Google promises to extend Daydream VR support to 11 devices, Samsung Galaxy S8 gets it today.

0

Google Daydream VR platform offers an ecosystem of virtual reality applications and hardware without the restrictions that other manufacturers put on their offerings. For instance, Samsung has a VR platform, but it can only be accessed by Samsung devices, and only those with high end specifications. On the other hand, Google has promised to open up their platform to more gadgets before the end of this year.

During Alphabet’s earnings announcement yesterday, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said that they will extend the support for Daydream to 11 devices in total this year. So far, 7 phones are already in the program, they include Gooogle Pixel, Pixel XL, Moto Z, ZTE Axon 7, the Asus Zenfone AR, Huawei’s Mate 9 Pro and Porsche Design Mate 9 (just a Huawei mate 9, but for the filthy rich).

Today marks the official entrance of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the S8+ to the list (making a total of 9 phones) via an over the air update. It is important to note that VR is supported not in all countries yet; Mexico and other smaller countries in Europe are yet to be added. As for Africa, all I can say is that Google was showcasing Daydream at a Machine Learning event here in Kenya, so that perhaps is a positive sign? You decide.

Anyway, there still 2 phones left to reach the promised 11. In case you have not had a chance to experience Virtual Reality, you can do so by visiting Samsung stores in major cities around you. They let customers test it for free. It is super amazing; lets you travel to new dimensions and explore new worlds in an experience which is much better than what you get in 3D films. In addition, Daydream and the new Samsung Gear VR has a controller that lets you play games and interact with the new worlds. Make sure you check them out.

Alibaba’s Jack Ma launches a $10 million African Young Entrepreneurs Fund for tech startups in Africa

0

Jack Ma, Alibaba founder and executive chairman has launched a $10 million African Young Entrepreneurs Fund to support youthful online entrepreneurs across the continent. Mr. Ma launched the fund during the Youth Connekt Africa Summit held last week in Rwanda and co-hosted by UNCTAD and the Government of Rwanda.

“I want that fund supporting African online businesses,” said Mr. Ma. “The money is set. This is my money, so I don’t have to get anybody’s approval. I want them to go to China, meeting our people, seeing all the things we have been doing, all the great ideas China has. They know what they want. And when they know what they want, we can support it.”

The fund is set to start hiring staff then start local operations before the end of the year. Mr Ma, who is on his first trip to Africa is a Special Adviser to UNCTAD for young entrepreneurs and small business and was accompanied by UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi. Mr. Ma was invited to share his Alibaba journey since its humble start in 1999 to a global e-commerce giant worth over $231 billion.
UNCTAD is working with Mr. Ma to explore opportunities with African businesses to participate in global trade, as well as to raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by the international community in 2015. In addition to his role as an adviser to UNCTAD, Mr. Ma also serves as a UN Sustainable Development Goals Advocate.

Ma spoke to the youth and small businesses in Kenya and then headed to Rwanda where he spoke at the Youth Connekt Africa Summit which brought together more than 1,500 participants from government, entrepreneurial and investor communities, multinationals, and startups.

During his speeches, Mr. Ma underscored the importance of internet access in all nations as an important raw material for economies just as coal and electricity were in the past. Working with UNCTAD, Ma aims to take 200 budding African entrepreneurs to China to learn from Alibaba’s journey. He also aims to partner with African universities to teach internet technology, artificial intelligence and e-commerce to help more youths to take up online businesses and create their own jobs.

“Not being connected to the internet today is worse than not having electricity 100 years ago,” he said. “I think e-commerce, Internet, Big Data is the future. You can never stop it. You like it or don’t like it. But you will never stop it. Every time you have a technological revolution, it will kill a lot of jobs and it will create a lot of jobs. This is what history tells us,” Ma said.

This Nigerian Startup Launches to Provide Home and Office Relocation Service

0

Every single day, there are people moving, either from one house to another or changing office location. The process is usually really stressful. From getting a truck to convey properties to a new location, to arranging each item rightly. The Relocate team have probably faced this challenge at one point, and have decided to provide a solution.

