Google announces $1m grant funding for women entrepreneurs.

As part of a series of new initiatives aimed at supporting women-owned businesses, Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, has committed $1 million in charitable funding to support programs that help women entrepreneurs build their enterprises.

“Research shows that 58% of small and medium-sized business (SMB) entrepreneurs in Africa are women,” says Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, Head Brand and Reputation, Africa – Google. “Despite this, women-run businesses show, on average, 34% lower profits than those run by their male counterparts. They are also less likely to receive funding and investment. This is why we are announcing a series of initiatives today, aimed at providing the support women need to grow their businesses.”

In addition to the funding announcement, Google has also announced #LookMeUp, a campaign to showcase women entrepreneurs and tell their stories. These stories feature women like Vivian Nwakah in Nigeria, who launched Medsaf, a pharma supply chain solution to help Nigerians get access to quality pharmaceutical health care services, Mary Mwange, CEO and founder of Data Integrated who is driving innovation in the mobile payments sector in Nairobi, Kenya, and Mosa Mkhize in South Africa, who launched Origins Publishers to provide her children – and others like them – with books in their home languages.

“Google is also providing free tools to support women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and has launched an intensive program to drive the discovery of women-owned businesses through Google Business Profiles,” Makinde says. 

These tools include Google Business Profile, which helps businesses create a free webpage to make them easier to find online, and Primer, an app-based skills-building platform,  which allows business owners to access a series of free, custom designed, bite-sized lessons on the go. 

To help women business owners to develop their skills, Google has also dedicated the March cohort of the Hustle Academy to women-owned SMBs. The Hustle Academy, launched last month, is a free, week-long bootcamp designed to help SMBs build the expertise they need to expand their businesses.

African Tech Vision, a non-profit that supports early-stage female tech founders, has announced the addition of 26 startups to its second mentorship program.

After a rigorous interview process, the entrepreneurs were selected to participate in a 10-week online mentorship program that will begin on March 7, 2022. 

The program is for early-stage founders who want to learn from, share with, and grow with other like-minded entrepreneurs and domain experts in the global and local tech startup scene.

The 26 startups come from 11 different countries across Africa. Some of them started their businesses out of a desire to make a positive impact in their communities, while others are focused on reducing inefficiencies in their sectors.

From a Nigerian edutech startup that offers digital rentals to a Zambian company that provides loans to women entrepreneurs to a vibrant Cameroonian edutech startup that teaches females digital skills. All of the businesses have one thing in common: they all use technology to scale their businesses and were founded by a strong female founder.

The selected startups are Agrodemy, CodeLn, My Food Angels, MyChassis, Owoafora, Quidroo, Reflect Robotics, Rent Small Media (Nigeria), Byte the Bits, Studentshubhg (Ghana), Data Girl Techologies (Cameroon), ClinicPesa, Waape (Uganda), Cash Tank (Zambia), Lago Medical Supplies (Namibia), Urban Unbutu, SeromedTech (South Africa), Chaqula Ltd, Chiswara, Class Measures Ltd, Fleetsimplify, Ustawi Africa (Kenya), Tanzania Health and Medical Foundation (Tanzania), SpurtX! (US) and Go Smart Value (Botswana).

In the last programme, some of the content modules made available to the founders included workshops on topics such as ‘Engaging with Mentors’, ‘Elevator Pitch‘, ‘Investors 101‘, ‘Product Market Fit’, and ‘Sales Fundamentals‘, this time round, more emphasis will be placed on learning from other founders, specifically from the Alumni and specialized workshop on topics related to scaling a business in African markets.

Kenyan startup Money254 Wins MIT FinTech Startup Competition.

Money254, a Kenyan startup, has been named the grand prize winner of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) FinTech Conference’s 2022 FinTech Startup Pitch Competition.

Money254 is Kenya’s first financial services comparison platform, allowing consumers to easily find, compare, and now apply for financial products that meet their needs and eligibility.

By combining independent financial product research with partnerships across leading institutions, Money254 users are able to search and apply for financial products such as personal loans, business loans, and savings accounts from a variety of leading banks, microfinance institutions, and digital apps – all from the comfort of their homes.  

