Bad Habits to Break that Will Ruin Your Smartphone

0

Has the lifespan of your smartphone fallen short of what you expect? Here are five things you are likely doing incorrectly and suggestions for correcting your bad habits.

Failure to Use a Case or a Good Warranty

Although a caseless phone may have a cleaner appearance, the danger is simply not worth it because even little chips and cracks can compromise the structural integrity and increase the likelihood of major damage.Additionally, when you decide to sell your iPhone or Android phone before upgrading in the future, those minor chips and cracks can completely ruin the phone’s resale value.

Frequently draining your battery

After a few years, the maximum battery life of a phone won’t be as high as it was when the gadget was brand new because phone batteries degrade with time. Although these things are unavoidable, unhealthy habits can hasten cell death by accelerating battery deterioration. You shouldn’t run your phone down to 0% all the time; instead, you should drain it shallowly on a regular basis and recharge it before it runs out of power.

Purchasing cheap cables (and handling them poorly)

Let’s start with the most explosive way to break your phone: using subpar charging cables from unknown brands. I’m not referring to products from reputable brands like Anker or those with the Made For iPhone label, but rather to the generic USB cords you could get at the corner shop for $1.

Many of these cables have the potential to permanently harm your devices, or even worse, put you at risk of electrocution or fire. Savings in the near term are not worthwhile: Buy chargers from a reputable manufacturer. Once you have high-quality cables, take good care of them.

Too Many Selfies in the Water

Despite what some advertisements may claim, there is no such thing as a really “waterproof” device. Although some gadgets may be more water-resistant than others, there is always a likelihood that water will get inside. Additionally, the more water your device is exposed to, the less water-resistant it becomes.

Not Practicing Good Security

Too many people are eager to sacrifice security for instant delight. Updates to software are one example. Although they may seem unimportant and uninteresting, those “security” patches that show up on your phone might actually shield it against malware and other major problems. Don’t delay them. As they frequently include comparable bug fixes and security upgrades that keep you safe, make sure your apps are updated as well.

E-Commerce Marketing & Promotion Trends For 2023 & Beyond

0

E-commerce has become one of the most popular ways to do business online, with new entrepreneurs and established companies taking to the Internet to make money. With websites hosting online stores for no extra cost, it has become a favorite in both developed and developing nations. In Africa alone, e-commerce is expected to reach a $567 billion market value. There are many trends and strategies that newcomers can take advantage of to find success online – here are a few of them.

Offers & Promotions

First is a strategy that will never go out of style – offers and promotions. This is where a store or service asks for less money, or sometimes nothing at all when giving out their product. Discounts, bundles, and free offers have been around for decades and will be around after the 2020s have ended.

The internet has made it easier to host these promotions, which can attract new customers. For ideas, check out how the pros do it in other businesses. Amazon, the largest e-commerce site of them all, offers free Prime subscriptions for a month. Likewise, other online industries like iGaming give free test periods to customers, where they can test games and see if they like them. Online casino promotions can range from free spins, deposit bonuses, or free shots at a daily jackpot, all geared towards showing their selection of games to new customers. Impressed customers will stick around, though they may never have interacted with the brand if they didn’t host free promotions.

E-commerce sites can learn a lot from these tried-and-tested strategies.  These strategies can often turn temporary visitors into permanent clients if they like what’s being sold. The top e-commerce websites make it easy to start a discount for products or a free test period for an online service. No matter which you sell, you should run offers & promotions periodically to drive new interest in your brand.

Mastering SEO

In today’s age, the success of an online business doesn’t just depend on impressing customers. For your store to show up in search results, it needs to rank highly with Google. To make your site more appealing, you’ll need to practice Search Engine Optimization – SEO. Think of it as promoting yourself to Google, so that they’ll show your store to everyone.

Google isn’t going anywhere in the next decade, neither is internet search, so becoming familiar with SEO is a worthwhile investment in your company. Fortunately, you can learn most of what you need to know for free online. When a site ranks highly with Google or any other search engine, it’ll attract more customers who often click on the first links they see. So, through optimization, businesses can rake in thousands more views, clicks, and possibly conversions.

SEO is a great equalizer when it comes to online business. Large brands will always have an advantage due to their big names, and many spend lots on SEO, but it’s possible for smaller businesses to outcompete them in some areas if their SEO profile is superior. Most would recommend finding a niche and fulfilling it, finding profit in a less competitive space.

Smartphone Marketing

Most web traffic comes from mobile devices, a lot of which include search queries for products and services just like yours. Going forward, every business should try to maximize its engagement and compatibility with smartphones and tablets. A subset of SEO – mobile SEO – exists just for this.

