Its official: Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is back as the ‘Note Fan Edition’ with Bixby and a reduced price

0

After so many rumors, Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has finally come back as the Galaxy Note Fan Edition. The previous version had a battery defect that made it explode which led to Samsung recalling every single unit they could. They then vowed to fix the issue and then resell a refurbished version of the phone as an environmental safety measure, as opposed to disposing all those electronic devices. The company also had the dilemma of re-introducing the Note 7 in a manner that does not steal the thunder of the upcoming Note 8, so they decided to release it in small batches and in few regions. Meet the Galaxy Note Fan Edition, does it measure up to its amazing predecessor? I think it does.

Everything seems to have remained the same from the design to internals. The only difference is a reduction in battery size from 3500mAh to 3200mAh. This change was necessary due to the fact that the previous battery was making the internal dimensions of the phone too tight which led to the reported explosions. Samsung now subjects its batteries through a rigorous 8-point safety test to ensure that the defects never occur again, the practice was started during the production of the Galaxy note 8.

Will the reduction of the battery size matter? Not so much, this is due to the optimizations brought by the Android 7.1 Nougat and Samsung’s own implementation. As a consolation of sorts, the Galaxy Note FE will come with the Bixby as it is part of the new software version; that effectively puts this phone on par with the new Galaxy S8 and S8+.

The rest of the specs remain the same as previous Note 7, that is to say that it is still one of the faster phones out there and can handle everything that a 2017 phone can. To quickly recap the internals, we have a 5.7inch QHD AMOLED display which was the first to come with HDR 10 support, an octa core Exynos 8890 processor accompanied by a 12-core Mali T880 GPU, this setup is coupled with 4GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage expandable to 256GB. A 12MP camera with optical image stabilization and a super wide f/1.7 aperture graces the back while the front settles for a 5MP camera with auto-HDR. The phone is waterproof, has fingerprint scanner and an iris scanner on the front while the back holds the heart rate monitor. True to the Galaxy Note signature feature, the FE supports a comprehensive stylus software package and an input accessory dubbed S Pen.

Samsung is initially releasing the Galaxy Note FE in their home country – Korea – with other regions launch to ‘be decided later’. Only 400,000 units are going on sale at a reduced price of $611 compared to the $750+ of the Note 7, I have a feeling that they will be sold out in less than a month. Let’s hope Samsung got it right this time round and that they release the device in Africa too, in that order.

The fastest phone in the world is not from Samsung nor Apple according to latest Antutu rankings

0

Every time there is a chart ranking the superiority of Smartphones, more often than not, Samsung and Apple appear at the top of the list, from best cameras to best phones overall and even highest profit margins.  However, every once in a while, an underdog battles its way up the ladder and disrupts the status quo. In this case, the best performing Smartphone in terms of Antutu benchmark speed test was none other than the HTC U11, the same phone whose camera was recently crowned as the highest rated shooter by the photography ranking site DxOMark.com.  HTC seems to be having one hell of a comeback with this one.

Current Rankings  (Top 5)

  1. HTC U11 180,079
  2. iPhone 7 Plus 174,299
  3. Xiaomi Mi 6 172,494
  4. Samsung Galaxy S8 172,368
  5. Samsung Galaxy S8+ 172,359

NOTE: These rankings are based on the average scores of the Antutu benchmark results

Now some might be wondering how HTC dethroned the usual tech giants, here is a possible explanation. Software updates usually have a lot to do with a phone’s overall performance, Apple just released iOS 10.3 update, some reports say that this version might be the reason for the lower benchmark results.  On the other hand, HTC has issued updates of their own, despite the U11 running the same hardware as the US based Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8+, the company has driven towards a leaner version of their Sense UI skin, most apps that have a stock version such as the music player and calendar have remained unchanged. Previously, we saw manufactures having duplicate apps for instance, HTC calendar used to be accompanied by a stock Google Calendar, this trend has stopped a nd its benefits have already started manifesting themselves. It’s still an amazing feat for HTC to beat Apple considering that the latter company controls both their software and hardware in-house, to fine tune them to work together seamlessly unlike the off-the-counter approach of the Android OS.

