0
140205175255-serah-kanyua-clothes-closet49-horizontal-galleryKenya’s Closet49, an online marketplace for trendy, fashionable, unique and eclectic clothing used by over 9000 sellers is looking for $50,000 to fuel its local expansion plans in Kenya as the Internet business become popular in the leading East Africa economy.
The startup founded by Serah Kanyua and Irene Abagi and backed by Africa-focused seed investment fund 88mph said it had sold over 2,500 pieces in 2013 and was steadily moving into profitability even though it needs to reach more Kenyans.
Speaking to TechMoran just days after being  profiled by CNN ‘African Start-Up’, a program that shines spotlight on great startups and entrepreneurs in the continent’ Kanyua said all Closet49 profits are being reinvested back into the company as it hopes to expand and reach more users locally.
140205175539-closer49-customers-house-horizontal-gallery“At the moment we are working on upgrading our website to enable us to add more features and reach more clients across Kenya and eventually East Africa. The funds we want to raise will enable us to implement our countrywide expansion plan.”
The fashion marketplace wants to connect the buyers and sellers in the country to latest fashion items from the trendiest upcoming designers and traders that are  available online for easy search, find, click buy and make payment  using M-pesa. Once the customer receives their purchase and  is satisfied, Closet49 releases the funds to the trader.  The founder says the seed fund they raised from 88mph helped them scale up their services and get the word out away from just their living room. It helped them also get more stock on the platform. Though the journey has not been all rosy, Kanyua says the future is bright. With more money raised the firm can reach more people and if they raise double the better.
Closet49 is not the only form that received seed backing from 88mph, fast growing Kenyan entertainment news site Ghafla!, music distribution platform Mdundo, African taxi hailing app Zapacab, gaming startup Gamsole and  football site Futaa are just a handful of the many startups that 88mph has funded.

Middle East and Africa Set for World’s Fastest Mobile Data Traffic Growth

0

mobile_dataMiddle East and Africa are the least attractive whenever surveys on mobile data are carried out. With opportunism, most reports indicate the region will be the most attractive in a near future, but this near future might not be as far as thousands think as smartphone manufacturers come up with affordable smartphones specific for the region.

A new Cisco study indicates that the Middle East and Africa (MEA) is posting the world’s-fastest mobile data traffic growth rate from 2013-2018. The report, dubbed the Cisco® Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2013 to 2018 shows that from last year,  mobile data traffic in the region will be increasing 14-fold by 2018.

According to the report, the mobile data traffic growth is expected to be driven by the world’s-fastest uptake of Internet Protocol version 6 (Ipv6) -capable smartphones and tablets, with a CAGR of 35 percent, rising from 133 million in 2013 to almost 598 million in 2018. In addition,  uptake of smart wearable devices like watches, glasses, and fitness trackers will also increase from 700,000 in 2013 to 8 million in 2018.

Mobile use on Facebook-578-80Fady Younes, Regional Sales Manager and Client Director, Cisco said, “As our personal and business lives become increasingly mobile, MEA is really coming to the fore as early, widespread adopters of the latest smartphone and wearable technology. Driven by one of the most tech-receptive and youthful populations on the planet, this is a region that is now extremely well-placed to lead technological innovation in all aspects of daily life and business, leveraging the emerging power of the ‘Internet of Everything’ and faster mobile data networks.”

Other highlights include the  increase in the MEA mobile data traffic, an estimated 1.49 Exabytes per month by 2018 – the equivalent of 372 million DVDs each month or 4,105 million text messages each second. The regions mobile data traffic is also expected to grow 2 times faster than region’s fixed IP traffic from 2013 to 2018 while the regions mobile data traffic will account for 39% of region’s fixed and mobile data traffic by 2018, up from 10% in 2013. In MEA, 36% of mobile connections will be ‘smart’ connections by 2018, up from 10% in 2013 and 90% of mobile data traffic will be ‘smart’ traffic by 2018, up from 76% in 2013.

