Partech Africa portfolio companies saw $4B+ in financial transactions in 2019

0

Partech Africa has achieved a lot in just one year. In January 2019, the fund announced it had closed €125M ($143M) investment round and opened its Nairobi offices after closing 3 deals in 2018.

Partech Africa, has raised funding from African Development Bank, L’Oréal and IFC.

In 2019, Partech Africa completed 8 transactions, sealed 6 new deals and made 2 follow-on investments. The fund welcomed six (6) new outstanding teams into the growing Partech Africa.

According to Cyril Collon, General Partner at Partech Africa, “Even with 6 new investments this year and two re-investments, we had to be extremely selective: we’ve engaged over 600 companies raising money this year, among them many great startups led by strong entrepreneurs. It proves that the skyrocketing numbers of tech fundraising in Africa are supported by strong fundamentals.”

It’s nine (9) portfolio companies work from six (6) countries in Africa and together have an extremely large impact in their spaces: more than one hundred thousand (100k+) merchants being served, four billions dollars ($4B+) of financial transactions per year, 20M+ end-users, etc.

To break it down, in April 2019, Kudi scored $5M round led by Partech. Then Yoco, a top South African fintech that builds tools and services to help entrepreneurs start, run and grow their businesses launched the Yoco Go, the most affordable card machine the market has ever seen.

Yoco is now servicing more than 64 000 merchants across South Africa and well on track to double their merchant base this year.

In Nigeria, TradeDepot, a mobile B2B trade platform that connects retailers in emerging markets directly to FMCG brands for ordering and delivery, has reached c. 30k active retailers in Nigeria alone with a GMV and revenue growth over 4x on a yearly basis.

“These companies have validated our investment strategy: outstanding team, with validated model, addressing fundamental economic opportunities that will build the next African champions. We will continue to focus on financial inclusion, online and mobile consumer services, as well as mobility, supply chain services and digitization of the informal economy,” says Tidjane Dème, General Partner at Partech Africa.

Partech Africa is an arm of Partech, a global investment firm with offices in San Francisco, Paris, Berlin and Dakar. With over $1.2B investment capacity, the fund makes investments of between $200K to $50M into enterprise and consumer tech platforms, software, digital brands and services, to hardware and deep tech across all major industries.

Partech has completed more than 20 initial public offerings and more than 50 strategic exits above $100M.

Turaco, a Kenya-based micro-insurtech startup, raises $1.2 million seed funding to scale across Africa

0

Turaco, a Nairobi-based micro-insurtech startup has raised $1.2 million in seed funding to further scale its operations across Africa.

Turaco’s round of funding was led by GAN Ventures, Mercy Corps Ventures and Musha Ventures alongside several angel investors.

The raise follows USD $40,000 received in grant funding late last year from Villgro Kenya and between $50,000 to $60,000 venture building support facilitated by inclusive fintech accelerator, Catalyst Fund

In a statement, Turaco Co-founder and CEO, Ted Pantone, said: ‘For this round, we were blessed to be able to choose from a group of investors with different specialties. These range from social impact and value alignment to industry understanding and connections in Silicon Valley. In our next round of funding, we are looking for additional value-aligned investors who have the capacity to support us in our vision to insure a billion people.’

Launched in 2018, the firm frees its customers from the fear of unexpected financial shocks that come with health calamities via its quick, simple and affordable insurance cover.

Turaco offers life and health insurance products distributed through partnerships and issued on a subscription model. With over 30,000 users in Kenya and Uganda, Turaco will use the funds to cement it’s presence in new markets and further develop ongoing pilots and partnerships with businesses and fintech companies.

Working in financial services in sub-Saharan Africa, Turaco co-founders saw, from time to time, how expensive it was to see a doctor and how individuals could keep getting sick and sicker due to lack of health insurance as hospitals require upfront payments to attend to patients.

According to the World Bank, out-of-pocket healtcare payments in sub-Saharan Africa between 2000 to2014 rose to over 60 percent from 40 percent. Turaco is not the only one working in this $35 billion healthcare insurance market. There is MicroEnsure, AccessAfya, MTIBA among others. Safaricom had LindaJamii but shelved it after a miserable run.

Once they’ve saturated Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Turaco is looking at launching in West Africa, South America and more.

How HR Can Help You Become A Better Leader Today

0

Great leaders are hard to come by. It’s been said that almost half of all companies polled in a Global Leadership Survey chose leadership as the hardest of all skills to find in employees. More concerning is that only 36 percent of the respondents cited leadership as a strength in their organizations. It doesn’t matter if you are part of a corporation or one of many startups that are part of the Google launchpad, leadership is key to the success of you and your business.

Expectation vs. Reality

What was discovered from this survey was that many organizations place leadership skills learning responsibility on the employees or current managers/leaders to train their teams. Yet the employers set a high expectation on employees taking development courses, attending leadership skills training events, or even finding mentors to advance their skills and careers.

In short, employees wanting to grow in their careers feel pressured to learn skills that would not typically be compensated by their organization. The big difference in the delivery of skills training and development is in the impact of the Human Resources team onsite to assist with your career growth. Many companies provide learning management software for their employees, this allows existing employees to learn and grow within the company through proprietary software training. E-learning has bloomed into an educational resource for many businesses, and utilizing these training modules to improve the knowledge set of your team is a win-win for everyone.

Enter Human Resources

Finding your path to becoming a better leader with the support of Human Resources fills in the missing piece of the puzzle. HR’s involvement in leadership development moves the organization forward, avoiding stagnant management who are unable to adapt to ever-changing business cycles.

Defining leadership: What does great leadership look like? What are the most important traits to look for? Helping to make you a great leader involves helping you to know what to look for within your team(s). For some, it may be the main focus being on communication and transparency; for others, it may be a leader who is there to pick up the slack when the team is in need.

For this purpose, HR gets everyone on the same page to help define and understand what leadership means within that company or a particular line of business. HR can identify and guide a company toward defining a specific brand of leadership to suit the business culture.

Identifying potential: Similar to defining leadership, HR will help to determine which of your team possesses the right qualities for the role. From its unique vantage point, HR reviews and compares feedback from managers, peers, and clients or customers alike. It can see the skills and strengths (or lack thereof) to qualify those with the potential to take on greater responsibility. This is also the same process used to assist in your leadership goals.

Skills development: Skills alone won’t be enough as they need to be trained on and developed. Many employers fall short here. This is why HR is the right department to lead this program. HR can “see it all”; gaps in skills, facilitating custom leadership programs to meet the organizations’ leadership definition, and have a ready list of employees capable of taking on greater leadership responsibilities.

