0

Citi Tech for Integrity Challenge (T4I) has been creating technology solutions to world wide problems. The aim of this new project is to promote integrity, accountability and transparency in the public sector and beyond. In unison with technology innovators, this initiative has been led by Citi in collaboration with public and private sector allies. T4I will also provide the support and infrastructure that tech innovators need to tailor new technology solutions for this market.

This will be a global competition where companies are invited to submit technology solutions. As many world wide problems erupt from the governments the challenge will seek to source innovation in a number of areas, including government transactions and procurement; culture, ethics and citizen engagement, cutting red tape; and information security and identity. Once contestants enroll particular participants will enroll in a virtual accelerator program, which provide mentors, curriculum and infrastructure support.

Safaricom Introduces Real Time Price Checks on M-PESA

0

M-PESA customers will now be able to receive information on the cost of each transaction made.  This new update will be made available to all 24 million M-PESA customers in three phases, with the first phase already in progress. This new plan is meant to reduce the number of erroneous transactions made and will enhance the customer experience on the M-PESA platform. The Safaricom Corporate Affairs Director Stephen Chege said that there have been working on a number of proactive enhancements such as Hakikisha with the aim of having a better mobile transfer experience.

Set to be rolled out in three phases, customers will first receive notifications on charges paid for a transaction as part of the M-PESA confirmation message.

In the second phase, customers will receive a pop up message informing them of any charges prior to the transactions. The third phase will see the service being made available to value-added M-PESA financial products including M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Okoa Stima and M-tiba. These new phases will be introduced in the near future after the first phase has been well implemented. Safaricom has in the last six months implemented a range of technical upgrades and tests in readiness for the customer-friendly developments that alert them as to how much they are spending per transaction, with no downtime to customers.

The changes are part of the enriched second generation M-PESA system which was implemented in April 2015. In addition to increasing M-PESA’s transactions capacity, the new system has improved system stability, enabled the support of more features and the roll out of new features on the system.

Most recently, Safaricom announced that it would be removing all transactions costs for amounts under Sh100 under the M-PESA Kadogo proposition launched in November 2016.

WhatsApp to let users edit and recall sent messages.

0

WhatsApp could soon introduce the ability to recall sent messages, easing the minds of people that regularly panic after sending texts by mistake. In 2016 Kenyans on twitter popularly known as KOT could not rest for a better part of the day after  a screen short from  one WhatsApp group -Embakasi Prayer Cell, went viral portraying what one member, Ochieng Ocholla popular known ‘Bro Ocholla’’ posted contrary to the groups agenda of the day or purpose.

Ironically, corporate organizations starting with the Kenya airways to Safaricom, Orange Mobile, Durex, and KFC all took advantage of the trending topic to reach out to the big audience online with attractive advertisements on their latest offers.

The long-awaited feature will mean that users can delete a message from the receiver’s phone if it is yet to be read. The delete function is currently being tested on the beta version of WhatsApp’s next update, along with the ability to edit send messages that haven’t been read.

Features are generally included in beta versions before making them into a full consumer release, although it is unclear when this might be.

As well as these edit tools, WhatsApp is also testing a new feature that could make it a lot easier to coordinate meeting a group of friends.

A new feature unique to WhatsApp is being tested that lets users send friends their moving location so that they can find one another more easily.

Called Live Location Tracking, it lets users show their movements to friends within a group chat. They can opt to share their moving position for a limited time of one, two or five minutes.

It builds on WhatsApp’s popular send your location feature that allows users to share their exact position at a given time.

WhatsApp users will probably have to manually turn it on in Settings, allaying privacy fears. It is currently being tested in the beta version of the messaging app’s next update, meaning that it could soon be released to all users, although no time frame has been announced.

Other features being tested in the beta include the ability to reply to status messages, as well as shaking you phone within a conversation to contact WhatsApp and report spam.

One of its biggest focuses recently has been to add live features that take it beyond text messaging, such as video calling. It also recently added the ability to edit pictures and draw on them, in a similar way to Snapchat.

How To Turn Your Home Into A Smart Home with QLED Samsung TVs.

0

Numerous centuries ago before smart televisions (TVs) were developed, we would all pull together at the only home in the village with a TV, a red great wall TV, it was the excellent form of entertainment and the number one optical information pivot.

