Top 5 Breakthrough Performances Of 2013

0

One of the great pleasures of being a movie fan is the discovery of new performers. So here we go:

Paulina Garcia

5. Paulina Garcia – “Gloria”
The Chilean actress—best known for her theater work back home—plays a fifty-something divorcee, still glamorous, but deeply lonely after her children have left home, who immerses herself in the world of singles dances, and becomes drawn to an older man still tied up in his own family. Like a sort of South American Mike Leigh heroine, Gloria can be maddening in her self-deception and repetition of past mistakes. But you also love her from the first frame to the last (particularly after her glorious late-in-the-game revenge), with Garcia giving a performance of tremendous warmth and vivacity. Quite rightly, she won the Best Actress prize at Berlin in February, and if there was any justice, she’d be nominated alongside Bullock, Streep, Blanchett, et al. at the Oscars. Still, with Chile currently putting out some of the most exciting cinema around, we sincerely hope there’s more to come from Garcia soon.

Lupita Nyongo

4. Lupita Nyong’o – “12 Years a Slave”
We heard that one of the standout performances of the film came from someone called Lupita Nyong’o. And they were absolutely right, because now, the Kenyan raised actress, cast in the film soon after her graduation from Yale last year, is on her way to an Oscar nomination after a truly extraordinary performance. Nyong’o doesn’t really register in the film until almost halfway through, but once Patsey, the tortured slave so beloved by Michael Fassbender’s cruel slave master, arrives, she’s not quickly forgotten. Other characters get far more screen time, but every second of Patsey is truly wrenching, from that unforgettable whipping scene to her desperate plea to Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Solomon for him to kill her, rather than let her live any further in the world she can never escape. It’s a performance of fierce anger and compassion, and if Nyong’o can pull something like this off at her first time at bat, imagine what she can do a decade from now.

Barkhad Abdi

3. Barkhad Abdi – “Captain Phillips”
If necessity is the mother of invention then perhaps desperation is the bastard offspring of survival and necessity. In Paul Greengrass’ kinetic snapshot of the pirating of the Maersk Alabama cargo ship, Barkhad Abdi plays Muse, a Somali man forced to turn hijacker because of his dire economic circumstances. Starving literally and figuratively, Muse claws his way to the top of his dismal food chain, dispensing one of his rivals to become the pirate leader. However, we get the sense the Somali man isn’t violent by nature, but that his grim situation has transformed him into the zenith of desperation. Naturally, Abdi plays Muse like a wide-eyed starving rat; all raw nerves, skeletal psyche and false sniggering ego. But his puffed up, inflated self-worth, belies what’s underneath: a scared human being forced to suck up what wicked reserves he has inside to pull off this heist and feed himself and his family. What’s more Abdi goes toe to toe with Tom Hanks in what is one of his strongest performances to date. Not bad for an unknown first-time actor who has to somehow inject some sense of humanity into a character who would otherwise be seen as a one-note villain.

Brie Larson

2. Brie Larson – “Short Term 12”
Brie Larson’s been around a long time and she’s built up quite the roster of credits and respect in shows such as Showtime’s “United States of Tara” and in films like  “Greenberg,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” and “21 Jump Street.” But 2013 was the year of Brie, with impressive turns as Miles Teller’s ex in the Sundance hit “The Spectacular Now,” and as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s sister in his directorial debut “Don Jon.” But it wasn’t until SXSW when Larson got to show off her leading lady chops in that festival’s big winner “Short Term 12.” Often cast in the blonde mean girl roles, Larson is decidedly dressed down as Grace, a supervisor at a foster care facility who is dealing with her current life challenges as they collide with the ramifications of her troubled past. It’s a role that demands a lot of Larson, as she has to demonstrate all sides of Grace: her strength as well as her weakness, her deep mourning for herself and others, and her joy in the small victories; her fear and her fearlessness. It’s a deeply physical role that she inhabits fully, whether she’s biking out her anxiety, chasing down a wayward kid, or unleashing her rage on the windshield of a car.  It’s an incredible emotional and physical performance. She’s stunning in this role, proving her might, her vulnerability and just how darn watchable she is. She’s been here all along, but she’s proven she’s got talent to last.

