Zambia’s Ruling Party Rigs Elections by Shutting down Mobile Phones and Internet

0

As part of electoral rigging, officers from Zambia’s ruling party PF (Patriotic Front) working within ZICTA will close down as well as cut down internet data and mobile phone service in five constituencies, according to a source close to the intelligence wings.

The source further mentioned that the phone service disruption would occur in Mkushi South, Solwezi Central, Kasenengwa, Vubwi and Zambezi West as PF teams attempt to import from 500 to 1000 pre-marked ballots in each constituency. This will help prevent opposition parties and observers from reporting the rigging exercise since some places will have no coverage while others will only have decreased coverage.

The OP’s (Office of the President) move to rig the five elections aggressively comes as a direct order from President Michael Sata, putting pressure on Edgar Lungu, the new PF Secretary General to deliver the vote.

“President Michael Sata is determined to prevent Kakoma and Mulusa from returning to parliament. According to his H.E they are corrupt without any further clarification and requested that they be defeated at all cost,” stated the source.

There are also reports that the PF plans to purchase votes massively, distributing over US$250, 000 provided by Rajan Mahtani, the chairman of Finance Bank as well as an extra US$75,000 from party coffers.

According to the source, Mrs Nkonde was in Solwezi Central at Moba Guest house giving money to people going to vote at a close polling station while Mr. Kapamba, former Solwezi Mayor situated himself a few meters from Kyawama market also buying votes.

“The final technique used in the rigging the elections is tampering with electronic voting results,” noted the source.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) suddenly announced a last minute decision to introduce an electronic voting system in the Vubwi and Kasenengwa election results in Eastern Province, which has been strongly criticized by the opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD).

PF has contracted the Israeli technology firm NIKUV International Projects Ltd., which has gained a reputation for allegedly organizing massive rigging exercises in Zimbabwe, according to the source.

19 teams have so far confirmed to take part in the Safaricom Sevens tournament scheduled for the end of the month.

South Africa will be represented by the Sharks and regulars Western Province while Great Britain has three teams including Welsh Warriors, England Students and Wailers. Kenya as usual will have two teams namely defending champions Shujaa and the Morans.

Other countries expected at the tournament include Germany, Samurai Invitational, Stade de France, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Spain, Auckland Metro (New Zealand) and Australia Icons. Canada and Russia are yet to confirm their participation. So far, apart from Kenya, Samoa and Argentina are the only core teams in the tournament.

In a statement, Mwangi Muthee, the chairman of Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) assured visiting teams of utmost security during the three days of competition. His remarks focused on the withdrawal of England teams last year following Westgate terror attack.

As proof of adequate security within the country, Muthee mentioned some of the global events hosted by Kenya this year including a recent tour by South African side Western Province, Kenya Open Golf in March, European Challenge Tour, CAR Women 7s in April and the visit by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in June.

CEO WEEKENDS: Heirs Holdings to Generate Nigeria’s Power Consumption Needs in the Next Five Years

0

Tony Elumelu, a well-known global business leader and chairman of Heirs Holdings has announced the group’s ambition to generate at least a quarter of Nigeria’s power consumption needs within the next five years.

Heirs Holdings’ interests in the power sector include Transcorp Ughelli Power, a gas-fired, thermal power generating plant that was acquired under the privatisation of Nigeria’s power sector.

Elumelu will deliver the keynote address at this year’s West African Power Industry Convention (WAPIC) in Lagos from 18 to 19 November. The 11th edition of this long running, high-level energy conference and expo will once again assemble utilities, government, consultants and investors to discuss the challenges of capacity building, local markets and investment.

“The power industry is a catalytic sector and the development of our country and our continent cannot happen without fixing it,” stated the chairman of Heirs Holdings.