We would close the door to avoid interruptions from anyone and be assured of security. Many years later, the daily advancing technology has turned tables upside down. Internet was a dream; I guess no one had ever thought of ever streaming videos live or something close to that, and today Samsung QLED 4K television is working towards being a hub that ties all the connected devices in your home together.

Few of us are lucky enough to have the wherewithal to spend several thousand shillings every year just so we can say we have the very latest TV technology available. But its sure fun to look, and it will always be time for some of us to upgrade from the screen we’ve been just been tolerating.

Samsung’s flagship 75in (190cm) QLED 4K TV features the latest version of its quantum dot technology – tiny particles that emit different colours of light. These now feature a metal material that the firm says allows for better colour reproduction.

On the software end, Samsung are still powered by Tizen and feature basically the same user interface as last year. But there are some new additions like a sports mode that aggregates scores and other content from your favourite teams and an expanded Music section that lets you Shazam music as it’s playing in a TV show and immediately launch that track in Spotify another streaming services.

Samsung is also looking to clean up how its TVs look in your living room. New this year is a clear-coloured “Invisible Connection cable” that runs from the TV to an external breakout box where you’ll find all the HDMI ports and other critical connections (besides power, which is a separate input). This might be appreciated by people who don’t want to run their home theatre cables behind a wall or find some other clever way of concealing them.

The overall effect of this is to produce a much lower cable clutter level when one of the TVs is mounted to a wall or sitting in a living room. In addition to this effort at smoother, more elegant design, Samsung has given the QLED TVs what it calls a “no-gap wall mount”, which allows for seamless mounting to a wall since the hardware that holds the TV in place is concealed inside the back of a QLED television and also designed to allow for easy tilting of the display as well automatic levelling.

In other words, the 2017 QLED Samsung TVs are showing themselves to be true stunners that are virtually guaranteed to make consumers fall in love in 2017, when they go on sale at some point in March.

Microsoft and Liquid Telecom working together to accelerate cloud adoption in Africa

0

Microsoft East Africa and Liquid Telecom have joined forces to improve and accelerate the use of cloud services across Africa. The joint project will help boost the continent’s access to world-class software.

Microsoft has a long-term strategic vision to enable affordable broadband access to its customers to empower business and increase productivity. To move this objective forward, Microsoft will collaborate with Liquid Telecom, a pan-African telecommunications provider that operates the region’s largest independent fibre network, which spans over 40,000km across 12 countries.

The joint effort will focus on the delivery of cloud services, small-and-medium business development and the enablement of a television white space technology and partner ecosystem to provide further connectivity across the continent.

Cloud-based operations provide many tangible benefits for businesses, including reduced costs with greater levels of scalability and the ability to deliver new products and services to market faster than traditional IT solutions.

However, businesses across Africa have traditionally been slower adopters of cloud services, particularly in areas with limited ICT infrastructure. The partnership will address this by combining Liquid Telecom’s extensive network reach with Microsoft’s innovative business solutions that bring the cloud closer to the end user.

“We believe in the power and potential of businesses in Africa and we look forward to providing the best that cloud computing has to offer. In the age of digital transformation, we want to provide not only secure data storage, but the efficiency and scalability that businesses need to achieve more,” says Frank McCosker, General Manager of Affordable Access and Smart Financing at Microsoft 4Afrika.

Through fast and more affordable connectivity, Microsoft’s extensive cloud-based software offerings, such as Azure and Office 365, will become more accessible through Liquid Telecom. This will enhance business potential and enable startups and home-grown operations to be more productive and efficient.

As part of the project, Microsoft and Liquid Telecom will also be creating ‘Business in a Box’, which will offer small-and-medium businesses a cloud-based toolkit of relevant applications, cloud services and connectivity.

“Cloud computing is still gaining momentum on the continent, but we believe it has the potential to transform the way businesses of all sizes operate. Through better connectivity, faster internet and secure cloud offerings, businesses will have the platforms and tools they need to grow and succeed. We have the infrastructure to enable locally and regionally hosted cloud solutions keeping African data in Africa,” says Ben Roberts, Group CTO of Liquid Telecom.

The project, with the scope to influence and improve the capabilities of cloud computing in Africa, will accelerate the economic growth and competitiveness of Africa.