Relocate claims to be Nigeria’s No.1 Home/Office Movers. They help make it easy for people moving homes & offices in and out of Lagos Metropolis, with an aim of eliminating the stress that comes with relocating.

Relocate offers different packing services to fit all types of moves and budgets, ranging from its ‘packing & unpacking service’, where they pack, transport & unpack things at users’ new place, to its ‘fast-track service’ for those who need to move very quickly, and its ‘V.I.P service’, which is all- inclusive of the above listed services plus installations and uninstallations.

They also provide boxes and other packing materials free of charge. This service, according to the team, is a point of differentiation that makes them the leader among Lagos moving companies.

Relocate charges a fixed price irrespective of how long the distance you’re moving to may be (within Lagos). They claim to have state-of-the-art trucks that are reliable, and movers/employees who receive top-in-class training on a regular basis.

Users who want to request moving services simply visit the Relocate website, request a quote and making payment after receipt of the quote.

Although Relocate is not the first startup offering the service, as there’s MoveMe and a few others. The service is however, one that’s not very popular in the Nigerian tech space, and Relocate has a chance to make a name for itself.

ChopiChop Wants to Pay You for Shopping Online

0

ChopiChop is a cash back website that lists ecommerce stores in and outside Nigeria, as well as products from several ecommerce stores. These stores and products are literally affiliate links, directing users to shop on their preferred platform..

For every completed purchase, ChopiChop gets a commission which they share with users. According to the team, “our business model is based on affiliate program. We have come to help online shoppers save some money they spend online. It’s a win-win program. E-commerce stores get customers, we get commission and we share the commission with our users.”

The founders revealed that the ChopiChop service would be officially launched to the public in August 2017.

Users would be able to withdraw their earnings into their bank accounts or convert it to mobile airtime, pay electricity bills or pay for TV cable subscription or even donate it to their favorite charity homes.

It’s not new that several ecommerce platforms provide opportunity for people to become affiliate marketers. Through this programme, these affiliate partners are able to earn commissions by sharing their special affiliate links on their websites, social media profiles, with family and friends, and getting people to shop on the platforms.

ChopiChop is no different from affiliate marketers. Only difference is, they’ve found a way to convert this into a business.

People would do anything to shop for less, and getting a percentage back from what they’ve spent looks even more attractive. The platform definitely has a potential of wining the hearts of millions of Nigerians.

For the founder, “DoctorsOffice exists because we have a passion to see that more Nigerians access affordable and efficient healthcare especially in situations when a small preventive action can be the difference between life and death. Our goal is simply to promote the health of every Nigerian irrespective of social divide or pocket size, and we have a mission to empower and provide every individual and health providers in Africa with health solutions and technologies used on a daily basis by millions of Africans for a better and efficient healthcare delivery.”

We’ve had 1dokita, DoctorsHub and a few others. Competition however might not be a problem, as the health market is wide enough to accommodate even more startups that are looking to improve the health situation in Nigeria.

LEAK : This is allegedly the finalized design of the upcoming bezel-less iPhone 8

0

The upcoming iPhone 8 is perhaps the most leaked and the most confusing Apple phone ever.  Even the most trusted ‘leakstars’ don’t seem to be sure of what to expect of it. The main confusion has been around two main features; the placement of the selfie camera (the ear piece and all the sensors that are placed next to that shooter) and the fingerprint reader.

Redesigned selfie camera, ear piece and sensors placement; new network and battery display areas too

In today’s leak, those two issues seem to have gotten a finalized location. According to the pictures released, the selfie camera will remain up top as expected. Adjacent to these setup will be a left and right display area that will show the network/WIFI and the battery level respectively, as shown on the photo. You must be wondering where the other notifications will be placed but apparently there is a “functional area” for them at the bottom of the selfie camera.

Note the elongated power button, might host the fingerprint reader

The ambitious finger print reader that was to be placed under the touch screen area seems to have been way ahead of its time. Apple may have ran into problems actualizing it so they settled for a much simpler location: under the power button. This explains why the button is much bigger relative to previous iPhones; it’s same location Sony uses in their Xperia phones since 2016. Samsung faced similar problems while trying to place the Galaxy S8 fingerprint under the Infinity Display touch screen. The final location – next to the camera lens- seemed to be a final rushed decision to (say the least). A user keeps smudging the camera lens while trying to unlock the S8.

