Buddy comedy ‘Ride Along,’ starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, grossed $12.3 million at movie theaters over the weekend, staying on top for the third week in a row.

<br />
Kevin Hart (l.) and Ice Cube go on patrol in ‘Ride Along.’<br />

In the first five minutes of “Ride Along,” director Tim Story gives us a shootout, a car chase and a massive explosion. So if you’re looking for brainless action, hop in. But if you’re aiming any higher, you’ll probably want to find another ride.

The director seems to assume — probably accurately — that stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart already have enough fans to pack theaters. He lets his leads do what they do and doesn’t bother asking for more.

Ride Along” held off Super Bowl weekend challenges from two chick flicks to stay atop the box office for a third straight week.
Universal Pictures’ buddy comedy starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube raked in $12.3 million, according to studio estimates.

With much of the country focused on Sunday’s Super Bowl, Focus Features’ “That Awkward Moment” and Paramount’s “Labor Day” targeted female audiences.

But “That Awkward Moment,” starring Zac Efron, placed third with $9 million, behind second-place “Frozen,” the Oscar-nominated animated hit that earned $9.3 million.

At $360 million and counting, “Frozen” is now the highest-grossing original animated film of all time.

Animated movie “The Nut Job” placed fourth with $7.6 million.

Lone Survivor” rounded out the top five with an estimated gross of $7.2 million. “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” was sixth with $5.4 million.

Labor Day” placed seventh with $5.3 million.

“Shocked to hear of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s death,” Martin said, before lauding the Oscar-winning actor’s work in “Death of A Salesman.”
“If you missed him as Willy Loman, you missed a Willy Loman for all time.”

Initially, the shock of the news bombarded Twitter.

The Business of Business: Getting a Great Idea off the Ground

Starting a business is hard work. While many entrepreneurs are easily enthused by a potential idea, the logistics of establishing a business plan, completing thorough and informative due diligence and establishing partnerships and supply chains are equally if not more important than the idea itself.

Any new business will inevitably encounter setbacks but being well informed about all aspects of your business will minimise risk and prevent any setbacks from becoming fatal. For budding entrepreneurs with a great idea and the energy to bring it to life, there are a few key things that are absolutely necessary to create a thriving business.

Business Partners

No business is an island. Researching potential partners, suppliers and investors is of the utmost importance to any start-up.

Understanding who the company directors are and what exactly it is that they do is key to understanding just how other businesses work.

Being able to assess other businesses in objective and informed ways enables entrepreneurs to understand various structures as well as the people that contribute to a business’s success. Establishing productive and reliable partnerships for your business will undoubtedly yield great things.

Credit Reports

Anyone trying to establish a new business should be familiar with their own personal credit as well as the credit of any potential partners or suppliers. Finding business credit reports online is easy enough and can provide invaluable information about individuals and businesses that an entrepreneur may be considering as partners or affiliates for a small business. Understanding credit ratings as they apply to both individuals and businesses will ensure that start-ups avoid shady dealings that could compromise valuable funds and negatively affect a business’s reputation.

Market Research

Market research includes information about potential customers as well as the competition. By understanding consumer demographics, entrepreneurs are better able to understand where holes in the market might exist so that business plans can be tailored specifically to filling needs that are not currently being met. Understanding where potential consumers shop, live and earn their livings can inform a number of important decisions for any new business like location, price point and projected traffic. Researching potential competition can also provide valuable insights into consumer behaviour, wider economic trends and marketing tactics.

 Business Plan

The business plan is the document that brings each of these elements (and several others) together into one cohesive vision for the company. This document not only helps guide entrepreneurs moving forward but allows potential investors to share in the vision with the support comprehensive research. There are several business plan templates available online as well as sample documents to use as tools for development. Sourcing and reading business plans for similar types of businesses can help develop both vision and organisation for a start-up as well as a clear methodology and structure for the document itself.

The research stages of a starting a business might seem laborious and at times quite tedious but developing a comprehensive understanding of the professional landscape is vital to any successful business.

Thorough research into potential partners, investors, competition and customers will ensure that start-ups are as well prepared as possible for the road ahead.

Kenya’s Hospitality and Tourism Industry Wants Change in Alcoblow Crackdown Tactic

0

alcoblow

PERAK wants a review of the implementation of alcoblow, a gadget aimed at curbing drunk driving. The body says that it may not achieve the desired objective of reducing road fatalities.

The Pubs, Entertainment & Restaurants Association of Kenya (PERAK) represents members who run and manage major restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues in the country.