As time has gone by taxi app’s such as Little Cabs and Taxify have been great competiton. But even with this developments Uber does not lag behind, apart from reducing their prices they have now improved the app experience to make your life easier. Here are the things you need to know.

  1. The new Uber app learns from your routines and suggests new “shortcuts” that your driver will use. This means you can get moving faster and save your money as you get to your destination faster.

  2. Are you tired of asking your friends where they are every few minutes? You can now skip the texting back and forth by syncing your contacts with the app by simply typing a friend’s name into the search bar and once they share their location you can easily arrive to where they are.

How To Self-Check fake news from real news.

0

Fake articles exist on the side-line of news, the borders of fact. Driving out shocking, garbage with a goal of going viral and earning some serious ad-money. This is a huge challenge, as there is excess of fake news on the internet. On suggests there are dozens of major fake news sites, whose social media followings rise into the millions. To help you separate fact from fiction, here are few Ways.

Pay attention to the domain and URL; Recognized news organizations usually own their domains and they have a standard look that you are probably familiar with. Fake news may include fake sources, false urls, and/or “alternative facts” that can be disproven through further research. When in doubt, dig deeper. Facts can be verified.

Read the “About Us” section; most sites will have a lot of information about the news outlet, the company that runs it, members of leadership, and the mission and ethics statement behind an organization. The language used here is straightforward. If it’s sensational and seems excessive, you should be hesitant. Also, you should be able to find out more information about the organization’s leaders in places other than that site.

Can you find a similar article on the Internet? Do a simple keyword search on Google for a similar article. If you’re unable to find anything remotely similar, chances are that the author didn’t do their research, made up much of the information in the article, or are fully sharing their opinion on a topic not factual news. Stick to trusting news articles that have similar pieces found on the Internet.

When was it published? Look at the publication date. If it’s breaking news, be extra careful.

A Poll is featured; Polls form the basis of many a news article, and very often they’re totally legitimate. After all, people are constantly trying to assess everything from our preference for political candidates to whether or not we believe in global warming. The problem with polls is that they can be misleading depending upon how the questions are phrased. Or the poll might be fine, but the results are taken out of context.

The Website Carries a Disclaimer; On every page that it contains both “real shocking news” and “parody news,” then adds, “Please note that articles written on this site are for entertainment and satirical purposes only.” So is it all satire or only partial satire? And if partial, which stories are true?

It Predicts a Future Disaster; A fair number of fake news stories hook readers in because they predict a future disaster. Yes, some of them are pretty incredible and seem obviously fake — the date of the world’s ending, for example, or the start of World War III. But some seem rather believable.

Who wrote it?  Real news contains the real by-line of a real journalist dedicated to the truth. Fake news (including “sponsored content” and traditional corporate ads) does not. Once you find the by-line, look at the writer’s bio. This can help you identify whether the item you’re reading is a reported news article.

Fake news is a problem, if you see your friends sharing obviously fake news, be a friend and kindly tell them it’s not real. Don’t shy away from these conversations even if they might be uncomfortable. As said, everyone has to help fix the fake news problem.

FiveSok Platform Helps Tackle Unemployment By Allowing Youth to Sell Their Services

0

Unemployment is a major challenge that affects youth across Kenya. Approximately 800,000 young Kenyans enter the labor market every year and youth unemployment is estimated to be as high as 35%, compared to the overall national unemployment rate of 10%. Furthermore, 80% of unemployed Kenyans are below 35 years old.

To combat this crisis, several youth are forced to become more or less innovative and produce money by using their various skills or starting their own businesses. Yet from that, a new problem arises, the search for clients and customers to successfully drive their self made businesses. One such platform called FiveSok, the Swahili slang for five hundred, encourages employment by enabling youth to sell their skills to interested buyers for Kshs 500-5000.

The platform which launched earlier last year, had on the 7th of February introduced a new upgrade feature that allows people to request for particular services that they are seeking. These requested services are open for anyone to apply, (like tenders). Originally, the FiveSok was designed for experts to just post services that they can do for a certain amount, and for buyers to conveniently find the experts; the ‘Service Requests’ are an important addition and a new avenue for young people to find work.

To buy a service one has to login or register. Find what they are looking for and then send the expert a quick message. Buyers are ensured a large database of experts to select from, and affordable services that have been restricted to a range of between 500 – 5,000 Shillings, of which once paid is  securely held until the job has been completed.