Gone are the days of cold calling and other mobile marketing strategies, now many customers find e-commerce stores through social media. Your business should also be on social media too, either through advertisement or through content creation on those platforms. Uploading posts, pictures, and video content can advertise your product/service while building a community interested in what you’re selling – a great way to get repeat business.

A modern e-commerce business should embrace traditional promotional tactics while filtering them through mobile content, all optimized for search. That way, you can please customers, find new customers through mobile platforms, and rank highly in their searches. These three approaches are so fundamental for modern marketing that they won’t change much in the next decade.

Innovative developments signal new era for random number generation

0

Random number generation is one of the unsung heroes of many industries, critical for ensuring security, safety, and fairness of use. What actually is it, and what do new innovations signal for the future? Let’s take a look.

What is random number generation?

Random number generation is the process of generating random numbers using a random number generator (RNG). RNGs can be leveraged in a wide range of applications – from cryptography to internet security, theoretical research, and even in entertainment. Take online casinos, for example. In a brick-and-mortar casino, players roll a dice, flip a coin, spin a wheel, or a dealer shuffles the cards for their hand. To mirror this element of chance, an online casino might use an RNG instead for the same purpose, which selects cards, winning symbols, the placement of a roulette ball, and bingo calls to preserve the fairness and authenticity of the games offered.

There are two main types of RNGs:  true random number generation (TRNG), which typically utilizes hardware random number generators (HRNGs), and pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs). Put simply, HRNGs function in a constantly changing environment, which is nigh-on impossible to calculate. On the other hand, PRNG sequences are generated using a specific function, and so merely appear as random. That said, both HRNGs and PRNGs are tested against a standard of statistical randomness before being deployed to ensure they are unpredictable enough for their intended usage.

Now that you know the basics of what RNGs are, let’s take a look at some innovative technological developments in the industry.

New era of RNGs

As we mentioned, PRNG sequences may appear random, but are actually pre-determined. Though some cryptographic PRNGs do exist, PRNGs are largely considered unsuitable for this purpose. That said, TRNG can be extremely difficult, as randomness cannot truly be captured by a mathematical formula. That’s what a group of researchers with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology aimed to solve, announcing a TRNG made from a printable electronic circuit that has been hailed by some as the key to cryptography.

Source: Pixabay

The circuit is inkjet printed using a technique called memristors. The first of its kind, the memristor fabrication holds similarities to 3D printing, and creates TRNGs that have lower energy consumption and higher stability than its predecessors, generating 7 million random bits per second, which could be revolutionary for complex micro- and nanoelectronics.

Others, however, have taken another approach to RNG technology, integrating it with the advancements in quantum computing. Put simply, quantum computing leverages the rules of quantum mechanics to solve more complex calculations more quickly and efficiently. Whilst in traditional computing, numbers have to be either 0 or 1, in quantum computing they could be 0 and 1 simultaneously.

This has led to a new range of RNGs – quantum random number generators (QRNGs). QRNGs leverage the multiplicity and indeterminacy of quantum mechanics in an attempt to generate numbers that are authentically random, using single-photon detection technology and entangled photons. That said, if an input source had any error, this could eliminate randomness completely, hence a movement towards source-device-independent QRNGs which have been proposed to have been tested and ready for practical quantum security applications in the future.

As you can see, modern technological developments are consistently pushing RNGs to new heights, challenging the protocols to be as random as possible. These techniques and innovations have the potential to transform RNGs, their consistency, sustainability, and accuracy going forward.

Simplest Ways to Boost Windows

0

The issue with many guides on how to speed up Windows is that they advise you to disable some of the more enticing components of the operating system, such visual animations. The majority of our advice demonstrates how to speed up your Windows system while maintaining its good looks and usefulness. Most can be done for free, but some involve spending a little cash on software or hardware. A number of the suggestions you’ll discover at the end of this article do improve system performance at the sacrifice of visual bling for folks with older, low-power machines who desire a speed boost but don’t care about extra luxuries.

Keep in mind that those “Speed Up Your PC!” adverts for registry cleaners should be avoided because they frequently lead to malware. Registry cleaners are categorically not supported by Microsoft when used with Windows.

Remove crapware

Uninstall can be selected by right-clicking on any unwanted app icon in Start. The software will be promptly uninstalled if you do this. You can also select the top option, Programs and Features, by performing a right-click on the Windows logo Start button. Alternately, just put “Programs” into the search bar located next to the Start button.

You can usually find crapware culprits by sorting the list of installed apps on the name of your PC maker. Other useful options include sorting by Size or Recent to get rid of extra-large items you don’t need and discover programs you didn’t realize you installed. Choose the unwanted garbage apps you find and click Uninstall to remove them.