General support: It is more than just training provided by HR to help in your career growth. HR builds support for leaders like yourself through the recruitment and promotion processes, in addition to performance reviews completed to reinforce positive leadership.

HR helps in leadership considerations where those who deserve a promotion but who are not ready for leadership yet can still be recognized without being placed into a role that they are not yet prepared for. This support process benefits all lines of business company-wide.

Final thoughts

When it comes to business success, HR is there to assist in identifying the leadership roles existing within yourself and your teams that will help move the career ahead and which skills require support, be it training or other types of development. HR is there to collaborate with and work alongside you and your teams to bring effective leadership to a higher level within the company.

NordVPN

It offers an extra layer of security defense; the double encryption feature is a unique feature that the company incorporates in its VPN. Double VPN Encryption enables data to be routed to two VPN servers, hence an additional security layer. Compared to ExpressVPN, it supports a smaller number of servers such as 5,600, with server locations above 60. It does provide an IP addresses and can support a maximum of 6 devices. Also, it supports bitcoin transactions for unspecified payments while offering good performance. Some shortcomings of NordVPN include the limited numbers of Double VPN servers in the market, though this is compensated with the use of Onion network over VPN. It uses 256- bit AES encryption to secure data. For the mobile OS, IPSec security protocol is used to protect iOS and macOS, and an Open VPN for windows-based OS and Android OS. Customers are guaranteed their privacy through the firms ‘no-logs’ policy. VyprVPN

If your priority is the speed of the VPN connection, then VyprVPN is the best solution for you. It comes with limited capacity as compared to ExpressVPN and NordVPN. It supports slightly over 700 servers spread over 70 server locations with IP addresses of 200,000 plus. VyprVPN usually supports up to 5 devices. Some of the best features include; free trials, very fast speeds, no logs or sharing policy. It does not offer a money-back guarantee.

Other than very fast connection speed, the company provides an impressive security feature. Through the use of standard protocols and a chameleon protocol, it will harder to notice if one is using a VPN.

In terms of cost, it has good rates for a 2-year monthly subscription plan at a monthly cost of USD 2.50, and if you opt for a monthly subscription, you will pay USD 12.95.VyprVPN is pocket-friendly and thus quite popular.

Bottom line

VPN was primarily created for the sole purpose of connecting to your business network or home network securely. With time, its usage has gone beyond remote access to the business network such as having the capability to access Geo-blocked website contents, hiding your browser activity and bypassing internet censorship. Choose the best VPN that is secure, of great performance and friendly to your pocket, and ensure to test your VPN before committing to subscribe. Above all take advantage of VPN firms that offers a money back.

WhatsApp to End Support For Millions of Smartphones by 2020

0

WhatsApp has warned its users on a possible shutdown of the service on a number of smartphones worldwide.

WhatsApp support says the move is aimed at ensuring more security to the application users as the phones listed cannot support some of the WhatsApps key security features.

Older versions of Android phones dating from OS 2.3.3 and below, Windows phones supported by windows 8.0 and below, iPhones with iOS 8 and the older ones will no longer be able to access WhatsApp.

The support will end as from December 31, 2019, for Windows phones, and 1, February 2020, for android and iPhones.

However, users can retrieve their chats early enough by updating to the newer versions of the OS.  While this is possible a number of older phones, may not be able to support a new Os.

Majorly, the phones that affected are the iPhone 5s and 5c released back in 2013 and any other iPhone device running iOS 7.  Android 2.3.7 or Gingerbread, Older versions of Huawei and Samsung, Motorolla have not been left out too.

According to the independent UK, this is not the first time the application has ended support for older phones.

Previously, a number of phones were denied access from using WhatsApp. In the year 2017, Nokia Symbian S60, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10. In 2018, Nokia S40 devices could no longer support WhatsApp.

WhatsApp also noted that they do not explicitly restrict the use of jailbroken or unlocked devices.  The new WhatsApp modifications might affect the functionality of the users devises. Therefore cannot provide support for the modified versions of the Os.

WhatsApp urges it’s users to upgrade to iOS 9 or later for iPhones, OS 4 for Android devices, Windows 8.1 and above for Microsoft.  As from February 2020, they will no longer create or reverify existing accounts.

Alternatively, users will export their chats with or without media so they can access them in future.

To Justify their move, WhatsApp added, ” We want to focus our efforts on mobile devices that majority people use. While the devices have been of great support to us, they don’t offer kind of capabilities we need to expand our application features in the future.”

Notably, WhatsApp takes it as a tough decision but in the right way for better service delivery,

At the moment, WhatsApp is working on a dark mode feature for its users which will reduce battery usage.

No release date has been announced yet but the feature once updated on phone, users will be able to choose on either light or dark mode WhatsApp. Users will also be able to tick on battery saver.

Google Calendar Now Lets You Move Events Across Calendars

0

Google calendar for Android has introduced a new feature on the application.

This is good news for tons of people who depend on the service to run their daily activities.

Now users can copy and duplicate events on multiple calendars through a side update from the edit interface.

From the Android Police blog, the Google calendar app has always lagged behind its counterparts on the web. It has never been possible to outrightly move events from one calendar to another without messing up the whole thing especially on mobile.

Following the new update, you can copy and duplicate an event, enter the edit interface and you will receive an option to reassign it.

For ages, this has not been possible to do with Google calendar.

“This is much more convenient for those times when plans change or you mistakenly created an event on the wrong calendar. We are glad to see Google’s efforts to bring the mobile feature of google calendar to match with the desktop” Concluded Android Police.

Currently, the calendar update is still a server update. It is not simple to quickly update. Clearing cached data and force closing are some of the options you can use to get the update.

Also, updating to  2019 release of the  Google calendar application is an easier way to access the feature.

The new application allows you to create, edit or even interact directly with the calendar grid. The grid helps you chose a suitable calendar and you can also create a 2021 yearly planner.

Besides that, you can now enable dark theme on devices with Android N+ a most anticipated update among many users.

Especially the dark theme, while enabled, it enhances battery saving. while other users love it since it reduces so much that might otherwise affect the eyes.

However, this feature has been available for desk previously.

By enabling it on mobile devices, it is quite an advantage. Users can work from anywhere without necessarily carrying their laptops around.

Tips To Optimize The Fundraising Strategy For Your Startup

0

Fundraising can take two very different paths for founders and their businesses. It can be a struggle that lasts many months, with hundreds of investor rejections. Or, it can be a much swifter and more efficient process that produces wow results.

Check out these tips for optimizing your fundraising strategy and getting the capital you need on time.

Stay Focused: KPIs

Make it easy for yourself and your team during the fundraising process. If you are showing off a variety of metrics and potential metrics, investors are going to want to see how you are doing on those.

