.

BuuPass looks to onboard more than 20 additional operators by the end of the year. Customers can also access the service by dialing *877# and at buupass.com with payments accepted through M-PESA.

BuuPass is not the first one to do this as BookNow tried it and failed but we hope it succeeds where others failed. BookNow struggled to amass volumes for its business as most of this bus companies have social media pages and websites with contact numbers and allow users to book for tickets on phone and pay via M-PESA. But BuuPass might have found a better way around this.

“This partnership with BuuPass seeks to extend the convenience of M-PESA by empowering our customers to book a bus ticket wherever they may be and at their luxury. We further see a prospect in linking bus companies to opportunities by providing them with a solution to manage customer ticketing and cashless payments,” said Rita Okuthe, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Safaricom.

Through the app, customers can select a bus operator, preferred travel date and time, and reserve specific seat numbers.  Customers can also reserve seats for multiple travelers, with tickets printed at the bus station after presentation of the confirmation SMS.

“We are glad to partner with Safaricom to provide travelers with an easy and flexible solution to book and manage their journey. Our platform similarly provides bus companies with a bus and parcel management system where they can manage their fleet, have control over their operational costs, and effectively reach more travelers and in turn sell more seats through our marketplace,” said Sonia Kabra, Co-founder and Director – BuuPass.

The service seeks a slice of the local inter-city transport industry estimated to be worth more than KES 100 billion annually but which is also characterized by low uptake of technology and digital solutions. The two firms have been working on the bus ticketing solution for more than a year and have already sold more than 80,000 tickets across more than 100 routes.

Some of the most popular destinations among travelers include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Migori and Bondo.

Safaricom and BuuPass have similarly partnered on the online booking platform for Standard Gauge Railway. This new partnership could not just be about a Lipa Na M-PESA and USSD feature as sources close to the deal say BuuPass has received an undisclosed seed funding from Safaricom’s SPARK Fund. BuuPass is not a new startup in the market but changed its name from Magic Bus Ticketing in order to be more locally relevant and name conflicted with another company.

Glovo signs up popular Simbisa brands as it pushes its Kenyan expansion

Glovo has signed up Simbisa Brand’s Pizza Inn, Chicken Inn, Creamy Inn and Galitos in Kenya.

Priscilla Muhiu, Glovo’s Head of Marketing for Sub Sahara Africa, said that the partnership will mostly benefit consumers of Glovo’s service and Simbisa’s products. “This partnership means a lot not only to us but also our customers. Glovo is constantly innovating thus we are always keen to onboard more outlets so as to improve the product offering we give to our customers based on their preferences,” said Mrs. Muhiu.

“Simbisa Brands operates a rich portfolio of food and eateries spread across different locations in Nairobi, and this partnership with Simbisa, therefore, will help us achieve our broader strategy of being a one-stop shop for all our customer needs and deliveries,” she added.

“Partnering with Glovo will facilitate an increase in our consumer base. We believe this will have an impact on the business and improve our service delivery as part of our quest to always satisfy consumer demands,” said Joseph Claver, Simbisa Brands’ Head of Business Development.

The app’s unique value proposition allows consumers to order virtually anything that can fit on the back of a motorbike for delivery. In Africa, Glovo currently operates in Kenya, Morocco and Cote d’Ivoire with plans to expand to Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

The Barcelona-based startup launched in Kenya, Ghana and Egypt but has since exited the Egyptian market to focus on Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru among others.

Glovo’s on-demand mobile application was founded in 2015 by Oscar Pierre and Sacha Michaud in Barcelona and has raised over 170 M Euros and is working with restaurants, grocery shops, super Markets, Gifts, Pharmacies, and Courier firms.

The platform’s features include geolocation, which allows customers to track their deliveries in real time and locate the nearest glover (courier), thus optimizing speed and distance.

Recently, Glovo shut down its operations in Egypt where it was operating in Cairo and Alexandria after less than a year of operations. Just like in Kenya, Glovo’s orders were 80 percent food deliveries and its biggest competition was local player Delivery Hero which owns a 16 percent stake in Glovo after an Italian deal.

According to sources, Glovo let go of its 40 plus employees in Egypt who were mostly working in customer care positions. Unlike Egypt, Kenya has no strong food delivery logistics platform as food ordering is not as high as other markets. Glovo also shut its operations in Chile and sources claim it might have been an agreement with its minority shareholder Delivery Hero which runs PedidosYa, a Chilean firm it acquired in 2014.

Though Glovo might not exit the Kenyan market soon, reaching a critical mass in the food delivery business in Nairobi alone will not sustain it and it will need years of toiling and will burn loads of cash to recruit users to turn revenue positive. However, it won’t be a surprise if Glovo quits the market after a year or two of operations.

Nairobi-based CarePay raises $45M in a Series A round to expand into Nigeria & Tanzania

Dutch-African mobile health payments firm CarePay International has raised $45 million growth capital in its Series A financing round to expand beyond Kenya into Tanzania and Nigeria, becoming one of the best funded start-ups in Africa.

The CarePay platform digitally connects health payers such as insurers, beneficiaries and healthcare providers on to one mobile platform, so that they can transact and communicate with each other in real-time. Due to the permanent connection to all stakeholders, making real-time payments becomes possible if required.

