Intel Kenya has today launched Intel Explore and Learn application that offers parents and children quality digital content developed for the Kenyan education system.

This is a product of the partnership between Intel and Rancard, an African- based mobile technology company that provides cloud-based software platform for mobile content discovery, delivery and monetization.

The solution will provide access to a variety of content including text books, set books, interactive past exam papers, rich multimedia for Kenyan students from Primary to High school level.

“The aim of the Intel Explore and Learn solution is to provide a resource hub where learners can find relevant content to enrich their studies while at the same time provide publishers with access to a platform that will enable them to easily share their learning content. We would like to call upon all publishers and other content providers to partner with Intel in delivering exciting quality education content to Kenya’s children to transform how they study and enable children to create their tomorrow,” said Intel’s’ Middle East and Africa Business Development Directpr, Cigdem Ertem.

Intel has so far partnered with Kenya Institute of Circulum Developers (KICD), eKitabu, Misingi pack and Taifa leo.

This platform is designed to address challenges facing adoption of digital education as it is a one stop shop with relevant education content, that means no reference is needed; offline access to downloaded content; content availability anywhere anytime; parents can buy only what their children need through mobile money and accepted credit and debit cards.

The Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Education Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi said: “indeed, towards the realization of Vision 2030, the education system will be guided by placing emphasis on new developments and subsequent innovations in science and technology. It is initiatives such as this that promote the soci-economic, technological and industrial skills for the country’s development.”

Intel is also planning to roll out training sessions for teachers interested in digitizing their content in partnership with KICD and KPSA(Kenya Private Schools Association).

It would be easy to conclude that only the well-off schools and student will be the ones to benefit as they have the electronic devices within their reach but Ertem told Techmoran that they will be working with the government to ensure that children who do not have the devices to access this platform outside the school will be taken care of.

He also said that they will also include the SMS platform to facilitate the program, apart from that, there is a reseller program that Intel will start that involve people selling out internet devices like phones, laptops and tablets and help the disadvantaged students purchase them.

Angaza Design Wants to Light Your World With Pay-As-You-Go Solar Solutions

0
angazaFounded in Nairobi in 2012 by Lesley Silverthorn,  Victoria Arch  and Bryan Silverthorn, Angaza Design is an alternative energy startup providing Pay-As-You-Go solutions to resellers and distributors.
The founders say their Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) technology allows users to buy solar-ready products at affordable prices as if they were buying mobile phone airtime.
The low cost solar energy products include a solar lamp dubbed the SoLite3 which was build from Angaza-designed hardware and software. The startup is also working on a PAYG-enabled 3rd party lamp later in the year.
SoLite3 is a PAYG-enabled solar lamp and mobile phone charger which is being sold via distribution partners in E. Africa. The team believs the lamp will end the woes of lack of power and light especially for people in communities without access to grid electricity.
The firm is also working on making their technology available to manufactures to use their PAYG  technology into their lamps for mass production.
According to them, over 1.2 billion people have no access to electricity globally and end up spending millions using kerosene lamps and generators to light their homes and power home appliances. Kerosene and diesel and the disposable lithium batteries have effects to the environment and are also expensive.
It even worse in East Africa, where a typical family spends over 30 percent of their annual incomes on lighting their homes and charging their phones.
With over 16 million mobile money customers, Angaza’s PAYG platform can help rural and peri-urban consumers buy solar lanterns and fit them in their homes and pay using flexible terms of payment.
All a customer needs is commitment and  then Angaza will supply them with their products and follow their payment records remotely.
Just like voice calls, the more a consumer uses their solar lanterns, the more they’ll pay.
The Angaza PAYG platform collects and respond to customer payments in real time, securely and reliably, and across countries and currencies. Angaza’a PAYG technology allows consumers to purchase PAYG-ready products over time, in affordable increments, just like they purchase cellular airtime.

A report from The FinMark Trust’s, FinScope South Africa 2013 shows that South Africa’s banked population has grown substantially from 23.9 million in 2012 to 27.4 million in 2013.

This survey concluded that the level of access to financial service in the South African population (at the age of 16 and older), has covered 75 percent.

Dr Prega Ramsamy, CEO of FinMark Trust, said that the major reasons behind the increase in the banked population is; the roll out of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) MasterCard Debit cards, which contributed 1.9 million people to the banked population in 2013, and organic banking growth.

