CEO Weekends: IFC, EU & MicroEnsure Insure Small-scale Farmers in Rwanda And Zambia

Farmers in Rwanda and Zambia will soon be protected from bad weather as IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, has signed two grant agreements with MicroEnsure Ltd, valued at about $650,000 combined, to increase the supply of index-based weather insurance to small-scale farmers in the two countries.

This should help curb the adverse effects of climate change and to strengthen food security.

The grants were issued by the Global Index Insurance Facility (GIIF), a multi-donor trust fund financed by the European Union, Japan and the Netherlands, and implemented by IFC and the World Bank.

“As a pioneer in the provision of weather index insurance to smallholders since 2004 we have seen the impact that these products have in unlocking credit to fund inputs, resulting in a dramatic increase in yields and rural income. Our on-going relationship with the team at IFC has been central to our growth in this sector,” Richard Leftley, CEO MicroEnsure and MicroEnsure Asia.

The land in Rwanda and Zambia experience extreme weather in some areas, this limits smallholder farmers as they are afraid to invest in crops as they may fail; this leads to reduced yields and continued food insecurity.

Traditional indemnity-based agricultural insurance has seen little success due to high transaction costs and premiums. Index-based insurance, which pays out benefits on the basis of weather data without costly field verification of losses, is a more efficient risk management tool. Supported by the GIIF grants, MicroEnsure is expected to offer index-based insurance to an additional 90,000 small-scale farmers in Rwanda within two years and 15,000 small-scale farmers in Zambia within one year.

Gilles Galludec, IFC GIIF program manager, said “There is great potential for index insurance to strengthen economic security for smallholder farmers in Rwanda and Zambia while also serving to further the development of sustainable insurance markets in both countries. A reduction in weather-related risks also stimulates investment in farming by making it viable for financial institutions and agribusinesses to extend credit to smallholder farmers for long-term investment in the land. Index-based insurance is a powerful tool in the fight against poverty.”

Headquartered in the UK, with a regional base in Nairobi and country operations across Africa and Asia, MicroEnsure works with mobile network operators, banks, microfinance institutions, and other aggregators to provide insurance for the mass market. MicroEnsure has been operating since.

Giant social network Facebook wants to become more like Twitter, in December 2012 the network changed the name of its ”Subscriber” button to ”Follow”, just as Twitter’s. Then in June 2013, it launched clickable Hashtags and like that wasn’t enough, the network has today introduceded Trending, similar to Twitter’s trending topics.

Announced by Chris Struhar, Facebook’s Engineering Manager, the Trending is designed to surface interesting and relevant conversations in order to help users discover the best content from all across Facebook.

DisplayMedia.ashxPlaced on the right of a user’s News Feed, the list of topics show the most popular topics based on a user’s interest.Twitter trends are usually on the left of a user’s account, and seems to be the only difference, for now, before we get access and review them.

“Each topic is accompanied by a headline that briefly explains why it is trending. You can click on any headline to see the most interesting posts from your friends or Pages that are talking about that particular topic,” Stuhar said.

Exclusive: Internet’s Evil One Revealed | Rocket Internet Acquires Competitors Domain Names Everywhere

1

Image:www.top.freewallpaper-s.net

Forget PesaTalk‘s Joel Macharia, who walked away (with a minority stake) from Kenya’s then web financial news startup which endedp up closing shop due to investor-CEO ‘differences’, Rocket Internet’s Jumia is reeking with stench.

This morning startups in Africa were awakened by shock when one of our very own realized that Rocket Internet, the parent company of Jumia, had allegedly bought and is sitting on it’s domain names across the continent. The Blitzkrieg is said to have registered 11 domain names related to Konga outside Nigeria, an evil move by any competitor ever seen.
If these allegations are true, this decision is aimed at stifling growth of Nigerian and African businesses in the sectors the Berlin-based business builder wants to dominate, especially online real estate, auto, job classifieds and online retail stores.
The domain names now under ownership of  Rocket Internet or its affiliates include;

konga.cm

konga.ly

konga.ma

konga.mu

konga.mw

konga.na

konga.sc

konga.sh

konga.co.ke

konga.co.za

Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal caught a clue about Rocket Internet’s activities in Nigeria and mentioned the exit of Jumia Nigeria’s two African CEOs(Tunde Kehinde and Raphael Afaedor) here.