However, looking at global trends,  mobile data traffic growth will be driven by four trends: mobile users growing from 4.1 billion in 2013 to 4.9 billion in 2018, mobile Internet connections growing from 7 billion in 2013 to 10 billion in 2018, mobile video growing from 59 percent of mobile data traffic in 2013 to 69 percent in 2018, and mobile speeds nearly doubling from 1.4 Mbps in 2013 to 2.5 Mbps in 2018.

The report also adds that global machine-to-machine connections, which use wired and Wi-Fi systems to communicate with devices, will grow from 5 percent of mobile-connected devices and 1 percent of mobile data traffic in 2013, to 20 percent of mobile-connected devices and 6 percent of mobile data traffic in 2018.

By the end of this year, there will be more mobile-connected devices in the world than people, and by 2018 there will be more than 10 billion mobile-connected devices and nearly 1.4 mobile devices per capita.

A-new-mobile-Wave-by-Sams-006The report also adds that people are increasingly watching video on these mobile-connected devices with global traffic growing 14-fold from 2013 to 2018, and will represent 69 percent of total mobile traffic in 2018. Declining in mobile traffic from 2013 to 2018 will be web and data applications (28 to 17 percent), streaming audio (14 to 11 percent), and file sharing (four to three percent).

Not to be left behind in this mobile data traffic, communications firms are deploying ultrafast 4G mobile networks, and off-loading mobile data onto Wi-Fi or small cell networks and MEA is not being left behind.  4G. connections in MEA will grow from 3.6 million in 2013 to 86.6 million in 2018 while Global mobile traffic offloaded will grow from 45 percent in 2013 to 52 percent in 2018.

“In MEA, mobile data traffic will continue its truly remarkable growth, which is indicative of mobility becoming a critical characteristic of almost every network experience, and the value consumers and businesses alike place on it. It is also representative of the immense opportunities ahead for service providers who sit at the center of the Internet of Everything,” concluded Younes.

Rwanda’s Sokkaa.com Brings English Premier League Home to its African Fans

0

footaRwanda’s Sokkaa is an online soccer community specifically for African fans founded to give the fans EPL and European teams but in a variety of languages spoken across East Africa.

The Kigali-based Sokkaa has reporters who create news and match reports about influential teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal, but tailor the content to fans in East Africa, writing in English, French, Swahili and Kinyarwanda (their home language). They also plan to start a debate with funny soccer images and have just launched our YouTube channel Sokkaa TV.

Founded  at the end of 2013 by  Thom Harvey, a serial entrepreneur with a nuber of startups across food and tech industries in the UK and some consultancy work with SME’s and recently yfcrwanda.com – an online peace-building magazine for Never Again Rwanda. Sokkaa is uniquely African-focused.

TechMoran caught up with Harvey and this is what he told us.

What inspired you to launch Sokkaa.com?

On a previous business trip to Kigali, I went to a local bar to watch an EPL match and was enthralled by the passion the match generated. I met some young local guys and it turned out that they were budding reporters with a passion for EPL soccer. From this I decided built a beta site, which was originally called eplafrica.com, and asked them to start reporting in English and Kinyarwanda.

We began gaining traction and after a conversation with my friend Jason Njoku, a Nigerian internet entrepreneur and founder of iROKO, I decided to rebrand the site. With this, Sokkaa was born.sokkaaaWhat moved you to launch it with all the soccer sites around the world?

While there are other soccer sites around the world, we haven’t found any that specifically tailor their content to EPL fans in Africa. I have never seen such passion for soccer as I see in Africa, so I find this extraordinary.

Do you have any affiliations or partnerships or funding?

Sokkaa has an Angel investor based in the financial services industry in London. We are currently looking for affiliates – in particular for our coverage of the upcoming World Cup, and will aim to get VC funding towards the end of 2014.

How big is the Sokkaa team?

We are a small team of 10 at the moment, but growing everyday. We have an office in Kigali and headquarters in London.