“We are keen on partnering with the government in enhancing public awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. However, we strongly feel that the stakeholders including PERAK should have been involved in the process, regulation and implementation of alcoblow,” officials of PERAK led by Nairobi Region Chairman Patrick Muya said at a press briefing in Nairobi today.

They added that the manner in which the alcoblow crackdown was being conducted raised many questions that need to be addressed.

PERAK criticized what they term as selective implementation of alcoblow saying police were only focusing on motorists heading home from entertainment spots.

The association further argues that the problem of high number of road accidents in Kenya cannot be attributed to alcohol alone since there are other major factors such as, road- unworthy vehicles poor road conditions with no markings or speed signs posted; unlicensed drivers or drivers with no proper testing; pedestrians; and driver fatigue.

“Statistics show that most accidents occur during the day and are caused by PSV vehicles, trucks and trailers. Small private cars contribute only 7 percent of total accidents in this country.”

The 0.35 limit that the authorities are using is too general, said the association, Other countries where these gadgets are used have varying limits depending on the driver. PSV drivers, young drivers (18 to 23yrs), newly licensed drivers, truck drivers, professional drivers, experienced drivers; all have different alcohol limits.

There are different alcohol limits also depending on gender, body weight and type of alcohol taken. In The UK, Canada and Switzerland, maximum alcohol levels are at 0.8.

The government re-introduced alcoblow breathalyzers in December last year partly to check rising road carnage especially during the festive season. The gadget measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s breath. It then prints out results and if a driver is found to be above the stipulated threshold may be charged in court with driving under the influence of alcohol.  If found guilty, one may be liable to imprisonment for one year or a fine of Ksh100,000 or both.

Perak is also demanding that the alcoblow initiative be subjected to further discussion among stakeholders.

Samsung Launches World’s Smartest Remote Control

Samsung Electronics has launched the Samsung Smart Control. This is an update of the Smart TV remote control.

“Innovation and design excellence is at the heart of the Samsung Smart Control, combining gesture-recognition with a new button console and touch pad to provide frequent Internet video users with more accurate content selection and faster focus movement,” says Lance Berger, Head of Product Marketing for TV/AV, Samsung Electronics, South Africa.

With the Smart Control, users get to shift between menu items through gestures through the Movie/Drama/App menu listing on the Smart TV screen to select and access their content more accurately by using four directional buttons.

So this is how interesting it is, when accessing content the remote’s touchpad can be used to flip from page to page with a similar motion to turning the pages of a book. This gadget also includes Voice Interaction functionality all you have to do is speak directly at the remote.

The touchpad on the new remote is also over 80 percent smaller than in the 2013 version and has been designed for easier use, including short-cuts to frequently used functions.

The Smart Control also includes separate buttons for “Multi-Link Screen”, which enables users to watch multiple content at the same time on a single screen, as well as “Soccer Mode”, which allows viewers to optimize viewing for soccer programmes with a single button. The new remote also brings up the virtual remote keyboard more easily and quickly.

“The TV remote has continually evolved since its invention, starting as a wired device when first introduced in the 1950s, shifting to wireless, LCD and QWERTY formats, and finally to touch and wheel control. It has also gone through a variety of designs, from classic rectangular to more modern ergonomic curved shapes. As TV functionality and viewing trends change, so should the way the TV is managed. Innovation, voice and motion control, the design and intuitive features of the remote is essential for the complete user experience,” concludes Berger.

Next generation Project Management – understanding the realities

0

RA125491(2)By Anita Potgieter, COO, FOXit.

One of the major hurdles companies face in being able to extract the maximum value from their project management infrastructure and strategies is perception – or, in fact, misperception of project management in practice. It is time to debunk inaccurate theories and expose myths.

The first of these is that only large companies can afford Project Management software. That may have been the case a few years ago, it certainly is not the case now. Today, small and medium sized enterprises can afford to invest.

In the past larger enterprises had to invest hugely in server farms, server licenses and then still pay for each of their employees to use software.

The trend shifted to cloud based solutions a couple of years ago, but the change didn’t stop there.

The “Microsofts of the world” are now hosting their own solutions, which make it cost effective to use and there is no longer the need to have strong infrastructure in order to run project management solutions.

Environments are almost instantaneously provisioned. For an SME the advantage is that there is no real need for an implementation partner – unless there is a requirement for the environment to be configured to suit business needs. If the situation allows for the infrastructure to be used as is until decision makers have sorted out configuration, it will save a lot of money.