The fact that many programs launch processes at boot time and consume important RAM and CPU cycles is one reason why eliminating apps improves speed. You can also click Turn Windows Features On or Off while you’re in the Programs and Features section of Control to look through the list and see if there are any features you don’t use.

Reduce startup procedures

By hitting Ctrl-Shift-Esc, you can open the Task Manager with the most ease. All of the programs that start up with Windows are visible when you select the Startup tab. Even a column in the dialog box that displays each option’s influence on startup is there. The Status column indicates whether or not the software is set to launch automatically. If you want to change this status, right-click any entry. Typically, it’s not too difficult to see things you don’t want to miss. For instance, if you almost ever use iTunes, iTunesHelper generally doesn’t need to be running constantly.

Get Your Disk Clean

To launch the dependable tool that has been a part of Windows for multiple OS iterations, type Disk Cleanup into the Start menu. Disk Cleanup claims to erase any undesirable items found on your computer, including temporary files, offline web pages, and installer programs. Even if your recycle bin is bulging at the seams, that normally only slows your drive down noticeably if it is almost full.

Increase the RAM

Although Windows 10 and 11 both manage memory more effectively than prior OS versions, adding extra RAM can always speed up computer activities.

But not everyone has the option to add RAM, so not everyone can apply this advice. It’s simply not doable with some of the Windows devices available today, including the Surface Pro tablets. The ability to update RAM is still common on business and gaming laptops, although it is vanishingly rare. Most of the time, the newest, smaller ultrabooks and convertibles have fixed memory.

Add an SSD Startup Drive.

With an SSD, installing and executing demanding programs like Adobe Photoshop happens significantly faster. The startup of Windows is also substantially enhanced by an SSD. The Apps and Features page in Settings makes it simple to transfer apps from the Microsoft Store to an SSD.

It makes sense to replace your internal startup hard disk for system speedup, and if you use a laptop, this might also be a choice for you. However, apps that require a lot of storage can benefit from a speed increase from an external SSD with a USB 3.0 connection.

Do a virus and spyware check

You can use the built-in Windows Defender or a third-party app to scan for viruses and spyware, but it’s preferable to use one of the top malware removal tools that PCMag’s lead security researcher Neil Rubenking has evaluated. Use continuing antiviral protection as well, don’t forget. Different goods among them have different effects on system performance. For more information, see our comprehensive list of the top antivirus programs. Try MalwareBytes Free, as seen above, or just use Windows’ free built-in Microsoft Defender malware scanner if you’re hesitant to pay for anti-virus software.

Set Best Performance instead of Power Mode.

The high performance power setting on your computer may increase computing speed, but it will also use more electricity. Go to System > Power & Sleep in the Settings app, and then hit the Additional Power Settings link. From here, select High Performance by clicking the Show Additional Plans drop-down arrow on the right-hand side.

In Settings > System > Power & Battery on Windows 11, you may choose between Better Performance and Best Performance. As with Windows 10, there is no requirement to select Show Additional Plans. Windows 11 also recently implemented features in this panel intended to further the company’s push towards environmental friendliness, with energy-saving suggestions.

Activate troubleshooters

Search for troubleshoot by selecting the Start button. You can opt to execute the troubleshooting tools recommended by Windows automatically or manually. Run the additional troubleshooters, such as Hardware and Devices, Windows Store Apps, and Search and Indexing, just to be safe.

Also, go to the old-style Control Panel. Click the Start button and enter “Control Panel” to launch it on either OS version. Enter maintenance in the Start menu search box or navigate to the System > Security > Security and Maintenance tab, click Maintenance, and then select Start Maintenance. You can alter the time it runs each day, and it happens automatically.

Alternate Performance Options’ Appearance

Use the radio button labeled Adjust for best performance at the top of the dialog or choose from the extensive list of check boxes below these selections which eye-catching features you can live without. You lose all the visual effects if you select the overall best-performance button. For instance, while dragging a window to move it, you won’t see the contents of the window; instead, you’ll just see a rectangle that represents the window’s edges. It’s probably best to keep the effects that you like checked in the dialog.

Deactivate search indexing

Open the Indexing Options Control Panel window to disable indexing (you can alternatively just enter “index” in the Start button search field to see Indexing Options at the top of the list of results). Uncheck any locations you don’t want indexed by clicking Modify. To make wise decisions, you’ll probably need to uncollapse the files inside of your user folder. You can select which file types should and shouldn’t be indexed by selecting Advanced.

Deactivate tips and notifications

To modify the notification settings, just access the Notifications page in the Settings app. With a switch at the top, you can simply turn off all notifications, but you’ll also see a list of specific apps that can send alerts; uncheck the ones you don’t want to hear from. If you have a lot of them, browse the list; you’ll undoubtedly identify sources from which you don’t need to receive notifications. Even just your sense of how quickly you use your PC might be accelerated by the reduction in distractions. Tap the Do Not Disturb button at the top of the Notification right-sidebar to quickly pause notifications. This approach also makes things simpler.