Adèle Exarchopoulos

1. Adèle Exarchopoulos – “Blue is the Warmest Color”
Seemingly moments after “Blue is the Warmest Color” won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the discussion turned from the relative merits of the film to just about anything else—the prolonged lesbian sex scenes, the original comic book author’s displeasure with the adaptation, the endless infighting between various members of the creative team. Exarchopoulos’ performance borders on the miraculous; she’s able to portray a teenager consumed by a fiery love affair with a blue-haired girl (Léa Seydoux) and, somehow, an older version of that same girl, one who has loved and lost and matured greatly along the way. Part of that transformation is physical; in earlier parts of the movie she’s less a personality than an engine, eating and fucking and throwing herself around. In the later sequences she’s more measured, nuanced, and exacting, even her posture becomes more rigid. The sex sequences are feats of infinite bravery, as well, but Exarchopoulos is even sexier in one of the movie’s non-sex scenes, where she’s sprawled out, nude, a cigarette dangling precariously from her upturned mouth, her arty lover sketching her nearby. Exarchopoulos perfectly captures, in a beautifully rendered performance full of wit and grace, the sensation of falling in love with someone and knowing that, no matter how much you try and fight and wish it to be true, that you’ll never, ever, as long as you live get over that person.

Nigeria’s iROKOtv Receives $8 Million Series D For Africa Consolidation | Round Brings the Total raised to $21Mn

Njoku and Gotter

In a move that makes it among the continent’s most funded companies, Nigerian movie platform for Africa iROKOtv, has received $8 million series D funding led by existing investor Tiger Global, with further participation from Sweden-based Kinnevik and introducing new investor to this round, US-based Rise Capital.

This funding round brings iROKO’s total money raised to $21Mn, and will be used to build and transition the company’s audience from a primarily Diaspora base to an African base, as well as migrating from a largely ad supported model to more subscription service. iROKOtv’s 50% audience is located in the UK and US alone, this is OK but as Africa moves online, there’s a gap for homegrown multi-platform video content. iROKOtv will use this funding to focus on its African audience, monetize its catalogue through its SVOD service, iROKOtv PLUS, as well as through its strategic distribution partnerships with global airlines and TV channels. The firm will also use the cash to grow traffic, curate more content and build a platform-agnostic distribution system for its 1Mn monthly users.

According to Jason Njoku, CEO and co-founder, “The $8Mn raised by Tiger Global, Kinnevik and Rise Capital will further fuel our expansion and help us to realise our long term goal of becoming one of Africa’s preeminent media companies. We started life three years ago as a Nollywood content aggregator on a YouTube channel and today we find ourselves with a VC-backed dedicated VOD platform, watched in 178 countries around the world, with one million unique visitors a month. These metrics were achieved with hard work from a great international team and today’s news allows us to continue in the same vein and accelerate our growth.”

iROKOtv has been raising money, and if you are wondering, they have been using that cash to acquire content, expand the London-based tech team, develop mobile websites and applications and open offices in London, New York and Johannesburg, alongside the company’s Lagos headquarters. This money has made it the owner of the world’s largest online catalogue of African content, with over 5,000 movies.

US-based Rise capital will join the firm as the new investor while its its managing partner Nazir Yasin will become an active member on iROKOtv’s board. Yasin is not new to iROKOtv as he previously worked with Tiger Global. The funding is a faith in Africa’s growing media businesses according to Mia Brunell Livfors, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kinnevik.

With a $5 month subscription service dubbed iROKOtv PLUS, business is not so bad as the firm says its their largest single source of revenue, beating advertising,  but with over 95% of their content accessed freely, the ‘Netflix of Africa’ will use the firms to firmly grip the continent’s movie programming as several players start to launch.

Bastian Gotter, COO and co-founder confirms, “ This additional capital allows us to consolidate our position as VOD market leaders for Africa, invest in tech, content and infrastructure and, importantly, we are now in a position to become profitable by 2015, which is an extraordinary feat for any start-up, let alone an African VOD one like ours.”

The Family, It’s brutally funny

0

A mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of Agent Stansfield to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni, his wife Maggie and their children Belle and Warren can’t help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the “family” way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down. Chaos ensues as old scores are settled in the unlikeliest of settings.