Project management roles are changing within companies. These shifts should be not only in the maturity of project managers and the way they conduct their profession on a day-to-day basis, but also in every single function they fulfil.

A second myth is the notion that technology is not important.

The fact is that technology modifications require quick adoption and projects can hardly be planned on the back of a cigarette box anymore.  Project managers today need to be proficient in using technology and it cannot be left to young professionals alone to take advantage of this resource. The need for collaboration will force “the old school” employees to stay with-it.

The demand to manage portfolios instead of just managing stand-alone projects is also on the rise and technology has finally started to catch up.  Third party service providers should, for the foreseeable future, still form part of this booming industry.

A popular myth surrounding project management is that methodologies should stay put.

In today’s fast-paced world, bulky methodologies will not make the cut for businesses to remain agile. Documenting for the sake of having documentation can be seen as waste and only the most critical processes needs to be on black-and-white.

In certain cases it is required that every step of every single process needs to be followed to ensure proven governance, but in other cases companies need to either adapt or die.

The idea that anyone can manage a project team is simply not true.  Although project management skills can be acquired quite easily, additional skill sets are required to effectively manage a project team.  According to Google there are many additional skills that next-generation project managers need to possess, but the following are those that are the most important:

Emotional Intelligence

Screaming, shouting and cursing your team will not motivate them to deliver on time, on budget, within scope and to the set quality.  Without emotional intelligence one cannot build successful stakeholder relationships, deal with difficult team members, manage conflict or avoid emotional breakdowns.

Collaborative Communication

Collaborative Communication is the ability to adapt the way you communicate to suit the audience in a matter that brings cooperation to the table.  Communication stretches further than just speaking.  Because social media continues to be on the rise, the profession will, in time, rely less on direct face-to-face meetings. As a project manager you need to have skills to effectively lead phone meetings/conference calls.  As companies grow, these interactions will also stretch to other countries and this requires the ability to deal with other cultures, languages and mannerisms.

 Flexibility

The project manager has to be flexible and be able to change tactics/methods in response to business needs.

Business Understanding

This is essentially the ability to comprehend the strategy of the company and ensure alignment in the execution of projects.

Analytical Skills

The project manager needs to be able to analyse obstacles and find appropriate ways for dealing with it.

Ethical behaviour

The project manager should have a strong moral and ethical character and the ability to instil trust within the team.

SocialRadar Wants to Give you Real-Time Info About the People Around You

0

Sometimes, you go to an event expecting to meet cool people and grab a drink with them and talk about stuff, but for some weird reasons you just end among strangers and waste the night away getting to know each other.
A new social network dubbed SocialRadar has launched to help you know if your friends are attending that event or not.

A new social network dubbed SocialRadar is set to end this problem,

Founded by Michael Chasen, former co-founder and CEO of e-learning software firm Blackboard which was sold for some $2 billion,

SocialRadar tells you who is there, how you are connected to them, and what they have been up to, instantly you walk into a room, enter a restaurant, attend a conference, or go to an event. The network works by combining a user’s phone’s location info with the chatter from their  social networks (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Instagram, Google+) and is available for the iPhone only, at the moment with plans for an Android and Google Glass apps launching soon.
The company recently secured its Series A funding for $12.75 million led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Grotech Ventures, and SWaN & Legend Ventures, Steve Case, Ted Leonsis, Dave Morin, Kevin Colleran and other leaders in the tech space. Founded in 2013, the company is based in Washington, D.C.

Social+Radar“In five years, there will be 5.6 billion people worldwide using smartphones, continuously broadcasting their location. At the same time, 3.9 billion people have social profiles online said Michael Chasen in a blog post. ” Yet these two essential components of our everyday life operate independently. We didn’t realize it, but this separation, has been depriving us of so many more ways to connect with people we know and people we want to know.”

“Combining these two powerful elements of the digital age will fundamentally and positively change the way people meet and connect. And I’m thrilled to reveal that after months of development, we’ve created technology that does just that.”

SocialRadar gives users real-time information about people around them  and lets users know who is nearby, how they’re connected and what they’ve been up to. It Radar connects users to the information they want but gives users full control over their privacy.

“You can set it to share your info publicly or just with friends. You can be anonymous or even invisible. And you can adjust the settings easily depending on where you are and what would be helpful to you in that circumstance. You are in full control,” says Chasen.