The company was created in response to the incredible challenge of navigating financial product choice for Kenya’s 25 million financially included adults and 7.5 million business owners. 

Finding accurate product information, as an individual, can be a challenging and time-consuming process especially if you have to walk into each institution’s physical branch or download different apps to find it.

“At Money254 we’re building a central place for Kenyans to learn about, manage and move their money between the financial institutions and products that make the most sense for them. We’re deeply humbled to receive this honour and excited for what the future holds for the company.”

Other finalists were Zumma, a Mexico-based community-focused digital wealth management platform; MiKashBoks, a Brooklyn-based peer-to-peer saving and lending platform; OpDeFi, a platform to invest in decentralised finance; CashEx, a digital banking platform for African immigrants; Finch, a New York-based current account balance investing platform; Bitadx, a cryptocurrency trading platform and Slyde, a US-based payment platform. 

The MIT FinTech Conference, one of the world’s largest student-led conferences, brings together over 1,000 participants from over 60 countries to explore innovation and disruption in financial technology. 

This 8th edition featured world-renowned academics and professionals such as Paulo Passoni, a Managing Investment Partner of SoftBank’s $5Bn LatAm Fund; Snejina Zacharia, founder and CEO of Insurify, David Green, the CEO of Earnest, United States largest refinancer of student loans and Neha Narula, the Director of the Digital Currency Initiative at MIT among others.

Huawei partnered with Seres to produce the Aito (Added Intelligence to Auto) with their first product being the M5, a mid sized SUV powered by Harmony OS. The OS was built as a replacement for Google’s Android after the company had a fallout with US companies under the Trump Administration. The car was unveiled back in December 2021 but has now started shipping in China.

Inspired by the Seres SF5 EV, the Aito M5 distinguishes itself with a redesigned front bumper with a large intake. It has stunning taillights and window line close to those of the Porsche Macan.

Inside the cabin is a 15.6 touchscreen powered by the Harmony OS infotainment. Huawei also provides the 1,000 watts 19-speaker sound system and the driver gets private speakers integrated into the headrest. In addition, Huawei’s Level 2+ advanced driver assisted system (ADAS) is on-board despite the fact that the company already has Level 3 ADAS ready.

Aito M5 comes in three different power outputs with 272 hp, 428 hp or 496 hp . The entry-level being a rear wheel drive with a single electric motor, while the other two are all wheel drive with dual electric motor. The fastest version can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.4 seconds.

Interestingly, all models have a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 123 hp that works as a range extender. Normally, the M5 drives on the 40 kWh battery that can be plugged in a charging station to give a modest range of 150km or 95 miles, but with the gasoline engine running on a full tank, the combined range is over 1,100 kilometers (684 miles). This partnership of both engines effectively eliminates range anxiety and would be suitable for countries which don’t have extensive charging stations network. Most people would comfortably do their daily commute on the battery alone and on long distance travelling, the extender would come into play. The solution is praised for having less emissions than cars that run on gasoline engines alone.

The standard 272 hp rear wheel drive version goes for CNY 249,800 ($39,500), the other two all wheel versions go for CNY 279,800 ($44,200) for the 428 hp and the flagship alteration 496 hp asks for CNY 319,800 ($50,500). These prices are after government subsidies have been considered.

Nissan has taken the wraps off its latest electric SUV, the Qashqai E-Power. It is the first vehicle from the brand to get their new electric engine technology in Europe.

The E-Power technology uses an internal combustion engine (ICE) to act as a generator and provide energy which is stored in a high-output battery pack. In other driving scenarios, the electric energy from the generator can be taken directly to the motors, according to Nissan. However, the ICE engine does not directly power the wheels. The wheels are exclusively propelled by electric motors which means the car gets instant torque just like a standard pure battery electric vehicle (BEV). Additionally, the driver will get the advantage of engine sounds, effectively getting the best of both worlds.