The family dad

The family’s love for each other is unconditional and treats challenges with a baseball bat rather than diplomacy. If a Frenchman disrespects Americans, he might find his supermarket in flames. Its throwaway stuff packed with corny gags about rich French cooking and annoying Gallic manners, in which light relief is offered by the sight of our hero torturing a plumber. Eventually De Niro winds up at the local film society watching Goodfellas – presumably leaving him wondering (as do we) what the hell happened.

the family daughter

If this sounds like a story to turn the nuns’ heads completely around, don’t worry; it’s an ultra “black comedy,” equal parts Italian-American gangster satire and laughable domestic shenanigans. It’s pretty much territory owned by Scorsese and De Niro. Additionally, the use of the “f” word has never been so cleverly played in a comedy. After a few times of “things” happening they came to be expected. But I still couldn’t help laughing. And really the only time I didn’t laugh was because the script decided to have a couple serious moments.

Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t just stupid laughs. There is a plot, there is acting; there is everything that makes a great comical movie. Some people really hate this movie, but I say if you love humor, this is for you. Comparable movies are Law Abiding Citizen and Donnie Brasco without the corny comedy, 6.3 stars for The family.

The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has today reviewed downwards tariffs for digital signal distribution; this move is aimed at facilitating a smooth migration from analogue to digital television broadcasting in the country.

According to Determination No. 1 of 2013 on Cost-Based Terrestrial Digital Broadcast Signal Distribution Tariff issued today, Digital Signal Distributors shall charge broadcasters at Ksh. 125,990 per MB for Nairobi and Ksh.93,202.75 per MB for other sites in Kenya. This new tariffs will take effect from today.
Before the review, the Pan-Africa Network Group (PANG) had proposed to charge broadcasters a monthly signal distribution fee of Ksh. 1,135,312.50 per channel in Nairobi. Kenya Broadcasting Corporation-owned SIGNET on the other hand had proposed to charge Ksh. 248,141 per MB for signal distribution services within Nairobi.

For other sites in Kenya, SIGNET had proposed to charge a uniform signal distribution fee of Ksh. 248,141.45 per MB, while PANG had proposed to charge a flat monthly fee of Ksh.378,437.50 for signal distribution services in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret, Kakamega, Kisii and Meru.  For Malindi, Webuye, Garissa, Narok, Kericho, Isiolo, Kitale, Bungoma, Embu, Voi and other regions, PANG had proposed to charge broadcasters a flat monthly fee of Ksh.126,145.83 to distribute their digital signals.

The Regulator further requires the two Digital Signal Distributors – Pan African Network Group (PANG) and Signet, to publish a Reference Offer three months from today in order to ensure that there is access, transparency and non-discrimination on the terrestrial signal distribution platform.

According to the determination, digital signal distributors are also expected to prepare separate accounts for each commercial subsidiary including the appropriate allocation of central overheads within six months from today.

In arriving at the afore-cited tariffs, CCK adopted a consultative approach where the signal distributors were involved.

Text Sharing Apps Violates Mobile Operator’s Terms & Conditions

0

 Android

The android text-sharing apps have proven popular due to their ability to send unlimited numbers of text messages, as well as reward phone owners for each text they relay.

This has however raised complaints from mobile operators who claim violation of their terms and conditions since routing text messages through a phone makes it cheap to deliver text message to its destination including across boundaries worldwide.

The sheer number of text messages passing through phones could cause phone owners problems as well since the operators have the capability to block the number.

“There is a huge market in sending text messages as cheaply as possible around the world; you cannot resell your message plan operators have terms and conditions for a reason.” said Cahal McDavid from mobile security firm Adaptive Mobile.

Bazuc one of the message- relaying Android apps spokesman said it told participants to ensure that the daily limit of messages they send is not set too high. “We are fully aware that mobile operators are not going to be a big fan of this app, we’re simply trying to help people out there make some extra money.”

Mobile owners receive $0.001 for every text relayed therefore a customer using multiple phones uses the app to cash in. The act is breach of terms of the mobile operators contract which could easily lead to service suspension.

It is important to understand that the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) Reproductive Child Health Services (RCHS) section is the overall leader of the service. The Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service was launched in November 2012 with the Wazazi Nipendeni (Parents Love Me) Safe Motherhood multi-media campaign and funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and US Presidents Malaria Initiative, through the United States Agency for International Development.

