BMW SA strikes deal to install charging points for electric vehicles

0

Schneider Electric and BMW South Africa have announced a partnership for the supply and set-up of charging points for BMW’s electric vehicles, which they say will go on sale starting early next year.

Schneider will work together with BMW electric car customers and sales agents to carry out home surveys ahead of installing charging points and providing support and maintenance for “wallbox” charging stations.

According to Antonio Antela Martinez, the sales and marketing director of BMW South Africa, the company sees the professional wallbox installation for charging the BMW i8 and i3 as one of the major factors that have led to successful marketing of electric vehicles.

BMW hopes that the i3 will be used by metropolitans who do not travel out of the city or substitute a family’s second car, since electric vehicles lack enough battery capacity that can compete with the drive range of a full petrol tank. In a single charge, the i3 can go for approximately 160km, depending on how it is driven.

The BMW i3 will also have a range extender engine that maintains the charge of the lithium-ion battery at a fixed level while moving using a small 650cc engine that charges the batteries during an emergency.

The BMW i8 is a flashy sports hybrid with a petrol engine and an electric motor.

LG’s “Music Flow” triggers music convergence race

LG+Music+Flow+Family

If you’re smack in the middle of your favorite song but you have to leave the house suddenly, LG’s new Music Flow system has you covered. The Music Flow sound bar, network bridge and wireless speakers connect to an app that seamlessly keeps playing as you leave the house.

The new Music Flow Speakers (H3, H5, and H7), HS6 Sound Bar and R1 Network Bridge all will connect wirelessly with the help of the dedicated smartphone app.

“LG Music Flow takes the fast-growing concept of wireless multi-room audio systems to a new level with its smart convenience and superior sound quality,” says the electronics manufacturer.

“Our advanced system can create a personal soundtrack that not only follows the listener from room to room, but also when the user enters the home. LG engineers have set a whole new standard by introducing features and functions to the wireless audio system category that have never been available before on competing units.”

Auto Music Play is one of the many compelling features of the new LG Music Flow. Users can listen to music outdoors on a smartphone and automatically switch to Music Flow when arriving home. And with HomeChat integration, users can remotely ask LG Music Flow on the way home for song and playlist recommendations suitable for dinner guests arriving later that evening.

The wireless sound ecosystem is controlled by the Music Flow Player app for Apple or Android which acts as the command centre and stream streams music from services such as Spotify, Deezer, and Napster, Internet radio stations, or from any gadgets connected to your home Wi-Fi network.

LG Music Flow employs mesh network technology and dual band Wi-Fi to ensure uninterrupted, crystal-clear HD music playback unlike competing systems that rely on a single access point which causes music interruptions and pauses whenever the signal level drops. Expanding LG Music Flow with additional speakers is an absolute breeze.

To guarantee optimal sound performance, LG developed and implemented a proprietary Automatic Loudness Compensation Algorithm in the Music Flow. This advanced software technology ensures audio strength and clarity across all frequencies.

In addition, each speaker features an advanced nano-fiber pulp and foam paper diaphragm that further improves the quality of the sound. Unique to the HS6 Sound Bar model, LG’s Stereo Field Extension (SFX) Algorithm creates a larger sweet spot and amplifies the surround sound effect.

LG Music Flow is the first system in its category to feature 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback across multiple inter-connectable devices that reproduces studio-like quality sound, far superior to a CD or digital MP3 music. Now, consumers can hear a level of realism that hasn’t been possible before in a wireless multi-room audio system for the home.

Microsoft Phones Shift From Nokia to Opera Browser

OPERA

Opera’s “Mini” browser will soon become the default web browser for Microsoft’s existing feature phones and Asha phones portfolio, says the mobile web browser.

According to the license issued, the agreement applies to mobile phones based on the Series 30+, Series 40 and Asha software platforms. Nokia’s own Xpress browser offered data compression services similar to those offered by Opera Mini.

So this means that every Nokia user who uses the Xpress browser should move to the latest Opera Mini browser. New devices will come with Opera Mini pre-installed.

“We continue to sell and support classic first and feature phones as well as the Asha range, which have performed well with millions of people who want new mobile experiences at lower price points,” said Rich Bernardo, head of legacy business, Phones, Microsoft.

“The agreement with Opera will enable us to provide continuity of service as we transition from Xpress Browser to Opera Mini.”

South African Online Retail Survey Results set for release at the 2014 eCommerce Conference

Marketingpilgrim.com estimates that US online retail spend will reach just under $300 billion this year alone, meaning that it would be interesting to see how the South African online retail environment fairs against global statistics.