Nissan has gone the extra mile to develop a special system called Linear Tune, it monitors the gasoline engine and progressively increases the rotation speed to meet the electric motor’s energy demands, in other words, if the car is moving faster (electric motors rotating faster) , the combustion engine sounds will grow louder (due to higher revolutions per second of the ICE engine).

The combustion engine is a 1.5 liter setup with 156 horsepower (hp) while the electric motor 190hp . The combined partnership of both engines have a consumption of 53.3mpg (22.6 km per litre) and have CO2 emissions from 119g/km.

The Qashqai e-power will also have partial one pedal driving which can reduce the speed of the car to a slow creep, not a full stop without the driver using the brake pedal.

There will be a high-spec model which will be loaded with a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports wireless Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard display and a 10.8-inch heads-up display.

The pricing for the Qashqai E-Power hasn’t been revealed, but for comparison the non E – Power versions of the SUV start at £23,535 ($30,877) for the base model to £32,335 ($42,422) for the top spec version.

Following complaints, Facebook content moderators in Kenya will receive a 30-50% pay rise.

Kenyan Facebook content moderators would have a wage raise of 30 to 50 percent. This news comes two weeks after TIME published an investigation article revealing that Sama, the business in charge of Facebook’s Sub-Saharan Africa content moderation since 2019, was paying content moderators poorly and providing bad working conditions in Nairobi.

According to TIME sources, Sama told staff in a meeting on Tuesday that every content moderator will get an extra 20,000 Kenyan shillings ($176) every month.

“The raise means that the lowest-paid Facebook content moderators at Sama will now take home around 50,000 Kenyan shillings ($439) each month after-tax, or around $2.20 per hour for a 9-hour working day. This is up from around $1.50 per hour previously.”

According to the sources, all content moderators were also guaranteed yearly incentives worth one month’s salary as an incentive to stay at the firm.

Despite the obvious link, Habel Kamau, a human resources director at Sama’s Nairobi office, claims that the salary boost is unrelated to TIME’s publication of the research. He said that talks about a pay hike had been going on for a time and that the raise was made possible by budget savings elsewhere, not by Sama getting more money from Facebook.

Although many content moderators are pleased with the wage increase, others believe it is insufficient. Employees at Sama continue to be among Facebook’s lowest-paid workers elsewhere on the planet. While Sama’s lowest beginning wage for a Facebook content moderator is $2.20 per hour, outsourced Facebook content moderators in the United States earn an average of $18 per hour.

Employees have demanded that their wages be increased in 2019, according to South African Daniel Motaung, a former Sama employee who was sacked after attempting to establish a union.

“This increase will make a difference but it won’t change their lives,” Motaung said in the statement. “They still won’t be able to buy a house or feed their families in line with the ‘lifting the poor out of poverty narrative that Sama continuously boasts about.”

Sama declined to comment on charges that company executives thwarted a unionization campaign in 2019, causing Motaung to lose his job. Facebook’s parent company, Meta, also declined to comment on the salary hike announcement. The wage boost is considered as a victory for the content moderators and a confirmation of the value of employees speaking up.

Microsoft will organize a three-day worldwide digital camp for girls in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics as part of the festivities scheduled for this year’s International Women’s Day on March 8. (STEM). The project, which is totally virtual, allows participants to meet with girls from Africa and North America for two-hour seminars between March 7th and 10th.

The Microsoft International DigiGirlz Camp is a collaboration between Microsoft and Fair Chance Learning that aims to provide middle and high school girls with hands-on technology experience, workshops to help them bring their ideas to life, and opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration and networking. The program is aimed at females aged 11 to 17.

The camp theme is “lifelong learning.”

By attending Microsoft DigiGirlz Day, young women may learn about the different options available in the high-tech business, acquire hands-on experience, and learn from peers and other women already working in the area. This year’s camp theme is “lifelong learning.”

Wanjira Kamwere, Microsoft Africa Technology Office’s Business Development Manager announced the program.