Also using radio, TV, billboards and posters to promote the free short-code (15001) and the registration keyword ‘mtoto‘(‘baby‘), the campaign directs the public to register and receive the information for free.

Now with over 300,000 subscribers on the platform, the Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Baby Text Messaging Service is free to use with subsidies paid by the US Government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With a two-year partnership with Airtel Tanzania, the SMS service reaches a large number of registrants who access it for free.

MTN Switches Its Invoice Services To Token Billing

0

MTN

MTN customers are now set on having a better and easier time paying for they will use as the telecommunication company has introduced token-based billing (TBB) in order to arrest all the issues that are coming along with the traditional method.

Customers have for a long time complained of being unconsciously billed for content services they have not subscribed for by unscrupulous Wireless Application Service Providers (WASPS).

WASPs  was using event-based billing (EBB) to bill MTN customers for purchases or subscription services without them knowing. It happened mostly when customers unknowingly clicked on a link or URL which automatically triggered an unsolicited subscription.

“This will shelter our customers from unscrupulous service providers who ruin the experience of our unsuspecting customers. We are confident that this service will help to clamp down on this malpractice and will give our valued customers the peace of mind of knowing that the integrity of their accounts is safeguarded,” says Kanagaratnam Lambotharan, chief enterprise business officer of MTN South Africa.

For activation or deactivation of any WASP subscriptions, MTN advices customers to dial*141*5#.

“We are giving our customers the freedom to manage their subscriptions without the need to call MTN Customer Services or the WASP providers directly to unsubscribe,” adds Lambotharan.

The new TBB system has additional controls and checks in order to protect customers and systems from abuse. This system will generate a token for customers to opt-in and approve their purchase or subscription to any WASP service before a customer will be billed.

Before approving a purchase or subscription, MTN users will now have access to the name of the WASP providing the service, the service or product being purchased, the frequency of the service, the amount to be charged per frequency once agreeing to purchase or subscribe and a disclaimer and/or Terms and Conditions, being agreed to in terms of authorizing the purchase or subscription.

Why PRO Photographers Will Love The Nokia Lumia 1020

0

lumia1020

The launch of the Pureview 808 and its stunning camera meant the need to carry a compact camera as well as a phone had just about disappeared. (One less thing to pack for your holiday). Well, with the launch of the Lumia 1020, that death certificate has finally been signed.

And it’s not just the point and shoot brigade that will love the 1020; with it’s huge amount of manual control, everyone will find a reason to stick one of these on their Christmas list.

Predictability

As a photographer, one thing I need from a camera is predictability. Much of what a photographer does is getting into the right place at the right time. Sometimes this is without doubt helped by a lavish dollop of luck, but as ones career/hobby goes along one usually finds oneself in the right place more and more. The reason is obvious; the more you practice, the more you see situations unfold before they actually happen. So as a photographer you’re increasing there, ready and waiting, to get the shot.

In the Real World….

Once you’re there though, you’re depending on your camera to do what it’s told. The problem with a lot of cameras is that they want to do so much automatically. This meant that from one shot to the next, (perhaps just seconds apart), the camera will re-adjust its aperture and the exposure and often even the white balance and ISO too. The result of these changes is totally different pictures. So although you got yourself in the right place, your camera could rapidly mess up all your hard work.

Shutter Control

The most common thing for a camera to change is the shutter speed. You might be photographing a moving subject against a constantly changing background or perhaps an area of dark shadow and bright sun; the automatic settings on most compacts and even DSLRs would try to find a middle ground to give the best average values. The result? A decidedly average (read boring) photograph. However, once you are in control of the functions, and capable of stopping the camera from changing its readings, you are capable of getting exceptional photographs.

What’s So Special …?

Until now all camera phones have suffered the same problem as most compact cameras; massive unpredictability. But let me say that again; until now…

The Nokia Pureview 808 had capabilities that could help to over-ride the cameras automatic settings in the form of exposure compensation. This is a great tool and one that reduces missed shots whilst improving the average auto setting the camera is trying to make. For your average holiday snap, the Pureview 808 still negates the need to carry a compact camera as well.