He further described the USA’s Power Africa Initiative as “an amazing opportunity to democratize access to power for Africans, and the $2.5 billion investment commitment we have made reflects exactly how excited I am about it. The present administration made a bold decision when it decided to affect the changes envisaged by the Power Sector Reform Act — legislation that had been on the books since 2005. And that bold step was reinforced during President Barack Obama’s last visit to Africa. We felt more strongly than ever, the need to help power Africa.”

“Our experience so far at Ughelli power plant is testimony to the size of the opportunity; our amazing team has taken that plant from 150MW capacity when we took over in November 2013, to 450MW today; we expect it to increase 700MW by October and to achieve 1000MW by the second quarter of 2015. At that rate, we’ll be contributing 20 per cent of Nigeria’s total power generation.” Furthermore, he says they are working on a greenfield project that will expand the capacity of Ughelli by an additional 1000MW in the next three to five years and they have signed an MOU with GE and Symbion Power to facilitate this,” he added.

Will the Laptop Project Increase Power Connectivity in Kenya

0

The Kenyan government is relying on free primary laptop project to increase power connectivity within the country. The aim of the project, which is one of Jubilee’s chief projects, is to provide free laptops to primary schools.

laptops-for-schools

Although the promise to donate laptops would have seen Kenya join countries such as Mongolia and Rwanda, where school children use laptops to access information on various subjects, play and learn, it has encountered several challenges with over 3000 teachers having been trained on computer courses. However, the government still insists that the project is still on course even though it has been postponed.

According to Joseph Njoroge, the PS of energy and petroleum, the project will enable homes situated close to schools benefit from power while schools distant from the national grid connected to solar power.

He further added, “By June 2015, each public primary school will be connected to power and it will have an overflow effect to households close to the schools.”

According to the government, more than 20,000 public primary schools will be connected to power by the end of the financial year and approximately 10, 184 schools will depend on solar power.

“The present power connectivity in the country stands between 32 and 35 per cent, which the government plans to raise up to slightly more than 70 per cent by 2020. However, approximately 16,000 schools have been connected to power while an additional 6,000 will be connected by June 2015,”Njoroge explained.

Ben Chumo, the MD of Kenya Power also commented: “Within this financial year, one million extra customers will be connected to the national grid. Kenya Power will build on last year’s success where 443,000 new customer connections were recorded up from 307,000 in the previous year to accelerate the rate of connection. The company will also allocate enough resources to maintain high rate of connectivity in coming years as part of demand creation of the 5,000 megawatts additional capacity conceived of by government.”

Chumo further noted that they would work closely with financial institutions to create suitable loan facilities to help possible customers pay for new connections. He also said that they would pay Sh100, 000 for a customer whose quotation is over Sh135, 000.

“The company has put into place a new law that will see power disconnected if a customer fails to repay a loan as a way to guarantee financial institutions,” he added.

East Africans to wait longer for low roaming rates

0

Late entries by remaining East African countries of Tanzania and Burundi into talks will mean that subscribers will have to wait until June so as to realize their desire to MobilePhonesAfricapay lower calling rates across the EA countries.

Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda had agreed to cap the maximum roaming charges in the three states at about $0.10 per minute beginning this month meaning the rates will have gone significantly lower.

The Business Daily now reports that the The Communication Authority (CA) of Kenya has confirmed that Tanzania and Burundi have now joined the other four other countries  in the quest for a One Area Network during a meeting of regional regulatory bodies in Arusha last week.

“When agreement is implemented the cost of making calls would come down in all member states of the East Africa Community,” said Francis Wangusi, the director general of CA.

From the Arusha meeting, Tanzania and Burundi to carry a study on the rate they would want applicable by December 31.

The six states will then sit afterwards and come up with a suitable agreement.

“We expect the implementation of the agreed rates to be implemented in June 2015,” Wangusi added.

In June 2013, Uganda introduced Ksh7 (about Rwf54.6) levy on calls while Tanzania introduced a Ksh10 (about Rwf78) levy. Rwanda charges Ksh9 (about Rwf70.2) and Burundi Kh13 (about Rwf101.4).

