0
1376349_647230275314946_171200197_nNigeria’s new early stage accelerator, Passion Incubator, is set to go live this April 14, in a move to provide the country’s innovative entrepreneurs with the most critical resources needed to launch lean startups.
Founded by Olufunbi Falayi and Taiwo Ajetunmobi, the accelerator aims to identify passionate entrepreneurs with commercially viable business solutions that solve large scale problems and according to its site, it aims to achieve its mission via basic entrepreneurship training,  product development, providing work space to the startups and mentoring and connecting them to VC funds.
The accelerator says it will accept five or less startups into its accelerator class and provide them with a 1 month period of intense training, 3 additional months of seminar based training, and a full year’s access to its hub work space. It will also pair each founder team with a mentor. These, according to them will provide the founder teams with the most critical resources for them to launch lean startups, grow quickly, and institutionalize their success.
TechMoran will publish a follow-up interview on this soon.
Just this year alone, in quarter one, Nigeria has seen several incubators launching and making it the continent top new place to launch a startup.

Green living on the rise in emerging markets

lamudi

The real estate marketplace giant, Lamudi , says that in the future there will be a strong growth in the number of eco-friendly properties listed on its platform following the publication of a report outlining green construction trends.

The most recent World Green Building Trends report from renowned industry intelligence company McGraw Hill highlights that 51 percent of the worldwide construction industry expect to be developing more than 60 percent of their properties in an eco-friendly way by 2015, compared with only 28 percent of industry firms holding this expectation in 2012.

The most substantial increases in green construction activity are expected to be seen in the emerging markets – more than doubling their green construction activity by 2015.

Paul Philipp Hermann, Co-Founder at Lamudi, said: “The findings of this report confirm what we already believe – that demand for green living is not just a Western but a global trend. The fact that the construction of green housing in emerging markets is due to double by 2015 makes it easy for us to predict that the number of eco-friendly property listings on our platform will increase exponentially in the coming years.”

The green construction trend has already established itself in the Mexican property market, where the availability of eco-friendly properties has increased dramatically since the introduction of Green Mortgage Programmes in 2007.

Hermann explained: “We can only expect that in a short time this will be replicated in other emerging markets in Africa and Asia. We are excited by the prospect that Lamudi will be there to connect people to the possibility of affordable, green living.”

Kenyan Banks Behind Schedule For Secure ATM Switch

0

With only 12 days to the deadline, only 40 per cent of about 1.5 million ATM card users have been issued new chip-based cards which bankers were to acquire to avoid the risk of rampant fraud.

The use of magnetic cards in Kenya have increasingly had fraud cases occur since they can easily get cloned leaving the industry in a compromising situation not knowing who to pay for losses arising from fraudulent transactions made possible by non-compliance. “Liability is ordinarily on the bank that has not complied” said Kenya Bankers Association Chief Executive, Habil Olaka.

The entire banking system will continue to suffer losses should banks fail to migrate to the Euro pay Mastercard Visa (EMV) platform on time which are less prone to fraudulent transactions and was supposed to be a three phase switchover since April last year. All cards were to become EMV compliant by September 30, 2013 according to plan and with a completion date of December 31, 2013 by Point of Sale (POS).

Card migration made the last phase of the switchover that is to be completed by end of this month with banks expected to issue their customers with new chip technology cards and migrate them to the new system, completing the switchover.

KBA is however in the process of finding out how prepared the banks are.

Motorola Reveals The Moto 360 Smart Watch

moto360

Silence doesn’t mean that one is not working; Motorola has shown off its Moto 360 smart watch and is set to be released this year.

This masterpiece is one of the first devices to work with Google’s new Android Wear OS. Sadly the technical details are yet to be known as they have not yet been released.

Motorola said that the watch will accept Google Glass style voice commands, and with a “twist of the wrist” users can see who’s emailing or calling, access the calendar, or social media posts.

This gadget will be available in a variety of styles globally in June 2014, of course beginning with USA.