In the past 2 years, CarePay’s platform has connected 4 million lives and 1,200 healthcare providers in Kenya and Nigeria.

“The mobile phone allows you to reach everyone at almost no extra cost, this creates unprecedented opportunities for health insurance schemes”, says Onno Schellekens, CEO of CarePay International.

This round was raised from Dutch private equity funds IFHA-II and impact investor ELMA Investments, as well as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs that invested through the PharmAccess Group.

According to Max Coppoolse, IFHA-II’s Managing Partner, “The current health insurance model excludes huge parts of the African population as the administrative costs are too high, there is not enough data and outpatient costs cannot be controlled. CarePay’s mobile technology addresses all these elements and in addition offers cross-sale opportunities and other significant growth prospects for insurers.”

CarePay International launched its mobile health payments platform in late 2016 in Kenya in partnership with Safaricom, the operator of mobile money service M-PESA, which is considered to be one of the most successful mobile money services in the world and through which an estimated 40% of Kenyan GDP runs.

During launch, Bob Collymore, CEO of Safaricom, said “CarePay can do for healthcare inclusion what M-PESA has done for financial inclusion. It provides speed, accountability and massively simplifies the user payments experience.”

“Universal Health Coverage in Africa will only be possible if governments and their citizens can provide and access health services from both the public and private sectors through seamless and efficient mechanisms, CarePay brings that ambitious vision within the realm of possibility,” concluded Tom McPartland, a Board member of ELMA Investments.

Zipline raises additional funding to expand in Rwanda and into Ghana

With the new funding, Zipline’s operations in both Ghana and Rwanda will increase the number of health facilities the company serves by almost 100 times.

The Rise Fund, a global impact investment fund managed by TPG Growth, today announced its investment in Zipline. Zipline is the world’s leading provider of next-generation, precision drone delivery for healthcare services, which is combined with market-leading cold-chain inventory management and software-driven automation of the delivery process. Zipline’s technology creates on-demand healthcare response that saves lives and expands access to healthcare around the globe.

Launched in Rwanda in October of 2016, Zipline uses drones to rapidly deliver vital medical supplies. Health workers are able place orders by text message and receive their deliveries in 30 minutes on average. Zipline’s drones take off and land from Zipline’s distribution centers, requiring no additional infrastructure at the clinics it serves. In addition to its impact on lifesaving emergencies, Zipline’s just-in-time drone delivery service has also helped transform the medical supply chain, including ensuring that hospitals have consistent access to blood products.

“Zipline is not just a drone company, but rather a transformative technology business using next-generation logistical solutions to provide lifesaving services. We are thrilled to be partnering with Keller and his team as they bring vital healthcare provisioning to markets all over the world,” said Mike Stone, Chief Investment Officer of The Rise Fund. “Zipline is a compelling example of what we search for with The Rise Fund: companies helping to solve our world’s most complex societal problems.”

The expansion of Zipline’s operations in both Ghana and Rwanda will increase the number of

health facilities the company serves by almost 100 times. In the last six months, Zipline has gone from a single distribution center in one country, delivering blood to 21 hospitals, to operating six distribution centers in two countries, delivering more than 170 different vaccines, blood products, and medications to 2,500 health facilities serving close to 22 million people.

This investment builds on The Rise Fund’s existing track record both in the healthcare and technology sectors, including investments in Viewpoint Therapeutics, RefleXion, C3, and others. The Rise Fund also has extensive experience investing in companies based in or with ties to Africa. In 2018, The Rise Fund invested in Kenyan digital payments company Cellulant; Botswana-based ecotourism group Wilderness Safaris; Nigerian fintech start-up Mines.IO; and emerging markets healthcare IoT / data platform SystemOne.

5 terrific tech items you need to pack

Travelling for business can be stressful, but in our global economy it’s becoming increasingly necessary.

However, there are some great gadgets out there that can help make business trips more blissful.

For those of you flying from Newcastle to elsewhere in New South Wales or further afield, here are five terrific tech items you need to pack.

  1. Power bank

Business travel often involves working on the move, so there’s nothing worse than your battery dying on your phone or laptop when you’ve got important documents that you need to access.

So pack a power bank that you can use to keep your electrical devices powered. This way, you’ll be able to use them whenever necessary and it’s the perfect excuse to head outside and enjoy your new surroundings while you work.

  1. Portable Wi-Fi router

While it’s great to be able to charge your electronics outdoors, it’s even better if you can stay connected to the internet on the move too.

So investing in a portable wi-fi router is therefore a great idea – it’s a back-up in case of unreliable hotel wi-fi and allows you to work from wherever you want, which means you can go out and see your exciting new city rather than being cooped up in your hotel.

  1. Headphones

A good pair of noise cancelling headphones are a must during business travel. They’ll enable you to block out screaming children, airport crowds and other distractions, so that you can focus on business prep.

With a nice pair of headphones, you’ll be able to listen to your favourite groups or some relaxation music, both of which will help you get into right headspace for good business.

Techradar has some savvy advice on the best noise-cancelling headphones for 2019 – check it out.