Is there anything new you are going to offer readers apart from just news?

We have some exciting features that we aim to build around our key content but this is still in development – watch this space!

Where do you expect your business to be in 2 years?

We have grown exponentially since launch and so far we are still in beta stage without key features on the site – I expect us to be competing for the title of the most recognized football site in East Africa within the next year.

Any plans to expand into the entire continent?

Perhaps in the future – we have a long way to go until we are ready to take on the big boys in Nigeria and South Africa…in the words of Jose Mourinho “we are a little horse”.

Thom Harvey
Thom Harvey, founder Sokkaa.com

Before Kigali, I had previously spent time in Lagos, and to compare the two cities would be impossible. Lagos was exciting but brutal – Kigali is much more user friendly!

I spend time in our Kigali office every 6 weeks or so and I love Rwanda. It has been a pleasure to work in, and every time I leave, I look forward to my return.

What is the future of soccer in your city?

Sokkaa is the future. We just want to tell those out there who want to startup to test ideas cheaply, know your context and listen to feedback.

A new report by The Helix Institute of Digital Finance on mobile money agent networks, as part of its cutting-edge Agent Network Accelerator (ANA) research project indicates that mobile money agents in Uganda are pervasive and profitable but face large scale issues of fraud, service downtime and robbery.

Dubbed the Uganda Agent Network report, the report was carried out in collaboration between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and MicroSave, is the largest research project on agent networks in the world, designed to determine what drives their success and scale.

According to the report, there seem to be significant opportunities for providers to expand the networks to rural areas far beyond the financial infrastructure, increase the quality of agent support, and offer more products at the agent level.

Kimathi Githachuri, Head of The Helix Institute of Digital Finance and former Head of Warid Pesa (before the acquisition by Airtel Uganda), said, “The insights from Helix’s Uganda Report are very critical and present some unique findings which will assist us to develop standards and best practices leading to scalable and profitable models for building agent networks around the world.”

The report is based on over 2,000 mobile money agent surveys carried out in 2013 all over the country and focuses on the country’s factors for success in agent network management and what the industry needs to focus on in the next stages of development.

Helix says it will use the findings in the reports in its training courses offered through The Helix Institute of Digital Finance, the first training institute explicitly designed to equip industry leaders with effective strategies and powerful tools to build, manage, and grow mobile money agent networks in their respective markets.

Uganda is among eight African and Asian countries participating in the world-class research project, selected for their contribution to the development of digital financial services globally. The other African countries surveyed in the four-year project include Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria. In Asia the countries to be surveyed are India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The Tanzania and Kenya reports are scheduled to be released in the coming months, with data from Bangladesh due after that.

‘Tower Sales Will Not Lead To Joblessness,’ Says Airtel Nigeria

0

airtel

Airtel Nigeria does not think that selling the telecoms towers by telcos in the country will make some people lose their jobs.

Airtel’s CEO, Segun Ogunsanya, said: “Yes, indeed there are plans by operators to sell off, not necessarily outsource, the towers. It is the trend globally, and it is meant to allow operators concentrate on their core competences and allow those who are better equipped professionally to manage the towers to do so.”

The telcos had already outsourced their network operations to experts like Ericsson and Huawei, who in turn outsourced maintenance services like fuelling, cleaning and security to local companies known in industry parlance as ISMs.

“It is evident that the eco-system of telecommunications business is growing a wide value-chain, which has Nigerians at the epicentre. So, more jobs would be created rather than lost, given that the new owners will definitely like to grow their businesses. Regarding the Call Centres, which were outsourced to BPOs (business process outsourcing), it is inaccurate to say jobs were lost. On the contrary, the number of people employed in the Call Centre business has grown exponentially, by over 300 percent.”

The CEO said that there is a lot of positivity coming from telecommunications sector which he said had attracted more than $20 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) over the last 12 and a half years.