Twitter & Whatsapp Will Control Business in Kenya In 2014/2015, Report

0

twitter

The Nendo 2014/2015 Social Media Trend Report says that Social TV, The Rise of WhatsApp and Social Me-Devolution will be trends that one cannot afford to ignore in 2014 and 2015.

The report, published by Mark Kaigwa, Founder of Nendo Ventures in partnership with OdipoDev, builds on the lessons from East Africa’s most active Twitter city, Nairobi, and the social media landscape in 2013 to present predictions for the next two years. It specifically cites events such as the March 2013 General Elections, The Westgate Mall Attack and Kenya at 50celebrations as key highlights.

The report illustrated Social Me-Devolution trend for 2014 where governors, senators and municipal public servants will take to Twitter among other social networks to engage citizens as well as the Kenyan Diaspora, whose numbers currently stand at 3 million, to encourage local, hyper-local and regional investment.

Another Kenyan trend is WhatsApp instant-messaging application; this application will set the pace for more interactive communication in customer service, business and traditional media.

“Whatsapp changes everything for the region. Mainstream media is finding ways to engage viewers through encouraging submission of rich media such as images, text, audio and user-submitted video,”said Samer Ahmed of Odipo Dev.

On Device Research, Whatsapp became the leading social messaging app and overtook Facebook Messenger globally in 2013. It is also expected that newsrooms would continually ask their audiences for images and videos and perhaps in 2014 for audio submissions after its inclusion in the app.

Samer added: “Although it still doesn’t fully solve the problem of service delivery, Whatsapp can be the difference in giving consumers a straightforward way to express the quality of service they receive.”

Further, the Age of the “Second Screen” or Social TV is where experts agree that the public will no longer watch television without a second screen such as a phone, a tablet, a laptop, or a desktop computer nearby.

The total number of Internet users in Kenya as at the CCK’s last report is 11.6 million Internet subscribers. Kenyans on Facebook, according to the Facebook Ad Planner, remain at 3.8 million. Twitter, though growing in popularity, is still behind Facebook with approximately 500,000 users.

Nigeria’s Termii.com Nears Public Launch As Africa’s First Social Business Network

1
internalcomm2Though the amount Termi.com has raised is not significant, Emmanuel Tolulope, the founder of the site told TechMoran that it will see them launch to the public and hire some more people to help it launch out big.
Termed as Africa’s premier social-business networking company “Termii launched in Nigeria last year December and the founder rebranded from FriendzDiary to Termii Networks and raised some $6000 to help him build the site.
” The new round is from another angel investor, Mr Dimeji Joseph who is a telecom’s expert and works at MTN Nigeria. The investment round is valued at $7180 plus working environment as an asset valued at an additional $1k making a total of $8180,”
Tolulope says.
termieeThe funds will be used for campaigns, working tools, hackathons and hiring of staff. This round of funding will also help them launch to the public this April, as it has been running beta to fix bugs and incorporate itself as a public limited company in the country. We are pretty sure you want to say there is a proliferation of social networks in the world today, and even back here in Nigeria and Africa at large but Termii is not giving up. The online social networking startup is mixing business and social to be the go-to place for both social-business users and is setting up its cloud network with seamless and advanced UI and networking features.
Though the idea looks promising, raising less than $10,000 is not good for business and the startup is likely to struggle financially to pay its staff or run its technology and offices, or it will have to go out and raise some more again to help it keep going; but we are hopping several accelerators launch to work with such young minds in Africa to achieve their dreams.
However, Tolulope says the firm is not in dire need for funding at this time.
“The investment covers working tools while working environment as added asset . We are not in deep financial need, so we are not interested in giving large chunks of shares to investors and that’s also why we are not chasing after VC’s, when the time is right….we would involve vc’s but for now we are ok with our angels.”

Lessons from the Failed Immigration Screening Exercise in Nigeria.

0

We all heard the news of the immigration screening test held in Nigeria recently. We saw the shocking photos and we read the morbid happenings. You would have to be living under a hole not to have heard of the latest showcase of the intense degree of unemployment in Nigeria. But if you are still uninformed, allow me brief you.

