South Africa’s Paramount Group Buys Majority Stake In Nautic Africa

0

paramount group

Nautic Africa will soon start seeing more of the Paramonut Group; as the group has purchased a majority stake in Nautic Africa.

Paramount Group is the largest privately owned defense and aerospace company in Africa. It had initially started in the land forces environment before switching to aerospace, this year, with the acquisition of Advanced Technology and Engineering (ATE), which is now Paramont Advanced Technologies.

Started by James Fisher, who is the CEO, Nautic Africa was established in 2008 and provides high-speed, ballistic protected aluminum patrol vessels to the military, Coast Guard and oil and gas communities.

The Executive Chairman of Paramont, Ivor Ichikowitz, said that his company had wanted to move to maritime arena but didn’t want to start from the beginning.

He noted that the biggest threats comes from piracy, theft of marine resources and drug trafficking.

The thought of acquiring Nautic Africa came early 2013, but the formal announcement was made on Thursday.

The acquisition, Ichikowitz said, will combine Paramount’s global market reach and strong track record in Africa with the engineering and design skills of Nautic Africa. This, he continued, will stimulate global demand for Africa’s naval solutions.

The ship builder will be able to leverage off Paramount to strengthen their systems and administrative support, as well as gaining access to markets they could not easily access before.

Nautic Africa recently concluded an R600 million deal to build seven 35 metre multi-role patrol vessels for West African clients and is actively working on new orders. The acquisition will further create jobs in the maritime industry as well as the general defence and systems industry.

The South African Navy (SAN) has expressed a desire for a strong local maritime industry and Fisher is interested in pursuing relationships with the SAN. In order to grow its capabilities, Nautic Africa have partnered with DCNS of France for Project Biro, the acquisition of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV). Austal of Australia has also expressed interest in partnering with the Cape Company.

The Nautic Africa brand will continue to be used for commercial activities, whilst military markets will use the new Paramount Naval Systems brand.

The down side of free Wi-Fi

As the public and private sector strive to deliver internet access to all, Wi-Fi hotspots present a viable solution to the challenge of cost-effectively delivering access to the many. Free Wi-Fi was recently rolled out in parts of Cape Town, for example, with free or low cost Wi-Fi networks intended to be rolled out in lower income residential areas such as Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain too.

While access for all is a commendable goal, there are security risks in extending free and low-cost Wi-Fi access in public places. Frequently, the cost of the service is kept to a minimum by eliminating ‘extras’ – like effective security. In addition, many people who will now be using the internet for the first time as a result of the free access, may not have been informed about the risks of cyber crime, and so could be vulnerable to identity theft, fraud and abuse.

Cyber criminals tend to look for individual, high end victims or launch mass attacks on a large number of low end users. In an inadequately secured free Wi-Fi hotspot, this puts large numbers of new internet users at risk. Those who have not been introduced to the need for anti-virus tools, secure passwords and the risk of phishing are liable to fall victim to even simple social engineering as they embrace the benefits of online banking, shopping and mobile money.

An increasingly common tactic abroad is to remotely lock users’ devices and demand a ‘ransom’ in order for them to access the device again. While this has focused mainly on PCs and laptops in the past, we can expect this practice to move to mobile phones next. There is also the risk of devices being infected with botnets, which are becoming more commonplace. Botnets are extremely difficult to detect, and run in the background, connecting the victim’s device to command and control centres, who can harvest information or use the devices for denial of service attacks or for sending spam. Botnets are also moving from the domain of the PC to mobile devices – typically those running Android.

When more schools begin rolling out tablets and other devices to school pupils, the beneficiaries will also be put at risk once they leave their schools’ controlled Wi-Fi zones and use their devices in unsecured hotspots. They need to be protected from inappropriate content, bullying and abuse.

Education is the most effective tool for countering cyber crime and protecting users. New internet users need to be informed of the risks of identity theft, cyber crime and bullying. The onus is on the public and private sector, as well as the media, to inform people of the dangers online, and outline ways to secure their transactions and avoid falling victim to cyber criminals.

Ideally, the entity rolling out a free Wi-Fi hotspots will ensure that the public network is as secure as possible, even going so far as to enforce safe search on the network, to protect children from inappropriate content. Building Wi-Fi hotspots without ensuring that the users are educated and the networks are as secure as possible would be rather like giving people cars without their needing drivers’ licences – sooner or later, somebody will get hurt.