Lastly, it’s very interesting for Xiaomi Mi 6 to fall at number 3 given that it is only half the price of most phones on the list, not to mention that it comes from a company whose age is still in single digits, very impressive. This revelation enforces the argument that customers ought to go for value over brand.

Priceslash is Offering Low Prices on Products and Services

0

Whe it comes to customer service, ecommerce platforms might not be the best at offering that because there’s that disconnect, and online shoppers seem to be on their own.

Priceslash was launched to be a customer-driven online retail solution.

Launched on 20th of March 2017 by Ifidon Irivboje and Ibe Kingsley, Priceslash is  creating value for customers by providing them access to low prices on products and services.

According to the team, “we understand the stress of searching endlessly without finding what you want. Our on-demand service lets us do all the moving around for you”.

While acknowledging the importance of sales, the founders of Priceslash believe the absence of customer satisfaction does not guarantee a successful business model. This then begs the question of how Priceslash is able to create value while delivering low prices.

The platform has partnered with a number of as local manufacturers and SMLRs (Small Medium and Large Retailers) who deal primarily in locally-sourced and produced items. These products according to the team go through a rigorous process of quality control to ensure that the final product delivered to the customer meets or even exceeds their expectations.

Customer are also assured of a 48-hour money back guarantee on defective items.

With people constantly seeking for products that would fit their pocket size, Priceslash sure has a potential to  scale up in no time. The team also claims to have made significant sales, which proves the validity of the business model.

MAXGo is Providing Lagosians with On-Demand Motorcycle Transportation Service

0

Commuting in Lagos has for long been a real challenge, and recently there’s been a significant increase in the number of startups aiming to make this easier with eHailing services. While eHailing platforms such as Uber, GoMyWay, Taxify and others have made it easy to get a ride without having to wait at crowded bus-stops and struggle to board uncomfortable public buses, the challenge of sitting for hours in traffic still remains.

MAXGo is attempting to address this challenge, disrupt the eHailing service industry and enable Lagosians escape the daily traffic with it’s motorcycle transport service.

Launched by the Max.ng team, MAXGo is the first ever mobile app for motorcycle transportation in Nigeria.

Just like ride-sharing apps like Uber and co, MAXGo provides Lagosians with the ability to book a motorcycle ride from their mobile phones.

Users book a ride by entering their location and destination, then the app connects them with the closest ‘Champion’ (riders). On arrival, a user is then handed a hairnet and helmet for safety. The platform bill per kilometer, and promises to provide users with passenger liability insurance, in the undesirable event of an accident.

MAXGo uses real-time electornic system to track and monitor all approved motorcycle operators, carries out background checks and management of all motorcycle operators.

“Motorcycle transportation has potential but poor implementation has thwarted its efforts. MAX will help solve the problem with professional management and technology integration,” says Chinedu Azodoh, MAX.ng co-founder. “MAXGo will provide jobs for youths in Lagos, which will, therefore, result in fewer people on the streets”.

Just like similar apps, Nigerians also have the opportunity of cashing out by joining the Champion/Partner network. To join, they simply sign up as riders (Champions) or as motorcycle owners (Partners). “There’s a huge opportunity for Nigerians to make money by joining the network,” Lanre Sonola, Chief Marketing Officer – MAX.ng added. “The market is far wider with MAXGo; users avoid traffic, pay pocket-friendly rates and enjoy security. It is also a lot easier for partners to join the network, with their motorcycles.”

MAXGo was launched on the June 23rd with a fleet of about 100 motorcycles to serve the Yaba, VI, Marina, Ikoyi and Lekki Phase 1 axes. According to the team the motorcycles have 200cc engines.

The platform is currently  is available on Android, with plans to include an iOS app.

The new Infinix Note 4 officially goes on sale at Jumia

0

The Infinix Note series is popular for its long battery life, in fact it is one of the most successful product lines of that company. They have even started importing some of its features to their other offerings such as the 4000mAh battery on the Infinix Hot 4. Now that the Infinix Note 3 and its Pro brother have been around for long enough, their successor is finally here with us.