Use game mode and other features, gamers

Game Mode is a feature included in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that performs a few things to enhance performance while you’re playing PC games. According to Microsoft documentation, it “helps achieve a more stable frame rate depending on the specific game and system.” It also limits background processes, pauses notifications, prevents the PC from updating the OS while you’re playing, and limits background tasks and notifications. For games that are found, it is activated by default. Be aware that results in performance tests conducted online for various games and hardware configurations vary, so you might want to try turning the mode off to discover which approach yields the best performance.

How to Make Google Chrome Respond Faster

0

Does it seem like your Chrome browser is operating more slowly than usual? You may increase the speed of Google Chrome by using these tips and tricks.

When Chrome becomes sluggish, it might impact both your personal and professional internet experience. Here are some methods to speed up your browser so that it won’t slow you down.

Do Your Due Diligence

Make sure your internet connection is reliable before criticizing Chrome.

Speed Test To determine how your connection performs, start by running a speed test on PCMag’s platform or Speedtest.net.

Real-Time Outages

For real-time outage monitoring, check Downdetector if a website is still not loading. You can find out if other people have encountered the same problem or if it is unique to “you” there. You may be experiencing a localized snag or being connected to a subpar public network. Maybe it’s simply time to spend money on faster internet.

Update Google Chrome

Every new release of Chrome comes with brand-new features, security updates, and frequently speed enhancements. Therefore, updating to the most recent version might solve your speed issues. It will keep you safer from threats online even if it doesn’t.

When a new version of Chrome becomes available, it automatically upgrades; updates normally take place in the background when you close and reopen the browser. You may see a pending update in the top-right corner of Chrome if you haven’t closed it in a while:

  • Green: Update released less than two days ago
  • Orange: Update released about four days ago
  • Red: Update released at least a week ago

When you click the Update button next to the three-dot More menu, your browser will restart as soon as you provide it permission to do so. (If prompted, choose Not now; updates will be applied the following time you open Chrome if you’d prefer not to restart straight away.)

You can manually trigger an update and determine which version of Chrome you’re using by checking:

  • Launch Chrome
  • the “More” button (three vertical dots)
  • Select Help. Regarding Google Chrome
  • You can determine whether Chrome is current or whether it needs to be updated here. Chrome ought to start downloading the most recent version of the browser automatically and then ask you to activate it again. If your browser is out-of-date, you might also notice a button to update Google Chrome.
  • Choose Relaunch.

Run a malware check

Instead of wasting time through Chrome’s settings, simply scan your computer for malware. Use your preferred program to run an anti-malware scan and check to see if anything suspicious is operating in the background. Specifically: Look for anything shoving extra ads onto the pages you visit or tracking online behavior. Because it uses more resources, this kind of malware might make your browser and machine slower.

Upgrade Chrome’s security

In the past, Google created the Chrome Cleanup Tool, a program that aids in locating and removing unwanted software (UwS), such as toolbars and other automatically installed extensions that antivirus scans could miss, from Windows machines.

Google also claims that even though the service was discontinued earlier this year, users will still be “automatically protected” by Safe Browsing in Chrome and its Enhanced protection features. To switch from Standard protection to Enhanced Protection, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Security. Enhanced Protection provides “faster, proactive protection against dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions, [and] warns you about password breaches.”

Trim the Fat

If you believed it would be simple, we have some bad news for you: In order to browse the web more quickly, sacrifices must be made. While the aforementioned advice might be useful to some, slimming down Chrome is the best thing anyone can do to speed it up. The less extensions and tabs you have, the quicker Chrome will feel because they are the largest resource hogs.

Extensions Use the Task Manager to see which extensions use the most CPU and RAM:

  • open the More menu in Chrome (top right corner, three vertical dots)
  • Choose “More tools”
  • Toggle Task Manager on.
  • Search for items beginning with “Extension”

By tapping the heading at the top until a downward arrow appears, you can sort tasks from highest to lowest in terms of memory footprint or CPU. Check which extensions are taking up the most room on the list and decide if you actually need them.

To uninstall:

  • Click the puzzle-piece symbol in the top right to reveal the Extensions menu.
  • Next to the extension you want to remove, select the three-dot menu. Uninstall out of Chrome
  • To manage extensions, click. select Remove.

You’ll experience an increase in performance as you erase more data. (Not to mention an increase in security, given that extensions might be compromised or sold to adware firms.)