He added that it is the only industry that has continued to creatively take advantage of a combination of economic factors including technology, competition, outsourcing, and other economies of scale, to drive costs down hence price of telecommunications services and related products like phones and other devices.

“The telecommunications industry has demonstrably employed more people directly and indirectly since 2001. The marketing communications industry, construction, security, petroleum marketing and several others have experienced a boom with the activities of the telcos. Indeed, telecommunications can be described as the goose that lays the golden egg in the Nigerian economy,” he said.

seacom

Seacom is focused on making sure their customers have the best services ever as it has added sub-sea connectivity and it pan-African IP/MPLS network. The network enhancements will enable further growth of the continent’s telecoms infrastructure.

The company has upgraded its South African backhaul networks, linking its West and East coast cable assets through activation of multiple wavelengths between Johannesburg and Cape Town, coupled with upgrades of the network platforms that support its services to major cable interconnection hubs in Yzterfontein and Mtunzini.

Seacom has acquired additional West coast subsea capacity to meet demand from both its transmission and IP/MPLS customers, creating highly-resilient service platforms in both Southern and Eastern Africa.

“These were the last missing pieces of the puzzle we needed to put in place to realize our vision of creating a ring of resilient connectivity around Africa. Our most recent investments will allow us to offer higher-quality services to our service provider and network operator customers, so that they in turn can provide higher quality and more reliable services to their customers,” says Brian Herlihy, founder and executive director of Seacom.

LG Expands KnockON Feature to All L-Series II Devices

0

lg-g2-announcementLG has today expanded the availability of KnockON to devices outside the G Series to allow users turn on or off their phones without struggling to look for the power button but simply tapping or “knocking” on their phone screens twice to do so.

The feature has been released to all L SeriesII smartphones after it was launched on the LG’s G Series smart devices, including the curved G Flex and the G Pad 8.3 tablet  and G2.

Josep Kim, the LG East Africa Managing Director said the feature will allow users directly access the home screen of the device without using the power button or picking it up.

“With several recent studies showing that average users check their smartphones more than one hundred times a day, KnockON has become one of the most widely-used and well-received UX features. Due to its exceptional convenience, we expect KnockON to become very popular among users in Kenya and beyond.”

LG says the feature was a necessary side effect from the power button being on the back of the phone for user who might want to wake the phone to see a notification, but not necessarily pick it up to do so.

“Knock is distinctively an LG UX and a great example of what happens when you marry the latest in mobile technology with consumer-centric insights,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO, LG Mobile.

“No one ever thought that a power button needed to be improved until our engineers wondered why they couldn’t turn the entire screen into a power button,” said Dr Park.

Nigerian And Ghanaian SMEs Will Be Getting A $20 Million Boost From AVCA

0

AFRICA

Nigeria and Ghana seems to be a great place to start the small business as African Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (AVCA), a non-profit organization, has committed $10 million each for the  Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) industries in the two countries.

The CEO of the Alitheia Capital, Tokunboh Ishmael and one of AVCA’s board members  said that  the company currently has approximately 1000 investments across Africa; adding that equity is a crucial thing for SME sector financing.

“Private equity and venture capital plays a crucial role in financing the SME sector, which is the engine of economic growth the world over,” Tokunboh noted.

Ahead of the 11th annual conference of AVCA, CEO of African Capital Alliance Okey Enelamah explained: “with reported investment figures increasing to $3 billion in 2013, private capital in Africa is chiefly growth investment, unlike the typical perception of private equity in more developed markets.”

“SME is key to real sector growth. In advanced economies, SMEs account for over 50 per cent of the volume of businesses transacted. If Nigeria must grow the double digits in financial inclusion, she definitely has to look at SME growth and provide all it takes for SME businesses to flourish in the country,” added Tunde Lemo, former Deputy Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank.

In 2012, Nigeria, Africa second largest economy, reported that it has about 8 million SMEs employing about 42.4 million people and contributing about 46.5 per cent of nominal GDP.