The NIS registered over 2million applicants for a screening test, cramped them into different venues scattered over the 36 states of the federation, allowed them to scramble for the examination papers and then watched as they clawed each other…in some places, to death. According to the Vanguard, about 16 people have been reported dead from the stampede in the Lagos and Abuja exam centers.

Nigerian Immigration service

What is the expression on your face? If you’re still in shock that sixteen people died during that chaos of an exam, then this extra juicy news will further jerk you. Each of those applicants registered with the sum of N1000 to be able to attend that show. Yes, you read this right! They paid to be allowed to die. And the show organizers raked home close to 2billion naira from the sorry, sorry show. Over 2 million applicants X N1000 registration fee = A bulging bank account for the NIS.

Since we’re still on figures, let me tell you another story about figures, this time they’re made off poor Nigerian students. The UNI-X (name of university withheld) hostel ballot system operates in such a system that each undergraduate student seeking a hostel buys a scratch card and logs on to the university hostel allocation site in order to gamble. The gamble is this: Over 20,000 students are applying for hostel spaces at the same time and the current hostels cannot accommodate up to 30% of that population. So all student hostel gamblers know that there is a huge possibility that they might not get the hostels but they go on and gamble because well, what are their other options? To dole out 200,000 for an off-campus accommodation? And again the organisers of the gamble game walk away with their huge profits. (20,000 X 1000 = N2000000).

Immigration 2

Hmmmm…..

I finally thought of a statement that surmises all my feelings and it goes: What the h*** is this? Pardon my language( i never swear) but that is the exact description of the expression on my face.

What in the world is wrong with Nigeria? Is Nigeria a man with many hungry wives and children that still wants to marry more?

Don’t bother answering. Nobody can.

As the events of this immigration exam unfolded, many revelations sprung to light- some shocking, some expected but all necessary for us to understand where we are and how far back that position is. So, here goes my observations based on the NIS exam:

I want to comment on the outrageousness of the unemployment situation in Nigeria but some people might feel I am not qualified to pen down the despair and xxx that the unemployed feel. After all, I have never written a job test before. While still in the university, I was already making between N30000 to N40000 working on both graduate and undergraduate projects and immediately after graduation, I started a laundry service with a friend. My first white collar job came knocking while I was still building the business and I just simply slid into the office chair.

So, I truly might not have experienced the kind of hopelessness that unemployed graduates feel but I have observed a real pattern in this unemployment issue and I’m willing to share it with anyone who cares to listen. It is this:

  • Not everyone can get a white collar job.

Nigeria has told us that. Previous interview exams that featured large-turn ups of unemployed graduates for few positions have proved it and the immigration exam has sealed it. Until our nation develops itself to be able to accumulate the thousands of graduates it churns out each year, we will still continue to see starched shirts, carrying around files and knocking on company doors or worse, dead people in an interview stampede.

  • Skills will pay you better than a white collar job.

A friend of mine who graduated with a 2:2 was referred to someone in Shell for a possible job and after waiting for 4 hours, he was told by the Shell big man that he could not be employed because of his degree. He even added that my friend should have studied English so that he could have graduated with at least a 2.1, which was a more employable degree. But I have other friends who graduated with that attractive 2.1 and are still scouring the job market. And my friend? He currently owns an online creative agency and makes more from two projects than the average banker makes every month from working from thirty days.

  • Everything is an opportunity for politicians: The APC chieftains

It is not hard to see why the APC group will immediately “rejoice” at such a happening. The event is a perfect opportunity for them to jump up and point hands at the ruling party, PDP for allowing such a thing to happen. But I say: No, APC. Sit down! We can’t really say you could have done any better. You shouldn’t dishonor the dead by trying to use their deaths as a stepping stone to ascend the Nigerian governmental throne.

  • PR is twisted: This headline on Vanguard said “Immigration records smooth recruitment exercise, says report”

It’s ironic coming from me right? After-all PR is what I do for a living.