You may have to circle back to them, and they are going to want to see that you actually do what you say. That is going to be much harder to achieve if you are working on many fronts at the same time. Simplify and increase your chances of getting funded.

Keep Your Story Focused

In a recent episode of the Dealmakers Show, founder of Sunbit, Arad, who has raised $50M for his fintech startup warns to keep your story simple too.

There may be many things your startup can do, but that doesn’t mean you have to shout about it all at once. There may be many verticals your startup can work in. There may be a variety of personas your product or service can work for. There can be a variety of potential markets for you.

It’s going to be hard enough to do great at one of these. Experienced investors can connect the dots for themselves. Show them you are focused and can win in one area. They’ll help you scale after that.

Shortlist Investors Before You Pitch

Your time is your most precious asset. Your mental state is important too. Chances are you will still have to face rejection from investors, even in the best-case scenario. Some entrepreneurs can handle 200 and 300 rejections and won’t give up until they make it.

Not everyone has that grit. Obviously, this is one metric where less is going to feel a lot better. You also don’t simply want to needlessly waste months or years trying to raise capital and convert investors.

Fundraising success isn’t about how many investors you talk to. It’s about talking to the right investors.

Boil down your list and spend your time on the best fitting money sources that will provide the highest conversion rates.

Look for:

  • Investors who are actively trying to deploy money right now
  • Those who are focused on funding startups at your stage
  • Firms that specialize in your industry and type of product or service
  • Partners who believe in your mission

Show Traction & Results

You may need to raise some money to develop your product. Though, if you can show you’ve already gotten that far, and can show traction, you’ll stand much better chances of raising money.

If you’ve been able to start by bootstrapping, you’ll also have to give up less equity, while gaining more money when you do raise.

Again, it’s very important not to over exaggerate. A little sales and hype can be a good thing. Though, if you start making things up it is going to catch up with you.

Have A Cohesive Story

It’s hard enough to convey your story and close investors. It’s going to make it far harder if there are inconsistencies across your online profiles, websites, and your pitch and pitch deck. This is only going to add to the questions and doubt if they still take you seriously.

Take the time to clean up your online assets. Eliminate any contradicting timelines, facts, and stats.

Be sure that your pitch deck has a nice smooth flow, answers all the most pressing questions, and is clear about the problem, solution, and the mission.

Educate Yourself About Fundraising

You’re probably in a hurry, but don’t get too far ahead of yourself. The last thing you want is to have to take a step back after investors start showing interest in order to learn about startup valuations and term sheets.

At best it is going to make you look like an unprepared amateur. If could cost you the check, and leave you getting far worse terms than you could have negotiated.

Check out this fundraising training to equip yourself with what you need to know.

Bring In Some Help

One of the biggest risks in launching a fundraising campaign is the time it is going to require. In the early stages, it can easily take up 50% of your time. All of a sudden, all of the traction you were promising and the progress you expected to make is going to be much harder to achieve.

Some will put everything else on the back burner and just go all-in on trying to fundraise. Eventually, they may just run out of money.

There are two main ways to do better here. One is to hire people to help out. They may be generalists who can do other tasks in your business as you get off the ground. Or, they can be outsourced for specific tasks. Like creating pitch decks, creating crowdfunding pages, running PR, and filtering potential investors. They can do many of the tasks that would otherwise drain your time and that you really shouldn’t be distracted by.

Or you can hack the entire fundraising process, shorten the timeline, and improve your chances of success by leveraging advisors with investor connections and fundraising consultants

Make Sure You Are Raising Enough Money

Once you start raising capital for the equity you’ll never stop. If you think you’ll be raising a new round again in 12 months, you’ll actually need to be at it full force in six in order to close the round in time.

This also gives you a very short time frame for actually producing results and hitting the milestones you promised at the last round.

If you don’t hit them, your existing investors may be very reluctant to participate again. That’s not going to look great.

You also risk running out of money between raising to find product-market fit and a round that will help you scale. Consider raising a little more to give you more runway.

Be sure you can hit your milestones with the money you raise.

Instagram Announces New Safety Updates for A safer Online Community

0

Instagram has announced new safety updates geared towards creating a safer community for the users.

Instagram’s terms of use require a user to be at least 13 years of age which is the average age of consent for most social media pages.

According to Instagram press, the information will help them prevent underage people from joining Instagram, keep young people safe and enable more safe appropriate experiences at all.

The information acquired thereafter will be kept private from the public and only the user is able to access it while viewing their private account information.

Facebook, Twitter has a 13-year age-restriction and any other person who is younger than that is fully restricted from joining.

For instance on Twitter, once you create an account and it happens your age is below 13, the account is automatically blocked from your access.

If Instagram introduces such a feature for their users will be safe online especially from malicious misconducts like cyberbullying which is on the rise and if not restricted the children might be subject to online torture.

Globally, in 2018, there were almost 4 billion internet users who are nearly half of the world’s population of 7.7 billion people.

The number indicates a 50 per cent rise from 2 billion in 2015. by 2020 according to cybersecurity ventures, the number is expected to rise to 6 billion, 75 per cent of the world’s population.

Ordinarily, crimes in the parts of the world arse as the population increased.

Instagram boasts of around 1 billion users globally and out of the  number 38 per cent are believed to be children under the age of 13 according to Mobopinions

According to another report by Ofcom children and parents media use and attitudes report confirms that 28 per cent of 10-year-olds, 46 per cent of 11-year-olds and 51 per cent of 12-year-olds have access to social media and have a social media profile.

Instagram’s announcement to factor age restriction however long overdue, it will be a great step towards keeping young people safe.

Instagram help centre also allows users to report suspected minor social media users.  Instagram also,  projects to create a super safe experience through education around account controls and recommended settings around young people.

Secondly, users will be able to control who they can send messages to and also have the ability to control who sends them messages.

Originally, on Instagram, there is no restriction on message sending. One would send you a message despite them not being your followers or even go overboard by adding to group messages without your permission.

With these changes in place. we predict Instagram to be a more safe place for users.

GetMyBoat, an Uber for Boats Expands To Kenya Targeting The Growing Marine Based Tourism

GetMyBoat, a San Francisco based marine application, allows users to rent boats and access services like boat riding, Kayaking and other boat services.

GetMyBoat aims to tap into the growing marine-based tourism especially in the current peak season and the growing penetration of smartphones which makes it easier for people to access the services.

The application has been in operation since 2013, it is now available in 184 countries among them, Israel, Italy and Greece.

Already, it has up to 93 boats listed in Kenya with operations in towns along the coast including Malindi and Lamu.

Like the normal cab-hailing apps, owners are allowed to list their boats, use local knowledge to provide tours and earn money with the watercraft.