Suregift Co-founders Say Why They Left Jumia Nigeria

0

Much has been said of Nigeria’s tech industry even though its just at its toddler stage, just as is with every country in Africa. One firm however wants to see the more young entrepreneurs joining the league and building the tech scene even more, with energy.

In a rare interview, Jumia Nigeria talks to Olaolu Samuel biyi, Adeoye ojo and Babafemi lawal, the co-founders of the new online platform ‘Suregifts.com.ng’ on their experiences inside Jumia and why they left and what inspires them to launch a gifting service.

Jumia: Can you tell us about yourselves?

Suregifts– (Middle) Olaolu Samuel Biyi, Former Senior Financial Analyst at Jumia Nigeria, currently the Finance and Vendor manager at Suregifts. (Left) Babafemi Lawal, former Operations Business Intelligence Analyst at Jumia Nigeria, prior to Jumia worked at Samsung Nigeria and currently the Operations Manager at Sure gifts. (Right) Adeoye Ojo, Former Marketing business analyst at Jumia Nigeria. Prior to Jumia worked at TNT & Samsung & currently Marketing Manager at Suregifts.

Jumia:  Can you share your experience at Jumia and what you learnt?

Suregifts: (Deoye) Experience at Jumia was great. We all started from the days of Kasuwa and we started out without knowing much about ecommerce or online retail. I personally learnt about the importance of numbers, how it impacts your business as well as tracking everything to conversion rate. Jumia gave us real time experience on how running a successful e-commerce business can be. (Biyi) Jumia exposed me to a new world where managing a high quality business is not easy yet having to make fast and important decisions on the spot that could change everything.

Jumia: What was your inspiration for launching Suregifts?

Suregifts: We got the inspiration when we were back at Jumia. We did a lot of research from our days at Jumia and all roads led to a gifting platform.  Jumia and Rocket inspired the business idea. Rocket opened doors with different online sites in Nigeria. It was easy to think around a platform that will focus on a niche like gifting.

Jumia: What is Suregifts? What is it about and what do customers gain?

Suregifts: Our platform is the home of gifts; we prey ourselves as the home of gifts and gift cards in Nigeria. Our innovation helps to solve customer problems of having to decide what to get for someone. All they have to do now is to get on Suregifts and buy a gift card which will serve the need for all their gifting purpose to friends, loved ones & family.

Jumia: What kind of Vendors will you find on Suregifts?

Suregifts: We are covering all kinds of vendors to give our customers the best experience with gifts.  Some of our vendors offer services from restaurants to spas & cinemas. So far we have high quality vendors such as Mothercare, Samsung, Denaki, Adam & eve and many more. The aim is to acquire more vendors all over the country to service customers nationwide. Our vendors are also not limited to physical locations, we have vendors online such as Ella Mathew and we are working to get more vendors like Jumia on board

Jumia: What would you say your biggest challenges have been so far?

Suregifts: For us, it comes down to communication. Ecommerce/online retail in Nigeria is still relatively new and like every other business online, we have to educate people about what we do and how it can help them. We have had a good response from customers picking up the idea. Another major challenge is expanding across the country.   We are already getting request from states up north about our services. It is interesting for us that we are reaching people and now we are trying to find a way to reach out to more merchants in those areas for customers to enjoy the pleasure of gift cards.

Jumia: With the new CBN policy pushing cashless economy, will you say your business is in line with that?

Suregifts: As a new brand we have built our platform to accept electronic payment. We do very little cash exchange. Our business model works as an invisible gift, so you can’t expect the recipient of a gift card to pay when he receives a card. It would have already been paid for and the fastest way to do that is either online or bank deposit.  We are working hard to restrict the movement of cash and promote the cashless policy.

Jumia: With your brand growing so fast, Entrepreneurs are wondering how you did it. Do you have any advice for young entrepreneurs trying to step up?