  1. Tablet

The portability and functionality of a tablet make it an ideal travel item, especially on the plane where space is limited.

It enables you to save your business reports and other important documents and access them while you travel to ensure you’re up to speed when you arrive.

A tablet is a great entertainment device too, so when you need a break for work, you can use it to play games, watch films and listen to music.

  1. Mini projector

With a mini projector to hand, you’ll be able to practice for your business meeting or presentation from the comfort of your hotel room. And when you’re done, you can use it to watch a film and get yourself relaxed and ready for your business dealings.

With all that wonderful travel tech packed in your luggage, the last thing you want is to risk it getting damaged on cramped and crowded public transport, so drive to the airport instead.

You can find Newcastle Airport parking on Looking4.com, then cruise to the airport worry-free, fully focused on business.

What are your favourite tech items for business travel? Share them in the comments section.

Manage Your Time to Manage Stress

We all live in the high-paced world, where we must balance our responsibilities as a professional, a parent, a spouse and so on and so forth. There is so much daily routine to be done, so many tasks to be accomplished. We always rush somewhere. There is always some fuss. Living in such a rhythm can lead to burning out. You feel that something must be done with all that stuff. You, probably, are stressed out. Don’t panic! There is a way out! And we’ll provide you with some information and some tips on how to succeed.

The first thing you should know is what stress and its symptoms look like.

Stress and Its Symptoms

According to Wikipedia, stress is a body response to factors like environmental conditions, danger, challenges or physical and psychological disadvantage. Stress can affect memory functions, the immune system, metabolism and can lead to diseases.

The main symptoms of stress are:

  • problems with health (headaches, heartbeat, muscle tension, frequent colds, acne);
  • lack of energy, insomnia;
  • changes in appetite;
  • irritability;
  • nervous habits;
  • depression.

If you want to check your stress level, there are a lot of specific tests. Many people don’t realize they have problems unless they experience body reactions to stress. So, it’s a good idea to take those tests in advance in order to prevent illnesses.

There is a huge amount of things which can create stress. But one stands out and is familiar to everybody. It is lack of time. You must do lots of things at home, at work and need to perform them in time. But, unfortunately, a day only has 24 hours. What is to be done to solve this problem? Time management is the response!

Time Management and Its Influence on Your Life

Time management is a set of techniques allowing you to be more productive and use your time more effectively. If you take its techniques into consideration, you’ll certainly:

  • maximize your efficiency;
  • stop fussing and worrying;
  • take things under control;
  • stay calmer and healthier;
  • get enough rest.

It is a brilliant invention, which makes life easier and more enjoyable.

Here are some time management steps; follow them, and you’ll reduce your stress level.

  1. Prioritize your deals. You have to plan what goes first. For this reason, make a list with your must-dos, where the most important things are on the top.
  2. Create a realistic timetable. Don’t plan too much for a certain period of time. Set approachable goals.
  3. Don’t switch to another task until you finish the current one. Although, you can combine similar matters.
  4. Delegate your duties. Don’t try to do all the work by yourself if you don’t have to. If you can share your responsibilities, just do it!
  5. Organize your workplace properly. Don’t make a mess! This simple step will let you save a lot of time and nerve, especially when you’re in a hurry.
  6. Don’t waste your time. There are lots of temptations, but try not to distract if you are involved in the process. Later you’ll have a break and gratify yourself!
  7. Take breaks and vacations. It’s vital! If you stay without rest for a long time, you’ll soon burn out!
  8. Time for work and time for family. Separate work and family. If you are at work, immerse yourself into doing your duties. But if you are at home, devote time to your nearest and dearest.
  9. Do simple things to reduce stress or ease tense. Get enough sleep (not less than 8 hours), eat right (cut down fast food), do sports or exercise, enjoy nature, spend time with friends and family, find some time for a hobby.

Be careful with time wasters! Try to eliminate them from your schedule and workplace. These wasters steal your precious time. They are:

  • Devices which you don’t use for work. Put them away until you finish;
  • Social networks. Don’t chat, post and so on while working;
  • Never-ending chatting. Just stop chatting and do your business!
  • Meetings and discussions. Try to be very specific during them.

As you can see, time management tips are quite simple to apply. You can use them at work and at home. It’s a great idea to adopt them while you are looking for a job. By the way, job sitehttps://uk.jobsora.com will help you reduce stress and save time as it offers a huge amount of options for job hunters.

Make your progress with our tips! Good luck!

Invest in the US Real Estate market with Cashestate

Investing in real estate in Nigeria is fraught with a lot of challenges. The Nigerian economy has been unpredictable for more than half a decade, there are many loopholes and red tapes to go through to get started in real estate investing. There’s also the ever-looming uncertainty of getting swindled.

Eleanya Eke has always tried to solve global investment problems and make it easy for Nigerians to get in on the international market. His previous startup BuyCoins(launched with Ire Aderinokun and Timi Ajiboye), enabled Nigerians to invest in cryptocurrencies seamlessly from their naira bank accounts.