The cost of service starts from a minimum amount of KSh2,000 per hour and charges a commission starting from seven per cent for domestic bookings and 10 per cent for international charters.

Pricing of boat rentals depends on various factors, for instance, the period of usage, model and capacity of the boat.

Such services such as boat riding, luxury narrow boats for sale or boat rentals, sleep aboard, paddle sports and other watersports are however not new at the coast but with the incorporation of the smartphone feature where customers can select their preference at their convenience is an advantage to them.

For instance, international guests who visit the Kenyan coast on tour purposes have an easy time to move around the city with ease.

Cars45 starts operations in Ghana, Kenya, bolsters its C2C marketplace

0

Cars45, the automotive site of the $700m worth Frontier Car Group, which recently raised $400m from OLX Group, has officially launched in Ghana and Kenya two months after it began ground operations in the markets as it moves to be the go-to platform for all car transactions in the $45 billion African used car market.

Cars45 CEO and co-founder Etop Ikpe, said, “The process of buying and selling cars today can be complicated, time-consuming and needlessly expensive. We want to put an end to that by providing an easy and convenient way for consumers across Africa to make what is often the most significant financial transaction of their lives.”

Cars45 will allow consumers in Ghana and Kenya to sell their cars directly through its platform and get paid in 45 minutes. Sellers have access to standardised pricing and a transparent marketplace, with 100 percent visibility into price offers, and buyers get access to the largest selection of verified cars.

Cars45 is also promising vehicle financing, background checks, vehicle history, insurance, after-sales support, servicing and other ancillary services that consumers will need in their automotive lifecycle.

With retail locations already opened in Nairobi and Accra, Cars45 plans to increase its footprint in Ghana and Kenya even further by opening more centres in Mombasa, Tema, Kumasi and other cities. Cars45 also aims to expand into additional African markets in 2020.

Cars45 is also going big on its consumer-to-consumer marketplace that directly matches sellers and buyers across all markets it operates in. These will directly compete with marketplaces such as Cheki which has not seen any substantial growth for a number of years. Cars45 will bring in the energy that’s needed in the African automotive market where trust is not traditionally high.

All cars listed in the Cars45 marketplace have been through a thorough vetting process (200 point inspection, due diligence and background check) and will carry the trusted Cars45 inspection report. Cars45 will also conduct multi-level screening to ensure that only serious buyers are brought forward. Buyers will have full confidence in the purchase they are making and sellers will be protected by an escrow model.

Ghana and Kenya are the next logical steps for any company that aims to take on the pan-African automotive market and Cars45 confirm that after successfully establishing itself in Nigeria, expanding into Ghana and Kenya made perfect sense.

10 devastating mistakes that start-ups make

0

Undoubtedly, managing your business is a daunting task! Yes?

Whether it’s a small scale business or a huge establishment, you are bound to face ample challenges. Similarly, you might face many obstacles after launching your own start-up. But it can lead up-to success when handled right. There are always so many decisions involved, so many things to think about, all the pressure and minor set-backs, that can often de-track you.

I have associated with a start-up myself and trust me there is no such fool-proof plan to reach success but if we avoid various common and stupid mistakes, that can make or break your business, then no one can stop you from moving forward. But before I tell you about these common mistakes. Just know that everyone makes mistakes! Screwing things up, here and there can be costly, but in the long run, it teaches you valuable lessons and we can always learn from them.

All you need is a little bit of planning, smart business goals for your start-up and a wise mind. Learn from the tips given below and avoid these typical errors:

  1. Are you afraid of failing? Don’t be

It’s natural to be afraid. But it’s probably one of the biggest mistakes people usually make; being afraid of failure. ‘Failure is the key to success’, yes we often hear people say that and you gotta believe us, its’ TRUE! Facing your fears, and not letting it control you is very rewarding and positive for your future ventures. The real reward is when you get back up again after you have failed and learn from it rather than dwelling on past mistakes with continuous ‘oh, no’ ‘oh, no’.

Mostly, entrepreneurs or people in general, associate the word ‘fail’ with falling behind, having no or little capability of doing things, and losing! To be very honest, failure is definitely not how people think. Failure is ‘learning’. Even though not being able to achieve something hurts for a moment, but eventually, we succeed, if we try again.

I know when I started working with a start-up, not that I was a founder or anything, yet I took ownership. Their failure was my failure. I remember, after a year of struggle how we have maintained composure under conflicts and difficult situations! Boy oh boy, we failed in generating leads but did it stop us? Not for a second. Now, we have become one of the thriving small-scale companies that is helping global teams to enhance their productivity.

2. Lack of pre-planning!

Yes, we all know how tiresome planning can get! But without a solid plan for your business, you are searching for a needle in the haystack! (We don’t know how this punchline fits here, but it kinda does). The crucial plans that you should consider working on before you launch something of your own are business, financial and marketing plans to be precise.

So, yep! Plan ahead and get super organized. When you are building something new from scratch. There might be a number of tasks that are happening parallel to each other, or you might be taking on a number of roles on your own. So it’s important you set your priorities in order. First things first, last things last! It not only makes your work easier but also makes you far more productive.

3. Sticking to the wrong idea

You have an idea! Yes, we understand. It feels good and you just want to implement it right away before anyone in your circle steals it. Calm down, person! Hold your horses. Sometimes, only having just an idea is no good show. We all have ideas.

But you gotta realize that if you are entering a market you have never been before, it’s important you go in with the right idea and a careful thought process. Don’t just blindly follow your gut. Evaluate. Run experiments. Make cost estimates. Make tweaks in your ideas according to your audience and changing trends.

4. Being a Lone-wolf

I totally admit, sometimes it’s hard to trust and work with people. You might be afraid of professional partnerships, because of many examples of failed industry experiences. Totally understandable. Especially, when it’s your own product, you just want everything to be perfect. The reason why you might be afraid of giving control. You may not want to jeopardize your work but, we suggest… delegation.

Do proper paperwork, make documentation, download legal forms and then give other people some control. That way you will feel calmer and not overwhelmed. People who are working with you will have a direction and you won’t have to micromanage. Still, having a doubt whether the people are honestly working or just wasting your minimum resources? Use project management or staff time monitoring tools to set your tasks and time in perfect alignment to your goals. They will keep track of all the activities of your team. So you can just  sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!

5. Lack of effective marketing strategies

This is important! Your product is nothing without good marketing. You have developed a product, now you want to sell it. How will you do it? This is where marketing comes in. People will only buy it if they know about it. Right? Use word of mouth, digital marketing, advertising, and various other techniques. There are no rules, just a few simple techniques, and good luck charm.