This means that all these countries levy taxes unlike Kenya being the only one that does not levy taxes on cross-border calls and has been calling for a common termination tariff introduced.

Tablet PC with cloud of application iconsThe Middle East and Africa (MEA) tablet market recorded a 2% quarterly decline in shipments during the second quarter of 2014 to total 3.95 million units, according to the latest results released today by International Data Corporation (IDC).

This is against a backdrop of the MEA market remaining the world’s fastest growing region as it continues to be an area of focus for all vendors operating in the tablet space.

“The reasons for the quarter-on-quarter decline in Q2 2014 were twofold,” says Victoria Mendes, a research analyst at IDC Middle East, Turkey, and Africa. “We anticipated a slowdown in the Middle East due to the traditionally slow summer and Ramadan period, but there were also inventory pileups from the previous quarter in some parts of Africa and the Middle East, and these served to amplify the market’s deceleration.”

Samsung’s 862,000 units in Q2 2014 were more than enough for it to hold onto first place in the market, despite suffering a double-digit quarterly decline. Its closest rival Apple remained in second place after shipping 622,000 units for the quarter. Lenovo returned to the top three with 420,000 units, courtesy of a very strong push from the vendor as it targeted the region with numerous new tablet launches. Another vendor making great strides in the region is Asus, which climbed back to fourth place with a total of 284,000 units shipped in the quarter. Rounding out the top five MEA tablet vendors for Q2 2014 was General Mobile with 282,000 units, primarily the result of a very large education project delivered by the vendor in Turkey.

“The tablet market is undoubtedly witnessing a shift in terms of vendor shares,” continues Mendes. “Traditional PC vendors, such as Lenovo, ASUS, Toshiba, HP, and Acer, are becoming much more aggressive in terms of their product launches and pricing strategies, and this is driving a considerable shift in consumer demand from low-cost Far-Eastern players to these Tier-2 brands. Furthermore, the two tablet giants, Samsung and Apple, saw their combined share fall six percentage points to 37% in Q2 2014, a trend that is expected to continue as consumers increasingly opt for the best of both worlds in terms of price and quality offered by the traditional PC vendors’ new releases.”

This increasing competition in the MEA tablet space is spurring a new approach from the market’s two dominant forces, according to Fouad Charakla, research manager at IDC Middle East, Turkey, and Africa.

“With Samsung launching its 12.2 inch Galaxy Tab Pro this year and expectations of Apple launching a 12.9 inch iPad in 2015, it is clear that even these vendors are trying to expand their product ranges to include various sizes,” he says. “This comes amid concerns that they may miss out on new opportunities by restricting themselves to smaller devices, and these bigger screen sizes may also prove to be a better platform for penetrating the commercial space.”

Bill Gates Pledge $50 Million to Help End Ebola in West Africa

0

commencement_news2The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged a $50 million grant to support the scale up of emergency efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and interrupt transmission of the virus.

The foundation said it will channel the funds to United Nations agencies and international organizations involved in the response to enable them and national governments to purchase badly needed supplies and scale up emergency operations in affected countries. It will also work with public and private sector partners to accelerate the development of therapies, vaccines, and diagnostics that could be effective in treating patients and preventing further transmission of the disease.

“We are working urgently with our partners to identify the most effective ways to help them save lives now and stop transmission of this deadly disease,” said Sue Desmond-Hellmann, CEO of the Gates Foundation. “We also want to accelerate the development of treatments, vaccines and diagnostics that can help end this epidemic and prevent future outbreaks.”

To date, the Gates Foundation has committed more than $10 million of the $50 million to fight the Ebola outbreak, including $5 million to WHO for emergency operations and R&D assessments and $5 million to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support efforts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to purchase essential medical supplies, coordinate response activities, and provide at-risk communities with life-saving health information. An additional $2 million will also be committed immediately to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support incident management, treatment, and health care system strengthening.