Earlier, we realized that the Havard MBA founders had been let go off from the firm they co-founded. There are different ‘founders’ and directors now. Kehinde is working on a courier/delivery startup called Apost to be based in Nigeria but we doubt if he will stay, our sources reveal the founders have left the firm empty-handed, minus any equity and MTN Group just bought stolen companies in Africa and Middle-East from Rocket Internet just like that!
Though it’s OK for Rocket Internet to replicate internet successes from other markets in Africa and compete Cheki, BuyRentKenya, Private Property, BuyAm, Tranzit, CityChops and EazyAppetite with its Camido, Jovago, Kaymu, Vamido, EasyTaxi and HelloFood, the way the firms are being run are affecting the future of internet and mobile businesses in Africa.
Zimbabwe could be right, all the firms have to have 60% local ownership before they are registered; this helps keep jobs and profits back home. With our brothers out at Jumia, and Rocket Internet selling to another face, this is seriously hurting a local operation with the same business model including. These local companies WILL die if not supported. It is that simple.
TechMoran has send an email to Rocket Internet on these allegations, we shall publish more details in a bit, below are some of the domain names being squatted on Konga domains by rocket screenshots.

The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (also known as Truth in Domain Names Act), a United States federal law enacted in 1999, is part of A bill to amend the provisions of title 17, United States Code, and the Communications Act of 1934, relating to copyright licensing and carriage of broadcast signals by satellite (S. 1948). It makes people who register domain names that are either trademarks or individual’s names with the sole intent of selling the rights of the domain name to the trademark holder or individual for a profit liable to civil action. It was sponsored by Senator Trent Lott on November 17, 1999, and enacted on November 29 of the same year.

Unitel & Ericsson Demo Africa’s First LTE-Advanced Technology

0

Lte-AdvancedEricsson and Unitel, Angola’s top telco have demoed LTE Advanced (LTE-A) Carrier Aggregation technology with 1800MHz and 900MHz spectrum bands live in Luanda, Angola, carrying commercial traffic.

LTE-A is said to be the next step in the evolution of high-speed mobile broadband services, enabling operators to make the most of their existing spectrum assets by combining multiple spectrum bands to enable higher mobile broadband download speeds.

In a release statement, Amilcar Safeca, Deputy CEO of Unitel said, “With the global leap toward higher data access speeds for sophisticated video and mobility services, we are enhancing our network to ensure we continually provide high-quality services to our high-demanding subscriber base.”

Safeca said the demo promises the launch of the service in Angola soon. If it goes live this year, Unitel won’t be the first to launch the high speed spectrum bands, especially in Australia, Portugal and South Korea.

Why launch LTE-A in Africa? Over six African countries already have LTE, therefore move to LTE-A is the welcome.

Magnus Mchunguzi, Vice President, Ericsson sub-Saharan Africa says LTE-A technology will help operators increase their network capacity and enhance the mobile broadband user experience with speeds up to 1Gbps.

“This demo places Unitel on the very limited list of operators in the world to demonstrate LTE-A in a live network using a commercial terminal. We are very proud to have partnered with Unitel in this achievement, further extending our long-standing relationship with Unitel,” Mchunguzi said.

Don’t Underestimate the Value of Mentorship

0

Martina Laurie(1)Mentorship shouldn’t be underestimated.

The value of having access to someone to discuss issues with, to lean on for moral support or for well-timed advice based on their proven track record (particularly in business) cannot be overemphasised. Experts in the wellness industry believe that the role that this person plays in helping to shape existing and future entrepreneurs is without doubt one of the most significant in the market today.

Laurie made a decision some years ago to move from the world of chartered accountancy and auditing to successfully break into the wellness industry and establish a sustainable massage venture. Aside from a healthy dose of courage, to do this Laurie relied extensively on support and help from Ian Haggie, a business partner and one of her first clients of a previous auditing business.

Haggie became her coach and mentor, transferring knowledge and critical skills sets including structuring asset bases, business ethics and application.

“It was from Ian Haggie that I learned the benefit you gain from having a mentor. This person does not receive payment, it is usually someone who is retired, who is in a different time of his or her life, who is in a position to transfer skills to someone younger.  The big thing is to look at someone in your family or friends or client base and just ask them for “help”. You can have different mentors in business, self-development, assist you in your health but it is the big step, is to ask for someone to be your mentor you can find a lot of mentors in the church,” Laurie adds.

However, she continues to say that being a mentor is “a massive responsibility” and one has to be available and offer guidance where necessary.

“It takes a lot of patience and a genuine desire to help and empower people,” Laurie adds. “The return is a satisfaction that you have impacted positively on the life of someone who needed help. From a wellness and personal development point of view, this is most definitely a win-win scenario. From a business point of view, this type of direct and consistent support can only lead to bigger and better things … a definite way to open doors.”

Martina Laurie is the CEO of Hands On Treatment, an established Mobile Massage Company based in Johannesburg.  It provides on-site neck and shoulder chair massage service to the corporate sector, covering specialised labour-intensive areas such as call centres, events and exhibitions, amongst others.

Boston nonprofit Seeding Labs has received a $3 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to help support research in 100 universities in Africa and developing countries over the next three years.