Meet the new deign of the Infinix Note 4, the fingerprint scanner is now mounted at the front, the back is curved and shiny.

Meet the Infinix Note 4, it just went on sale at Jumia Kenya with a brand new design and internals. The design has a 2.5D curved glass, like on the Infinix Zero 4, but with a new curved back cover that they are calling ‘metal print’.  It looks amazing and seems to reflect light in a way that gives a shiny polished premium look. The device not only has a rear design that slightly resembles the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, it also has an X Pen accessory that is sold separately; the pen coincidentally looks like the S Pen. However, the X pen does not have a hide-away slot on the phone unlike the Galaxy Note 5.

The new Note 4’s screen has been shrunk to 5.7inches from the previous 6 inches. Resolution, however, remains at Full HD (1080p) with a display that goes up to 500 nits of brightness ensuring better sunlight visibility, below the screen is the front mounted fingerprint scanner. Powering the device is an unnamed octa-core processor but clues lead to a Mediatek 6753 chipset, the same one on the Note 3, it is powerful and affordable enough to strike the right balance of value. In addition, the device incorporates 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage that is expandable to 128 GB. The camera department hosts a 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash and an 8MP front facing shooter.

Infinix seems to be most proud of their achievement with the battery, after all, the Note series is all about longevity, they have equipped the phone with a whopping 4,300mAh battery. It can takes only 5 minutes of charging to give 2 hours of call time or 6 hours of offline music playback; plug it in for 30 minutes and you will get 45% charge; this impressive numbers are capable thanks to the great X Charge technology on-board.

There seems to be a sandstone rear casing version too

The phone is available right now at Jumia for only KSh 13,999 which is quite reasonable considering the what you get with the overall package. Sales at normal brick and mortar stores are set to start soon too but for now, only Jumia has the exclusivity.

Regexpress Launches to Ease the Process of Car Documents Renewal

0

Getting car documents is one very challenging task in Nigeria, and a number of people have gotten into the habit of plying the road without the required driver’s license and other car particulars.

But Regexpress has been launched to put that in the past, and make it easy for Nigerians to renew their car particulars.

Launched in October 2016 by Oyeniran Samuel Sanmi, Regexpress is as an online platform that allows car owners to renew their car particulars by simply placing an order for car particular renewal. The Regexpress team then takes upon themselves to go through the hassles that comes with renewing car particulars.

Documents that can be gotten and renewed via the platform include road worthiness, vehicle license and insurance. Another interesting feature on Regexpress is the reminder service. In other not to be taken unawares and held as defaulters, users can set reminders for when any of their car particulars would be expiring, and then allow the Regexpress team help with renewal process immediately. They also offer free support whenever issues with car particulars arise.

According to the team, “renewing your car papers is what we do. Instead of having to go to 3 places places to get your papers renewed. We do all the walking around and have it delivered to you in 24 hrs”

Despite not being the first offering this services, with competitors such as Iwemoto and Carreg, the founder believes that Regexpress’ affordability would give them an edge.

Swiftkey Keyboard finally gets GIFs and much more in new update

0

GIFs have become the trend in social networks these days. Some people have resulted to using them to express their emotions during chats, a task that was previously handled by emojis. Fun fact: GIFs were created in 1987, this makes them older than most people who use them today despite that, users want them and that is why developers are busy adapting them in their modern platforms.

Swiftkey, the popular keyboard app, has decided to integrate GIFs in their latest update. The feature is accessible from the Emoji section. You will find categories with different GIFs to represent a certain emotion; the categories range from happy, sad, angry, bored and much more. If you were not a fan of GIFs, you will have a bad time on social media since Swiftkey has half-a-billion installs and counting, hopefully not all of them will use the feature (I personally can’t wait to spread them all over).

In addition to GIFs, the update also brings transliteration; this is where words are transcribed into corresponding letters of another language’s alphabet, for instance, from Russia alphabet to English. The support was already available but the update brings in new languages such as Bangla, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Lastly, those who use hardware keyboards that are connected to their android devices via Bluetooth will be happy to know that Swiftkey will support the typing shortcuts. In addition, the usual fixing of bugs and glitches is also part of the update.