Tabs

There are two types of people in the world: Those who open just a few tabs at a time, and those who hoard tabs like they’ve never heard of bookmarking. If you fall into the latter category, it’s likely what’s slowing you down.

Depending on how many tabs you typically keep open, the outcome can still be a net speedup.

Clean Up the Slate

If Chrome still won’t comply, it might be necessary to restore the browser to its factory settings. No add-ons, unique search engines, or other saved settings are thus available. Reset settings by selecting Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their preset values.

Sure, losing years of effort is painful. The good news is that after a hard reset, Chrome should revert to being its speedy self. (Therefore, maintaining a clean browser is the issue.)

In 2024, using Vision AI technology, Samsung Food will use photos taken of meals to check nutritional information, recognise ingredients and recommend the best recipes to use them in.

These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too. Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption.

SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70% by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm.

Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said, “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber™ Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.”

Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the Galaxy Watch6 series incorporate post-consumer recycled plastics. All of these Galaxy innovations come in packaging boxes made using recycled paper material.

Samsung understands the reassurance that smart technology can provide across the generations. Security was an emerging theme from the research conducted. Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology.

UAE-based Web3 gaming platform GAM3S.GG raises $2 million to scale its superapp

0

UAE-based Web3 gaming platform GAM3S.GG, has secured a $2 million Seed funding round aimed to scale and grow its superapp.

The round was led by Mechanism Capital with the participation fromPolygon, Double Peak, ArkStream Capital, LD Capital, ROK Capital, Hyperithm, Snackclub, Emurgo Ventures, Eden Ventures, Mix Marvel Ventures, 4SV, CommonWealth Capital, Venly Ventures, TKX Capital, SkyVision Capital, Compute Ventures and MarketAcross, as well as several angel investors in the Web3 gaming space.

“Web3 games are a uniquely difficult product to build, let alone the infrastructure surrounding and enabling it. This holds especially true for gaming hubs and aggregators.” Said Ken, Partner at Mechanism Capital.

Founded in 2021 by Omar Ghanem and Daniel Stockhaus, GAM3S.GG, formerly known as Polkastarter Gaming, is a Web3 gaming superapp that curates and creates content to spotlight the top games and showcases reviews, guides, news, quests, and annual awards.Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, the platform currently offers curated Web3 gaming content, with 200+ games listed across 15 chains, and over 60,000+ registered gamers, positioning itself as the biggest hub for Web3 gamers since its launch in November 2022.

The raise will serve to scale and grow the GAM3S.GG gaming superapp — dubbed the “IGN for Web3” by investors and partners. supports the emirate’s move to a technology-driven and knowledge-based economy. GAM3S.GG is a member of AD Gaming, an initiative guiding the growth of Abu Dhabi’s gaming sector.

“The gaming industry is at a crossroads; while Web3 offers new exciting possibilities, the lack of quality content and a singular destination for all your Web3 gaming needs has left many gamers lost,” said Omar Ghanem, Co-Founder & CEO at GAM3S.GG.

GAM3S.GG has seen thousands of registered gamers exploring its selection of curated content focused on next-gen Web3 games since its inception. Last December, the platform hosted the first and largest Web3 game award show – the GAM3 Awards, which saw over 250,000 votes and 140,000 unique viewers tune into the streamed event. Now, the platform aims to continue building advanced features to eliminate barriers to entry for blockchain games, including social logins, player-owned item management, progression rewards, retrospective in-game progress tracking, as well as directly playing Web3 games on the platform.

“Traditional gaming has its IGN and Kotaku, yet the industry isn’t ready for the change that blockchain-powered titles present; and if we wait for them to step in, we’d lose potential early adopters and valuable progress — and that’s why GAM3S.GG was born,” added Ghanem. “We’re not just curating; we’re spotlighting the top games, setting the gold standard, and allowing gamers to engage with games in unprecedented ways as we aim to become the definitive home of Web3 gaming.”

The team’s mission for GAM3S.GG is to help Web3 gaming reach 100 million users through its platform and content and continue its evolution as the trusted gateway for gamers looking to explore the possibilities of blockchain-powered games through upcoming features that aim to bring all your Web3 gaming needs under one roof.

Sultan Al Riyami, Head of Gaming and eSports at AD Gaming, added: “Abu Dhabi has become a regional hub for Web3 gaming, with the likes of GAM3S.GG leading the way. The comprehensive Web3 gaming ecosystem that they are building will stand them in good stead within a sector so intrinsically focused on community building and engagement, so we look forward to seeing their accelerated growth in Abu Dhabi.”