MoboFree to Launch Black Database of Scammers to Make Online Trading in Africa Safe

0

mobofree_whitebg_transparent

MoboFree – social marketplace with 2.5 million African users has disclosed plans to launch a database of scammers to allow its users check credibility of buyers and sellers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

According to Wilfred Tchasse, co-founder of MoboFree, “MoboFree users upload up to 1000 new classifieds per day in Nigeria only, and only 20-30 % of those ads goes live” – discloses. Others are identified as scam by our special internal algorithm, scam control staff and MoboFree users–volunteers who help to ensure reliability of ads.”

“We noticed that after banishment from MoboFree frauders move to other boards of classifieds and successfully proceed with their business. Such situation makes big harm to all online trading/classifieds ecosystem. People loose trust in online buying and selling as effective and safe way to buy, sell and swap stuff. And what’s the most important – people loose their hardly accumulated savings.” – says Wilfred Tchasse.

“Scammers database” service will be accessible free of charge and will be based on checking phone numbers – when buying or selling something via blind boards of classifieds phone number usually is the only thing which is known for sure.  Usually scammers work in two directions – pretending a seller and pretending a buyer. In the first case buyers loose money and in the second case sellers use their goods. “Scammers database” will help to protect from both categories of frauders. Service will be opened not only for MoboFee users but also for users of other boards of classifieds.

bINu app now free on Etisalat Nigeria

0

Etisalat Nigeria has announced it is offering its subscribers free access to the cloud based bINu mobile application. In a release, it said the offer is valid until December 6, 2013.

“biNu is a cloud based mobile application that works on Java and Android phones to deliver a wide range of content while using a very small amount of data, providing a superior user experience on low-end phones, even with only a 2G (Edge and GPRS) data connection,” Etisalat stated.

The app which has its own social network, email and chat solutions also gives users access to Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Google search and free books.

In an exclusive chat with Jeremy George, biNu’s vice president for Africa, he said the decision to offer users free access to the app was reached in order to address the skepticism of users who are afraid of the app eroding their airtime. He added that the move was also made to get more data users in Nigeria to use the app.

He said: “It was based on the realization that people are nervous of having all their airtime eroded by data costs, and the need to get more people using data.”

He noted that while the company is consolidating on its areas that work well, it believes that the offer on Etisalat network would be successful if the campaign is well promoted.

“The success is dependent on how well they publicize this. If people don’t know about it, then it will make no difference. I am working with Etisalat to try and get the message out there,” he said.

Nigeria Turns To New Technology to Fight Polio

0

Nigeria is the world’s last three countries where polio is endemic. But some new technology has seen the polio figures drastically drop in a few months note medics running a door to door immunization project in remote parts of the country.

According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Nigeria had 51 out of 328 cases of the disease worldwide this year 2013, a drastic drop from 121 out of 223 in the past one year.

The drop has been attributed to the use of state of art technology and phone tracking of volunteers that administer the vaccine all viewed from a computer screen, especially in areas like Nigeria’s northern Kano state that reports high polio figures. Yet, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan are the world’s last three countries where polio remains endemic. Thus, they have been the focus of efforts to eradicate the disease of which reports say has incidents have risen in Somalia and Syria.

Nevertheless, while the phone-tracking idea is the brainchild of the World Health Organization (WHO), the billionaire Microsoft founder and his wife’s charitable foundation is helping to fund the four-year project.

Given the high cost of the tracking project, the Gates Foundation have focused on 40 high-risk areas in eight northern states. Kano state has been highly targeted due to its high prevalence of polio suspicious beliefs and controversies about immunization programs. However, a number of teams are more often than ever, going door-to-door to immunise every child aged under-five, as part of an aggressive push to eradicate the debilitating disease.

Through the screen of this state of art technology, medics can track which homes have received the vaccine. On the screen, yellow electronic dots appear on the satellite maps of each of Kano’s six target districts each time a vaccination team stays at a location for more than two minutes, while green horizontal and vertical grid lines divide an area into squares, with each box representing a house. In one section, the screen shows that only half of the houses were visited despite a succession of yellow dots on the Google Maps software, reports say.