“The success of the SASSA Debit MasterCard card roll out is having a significant impact on the South African payments system, on socio-economic development and most importantly on the cardholders who can now manage their finances in a much more dignified, convenient and safe way,” says Philip Panaino, Division President, MasterCard, South Africa.

Since March 2012 ,10 million SASSA Debit MasterCard cards have been issued to grant recipients, following the  introduction of a new grant disbursement system introduced by SASSA to minimise fraudulent grant applications and collections and reduce grant administration costs by distributing all grant payments electronically.

In its National Development Plan, the South African Government challenged the financial sector to achieve financial inclusion of 70 percent in the country by 2013, with a target of 90 percent set for 2030.

The survey also revealed that 65% of banked adults surveyed said that they prefer using bank cards instead of cash to make their purchases.

“It is clear that electronic payments are being embraced by millions of South Africans who are now realizing the benefits of a cashless society,” says Panaino. “It is our goal to continue to grow financial inclusion both in South Africa and abroad by introducing innovative payment solutions that will help make transacting quicker, safer and more convenient for everyone, everywhere and whenever needed.”

Zimbabwe’s Telecel Presents ‘911 Road Assist’ To Help During Road Emergencies

 breakdown

Zimbabwe’s Telecel has brought together a new emergency response facility called 911 Road Assist.

This service will help the people of Zimbabwe to get help in case they get into an accident or car breakdown or any other road emergencies.

In order to enjoy this services one has to register by dialing *160#, and follow the instructions for entering the four numbers they would wish to be contacted in an emergency.

After registering this is how it works; when a subscriber dials the number *160#, it will automatically send a request to the four numbers that the subscribers had selected to contact in the emergency situation.

The service only cost 50cents per month, which will be deducted from the subscriber’s airtime balance

Telecel Zimbabwe marketing director Octivius Kahiya said: “By subscribing to 911 Road Assist our customers can have the peace of mind of knowing that if they have a vehicle breakdown or are in need of any roadside assistance, all they have to do is dial *160# and their request for help will go to the four numbers they have specified when they registered for the service.”

Kahiya said that in seeking to add value to the services it offered, Telecel had considered, among other issues, how it could assist subscribers when they found themselves in difficulties.

Looking at last year’s introduction of emergency airtime for pre-paid subscribers who had run out of airtime, Telecel’s marketing director said that it would be good to work the two options when in need .

“We hope that the provision of this facility will be of assistance to our subscribers. We would encourage all subscribers who own a vehicle to subscribe to this service to ensure they have peace of mind,” Mr Kahiya said.

Why Afrikoin is the Holy Grail of Africa’s eCommerce & Payments Sector

0

afrikoinNairobi-based seed stage investment firm, Savannah Fund will on November 20 host Afrikoin, an event on Africa’s emerging ecimmerce, digital currency and payments to help innovators, entreprenuers in the ecommerce and the payments space and laymen to understand the future of cash in Africa.

Speaking to TechMoran Savannah Fund’s Mwana Alliy said AfriKoin was inspired by a need to help their second batch of startups, who were majorly in the payments and ecormmerce space, to understand the ecosystem by listening from the industry players themselves than just having another cliche launch.

Demo is not a pitching contest

“It happens that this batch is in the ecormmerce and payments space. Demo Day to me is not just about a pitching contest but a value add, so we decided to put up an event they can ask questions on credit cards, debits and we didn’t just want to have a launch like any other but wanted to equip them for the trade, hence Afrikoin. ”

Though the eCommerce and payments sector is huge in Africa,  Afrikoin aims to help the average person to understand payments and  know what they need to do with their eCommerce businesses. It also addresses emerging trends such a bitcoins among others.

“We also wanted to help odrinary mwananchi to learn about the future of digital payments, know the emerging trends in the payments space like Bitcoins and also help them understand that to be in the ecormmerce space they have to understand payments,” said Alliy.

iHub-Nairobi He added that the average techy can also know the advantages of the various payments methods, know how to integrate them and learn about regulations from the legal team that will speak at the event. The  launching startups will have the opportunity to ask questions on mobile payments, credit cards payments and other real challenges surrounding digital currency and payments in Africa.

Fix payments in Africa

Afrikoin doesn’t try to fix payments in Africa but as investors Savannah Fund only aims at accelerating emerging innovations in the tech sector.