Suregifts: It is simple. Make sure you position yourself well, and meet the right people. Also don’t just dream, talk to people about it, visualize it and make a move. Finally you need to have the CAN DO attitude, which is really important. Believe in yourself and Push push push

Jumia: What would you say the future of Suregifts is? What should people be expecting?

Suregifts: We want the Suregifts brand to be embedded in everyone’s head, so when you think gifts you think of Suregifts.

Jumia: With the tech eco-system growing so fast where do you see the industry going in a couple of years?

Suregifts: Following Jumia’s success in the ecommerce space in Nigeria giving a name to the industry, it has opened doors for more people to be able to pitch their ideas and start their own ecommerce sites. We expect more people to take more courageous steps with their ideas. The growth of ecommerce has had an impact on tech space in Nigeria; people are using technology to build solutions for a lot of things now.

Jumia: Would you say Jumia impacted your business so far, asides from inspiring the idea?

Suregifts: Yes Jumia impacted how we have structured our business and also for us not to make so many mistakes in the beginning. We learnt a lot working in Jumia and this has really helped.

Jumia: Should we be expecting more innovations from Suregifts?

Suregifts: We are changing a lot about gifting and it is all about finding new ways to ensure gift redemption is effective in Nigeria. Our solution is to find a way to put Suregifts with everything you can do or buy e.g wedding gifting, party celebration, buying fuel and much more.

Thebe Goes Live to Give Batswana Opportunity to Sell & Buy Online

0

1505208_215373591989121_1485633398_n The Thebe is of great importance to Botswana, together with the Pula it is the coin of Botswana and is used daily in every transaction. But Thebe also means shield, the shield that protects Batswana and their heritage and is seen in the coat of arms.

TechMoran met with Colin van Mil, the site’s founder and here is what he told us.

What does the site do?

Thebe is an advertising platform for Botswana. We give people the opportunity to start selling and buying their goods and services on-line for free. Thebe.co.bw does exactly what it’s name portrays. It is used for transactions and tries to protect/shield our users while doing so. Like the Thebe there are many denominations so you can sell big but also as small as you wish.

When was it launched?

Thebe.co.bw is still very fresh, we went on-line on Tuesday the 4th of February.

As a founder, tell us more about yourself?

Great, I wasn’t ready for this question. Well I am Colin van Mil, the eldest son of two entrepreneurs in Botswana. I am both Motswana and Dutch and I run a software company in The Netherlands.

What else have you done that is successful?

Looking back at the moments I am most proud of would be having my own software company for 8.5 years now, and in that time I have helped a lot of companies throughout the world both small and multinationals. But how do you measure success, I guess if you love your job, enjoy what you do and can survive doing so it is already a success.

What inspired you to launch it at first?

The idea for Thebe.co.bw was born after seeing hundreds of groups on social media sites where people advertised their goods and services for sale. There was a huge demand and Botswana needed a platform where people could gather to sell and buy their goods in an on-line marketplace. So the real seed was planted not by us but by the people (our users) that needed Thebe.co.bw the most.

What moved you to launch a classifieds site with more global players soon launching in the country?

Why not, somebody has to be the first, so why not Thebe? The demand for these type of platforms is huge across the globe, people love buying & selling goods. Thebe is probably not the first and will probably not be the last, all we are certain of is that we are here to stay!

How is the classifieds market in your country?

Like I stated earlier, the market is very big, but spread out over many platforms. Our main goal is to move the on-line marketplace from the social media sites and printed form to one big platform where people can easily search and find what they need, but also start selling their goods or services in a few minutes.

Do you think you will be successful?

Our success is largely dependent on the success of our users. The users are the platform. Thebe.co.bw aims to provide the best platform for our users, so to answer your question. Yes, I think we, the platform/users will be a success as long as we listen to our platform/users.

How many listings so far?

The site has been live for a week now, but we cannot complain at all. We had 110 active adverts after the first week and hopefully double that by next week. Our user count is growing everyday and after only a week we are already seeing 126 accounts and more than a thousand unique visitors over 7 days.