The fingerprint of the Xperia XZ is located on the power button

Notice that the 3.5mm audio jack is missing

The leak also reveals that the 3.5mm audio jack will not be making a return on the iPhone 8. It was removed from the iPhone 7 released last year and Apple is not one to go back on its decisions. There will be a 4mm bezel around the screen to prevent accidental palm screen touches while holding the phone. The rear design remains unchanged.

We only have a couple of weeks to go before the official launch of this phone, rumors are placing it on sometime in September. For now, feast your eyes to the beautiful designs leaked today and remember, leaks do not always pan out, so keep an open mind.

Android O Developer Preview 4 gets released; official public version comes next month

0

Google borrowed a leaf from Apple and started releasing developer previews of their major OS version long before they reach the public. This method gives developers enough time to get acquainted with the new versions and to modify their apps to take advantage of the upcoming features.

Up to date, no official name has been given for the upcoming Android O/ 8.0. For those not familiar with Google’s naming scheme, know this; it’s all about alphabets and desserts. Every new android version gets the next letter of the alphabet, we just came from Android with alphabet letter (M) whose corresponding dessert name was Marshmallow, now we are at Android letter O, but the dessert part is unknown. Many are speculating Oreo, but Google might have other ideas.

This Preview 4 doesn’t bring any new features, just the final system behaviors, the latest bug fixes, optimizations, and the final developer APIs. This 4th Preview also marks the last developer build before the official release is done.

To get into the developer program, you will need to sign up here Android Beta Program. In addition, you will need to have the supported phones which include Pixel and Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Pixel C, and Nexus Player.

We are looking forward to the official release next month, with it will be awesome features such as new notifications channels and layout as well as floating windows thanks to picture in picture feature just to name a few. Some apps like WhatsApp have already started making use of the picture in picture functionality.

Onychek Launches As It Aims To Become The Powerhouse For Luxury Fashion From Africa

0

It is very easy for western fashion to cloud that from Africa because of the knack or love of many Africans for foreign made products. Thus, many people believe that it will be difficult to sell the idea of African luxury fashion to Africans and the world.

For Chekwas Okafor the founder and CEO of Onychek.com, he never accepted this perception. He believed African fashion exists (not just African fashion but African luxury fashion) and he actually established a platform which is enabling Africans to purchase luxury fashion from Africa. That platform is Onychek.com.

Okafor who founded the startup in 2016, explaining the reasons why he chose to deal in African luxury fashion said: “For one, it creates jobs. Growing up, I cannot remember wearing a ready-to-wear clothing from an African brand. When I thought of buying ready-to-wear clothes, I went to the second-hand market and made my choices. Only tailored clothing was prevalent, and they were worn for ceremonies. With that saying, making more ready-to-wear clothing locally will simply create jobs.

“Also, African fashion preserves culture. African designers are doing an incredible job of weaving culture into their designs. We are moving from Africa being a mere source of inspiration to African designers wholeheartedly bringing African culture to the forefront of the fashion “conversation” in a way the world hasn’t seen before. This is what the African luxury industry is doing. Bringing the African culture to the forefront of their designs.”

On what is unique about Onychek.com, Okafor assures that all the products on the site are made in Africa. His words: “We consciously made this decision as it is in line with why we exist as a company- to create jobs and preserve culture through fashion. This was a challenging decision as there are many African owned brands based in the diaspora that we would love to work with, but can’t. We also see that focusing on local brands also gives us an advantage in enhancing discovery.”

On challenges, Okafor said: “People still don’t associate Africa with Luxury. They find it difficult to understand why products made in Africa should be expensive. This is why we are focused on creating content that will help re-educate people about the quality and culture imbued in our products and what to expect from African brands. Making this common knowledge will take time just like anything new. We know this. That is why we are in for the long haul.”

Okafor concluded by advising budding entrepreneurs to focus on execution and also reach out to people in the industry even though they didn’t know me. This has proven to be valuable.