“The youth who grasp today’s tech will change tomorrow’s world. Right now, women lack a clear pathway to technological experience and resources. At Microsoft DigiGirlz, we’re helping girls across the globe—and especially those in under-represented communities—learn the skills they need to realize their passions in a tech-filled future,” 

Registrations for students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Because event content and curriculum may be tailored to specific age groups, applicants should double-check before enrolling a student in a DigiGirlz program. An adult aged 18 or older must complete the DigiGirlz registration form. A parent or legal guardian of a student under the age of 18 may register the student for a DigiGirlz program by filling out the registration form.

Wanjira added:

“The camp is open to girls of all skill levels. It provides hands-on workshops that are led by supportive instructors who can help you increase your abilities. For girls who may have already taken technology classes in school, the camp workshops will provide you with quick exposure to new technologies to help enhance your knowledge,”

Wanjira Kamwere noted that DigiGirlz events are intended to give a gender-specific strategy to introducing girls to job options in technology in a safe environment that is sensitive to prejudices and barriers that may affect their experience. However, everyone who is aligned with our aim to establish an atmosphere that fosters girls’ engagement in technology, regardless of gender identity, is welcome to attend the event.

According to research, women who study STEM courses at first experience a significant drop-off. Equity, Microsoft Launch Virtual Hackathon to University Students in Kenya

Equity Group, in partnership with Microsoft, has launched a virtual hackathon open to students from The University of Nairobi and Meru University of Science and Technology. The Hackathon, which opened for registration on 4th February, saw a total of 663 students from the two universities register to be among the 100 shortlisted participants to take part as innovators.

The Hackathon is the first of its kind to be run by the Group and seeks to drive innovation and crowdsource solutions to address business problems and social issues. Students from the two universities will have an opportunity to take part in a competitive event and collaborate to build proofs of concept and minimum viable products for a pre-defined problem.

Speaking during the launch, Equity Group Managing Director and CEO, Dr. James Mwangi said the Group seeks to explore the use of Hackathons as a tool to drive the discovery of new technologies and process improvement solutions for the Bank.

“We are indeed very happy to be launching our first-ever Equity Hackathon in partnership with Microsoft, The University of Nairobi and Meru University of Science and Technology. The Hackathon promises to be a truly transformational experience for both universities and our institution, as it will enable us to create products and offerings that are beneficial to our people across the markets we operate in, while at the same time offering the students an opportunity to learn and apply their skills to solve business challenges,” said Dr. Mwangi.

Microsoft Kenya Country Manager, Kendi Ntwiga noted that the country stands a chance to be a global player in innovations through a collaborative effort on the part of University and industry linkage.

“Uncertain times call for solutions that are sustainable; solutions that bridge the gaps and challenges that Africa faces. With an average age of 19.6 in Kenya, our youth have the opportunity to engage and be part of the solution,” she said.

Commenting on the role of the universities in preparing their students for the job market,  The University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama said, “The University of Nairobi and Meru University of Science and Technology endeavour to develop closer ties with the industry, such as the banking and ICT industries, to support our students acquire practical skills, beyond what universities can offer from a learning environment.”

Further, Meru University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo added, “Universities play a pivotal role in accelerating knowledge and driving research and innovation. This collaboration is bringing together like-minded organizations to innovate and create lasting change through technology. We are very happy to collaborate with Equity, Microsoft and The University of Nairobi.”

Operational business units from the Bank underwent a rigorous process to identify and craft business and social problem statements, which the students participating in the Equity Hackathon will attempt to solve. These challenges fall within the Payments, Financial Inclusion and Know Your Customer thematic areas.

The Hackathon is set to run from the 17th February to 17th March this year and has been phased into 4 stages. The first phase will involve instructor-led and self-paced training of the participants on Microsoft Azure and the Business Problem Statements. In the second stage, the students will go through the coding with mentorship from representatives from Equity, University of Nairobi, Meru University of Science and Technology and Microsoft. Their solutions will then go through a 1st and 2nd knock off stage, that will culminate in the selection of the 3 winners.

University students taking part in the Hackathon event will stand a chance to win exciting prizes. The grand prize winner or winning group will walk away with a cash prize of Kes. 600,000, 3 months mentorship opportunity from Microsoft, Technical Cloud certificates for all team members and a gift hamper. Egyptian logistics startup Naqla raises $10.5 million pre-Series A funding for expansion.