Do you have any affiliations or partnerships?

At the moment we have a partnership with Customized Software in Botswana, this software company has helped us a lot in the development of Thebe.co.bw and will keep doing this in the future. Apart from that Thebe is a stand-alone platform run by enthusiasts.

How do you make money out of it?

Money is not important to Thebe, but like every company we have bills to pay. We will never ask our users to pay for the normal use of our platform so having an account, posting adverts or browsing is free, and will always be free! We do have sponsored search results and in the near future people will be able to place banner advertising on our website through an advertising partner, but at the moment our focus is having a good working platform first.

Do you have any paying clients here already?

No, Thebe.co.bw is completely free. All we really are is a platform to connect buyers and sellers with each other, we do not take any commission or even take part in the transaction. The sale is done between the advertiser and the interested party without Thebe being involved.

Is there anything new you are going to offer the existing online classifieds?

The existing ways of advertising in Botswana are either through The Botswana Advertiser, a weekly printed classifieds magazine, which is not only expensive to advertise in but not even available in all regions of Botswana.

The other option is posting your ad in social media groups, this is great if you come across an advert you need but if you are looking for something in particular can cost you days to scroll through all the messages in the different groups.

Thebe.co.bw offers you the best of both worlds and more.

Your advert is always free, it is published as soon as you hit the submit button for everybody to see You can edit it and add more images or change the description. You have access to our platform even without an account and are not bound by our borders or specific regions. But most important you can browse a category of choice or by specific regions or even the whole site 24 hours a day wherever you are, and it works on every device be it a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.

Where do you expect your business to be in 2 years?

We have no expectations whatsoever, but it would be great to see our platform grow into a mature website and being the first stop for people to buy and sell second hand goods in Botswana. Is there anything cooler than that?

Any plans to expand into the entire continent?

Let’s focus on Botswana first and make sure we have a great working platform. Expanding into the entire continent will take time and we would have to focus on every country one by one. Not every country has the same needs or facilities. For now it’s a dream, but who knows what the future will bring.

How is doing business in your city?

I do business in the largest city in the world, the internet. There are many players but there is room for us all, and anybody can do it. The internet is a great place to do business and nowadays almost everybody in the world can be reached.

One word to wannabe entreprenuers?

One word is tough, just love what you do, don’t do it to get rich overnight and be patient! If it would be easy everybody would do it, making it even harder!

What could you be doing had you not founded Thebe?

If I had’t founded Thebe, I guess I would still be enjoying what I do and thinking of something else I could be setting up. There is still so much space for good ideas!

Intel has unveiled a software based on open source technologies called the Intel Data Platform. It is designed to make it easier and faster for companies to make big analysis.

The Intel Data Platform: Analytics Toolkit (Intel Data Platform AT) will create a graph analytics and predictive modelling environment to help businesses uncover valuable insights from hidden relationships within data.

The software gives an open environment for import, management and analysis of big data that builds upon the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop to offer improved reliability and enterprise-class security and support; and features a number of features including streaming data processing, interactive and iterative analytics, and graph processing.

“As big data shifts from hype to reality, Intel is helping to break down the barriers to adoption by easing complexity and creating more value,” says Boyd Davis, vice-president and GM of Intel’s Datacenter Software Division. “Much like an operating system for big data processing, the Intel Data Platform supports a wide variety of applications while providing improved security, reliability and peace of mind to customers using open source software.”

Having integrates frameworks for stream processing in real time, companies such as retailers can use the Intel Data Platform to analyse social media and sensor data, in-store purchases, and inventory to gauge the impact of a celebrity endorsement on the demand for a new product.

Using the interactive and iterative frameworks for big data applications, industries such as telecommunications can look up  data tailored to a specific customer in order to personalize recommendations for new products or services.

The platform will be available next quarter in Enterprise Edition and Premium Edition versions each offering various levels
of support.