CEO Weekends: Hipmob Wants to Provide Killer Customer Support to Your Mobile Customers

0
215278_165378956962147_599827280_nHipmob,  provides mobile CRM as a service. If you’re an app developer or a business that has mobile app customers, you would use Hipmob to communicate with your users around sales (deals and offers) and customer support. Hipmob was founded by Ayo & Femi Omojola who had built mobile products for about 5 years before starting Hipmob;  to solve a need they faced.
TechMoran caught up with Ayo Omojola and here is what he told us;
What does Hipmob do?
We provide a mobile SDK/Plugin that you put inside your app, and an admin interface you use to communicate with users of that app. You can send them deals, offers, push notifications, and they can query you for help, or search your knowledge base for answers.

What inspired you to launch an IM like offline service and CRM tools for mobile?

We were developing a mobile gaming platform at the time (Flypad) which saw incredibly fast growth. The product was in beta though, with lots of technical challenges to be hammered out and we found ourselves responding to tons of emails and chats from our website. We figured there had to be a better way, and looked around – no one had built one. So we did it ourselves.
Who is your target group? Why mobile?
> If you have a mobile app and you care about your customers, use us. Mobile is what we know best, and it’s the future of the web (mobile devices will outstrip PCs sometime this year).Inline image 1
How do you make work your cut?
We invoice on a combination of seats (number of team members you have using hipmob) and reach (number of customers you communicate with in a given month.
Any clients you are powering already?
SmartThings, DoctorOnDemand, and several others. You can see some in our gallery.
Any local competition in Africa?
Don’t think so.
How unique are you from the competition if present?
We integrate seamlessly into popular business tools such as salesforce, Zendesk and others. Full list here – our implementations are always getting better.
What challenges have you faced? How did you solve them?
Every challenge in the book. Book’s not finished yet 🙂
Any plans to expand out of your country?
We already have customers on pretty much every continent. That being said, we have no plans to open overseas offices just yet.

Have you received any funding yet?

We were in the Winter 2012 batch of YCombinator. Not disclosing funding 🙂

How is the startup environment where you are based?

Being based in Palo Alto – we’re surrounded by startups. It’s a really strong community. Young founders should question their assumptions. All of them.

What could you be doing had you not founded Hipmob?

Most likely solving another mobile problem.

CEO Weekends: Of World’s Best Paid Public Servants Who Can’t Afford iPads

0
IPad_2_Smart_Cover_at_unveiling_cropKenyan MP’s are the world’s best paid, a report by the BBC reported that Kenya’s prime minister (post annulled) earned over a third his British counterpart and almost 10% more than the US president.
The report claims an MP takes home a basic salary of $44,000 a year, plus allowances, an MP can take home up to $126,000 not including the the $370 a day for attending parliament sessions.Apparently, this public servants cant afford their own iPads, so the Kenya’s Parliamentary Service Commission wants bidders for over  40 iPads for its MPs and senior staff costing the government some 350,000 in hardware purchases only minus costs for high-speed Internet connectivity during sessions.

The Kenyan government says the iPads will help save paper, hence trees and the environment . The government uses over 1,000 reams of paper weekly for the National Assembly and the Senate. The tender was done so quickly that by the time we were writing this piece, the bids for the tender had closed.  Though Kenyans went to social media to say anything they felt appropriate, the MP’s are likely following its Ugandan counterparts ordered 375 for their MPs.

Though not so public, the commission approved the purchase of iPads last year December 5 and because the commission is sure most officers dont know how to use them, more money will be spent in training and probably insurance of the gadgets.

He presently focus all his time rendering managerial services to a successful business outfits, Printivo.com.

What inspired you?