Statistics gathered from over 116,000 respondents during the 2014 South African eCommerce Awards survey show that 73% of respondents spend their hard earned money on Books, DVD’s, Games and Music when shopping online and 49% of these consumers tend to visit the same site for repeat purchases. 31% of respondents make more than 10 purchases a year with 49% of these consumers spending between R250 – R500 per basket.

It is evident that South Africa’s online purchasing is growing exponentially and at this year’s eCommerce Conference, to be held on the 4th September 2014 at Gallagher Convention Centre, we can expect to hear the results of online shopping trends and online consumer purchasing behaviours, as well as gain significant insight into the types of products being purchased, how much our local market is spending online, and an understanding of how industry leaders expect these figures to move over the next year and beyond.

Aside from announcing the results of uAfrica.com’s research survey, conducted, during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of this year, Luke Mckend who is currently the Country Director for Google South Africa will be discussing ‘Africa as a mobile first continent.’  Among other industry leaders is one of the International Key Note Speakers, Brennan Loh, Head of Business Development at Shopify. Hailing from Ottawa, Canada, Loh manages Shopify’s strategic channel partners as well as the company’s network of global resellers and will be discussing The Future of Online Retail’ – Shopify explores new technologies in retail from an International perspective.

“The purpose of the eCommerce conference is to help SME’s understand the dynamic of the online retail environments, inform and educate the delegates about the current ‘buzz’ word, omnichannel retail and enable these business owners to effectively manage their businesses online,” said Andy Higgins, Managing Director of uAfrica.com, hosts of the annual eCommerce Conference.

“We also want to be able to provide these business owners with tools to help improve online purchase processes, inventory management applications and how to make technology work for them, as well as help with business growth and sustainability suggestions based on our survey findings. The 2014 eCommerce Award winners will also be announced at the conference,’ concluded Higgins.

Jumia unveils services in Cameroon

0

Jumia, one of Africa’s top e-commerce sites, has launched full-fledged e-retail services in Cameroon. This follows recent successful launches in Ghana and Uganda, thus taking the total number of African countries that have the online retailer active to nine.

Cameroonians have a strong purchasing power and are more and more interested in consumer goods. Even though internet penetration within the country is still low, it is largely growing thanks to the increase in smartphone use, which implies that now is the perfect time for online retail to set up itself. According to McKinsey Global Institute report in 2013, Cameroon is Africa’s 13th biggest economy with an economic growth rate of 4.7 percent and a nominal GDP  of $26 billion in 2011.

With own delivery teams and warehouses in addition to various payment options, which include credit card, mobile money and cash on delivery, Jumia has conformed to the worldwide megatrend for African consumers and won the trust of a big and constant developing client base.

“This is another exciting step for Jumia. We are convinced that Cameroonians will take up the chance to shop conveniently and easily online. Additionally, we are committed to preserving our high standards of security, tremendous service and great value as we proceed to grow across the continent,” stated Christina Hawley, the managing director for New Countries at Jumia.

According to Reuters, Jumia , which was initially launched in 2012, has already successfully brought e-commerce to Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt, Uganda, Ghana, Morocco and Ivory Coast in addition to launching a site within the UK.

Telecash Zimbabwe Introduces Zero Fees on Money Transfers to other telecash Subscribers

0

telecashTelecash Zimbabwe has cut all fees on mobile money transfers to allow its customers to send money for free to other registered telecash subscribers.

Effected last Friday, 22 August 2014, the new tariffs will allow subscribers to send money to their friends on the same network for free, no matter how much money is being sent. This is the first time that anyone using a mobile money service has been able to send money to someone else free of charge.

There is no charge for depositing money (cash in) in one’s telecash account.

Ranging from 10 cents up to two dollars to $4,90 for an amount of between $400,01 and $500, which is the maximum amount that can be sent. The fees include the mandatory five cents money transfer tax.

The cost of sending money to someone who is not a registered telecash subscriber varies from 10 cents for sending two dollars or less to $5.40 for sending from between $400,01 and $500, which is the maximum transaction amount. These fees also include the five cents money transfer tax.

However, the recipient non-telecash customer pays nothing to cash out the money from a telecash agent.

Chief Commercial Officer Nkosinathi Ncube pointed out that this latest move by Telecel was a first in the market.

“This development brings real value to telecash subscribers as they now can send money for free. There is no charge at all for sending money to a registered telecash subscriber. Cash-in is free. Non-registered cash-out is free.

“This is a first in the market and a shift in the mobile money business,” he said.