In August, Nigeria responded to the current crisis by opening an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Lagos, with support from the foundation and the Dangote Foundation. Leveraging expertise and lessons from the national polio program, the EOC has been at the center of an aggressive push by the federal and state governments to contain the spread of the virus, and there is cautious optimism that this prompt action may have helped avert a broader outbreak.

As additional grants are made, the foundation will provide further details on its funding commitments to on-the-ground operations and to research and development for Ebola drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics.

SheriaSoft Wants To Digitize East African Law Firms

Dennis Gachoki and Kihato Mwangi
Kihato Mwangi (left) and Dennis Gachoki (right)

As Kenya embraces the dawn of the digital age, young entrepreneurial IT experts are dedicating countless hours and vast resources to take advantage of this opportunity before it gains root. One of them is a 21 year old student pursuing Geospatial engineering at the University of Nairobi. Unlike his colleagues who spend their leisure time in extra-curricular activities, Denis Gachoki dedicates every ounce of his leisure time to experiment on new web development projects at his company which he founded right after completing high school 3yrs ago.

“When I started Focweb Technologies, I was a bit skeptical at first because all I had was a beat up PC which had a poor RAM and processor,” says Gachoki. “But with time I began designing websites for clients and coming up with software projects that would help in curbing youth unemployment in Kenya. One of them being the Youth Power Foundation and the web content development site www.focuspointwriters.com

According to Gachoki, the company’s clientele grew exponentially once he started pursuing his degree. “I now had to strike a balance between my work and my studies. Moving to the Nairobi CBD doubled my clientele. So I needed a partner. Someone with exceptional IT skills that would run the company in my absence once in a while.”

It wasn’t long before Gachoki met KihatoMwangi at a recentihub workshop in the Nairobi University campus grounds. They discussed and shared ideas which had a striking similarity.

“At that moment, I knew that I had found the right partner. If we both worked together, we would propel Focweb Technologies to greater heights,” reiterates Gachoki.

With help from Kihato , Focweb Technologies has been working on numerous software development projects. “Yes indeed, we have so many software development projects we are working on right now but most of them are yet to be named. However we have two key softwares that we are focusing on right now, that’s Bungesoft and Sheriasoft.”

According to Kihato, the associate IT expert,Bungesoft is already up and running and is being used in several constituencies in Kenya. The software allows members of parliament to share and compare notes and briefs while at the same time manage constituency projects and follow up on the disbursement of the Constituency Development Funds.

“But that’s not all,” continues Kihato, “we recently came up with a software geared to make work easier for lawyers and lawfirms alike. We decided to name it Sheriasoft since we want to target not just Kenya, but also the Swahili-speaking East African market at large.”

He goes on to add that Sheriasoft handles basic tasks pertaining to lawfirms such as case handling and documentation, client billing, appointment scheduling, attorney communication and so forth.

In regards to the guiding light that has kept Focweb Technologies on the right track, Gachoki also gave credit to his father for his support.

“Indeed, my dad has been a strong foundation when it comes to influencing my projects. He has never belittled my ideas. He has always mentored me whenever I brought up a project to him. He has in fact been my major sponsor in these two latest projects that we are working on.”

When asked about the vision of Focweb Technologies, Gachoki emphasized on the need to strike a balance between ambition and reality.

“It’s so obvious that many companies today want to impact the world and that’s good. But we don’t want to be carried away by ambition that we forget to offer quality products and services. I want customers of Focweb technologies to be the promoters of this company through the testimony of what we have to offer,” he said. “Otherwise it would be pointless to create so much hype about our company only for our customers to be disappointed. That’s why we are at the testing phase of Bungesoft and Sheriasoft to ensure that once it hits the market, there won’t be any cause for alarm. And that’s what Focweb is all about. Quality products and excellent customer service that suits your needs.” said Kihato Mwangi.

“There are very few jobs today that don’t require some sort of ICT understanding, skill or experience,” said Dr. Gilbert Saggia, Country Leader, Oracle Kenya. “In a fast-growing economy like Kenya, investing in ICT skills is imperative for business and government alike. Oracle is proud to work alongside organisations like Strathmore University to introduce a world-class training facility to support skills development in the country.”