But Nokia have now leapt further forward – and it is a leap to be reckoned with, because this extra amount of control means that this phone will not only satisfy holiday snappers, but those with a more serious involvement in photography. The Lumia 1020 has shutter control, just like a fully manual camera. This means you can set the shutter speed and the ISO manually which means you know what the shot will look like. Time and time again. This is an enormous help with moving subjects, street photography, studio shots and for making dramatic chiaroscuro effects. For the first time, you are genuinely in total control.

MTN Gets In Bed with Rocket Internet and Millicom to Take Over Africa

0

MTN, Rocket Internet and MillicomSo I am reading this article on MTN, Millicom and Rocket Internet’s 1:1:1 partnership, and the realities of the things being hidden under corporate lingua are enormous. First time I am seeing an actual Oliver Samwer quote in a Rocket Internet African story. The title says—“ MTN Group Courts Millicon & Rocket Internet to Build Africa’ E-Commerce”. The title playing in my head is “Rocket Internet, MTN,and Millicom finalize Plans to take over Africa”
What are the Implications of this partnership?

Is MTN taking over Rocket Internet’s stake?

From the article, the answer is NO, instead all three companies will be assuming a 33.3 percent stake. “MTN has partnered with Rocket Internet and Millicom International Cellular to develop internet businesses in Africa through Africa Internet Holding (AIH), an exclusive vehicle to develop e-commerce businesses across the continent. MTN, Millicom and Rocket Internet will each become 33.3% shareholders in AIH”

There have been some whispers about the MTN talk but the extent of how it would change everything were not then entirely clear. Now they are clearer.

Millicom and Rocket Internet signed an agreement in August 2012 and the implications were an exit of Rocket Internet from the African ecommerce space giving its stake to Millicom and we have already started seeing the realities of this move with Lukas Zel’s exit from Kaymu, Tunde Kehinde’s recent resignation, and Raphael Afaedor’s soon exit(rumours) from Jumia Nigeria and silent exit of other key players in its other ventures across Africa.

True Colours

MTN- Nigeria. South Africa and more

MTN has 203.8 million subscribers across its operations in 22 countries in Africa and the Middle East.
A company known for the ruthlessness of its marketing campaigns, large war chest and not so amazing service delivery(according to Nigerian consumers).

mtn

South Africa and Nigeria which are Africa’s biggest economies are the two key market’s MTN currently has its biggest footprint in Africa.

The recent introduction of mobile number portability in Nigeria saw MTN lose a good number of its subscribers to other platforms like Etisalat but the figures released by the NCC shows that it still maintains the largest user base in Nigeria
Millicom- Rwanda, Tanzania and more

Millicom has its digital footprints in Latin America and Africa with about 49 million customers. They operate in 15 countries and the strength of Millicom’s offering lies in the way they have creatively used mobile technology in emerging markets.
Rocket Internet

Rocket Internet is a leading Internet incubator globally. They are known for cloning different versions of existing businesses around the world, with clones for Amazon, eBay and Zappos. They are known for expanding aggressively sometimes closing whole companies in days

Mtn, Rocket Internet and Milllicom again

What can they do together? Is AIH building a monopoly

Right now, AIH is active in 13 African countries with a hand in a broad spectrum of industries from real estate classifieds to electronics marketplace, food delivery to fashion e-commerce and hotel booking to taxis ordering.

Looking at Nigeria for instance AIH owns;

Jumia: Main competitors/other players- Konga.com
Hellofood: Local Players- Easyappetite, Naijaeats,
Kaymu: Local Players- dealdey.com
Lamudi: Local Players- Tolet, PrivateProperty
Carmido: Local Players Cheki, Kiramu
Easy Taxi: Local Players Tranzit
Jovago: Hotel.ng, Nitestay

Should the local startups just towel in the towel already?

As an entrepreneur watching the events unfold, the implications of what AIH can do in Africa are scary. MTN plus Millicom Plus Rocket almost equals certified domination

Nigeria has so far proven a tough market for Rocket to crack. With every startup venture, they have been met with tough opposition from Nigerian entrepreneurs. In ecommerce for instance, general trends have shown that Konga in Retail and Hotels.ng in Hotel booking, Tolet and other players have not been that easy to run over. This companies also have significant investment and with the the entrepreneurs understanding of the local terrain

The word to local startups is RUN, If you have been sleeping, WAKE UP! If you want to sell, prepare to cash in. Don’t look back, take advantage of any strategic partnerships you can get, there is still sufficient funding/partnership muscle available that you can leverage on, take advantage of it.