But not all types of marketing can suit every business. Choose the one that resonates with your idea. But assuming that you don’t need a marketing plan is totally bonkers!

6. Spending all that you’ve got

You think that all you need to start a business or a company is a huge investment but the thinking is wrong! We feel like maybe that’s the only way to have and attract large conversions. That may be right in many cases but if you explore a little bit more you’ll see there are many alternatives available that are less expensive when compared with the luxury advertisement. It’s essential that you stick to a budget and maintain a perfect balance between over and under spending.

Keeping your documents in electronic form also helps you track expenses in real-time, providing a clear and up-to-date picture of where your money is going. This visibility allows you to identify spending patterns and pinpoint areas where you might be overspending. With digital records, it’s easier to categorize expenses, making it simpler to manage budgets and forecast future costs. Moreover, you can easily share and review them with your team or financial advisors, facilitating better decision-making.

7. No Market Research

Doing little or no market research is probably the last thing you should do! Do extensive research before stepping into the game rather than just relying on public data. It is an important step to blast that rocket off from the ground and straight into the space. Know the nature of your venture, know your target audience, demographics. Prepare yourself. Know what’s in demand. You can either do it on your own or hire someone to do it for you.

8. Ignoring start-up competition

Entrepreneurs everywhere are paranoid. They are hungry for competition, so to speak. They like to keep a keen eye at their competitors and ready to take them out as they enter the ‘Game of start-ups’. All fighting for a top spot with hell lotta determination and enthusiasm!

That’s the real challenge, my friend! Every other company is here to meet the needs of customers, but that’s not it. The success depends on your ability to satisfy your consumers far better than your competition. So before you start, identify your competitors, the place they hold, what are their objectives, strategies, strengths, and weaknesses. Based on which map-out the value that you can bring that’s different from what they are offering!

9. Not enjoying the journey

Not having fun? Why not? You finally have an opportunity to live your dream. To fulfill that long-desired purpose of yours. You get to be the CEO and the founder. Stop worrying too much! Life is no doubt full of surprises. You either get what you want or you don’t. Still, enjoy the journey. It may take time for you to get there but eventually, you will and that’s the beauty of it.

10. What’s your back-up plan?

You have an idea. You have a team. You have the resources. You are all set. Your product is finally in the market. Going good. After a few months, something unexpected happened. You are back to where you were. It all went down the drain. What will you do? Do you have a plan? Have you figured it all out? No? Then you might as well do it right now. Create your essential back-up plan beforehand, in case of a devastating situation and save yourself a nightmare altogether.

This is just a sneak peek into the mistakes many entrepreneurs make when launching a start-up. Whereas the mistakes are endless. It can also be: losing motivation, not keeping up with tech trends, not networking much, moving too slow or too fast, thinking too small or too big, launching at the wrong time, ignoring the facts, and just getting it all wrong!

Don’t panic! Maintain your composure, calm your nerves and take the first step!

Significance and Benefits of Writing a Business Blog

0

Keeping your potential and target audience involved in your product is your primary focus. In order to fulfill this need of your business, you have to come up with creative ideas that will enable more connectivity and engagement with your audience. Keeping a business blog might just be the right thing to do for a number of reasons.

The Internet is a great place. It allows a lot of space to grow if you are keeping a business, promoting through this platform; and when we say platform, we mean a variety of platforms that allows a business marketer use different techniques to advertise the given service. The smartness of these marketers depends on their ability to make strong strategies in order to keep their business afloat – which can only be done if the revenue is being constantly generated and the ups-and-downs are managed well.

One of the strategies that these marketers employ is taking on board the idea of keeping a business blog that caters the needs of the audience. The purpose of this blog is to keep the audience updated about all the changes and news-updates regarding your services. You have a website and to keep it fresh and new, you need to keep posting blogs about your business regularly or, at least, at reasonable intervals. You can set up a calendar or make a schedule for blog posting so that your audience keeps checking your website.

Why Blogs?

You must be thinking why you need to add a separate page for blogs when your website already has the content sufficient to detail on your products. The answer is simple. Not all your audience is interested in reading solely about your products. They could be interested in learning about things related to the services you are providing. Your website only contains formal and specific content regarding your services. A complete engagement involves something beyond the limits of technical information. You can add some knowledgeable content that interests your audience. You can, in fact, talk about latest or expected news updates. Blog writing is not formal and your audience is not a specific type. There would be people looking forward to reading some juicy news, written in informal manner. Then there would be people strictly interested in reading about specific details. Your job is to cater to the needs of every person out there on the internet, and the way to do it is by offering a variety of people the content they need and its specific types.

Benefits of Keeping Business Blogs section on your Website

It is through words that you communicate your feelings with the other person. Words have the ability to connect you with a variety of people who share similar interests. They have the ability to connect with those that have not yet explored their own interests. A separate section for blogs on your website has the same purpose: to communicate with a variety of audiences, to interest them in the areas that remotely or greatly concern them. Here are a few benefits of business blogging:

Nurtures Loyalty

Everybody relies on internet these days for any kind of information they need. In the same manner, all the businesses find internet to be one of the greatest means of connecting with their potential audience. There is no other way to build a trustable relation with your customer/audience than by being directly in contact with them. Although direct connection usually involves physically meeting with the client but internet has now made it even more convenient and useful by simply allowing virtual spaces to connect with far-off people. If you have a good internet connection – for example, if you have used one from Mediacom internet deals, you would know the convenience a good internet connection brings to your life – you would also be aware of how greatly it helps in promoting your business. The point being, this close connection, that business blogging allows, will nurture loyalty with your audience. Once you write about everything your audience wants to learn about and they have their questions answered, you will gradually gain their trust. Not only your trust, but also they will also become your regular visitors.

Gains Customer Base

Once the traffic becomes your regular visitors, there is a good chance that they will turn into customers. Isn’t that exactly what you need? The more content you write and the larger areas you cover when you publish blogs on your website, the more traffic you attract. Make sure you have diversity in the traffic you attract so that you have every type of public attention.

Attracts More Attention

People strictly restricted to knowing the specific details of your services can look on your website and find the answers to their questions, but people who are more interested in learning about side-advantages, broader information and regular updates need separate sections that fulfill their needs. Business blogging always helps in attracting public because it not only covers specific information but also detail on the side-information.

Hiring and Recruiting

If business blogging is related to your business specifically and updates the public about what is going around, then you have a separate space on your website where you can mention jobs and other offers.

To Resolve PR Concerns

In case there is some unfortunate occurrence in your business like your services had a minor setback and your customer base was affected or disturbed, you can always use this area to address such issues. Following the September 2018 Apple special vent, no affordable successor was announced but all the rumours around the news sources reveal it might be released in the first or second phase of 2020.