“There’s immense value in platforms that curate and guide, particularly at early stages in new niches, and while we’ve seen plenty of platforms & aggregators rise over the years, GAM3S.GG stands out as a beacon of innovation in Web3 gaming,” said Shreyansh Singh, Head of Investments at Polygon. “We’ve worked closely with the team over the past 18 months and investing in them isn’t just about backing a platform; it’s about championing a vision where Web3 gaming is accessible, quality games rise above the noise, and where gamers have a trusted compass in this new frontier.”

This is only the beginning of the GAM3S.GG journey, and the industry is still in its infancy. With several household names entering the blockchain gaming world more often, the platform will serve as the gateway for all gamers to enjoy Web3 games to their maximum potential with all the content they need.

Worldcoin slapped with a one-year ban

0

Sam Altman-owned Worldcoin is facing a one-year suspension of its operations in Kenya, as recommended by a multi-agency team.

The suspension comes in response to concerns over data collection practices by Tools for Humanity, a software and hardware development company that develops tools to support the Worldcoin protocol.

Data Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait declared that the freeze on data collection from Kenyans will persist until specific conditions are met.

Ms Kassait outlined the conditions for Worldcoin to resume operations in Kenya, including undergoing a security audit, granting government access to data, registering with the Business Registration Services, and establishing a local representative.

“Additionally, the company must Conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) and improve transparency in data storage and consent processes,” the Data Commissioner stated.

As part of the recommendations, the licenses of related companies have been revoked and Worldcoin operators are urged to seek approval from the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) for testing their products, solutions, and services before launching them in the Kenyan market.

This investigation involved collaboration between the Office of Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy; and the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee (NC4).

To further impact Worldcoin, all WorldApps in the Kenyan region are to be removed from App stores for one year until the company’s approval is secured.

Kenya is a significant global market for cryptocurrency, with Worldcoin reporting over 600,000 registered users out of a total of 2.2 million worldwide.

The task force has also empowered the ODPC to impose administrative fines on companies engaged in data collection activities that pose threats to national security and the economy.

Additionally, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is tasked with monitoring identified companies for income tax compliance related to cryptocurrency income under the Finance Act, of 2023.

Furthermore, the Attorney General, CMA and CBK are responsible for spearheading the regulation of digital assets and cryptocurrency.

The recommendations were formulated based on findings that the consent obtained from Kenyan citizens was insufficient and did not align with the provisions of the Data Protection Act, with data collection purposes ranging from World ID provision to machine learning model development and testing.

Recently, Worldcoin refuted claims that it is primarily a data collection entity.

Worldcoin’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Alex Blania, clarified to the National Assembly Ad Hoc Committee that their core mission is not data mining or data selling, but rather authentication of human identity and unique categorization.

Mr. Blania faced numerous questions from the committee and emphasized that Worldcoin is not licensed to operate in Kenya due to uncertainties regarding data control regulations.

He assured the committee that they aim to enhance privacy and protect user data, rather than harvesting it.

Furthermore, Blania addressed allegations of coercing Kenyans to undergo iris scanning by offering them a token payment of Sh7,500.

Worldcoin defended this payment, characterizing it as a standard incentive similar to what other companies like PayPal might provide.

Also recently, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakumicha voiced concerns about potential complications arising from the World Coin scanners.

She suggested that those who underwent the eye-scanning procedure should promptly seek medical attention due to potential risks.

Additionally, the Health CS stated that the government is dedicated to monitoring the health of individuals who have registered for this process.

Worldcoin, introduced on July 24, offered individuals the opportunity to receive free money in exchange for having their eyes scanned using a device known as Orb.

This scan captures distinct biometric identifiers. The founder, Sam Altman, asserts that Worldcoin’s objective is to establish a digital World ID that distinguishes humans from artificial intelligence.

Kenya Power Unveils Plan to Accelerate Electric Cooking

0

Kenya Power is actively promoting the adoption of of electric cooking (e-cooking) among its 9.2 million customers with a target to increase uptake from approximately 90,000 current users to over 500,000 users in the next three years.
This was disclosed by the Company’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, during the launch of the Global eCooking Coalition (GeCCo) during the Africa Climate Week in Nairobi.

“Electricity has traditionally been viewed as the expensive cooking alternative by many Kenyans. Middle-class households often own task-specific electric cooking appliances such as kettles or microwaves but rely on liquefied petroleum gas for the bulk of their cooking. However, this is no longer the case as recent studies have shown. There is, therefore, an
enormous untapped potential for e-cooking in the country,” said Dr. (Eng.) Siror.

Recent data indicate that only 1% of electricity customers use the service to cook, with the majority of Kenyans primarily relying on wood fuel and gas. GeCCo is an initiative aimed at accelerating the transition from traditional cooking methods to e-cooking, both domestically and commercially. The coalition consists of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and Energising Development (EnDev)
among others.