Know More About Rwanda On Rwandapedia

0

rwanda

It now easier to understand where the land of a thousand hills started from as the country has launched the Rwandapedia; Through this platform anyone can access cultural and historical information.

The portal was launched, with the help of the African Development Bank(AfDB), at the recent Transform Africa Summit’s Cultural Gala.

The online archive is a free, openly accessible platform on Rwanda’s post genocide development including Home Grown Solutions, sustainable development programs derived from the ways Rwandans historically dealt with various challenges, modernized to fit the 21 century context.

Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo, said the documents, statistics, videos, photos and audio would be useful to students, journalists and anyone who wanted accurate information about Rwanda’s post genocide journey.

“It is a means by which Rwandans can share the story of ourselves, our country, and especially our reconstruction journey, our development. It is done in a very transparent way, a credible way and it is accessible to all. It solves the problem of inconsistent and patchy record keeping during the post-genocide critical development period,” she said.

Negatu Makonnen, AfDB’s Resident Representative in Rwanda, said: “This project has been great for two reasons. The first is that it shows how working with this government is made easy by the leadership and how they get things done. The second is that it gives access to accurate primary information that enables Rwanda to tell its story. The Bank is proud to support this project and we hope it can be replicated throughout the continent.”

Pacific Rim pays tribute to modern cinematic technology

pacific rim 2

As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures’ wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

The film takes place in the not-too-distant future, after an army of monstrous creatures known only as the Kaiju have risen from a dimensional rift deep in the Pacific Ocean, with the apparent intent of taking over Earth and destroying everything in their path. Humans, in turn, create giant robots called Jaegers, capable of battling (and occasionally even beating) the Kaiju in claw-to-mechanical-hand combat. The robots are roughly human-shaped, but as tall as a skyscraper and able to run, jump, fight and travel through water and upper Earth orbit.

Pacific rim Jaeger

Let’s talk about the giant fighting robots, because building such is a lot more complicated and costly than it sounds. Bigger isn’t necessarily better as I found out from my research. The bigger something is (whether an animal or robot) the weaker it becomes proportional to its body weight. This is because when you increase an object’s size, what you’re actually doing is increasing its length, width and height. Therefore the weight increases by a power of 3 and the energy required to perform increases by a power of 4. You failed in Maths? I hope not.

pacific rim kaiju

Back to the movie, the Jaegers (directly controlled by human minds) have two pilots acting in perfect synchronization in order to control the movements of the enormous machine. The reason that two pilots are needed is on the neural link between human and computer – known as ‘The Drift’ – which burrows into each pilot’s entire consciousness and memories in order to make them the most efficient fighter possible. The strain of such a link proves to be too great for a single human to survive it, but the Drift succeeds when bolstered by the presence of two human minds working simultaneously.

Pacific Rim will have its own fans. It feels like a self-indulged blockbuster that people will end up loving. Besides, this film is said to be Guillermo Del Toro’s (director) dream come true coming from his childhood. And seeing all that, there are plenty of things to explore and to be intrigued about. If only the plot can break some points from the mainstream storytelling, it would have been less predictable and much extraordinary. But physically, it is extraordinary. Comparable movies would be – Cloud Atlas, Godzilla and After Earth – and I give Pacific Rim 7.2 stars.

Appsfire Switches To Mobile Advertising

0

appsfire

For the last four years, Appsfire, has worked as an apps promoter now it has changes gears and is now looking to venture into the mobile advertising sector.

So far, the company has managed to reach 12 million different users and makes an extraordinary growth of 8-10,000 users daily.

Well, despite all this success Appsfire wants to take a different turn saying that the future for them is no longer in Apps but in the growing, or hype-lead, native advertising model — which used to be more commonly known as advertorials.

The company is therefore no longer offering its existing service to new customers, although it will support existing users. It is also stopping development of the Appsfire service.

It’s a big leap for any company to shift focus, and the company is itself not sure as it says in its own statement that it might bring the Appsfire app back at a later date.