Kenya has identified teacher training in computer science as a critical building block in its skills capacity building work.  Oracle Academy completed its inaugural educator training event at @iLabAfrica for educators from Strathmore University, Equity Foundation, and iHub in July.  The five-day Oracle Academy Java Fundamentals course prepared teachers to cascade critical skills to nearly 2000 students in the coming year as part of ongoing relationships with Oracle Academy to develop IT skills in Kenya.

“Development of effective and collaborative innovation ecosystems like  @iLabAfrica can help drive African economies like Kenya’s,” said Dr. Joseph Sevilla, Director, @iLabAfrica Research Centre. “Collaboration is crucial to innovation. Working together with Oracle has enabled us to leverage technology as a means of addressing our most pressing challenges. This collaborative drive gave rise to the new Centre of Excellence @iLabAfrica, which can be a powerful vehicle for delivering technology education.”

2014 SEED Awards Honors Women-Led Enterprises

0

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that the 2014 SEED Awards Africa Symposium will be hosted at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi. This is one of the largest gatherings of start-up social and environmental enterprises ever, as 41 green entrepreneurs are celebrated at this event.

The Award winners will receive from SEED a package of individually tailored support for their businesses, technical assistance, access to other supporting institutions, and a financial contribution of US$5,000.

According to UNEP, the SEED Awards identify and support innovative social and environmental start-up enterprises, which can tackle key sustainable development challenges at community level, in developing and emerging economies.

“As in previous years, the 2014 SEED Awards have a special focus on Africa, with 28 Awards made to enterprises in Ethiopia, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. A further ten SEED Low Carbon Awards go to climate-smart enterprises across the globe that contribute towards grassroots climate change mitigation and/or adaption. Special recognition is also given to three women-led enterprises that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment as their core objectives,” added UNEP.

Every SEED Award Winner will receive a financial contribution, technical assistance, access to different supporting institutions, and tailor-made support to develop their business and skills,” explained UNEP.

From an enterprise that produces premium outdoor furniture out of recycled plastic and organic waste materials in Colombia, to a women’s farming cooperative that improves food security in Nepal, to enterprises that market solar electricity kiosks in rural off grid areas of Malawi and promote bikes as subsidised moving billboards for the rural poor in Mozambique – this year’s SEED Winners again demonstrate that innovation, working in partnerships, and a dedicated focus on sustainability contribute significantly towards building a world of flourishing communities in which eco-entrepreneurship drives sustainable development, according to UNEP.

“The 2014 call for applications saw contributions from 84 countries, representing the collaborative efforts of partnerships between enterprises, non-governmental organizations, women’s and youth groups, labour organizations, public authorities, international agencies, and academia. Most of the applications were in the agricultural and rural development sectors; others were in energy and climate change, and ecosystem management. Many entries at the same time addressed IT applications, and education and training,” UNEP mentioned.

Achim Steiner, UNEP’s Executive Director commented: “The SEED Winners are visionaries who are spearheading the green economy among diverse communities and across a wide range of sectors. We are especially proud of the SEED’s acknowledgement of women-led green enterprises having introduced the Gender Equality component since 2011.”

“We salute the vision, innovation and resilience of these trailblazers as they lead the way towards a greener and more sustainable future,” he said.

Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator also noted: “The 2014 SEED Winners, have followed enlightened social and environmental pathways in their entrepreneurial activities. They offer good examples of how local entrepreneurs can contribute to successful and sustainable development.”

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director UN Women said: “Women’s economic empowerment is central to achieving gender equality. It’s more than a matter of basic fairness: it’s an established positive cycle. With a livelihood and an income of their own, women have increased status, can provide for their families, and become empowered in other parts of their lives as well, such as making decisions about education, housing, food choices, and medical care.