Laboratory analysis both in and outside Nigeria confirmed the vaccine was safe and incidents of quacks and falsified data would be reduced, thanks to phone tracking using state of art technology.

With renewed awareness and support by local political leaders, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan said that there was no reason as to why polio could not be wiped out in a year’s time.

Malawi’s Newborn Babies’ Respiratory Distress Device Receives Innovation Award

0

The Malawian “bubble” Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or bCPAP that helps babies in respiratory distress has made it to one of the five projects from a list of nearly 100 applications from 29 countries across the developing world, that has just earned the highest fund in the first GSK and Save the Children $1million Healthcare Innovation Award.

The organisation behind the innovation and recipients of a $400,000 share of the $1 million award is Friends of Sick Children, Malawi – a partnership between the pediatric department of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, Rice 360°: Institute for Global Health Technologies in the United States and the University of Malawi College of Medicine.

While newborn mortality rates have been a challenge in the developing world in which three million babies died in their first 28 days of life in 2012, The life-saving kit, ‘bCPAP’, has been designed to help babies in respiratory distress, which is often caused by acute respiratory infections like pneumonia. CPAP devices use air pressure to keep patients airways open, and as there are few wall-mounted air supplies in Malawi hospitals, the newly innovated bCPAP air pump works on its own. It’s also made of durable materials that are inexpensive and easy to repair.

The judging panel of experts from the fields of public health and development,  co-chaired by Sir Andrew Witty, CEO of GSK, and Justin Forsyth, Chief Executive of Save the Children,  were impressed with the bCPAP device’s impact on tackling newborn deaths, and the associated comprehensive training and education programme on premature child-care.

“Despite huge progress being made in under-five mortality in the past ten years, there hasn’t been the same progress made in the number of newborn babies dying in poor countries in the first 28 days of life,” said Chief Executive of Save the Children, Justin Forsyth,  “This is an area that needs urgent attention, so it is heartening that all five winning innovations from this award concentrate on the area of newborn care.  It is also inspiring to see countries finding solutions to their own challenges and partnering with other countries in the developing world to replicate and champion new innovations.”

Despite a similar version is already commonly used in developed countries where they cost at least $6,000 each this innovative low-cost ‘bubble’ CPAP adaptation can be produced for approximately $400.

Moreover, the funding from the Healthcare Innovation Award, along with backing from the Ministry of Health in Malawi, will mean use of the device can be replicated and expanded to Tanzania, Zambia and South Africa of which, is likely to reduce child mortality rates.

Exited about receiving the award, The Friends of Sick Children, Malawi and the bCPAP team said that the award money would help them replicate and begin scaling up their programme across Africa, ensuring that they reach and save even more children’s lives.

“We are delighted to be the recipients of the first GSK-Save the Children Healthcare Innovation Award,” the team said, “To be recognised for the work that we do and to hopefully inspire others around the world is an honour.”

Kenya to install CCTV on its border with Somali to keep away Al Shabaab

0

Surveillance_cameras Kenya is set to install a CCTV surveillance system on its border with Somali in a move to curb insecuity and terrorism suchas the magnitude of Westgate siege, Interior and Coordination of National Government, Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Ole lenku has said.

Speaking to CNN’s Nima Elbagir on Monday, Ole Lenku admitted that the incredibly porous, 800Kilometres Kenya-Somali border was a major ‘panya’ route for terrorists especially the Al Shabaab drawn from Somalia and hence the planned technological measures to keep them out of Kenya.

“The border is a major security concern as the points of entry are far too many. We are working on a surveillance system to show what is happening in the entire borderline. We are also putting up a command and control system that provides CCTV surveillance for the cities and also the border,” Ole Lenku told Nima during the interview.

However, the somali border CCTV surveillance might be a miss.

When asked about the network that was behind the Westgate attack and how much it was regional network, Ole Lenku explained, “There are a number of theories that are being put together. There’s the Entebbe theory telling how there is a movement that came to Kenya, went to Entebbe and then came back.”

“Forensic investigations are underway to ascertain reports that the Al Shabaab network that attacked Westage originally landed in Entebbe and then came over the border from Uganda.”

Ole Lenku also blamed corrupt security officers as a major setback to security adding that integrity will be a major consideration when recruiting new police officers going forward.