Naqla, Egypt’s trucking technology platform and marketplace connecting truck owners with cargo companies, has raised $10.5 million in a pre-Series A round. The round was led by major investors El Sewedy Capital Holding (SCH), Hassan Allam Holding (HAH), and the Sallam Family.

Naqla’s key objective is to use technology to modernize and expand Egypt’s supply chain by automating orders between shippers and drivers via its two main apps.

Since its establishment in 2017, Naqla has grown rapidly into 35+ operational zones, controlling the movement and delivery of over 4.6 million tonnes of goods, and now works with over 400 shippers and 10,500 drivers across Egypt.

Naqla’s business model caters to Egypt’s historically underserved road freight sector, which has grown in importance since the start of supply-side constraints caused by Covid. Businesses are constantly looking for ways to improve inland transportation efficiency from Egypt’s major entrance and exit ports in order to keep commodities flowing through their supply chains.

The rapid growth of Egypt’s construction and consumer goods industries has increased demand for trucking, which currently employs 2% of the workforce and accounts for 3-4 percent of GDP – $13 billion in Egypt and $45 billion across the Mena region.

Many of the 1.5 million trucks in Egypt are owned by individual drivers, whom Naqla aims to onboard onto its Carrier ecosystem, consisting of road assistance, finance, insurance, health care and maintenance.

Naqla will use the proceeds of this investment to invest further in its commitment to advancing technology and digitization, positioning the company for growth and development in 2022.

Since establishing the business in 2017, founders Sherif Taher and Samer Sallam have expanded Naqla into a 165-person organization spread across all the major country locations while integrating several strands of technology and instant pricing to provide an exceptional first-class consumer experience for both shippers and truckers.

Chefaa, Egypt’s patient-centred pharmaceutical benefits platform, has secured a round of funding led by Newtown Partners, Global Brain, and GMS Capital Partners.

Chefaa is raising funds to develop its network, enable the launch of its Chefaa Prime product, a complete medical insurance alternative designed for emerging markets, and officially launch in new markets.

Additionally, Chefaa’s efforts to digitise chronic illness management through a comprehensive approach to achieve measurable improvements in chronic patients’ quality of life will be supported by this venture round.

This is also the three VCs’ first venture into the Egyptian market. Newtown Partners, operating out of South Africa is an early-stage venture fund run by entrepreneurs with investment in major names such as Swyft, Reach Labs and Blockfolio.

Global Brain operates out of Japan with a massive portfolio of 24 IPOs and 54 Merge & Acquisitions in industries such as Commerce, Gaming, Fintech and IoT among many more.

Huawei announced the global roll out of Super Device concept for Smart Office, a new solution that greatly enhances cross-device connectivity and collaboration amongst supported Huawei devices. The software-driven feature arrives in line with Huawei’s push towards a Seamless AI Life, which the company envisions across five major scenarios – Health and Fitness, Easy Travel, Smart Office, Entertainment, Smart Home.

As one of the key scenarios of Huawei’s Seamless AI Life, Huawei brings the vision of Boundless Creation and Seamless Communication to the Smart Office, aiming to enable a digitally efficient work life experience by synergizing the two core Huawei capabilities: Cross-Device Collaboration and Ecosystem Integration. Cross-device collaboration enables users to connect multiple devices together into a singular experience, while ecosystem integration closes the gap between Windows and mobile platforms, stimulating creativity and improving communication efficiency.

In Mirror Mode, the PC’s screen is replicated onto the tablet’s display. Glovo Launches Startup Competition in Kenya to Reach More SMEs & Individual Users

Glovo, a delivery platform in Kenya and various other markets has partnered with Esade Business School, Ashoka Africa and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to launch an early-stage tech-based startup competition in Kenya in a new user acquisition strategy.

This is aimed at helping Glovo reach more SMEs and individuals who might need delivery services for their businesses or as individuals. As a general delivery platform, Glovo is in competition with local startups GoBEBA and Sendy and food delivery startups UberEats and Jumia Food. This startup competition is aimed at putting Glovo up and above from the rest of the pack and to get it more mileage and growth.