Head over to the Google Playstore and get the new update while it’s still hot, it will be rolled out gradually to all users, so don’t panic if it hasn’t come your way.

M-Akiba second offer of KSh 1 Billion gets launched with PesaLink option

0

M-Akiba was an initiative by the National Treasury to enable citizens to purchase bonds from as low as KSh 3,000. The first offer was aiming to raise KSh 150 Million which was successfully achieved.

The Treasury today launched the second offer whose objective is to raise Kshs 1 billion. New changes have been made to help achieve this significantly bigger target;  PesaLink will be the new avenue of buying the bond. The advantage with PesaLink is that it offers up to KSh 999,999 in money transfer which is almost 8 times more than the KSh 140,000 limit of the mobile money services that were used in the initial offer. For those who still want to continue using the usual mobile money transfer, the option is still available. Even better, on Friday, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich promised to work on raising the KSh 140,000 M-Pesa daily limits to cater for those who do not have bank accounts.

The bond will close on July 21 and the secondary trading will start thereafter on July 25TH. As a refresher, the bond pays at a rate of 10 per cent every six months, and it matures in 3 years. Those who missed out on the first offer and would want to join in on the second one can get to know all about M-Akiba on our comprehensive article.

Google showcases their latest machine learning experiments on the Magic in the Machine forum

0

Google held a “Magic in the Machine” artificial intelligence forum to talk about machine learning technology and showcase some of the experiments they have been working on. For those not familiar with this tech, machine learning in basic terms is where a computing system can be able to learn from you and then use that information to assist in tasks and generally make your life easier. It further enables your machines to offer you a personalized service that is based on your preferences.

Google has been researching on human brain and applying that knowledge on neuroscience which in turn makes it possible for computers to conducts tasks such as image recognition, language translation, speech recognition, natural language understanding and voice search engine. This tech has been applied on everyday apps such as Google Inbox which suggest quick replies to your email by using neural networks, Google Photos uses image recognition to recognize things such as hugs and pets in photos so you can search them more intuitively, and the Google app applies natural language processing to help you search for answers on the web using normal conversation language.

Quick Draw game, based on machine learning technology

Some of the experiments showcased in the event included Quick Draw which is a game that uses machine learning to know if you drew a given object in 20 seconds, AI Duet on the other hand is a system that lets you play a short tune using a piano and machine learning will convert it into a song and lastly Auto Draw, as the name suggest, the helps a user by automatically giving him or her a suggestion of what they could be drawing (like the way auto correct works), hence, they end up finishing their complete drawing much faster.

According to Blaise Aguera ,Principal Scientist who leads a team at Google focusing on Machine Intelligence for mobile devices, “In the 20th century mankind thrived upon inventing machinery to improve productivity that saw the invention and renaissance of industries. However, in the 21st century the economy is going to grow through smart technology and artificial intelligence. This is a golden opportunity for young inventors to make their mark in history.”

Tools are already available for researchers and developers to join in on Google’s open source machine learning project, Tensor Flow. Also, Cloud ML platform is already in place for interested individuals to create models that use this technology. Head up to those links and see if you could be part of the 21 Century economy growth catalysts as Blaise stated.

South Africa’s mbora.io looking to expand to Asia, raising seed funding to bring IoT to service providers

0

Founded by Adrian Raisbeck, South Africa’s mbora, is an IoT firm creating connected sales and distribution outlets with access to advanced performance management data to the over 500,000 booths in Africa and more in Asia. Raisbeck says mbora’s important markets largely reside outside of South Africa.

“We’ve rolled out one proof of value pilot project and have recently been awarded two more.  So it’s early days for us, our technology readiness levels are finally at a point where we can roll out pilots.” Raibeck told TechMoran. “We intend to secure our seed capital and another 3 pilot projects. We’re currently chatting to a small handful of interested seed investors, all of whom are impressive. We’ve also started looking to Asia, having recently been selected to join Matchi.biz’s Global Fintech Hackcelerator.”