His new venture Cashestate, aims to do the same for Nigerians looking to diversify their investments into the global real estate market. Cashestate is essentially a crowdfunding platform for real estate investments in the US. Eke has spent the last 7 years working in the US financial services and consulting industry in a wide range of capacities. He has teamed up with Bosun Olanrewaju and Damilola Lawal who are co-founders of the company. Bosun brings years of software engineering experience to the team and serves as its Product Lead while Damilola brings experience in research, corporate finance and strategy with stints at Vetiva Capital Management and CardinalStone Partners Limited. He serves as the company’s Operations Lead.

To invest with Cashestate, investors deposit a minimum investment of $1000 or can pay the same amount in instalments of $100. Cashestate’s team identifies low-cost properties in high demand areas in the US and purchases them in the investor’s name. The investor receives returns via rental cash flow and property gains over time. The current interest rate on investment hovers between 10% and 12.5% annually while the minimum holding period on the platform is one year. The company advises three to five-year holdings and even longer for the best investments results.

When compared with Nigerian investments and adjusting for inflation, Cashestate’s portfolio has outperformed most naira denominated investments, mostly due to the strong performance of private real estate in the US as well as the advantage of being held in dollars which is a stronger store of long-term value.

To ensure investments are secure, Cashestate invests via a special investment utility vehicle. All property purchases are also 100% insured against the worst case scenarios. The platform also provides all the required information, returns, legal titles and other documents within its dashboard.

Eke says Cashestate will first solve the problem of connecting Nigerians to the real estate market in the United States and will be expanding to other countries soon.

Samsung Sero: The vertical TV Samsung thinks millennials and the Snapchat generation need

0

At a press event in Seoul this week, Samsung unveiled its latest slate of lifestyle TVs and the surprise was that the firm is set to release the world’s first vertical television designed for social media-addicted millennials.

Samsung’s new TV named Sero is a 43″ flat screen with a rotating display and a pivoting screen. The screen pivots from a horizontal to a vertical mode, allowing viewers to watch content on their TV in same way as they do on smartphone apps. Sero’s screen is meant to show off Instagram and Snapchat stories, or TikTok videos for that matter, vertically.

According to Samsung, this makes it easier for users to sync their smartphones to the TV and play games, scroll through social media or watch videos on the big screen via an NFC connection. Sero TV was also pitched as a solution for big-screen mobile gaming and group shopping.

Rotated back horizontally, the Sero TV can be used as a regular 43-inch TV screen. It also features a 4.1-channel, 60-watt speaker, and an integrated far-field microphone for access to Samsung’s Bixby smart assistant.

This isn’t the first time that the South Korean tech giant has come up with experimental and unusual TV designs. In 2017, it showed off a TV with a wooden frame that is designed to display artwork and look more like a painting when not in use.

And in January this year at the CES tech trade show in Las Vegas, the firm unveiled a 75in (190cm) television, “The Wall” made of modular micro LED panels that can be locked together to expand or reduce the size of the screen.

There’s no word on whether Samsung plans to bring the Sero to African markets, but the TV is going to be available in South Korea at the end of May for a price of about $1600. Now that the TV is aimed at millennials, $1600 is quite a hefty price-tag that is likely to put many consumers off.

This is How You Make Dissertation Writing Easier

0

When you write a dissertation you know that you are at the important point of your educational journey. This is the perfect way to showcase your skills and to write an original scientific piece. Here are the tips on how to make your dissertation writing process easier.
1. Choose the Right Topic
The best scenario is choosing a topic that is both interesting and you know a lot about it. It’s also important to choose a unique topic so that you have your own research findings and conclusions. Avoid selecting a very broad topic that as it will be difficult to draw a conclusion. It is also important not to select the topic that is too narrow as you will find hard to draw well-founded conclusions. Research is the best solution to find the right topic. Collect the resources and make sure you have enough references to write your dissertation.
2. Write an Attractive Proposal
A dissertation proposal is written to provide more general information about your dissertation. It lets students, readers or your instructor see what the dissertation is all about, the methodology used and what results will be obtained by it. This is the first draft which helps you get the advice from your instructor to avoid basic mistakes in your final writing. The proposal allows you to set the goals and reach them through your writing.
The structure of the proposal contains Introduction, Review of the literature, Methodology, Research Findings and Conclusion. An introduction generally includes the background of the topic, thesis statements, and questions that you’re going to answer in the proposal. The review of literature contains the sources you’re going to use in the proposal. The methodology includes data analysis and questions. Research findings are the objectives that are proved. Lastly, the conclusion contains a summary of your dissertation proposal.
3. Write a Compelling Dissertation
Before writing your dissertation, make an outline. You already have the dissertation proposal but it isn’t always sufficient as most of the professors want an in-depth outline. Start with the introduction and make the purpose of your findings clear as well as the research questions. You also want to offer clear definitions associated with your undertaking along with assumptions and expectations. If you’re having an issue writing the dissertation you can take help from the best dissertation writing service. Or visit your instructor, maybe he or she can help you if you are stuck.
In the methodology, you want to focus on the resources and their implementations. If you want to create a quality dissertation you should have the studies questions, information series, and analysis. You always need to have a conclusion to provide an explanation for your findings and explain why the precise statement is true. Finally, you have to cite the resources.
4. Proofread like Pro
Provide yourself ample time after writing the dissertation. Check the overall structure and make sure your introduction is summarizing what you have done and there is a logical progression of sections. There should be the right flow for your writing. Check headings and subheadings and other content formatting. You should also check for the consistency and style of the dissertation. Don’t forget to proofread for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If you’re using acronyms or abbreviations, check whether they are making the proper sense. Avoid plagiarism and make sure you use the original content.
Your dissertation should be easy to read and understand (on the university level); make sure you don’t overcomplicate it with unnecessary difficult words and definitions. Also make sure you use transition, emotional, powerful, common and uncommon words. Remember to proofread it at least 2-3 times to fix all the errors as your all effort will go in vain if the dissertation contains errors.
5. Take Feedback
To get a better response and write the winning dissertation, you need to take the feedback from your instructor so that there is a scope of correcting the mistakes. You can also take the help of your friend or colleague who has knowledge of the dissertation writing. Ask about their suggestions and opinions to improve writing.
Tackle the project by following step by step process to make it easier to write the dissertation.