Another thing to note on the phone is that there is a likelihood to have an A 13 chipset which is found in the iPhone 11, a 3GB RAM but with an iPhone 8 design close to up to 4.7 inch LCD screen.

The home button of the Iphone SE I also projected to have a touch ID instead of the face ID.

Besides it being a  compact handset and a quite affordable price range foreseen to cost around $ 280 for the 32GB capacity and  $450 for the 128 GB capacity, the phone will have an updated iOs 12 which is Apple’s  latest software

Although Apple never explained the sudden discontinuation of the iPhone SE 2, there is still a huge number of customers who still hold onto it besides the more than enough classic releases that have followed.

Jumia Kenya is downsizing| Starts banner advertising to bolster revenues

0

Jumia Kenya is downsizing, just weeks after it announced the closure of its e-tail site in Tanzania and weeks after it did the same in Cameroon.

Jumia Kenya MD Sam Chappatte in a memo to all departments said, the firm is laying off 6% of its staff in Kenya (30 people) and that some of the staff will not be reporting to the firm early in 2020.

In an email to press Jumia said, “
The business environment and operating costs in the markets in which we operate are critical to our sustained success. After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to undergo some headcount reductions across our business verticals and geographies. While decisions like these are always difficult, we need to put our focus and resources where they can bring the best value and help Jumia thrive. We are supporting all impacted employees during this period of transition.”

Two weeks ago, Jumia closed shop in Tanzania to review its path to success. The firm announced that while Tanzania has strong potential, it had to focus its resources on its other markets. Safaricom’s Masoko also painfully pivoted from an etail store to an inhouse gadget shop selling the telco’s partner devices.

“This decision isn’t easy but will help put our focus and resources where they can bring the best value and help Jumia thrive.”

This closure in Tanzania followed a similar move in Cameroon on 18th November with the same view of putting its focus and resources on mature markets.

In a statement, Jumia Co-Founders Sacha Poignonnec and Jeremy Hodara said: “Jumia is grateful to its employees in Cameroon for the hard work over the past five years and we know that Cameroon is not short of talent. The team has fought to change the way business is done and with the support of its employees, the company has proven to be the leading eCommerce in the region. This would not be possible without the combined efforts, great contribution and dedication of our Jumia Cameroon team.“

In Cameroon, Jumia also announced it will continue to support buyers and vendors via its classifieds portal, previously called Jumia Deals and which will now be the main portal jumia.cm.

Though Jumia is generally struggling due to poor uptake of e-commerce in Africa, the firm also needed to streamline its operations and run like a lean startup and hire more local staff who are more affordable pegged to its revenues.

Jumia Nigeria, on the other hand, has opened up its e-commerce platform to brands and corporate organizations to advertise.

The company’s Head of Growth & Partnerships, Olusegun Martins said being the most visited in Nigeria and being present in 12 countries in Africa, the platform saw itself as best placed for advertising for other brands.

“We are much more than “e-commerce”, we have hotels, flights, restaurants, classifieds portals, and many more platforms, which give us even more data and more ability to target the right audience for brands looking to reach a wider and more targeted audience,” Martin said.

Jumia aims to help brands build awareness, engagement and increase their, sales. Jumia aims to help brands target users geographically and also use it as a source of research, inspiration and shopping.

“We decided to open our platform starting from last month (October). There is a huge opportunity for brands to showcase their services and products to our audience and that is why we opened our platform. The way we want the brands to look at it is to think of Jumia as a search engine. The perception is that people come to Jumia to buy only. This is not entirely the case. A large chunk of people that come to Jumia come to make informed decisions; at that point when they are searching, their minds are receptive to whatever communication is available. So, people need to look at Jumia as a search engine,” Martins said.

According to him, Jumia has already established a close working relationship with a few strategic agencies who have indicated long term interests in partnering with the company over the new advertising platform.

Apart from vendors, Jumia will now reach out to banks, insurance companies, telcos and different sectors of brands to reach their targets by placing an Ad on its platform. Jumia will likely also work in other ad networks or exchanges to increase its revenues!

Huawuei Set To Roll Out Harmony Operating System From 2020

0

Huawei has announced it will roll out its new Harmony Operating System (OS) to some of its products from next year following incidents it has had with the US government.

Huawei says it’s Harmony OS will power a number of its products and this will also include devices, even though the firm has not said which ones at this point.

Huawei unveiled the proprietary OS early August this year which will work as an alternative to Google’s Android following the ongoing trade restrictions by the US government.

The OS according to Wang Chenglu, The President of Huawei Consumer Group’s software division, “the OS is rolled currently  to smartwatches, speakers and other virtual reality devices”

“The phone will stick to the Android OS in the meantime”, he added.

As cited by  Reuters, the Harmony OS was first connected to a smart TV as its first product to use.

Currently, no smartphone has been connected to the Harmony OS and chances are Huawei might be skeptical to use it on its premium or high-end products.

Firstly, because the market might shun away from the products especially its functionality with the new OS.

Secondly, no OS is perfect, especially at the early stages. Harmony OS might take time to come into shape and be as smooth and perfect as Android OS which powers the biggest part of mobile smartphones globally.

in the market, there are only two successful players in the mobile operating system that have been recorded or rather are successful. The two systems are that of  Google’s Android OS and iPhone iOs.

As by Ircrwireless, if harmony happens to a viable competitor to the current operating systems then convincing the market to adopt it will be challenging.

Some unidentified sources note that the Os has the potential to the National OS of China.

Neil Shah, Research Director for Devices and Ecosystems at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, according to Techradar.

“Huawei has a big chance to scale the OS in China across multiple device categories and to build a robust developer community as at the moment, the  Chinese government is pushing for a ‘national OS’  become less reliant on foreign providers like Microsoft and Google”

He added that,  if other Chinese brands such as Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi are pushed to develop smartphones and other products such as TVs, the Harmony will definitely scale to become more attractive to the market.

This is because Chinese brands hold more than 40 percent of the smartphone market share globally.

Statistics by counterpoint reveal that Huawei holds 15.8 per cent, Xiaomi 9 per cent, Oppo 8.1 per cent, Vivo 7.5 per cent, Lenovo 2.6 Per cent and Realme 1.3 per cent as of quarter of 2019.

Secondly, Neil argues that the Microkernel architecture of Harmony OS which is quite disruptive and scalable put’s it at the forefront of its competitors who are yet to adopt it.

Another analysis by Researcher Jeff Kagan, argues that if the US ban is not lifted, things can get tough for Huawei.

He points out that, in as much as the Chinese government is in support of Harmony rollout, there is no guarantee users will love it.

Chances or Huawei surviving and Harmony working are high but the future is not as pretty for them.