We discovered that SMEs and individuals find it hard to handle their print needs, mostly because of their budgets and need for short runs, we also noticed how printers disappoint in areas of quality and on-time delivery, a day to day experience for us dealing with printer vendors at the advert agency. So we decided to find a way to fix it. We started asking questions and discovered Nigerians where already ordering online via non-Nigerian web-2-print stores, not minding the 3 weeks of shipping and delivery. So we said to our selves, if we can fix this problem, deliver good quality and have orders shipped to customers within 3-5 days. We sure have a market. Printivo was born that day, the next week, we got the name registered and the journey started. There was no time to wait.
pntioWhy launch a web-to print platform when everything is going web (Including print)?
Everything is going web. Trends has shown that the web is not here to kill what we do but rather change how we do it and print is not an exception, the web will not stop individuals from printing, it would rather change what we print and how we print. The Nigerian print market is huge, a budding economy  with about 170 million people. If there’s any time to take everyday brick and mortal services online in Nigeria, this is the time and that’s what we are doing with prints. No one can wear a t shirt design on an iPad screen,You’ve got to print. You wouldn’t to tell me to start searching for you on LinkedIn if you got just 1 minute with me in the elevator, you’ve got to hand me a business card. (and even if i don’t call you, you have given me your brand)
What is your business model?
We are helping business and individuals run their print services without having to step out of their houses and offices using the internet. We building a 1 stop online shop for all print needs. One that gives the customer 100% control of his orders.
What are your challenges?
Printing is made of moving parts,  and building an online print store makes it more complex, our work does not end online unlike most other startups. For us, logistics and production is the key factor in our business and running that in a city with less power supply and not to good transport system makes it complex. We had to create our own delivery model for Lagos while other are done via courier companies. Putting all that in place is a challenge for startup that was launched without funding.
Do you have any affiliations or partnerships?
Affiliations and partnerships are already on the way, since we launched we have been contacted by many potential affiliations and partners and talks are already in place. We will be revealing this in the coming weeks and months.
Who is your local competition?
Printmagic and Duduprints.
How unique are you from the competition?
Fast delivery, better templates, more user friendly platform. (Please compare the competitors site with ours for  a proof)

Where do you expect your business to be in 2 years?

We are gunning to build West Africa’s biggest online printing company, starting with Nigeria,West Africa’s economic giants. We believe in 2 years, we should have opened for business in other West African markets

Have you received any funding yet?

No. The startup is running on bootstrapped funding model and it’s own revenue. However, when we receive funding it would be to expand the business, acquire more talents, expand our category of products, and improve on our logistics.

How is the startup environment in Lagos?

The startup environment in Lagos is amazing, it’s where answers to Nigerians everyday challenges are built. Dreams are made here. Anyone who wants to start out here should start small but think BIG

What could you be doing had you not founded Printivo?

Jean Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, Cameroonian Minister of Postal Services and Telecommunications has said the country is working on establishing Internet access points in the country in a move to cut costs involved in the transit through foreign networks which a government study estimated to cost $600 million dollars annually.

Biyit bi Essam told the Cameroon Tribune, “Cameroon needs to have internet access points, because what we’re seeing happening in the virtual world is similar to what is occurring in the area of transportation in real life. When set up, transmission of any communication will no longer need to go over  international networks before reaching users in Cameroon.

The average lifecycle of a car in 2014

0

carmiduwWorldwide spending in the automobile industry and the rising intensity of global competition has triggered an increase in the average lifecycle of cars.

According to a research by Polk carried out in 2013 the average age of vehicles which is 11.4 years is continuously growing. Today new cars are kept for at least 6 years (in comparison to 2003 which was 4 years) before it is handed over to a new owner.

The option to finance used vehicles becoming more of an easy process combined with the public perception that loans for new vehicles remain tight, has fueled a spike in used-car sales.  As a result of nowadays longer life expectancy of a car it has had at the end up to 6 different owners.  Back in the 60s the average driven kilometers of a car counted 160 000km, whereas nowadays car can easily be driven up to 320 000 – 480 000km.

All figures listed are listed below:

  Years ago Today

Miles per car Year 1960: 160 000km 320 000 – 480 000km
Average age of a car Year 2002: 9.8 years 11,4 years
Average ownership of a car Year 2002: 4 years 6  years
Number of owners
of a used car
1-3 owners 1-6 owners

According to Capgemini in 2012 94% (in comparison to 2002 which was 20%) of European car shoppers started their car buying process with online research. There is a huge shift within the consumer buying cycle away from offline purchases at a dealer’s showroom towards taking advantage of e-commerce. This trend, however, will not only take place in the US and in Europe, but will surely spill over to emerging markets in the upcoming years due to the increasing global internet penetration rate.

car-modiStefan Haubold, Co-Founder Carmudi said: “The trend towards second hand vehicles is a global development, which will also continue in the upcoming years. This means the demand for high-quality automotive classified platforms will rise in future as well. At Carmudi we bring buyers and sellers together on a secure and user-friendly online interface that provides the necessary price transparency in order to compare the prices of thousands of vehicles in an easy fashion. With the increasing adoption of online services in all the countries we are currently active in, we expect to see a rapid transition from a more traditional offline market to a thriving online community, benefiting both buyers and sellers.”

Carmudi enables customers to easily find or sell their car, motorcycle or commercial vehicle online. At the same time, vehicle dealers and agents gain a trusted online presence through a personalized webpage. Italy’s Economic Development Deputy Minister Antonio Catricala has said the Italian government is okay with Naguib Sawiris investing into Telecom Italia SpA as a main shareholder if he invests.