It is noteworthy to add that if you are ordering outside the United States, you have to pay an estimated shipping fee of $25 for these countries including Canada, South Africa, Nigeria, and even China.

In addition to hosting and publishing your articles and stories, the PremierWrite platform also has a freelance feature designed to allow talented, creative and professional writers earn while doing what they love. Freelancers can be hired for any writing related service.

According to the PremierWrite team, “what we hope to accomplish through this, is to give opportunity to various individuals within and outside of Africa, the opportunity to find work.

Premier write is committed to giving published an unpublished writers ultimate brand exposure. We give ordinary people the opportunity to share their extraordinary story as we are working towards bringing about a new revolution of reading and writing”.

It’s official: Infinix Smart is unveiled, has dual front speakers and 2 day battery life

0

Back when Infinix came into Africa, it established itself as a budget entry level brand. It’s hot series offered affordable 5 inch smartphones that sold like hot cakes. Everywhere you looked, especially in urban areas and amongst campus students, you were bound to find an Infinix Hot series.

The company has decided to return to its roots with a new smartphone to mark the transition. Meet the Infinix Smart, a smartphone with entry level specs but still being able to maintain high standards for the features that matter the most. These signature attributes include a 2 day long battery life thanks to a 3060mAh pack.

Even better, the Smart maintains the really great speakers found on infinix gadgets, this time the bar has been raised higher by incorporation of Dirac Stereo Widening technology. This tech involves 2 front facing speakers that give out realistic stereo sound. This is a feature that you won’t find on any other budget devices from popular manufacturers. It will be interesting to see how it competes with the music oriented Boom series from its sister company Tecno. Finally, we have the latest Android version 7 Nougat running under the XOS 2.2 interface. We hope that the company will not turn of the split screen multitasking feature due to the small 1GB RAM available. We believe that amount of RAM can still do some slight multitasking.

The rest of the specs remain modest, as expected, to keep the cost down. They include a 5.0 inch IPS HD screen, quad core Mediatek 6580, 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash and 2MP front facing shooter. The storage is set to 16GB but it is expandable up to 32GB. Refilling the battery is done via a standard USB 2.0 port with no fast charging technology mentioned. A 3.5 mm head phone jack is present as well for wired audio. This entire tech is held in a small 8.3mm thin body. You can get the full specifications over here.

The phone is already present for purchase at Jumia Kenya and is selling for 7,999. It is available in colors that appeal to the young and vibrant customers, they include black, red, green , blue, gold and white.

Targeted Training for Business Reporters to Curb Conveyor Belt Journalism

0

The recent past has seen the rise of conveyor belt journalism in most news entities across all platforms of radio, television, online and newspapers. Just as its name suggests, it involves conveying news from the source to the audience just as it is. No interrogating facts as presented, no getting the story behind the story, no analysis, or spin-offs from the original story. Just the good old press release that is most likely to cover the topic at hand for that particular time. All these lead to generic news being out there for the audience consumption.

One of the casualties of this kind of journalism has been the Business news which most people think is not popular as compared to the heated noise generated by categories such as politics. It has however, been established that this is not entirely true as business conferences and personalities that have come into the country have generated so much interest from members of the public as evidenced by the raving and sharing on social media platforms.

Some of the cases that come to mind are the coming to Kenya by the founder of Alibaba.com Jack Ma who is the richest man in China. He came with 38 investors eager to invest in the country. The other one is the Global Entrepreneurship Summit that saw Former US president Barack Obama jet into the country with investors.

The reading of the budget is not just a boring monologue by a minister as we used to take it either. Nowadays members of the public keenly follow the proceedings.

Given the interest in business news by businessmen, investors, a techno savvy public, consumers, governments the money and economic stakes involved, it therefore, follows that business reporting should be done well and given the amount time it deserves.

Conveyor belt journalism will not work here and this means that the reasons why journalists prefer this kind of reporting need to be interrogated. If it is just plain laziness then that can only be handled at the company level. However, if it is about lack of know-how, stakeholders will have to come together and handle this issue to ensure that there is quality and not just quantity when it comes to news reporting.