Crypto Valley Venture Capital to set up Africa chapter in Mauritius

Crypto Valley Venture Capital (CV VC), an investment company, visited Mauritius as part of a delegation led by the Swiss Blockchain Federation and organised by the Swiss Embassy on 21-22 November 2019, which sought to build ‘blockchain bridges’ between the two continental FinTech hubs.

Speaking in Mauritius, Véronique Haller, Deputy Head of Mission at the Swiss Embassy, explained that the Swiss delegation had come to Mauritius because it saw tremendous potential for collaboration between the two countries in relation to blockchain. She highlighted that both “Switzerland in Europe and Mauritius in Africa are seen as leaders to enable research and innovation to translate into business”, and that both countries shared a “hardworking and confident spirit”.

Mathias Ruch, Founder and CEO of CV VC, presented CV VC’s approach to creating a blockchain technology ecosystem for Africa at three seminars with the participation of leading stakeholders from Mauritius. The first seminar was held on 21 November at Hennessy Park Hotel, in collaboration with the Swiss Embassy and the Economic Development Board of Mauritius, and the second was held on 22 November at the University of Mauritius. The events were supported by a number of actors from Switzerland including the Swiss Blockchain Federation, Swiss Global Enterprise and the Cardano Foundation. A third seminar was organised at the African Leadership College during the visit.

Commenting on the visit, Mathias Ruch, said: “My visit to Mauritius has shown me that there is a strong will to use technology as a driving force for progress across the continent. Like Switzerland in Europe, which is home to over 800 companies active in the blockchain arena, Mauritius has the potential to emerge as a leading hub in Africa for the development of a blockchain ecosystem, with the necessary framework, infrastructure, talent and capital for this to thrive.”

“At CV VC, we have become an important and renowned institution for regional and international startups, and we have already taken our first steps in Africa through our CV Labs Incubation Program, where we have invested in two Blockchain startups with South African roots. We want to do our part and contribute to a growing and flourishing blockchain ecosystem in Africa by supporting entrepreneurs with great ideas and giving them a chance to focus on the development of their ideas and products. We believe that innovation based on blockchain technology knows no borders and we are excited about the opportunities to build the ecosystem from Mauritius.”

With a view to reinforcing its role in developing the blockchain ecosystem, CV VC is currently evaluating the potential establishment of a CV VC African Chapter as a private sector initiative which would seek to establish a blockchain hub in Mauritius for the whole of Africa, as an important financial and scientific hub.

Huawei Files Petition in Court Against The US Subsidy Ban

0

Huawei has filed a petition to a US court to overturn a ban imposed to the company last month.

According to the petition, the ban bars rural companies from using government subsidy funds to buy equipment from Huawei together with Its rival telecommunication company ZTE.

The ban is based on grounds that the two companies are a threat to national security.

Previously Us companies were warned against buying any types of equipment from the telcos citing them as foreign adversaries.

The US Federal Communication Commission(FCC)  summoned dependent telco’s to cancel or replace existing services. The commission went ahead to ban Huawei and ZTE from accessing the $8.5 billion a year Universal Service Fund (USF)

According to the FCC, the funds are meant to support the rural companies to replace the equipment previously bought from the Chinese telcos.

By terming the companies a national security threat this means they are not liable to receive any funds.

Us and China have had trade wars which led to the assumptions that the Chineses government could exploit the companies to spy on Americans.

Yahoo reveals that the US campaign against Huawei is motivated by fears that the company is a potential security threat citing from their founder Ren Zhengfei an  EX army engineer for China.

Last month, Ajit Pai, the chairman of the FCC said that the two companies have a close relationship with China’s communist and military apparatus which concludes that they are indeed a threat to the US.

Ahead of the initial ban, the two companies were been granted permits to continue to operate in the US with the latest one end to end in February 2020.

According to a source from the Verge, the companies were granted the licenses only to give more room for rural wireless carriers that rely on Huawei products to change their equipment.

Huawei has constantly denied the allegations which Washington has provided no proof for their accusations.

The company also termed the ruling unlawful and exceeds its statutory roles as a commission.

The petition if passed will give Huawei access to have rural companies purchase equipment using the funds as well as recall back their legal protections.

According to Andy Purdy, the Chief Security Officer for Huawei USA, ” This is our opportunity to use one fo the legally permissible mechanisms to try to block the United States government  from destroying us around the world,”

Glen Nager the lead counsel for Huawei in an interview with CNBC, concluded that the allegations are based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the Chinese law on unsound, baseless, unreliable and inadmissible accusations that lack evidence.

She also added that FCC’s decision to bar the companies from using the funds to buy equipment from Huawei is unlawful and exceeds the agency’s statutory authority as it is not allowed to make national security judgement.

What Employers Look For When Stalking Your Social Media

0
Employers stalk your social media and not just your LinkedIn.

It is very easy to get a sense of who you are by stalking your social media. You have probably put all the right information on your LinkedIn then forgotten all your other social media accounts. You’re probably private but accept everyone and anyone so information can still be seen and tracked. Let’s not forget that the internet never forgets so at the end of the day you will never be a ghost on social media as long as you have posted at any point.

1. They will check how you describe yourself

Do you know how every social media platform has an “about me” part? If you opened your Facebook account when you were 15, you probably mentioned how much you loved the mall and cartoons, now that you’re an adult you need to update your profile and ask yourself “what would an employer think?” if they saw this? They will want to know if who you have described yourself on the CV and the person that you wrote about on the page actually match. They will also be checking your grammar because this shows the level of seriousness you actually give yourself as a person. If you can give out a professional and authentic look on social media then you’re more likely to be serious as a person, which is a great thing.

2. Who do you follow?

Yes, trust that there’s someone who will have the time to check the pages and people you follow. They will probably be looking to see if you actually follow serious people or companies that are in line with your career. Following others in your industry is a smart thing to do no matter what, watching their feeds can give you a scoop on a new job opening, company announcements, the latest tech and much more. If the only people you’re following are musicians and love& hip hop then you’re not someone who will appear to be serious and that’s just the reality.

3. Photos and captions

What do you post under photos when you post them? Using bad language to describe yourself like ” bad gyal b**tch” won’t cut it. Do you say inspirational things? do you post with purpose? What kind of photos do you post? Do they make you look unserious and like a teenager? Be very careful what you post, if you keep posting photos of you out in the club with booze and shisha then a hirer will most likely assume that you will spend most of your time out and perceive you as unserious.

4. Where have you been tagged?

What kind of posts do people tag you in? This tells a lot about you because if the only posts you’re tagged in are of the next party coming or of you drunk on a couch somewhere then there’s a problem. Always tell people to not tag you in things that can ruin your reputation.