“We don’t want to wait for things to happen but accelerate and help people learn regulations, frameworks among others. Afrikoin is not trying to fix payments in Africa, Demo Day will just be a space to learn about them, a value add to everyone. We willl do what is needed not just be there, we want to meet a need, and needs change everytime. One day is not enough to fix Africa’s payments sector. We want entreprenuers to come in the event and get help.”

“The world thinks Africa is not buying online but has much needs like food and water and people think delivery does not work in Africa. They think Konga is not real, they Jumia is not in Africa. They are basically ignoring Africa’s middle class. As a VC it’s my job not just to look at things happening but to accelerate them.”

Africa’s middle class

eCommerce in Africa is still in its early stages due to payment challenges but Africa has plenty of average cunsumers buying online, from tickets to shoes. By addressing issues like secutiry and trust,  Afrikoin stands as the continents holy grail for eCommerce.

There is a massive eCommerce opportunity in Africa with a population of over 1 billion. Though grwoth might take time adddresing barries like payments, delivery and transport helps.

ecommerceafTo those doubting Africa, McKinsey Global Institute reported that the continent’s imminent boom in consumer spending was expected to rise from $860 billion in 2008 to $1.4 trillion in 2020, while the International Civil Aviation Organization reported that Africans flew 8.3% more miles in 2012. Over ten new five-star hotels were constructed in Lagos last year and prices for apartments in some upmarket districts of Lagos match those of  major Western capitals.

The report also adds that return on foreign investment in Africa is higher than in any other developing region and that for the last ten years, six of the world’s 10 fastest-growing economies were African even beating Asian tigers. At 13%, Ghana was the continent’s fastest-growing economy in the world in 2011.

And where are the consumers, you might ask.

According to the African Development Bank, Africa now has the fastest-growing middle class globally with over 34 percent , around 313 million people spending over $2.20 a day, a 100% rise in less than 2 decades. The bank says by 2060, Africans living below the poverty line will be as little as 33 percent.

Groupe Speciale  Mobile Association (GSMA ) projects Africa to have nearly 800 million mobile phones by end 2013. In 2011 it carried out a survey that found that 71% of adults in Nigeria; 62% in Botswana and more than half the populations of Ghana and Kenya own mobile phones, making Africa the world’s fastest-growing mobile phone market and the second biggest comnsumer of mobile phones behind Asia.

From mobile phones to eCormmerce

Away from mobile phones. eCommerce is steadily picking up in Africa. Nigeria’s Konga and Jumia have led the way. The online malls sell to anyone in Nigeria and deliver across the country. The firm’s have huge warehouses and offline pickup points. Jumia also runs a Kenyan branch. Konga is funded by MIH Naspers while Jumia backed by Berlin’s Rocket Internet.

Ahonya has set up shop in Ghana and is slowly picking up. Ahonya is backed by Savannah Fund. South Africa has had its fair shares of eCormmerce sites some of them also backed by Rocket Internet or Naspers and individual firms. Rocket Internet recently got a backing from Millicon and JP Morgan and Summit Partners. Believers  and early acellerators in Africa’s eCommerce.

paypal_logoWhat a mobile phone is in Africa

eCormmerce is really not a strange term in Africa since the launch of undersea cables early 2010 and the increasing affordability of internet, being mobile-internet in most countries on the continent led by Nigeria over 150 milliom mobile subscribers and Kenya’s encouraging 30 plus million mobile phone users using their mobil einternet not only for ecommerce but for education, farming and healthcare and even buying shares and saving.

Forbes has a list of African billionares and millionaries and it not just Aliko Dangote or Uhuru Kenyatta, there are retailers who have build their business from scratch and still making more money by the hour. Retailes in Kenya like Nakumatt,Tuskys, Naivas have the most visitors in a day than banks and bars combined, a sign of the country’s growing consumers. Porsche is launching in Africa, Wal-mart already did, so did KFC. Safaricom makes as much money as if it’s not in Africa, and so are other firms like Coca Cola, Samsung, Google and thousands of NGO’s running campaigns here.

kfcThe eCommerce opportunity is big as long as Africa will still consume, that’s why payments, delivery and eCommerce is general have to be fixed.

eCommerce opportunity is big

Afrikoin will bring together practitioners in the industry to encourage innovation in the payments and eCormmerce sector. Alliy says the whole-day event at ihub will be livestreamed for the global audience and already firms like Equity Bank and PayPal, Visa, Kipochi among others have confiremed their attendence.