Huawei P30 Pro vs. Samsung Galaxy S10+ : Two phones, ten cameras & Headphone jack wars

0

What seemed extravagant and almost excessive a year ago, is practically the norm now.  We say that because last year’s Huawei P20 Pro wowed with three rear cameras on the back.

This year, Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and S10+ share three cameras on the back and two on the front. Huawei tops it with four, one of which is a 3D camera designed to improve portrait photos.

Huawei P30 Pro

  • 40-megapixel “SuperSpectrum” lens
  • 20-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens
  • 8-megapixel 5x optical periscope zoom lens
  • Time-of-flight (TOF) sensor to measure distance
  • Front-facing camera: 32 megapixels

Galaxy S10 Plus:

  • 12-megapixel wide-angle lens
  • 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens
  • 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x zoom
  • Front-facing camera: 10 and 8 megapixels

The Galaxy S10+ (and the Galaxy S10 family in general) have received a ton of attention in recent months, and with good reason. However, the arrival of the Huawei P30 Pro did steal some of the limelight. The two android smartphones share many of the same features: water resistance with IP68 certification, wireless charging, reversible charging, Android Pie, an octa-core processor, five cameras in total, a curved OLED screen and a metal frame.

However, despite those similarities, each phone is in great ways different to the other. In some ways, the Huawei P30 Pro might actually be better, while in some the Samsung Galaxy S10+ could be the better phone.

Conclusion

Samsung and Huawei both offer premium, well-built and striking designs with flagship specifications, especially in the case of the P30 Pro and Galaxy S10+.

The P30 Pro is the one to buy out of the two Huawei devices launched under the P30 series, if your budget allows. It has a curved display, faster charging, a larger battery, bigger display, more camera functionality and even offers reverse wireless charging, compared to it’s junior the Huawei P30.

The S10+ is the one to opt for out of the S10 series devices, for those after the latest and greatest specs at least. It has a larger display than the S10 and the S10e, a bigger battery, more camera functionality on the front and more RAM and storage options.

Although which smartphone of the two to opt for will come down to personal preference. The devices are similar in terms of specs on paper, though the Huawei P30 Pro is that little bit cheaper compared to the Samsung Galaxy S10+– read our full reviews for all the details.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ Hands-On Review: Marking a decade of Samsung’s Galaxy Series

0

Did you know that this year, 2019 marked a decade of Samsung’s Galaxy Series? Coming into the year the pressure to give something great and innovative from Samsung was quite high. Samsung’s flagship smartphones have always been among the best looking Android devices out there, and the recently launched Galaxy S10e (Review), S10 and S10+ are no exceptions.

In fact, in many ways they build upon the successes of their predecessors, and improve upon many of their drawbacks. I’ve been using the Galaxy S10+ as my daily driver for well over a week now. The device is both mind-blowing and revolutionary. It may not be perfect, but there’s something so satisfying about a product that’s well thought out and done right, and excellent in every aspect and angle.

The official color of our review unit is Prism White, and it has this pearlescent quality to it which changes from an iridescent blue to pink depending on the light. It’s really beautiful.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ Review: Price, Design and Display

Price

Painfully so but the truth which needs to be said, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is butt clenchingly expensive, Kes. 105,999/- ($1,059).
To cast those prices in a more positive light, they are more reasonable overall than what Apple is asking for its iPhone Xs Max ($1,099 for 64GB, $1,249 for 256GB and $1,449 for the 512GB) and you do get a more generous allocation of storage for that money. (You can check out our comparison between the S10+ and XS Max to see more on what we are talking about.)

Where Samsung gets into trouble, however, is when you start looking at the rest of the opposition. Like the recently launched Huawei P30 Pro which is probably the closest comparison in the Kenyan market at the moment. It has has four cameras on the rear and a 6.47in display. The big difference is that it’s cost is a mere Kes. 99,999/- ($1000). And if you compare them further to the smaller variants, Samsung Galaxy S10e which is Kes. 78,999/- as compared to the Huawei P30 Lite which is just Kes. 29,999/-.