Sellers or experts in turn enjoy earning money through selling their skills, talents and services, freedom to work at their own leisure and a payment guarantee upon a successful delivery.

New Chapter of investment for Neotel’s network and services as it officially becomes part of Liquid Telecom

0

IMG_5642

South African communications network operator Neotel has today officially become part of the pan-African telecoms group Liquid Telecom, marking a new era of investment in Neotel’s network and services across South Africa.

Through substantial new capital from Liquid Telecom, which is a subsidiary of Econet Global, a revitalised Neotel will emerge on the South African market with significantly enhanced service offerings for enterprises and consumers.

Over the coming months, Liquid Telecom plans to make extensive upgrades and expansions to Neotel’s network, delivering greater levels of high-speed connectivity to more customers across South Africa.

Liquid Telecom  plans to make substantial investment in Neotel’s data centre capabilities, which currently include two Tier 3 designed state-of-the-art data centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

For the first time, Neotel’s operations and focus will also become pan-African. Its network in South Africa will link together with Liquid Telecom’s extensive fibre footprint to offer access via a single connection to over 40,000km of cross border, national and metro fibre networks. This will give Liquid Telecom unrivalled reach across Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.
“I am delighted to officially welcome Neotel into the Liquid Telecom Group,” says Nic Rudnick, Group CEO of Liquid Telecom. “Today is an important new chapter for Neotel. The refinancing of the company’s balance sheet will see a revitalised Neotel enter the market with the ability to offer consumers and businesses greater quality services and products delivered through world-class networks.
Liquid Telecom and 30% equity partner Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH), a community-based South African investment group, have been preparing for the integration of Neotel since receiving regulatory approval for the ZAR 6.55 billion acquisition in December

Liquid Telecom has a strong history of acquiring businesses and transforming them to profitability. Neotel will benefit from Liquid Telecom’s pan-African experience and technology leadership, helping to enhance systems and processes across its operations as well as drive profitability.

The acquisition includes two of Neotel’s Tier 3 designed state-of-the-art data centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which offer a combined 1,700 square metres of rack space. The facilities serve major carriers, ISPs, enterprises and international service providers, and will complement the East Africa Data Centre, which Liquid Telecom operates in Nairobi, Kenya.

Liquid Telecom’s growth strategy combines strategic acquisitions across Africa with ongoing investment in the rollout of fibre. It also recently completed the acquisition of Tanzania’s leading ISP Raha, which will see further investment in both Raha’s network and services across Tanzania.

A Brief Look At Huawei GR5 Dual-Camera.

0

Huawei’s committed on making 2017 the year of the dual-camera, as the company has launched two new dual-camera equipped smartphones. While the Mate 9 phablet will probably get the most oohs and aahs from bystanders, a majority of consumers who want to try out the dual-camera magic will most certainly drop towards the more affordable GR5.

The GR5 is a big improvement over last year’s model, though it’s also more expensive. Today we’ll be checking out what Huawei’s dual-camera arrangement brings to the table, and what it means for you.

A premium-looking exterior .

Huawei’s original GR5 looked more expensive than it actually, The 2017 GR5 has a composite metal body, meaning, a body that’s been infused with both metal and glass to achieve a premium-looking exterior, and the phone mostly looks the part. The rear of the device has a metal back with plastic strips on the top and bottom for the requisite antennas. There’s a very slight chamfer on the side where the plastic front meets the metal back.

The dual-rear camera module stick out a few millimetres from the rear, sporting a concentric circle design and a metal-looking bezel. If there’s one flaw in the phone’s design, it’s definitely this, since the bezel isn’t completely flat with the glass protecting the cameras, it’s the first thing that contacts a surface when you lay the phone down, camera first. Since the bezel is so thin, it’s very easy to damage and chip. To be fair Huawei does include a case with every purchase that should mitigate that, though it makes the phone a wee bit stouter when installed.

Right below the dual-camera setup is the fingerprint scanner, and much like the other fingerprint scanners on Huawei’s phones, the one in the 2017 version of the GR5 unlocks the phone quickly and easily. Setting up that fingerprint scanner is quick and easy.