To participate in the competition, the start-up must not have raised more than USD20,000 in funding. The Competition will be made up of 2 stages. The first stage will be through an online submission while the second stage will be a physical event where the top eight  shortlisted businesses get to pitch their businesses in person to a panel of judges.

The widespread job losses and income cuts have also meant depressed demand for MSMEs’ goods and services, due to reduced purchasing power.

This has left MSMEs struggling and barely surviving. A survey by the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) in October 2020, indicated that about 64% of the MSMEs surveyed had experienced a high or very high negative impact on their businesses from COVID-19. These included loss of customers, liquidity challenges, high cost of operations, inability to pay salaries, and reduced labour productivity.

The MSMEs’ typically limited liquidity, financial flows and reserves, has left them more vulnerable, compared to the larger corporates. Thus, the pandemic, like any other shock, is guaranteed to throw them off balance in a very short time, effectively putting their survival in jeopardy.

This is cause for concern, considering the integral and strategic role that MSMEs play in the economy. This ranges from creating employment opportunities to supporting value chains across industries. It is, therefore, important that these businesses are cushioned from such negative effects, are supported to ride the wave of the crisis, and are enabled to succeed.

When MSMEs thrive, the ripple effect snowballs and is more widespread, inclusively, and sustainably across the economy. Jobs are protected and quality of life enhanced for more households, among other economic benefits.

Of all the kinds of support that businesses require to cushion themselves during such rough patches, the financial kind ranks top. This effectively puts the financial services sector, particularly, in the driver’s seat, to protect these businesses from the harsh effects of the pandemic.

Throughout the pandemic, banks have gallantly stepped up to the frontline, cushioning the economy. Across industries, businesses and individuals have had their loans restructured to give them more time to repay among other measures.

However, there is need for banks and other players in the sector to go the extra mile in protecting MSMEs, the lifeblood of the economy. With the uncertainty surrounding the fast-evolving pandemic, it is still unclear how long it will be here, or the form and shape that it will take. A business-as-usual approach will not cut it for the situation that businesses find themselves in presently.

The recently launched credit guarantee scheme by the National Treasury and seven local banks is one such innovative approach towards unlocking credit for MSMEs. This assurance from government will enhance banks’ confidence to lend to businesses, on flexible terms.

Basically, the participating commercial banks will independently review the ability of the businesses to repay the loan and determine applicable interest rate based on risk of default. The Treasury will guarantee 25% of the loan in case of defaults while the Bank will take up the balance under third-party credit risk mitigation scheme. This initiative is a sure game changer for the MSMEs as they seek to stay afloat in the wake of the economic crisis.

Besides, this will go a long way in supporting rural-based businesses to flourish, touching on a vast majority of the Kenya’s population. This will contribute significantly towards driving sustainable and inclusive growth that leaves no one behind. The rural population is still locked from certain advantages and opportunities that the urban population and large businesses enjoy. Access to credit facilities is one such factor.

The challenge for the banking industry now is to design concessional loans for businesses, with much more favourable terms. Though in dire need of working capital to stay afloat, the normal terms may not be suitable for businesses. Adequate financing is critical to not only help them weather these tough times, but also put them in good stead to recover and build back better. This is for example the inspiration behind KCB Bank’s new, discounted MSME loan that comes with the options of being either secured or unsecured.

Alongside such innovative financing, businesses also need training and advisory support to weather effects of the pandemic. In the unfamiliar territory that businesses are increasingly finding themselves in, opportunities for continuous upskilling, puts them in good stead to effectively deal with the situation and thrive.

It is such out-of-the-box support that could be the difference between MSMEs staying in operation or struggling and eventually having to fold, at a huge cost to the economy. These may just be the straws that businesses clutch on to weather the pandemic.

The pandemic has been a wake-up call for banks to rethink their business models and sharpen their priorities to create opportunities for MSMEs to navigate the crisis.

Codecademy, a leading online technical learning platform, is partnering with advocacy group Black and Brilliant to launch an applied artificial intelligence accelerator and mentorship program in Africa.