“We are pleased to be working with SEED and supporting the SEED Gender Equality Awards for the outstanding women-led social and environmental enterprises that are leading the way,” said Mlambo-Ngcuka.

The 2014 SEED Gender Equality Award winners by country include Bangladesh, Nepal and Zimbabwe.

Apple Partners With Visa to Launch Apple Pay for Mobile Devices

0

apple-pay-walkthrough-3Visa Inc. the global leader in payments, last night announced it is supporting consumer payments with the new iPhone 6 and [other Apple devices]. Thanks to a new capability called Visa Token Service, participating financial institutions in the U.S., and eventually abroad, will be able to add Visa debit and credit cards to Apple Pay,  Apple’s new payment service, and enable their customers to make easy and secure purchases at select U.S. merchants both in stores and in apps.

Visa Token Service technology works by replacing sensitive payment account information found on plastic cards with a digital account number or “token” that can be safely stored on mobile devices and used for in store and in app purchases. Visa will roll out the service to financial institutions in phases — initially supporting early participants in the Apple Pay launch, and then extending the service availability to all of its U.S. clients.

“Combining the trust, scale and security of Visa payments with Apple Pay will accelerate adoption of mobile payments,” said Charlie Scharf, Chief Executive Officer, Visa Inc. “We said from the beginning that token services would provide great new consumer and merchant experiences, and you’re seeing it today in our efforts with Apple, and there’s more to come.”

Apple Pay lets you make purchases in some of the most highly visited stores and within apps on the App Store with just the touch of a finger, using the new iPhone 6 and [other Apple devices]. Visa account holders will continue to receive all of the rewards, benefits and security offered by Visa credit and debit cards.

By enabling Visa account holders to also make purchases in store and in app with their new iPhone 6 and [other Apple devices], consumers will now have a seamless experience with their preferred form of payment.

“The combination of new digital experiences from Apple with new network capabilities from Visa provides for great payment experiences and enhanced security for millions of Visa account holders, merchants and financial institutions,” said Scharf.

CyberSource and Authorize.Net, two Visa-owned payment platforms, have also integrated with Apple Pay, providing online merchants with payment management solutions and supporting them to securely accept in app payments from the iPhone 6 and [other Apple devices].

East Africa Data Centre announces KSh1bn expansion on galloping demand for secure data space

0

 Data-center-11

East Africa Data Centre, the only Tier 3 secure electronic data centre in east and central Africa, has today announced a Ksh1bn expansion to meet rack space demand that initially forced it to ration allocations to customers. Unveiling the second and third floors of the data centre, the East Africa Data Centre announced that the centre would now be extended to four floors, totalling 2000 sq. m.

The data centre, which now houses Kenya’s Internet Exchange Point, has been credited by the global Internet Society as a key factor in driving down internet prices in Kenya, to among the lowest in Africa. The East Africa Data Centre hosts the Points of Presence for global carriers with international coverage, including Tata, Level3, Seacom, and Liquid Telecom, as well as carriers owning fibre network infrastructure, including Safaricom, JamiiTelcom, Access Kenya, Orange Telkom Kenya Ltd, Wananchi Online, and Frontier Optical Network.

It is further playing a key role in enabling financial and corporate organizations to hold data securely; protecting them in the event of cybercrime and offering 24/7 secure housing for their data and back-ups.

“The East Africa Data Centre has transformed how data traffic is handled in the region. By providing a central point for interconnect services, it has reduced latency, improved data services, reduced costs and made it easier to transfer data across networks,” said Dan Kwach, General Manager East Africa Data Centre.

Within six months of starting, it had fully sold Phase 1 of the centre’s rack space amounting to the entire first floor. It has now opened another 500 sq m floor, which is already 90 percent occupied, and with the third floor already prepped for occupancy, East Africa Data Centre unveiled plans to expand to the fourth floor immediately, to cater for demand.