Going around the phone, you’ll see the volume rocker and power button on the right, while the 3.5mm jack is located up top. The micro SD/SIM tray is located on the left side of the device, while the USB port is on the bottom, flanked by speaker grilles (though only the right grille actually generates audio).

The phone uses a 5.5-inch LCD display that has full HD resolution (1920 x 1080). Colors are good overall and the display is bright enough to see even under noonday sun. One thing that we did notice though that it’s a little washed out for our tastes, though we’ve probably been spoiled by the amount of AMOLED displays we’ve been seeing lately. In any case, the phone’s display does its job well, and we have no major issues with it.

Phone GR5 takes a huge leap in terms of processor performance over its predecessor, armed with a HI Silicon Kirin 655 octa-core processor motoring along at blistering 2.1GHz, compared to the Snapdragon 616 octa-core processor in the previous model. Aside from higher clock speed, the 2017 version of the GR5 also benefits from a better, smaller and more efficient 16nm manufacturing process, unlike the 28nm lithography of the Snapdragon 616 processor in last year’s model, and Snapdragon 430 in the GR5 2017’s closest competitors. The 2017 GR5 has no issues with connectivity, with the phone receiving excellent LTE speeds as long as your network does its part. The phone connects to GPS satellites quickly, and we experienced zero issues with call quality. Sound from the speakers are a little soft though, and sound a bit tinny.

The 2017 GR5 is equipped with two cameras at the rear: a primary 12-megapixel shooter and a 2-megapixel secondary camera. Just like the Honor 6 Plus, the 2-megapixel secondary camera is for taking depth information, which is combined with the 12-megapixel main camera to produce software bokeh in shots.

This year’s GR5 gets a leg up in the battery department compared to its older brother, packing a 3340mAh battery inside of its body. Huawei quotes around two days of battery life on a single charge, which is quite a claim.

A Way Out of No Way And Guaranteed Freedom of Thought.

0

This a filling that’s  always triggering your mind, where you have a boss and  It’s Friday afternoon at the office and with one eye stuck to the clock and the other fastened to the door. The day feels like it’s never going to end.

That desk job that had promised so much at the start has left you be anxious about Monday mornings and together with how many brain cells you have, left as they waste away up and die from lack of use you have boundaries that you can’t violate.

This where your mind goes  to when your teen and remember that’s moments, your first diary in high school, nothing to write on, all what come in your mind was to set goals. Defined what wanted with your life. I always remember mine and wonder what happened.

When was young, could write what we wanted with our life. Now grown up and no longer living with our parents, having all that freedom longed at early twenties, but always anxious every morning when its initiate our mind will be under supervision for next 7 to 8 hours.

Freelance work offers tremendous advantages and can represent an attractive alternative to a traditional job. If you are considering a freelance career, you should explore the benefits and pitfalls of freelancing.

Working as a freelance is the best way to get to determine yourself, your product/service and a guarantee field where input is parallel to outputs. This only the field that’s built a system of similarly-skilled experts, suppliers, clients and advisors. Not only that, but freelancing is a way of life that affords a lifestyle that working for someone else simply does not.

Working under supervision denies all you imagined of being a sole working lifestyle that, would work, and could provide you with the ultimate life/work balance, a great income and a solid freedom that isn’t possible when working for anybody else, or when somebody else works for you. Also as a freelance you enjoy

Flexibility of hours – Working from home or from a remote workplace as a freelancer allows you to dictate your own hours and work at times most convenient to you.

Income control – Your income is the direct result of your own efforts rather than being set by the law firm or company. In most cases, the harder you work, the greater the reward.

New skills – As a freelancer, you will learn new skills out of necessity that you might not gain as a traditional legal employee.

No office politics – Office politics are non-existent for solo freelancers. If you work alone, you are guaranteed to have the corner office.

Work load control – As a freelance worker, you can control your work load. While client demands can, at times, dictate your schedule, you can turn away work during busy times or accept more work during lean times.

Finally, when one try and be his own, there is a chance to work when, and importantly where, you feel more productive. One can have huge benefits and also bring with it a happier, healthier lifestyle.

How Emmanuel Katto Balances Business and Sports and Succeeds in Both

0

It is no secret that Emmanuel Katto is one of Uganda’s rally legends. Fondly known as ‘Emka’, Emmanuel Katto broke Karim Hirji’s stranglehold on the national title by winning the Holy Grail in 1996 using a Toyota Celica. However, what many of his east African rally fans do not know is that, Emmanuel Katto is a business magnate, entrepreneur, investor and a serial philanthropist.