The company also hinted that Apple have made it harder for small companies to flourish in Apple’s App Store. Appsfire also alleged that Google did not look as if they were doing much to make its app store easier to use either, reserving rare praise for the Amazon app store.

White Space — The Solution for Africa’s Internet Access Crisis?

0

Broadband_pipeBy Kate Voss

In the age of widespread internet, where free Wi-Fi is available anywhere from coffee shops to libraries, Africa is undoubtedly lacking in regards to affordable and widespread access to the internet. In 2011, a UN commission stated that access to broadband internet is a basic human right, but Africa still stands as the world’s last major untapped market for internet.  According to Internet World Stats, the current internet penetration in North America is at a 78.6 percent, Europe at 63.2 percent and Africa at 15.6 percent.

White space broadband — a technology that makes use of the unused channels between TV broadcast signals left open to protect interference between multiple networks — might just be the solution Africa needs to solve its internet access crisis. Wireless broadband internet is able to utilize these “white spaces” in order to transmit data and provide remote regions, where traditional cable is expensive and hard to lay, providing anyone with the opportunity to access high speed internet.

A white space device (WSD) is designed to detect the unused areas of airwaves and utilize them to transmit signals for Internet connectivity. Due to the low frequency of the adapted white space radio waves, signals can travel up to a 10-kilometer radius, enabling them to reach remote areas. White space is not only cheap to provide, since it operates on an already existing structure, it also penetrates walls and has the ability to bend around physical obstructions (like trees, or better yet, mountains) far better than mobile signals can. These low-frequency signals are the reason that single, large TV transmitters can broadcast a signal to millions of residential homes, versus cell phone signals or cellular radio, which need towers every few miles.

Already, there have been various proposals, such as IEEE 802.11af that advocate using white spaces to provide and improve the availability of wireless broadband Internet access, and are working to define standards for future spectrum sharing. Powerhouse companies Google and Microsoft, who have been long-term supporters of white space usage, have already started trials in Kenya, Cape Town and Tanzania in hopes of lessening the digital divide and creating new opportunities for education, healthcare, commerce, and government services in Africa and other underdeveloped countries.

Africa currently heavily relies on mobile phones to access the internet, but only the wealthy can afford such devices, and mobile phone companies are hesitant to build expensive networks in remote areas. Satellite internet was once the only option for connecting rural communities, but now, if white space technology proves effective, African countries could have access to affordable broadband access that requires less set-up, runs faster, and costs less.

Google is already claiming that their white space trial, which began in March and implemented white space Wi-Fi in ten schools in Cape Town, has had positive results. The company announced that, “After six months, the trial has been a success. The participating schools, which previously had slow or unreliable Internet connections, experienced high-speed broadband access for the first time. Teachers were able to use videos in their lesson plans, make Skype calls to other schools, update school websites, and send regular email updates to parents. Students could use educational videos for research. Because the service was better and faster, teachers and learners used the Web to enrich the classroom experience.”

In addition to the Google white space trials in Cape Town, Microsoft launched a white space pilot in rural Limpopo. Microsoft hopes to prove that white space technology can be used to meet the South African government’s goal of providing low-cost internet access to 80 percent of South Africans by 2020. The company worked with the University of Limpopo as the hub for a white space network that would provide internet access to nearby schools in local communities, and also provided each school with Windows tablets, projectors, laptops and solar-panel chargers.

Microsoft previously worked with Tanzania and Kenya, and those trials proved that white space technology is an excellent solution for internet access in rural areas. As of today, the Kenyan government reportedly is delivering bandwidth speeds up to 16mbit/s to communities which previously lacked internet access and electricity. Likewise, in Google’s South African white space trial, the goal was to ensure that white space would not interfere with broadcast channels and that, too, was also successful.

World Bank research shows that a 10 percent increase in broadband penetration can result in an extra 1.4 percentage points of annual economic growth, but there are further benefits if Google and Microsoft’s tests prove successful. As the companies are working to perfect white space technology, there’s no doubt that any amount of increased internet access will help improve education by providing more resources and learning opportunities, strengthen the government by allowing for more interaction, and give Africans their basic human right — access to the internet.

UGANDA’S NEW TELECOM TO BEAT “TOP DOGS”.