Smooth? Really? I was confused. Smooth stampede or smooth deaths?? The Minister actually came out to say that the immigration exam where over 16 people were reported dead was successful.

As we ponder on the events of the last few days and watch the fiasco that will play out at the top to make us forget the events, we can only but hope, dream and do what we can for the future of our country…Nigeria

BarCamps are open, participatory workshop-events, the content of which is provided by participants. The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and were related to open source technologies, social software, and open data formats. An unconference is a participant-driven meeting that tries to avoid one or more aspects of a conventional conference, such as high fees, sponsored presentations, and top-down organization.
The Mombasa Tech Community is set to grow and become as vibrant as the Nairobi, and by hosting such events, will see great minds from Nairobi head down to share their experiences with their counterparts at the coast.

Huawei Wants To Manufacture Dual OS Smartphones

1

os

Huawei has its eyes in the future, now it is working on manufacturing phones that will be able to run on both Android and Windows; a dual OS.

So far the company has more Android phones than Windows Phones and has indicated in the past that their market share doesn’t warrant significant effort yet.

“We are still committed to making Windows Phone devices,” Shao Yang, Huawei’s Chief Marketing Officer told TrustedReviews, but added “We think the dual OS can be a new choice for the consumer. It will be on sale in the US in Q2.”

A dual-OS smartphone might enable more BYOD usage where a person prefers Android for personal use, but has to have Windows Phone OS for work purposes.

“If it is Windows only, maybe people will not find it as easy a decision to buy the phone. If they have the Android and Windows together, you can change it as you wish and it is much easier for people to choose Windows Phone,” added Yang.

Booking.com Gets Agressive in Kenya with New Country Office

0

 800_booking.yeah-pr-still-5

Online accommodation booking site Booking.com, part of Priceline.com and with over 625,000 room nights booked on the site daily and 2.8 million rooms every week, is strengthening its Africa operations with new country offices in Kenya.

Booking already has a presence in Morrocco, South Africa and Egypt but the new country office in Kenya shows the country’s growth and attractiveness for travelers. It’s also a good sign confirming the increasing uptake of internet in the country and an influx of both leisure and business travelers to the country.

Established in 1996, Booking.com is based in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and has over 115 offices in over 50 countries around the world. The site promises lowest prices on just about any type of property. It is also available in over 40 languages, and has nearly 500,000 properties in 200 plus countries.

At the moment, Booking.com is hiring an Account Manager and a Hotel Coordinator for its new Kenyan office to sign up hotels in Kenya,  support the hotels with Booking.com system and promote the Booking.com BV brand name and its online reservation services to hotels.

Launching a local office will put SleepOut, Jovago and SafariNow’s StayNow on toes, in a market where there have been less international influence.

Apart from Booking.com, South Africa’s Naspers is also on a hiring binge in Kenya for its MIH East Africa classifieds operations, we are not sure if the firm is hiring for OLX or is planning to launch another site but we are hopping its a move to power OLX campaigns in the region.

GSMA & Mobile Network Operators Agree on Network Infrastructure Sharing to Up Broadband Access

0

GSMA-LogoSenior leaders from mobile operator in the world, such as Christian de Faria, CEO Africa of Bharti Airtel, Ahmad Julfar, Group CEO of Etisalat Group, Sifiso Dabengwa, CEO and President of MTN Group, Dr. Nasser Marafih, Group CEO of Ooredoo Group and Marc Rennard, Senior Executive Vice President, Africa, Middle East and Asia for Orange, Serpil Timuray, CEO, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific Region for Vodafone Group and Scott Gegenheimer, CEO, Zain Group have agreed with the GSMA to share their network infrastructure in a bid to help connect the region’s population.

The members, who collectively manage 76 mobile network operations across 47 countries in Africa and the Middle East, where many of the unconnected population live in rural areas, serve over  506 million customers and the agreement to share network infrastructure will have a profound impact of mobile broadband and Internet services on the citizens of both regions.

The participating operators have made this commitment in order to provide Internet and mobile broadband access to unserved rural communities and drive down the cost of mobile services for all sections of the population.