In 1986, Emmanuel Katto registered his first company Ascot Associates Limited, a company that he runs till today.  Ascot Associates Limited specializes in Government Procurement Services, Commodity Trading and Power Generation. Since then, Emmanuel Katto has started businesses that cut across numerous industries from energy, government procurement to real estate.

Just how does Emmanuel Katto manage to juggle between sports and business? According to an article published on his official website www.emmanuelkatto.com, Emmanuel Katto points out the following:

He Makes Deliberate Choices About What He Wants In Life

Instead of just letting life happen, Emmanuel Katto makes deliberate choices about what he wants from life and how he wants to spend his time. He talks to his business partners, family, and other stakeholders who are important in his life, and comes up with a road map of what is important to him, how he wants to spend his time, and commit to following his path.

He Sets Aside Time For Family, Friends and Important Interests

Emmanuel Katto makes a point of planning and booking time off to spend outside work. He powerfully guards his time. He has mastered the art of time management. This allows him to pursue his passion for rallying while running very successful business ventures simultaneously.  While emergencies happen and situations come up that need his attention at work on occasion while he is out there rallying, he strongly resist any intrusion on this time.

Emmanuel Katto Has Goals Aligned With Pursuing His Passion

Many people go through life and get caught up in situations and circumstances that end up controlling them. Those that achieve balance have a defined plan around time frames and are willing to make some sacrifices to get what they want in the end. ‘Emka’ understands this and he knows that, for him to succeed his has to set up and achieve goals both in business and sports.

He Has Developed A Strong Support Network

Emmanuel Katto has a strong support network that he depends upon to help him get through difficult times. He is a giver who typically extends himself to help out in his community, business circles and family.

Aga Khan Academy Mombasa Student invents a bump detector gadget to curb road accidents

0

Aga Khan Academy Mombasa on Friday held an exhibition that saw 16 year old Telvin Kameta showcase a personally invented bump detector gadget that aims to reduce road accidents.

The project which is part of the annual Personal Project Exhibition of the Academy’s Year 10 students, represents the culmination of intensive year-long projects that identify areas of need, backed up by intensive research which are then developed into a viable product or outcome.

Kameta was motivated to come up with the idea following growing concern of road accidents with 3,057 people killed in road crashes in the country in 2015.

The exhibition which featured about 80 innovative projects, also saw ShashankArvindan present a model for a solar powered airport for Mombasa and Suleiman Mwachizi unveil an electrostatic precipitator to control air pollution.

These projects are particularly relevantconsidering the issues affecting Kenya like the heavy cost of electricity, elevated pollution levels and an exceptionally high record of road deaths.

However, the projects’ scope has not been confined to these issues alone. Other projects range from an app for diabetics to an initiative for a rewarding and enjoyable home for elderly people with limited mobility to cosmetics developed from local wild plants.

The students’ skills in identifying potential areas for innovation and constructing viable solutions is borne of the inquiry-based approach taken at AKA Mombasa, which is one of the key features of the globally recognised International Baccalaureate curriculum.

“Through the Personal Project, students are able to take principled actionthat would include solving real life problems, which affect their immediate and even extended community. The completion of the Personal Project is helpful to the students at the Academy as it helps them to develop the attributes of the IB learner profile, which includes being caring, inquisitive and knowledgeable. It is an opportunity for them to demonstrate crucial skills emphasized in the Middle Years Programme – social skills,self-management, and research. It also fosters the development of independent, lifelong learners,” says Esther Nondi, Middle Years Programme (MYP) Coordinator at the Academy.

Many of the challenges addressed by the Personal Project require the application of science, technology and social innovation skills, which are considered central to the achievement of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and Africa’s Development Agenda. Yet skills in these areas remain scarce in Kenya with the 2015 Innovation Index ranking Kenya at position 92 out of 141 countries.

Against this backdrop, the Aga Khan Academy strives to create young leaders who are passionate about creating positive change in their communities using their knowledge and unique skillset. The aim is to equip them to deal with 21st century challenges, utilizing critical thinking and innovative means to resolve some of the toughest challenges faced by communities across the region.

Hustlers Technician Jobs are Gradually overtaking White Collar Jobs.