“Kenya Power will work with partners to drive the uptake of e-cooking across the country. The utility has partnered with several other organisations including the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), and the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya (CCAK) to champion e-cooking in Makueni, Kitui, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Kisumu counties,” added Dr. (Eng.) Siror.

Through its Pika na Power public awareness campaign, Kenya Power aims to raise awareness of e-cooking for increased uptake by its customers. The Company has set up demonstration centres in Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Mombasa to advance the e-cooking agenda nationally.

How to turn a private number on or off on the Safaricom network

0

Have you ever considered hiding up your caller ID so that the person receiving your call wouldn’t know who it was? On the Safaricom network, there is actually a very straightforward USSD-based method to accomplish this. The USSD option provides a sufficient approach for individuals who would rather not tinker with their device’s settings because the capability is virtually always present on all handsets but occasionally concealed within the phone’s settings.

How to turn off caller ID for a particular contact

Follow the procedures below to hide your identify from particular contacts;

  • On your Safaricom phone’s dial pad, dial #31# followed by the phone number you intent to call without revealing your identity
  • An example to hide you caller ID from 0722000000 would be #31#0722000000
  • Then initiate the call

How to turn off caller identification on all incoming calls

As opposed to the aforementioned example, you’ll be concealing your caller ID on all incoming calls.

On your phone’s dial pad, just key in *31# You should receive a subsequent notification that caller ID option has been enabled on your phone

How to deactivate private number on your phone

The procedure is a little bit more complex and calls for users to visit their caller settings if they had activated the “hide caller ID” function but no longer wanted to utilize it. Using an Android phone, take the actions listed below:

  • Open the dialer app on your phone, then tap the three dots to access settings.
  • Then select “GSM Call Settings” from the “Calls” menu.
  • Select “Additional settings” from the GSM settings menu.
  • “Caller ID” should appear at that point.
  • Network Default, hide number, or show number are the options available.
  • Depending on the Android version of your phone, the settings may change.

How to Determine If Your Phone Has Been Tapped.

0

Your cell phone may have been tapped.

Some indicators that your cell phone has been tapped include:

  • Unusual Call Sounds

Your calls may be being recorded if you hear a high-pitched hum, pulsating static, clicking, or beeping. Call-forwarding may have been configured without your consent, or the device may include malware that records phone calls. A weak signal may need to be fixed if you occasionally hear strange noises, but if it occurs frequently, examine your phone.

  • Your phone overheats and your battery drains

Does the battery on your phone suddenly drop and it heats for no apparent reason? This may occur if you spend a lot of time playing video games or streaming videos. However, if it’s taking place when your smartphone ought to be idle, it might be malicious software that’s constantly sending information back to whoever is tracking your phone. Check your phone’s settings to determine which applications are consuming the most battery life.

  • Websites don’t seem as they should.

Some malware can enter your browser by presenting you with a false web page that appears legitimate and then capturing your login information when you submit it. This type of phishing fraud is widespread because social engineering techniques are effective. Close the page if the website you’re visiting behaves oddly or appears different from how it did before.

  • You Can’t Turn Off Your Phone

Your phone may be being tapped if it is having problems shutting down. Check to verify whether the backlight remains on even after the phone is turned off or if shutdown efforts are unsuccessful before completely turning off your phone. Another indication of danger is a random shutdown or reboot.

  • Strange Text Messages

Text messages that are mostly gibberish or have suspicious links may indicate that spyware was improperly installed on your device. The program is trying to send instructions to your apps and instead are coming through as SMS messages.

  • Hijacked Cameras and Microphones

Keep an eye out for erratic camera or microphone activation. Your phone may have been compromised if the camera light comes on even though you haven’t opened a camera-related app. Always look further since certain bad software enables hackers to access your camera even when the light is not on.

  • High Data Use That Is Inexplicable

Spyware and malware can consume a significant amount of data on your device since they frequently send information back to the hacker. If you don’t have an unlimited data plan, exceeding your typical data usage may incur extra charges. At the end of the billing cycle, check your phone statement to see whether prices have increased suddenly.

On an iPhone, navigate to Settings > Cellular to view your data consumption. The same choices are available in the Network & Internet or Connections settings for Android users. Additionally, you can program your phone to alert you if your data usage exceeds a predetermined limit.

Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle production underway

0

Tech giants are rushing to claim a piece of the electric vehicle (EV) pie, and Xiaomi wants to be among the first with their own vehicle.

The company has announced the trial manufacturing of its first EV, a process that has been going on for over a month. Xiaomi revealed that they have been producing approximately 50 cars every week, delivering all prototypes required for road tests as well as ironing out all manufacturing glitches.