I Never Thought I had Anything to Sell

0

OLX-Free-Classifieds

So, OLX agents have been going around various Nairobi estates, better known as hoods, educating people on how they can sell unused items from their homes on the platform.

You may have seen them, donning the classic purple and orange of OLX with the T-shirts proudly proclaiming to ‘Ask me how you can sell on OLX’. I hope you did.

Dubbed hood2hood, these agents’ sole mission is to ensure as many people as possible learn how to use the OLX app and maybe use it to supplement their income when times get rough.

Though not as bad as in the west, Kenyans are a hoarding culture, with those who do not hoard, often exchanging the unused item in their house for something else, what is popularly known as Malimali. We use them but we do not love them. Every Kenyan I have spoken to has used their services, maybe more than once, but none has any praise for them, the most common reason being that they take so much more than they give.

Many Kenyans do not know the value they might be holding in their houses. Asked whether she had ever used OLX to sell anything, Ms Jayne, a working mother of two said she hadn’t, because she didn’t believe she had anything to sell. It was her opinion that not everybody can use the platform as you may be made to believe.

Asked whether she could identify any household item she wasn’t using, she was surprised to find she had at least 4 items she hadn’t used in a while, and could still sell them as they were in good working condition.

This is the case with many Kenyans who engage in barter trade with the malimali vendors, who end up selling the items they get from people as second hand materials. Platforms like OLX offer a chance for people to handle the transactions themselves.

Ms. Idah received a call from her son’s school informing her that her son would not be allowed to sit for his examinations due to unpaid school fees.

“Desperate times call for drastic measures, and this was my son’s education, it wasn’t really a thing I had to think about or debate. So, following the instructions given to me by the OLX agents who had been to my house, I posted my refrigerator on OLX and sold it the next day,” she says.

Idah was able to pay her son’s fees and have some left over for other expenses.

Online platforms like OLX, are easy to use and can come in handy, not only for unused items lying around in the house, but also for business owners.

With the hood2hood activations, more people are able to get an understanding of how OLX works and therefore use it should they find they need to.

Kenya first becoming digital technology giant

0

lam

Statistics by Kenya’s communication regulator Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) indicate is fast becoming an African digital technology giant. Third quarter industry results recently indicate there are now 21.6 million internet users in the country.

This increase in internet penetration, which now stands at 53.3 percent, creates a big opportunity for brands and businesses to move online. Indeed, the number of domain names in Kenya has increased by 9.1% in the last quarter, a testament to the number of businesses and individuals going online.

The real estate sector has not been left out of this growth. User-friendly websites have been created to tap into the growing market, including the global property listings portal Lamudi, which launched in Kenya in October 2013.

Lamudi Kenya MD Dan Karua observed: “The Kenyan property market is very vibrant. We have created a user friendly platform lamudi.co.ke, for agents, developers and individual property owners to sell or rent their properties.”

Furthermore, recent months have seen exponential growth in the number of mobile phone users and the level of mobile penetration. According to the CAK report, the number of mobile subscribers in the country now stands at 31.3 million, an increase of over half a million, and mobile penetration has reached 78.2%.

Lamudi has also tapped into this ever growing market with its app, Lamudi: Real Estate for Sale and Rent, available on iOS and Android. The app has all the features and functionality of the Lamudi website, but with the convenience of mobile. This is crucial because in Africa mobile ownership is significantly higher than laptop or PC ownership, and many Africans use their smartphones to carry out tasks that would typically be undertaken on a computer in Europe or North America. In fact, in the last quarter 99% of new internet subscriptions came from internet mobile data subscribers.

However, the exponential growth in the number of the online market comes with its challenges.

“The biggest challenge we have encountered is getting rid of fraud in the Kenyan real estate sector by getting legitimate property agencies on board. But we do our due diligence enforcing high level quality control on all property listings bringing convenience and ease of use to the everyday user of our platform,” Karua stated.

This also serves the purpose of establishing trust in the online sector among customers, who are often wary of making purchases over the internet.

Instagram launches new time-lapse app

0

Instagram, a video sharing and photo service has unveiled a new time-lapse app dubbed Hyperlapse, which is currently available for Apple’s iOS.

GSMA supports Safaricom in row over embedded SIM cards

0

GSMA-LogoUK-based GSMA has waded into the embedded SIM card row between mobile network operator Safaricom and Equity bank which wants to roll out mobile banking and money transfer services in Kenya.

The Business Daily reports that GSMA wrote to the Communications Authority of Kenya warning that embedding the SIM card between a normal SIM card and the device could potentially allow for the harvesting and revealing sensitive data passing the system.