Come, let;s fix payments for the continents disparate markets and accelerate eCormmerce together.

 Abstract planet 2

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Motorola Solutions presented the International Network of Social Innovators for Human Development (INSIHD).

This network will link innovators globally with development programs involving the use of mobile technologies to bring innovative solutions to traditional challenges and to improve development outcomes.

Many apps are being developed but are yet to be fully adopted or connected to government and stakeholders.

The UNDP-Motorola Solutions event thus provided an opportunity for stakeholders to come together to address this and other issues.

Around 35 participants explored the rapid diffusion of mobile technologies that expanded communication channels in Rwanda, and opened new opportunities for social entrepreneurs to be part of development efforts.

They also showcased initiatives and state of the art innovations that could be used in various development efforts, highlighted lessons learned and good practices that could inform future initiatives, and underlined the importance of innovative partnerships.

Participants explored the possibilities of mobile technologies in executing goals such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and post 2015 development agenda.

The Minister of Youth and ICT,  Jean Philbert Nsengimana said: “Information and communication technologies must be an integral part of national development priorities and not seen in isolation. ICTs enable faster, more efficient and cost effective poverty reduction efforts. Rwanda is proud to share its experience of SMART Rwanda with other countries in Africa and the world.”

Travis Heneveld, Motorola Solutions’ Account Director said: “Motorola Solutions is proud to be part of a global initiative that links innovation in mobile technologies with concrete local development priorities.“

The event was the third in a series being planned by UNDP and Motorola Solutions, and linked the Rwandese social innovators with counterparts from similar events organized earlier this year in Kenya and Tunisia.

South Africa’s SPOTTM Set to be Africa’s First Real Time Crime & Incident Reporting Mobile App

0

spottBeverley Paly and Lawrence Suss from Cape Town are set to launch SPOTTM, a ground breaking mobile app, that allows users to request help from thousands in the community.

The real-time app can also be used to alert police and family or property owners on crime as it happens and as well notify councils about service delivery issues.

Rolling out in beta early next year, the app is expected to empower communities in the fight against crime and addressing service delivery issues as it allows any member of the public (Spotters) to respond – in real time – to victim reports and police identikits via their phones, anonymously.

The reprots can lead to an arrest of the perpetrator, or the recovery of stolen goods. In addition to crime related reports, app users can also log service delivery requests to local councils. The app wil aid the present SMS and social-media based crime tip-off services with its real-time capabilities.

The interactive and user friendly app has the following features.

The SPOTTM app features:

Green Button – allows victims of crime to quickly and easily report the incident with the additional option of uploading audio, video, and photo evidence. The report, which also contains geo-location and time data, is received and vetted by SPOTTM’s helpdesk, then forwarded to ‘Spotters’ and the local law enforcement agencies.

Red Button – is a proactive feature that allows ‘SPOTTM’ users to alert family/friends and police, should they find themselves in dangerous situations. Clicking the “Sound-the-Alarm” icon sends a location based SOS alert to 3 preselected contacts and local law enforcement.  In less threatening situations, by activating the “Walk-me-Home” icon, the user’s contacts are able -via GPS- to virtually walk them home.

Amber Button – This is where app users – by uploading images or videos – can seamlessly alert local councils about service requests e.g. burst water pipes, faulty street lights, potholes etc.

“SPOTTM is a platform that allows us to become active change agents in our communities and not just bystanders when it comes to addressing social issues.” said Beverley Paly, Co-founder and CEO.

‘SPOTTM’ will be a free app, with its initial release on the android platform . After the BETA phase -taking place in the Cape Town area- development of IOS and a national rollout will follow.

Liquid Telecom Builds Somalia’s First Cross-Border Fibre Link Connection

fibre optic cable

Somali land, known for mostly negative stories of war now has a new song to sing, as Liquid Telcom has decided to give them a taste of cross-border fibre optic link.

Liquid telcom has built the first fibre optic link into Somalia connecting the country to its neighbors, the rest of the world and the undersea cables by fibre for the first time.

The fibre link connects the Kenya Somalia border then directly into the fibre network of Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc. (HORTEL) for local termination.

Hortel’s fibre network will provide Liquid Telecom’s customers – fixed and mobile operators, wholesale carriers and enterprises – with reliable, robust and fast connectivity in southern and central Somalia.