“People are noticing that there’s a new requirement for service in terms of integrity and that those who will not meet that threshold will not be allowed into their service,” he said adding on that the vetting process for police officer which began last week, will see a number of corrupt officers removed from the system.

The vetting exercise for police officers is being carried out because corruption has been a loophole and an avenue for insecurity according to Ole Lenku.

Asked what he would have done differently, Ole Lenku said, “We have a number of lessons learned from this Westgate attack. One of it is to synchronise the activities of our intelligence, our military and our police: a common standard operating procedure for the forces of the country is being worked on.”

“We are strengthening our response to disaster, and we got a lot of support from well-wishers, some specific country like Israel, Germany, the US and British have come in,” he said.

Standard Bank Remakes Its Banking Halls

0

standard bank

Banking has switched gears and there fewer queues in the banking hall because a good number of the customers are now using their phones as banking halls.  Well, one can be allowed to think that in years to come all bank building will be eliminated and banking will involve customer and phone.

Contrary to what is expected Standard Bank has launched its new Generation 8 branches in selected markets with new technology and a new look-and feel based on updated branch layout principles.

For any bank to engage in bank renovation could be making a dangerous risk because this facilities are to be faced off pretty soon, but standard bank doesn’t consider this as a risk, in fact the bank thinks that the traditional method of banking will still be alive in Kenya, therefore to make sure that their customers have the best of everything they are making a mega transformation in their banks.

This renovation the bank says will provide a new generation of services which give positive, smart, value-added experiences to “connected” customers.

“Branches are still vital for interacting with our customers and developing long-term human relationships,” says Hannah Sadiki, head of customer channels at Standard Bank. “So we’ve created a banking experience that will deliver on their expectations, improve their interaction with our staff and provide enhanced value-added services in-branch for them to interface with while they wait.”

The first Gen 8 branches in service include Woodlands Boulevard in Pretoria and Bedford Centre in Bedfordview. The Alice Lane Branch in Sandton, and branches at the V&A Waterfront and Constantia Village, both in Cape Town, are due to open this month. Another three will be open by the end of this year, and an additional two to three next year.

So what is it about this renovation;

  •  A modern, warmer look and feel
  • Smart positioning of furniture, equipment and signage
  • Better positioning of staff, who have been trained to visually identify clients in need of assistance and improve queue management;
  • Seating innovations in the waiting area;
  • Self-service banking in waiting areas that have wireless connectivity
  • Given the rapid evolution of technology, smart, modular design has been incorporated to allow for the integration of new devices without having to reconstruct the entire space.

MOBILE BANKING

Mobile banking in Kenya has proved to be a force to reckon with,  because at this rate no bank can afford not to have this application in their program. In light to this, the Equatorial Commercial Bank (EBC) has this morning launched its new mobile banking platform which they called ‘GoMobile’.

‘GoMobile’ is an innovative  mobile banking solution that allows EBC customers access the full range of banking services in their mobile phones. Musuni said that GoMobile app will give ECB’s customers security, easy access and more control of their finances with the click of a few buttons. This platform, he said, will help the bank understand the way their customers make monetary transactions therefore which will help them come up with innovative ways to offer excellent customers care services.

With this account the customers can access services such as EBC inter account transfers, transfers to  other banks, Mpesa and Airtel money transfers, loans insurance requests, loan repayments, airtime topup, bankers cheque request (this is only usable to people with smartphones), bill payments (which includes KPLC Postpaid, Zuku, Nairobi water  and DSTV).

Today, online gaming platform Kuluya, has said it has entered an exclusive partnership with Nokia to bring its games onto the Nokia Windows store for Asha and Lumia devices begining with its popular game Oga @ The Top. which had an over 60,000 plays in just 72 hours of its release.

Oga @ The Top was developed in lightening speed in the wake of the viral interview and PR gaffe from a senior Nigerian civil servant who was unable to tell an interviewer the website he wanted to promote. The Oga @ The Top case resonated with millions of Nigerians and inspired spin-offs including video remixes, blog posts, t-shirts, as well as Kuluya’s online game.

The Nokia deal is a win-win for both as it will see Kuluya’s games reach more players and also strenghthen Nokia content offerings.