There’s a S10 Plus variant that Samsung calls the ‘Ultimate Performance Edition’. It packs in a mammoth 12GB of RAM and huge 1TB of storage, and comes with an equally monstrous price tag of $1,599.

Although this special-edition variant isn’t widely available through retailers, you may need to do a little bit of hunting to find it e.g. ordering it directly from Samsung’s website.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus isn’t the prettiest smartphone I’ve ever laid eyes on but there’s a pleasing sense of symmetry to the horizontally-arranged triple camera array on the rear that was sorely lacking on the Samsung Galaxy S9+. There’s also a neat elegance to the dual hole-punch camera on the front.

The phone is available in a variety of different finishes, all of which look pretty good to my eye. There are four of the prism colours to choose from – white, green, blue and black; each of which has an attractive pearlescent appearance. There are also two ceramic-backed models in white and black. We have the prism white model as a review unit, although it won’t be to everyone’s taste, I like the way it picks up a bluish pink to orange glow when light reflects off it.

There is a host of elegant touches that elevate the S10+ above the competition. I particularly like the animated “snake” that chases its tail around the perimeter of the hole-punch camera to indicate it’s looking for a face to unlock itself with.

On the Samsung Galaxy S10+, there’s a glass front and a glass back. The long edges of both glass panels curve to meet a shiny metal band around the sides. The display curves along with the glass panel, distorting the edges of the screen somewhat. Like most glass backs, if you’ve got greasy or sweaty palms, the rear panel is a huge fingerprint magnet that gets slimy pretty much the second you take it out of the box. I briefly considered photographing it while wearing silk gloves just to keep it all shiny and clean.

Measuring 6.2 x 2.91 x 0.3 inches and weighing 6.17 ounces, the Galaxy S10 Plus is not a one-handed phone, at least not for me. I had to shift the device in my hand as tried to reach the Recent Apps button on the left side with my thumb. But you can engage one-handed mode by swiping diagonally up and to the left from the bottom right of the screen.

There’s a slightly bigger issue with the design, the power button is so high up on the phone and the curve on the display which is not a new problem. Since the screen is curved and it goes from edge to edge I accidentally pressed things i didn’t mean to press as I was simply holding the device.

Along the sides there’s not much change from past models. The bottom still has a USB-C port, along with a bottom-firing speaker teaming up with the earpiece for stereo sound. There’s still a Bixby-launching hardware button, combo SIM card, and MicroSD slot.

On the bottom of the Galaxy S10+, there is still a headphone jack (Thank Heavens!), which makes it one of the only flagship smartphones still packing the universally compatible analog audio port. This is a good thing because it spares headphone-jack users from a lifetime of misplaced dongles and the choice between charging and listening to music. I don’t know about you but I am grateful to Samsung for keeping this port.

Display

The Galaxy S10+ measures 6.4in across the diagonal, has an aspect ratio of 19:9 and uses AMOLED tech to ensure effectively perfect contrast.
The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus makes this the biggest S phone screen to date. It’s resolution is 3,040 x 1,440 but the phone comes set to display in 1,080 x 2,280 by default, which is a setting I’d recommend leaving it in for optimum performance and battery life.

Samsung has found a way to fit more pixels across a tighter body. This also means a reduction in the size of the already-slender bezels above and below the display with its 93.1% screen-to-body ratio.

Many manufacturers have been using a display with a notch cut out of it to house components such as the selfie cameras, but Samsung is taking a slightly different approach and cutting a camera hole right out of the display.
Samsung has drilled a hole into it. Dubbed, the “Infinity O”. This cut-out is technically very impressive, and its position in the top-right corner means it looks neater than the centrally-located notch.

This ‘punch-hole’ display on Samsung’s biggest phone includes two front-facing cameras. The second RGB camera is used to take better portrait selfies than the single-lens front-facing Galaxy S10 and S10e cameras. This means the punch-hole on the S10+ takes up a little more space than on other handsets.

The unique aspect of the hole punch design over a notch is that you get pixels all the way around the camera cutout. Samsung uses this for one unique flare: if you switch to the front camera in the camera app, you’ll get a quick swirl of white pixels around the camera hole (That’s the snake i’d spoken about earlier that’s chasing it’s own tail) . Third-party apps have come up with all sorts of cute uses for the camera. There are already some sites and apps dedicated to cleverly hiding or highlighting the hole punch with various wallpaper designs. There are even apps that wrap a battery indicator or a notification ring around the hole punch.

Samsung’s fingerprint sensor returns to the front of its flagships, but this time it’s embedded under the glass of the display, thanks to Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint technology. The ultrasonic technology also means the sensor will continue to work even if your finger, or the screen, is wet or cold. A downside to the fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy S10+ is speed. Unfortunately, it’s not as quick to recognize your print as optical readers located outside of a display.
The displays also have improved blue light control Samsung claims reduces eye strain by 42 percent.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus review: Software, Hardware and Battery

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
  • 8GB – 12GB of RAM
  • 128GB – 1TB storage
  • 4,100mAh battery
  • Headphone jack
  • Wireless charging
  • IP68 water and dust resistance

The Galaxy S10 ships with Android 9 Pie and Samsung’s Android skin, formerly called “TouchWiz,” then “Samsung Experience,” and now dubbed “One UI.” This has to be the best software Samsung has ever put on any of its smartphones. I say that because it’s packed with nice little details. This is from the animated highlighting that surrounds the front-facing camera momentarily when you switch to the front-facing camera or when using face unlock, to the sheer customisability of much of the interface.