Using donated equipment and resources from its corporate and academic partners in the United States, Seeding Labs will help equip science researchers and laboratories in Kenya, Cameroon and Uruguay among others. Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is among the beneficiaries.

JKUAT and others will receive laboratory equipment and supplies and the students and researchers will get training and networking opportunities  in a move expected to enhance science education in the developing world and support research projects with long-term development impact.

According to Dr. Nina Dudnik, Founder and CEO of Seeding Labs, “The size and strength of the scientific community in the developing world has been underestimated for too long. USAID’s visionary investment in Seeding Labs is a vote of confidence that our strategy for identifying under-represented scientists and supporting their efforts to tackle local challenges is a smart investment for the future of global development.”

The program will support talented individuals tackling their own communities’ problems and Seeding Labs helps ensure that the most appropriate solutions are found faster, fosters education and job creation and promotes a truly global scientific community.

“USAID is excited about this new partnership with Seeding Labs not only because of the innovative way the program seeks to redistribute resources to researchers in the global south, but also because of the innovations that will come out of the newly equipped labs.  Seeding Labs embodies USAID’s belief in the strength of science, technology, innovation and partnerships in inciting change,” added Dr. Alex Dehgan, Science and Technology Adviser to USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah.

The very first African Think Tank Studies are set to take place in Pretoria on the 3-5 Feburary which is brought to us cutesy of The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the University of Pennsylvania.

The Summit will be held under the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tank and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP), with the aim to provide a regional forum to engage and discuss challenging policy and organizational issues facing think tanks in Africa.

The summit’s main focus will be the policy level and institutional issues; they will tackle the national and regional policies, programs and strategies that address the current and emerging security threats for the continent and opportunities for Africa to become a major global trade and investment partner.  On the institutional issues, the summit will deal with the long-term sustainability of think tanks and the sharing of best practices for research and resource mobilization.

ACBF has vast experience in the establishment of think tanks in Africa, currently supporting 29 policy think tanks in 22 countries.  Central to this support has been the conviction that policy analysis and research are critical to economic management, thereby leading to improving public policy for growth, equity, employment and poverty reduction.

ACBF has achieved three main results, namely limited policy reversal on the continent, equipping governments with relevant skills for economic policy analysis and improving policy planning and monitoring for development frameworks such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It is hoped that the First African Think Tank Summit will establish learning alliances between African and global think tanks including the development of a ranking baseline which ACBF supported Think tanks can utilize to improve performance and maximize impact.

ibm

Master the Mainframe is here with us, thanks to IBM students have yet another chance to prove their capability. The company has unveiled the competition in Kenya to allow the Kenyan students to showcase their talent and explore future employment possibilities.

Through the contest, students learn everything from how to log onto mainframe environments to developing code and problem solving.

The master mainframe competition has no limitations as it is open to students from all Kenyan universities, has already attracted entries from students at local universities.

As a three-part contest which is taking place in a number of countries, Master the Mainframe serves as an introduction to programming and application development and students require no initial mainframe experience to participate.

“Mainframes have always been at the center of the global economy as well as the backbone of most cities infrastructures. Today, mainframes are growing in popularity as technology evolves, demanding more open, scalable and secure solutions and platforms for cloud, mobile and big data analytics,” said Felix Orondo, Team Leader for the Master the Mainframe initiative in Kenya.

The fact that 90 percent of the world’s data has been developed over the past few years will mean that advanced systems such as the mainframe continue to be critical tools of success for businesses, especially for those in growth markets such as Kenya.

Contestants in the Master the Mainframe competition will gain hands-on experience with a wide array of mainframe technologies, including REXX, Java and Linux on System among many others.

Students will be evaluated in each part of the competition and a reward will be given to any that proceeds to the next round which involves more challenges. The goal of the contest is to provide students with the mainframe skills necessary to find those unique and exciting jobs.

In 2013, IBM trained over 59,000 students worldwide on the mainframe.

Students who enter the competition also have the opportunity to identify job opportunities supporting mainframe environments. To help in this process, IBM has created Systemzjobs.com.

The job board is a resource to link IBM System z clients and partners with students and professionals seeking System z job opportunities and regularly features over 1,000 mainframe-related jobs.

The contest is open to students who are currently taking at least 3 school credits.

Safaricom Says Customer Data is Safe

0

bl19_cblnr_mobile_s_845096fIn a statement to the public, Kenya’s leading mobile operator has said no customer data has leaked as purported by a cross-section of Kenyans over the Deposit Protection Fund Board SMS texts, and the messages weren’t a hoax by fraudsters.

Safaricom said the SMS broadcast to subscribers from the Deposit Protection Fund Board, a body under the Central Bank of Kenya was sent by them as authorized by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK). Safaricom said the  authorized SMS Broadcast were sent to its entire subscriber base on behalf of DPFB which holds depositors’ funds with Kenya’s Daima Bank, Trust Bank and Fortune which are since defunct.