“We had to ration the rack space when we were selling the first floor due to huge demand, until we could get the second floor built and operational and the third floor ready to go quickly. The second floor took roughly 8 months, but now we have the space ready, we can move much quicker and customers can buy the amount they want,” said Mr Kwach.

The accelerated expansion in EADC’s rack space has benefitted the local engineering and construction services sector, with all of the contractors for the expansion sourced locally.

It also comes amid growing concern for data security. In late 2013, Kenya’s ICT Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiangi, raised the flag on estimates that the country would lose an estimated KSh 2 billion (about $23 million) through cybercrime, with the number of cyber-attacks detected in Kenyan cyberspace more than doubling last year to 5.4m attacks, compared to 2.6m in 2012.

Uganda, which last year reported a surge in economic crimes, up 14.9 per cent, singled out cybercrime, principally in mobile money and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) fraud, as responsible for the loss of about USH1.5bn (Ksh51m), while Bank of Tanzania (BoT) statistics indicate TZS 1.3bn (Ksh69.5) has been stolen across the country through cyber fraud, according to the Kenya Cyber Security Report 2014.

Financial institutions are also introducing potentially vulnerable web and mobile applications, with a recent study that sampled 33 online banking portals finding that only 2 of the 33 portals sampled had adequate online security deployed on their web application. As a result, many financial institutions are now looking into EADC to store their data, reported the Kenya Cyber Security Report 2014.

“Banks and financial institutions are the second largest type of occupant at the East Africa Data Centre, at about 30 percent. With about 43 banks in Kenya, the demand for highly secure stable environments like ours, for use as disaster recovery, high-availability, or primary sites, has been rising,” said Kwach.

Intel launches the new Intel® Core™ M processor

Intel senior vice president Kirk Skaugen shows off the new Acer Aspire Switch 12 with the Intel(R) Core(tm) M processor at IFA in Berlin

At IFA, a global trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances, Intel launched the new Intel® Core™ M processor, which will power new 2 in 1 devices from a variety of manufacturers including: Acer*, ASUS*, Dell*, HP*, Lenovo* and Toshiba*. The Intel Core M processor can power razor-thin devices with Intel Core processor-level performance and deliver up to double the battery life when compared to a 4-year-old system.2

“We’ve been on a multi-year mission to address end-user requirements and transform mobile computing,” said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of personal computing at Intel Corporation. “The introduction of Core M marks a significant milestone in that journey. Core M is the first of a new product family designed to deliver the promise of one of the world’s thinnest laptops and highest performance tablets in a single 2 in 1 device.”

The Intel Core M processor enables up to 50 percent faster computer performance and 40 percent faster graphics performance versus the comparable, previous 4th generation Intel Core processor.3 Consumers with older PCs will notice a more significant performance improvement. The Intel Core M processor delivers up to two times the compute performance and up to seven times better graphics compared to a 4- year-old PC.

The Intel Core M processor package is 50 percent smaller and, at 4.5 watts, has 60 percent lower thermal power than the previous generation.5 This lets OEMs design sleek, fanless systems less than 9 mm thin – thinner than an AAA battery and today’s sleekest laptops. There are already more than 20 Intel Core M processor-based OEM products in the development pipeline. The first systems based on the Intel Core M processor will be on shelves for the holiday selling season.

At IFA, manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo unveiled new, coming-soon Intel Core M processor-based devices across a range of sizes, styles and price points.

  • In Q4, Acer will expand its popular 2-in-1 series of notebooks with the Aspire Switch 12, featuring a 12.5-inch FHD display with unique kickstand and magnet keyboard to move smoothly between five modes.
  • ASUS introduced the ASUS Zenbook UX305, an incredibly light and thin Ultrabook™ with a 13-inch QHD display and the ASUS Transformer Book T300FA* 2 in 1, which was unveiled during the Intel keynote. The Transformer Book T300FA is a high-performance 2 in 1 and is expected to be available in Europe this fall for an estimated €599. Looking ahead, ASUS plans to go even thinner with the ASUS Transformer T300 Chi.
  • Dell has announced its first commercial 2 in 1, the Latitude 13 7000 Series, which combines a lightweight business Ultrabook and a detachable tablet in one powerful, no-compromise device.
  • HP further extends its award-winning ENVY portfolio with the addition of two new HP ENVY x2 detachable PCs, available in 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch form factors.
  • The new Lenovo ThinkPad Helix, available in October, is 12 percent lighter and measures 15 percent thinner than its predecessor while packing even more power thanks to the Intel Core M processor.