Samsung has revamped its UI along with the release of Android 9 Pie, and it seems like Samsung has made some progress with putting controls in reachable areas.
A change I noticed immediately is that many of Samsung’s apps put tabs at the bottom. For apps like the clock, phone, messages, and Galaxy Store, the tabs at the bottom make it easy to switch sections.

Another up-and-coming Android trend that Samsung is ahead on is a working, system-wide dark mode. The dark mode works in plenty of places on the S10, changing to a white-text-on-dark background for the settings, notifications, and numerous built-in apps like the clock, phone, messages, and more.

Samsung’s One UI is not only clever, it also has a cleaner look than previous generations of Samsung’s phone UI and a sense of immediacy and snappiness that makes the phone feel as good as it looks. It even makes it possible to adjust the intensity of vibrations at different levels for calls, notifications and touch interactions.

Although, Samsung remains insistent on pre-installing its own version of apps that Google has perfectly good software for. For instance, Samsung’s email, calendar, web browser and gallery. A downer for me was that, after transferring software across, I had to dig around in the settings to organise the app drawer alphabetically because the app icons were scattered around all over the place. Not all of you will relate to this, but if you know the need for order, you’ll understand my frustration.

Gesture control is present too, letting you ditch the typical on-screen navigation keys for a series of swipes.

From a hardware perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is one of the first with Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 855 chipset, it rocks 8GB of RAM (with options up to a whopping 12GB), and storage starts at 128GB with options up to a full terabyte. The battery is even bigger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 9’s, with a capacity of 4,100mAh.

This battery is life. I no longer have to worry about having a powerbank or a charger always at hand! It’s not just the 4100 mAh module that gives this smartphone fantastic battery life, but also the new SoC and the AI help and software optimization it provides. This is a phone that has comfortably made it through a day of hard use with room to spare. I’ve not yet had to top up the charge before bedtime on most nights.
Although, Samsung may have improved battery life but forgot to do the same for its fast charging technology. It once again supports up to 18W of power.

That extra battery comes in handy thanks to a new feature called Wireless PowerShare that allows owners to top-up any device capable of wireless charging using the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. The new feature is enabled in the settings, then you simply flip over the phone and place any Qi-compatible gadget on the case to start charging.

Samsung’s reverse wireless charging seems easier to set up than Huawei’s, and while its ultrasonic behind-the-glass sensor takes getting used to, and isn’t flawless, it’s better than all of the optical sensors out there.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus review: Cameras

The 2019 trend on cameras looks to me focused on having a lot of cameras on smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S10+ has not been left behind on that as it has five, to be precise, with three on the rear and two on the front.

On the front, you have a 10MP selfie camera and an 8MP RGB depth camera. The Galaxy S10 Plus, which is the only model in the S10 range with dual front-facing cameras, is the only device capable of shooting Live Focus selfies. These photographs add an adjustable, artificial bokeh-style blur to the background behind the subject.

Selfie taken using the live focus’ colour point tool.

Samsung has also added a number of extra effects to its Live Focus feature this year “Colour Point”. The feature turns the background greyscale so that only the subject is left in colour, while “Zoom Bokeh” and “Spin Bokeh” make it look like you’re racing towards the camera or speeding around on a roundabout, respectively.
Colour Point” has easily become my favorite and produces some really nice shots and could make for a fun Instagram post.

On the back, you have a main 12MP sensor with an aperture that can shift between f/1.5 for night shots and f/2.4 for the day. a 12MP 2x telephoto, and a 16MP wide-angle camera which offers a field of view of 123 degrees. Of the three, it’s the ultra-wide sensor that’s the new addition.

I really like the versatility these cameras offer, giving you numerous options for creative shots in multiple situations. For instance, the wide is great for landscapes, while the tele is ideal for sporting events, when you want to get closer to the action. Photos from the ultrawide and tele cameras are superb, and I’ve found myself experimenting far more with shots I wouldn’t usually take.

Samsung has expanded the range of scenarios that its scene optimizer is able to recognize on the S10+, reaching a total of 30 scenarios. Digging through the settings you can also find the Bright Night mode that was mentioned multiple times in leaks of the camera app. It should improve performance automatically in low light conditions.

For video capabilities, which is another area where the S10 Plus excels. It’s able not only to shoot stabilised footage in 4K resolution at 60fps but also capture HDR10+ clips for video with improved dynamic range and ultra slow-motion footage, as well.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus review: Is it worth buying?

The Samsung Galaxy S10+ is not only an elegant and well-considered design; a thing you actively want to pick up, to physically touch and hold – but it’s also a phone that begs to be used. From the camera interface to simple and easy-to-understand settings menu, the S10 Plus is, quite simply, a joy to use.