5. The posts people post on your wall if it’s on Facebook

What kind of posts do people publish on your wall? And what’s your response? Limit vulgar language at all times, don’t post useless memes and never post anything sexual. Remember that your social media profiles open doors to other opportunities.

How to Save Your Construction Business Money

0

Running a construction business isn’t easy. There are a lot of little things you need to take care of each day and if you aren’t careful you can quickly find yourself spending more money than you’re able. But with a few simple changes, you can start saving your construction business a little bit of money and generate more of a profit. Here are 5 tips you can use if you have a construction business and you want to start saving some money:

Hire the Right People

The most important thing you can do is hire the right people. This goes not just for the people working directly with you, such as office assistants, but also for any subcontractors that you hire. If you hire the wrong people, they will end up costing you more money than they are worth. It’s tempting to rush through the hiring process in the beginning because it feels like a longer process would cost you more money. But the money you invest now in properly vetting all candidates will pay dividends in the long run. Only work with the best people so that you can feel secure knowing each dollar is well spent.

Rent Your Tools, Don’t Buy

Sometimes you have a job to do that requires a tool you don’t use very often. Rather than buying the tool, you should consider renting it. According to Red-D-Arc, a welder rental in Houston TX, “Renting equipment, such as a welder, rather than buying it can save your business significantly when it comes to job costs.” You should only buy tools that you will need to use repeatedly in order to justify the cost. Whenever you need a tool that you don’t use much, look for options in your area to rent it rather than buying it.

Make Use of Technology

To really save money at your construction business you need to incorporate the latest technology. There are a few ways you can do this. One example is making use of remote site planning services. If the site permit doesn’t require a stamp from a surveyor, architect or engineer, you can use one of these tools to plan out your build with the use of satellite imaging. This saves you the significant cost of having to inspect the site yourself or hiring a surveyor.

Another way you can use technology is to track the progress of your projects. One of the biggest reasons construction businesses lose money is because they take longer than planned. By tracking everything you are doing with some construction management software, you’ll have an easier time sticking to your schedule.

Finally, you can get some productivity apps for your team. These apps will help to motivate your employees to get their work done faster, which in turn will save you money. There are plenty of ways that technology can improve your business, so take the time to explore your options, then incorporate some of these solutions into your business.

Buy in Bulk

For businesses that have multiple projects going on, you don’t want your subcontractors in charge of buying materials. It’s better if you handle it from the top, as you can then buy everything in bulk. Bulk purchasing is often significantly cheaper and more efficient. It will take a little more organization and communication to ensure you get the right supplies for all your projects, but the cost savings are definitely worth it. Talk to your suppliers, or find new suppliers, about the bulk options they have available. They can likely offer you a discount that will provide plenty of relief to your budget.

Constantly Review Your Business

Finally, you need to perform regular reviews of your construction business. Maybe you bought a piece of software thinking it would help, but now you’re just paying a monthly fee for something you don’t really use. Or maybe one of your subcontracted teams is significantly slower than the others. Without regular checkups, you’ll have no way of knowing which parts of your business are performing well and which ones need improvement. Once you identify these areas, you can then work to find the right solution and get things back on track.

Keeping your costs under control is one of the hardest things for any construction business to do, but it’s also the most important. Hopefully with the tips above you’ll be able to rein in the costs of your business a little more and start generating more of a profit. It will take some time, but the end results are well worth the investment.

Find out What Is Pest Control For and its Requirements?

0

By Digvijay Singh Kanwar

People in Phoenix, Arizona enjoy sunny, dry weather year round – unfortunately so do a lot of pests, and we encounter a variety of bugs and other creepy crawlies that not a lot of other people living in other states experience. As such, it’s not at all surprising that pest control companies in Phoenix, Arizona are much needed by people all over the state.

After all, the quality of life we have today can be attributed to 3 things: better medicine, better sanitation, and yes, better pest control.

Spiders and scorpions are two of the most fearsome pests that plague residential and commercial properties in AZ, and one of the most damaging pests of all – termites – are also quite common as the state sits on top of one of the most active subterranean termite belts in the country.

While pests are a part of everyday life in almost all households across the country (and the world), sometimes they’re more than just a nuisance and pose a real danger, whether that’s by destroying property or by spreading diseases.

In cases where a pest is only a nuisance, their numbers can grow to such an extent that they disrupt our daily activities. They may also attract other unwanted pests into your home since they serve as a food source.

In more urgent cases such as a termite infestation, you’d be left with hundreds if not thousands of dollars’ worth of property damage.

Rats and mice are known to spread diseases, and you may be surprised to know that rats bite more than 40,000 people each year – rat bite fever, salmonella, and leptospirosis are just some of the diseases they leave people with, either by direct contact or by exposure to their urine and feces. Rats also love chewing through wiring, leaving you with electrical issues or worse, a fire.

You may be surprised that a lot of commercial spaces forego pest control services especially if they are small businesses. But when these pests are left unchecked and the few employees there are no longer able to deal with them, the business owner is left with more problems than if they’d just allocated the budget for proper pest control in the first place.

What do pest control workers do?

Pest control workers are equipped with an arsenal of pest management techniques to locate, identify, and exterminate or remove unwanted pests.

A pest by definition is a destructive insect or other animal that attacks food, crops, livestock, etc. and common indoor pests for both commercial and residential properties include rats, mice, cockroaches, ants, termites, and bedbugs.

A pest control worker would have the expertise and access to tools needed to eliminate a pest problem as effectively and safely as possible. They’ll also be able to work with the property owner in designing and/or implementing pest control strategies.

Most pest control companies now go beyond mere pest extermination and include proper sanitation and property exclusion for integrated pest management. That is, proper sanitation goes a long way to warding off pests. If there are no readily available food sources for pests – such as dirty dishes left in the sink overnight for cockroaches, or open trash receptacles for rats to go through – then your property becomes significantly less attractive for them. And property exclusion means preventing future infestations by making sure pests can’t enter in the first place. That includes measures such as sealing cracks and crevices where pests can squeeze their way through.

What do pest control workers need?

Of course, because of the nature of the job, pest control workers must be in good health. They must be able to withstand working in very uncomfortable conditions in the heat or cold, and be physically fit enough to crawl in tight spaces.

Because pests and pest control methods change, pest workers also often attend continuing education on pest management.

Last but not the least, pest control workers must be licensed. They are educated in pesticide safety and use. They undergo training and pass an examination. Requirements vary by state, but generally entry level pest workers need to have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass a background check as well as other additional requirements for that state.

So if you have a pest problem you need help dealing with, get in touch with pest control companies in Phoenix, AZ for professional assistance.