“We are greatly encouraged by the shared vision of mobile operators and the common urgency to find solutions that will drive down the cost of mobile and Internet services and help connect the unconnected,” said Anne Bouverot, Director General, GSMA. “Unique mobile subscriber penetration is only 40 per cent in Africa and the Middle East, lower than the global average of 47 per cent, so we need to work together to expand the reach of mobile.”

“This cooperation demonstrates that the industry is committed to innovating in order to serve the billions living in the rural areas,” said Manoj Kohli, Managing Director, Bharti Enterprises and Chair of the Public Policy Committee of the GSMA board, who also supports the initiative. “We call on governments to support and encourage the commercial infrastructure sharing arrangements that we aim to propose.”

The GSMA’s position is that telecom regulatory frameworks should encourage flexible commercial sharing arrangements and facilitate access to government-owned assets at preferential rates to help speed up the roll-out of new networks and support the business case to extend mobile networks into rural areas.

Kenya Will Automate Public Payments By April To Curb Revenue Outflows

0

bigstockphoto_internet_security_98254

By April 2nd this year, Kenyans will start making their payments electronically as the country’s ICT Cabinet Secretary; Fred Matiang’i says that automated payments will be completed by then.

The payment is focused on improving accountability, efficiency and transparency in Government transactions as well as preventing revenue leaks.

“The National Treasury will publish regulations to operationalize the Public Payment Act before the electronic payment system starts operating; the Government has done so much in terms of digitizing its payment system. What we want to do now is to ensure that this process is institutionalized,” said Matiang’i.

According to Kenya’s Auditor General, Government ministries and departments failed to account for over Sh338 billion of the total Government spending for the 2011-2012 fiscal year; adding that only six percent, which is KSh55.2 billion of the Sh920 billion that the Government spent during the financial year was fully accounted for.

An additional expenditure of Sh561 billion was not supported by adequate documents, thus the move to automate the payment system to seal loopholes for corruption. The auditor said a third of the 252 financial statements of institutions audited were either deliberately misstated or revealed fraudulent expenditure, according to the Auditor General.

The new payments system would therefore help track Government transactions electronically hence eliminate fraud.

Samsung Shows Off A Phone Case For The Visually Impaired

Samsung is bound to expand its territories and become a favorite of many; reason behind this is that it has unveiled a cover for one of its smartphones that offers tactile feedback for people with vision impairment.

This Ultrasonic Cover allows users to detect obstacles and navigate unfamiliar places by sending an alert through a vibration or TTS feedback, (cool, huh?)

Samsung said that by holding the cover in front of the user, it can enhance a visually impaired user’s awareness of their surroundings by sensing the presence of a person or object up to 2 meters away.

The cover isn’t really ultrasonic, its just a fancy name for the cover.

ICT AGENCY OPENS UP TO MORE FINANCIERS IN NEW PASHA SCHEME.

0

The Kenya ICT Authority is on a working progress to open up its small business programme to more financiers ending an arrangement where it previously worked with a single bank project.

This comes as the authority is set to restart issuing subsidized loans in June for setting up digital centres after controversy stalled the scheme. The authority will henceforth use multiple banks in loan provision as opposed to previous engagement with sole financier Family Bank.

Sole financier model was restrictive and thus limited the choice of applicants in terms of where to get loans; however the authority will now work with about three banks in which the ICT authority is deliberating to further cut the interest rate among other changes in the earlier financing model.

The fund programme dubbed Pasha established in 2011 looks into digital villages; electronic shops, cyber cafes, printing bureaus and recording studios that could offer agency banking and mobile money services. The initiative however experienced setbacks previously and plans to conduct a pilot for a new model to avoid further problems.

The soon to be revamped stall project will have revenues generated from the businesses translate to better welfare with the digital villages operating under a franchisor, a firm which will procure pre-negotiated products on behalf of Pasha managers.

“We will list a number of products that will be mandatory for Pasha managers to include in their centres. This will ensure standardization and coordination of the Pasha, making it easy to manage them,” said project manager Kwame Shiroya.