Speaking to TechMoran, Raisbeck said Mbora’s value proposition resides in the data its IoT systems collect and the way it is disseminated to suit the needs of mbora’s customers.  Though it has been incredibly challenging, expensive, and long-winded to design and build an IoT system from scratch that can withstand the environmental conditions, mbora has not looked back.

mbora’s system includes add-ons that enable customers to generate additional revenue streams that help pay for the service.  So why wouldn’t MNOs, banks, micro-insurers, and mobile money operators want access to affordable actionable data to support efforts to optimise their existing sales and distribution networks and improve revenue?  Asks Raisbeck adding that the market signals the firm has received thus far have been very positive indeed.

“We’ve reached an exciting juncture as a first-mover solving challenging data-gaps in this market.  Our service is applicable to Asian businesses too,” he added.

The inspiration to start mbora came to  Raisbeck just over a year ago, when an old friend of his took over as the COO of a mobile money service provider in South Africa and invited him to look around his new setup. One of their fiberglass mobile money booths was standing in the corner of their offices.  Having had the business model explained to him reminded Raisbeck how important the low-cost sales & distribution infrastructure network was to local communities and to the businesses operating them. It also occurred to him that these booth-based networks operate very remotely and at ‘arms-length’ from their head offices in various African capitals. I started asking questions about the types of information and data they see from these booths.  This exposed huge data gaps for service providers that he felt mbora could address with its in-house technical capabilities, so he gave it a shot and mbora was born.

mbora’s business model is either a rental model based on a monthly fee per booth, or, some customers may prefer to pay the hardware capex upfront to attract lower monthly service fees.  mbora also offer additional add-ons that enable its customers to generate new revenue streams to offset the costs of its service.

“We value the experience and exposure tremendously and we’re primarily focused on becoming a recognised IoT player by the Seedstars community.  It’ll be a bonus if we win,” said Raisbeck. “I’d love to see Seedstars turning things upside down and initiating a competition specifically for young social entrepreneurs in marginalised communities in Africa, particularly for young women.  This is based on my belief that an alternative approach to sustainably developing marginalised African communities needs to be predicated on commercially viable partnerships between these communities and innovative ethical businesses.”

Raisbeck says the public sector and the development sector have done little over the last four decades to see increased GDP and increased overseas development aid trickle down to the last mile.  So based on his experience thus far he’s certain Seedstars World can play a crucial role  in the market.

Interested investors out there are welcome to contact him at adrian@mbora.io.

LG OLED and LG Super UHD TVs Rated As Top Performers by Leading Consumer Publication

0

LG TVs are known all over the world, the company has been producing great televisions that keep up with the technological advances.  Perhaps what keeps them so sort after is their step-above-the –rest kind of edge in display technology and designs coupled with a huge variety to suit every type of consumer out there.

It seems that their efforts have been noticed by a leading US consumer publication which named their LG Signature OLED TV as the highest rated TV. The publication praised the product’s picture quality, viewing angles and versatility. The picture in wall TV is has a curved panel, an attribute that only the latest and most advanced TVs hold. This series is joined by the blade slim B7 and E7 TVs, as well as the picture in glass E7 and G7.

WhatsApp will soon allow you to share any type of file format

0

WhatsApp has become a a household name all over the world. People have used the application for both work and play. However, the number of file formats supported in transfers was limited and generally held back the full potential of the service.

The team behind WhatsApp has decided it is time to  lift the barrier. Previously, you could only send popular file format such as PDF and Microsoft Office files. The good news is that soon you will be able to send all forms of files. Hopefully sending apps will be supported too. Unfortunately, no release date was given.

It is good to note that WhatsApp has a limit to what file size you can send. On Apple iOS the maximum file size is 128MB, 100MB on Android, and 64MB on WhatsApp Web.

Considering that Facebook is the parent company of WhatsApp, and their services don’t have such limitations, you would expect that they would extend the same usability to all their offerings. Anyway, true freedom might come to WhatsApp eventually, for now let’s wait for the update to go live.