This year the Galaxy S10+ has one more camera than the previous generation. The camera is undeniably good. Not perfect or the best, but good for both stills and video The display is sumptuous, the battery life impressive in its longevity and the performance as quick as a demanding modern smartphone user and gaming addict could possibly require.
Wireless PowerShare is also a handy addition and means you can help-out a friend in need who has forgotten to pack an external battery pack and USB charging cable on a night-out.

Another great thing is that Samsung has seen fit to cling on to those critical, old-school features users love: the 3.5mm jack, dual-SIM and storage expansion capabilities. The one and only critical stumbling block for the Samsung Galaxy S10+ is the price. As I’ve pointed out, is so much more expensive than it’s rivals in the Kenyan market, like the Huawei P30 Pro.
But if you are a die-hard Samsung fan and can afford it, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ is something you can consider getting.

Meet Nigerian company putting trust behind low cost banking

TechMoran held a chat with Alao Tope, founder of AMW Nigeria, a company that
allows low income and middle class Nigerians access basic financial services, such
as cash deposit and withdrawals, through it low cost kiosks. Currently, the
company serve more than 10,000 customers every month across 3 states and has a
monthly turnover north of 16 million naira, not bad for a company that started just
a year ago.

Tell us the story of WHAT BROUGHT about AMW as a company
AMW was actually not meant to be a company. It was birth as a result of hunger.
Because then I had just finished my NYSC and having spent a lot of my savings on
my previous startup that did not work, I had to find a means to survive. Because I
made a deal with my Mum not to give me a penny after my NYSC days. So I had
to look for a means to survive. And my initial idea was to start a print shop arounda famous University campus. But after realizing how crowded the market was, I
had to think of something else. During this period, I had to visit my brother in his
University and that was where I got the idea for AMW.

You started a year ago, tell us how big the company is today?
We now have 10 outlets across 3 states, majorly in semi urban areas. And we have
16 employees on our payroll. We currently have 40% profit margin which is rare
for a company of our size. And we now have franchisees who are currently using
our systems. Because it works.

Who are your target customers?
Our customers are low income and middle class Nigerians whose aim is to
withdraw or deposit little amount, usually below N20,000, from or into their bank
account. We currently have most of our outlets in semi urban areas and we
currently serve more than 10,000 customers.

I understand that you have a franchise structure, how does it work?
Our franchise structure is a way to support our rapid growth plan as a company.
With a Total franchise plan, a franchisee can get to own an AMW outlet, run by AMW while they get a return typically every month. It cost about N300,000 to own a franchise and the return are very attractive. And I am glad to let you know that we are the only company in the space with a franchise structure and we are proud of that.

How has AMW been funded till this point? Have you had investments, or it
has always been bootstrapped?

Starting from the time I started with just N30,000, I had saved from my NYSC
days, we have since raised over N3million up to date.

Competitions are inevitable in most business spaces. Tell us how you’ve been able to deal.
Yes, we have other companies trying to do what we do, but most of them take a
different approach. But we understand at AMW is that handling money for people
requires trust and that is our competitive strength. We make sure that our
operations are transparent from day one. And our outlets are carefully located in
locations that are very close to the people we serve.

In 5 years time, tell us how big you envisage AMW.
In 5 years time, we see AMW being in every local government in the country. Our
goal is to take banking to the doorstep of the under banked and the unbanked
population.

What has kept you going from the very beginning up till this point?
I will say is the drive to create a company that meet people’s need and one that
people are grateful to have around.

In one sentence, what do you think summarize what you do at AMW?
We put trust behind low cost banking

Samsung Galaxy Fold launch postponed after news on screen faults

News around the new Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s one-of-a-kind, futuristic phone got most of us gadget freaks excited.

With a bit of nostalgia and a sense of creativity, Galaxy Fold is using multiple new technologies and materials to create a display that is flexible enough to fold. However, the Galaxy Fold’s display durability came into question after several review units failed during tests.

Some of the units broke after the confusing “protective layer” was mistakenly pulled off the screen. While in other cases the Fold weirdly failed after just a day or two of normal use for no obvious reason. Not once, not twice, not thrice but several sample users experienced issues with the Fold’s display and we don’t really know if Samsung will redeem themselves out of this.

The company said that initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.

Samsung confirmed reports from earlier that it is postponing the release of its $2,000 Galaxy Fold foldable phone only days before it was originally scheduled to go on sale.
Though disappointing to consumers who had already placed an order for Samsung’s one-of-a-kind, futuristic phone, this delay is certainly the right move.

Samsung has therefore decided to delay the release of the category-changing Galaxy Fold to make sure it measures up to the high standards they know consumers expect from them.

“Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance,” announced the company. “We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold.”

The company hopes to take measures to strengthen the display protection which might be quite some time before Samsung makes a second attempt at releasing the Fold. We should know more once Samsung’s promised update comes a couple weeks from now because they plan to announce the other new release date in the coming weeks. Biggest worry from this is, what happens to customers who had already pre-ordered, can they get refunds? And will this affect Samsung’s sales figures for the Galaxy fold? On the other hand, could this be good news for the Huawei Mate X which is also a foldable smartphone? Lets wait and see how that puns out.