Xiaomi’s EVs are almost ready to go on sale, thanks to a recent green light from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The remaining obstacle is approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Following that, it will be up to Xiaomi to scale up production and determine when to debut its vehicles.

The company has invested about €178 million in their EV business in the second quarter of this year alone, and they have set aside a total of €9 billion for the new automotive division’s first ten years.

So far, their prototype is said to have completed its summer and winter testing. Xiaomi’s president, Lu Weibing, stated that they intend to mass-produce its first EV model by the first half of 2024.

Ford unveils the Mustang Mach-E Rally, a sporty off-road electric SUV

0

Ford just announced the Mustang Mach-E Rally effectively taking the electric car technology off road. The company is aiming to build up on the success of the standard Mustang Mach E SUV.

The Shelby-esque racing stripes on the hood and a glossy black-painted steel top are standard on the Mach-E Rally. Upper and lower body moldings, a rear spoiler, front and rear motor shields, a front splitter, and rally-inspired fog lights are all available. If you get stuck in the mud, there’s a handy front-end recovery point with a hook.

Ford is aiming for 480 horsepower and a whopping 881 Nm of torque. The Rally is 20mm taller than the GT, with carefully adjusted springs, and MagneRide shocks. It has 385mm front brake rotors and red Brembo brake calipers.

The Mach-E Rally has an estimated range of 402 km and is powered by a 91kWh battery. On a DC fast charger, charging from 10% to 80% takes only 36 minutes.

The SUV includes a new “RallySport Drive Mode” which brings more aggressive damping on those unpredictable terrains. There are also new tires that are specifically built to handle sloppy roads, including snowy terrains.

Despite the off-road vibe of the Mach-E Rally, the cabin is high-tech, including Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system and other functions such as Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning. The inside is similar to previous Mach-E variations, except the inclusion of performance seats.

In the United States, Ford suggests a starting MSRP of around €60,600. Exact details will be revealed closer to the release date, which is set for early 2024.

Toyota reveals new Hilux running on hydrogen fuel cell electric technology

0

In a joint project between Toyota, consortium partners and the UK government funding, the first Hilux Hydrogen Fuel Cell Prototype has been built. It is the first of 10 intended to be built before the end of the year.

Fuel cells generate electricity by merging hydrogen with oxygen, releasing only water and heat as byproducts. This Hilux’s powertrain uses parts from the Toyota Mirai. The automaker estimates that it has a range of 365 miles between hydrogen refills.

The hydrogen tanks appear to fit between the frame rails, roughly where the cabin does. The additional fuel cell components are located beneath the hood, where the combustion engine is normally found. The battery is located in the back.

The carmaker plans to put the ten prototypes through rigorous testing to ensure the model lives up to the Hilux’s rugged work horse standards. The company is preparing tests for safety, functionality, and durability. They are also using these prototypes to explore the opportunities and risks of a fuel-cell-powered pickup.

Lastly, Toyota is exploring producing a Land Cruiser powered by fuel cells on top of other variants with Plug-in hybrid and all-electric technologies.

ICO to review Period tracker apps over data concerns

0

According to recent reports from BBC, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is currently conducting a review of period and fertility tracking applications due to concerns regarding data security.

These apps operate by charting menstrual cycles based on user-provided information and claim to assist with various menstrual health issues, including determining the optimal time for conception.

The ICO’s review stems from survey evidence revealing that many users are apprehensive about the security of the data they share and the transparency of app developers.

The regulatory body commissioned a poll that found a third of women had utilized these apps to monitor their menstrual cycles or fertility.

Of these users, 59% expressed reservations about data transparency, while 57% were concerned about the security of their submitted information.

Additionally, the research indicated that more than half of app users believed they had observed an increase in advertisements related to babies or fertility after signing up.

While some respondents viewed this marketing positively, 17% described these adverts as distressing.

The deputy commissioner of regulatory policy at the ICO, Emily Keaney emphasized the understandable nature of these concerns, given the highly sensitive and personal information involved.

Ms Keaney stressed the expectation that health apps would prioritize user privacy and implement transparent policies. She stated that the review’s goal is to assess both the positive and negative aspects of the current functioning of these apps.

The ICO’s investigation will encompass several aspects, including whether app privacy policies are overly complex or confusing, leaving users uncertain about the data they’ve consented to share.

The review will also evaluate whether these apps request or store excessive amounts of data and whether users are exposed to distressing targeted advertisements without consent.

The ICO is encouraging app users to share their experiences through a survey on its website and is also conducting focus groups and user testing.

Women’s health groups have offered their support in this endeavour.

“Furthermore, the regulator has reached out to companies providing period and fertility tracking apps, including some of the most popular options available to UK users, to ascertain how they handle users’ personal information,” BBC noted.