As for the Enterprise Edition, it will full platform capabilities as a free software product to customers who can support
their deployment and  Premium Edition, available for purchase on an annual subscription basis and will provide additional technical features.

The toolkit provides a foundation of common algorithms, that IT teams can build on and customise with domain-specific code.
The toolkit also provides an enhanced development framework for unifying graph analytics and classical machine learning to ease the programming effort.

The Intel Data Platform AT is available in beta now and expected to be commercially available by the end of the second quarter.

Kenya’s 2ishi.com Wants to Disrupt Online Property Listings in the Region

0

2ishi2ishi is a real estate portal for advertising real estate listings for real estate agents and individuals who want to sell their property or want to expose them for tenants. The platform also has Home Improvement professionals such as Landscapers, Interior designers etc.

Founded a few months ago by 20-something year-old’s Kuria Karanja and Andrew Gacharah, 2ishi was inspired when the two realized the available portals weren’t that user friendly and despite them having many listings they just didn’t feel like visiting the sites again.

“We didn’t want to stay on the portals because of the way they displayed their data. So we set out to build something that made it more fun to do home search. Emphasis was on design. We knew we could offer something different, something that people will find intriguing and useful at the same,” Kuria told TechMoran.

2ishi home pageWith 131 listings so far, 2ishi is free at the moment, until it gains traction, then the founders will start charging for monthly subscriptions to people who intend to advertise on the website. They say they have clients in Nakuru, Nairobi and Mombasa at the moment and are moving across the country to have more users on their platform which they say is unmatched.

“Our map feature is unmatched. Our mortgage calculators also act as useful tools in helping our users make informed home buying decisions. We also have a unique way in which we deliver leads to our agents not only relying on emails or calls from clients like other portals do. We also intend to improve the way sellers and buyers communicate via our portal with our upcoming Dashboard feature and an android application,” said Kuria.

In 2 years 2ishi aims to have tens of thousands of listings and property agents across the country. They also expect to be profitable and venture outside Kenya to the rest of the continent even though it’s not easy.

Initialy based in Nakuru town, the two are moving the firm’s headquarters to Nairobi soon because most of the agents in the town are yet to embrace technology compared to those in Nairobi who have already advertised online before. They urge the youth to do start-ups as there’s a lot that can be done and learned first hand and emulating Dave McClure, “18 months of working in a start-up is better than 18 months of an MBA.”

Digitalization on the go in Pakistan real estate

0

1618571_290392861108577_683258710_nPakistan is one such country which somehow lags behind in the race of technological development, but gradually, IT (Information Technology) companies are endeavouring to take IT sector of the country to a next level. In some recent years, IT has made a notable move in the real estate sector of Pakistan and with the advent of property portals like Zameen.com, real estate industry of the country is actually being digitalized with a fast pace.

This digitalization has allowed people to search properties online and mature their real estate related deals, while avoiding the hassle of conventional/manual property hunt. Real estate agents on the other hand are using online portals to bait clients and assist people in property buying, selling and renting. Moreover, these online platforms also allow the agents to market their real estate agencies.

Real estate digitalization has made it easy for the investors to take informed investment decisions while funnelling money in the market. Property portals sanction data based reports that educate investors about price trends and these reports provide them with reasonable investment guidance. Not only that, digitalization of real estate sector in Pakistan has also allowed people to conduct their real estate discussions online. Online property forums, where on one hand let real estate experts to have their say about the market, also allow newbies to learn from the efficacious discussions on these forums.

Today, it is being observed that more and more people are signing up with the real estate portals to avail respective benefits but this trend is mostly confined to the major cities of the county, i.e. Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Nevertheless, considering the response of people towards online property search, it can be expected that in the looming time this digitalization will take over smaller cities as well.

Zameen.com was the first portal to introduce the trend of online property search in Pakistan, back in 2006. Now there are other websites as well which are working on the same premise. Pakistan still has a room available for digitalization not only in the real estate sector but also other business niches of the country and this digital development is equally important for the growth of IT sector and the country itself.