The association added that the thin SIM is capable of bypassing any security technologies, such as cryptographic keys to record sensitive data and make it available to third parties

“The overlay SIM has the potential to facilitate a man-in-the-middle attack by observing, collecting and revealing sensitive data such as PINs, ciphering and integrity keys,” the GSMA says in the advisory note to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

From the letter is it was established that the overlay SIM card could potentially facilitate a man-in-the-middle attack by observing, collecting and revealing sensitive data such as PINs, ciphering and integrity keys,” the GSMA says in the advisory note to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

Another danger is   unauthorised access to the primary SIM card, change of configuration settings and execution of actions without the explicit permission or knowledge of the mobile user.

The association now recommends that  the CA should use the services of an independent consultant to establish that any planned deployment of the thin SIM technology is free from the above risks before authorising its use

The GSMA is among mobile telecoms authorities from whom the CA had sought expert opinion as it prepares to make a decision on Safaricom’s petition challenging Equity bank use of ultra-thin SIM cards to rollout the mobile banking services through its subsidiary Finserve’s.

Last week the two parties were called into a meeting over the same but Francis Wangusi, the CA director-general is yet to rule on the matter or reply to GSMA saying that doing so will be preemptive.

Kopo Kopo Celebrates 4 Years | Launches External Bank Transfers for Merchants

0

Eddie Kwizera (NRM, Bufumbira East): “This proposal will never pass. We are going to block it in public interest. We are already paying taxes through airtime. The prices are inclusive of taxes. You can tax an income or transaction and not usage because owning a mobile phone is not a transaction. If they want, they can increase other taxes on usage but not to impose taxes on ownership.”

Our friends at Kopo Kopo forgot their birthday, it happens, especially when you put the client first and remember to send them happy birthday wishes and check on their businesses than your own welfare.

But anyway, two weeks late is not so late in Africa.

Incorporated in Kenya in August 2011, Kopo Kopo has enabled over ten thousand businesses in East Africa accept mobile money as a payment option through an earlier partnership it had with Safaricom to launch Lipa Na M-PESA.

Recently, the firm launched  external bank transfer to give businesses an option to either withdraw funds from their Kopo Kopo account to their external bank account.

Kopo Kopo said the move will make it easier for its merchants to pay suppliers, landlords and utility providers among others as the new service will simply transfer cash from a mobile wallet to an external bank account via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The merchants can access the money in 1-2 business days.

“We started Kopo Kopo to build a business ecosystem on top of the payments rails. 15,000+ businesses throughout Kenya currently accept Lipa na M-PESA via Kopo Kopo.  To serve them, we’ve built logic that enables us to put money in any bank account or M-PESA wallet in the country,” said Kopo Kopo. “Given that transferring money is one of our core competencies, we realized business-to-business and business-to-customer payments were the next frontier.”

Kopo Kopo aims to add functionality to allow merchants to transfer funds to an external M-PESA account to help them cut costs associated with writing cheques monthly, carrying cash which is unsafe and even cutting the spend on couriers.

In June this year, Kopo Kopo announced it had processed its 1,000,000th payment via Lipa na M-PESA, a process it launched in March 2012. The 1m mobile money payments processed were from the firm’s 15,000+ SMEs throughout Kenya. The firm also launched Grow With Us, a cash advance service to its clients.

Facebook to reduce click –baiting headlines

Facebook has announced that it will reduce click-baiting headlines on News Feed in a bid to help people find the relevant and most interesting posts while at the same time reduce spam and stories people do not want to see.

Basically, “Click-baiting” is when a publisher posts a link with a headline that encourages people to click to see more, without telling them much information about what they will see.

Posts like these tend to get a lot of clicks, which means that these posts get shown to more people, and get shown higher up in News Feed.

“However, when we asked people in an initial survey what type of content they preferred to see in their News Feeds, 80% of the time people preferred headlines that helped them decide if they wanted to read the full article before they had to click through.”

“Over time, stories with “click-bait” headlines can drown out content from friends and Pages that people really care about,” said By Khalid El-Arini, Research Scientist and Joyce Tang, Product Specialist on the company’s blog.

Facebook will be looking at the amount of time spent reading an article away from Facebook as a way of determining what looks like clik-bait  and if people click on an article and spend time reading it, it suggests they clicked through to something valuable. If they click through to a link and then come straight back to Facebook, it suggests that they didn’t find something that they wanted.

“If With this update we will start taking into account whether people tend to spend time away from Facebook after clicking a link, or whether they tend to come straight back to News Feed when we rank stories with links in them,” said El-Arini.