Will Nigerians Pay $45 For a Photo? Jason Njoku and Foto think so

3

Last week I was working with my friend John Iseghohi on a funny graphic for a private forum we both belong to, and we did a search for “beautiful black woman wearing heels”.

Usually the process flow of such a search would go from a normal google search to much more advanced searches in image banks like ‘istockphotos’ and ‘shutterstock’, this particular search came up with some interesting results but the results were not just “Nigerian/black enough”, so we had to settle for one of the images we found on google.

Today, Jason Njoku, (described with terms as serial entrepreneur, lucky guy, bastard, etc but in my own books simply “A hardworking entrepreneur that is showing his knowledge of his environment”) on his blog announced the launch of a new platform Foto.com.ng which according to the description of the website is…oops, couldn’t a find a description, but is basically a platform that will help solve the problem of finding culturally. environmentally and ethnically relevant stock images or simply put, “amazing black photography”. Spark/Jason have invested $70,000 into Foto, with a further $80,000 to be spent in the course of 6 months.

Foto.com.ng hasn’t entirely been a secret, from the team(Nuisinic photos did the photography for the first iROKO brand ambassador campaign in the early iROKO days-not sure I got the spelling of Nuisinic right though) to what they want to build, a simple check of the Spark website or if you are a regular consumer of content from Jason’s blog(Yes I am), then you will already know that Foto was going to launch soon.

I did a quick run through of the platform and search experience on the website is currently “shitty” but knowing Jason I expect it to improve quickly, search is one thing that will heavily drive discovery, organic search and on site search will be very important.

Foto.com.ng

The current thing that raises questions for me is the current pricing and forms the basis for the title ‘Will Nigerians Pay $45 For an Image? Jason Njoku and Foto think so”, taking a look at the pricing of Shutterstock and istockphotos, we will see that that the Foto team’s pricing is around the same range, give and take a few dollars, but will the average Nigerian pay between $15-$45 dollars for an image? Especially one that is for a funny forum? Well time will tell. If I need an image for a billboard that will cost me $40,000 to create and mount, then $25 will seem negligible to me. The real winner for Foto will really be in the bigger subscription packages (brands/companies with everyday photography needs would easily subscribe to this), like one I have used on shutterstock before; $249 for a full month with 25 downloads a day which brings down my single image price heavily

Another big issue that Jason and the foto team will face is with piracy ( Jason and iROKOtv seem to be really kicking hard with fighting piracy in the movies industry), some creative(illegal) photoshoping(like what I have done below)and the watermark will come off smoothly. Nigerian graphic designers can also be  “carefree”, I have seen Newspaper adverts that still had a shutterstock logo on the image.

Foto Pic

Well it’s the early days and I am certainly happy to see another fun startup from Nigeria. With iROKOtv, Jason is actually proving that the subscription model can work, revenue streams from Nigeria(I once used to look at this data) may not be that much but I believe they are certainly growing, do you think Foto.com.ng can really be monetized in Nigeria?

Mozilla KILLS FIREFOX BROWSER FOR WINDOWS 8 METRO.

0

Mozilla has announced no plans of shipping a final version of the Mozilla Firefox browser for the Windows 8 Metro because of the relatively miniscule number of users on the platform.

The platform has not hosted more than 1,000 users pre-testing the beta version of Mozilla but has seen millions of people test pre-release versions of Firefox on other platforms. The company has recorded notable progress since they shipped Firefox 1.0 and now requires marshalling their forces appropriately considering the massive scale of competitors.

Mozilla launched its Metro effort in 2012 which broke through Microsoft’s controls and began developing Firefox for x86-based versions of the platform. However, the company didn’t develop a version of Firefrox for windows RT using ARM chips after the it complained that Microsoft was locking Windows users to its own browser.

“This opens up the risk that Metro might take off tomorrow and we’d have to scramble to catch back up , but that’s a better risk for us to take than the real costs of investment in a platform our users have shown little sign of adobting” said Firefox vice president Johnathan Nightingale.