HORTEL’s customers now have access to Liquid Telecom’s pan-African fibre network, temporarily.  The network extends to more than 17,000k across Botswana, DRC, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe and provides connectivity onto the five main subsea cable systems landing in Africa; WACS, EASSY, SEACOM, SAT3 and TEAMs.

“We will be providing the people of Somalia with access to the global internet at higher speeds and with more capacity available than ever before. Our goal is to connect every person and business in Africa to the internet and to each other. We are an agile and entrepreneurial company which is investing heavily in building our pan-African fibre network,” said Nic Rudnick,Liquid Telecom Group CEO .

Hormuud Telecom Chairman & CEO, Mr. Ahmed Yuusuf said: “The connection of the HORTEL network to Liquid Telecom’s international fibre network is a landmark for Somalia and will provide our customers with the fastest and most cost effective communications speeds available. This is a significant accomplishment for both companies.

He added that Hormuud Telecom plans to enrich lives through improved voice and data coverage, with the support of Liquid Telecom which provides the terrestrial fibre connection into Somalia.

“We always remember our social responsibilities in this country of ours, Somalia, which has suffered from civil war for years, as we help provide generators and fuel to hospitals, food and shelter to displaced people and educational supplies to schools,” he said.

African Development Bank Launches Feedback Portal on its Government Strategy

0

feedback The African Development Bank (AfDB) has launched a Web portal for feedback on its new Governance Strategy for 2014-2018 to help it receive feedback on its future governance interventions.

The feedback portal, open to all its stakeholders on its governance interventions will help the bank inform all stakeholders on its proposed governance strategic directions for 2014-2018 and to receive feedback on their expectations on its future governance interventions.

“We welcome feedback on whether our “Governance Strategic Direction and Action Plan for 2014-2018” (GAP II) identifies the key governance challenges confronting Africa and whether the three proposed strategic pillars and associated operational activities will be adequate to address them”, said Patricia Laverley, GAP II task manager.

The stakeholders can also suggest ways in which GAP II can better complement and reinforce the governance work of other development partners in Africa and how they can work together to leverage additional resources for the continent’s development.

“The vision of AfDB is that Africa is governed by transparent, accountable and responsive governments with strong institutions that are capable of driving inclusive and sustainable growth,” said Lobe Ndoumbe, Governance and Financial management Director, at the launch of the web consultation.

AfDB’s new governance strategy is based on the AfDB Group’s Strategy for 2013-2022 in which governance and accountability are among the core operational priorities, to be mainstreamed across the Bank.

AfDB’s “Governance Strategic Direction and Action Plan 2014-2018” (GAP II) is built on three objectives. It seeks to strengthen governments’ capacity for transparent and accountable use of public resources and citizens’ ability to hold governments to account. It also seeks to improve outcomes in the sectors and citizen’s ability to monitor them. It also aims at promoting a business enabling environment which supports Africa’s socio-economic transformation, job creation and financial inclusion. The fight against corruption in both the public and private sectors will prevail in all its operations.

Going forward, AfDB’s governance work will build on the achievements of its first “Governance Strategic Direction and Action Plan (GAP I)” for 2008-2012. GAP II will deepen AfDB’s support to public financial management and business environment. It will also increase its support to the governance of key sectors such as natural resource management and infrastructure. Moreover, during 2014-2018, GAP II will deepen AfDB’s diagnostic works to improve programming and policy dialogue for greater impact and delivery of results.

The “Governance Strategic Direction and Action Plan 2008-2012” (GAP I) provided the overall direction for the AfDB’s governance work in African countries. The core areas of focus were on public financial management and business environment, implemented at country, sector and regional levels.

In countries where AfDB Group provided support, most governance indicators showed improvements. According to the “Development Effectiveness Review on Governance”, published in 2012, across the 14 countries where the African Development Bank has invested in revenue systems, tax revenue has risen dramatically, from 10.5% to 14.7% of GDP, while tax rates for business have declined, from 94% of commercial profits to 54%.

The results flagged in the “Development Effectiveness Review on Governance” also suggest major improvements in the business environment as a result of the Bank’s assistance. Across the 18 countries where the Bank is providing this support, the time required to start a business reduced from 43 days in 2005 to only 23 days in 2011.

The time devoted by business to the payment of taxes reduced by 10% to 254 hours per year, while the average time required to enforce a contract fell by 50 days. These business friendly measures are part of the reason why net foreign direct investment has increased substantially from 4% to 6% of GDP across these countries; although a buoyant natural resource sector has also contributed.