Kenya’s technology giant Safaricom noticed this gap and launched the Safaricom Business Journalism Fellowship at the Strathmore Business School. The program is a mid-career professional training that takes in 15 of the best business reporters and takes them through a three-modular program for eight months. At the end of the program, the journalist will be expected to have completed a 30-hour credit course before graduating.

Thanks to this program, journalists are able to interpret the budget on their own without being reduced to parroting the cabinet secretary of finance during its reading every year. Data journalism is also growing as people are able to interpret data which entails hundreds of stories which can determine the current business environment in the country.

They can decipher the current state of the economy which many people quote but have no idea what it means. Sometimes it can be hard for the layman to understand business language and with their journalism skills; it will now be easier to tell the story in a simpler way and have everyone in the living room long after the politics stories are done.

Things become easier when you know what you are doing and just being pulled from the politics or sports desk to go cover the latest stories and getting frustrated in the process because they do not understand anything. Specialization ensures that journalists have a total grasp of what they are reporting and will use press releases to write the skeleton of what they want to report about particular stories while filling the body with in-depth analysis and background.

Well done stories will ensure that the public knows what is going on in their country and accordingly. Visitors will also know where to invest their hard-earned money.

Rethink Education Allows You Access Your High School Textbooks Directly on Your Phone

0

Forty Three Percent of South African high school learners do not have access to textbooks or academic content; however the majority of these learners do have a feature phone.

Rethink Education, based in South Africa and founded by Storme Magee is a web app which currently provides 10 textbooks worth of Maths and Science content in a single mobile application. The content is CAPS aligned and is designed in an easy to read chat-style format for interactive learning. This learning tool can be used alongside teaching and tutoring. Their teacher dashboard allows teachers and tutors to track their student’s progress and engagement on the platform. Their platform is incredibly data lite (1 chapter uses under 100KB) and does not compete for any storage on students phones.

Douglas Hoernle, co-founder of Rethink Education, got the idea to commence the startup from watching university students engage with chat rooms to ask their fellow students and lecturers questions. He saw how easily a lecturer could respond to fairly difficult problems using an online chat interface.

Digestible content is more appreciated, especially when it comes to mobile phones. This is the main reason Rethink creates content, based on the high school curriculum, that’s easier to interact with.

Rethink chose Mxit as one of its platforms. The average user, of which there are 6.5-million, spends more than 90 minutes a day on the website. This method allows Rethink to reach more students via various devices, as long as they have an internet connection.

Instead of teachers naively relying on tedious handouts to keep students up-to-date and preoccupied, learners can be encouraged to study via the web application. The platform is cloud-based and can be accessed via PC, mobile or tablet.

In 2014, rethink managed to scoop up nearly 400 000 unique visits and has rolled out the product to over fifty schools across the country. The schools who’ve paid for the service range from under resourced ones to those keen on new tech solutions.

Rethink Education has been the solution for every high school learner when it comes to comprehending Maths and Science. Students have access to material from grade 8 to grade 12.  Learners have revolutionized the way they study by learning on the thing they all carry around with them all the time- their phones.

VCA4 Study Proves Startups that Incorporate Gender Balance Are More Likely to Succeed

0

A new study dubbed  ‘2017 Venture Finance in Africa’conducted by Venture Capital of Africa (VCA4) while attempting to better understand why some African startups outdo others, had discovered among other factors that unique traits of the founders of the company result into a relatively good level of commercial performance. Although many factors go into building a company, a strong team of founders is a very imperative part for the key driver of venture success in Africa. Many investors consider this as the main thing they look for, but now the data also shows that the right team of founders makes the difference, and is the single most unique characteristic across the companies making commercial progress.

By analyzing two data samples of 100 ventures comprising of ‘emerging’ and ‘established’ ventures, the research team found correlations that help understand the venture’s ability to be successful.

Gender balance was a key factor as founding teams of successful ventures were more likely to include male and female founders. It is noteworthy that 46% of these ventures included a female founder in their team. Exclusively female teams run 9% of the startups.