TLcom Capital Raises $40 Million For New Africa Fund To Support Tech Startups In Sub-Saharan Africa

Fibre.ng Wants to Enable Lagosians Access Houses for Rent and Pay Monthly

0

When it comes to renting properties in Nigeria, the norm is to pay one or two years in advance to house owners before moving in. This exorbitant fee is usually difficult for many to raise, making it more stressful to find accommodation.

With Fibre.ng, you can now pay your house rent monthly.

Fibre is changing the norm by working with landlords across Lagos who list their properties on the platform in return for a guaranteed periodic rental income. These listed properties are then made available for tenants to live in and pay monthly.

According to the team, “no more lump sum of 2-year rent payments. With Fibre, you can pay for your home monthly as you earn. Moving homes should not be a hassle. Fibre members can move between Fibre locations as their housing needs change”.

With its unique feature, which allows users to pay monthly rent fee, Fibre creates a larger pool of suitable tenants for any property, who are then connected to verified house owners.

By partnering with house owners, Fibre promises to help them market their properties without an agency fee, manage whatever issues that arises with tenants gotten from the Fibre platform, and assures that all tenants go through a thorough verification process including background checks.

Although, Fibre.ng is similar to regular property listing platform, it comes with a really interesting twist which is new to the real estate industry, and would help to reduce accommodation problems in Lagos.

OneMedical Launches to Enable Hospitals Digitize Health Records

0

OneMedical is a system designed specifically for hospitals in Nigeria, to enable them digitize their medical processes and records for free.

According to the team, less than a decade ago, 9 out of 10 physicians in the United States relied on paper records, but today over 85% use an EHR system like ours. It’s time for Nigeria’s transition to a technology-driven healthcare system, that’s why we spent years building an innovative solution that is perfect for any hospital or clinic in Nigeria — regardless of size, resources or structure.

The platform thus claims to be accelerating Nigeria’s transition to an electronic/data-driven healthcare system.

Founded by a three-man team, Adegoke Olubusi, Nick Moore and Dimeji Sofowora, OneMedical provides a user friendly interface for medical professionals to quickly access and manage patient’s medical files, have instant access to patient records from any laptop, tablet or mobile device at anytime, and have their heavily-encrypted medical records are safely stored in the cloud or onsite.

Storing medical information on paper is a common practice in hospitals around the world. This sure comes with it’s own disadvantage. Many times, patients are kept waiting, while nurses/health attendants go in search of their health files from a pile of other health files. This under-development of healthcare information systems has made delivery of care extremely difficult, resulting in thousands of unnecessary mortalities annually. OneMedical is therefore solving a real problem, and with healtcare organisations embracing the platform, it would not only enhance development, but also makes their jobs a lot easier.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick Resigns

0

Following pressure from stakeholders, Travis Kalanick has stepped from his role as chief executive of Uber, the ride-hailing service which he cofounded in 2009, and turned into a $68 billion startup

According to the New York Times, Kalanick’s exit came under pressure after hours of drama involving Uber’s investors.

A report by the New York Times further revealed that five of Uber’s major investors, including one of Uber’s biggest shareholders, the venture capital firm Benchmark demanded that the chief executive resign immediately, on claims that the company needed a change in leadership. The investors made their demand for Mr. Kalanick to step down in a letter titled “Moving Uber Forward”.

In a statement, Kalanick said, “I love Uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life I have accepted the investors request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight.”

Commenting on the exit, Uber’s board said in a statement that Mr. Kalanick had “always put Uber first” and that his stepping down as chief executive would give the company “room to fully embrace this new chapter in Uber’s history.”

Kalanick would however remain on Uber’s board of directors.

Brighter Monday App Review: An in-depth look into the job hunting platform

0

Unemployment is a massive global challenge with over 70 percent of the youth unemployed and out of gainful unemployment in major markets across Africa, Kenya included.