Speaking on the new Nokia partnership, Kunle Ogungbamila, Head of Kuluya said, “We know that gaming will explode across the continent of Africa, just as it has in the West, usurping other forms of entertainment to become a multi-billion dollar generating industry. We also know that mobile is the prominent platform for content distribution in Africa, be it movies, news, music and, in this instance, gaming, so we see this partnership with Nokia as the beginning of an exciting and mutually beneficial content / platform relationship of the future.”

Kunle added that Nokia users will have the same dynamic user experience on their Asha or Lumia devices just as its on its own platform.

Nokia believes that as Africa’s youth continues to come online, with approximately 65% of the population under the age of 35, content partnerships such as this one aim to connect with this burgeoning online community.

Emmanuel Oluwatosin, Partner Manager, Nokia, West Africa, said: “Africa is a continent with great potential across all sectors. We are excited at the fact that the youths are looking inwards and taking advantage of the opportunities that are in abundance. Kuluya is leading the way in this regard and we are happy to work with them in providing great games for our consumers.”

Launched in October 2012, Kuluya develops cross-platform games with African characters as the focus.  The firm has launched 55 casual games and five mobile games since then. Just six months after its launch, Kuluya received a seed round that raised its value to $2Mn.

The Oga @ The Top game is available to download for free on the Nokia Windows Phone and for the Nokia Asha

Uganda Forensic Lab in Near Collapse

Forensic lab

The Acting Commissioner Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratory (DGAL), Eric Atalao Dradrio has said that the machines for forensic investigations have broken down or expired due to lack of maintenance on them.

An article appearing in New Vision has detailed that the country’s forensic investigations could come to a halt anytime soon if nothing is done to repair and maintain the machines.

The commissioner revealed this information as he appealed to the members of parliament to consider increasing funding to the laboratories.

“Sometime we don’t have money to periodically service these machines,” Atalao said.

One problem that faces the laboratory is having old equipment. Some of the manufactures do not manufacture their spare parts anymore as the technology evolves.

Such outdated technology has forced the forensic department to still send samples to other countries such as India and South Africa.

The story is similar to neighbouring country Kenya, where the project to set up a modern forensics lab was engulfed in the Anglo Leasing scandal. This has stalled progress on establishing a laboratory in the country. But there are still efforts to establish one in Kenya.

Nigerian SMEs save 50% development cost on U-Mall – Netplus Advisory

1

Nigerian small and medium-scale enterprises save about 50% of development costs when they are on U-Mall, a platform developed by Netplus Advisory in partnership with United Bank for Africa (UBA).

In an exclusive chat, Wole Faroun, Managing Director of Netplus Advisory said the platform was developed to provide comprehensive e-commerce solutions to Nigerian businesses.

“With the online channel becoming increasingly adopted by consumers in Nigeria, it has become a viable channel for business however most businesses are unable to effectively take advantage due to cost and technical know-how hence the need for a solution like U-Mall,” he said.

In addition to saving costs in development, he said the turnaround time is also shorter as the platform is set up immediately.

“On timing, getting them setup is immediate – matter of minutes versus weeks/months it takes to setup an e-commerce website. On marketing spend the savings is around N100K per month for anyone really trying to be successful online. There are similar savings for logistics/order fulfillment/customer service. These are all taking care of on behalf of the merchant,” he said.

He added that the number of businesses on the platform is increasing.

He said: “We got over 100 businesses in the first week of launch. It’s been increasing ever since – but because of KYC involved, it takes time for the actual site to be made available to customers. The bank needs to do verification of the businesses.”

The schools include the Government Secondary School Jabi in Nigeria, the Agha Khan Academy in Kenya, Gayaza High School in Uganda and SARM State Secondary School in Mauritius. The four were chosen from over 250 global applicants in 80 countries to participate in the one year programme which recognise visionary educators using technology to improve student outcomes and equip them with 21st century skills.

According to Djam Bakhshandegi, Director of Corporate Citizenship and Partners in Learning, West East, Central Africa & Indian Ocean Islands,“At Microsoft, we strongly believe in the role that well-prepared educators play in helping today’s youth overcome the emerging opportunity divide and guiding them toward the education, skills and opportunities they need to prosper in the hyper-connected era.”

The company has also signed an agreement with the University of the People to offer 1, 000 free scholarships to Africans as part of the 4Afrika Initiative.