Among the countries with 20 or more ventures participating in the survey, Uganda and Kenya have the highest female participation. For Uganda, 57% of the ventures include a female founder where for Kenya the number is only slightly lower at 55%. South Africa has the lowest female participation rate at 33%. Nevertheless, these percentages of female founders far outpace averages recorded in more established startup hubs like New York or San Francisco.

Similar findings were discovered in previous report called “Women at the Wheel” conducted by Dow Jones, claiming that venture-backed companies that include females as senior executives are more likely to succeed than companies where only males are in charge.

0

Every day millions of poor farmers in Africa struggle to access better crop and veterinary care for their livestock and crops. Daktari Pap, founded by Samuel Munguti is a mobile, web and SMS technology platform linking farmers and agro dealers to certified and reliable livestock, crop and insurance service providers to prevent current and future crop/livestock health challenges which contribute to huge losses.

38 million people in Kenya have mobile phones, and about 88% of the population use mobile phones to do their everyday banking and conduct other business, the same can be used to benefit those in need of crop and veterinary care.

Access to veterinary doctors, agronomists and insurance agents are instantly available to farmers. They connect farmers to vetted and certified crop and livestock service providers, and use the latest data analysis and mobile technology to quickly and easily connect farmers with reliable service providers.

As a farmer when your cow, sheep, goat or crops are infected by disease or pests, you wouldn’t want to wait several days for a veterinarian or agronomist to come. Using the DaktariPap application, you will immediately get connected to a certified service provider who will attend to you in the Farm within one hour or less.

Once they receive a request from a farmer they immediately process it and send it to the closest service provider via their mobile platform. The vet or agronomist receives the request and has the opportunity to review it and accept it. Once accepted, the service provider visits the farmer within one hour or less.

In addition, farmers may benefit from information on good agriculture practices, crop/livestock pests and diseases through the platform.

Bifasor is the Tinder of the Transport and Logistics Industry

0

Bifasor, based in the Ivory Coast and founded by Zakaria Dabone, is a professional network and marketplace for Africa’s freight transport and logistics industry. Bifasor puts shippers, carriers, freight forwarders, warehouse operators, mechanics, automotive and spare parts manufacturers and dealers, and other interested parties–from Africa and from around the world–into direct contact with one another. The service provides them with a unique dashboard to manage their interactions so that they can offer, find, stock and deliver goods. Basically it acts like a matchmaking platform, much like Tinder. Bifasor also provides an online marketplace for the sale of goods and services related to transport and logistics.

Zakaria had previously spent time in the transport industry before starting Bifasor. His family members were managers of a transport company based in the Ivory Coast and their daily challenges inspired him to create Bifasor. With a highly segmented supply chain, lack of information that isolates players in the sector, (needlessly long) delays and exorbitant costs, transporting goods falls is a real-life obstacle course. All these difficulties slow down the commercial development of the continent with knock-on consequences that adversely affect access to goods and services by local populations. Which can have far more dire implications, especially when it comes to delivery of humanitarian assistance to disaster or epidemic-affected areas.

Bifasor aims to address this lack of transparency in the supply chain and the general lack of visibility of smaller actors in the industry. With nearly 90 per cent of small and micro enterprises in the logistics sector in Africa having neither a website nor a marketing department, presence on the platform will assist such companies in gaining visibility.

The idea of digitizing the relationships between those in the supply chain appeared as an obvious solution, because it would effectively streamline operations, and reduce costs and delays. The platform would bring together all those involved in Africa’s transportation supply chain which will increase their visibility, allow them to contact and interact with one another instantly, permit them to create personal networks of partners and clients, and empower them to grow their businesses.

With trade volumes in Sub-Saharan Africa expected to nearly quadruple to 384.6 million tonnes by 2030, the Bifasor team has developed a solution for everyone involved in the supply chain, particularly targeting small and medium-sized transport and logistics companies.

WhatsApp to soon have pop up video calls, will let you can continue texting in the background

0

WhatsApp is on a roll lately, barely a week goes by without hearing of a new feature coming up. Just the other day we told you that Youtube links will now be playing inside the WhatsApp interface and that they will have  floating windows that let you continue chatting as the video gets streamed.