Educated youth spend endless hours moving from one office and applying for millions of openings hoping to get a job and move out of poverty. Kenya’s Brighter Monday wants to solve this. The app is helping users search and apply for jobs at the comfort of their homes via its mobile and web apps. We wanted to find out the user process and if the online job hunting service provide a good enough solution to serve as an alternative to tarmacking?

Let’s find out in this in-depth review of their mobile app.

Interface

The color scheme of the application is red and white, those have been the official colors of Brighter Monday even after they changed their logo.  The red is not the screaming kind, it’s more of maroon, but forgive me if there is a better name for that shade, men aren’t color experts, you know.

Main page; featured job listings

The moment you get into the app, you are presented with the featured job listings. They are presented in small card like layouts which have the logo of the employer, the job title, name of the employer (company) and a snippet of the job description.

All the menus are placed on the slide out tab.  To reveal it, you have to start the slide from the very edge of the screen; otherwise you will end up tapping a job listing. Some applications like Twitter allow you to simply access the menu by simply sliding your finger without paying much attention to where the action was initiated.

The menu does not have a help section which is unfortunate, but then again getting your way around the application is so straightforward that omitting that section is forgivable. Due to the same reason, the app does not come with a tutorial.

There are some inconsistencies in the application user interface, for instance, the ‘contact us’ page takes you to the website instead. The website takes your contact details and lets you type in your query or call their help desk. It would have been better if Brighter Monday made a consistent native UI experience through-out the app.

Functionality

Brighter Monday is available in three countries, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Oddly, I clicked the Google Play store link on the Brighter Monday website and was directed to their app, however, I was not able to download it due to the warning ‘This item isn’t available in your country’ despite the fact that I was downloading the app from Kenya. It’s either something wrong with my location settings or a glitch that the company should look into. Luckily, I managed to get the app from other sources.

When you open the app for the first time, it dives you straight into the job listings. As I said in a previous review, this move is perfect for first time users who want have a test drive of the app before they sign up on it. You are only asked to sign in when you try to apply for a job or use other personalized options.

Speaking of applying, once you click a job post, you are taken to its description.  At the very top, you get a small but crucial breakdown of the job, it includes details such as where it is located, salary, if it’s full time or otherwise and finally the date it was listed. This information will help you decide if the job aligns with what you are looking for, if it does, you can go ahead and read its full description; this feature really saves your time.  Scrolling down the page brings the full description, responsibilities, qualifications, and what the employee is offered. Below it all is an apply button, when clicked, the user is taken to the employers website. It is good to note that the job descriptions can be shared with friends in case you get something that would interest them.

A profile helps employers to decide if the job seeker is well suited for a given position. The Brighter Monday app lets you have a very comprehensive profile. It covers everything from experience, education, associations, languages, skills and much more. It even has a completion percentage meter that lets you know how close you are to filling up all the sections.

In case you want to get a more focused list of jobs, you can filter the search results based on location, categories (accounting, healthcare, etc) and type of work (full time or otherwise).

Alternatively, you can get alerts for job that might suit you. These alerts are defined by the user based on location, category and work type.  Any job that aligns perfectly with your defined alert will be notified to the user. This is really neat feature that would save people the time of skimming through endless lists of search results. It is a form of job list uniquely tailored to you.

With all these features, it is easy to see how Brighter Monday is more effective at finding jobs than doing it the manual way. In fact, looking at some of its reviews on Google Play Store, some users praise it for successfully helping them find jobs from the comfort of their homes. The application has a 4.3 out of 5 star rating which is testimony of its flawless nature. So, if you are looking for a job, or simply want to help out a friend, Brighter Monday is the platform for you, go ahead and download their mobile app.

Pros

  • Straightforward and intuitive interface
  • Free of charge for job seekers
  • Available in all of East Africa; Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania
  • Job description has time saving features as well as in depth information for interested users
  • Alert feature informs you of a job that suits you even when you are not inside the app
  • Applying for a job is just a click away unlike in newspaper classifieds

Cons

  • User interface is not consistent in the contact page, directs you the website instead
  • No help section for those who might need it
  • Accessing the slide menu can be a hit or miss action.