The minister was speaking in  Rome following Sawiris’ said  interview on Sunday with Bloomberg that he would invest in the telco. Sawiris in the firmif Telefonica SA (TEF), its biggest shareholder exits and as long as the firm doesn’t sell its Brazilian business Tim Participacoes SA (TIMP3).

Sawiris is not new in the country’s telecom business.  In 2005, Sawiris spent 12.2 billion-euro on Wind which he later sold to VimpelCom Ltd. in 2011. MobileContent Gives Ghana A Greeting Card App

mobile-crm-content-banner

The new Cards Café which has been launched by Ghana’s MobileContent, will give its users a swill time to those who like sending little sweet nothings to their loved ones.

The new electronic greeting cards application allows users to customize cards with pictures, as well as text, voice and video messages and send to their loved ones.

Don’t be late, Cards Café is already available for download on Google Play Store (Android), Blackberry (BB) and Java, and it has a catalogue of greeting cards for Christmas, Birthday, New Year, Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Mothers Day, I love you, I miss you, Congrats and for other occasions.

Each category in the catalogue brings up several options in terms of the design of cards one can choose from, and it also allows the user to customize the card to his/her own preference before sending to the receiver via SMS.

General Manager for Innov8, a subsidiary of MobileContent, Jonny Abdallah said that the app is available for free download, except the normal SMS charge for sending the card, adding that the receiver would usually get SMS in the form of a link to the internet where the card is available for viewing for free.

“The reason for using the SMS platform is because not many people have the app on their phone yet. But once many people download the app, every activity will be brought unto the ‘Cards Café’ platform just like the other web-based messaging platforms and the SMS charge will be eliminated,” he added

The app allows 40 letters for the text message, but plans to increase it to about 160 letters later on. The company also plans to enable the addition of up to 30 seconds of voice and or video recording to cards before forwarding.  The current version of the app allows the user to add text message and or attach pictures for free, but the voice and video attachment features would be at a minimal cost to the user when they come on stream.

“The app allows pre-sending of cards. This means you can send a card either immediately or set a reminder on your phone so the card would be sent on the date you select. So you do not need to commit people’s birthdays and other special dates to memory – just prepare the card and set the date and the app will automatically send the card on the date you set,” said Abdallah.

Study Says Texting Changes The Way We Walk

0

texting

If you are one of those people who fancy texting while you walk, I’ve got news for you, it will alter your posture and balance; says a report from Siobhan Schabrun and colleagues from the University of Queensland.

As you have your fun chatting while you walk, scientists studied the effect of mobile phone use on body movement while walking in 26 healthy individuals. Each person walked at a comfortable pace in a straight line over a distance of approximately 8.5 m while doing one of three tasks: walking without the use of a phone, reading text on a mobile phone, or typing text on a mobile phone. The body’s movement was evaluated using a three-dimensional movement analysis system.

And this was their verdict; Texting, and to a lesser extent reading, modified the body’s movement while walking. In comparison with normal walking, when participants were writing text, participants walked slower, deviated more from a straight line and moved their neck less than when reading text. Although the arms and head moved with the chest to reduce relative motion of the phone and facilitate reading and texting, movement of the head increased, which could negatively impact the balance system.

Texting or reading on a mobile phone may pose an additional risk to safety for pedestrians navigating obstacles or crossing the road.

Dr. Schabrun added, “Texting, and to a lesser extent reading, on your mobile phone affects your ability to walk and balance. This may impact the safety of people who text and walk at the same time.”

Homeland finale: Was the shocking twist the right decision?

0

Homeland ended its third season last year with bleak and brutal finale ‘The Star’, which culminated in the show’s most shocking twist to date.

Homeland season 3 iconic image: Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson, Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, Rupert Friend as Peter Quinn and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody

‘Homeland’: Saul, Carrie, Peter and Brody

After spending most of the season as a fugitive, Brody was publicly executed in Iran after completing his mission for the CIA.

Brody has been a divisive character for the last two seasons, and his death has proved no less polarizing. Many viewers have declared that they will never watch the show again, while others have celebrated the opportunity for Homeland to reinvent itself going into its 4th season.

We wants to hear your views. Was killing off Brody the right move for Homeland?? Will the absence of such a pivotal character give the show a much-needed creative shakeup, or cripple it beyond repair? And while we’re at it, do you believe that he’s really dead?