It seems the company has applied the same idea to video chats. Starting with an upcoming update, you will be able to have a video call with your buddy while still being able to quickly reply to your texts. The video will be streamed on a floating window that will let you access the rest of the app in the background. Previously, you had to wait until a video call is over before you could reply to an incoming message. Some texts simply require a short yes/no kind of reply; it seems that those are the kind that will benefit most from this feature.

The floating window is made possible by the picture in picture feature that came with android 7.0 Nougat. It is not clear if the pop up window will be movable nor if you will be able to use other apps beside WhatsApp. I would imagine taking notes about the conversation or setting up a date on your calendar app would come in handy.

Evidence for this feature was found in WhatsApp Beta app (used for testing purposes). Strangely, only devices running Android O Developer Preview can access the pop up video calls for now. We hope it will trickle down to all android versions once the feature it rolls out to the public.

Apple is now selling Nokia products in its online stores. Wait what?!!

0

Yes, you read that title right, but it’s not the kind of products you are thinking. Now that Nokia is back to the smartphone game, the two companies are very much rivals in that aspect, so no you won’t find the Nokia 6 in the Apple store. However, Apple stocks Nokia Health products.

Nokia Health products

The iPhone maker has been selling health products from a company called Withings, but Nokia recently bought the health company and renamed it Nokia Health. Immediately after the purchase was finalized, Nokia sued Apple for patent infringement, which naturally led to the products being pulled off the shelves. Now that the law suit is settled, the two companies are back to being best buddies. Nokia Health products are back on Apple’s online shop and will be coming to physical stores soon.

You may be wondering why Apple is stocking health products in what is predominantly a mobile phone store. Apparently, the products are connected to smartphones to relay the user’s health information to dedicated app. So when you, for instance, use Nokia BPM+, the blood pressure reading will be sent to the Health Mate app on your iPhone. The same way a smartwatch works. The app also works on android too. Users can share the information with their doctor or simply use it to maintain a healthy body.

It’s amazing how big companies do not keep grudges after court quarrels. Apple has been sued left and right by companies like Samsung, but soon after the case is closed, business between them continues. Incredible.

Ninety Percent of Kenyans Have Seen Fake News Regarding the 2017 General Election

0

The first ever study on fake news in Kenya, The Reality of Fake News in Kenya, launched today in Nairobi and reveals shocking results concerning veracity of Kenya’s Media. The new study reveals that 90% of Kenyans have seen or heard false news about the 2017 general election, with 87% reporting instances of deliberately false or fake news.

The nationwide survey was led by strategic communications consultancy Portland in collaboration with GeoPoll, a mobile surveying platform.

Conducted via SMS, the survey asked a nationally representative sample of 2,000 Kenyans a series of questions about their consumption of news during May 2017 in relation to the forthcoming general election.

The survey found:

  • 90% of respondents reported having seen false or inaccurate news in relation to the general election. 87% of respondents regarded this news as being deliberately misleading – or fake news.
  • Traditional media remain the most trusted news sources, with television ranking highest, followed by radio and newspapers.
  • Radio is the most consistently accessed source of news in Kenya, with the smallest variation between different provinces across the country.
  • Social media is widely used by Kenyans of all ages to access and share news, with 49% of Kenyans using social platforms to secure general election news. However, social media consistently ranks lower than traditional media on trust.
  • Facebook and WhatsApp are the most popular social media platforms for news, preferred overall by 46% and 25% respectively.
  • Friends and family, and community leaders, are the least trusted sources of news overall, ranked as the least likely to provide accurate information about the general election.
  • 57% Kenyans feel able to access all the information about the general election that they need.
  • A vast majority of Kenyans (78%) would like more factual and accurate information about the general election instead of opinion and commentary.
  • 67% of Kenyans prefer comprehensive and detailed information about politics. 33% prefer summarised and concise information.

Robert Watkinson, Partner at Portland, said, “With 4 in 10 Kenyans unable to access accurate information about the general election, fake news is clearly a limiting factor on the electorate’s ability to make informed decisions. By revealing the scale and impact of fake news, we hope this study provides a new point of reference, not just for political campaigning in Kenya but also for all communicators seeking to engage Kenyans in the digital age.”