0

Mass joblessness, especially among the sprightly and innovative youth, is a drag on the economy. Unemployment has also been fanned by the view among companies that fresh graduates lack specialised skills and experience needed to perform tasks. Every corner you turn there is a University or a College University that seems to have sprung out of nowhere dishing out degrees like sweets at a nursery school party ,all thanks to Kibaki’s presidential era. This scenario accelerated an already dire situation of Jobless graduates at the expense of technical colleges that produced seriously skilled work force.

The industry was left with little supply of semi-skilled labourers and a massive demand of their services, and these guys are making a killing from that. Go ask how much it is to buy a nice sofa set for your one bedroom in Kinoo; ksh 40,000 at the least and the guy barely uses 50% of that on raw material. Anything that is Jua Kali made has been ridiculously overpriced just because we mostly want those antiques that we can barely afford and we are even willing to take loans to buy them. The Middle class dilemma.

We recently met an entrepreneur, who started Nairobi Handyman services which provides a one stop shop for semi-skilled and unskilled labour to Nairobi residents and those surrounding Nairobi to find out why they decided to travel that route. He says that industry is growing very fast as it is directly related to the real estate growth.

What is Nairobi Handyman?

Nairobi Handyman is a one stop shop for semi-skilled and unskilled labour.  We are that place you call when you need some repairs done, some home renovations, some cleaning done etc. Our key focus is in home and office repairs, renovations, remodelling and personalized cleaning services, it was registered in 2013 but we opened our doors early 2015.Nairobi Handyman was founded by Maina Harrison a BCOM (accounting graduate from KCA University.

What inspired you to start Nairobi Handyman Services?

Since my childhood I was always interested in Manual activities such as carpentry. Then when I went to the university entrepreneurship related units and talks were my favourite, I also used to be and still am a fan of shark tank show and that’s where I got the idea from.  So one thing led to the other.

How does Nairobi Handyman work?

It’s very simple; you want something fixed or cleaned at home or office. Give us a call, we will give you a free quote for small jobs but if it’s a big job we will do a site visit and advice on how to go about it. Once we do a site visit we will send a quote and a working plan. That simple.

How Many customers do you currently have?

Many. We have both commercial and individual clients, we work for realtor companies, offices, landlords etc.

Do you have any competitors?

Yes we do. Our main competitors are the individual technicians who work independently. We also have several handyman companies around Nairobi

What’s unique about you that differentiates you from the competition?

We focus on timeliness, efficiency, safety and quality. We ensure that our technicians are always on time and they are well vetted to ensure that the safety of the client’s property is guaranteed and that’s why we have zero cases of lost client’s items.

What challenges does Nairobi Handyman Face as a start up?

Market penetration challenges- it’s normally very tough to have people accept a new service or new product in the market. It time and money consuming. Money challenges- money to expand, promote and acquire assets for the business is a challenge though we hope things will change with the implementation of the low rate bill

Do you have any upcoming event?

Not for the time being but if we organize any we will let you know.

It is a category 2 micro finance institution and a for-profit organizational in Buea, Cameroon. The company is founded to be a development micro bank—making loans in small amounts widely available to people of the low class (generally perceived as unbankable).

MetroCredit business idea has three different platforms, to provide venture capital services to innovative youth ventures in areas of agriculture, trade and ICTs, provide short & long term business loans to growing businesses, provide an App platform where people can send and receive money on mobile phones and open village banks to help communities

The finance startup is trying to bring micro credits to an under-served population of young farmers and small business entrepreneurs who want to establish their small startup businesses in the community but lack that very small venture capital to start up. In other words they want to build a strong community where financial solution to start up and small business is provided by metro credit thereby fighting poverty in the community. The community targeted is one of the most fertile in Cameroon, so they are kin to making sure small scale farmers will have a day to day contact with finance to buy agro-chemicals and fertilizers for higher productivity. Local farmers that they intend to work with are tomatoes, water melon, maize, sugar can, vegetable farmers.

For example, an educated inspired unemployed young man or woman conceives an idea or project on how he/she can do mass production of tomatoes to sell, preserve and process into paste but does not have the capital to invest in such a profitable seasonal project, that is where MetroCredit come in to make his/her ideas come through by providing small capital or loan to help them finance these projects.