The people who will be affected by this move the most are a small set of publishers most who are frequently posting links with click-bait headlines that many people don’t spend time reading after they click through may see their distribution as they see a decrease in the next few months.

“We’re making these changes to ensure that click-bait content does not drown out the things that people really want to see on Facebook,” read another part of the blog.

Facebook will also look at the ratio of people clicking on the content compared to people discussing and sharing it with their friends. If a lot of people click on the link, but relatively few people click Like, or comment on the story when they return to Facebook, this will suggest that people didn’t click through to something that was valuable to them.

The social media site is also planning to prioritize showing links in the link-format, and show fewer links shared in captions or status updates a breakaway from the earlier format where people share a link on Facebook and it appears in News Feed with a large picture, a headline and some text that gives context on the link.

“We’ve found that people often prefer to click on links that are displayed in the link format (which appears when you paste a link while drafting a post), rather than links that are buried in photo captions. The link format shows some additional information associated with the link, such as the beginning of the article, which makes it easier for someone to decide if they want to click through. This format also makes it easier for someone to click through on mobile devices, which have a smaller screen,” said the two on the post.

According to them the best way to share a link after these updates will be to use the link format as their studies have revealed that these posts have received twice as many clicks compared to links embedded in photo captions.

They now recommend you use the story type that best fits the message that you want to tell – whether that’s a status, photo, link or video.

The bank raised KSh3.63 billion in additional capital by offering some 22 million rights to its shareholders at a discounted price of KSh165, which was subscribed at a record 440 percent.

Last week, DTB’s shares were trading at an all-time high of KSh260 per share, resulting in a capital appreciation of nearly 60 percent over the price at which the rights were issued.

DTB Group Chairman Abdul Samji said that the that the Rights Issue subscription of 440 percent was recording breaking for DTB which has undertaken three rights issues previously and also for the NSE as no previous rights issues undertaken at the bourse over at least the past ten years it had achieved such a high level of subscription.

The funds raised will further strengthen our ability to achieve our long term strategic objectives anchored on deepening our presence in Eastern African and expanding to new markets in Sub Saharan Africa.”

In line with the Information Memorandum, supporting the rights issue, the funds raised will be used mainly to continue with DTB’s expansion plans and explore additional opportunities to further strengthen its presence in Kenya and the sub region, through its affiliates in Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi, as well as explore new investment opportunities in surrounding markets.

This has enabled DTB to use the capital markets to expand its footprint and brand across the region. The latest capital raise will be used to bolster its core capital” stated Njoroge.

He added that the success of the DTB rights issue, signals the great demand from domestic and international investors for investment opportunities in the capital markets.

We Need $430m to End the Ebola Outbreak, WHO says

EBOLA

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that we need more than $430 million to end the Ebola menace. The plan sets a goal of reversing the trend in new cases within two months, and stopping all transmission in six to nine months. It requires funding by governments, development banks, the private sector and in-kind contributions, according to the document obtained by Bloomberg News.

“There is reason to be concerned about whether the proposed resources would be adequate,” said Barry Bloom, a public health professor at Harvard University who also questioned whether the funds would be made available face enough, and whether the organization’s latest plan would ensure the expertise from WHO that is needed.

WHO criticized The European Commission and aid groups including Doctors Without Borders have criticized the WHO for a lack of leadership in coordinating the fight against the outbreak.

“It’s not a question of incompetence or complacency,” according to Morrison, who said the WHO should be able to raise the money needed. It’s the fact we’re catching up with the unknown, and its way ahead of us.

Treatment centers More than half the cost will be needed for the treatment, isolation and referral centers that are bearing the brunt of the epidemic, according to the WHO plan. Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are among the world’s poorest countries, and weak health systems combined with a lack of experienced health-care workers has contributed to the epidemic, the WHO has said.

The WHO this month declared Ebola in West Africa a public health emergency of international concern. A separate outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed as many as 13 people, the government in that country said on Monday.

In West Africa, more than 240 health care workers have been infected and 120 have died, the agency said in a statement yesterday. Among them is Abraham Borbor, the deputy chief medical officer of Liberia’s John F. Kennedy Medical Center, who died despite being treated with Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc.’s experimental ZMapp medicine, the nation’s information minister said.

Experimental drug Borbor was one of three Liberian health-care workers being treated with ZMapp, the same drug that was used on two American aid workers who were evacuated to the US after being infected in Liberia.

Clearly, a massively scaled and coordinated international response is needed to support affected and at-risk countries. The document has been shared with the WHO’s partners for comment and will be published once their feedback has been received, Chaib said.

The final document will include a country- by-country plan for dealing with the outbreak, she said.