Following the success of their first accelerator, which they launched together in 2021, the two organizations are partnering up once more to expand the program to Africa and empower a new generation of tech talent in the region.

The Codecademy and Black and Brilliant programmes will focus on both the hard and soft skills needed to develop successful AI careers, combining upskilling and mentorship.

Participants will learn the principles of data science, data engineering, and programming over the course of ten weeks utilizing Codecademy’s self-guided, hands-on learning platform.

Participants will also work with a group of coaches and mentors from companies like as Shopify, Google, and Fujitsu to explore topics such as user experience, ethics and bias, and the business of AI with a group of coaches and mentors from organizations such as Shopify, Google, and Fujitsu.

“As AI becomes more powerful, it’s imperative that people of all backgrounds, nationalities, races, and genders have the opportunity to leverage that power – so that they can make an impact on their communities and the world at large,” said Zach Sims, co-founder and CEO of Codeacademy. “Through education and mentorship, our goal is to empower a new generation of global leaders in AI, equipping them with the skills they need to solve problems and incite change through technology.”

Rocket Health, a telemedicine and last-mile healthcare provider based in Uganda, has raised $5 million in a Series A funding round to accelerate its technology roadmap and geographic expansion across Uganda and into Kenya.

Rocket Health, which was founded in 2012, is Uganda’s leading telemedicine provider, providing an end-to-end healthcare experience to over 25,000 patients. The startup’s solution leverages four services: 24/7 teleconsultations, medicine delivery, home sample collection for laboratory diagnostic testing, and physical specialist clinic consultations.

Creadev, an evergreen investment fund backed by the Mulliez family of French entrepreneurs, is leading Rocket Health’s $5 million Series A round. Creadev was joined in the round by existing early-stage African investors Grenfell Holdings and LoftyInc Capital Management.The startup will use the funding to expand further across Uganda and into Kenya.

“Rocket Health is on a quest to make quality primary healthcare accessible, affordable and convenient to achieve the best outcomes for as many Africans as possible through the exponential power of technology,” said Dr Davis Musinguzi, Rocket Health’s founder and CEO.

Vodacom, has launched Africa’s first Amazon Web Services (AWS) Outposts Innovation Lab in collaboration with AWS and Intel. The laboratory will focus on accelerating technology innovations across different industries, delivering faster scalability, and creating the opportunity to use infrastructure and technologies to solve business challenges.

The laboratory is expected to help enterprise and public sector customers of Vodacom Business to accelerate their digital transformation journey by building, managing, and scaling their local applications using AWS services and tools.

The long term impact of the laboratory is that customers will, through the use of new technologies, be able to save time and money in how they run their businesses, as well as create enhanced experiences for their own customers. Vodacom’s customers can now reach out to Vodacom to validate their hybrid use cases and test their workloads on AWS Outposts before deploying them in production.

The laboratory is located in Johannesburg and will serve as a Proof of Concept (POC) setup for customers to test their applications and environment for performance on AWS Outposts. Intel-powered AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that is designed to provide AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to virtually any on-premises or edge location. It enables the running of applications that have low latency, data residency, and local data processing needs on premises, while reducing the time, resources, and operational risk required to procure, manage, and upgrade on-premises infrastructure.

Kenya Power will begin offering fixed internet services.

Kenya Power will begin selling high-speed internet to businesses in an effort to diversify its revenue streams and capitalize on the country’s expanding data usage. The energy distributor has been leasing fibre-optic cables connecting to its transmission lines to internet service providers, and this is a step ahead.

After conducting pilot testing with larger power users, the utility will announce a package that will allow its business clients to buy internet and electricity as a package in the coming weeks.

Competition.

This will force Safaricom, Wananchi Group (Zuku), and Jamii Telecoms, which hold 85.1 percent of Kenya’s fixed data market, to compete for internet subscribers.

Kenya Power said in a statement:

“We will provide our corporate sector customers with a bundled service of electricity and internet,”

“Kenya Power will leverage on our vast network to tap into the market…we will offer the corporates the option of using our internet for their primary use or redundancy.”