“DPFB sought to reach out to the depositors through an SMS broadcast as they do not have mobile records of these depositors so that they can access their funds,” said the firm in a statement. “The SMS Broadcast originates from Safaricom and therefore no customer data has been shared with any external party.”

DPFB reached out to depositors and creditors in good faith, as they only have one month to claim their money back, the refunds began last year February 25 and were said to only take one year for Daima Bank while those for Trust Bank and Fortune Finance will close  December this year.
The three firms are among the 17 that under liquidation and DPFB has been running adverts in print appealing for all those depositors who have never appeared for payments to come forward. Data from the board puts the number of institutions that are currently under liquidation at 17. The law demands that the Fund pays depositors Ksh 100,000 immediately an institution is put under liquidation. Bulk depositors over Ksh 100,000 are guaranteed the Ksh100,000 and dividends based on the sale of the institution.
The public outcry about a possible hack into Safaricom’s customer database are not just out of paranoia. US top retailer Target was recently hacked, leading to damage of over 110 million accounts leading to mounting pressure on U.S banks and merchants to secure credit- and debit-card data, and even forced to reissue cards.
Below is Safaricom’s full statement.

SAFARICOM ISSUES CLARIFICATION ON DPFB SMS BROADCAST

Nairobi 14th Jan 2014…Safaricom would like to issue a clarification with regards to the SMS broadcast to our subscribers from the Deposit Protection Fund Board, a body under the Central Bank of Kenya

  • The Deposit Protection Fund Board (DPFB) is holding depositors’ funds previously with three defunct financial institutions; Daima Bank, Trust Bank and Fortune.
  • DPFB sought to reach out to the depositors through an SMS broadcast as they do not have mobile records of these depositors so that they can access their funds.
  • The SMS Broadcast originates from Safaricom and therefore no customer data has been shared with any external party.

Generations actors go on strike

0

generations

So once again the stars of South Africa’s most beloved soap opera have downed scripts and are striking again . This comes less than a month after the acting CEO of SABC stepped in to end the last strike. While I have no problem with them exercising their democratic right to protest less than ideal working conditions I do have a few questions I need answered.

Firstly are Generations cast members allowed to strike? I know there are certain laws that prevent people who walk in essential services from striking and surely the cast members of such a revered show should be included. I think it would be a catastrophe if the golden half an hour from 8 to 8.30pm was occupied by anything else other than the award winning and endlessly thrilling drama that is Generations.

In the latest strike some actors revealed that they were afraid Mfundi Vundla would have the option of killing off their characters with no notice as and when he saw fit. Kiss me if I’m wrong but is this really something to lose sleep over? Soap characters die all the time. Then reappear as their own evil twins a few weeks later. Or pop up as themselves but with amnesia.

The last question I have comes from the following quote attributed to one of the actors:

“Our relationship with Generations has been like that of a woman who is stuck in an abusive relationship. Now we say ‘enough is enough’ – we must speak out against this abuse.”

I am not even sure where to start. Did they just compare themselves to RiRi with Mfundi being Chris Brown? If we are going to extrapolate this does this mean The Wild is the one that got away? Is Muvhango the plan B ? Do they secretly hope to be hired by Isidingo? The people want to know.

American Idol returns with changes

“American Idol” will be singing a different (and newer) tune when it returns this week.

Producers said Monday that the show’s new season will include changes to freshen it, including expanded song choices for contestants.

After tending toward a fair amount of golden oldies, the show’s song list will add more current tunes that the young contestants can relate to, executive producer Per Blankens said.

Former judge Randy Jackson’s new role will include leading a workshop that helps contestants deal with vocal and other challenges, executive producer Trish Kinane said.

Judges, from left, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr. are seen during the panel of "American Idol" at the FOX Winter 2014 TCA, on Jan. 13, 2014, at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.
Judges, from left, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr.

There will be a new element called “The Chamber,” where contestants go after host Ryan Seacrest tells them they’re about to perform for the judges during auditions. “It’s a very intimate moment,” Kinane said.

The talent contest also will introduce a “rush week” that precedes the Hollywood week auditions.

But Kinane told the Television Critics Association that the series is still essentially “American Idol.”

Fox’s program enters its 13th season with declining ratings and competition in the talent genre from NBC’s “The Voice.”

It’s the first season for the judging panel of Keith Urban, Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez, who told the critics’ group they have fun working together and want to emphasize the contestants, not themselves.

Urban ducked a question about his experience last season working with judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, who became known for their on-air sniping. Seacrest helped, joining Urban in pretending the question was about their relationship.

“Ryan and I worked it out,” Urban said.

“We’re fine,” Seacrest added.

“Idol” returns with a two-night season premiere Wednesday and Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