Intel also previewed a forthcoming Intel Core M processor-based design from Toshiba, and said broader availability of Intel Core M processor-based devices is expected in the first half of next year.

To further system choice and availability, Intel said it is working with ODMs including Wistron and others. Wistron plans an Intel Core M processor-based design inspired by the Intel “Llama Mountain” reference device. Intel first unveiled the stunning, fanless Llama Mountain reference device, which measures 7.2 mm thin and weighs a mere 670 grams, at Computex in Taiwan earlier this year.

Intel Core M is a “conflict-free” product, which means this product does not contain conflict minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten and/or gold) that directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or adjoining countries.

The Intel Core M processor is available in several versions: the up to 2.0 GHz Intel Core M-5Y10/5Y10a processors and the up to 2.6 GHz Intel Core M-5Y70 processor. The Core M-5Y70 is the highest performing Intel Core M processor and is also available with Intel® vPro™ technology for business 2 in 1s with built-in security features to help protect data, user identities and network access.6

Additional Intel Core M platform features include support for high-quality audio, Intel® Wireless Display 5.0, Intel’s second-generation 802.11ac products and will evolve to support wireless docking with WiGig from Intel. For more information visit:www.intel.com.

Minsitry of Health TMEA MOU Signing

The Kenyan Ministry of Health and TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) has signed a deal that will see the development of an information system e-portal for Port Health Services. The e-portal will help improve reporting and information sharing among all Ports of Entry (PoE) and the ministry headquarters.

Khadija Kasachong the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health said: “This ministry is one of the 13 key Government Agencies being relied upon for successful achievement of Mombasa Port Community Charter Targets. The Charter, which was launched by H. E. the President on 30thJune 2014, aims at trade facilitation through effective inter-agency collaboration. The targets include faster automated services by 31st December 2014. Automation of Port Health Services will contribute towards achieving this”.

The purpose of the charter is to among others establish a permanent framework of collaboration, targets and timelines and the collaboration of government agencies at the port will immensely contribute to trade facilitation.

TradeMark East Africa Kenya Country Director Dr. Chris Kiptoo added, “The portal will be directly targeting importers and exporters whose goods have to undergo a mandatory check by Port Health officials at the point of entry before they are allowed into country. Traders can apply directly through the online system at their own convenience as long as they have access to internet saving them time and delays. Additionally, the traders will be able to receive periodical notifications on the status of their application as opposed to them having to physically visit port health offices to inquire about applications.”

Critical to facilitation of trade, the port health e-portal will enable traders to apply and have approval for the mandatory Export Health Certificate (ECG) online. It will also enable officers to access lodged documents electronically 24/7 while providing for them an interface with Kenya National Electronic single Window System (KNESWS) which will lead to faster issuance of Import and Export Health certificates, hence enhancing trade facilitation. The development of the online portal will be facilitated by TMEA as part of its mandate to promote regional trade and economic integration.

TradeMark East Africa (TMEA) will provide technical and financial support to the Division of Environment Health Port Health services Unit. In enhancing trade environment, increasing market access and enhancing trade environment and increased competitiveness, TMEA is spearheading adoption of ICT within key government and non-government institutions to transform their processes and increase efficiencies.

As part of the Kenyan government digitization process, the health services ePortal will also be integrated with other government agencies including Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) via an interface with the Kenya National Single Window currently in development by the Kenya Trade Network Agency (KENTRADE).
