Moto Z Review: Meet the thinnest and the most innovative phone ever.

0

Motorola has been away from the Kenyan market for a while. Since it’s parent company, Lenovo, has a presence in the country, it was only a matter of time before they brought back Moto phones. The brand is now back with a bang touting an innovative device that makes the bold claim of being the thinnest premium device in the world. Is this phone enough to get people back on the Moto wagon? Find out in this in-depth review.

Design

back

The design of the Moto Z is by far it’s biggest appeal. The claim of the thinnest premium phone in the world is not just marketing buzz. This phone is truly slim. The rear and the camera ring glitter when light falls on them. You are sure to turn a lot of heads while using the Moto Z.

display
The front is all glass and the back is a combination of glass and a material that looks like metal with subtle lines. The lines resemble those of solar panels. Still on the back, there is a protruding camera bump. For those who hate such bumps, there is a Moto shell mod cover that nicely levels the bump with the rest of the body.
Below the display are 4 circular components. The 2 big circles are sensors for aiding with Moto Display feature. The other 2 pin sized circles are mics for the Moto Voice feature that will be discussed later in this review. This components are completely invisible in the black model in case they don’t sit well with you.

Display

amoled

The display is a 5.5 inch AMOLED panel with a QHD (2560*1440) resolution. That works out to an amazing 535 pixels per inch . With that kind of resolution, texts and all small details are very vivid and sharp.
The AMOLED has toned down colors unlike the screens from Samsung. Despite that, the colors still pop much more than a typical LCD. There is a setting to turn the  color to be a little more realistic if you want. I wouldn’t recommend it though, once you feast your eyes to the “vibrant”  mode, you wouldn’t wanna go back.

Performance

A snapdragon 820 chipset coupled with 4GB RAM powers the phone. This is the exact same configuration found in the Samsung Galaxy S7. The performance is really off the charts. I never experienced even one stutter during my time with the phone. However, the phone gets hot when playing intensive games. The hardware is well complimented by the stock software that is pre-installed.

Software

Moto Z being a former child of Google, the company being Android, comes in a stock software package. At launch, the phone comes with Android 6.0 but the new version, 7.0 Nougat,  has already been released as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update.
Only one app is non-stock, the Moto App. This is the hub of all the magic that makes the Moto Z’s software special. It hosts moto voice which lets you use your own custom phrase to wake the phone and give oral commands. The phone has 4 mics so you can rest assured that it will hear your command. I even tried it in a noisy room and it responded. No worrying about your African accent, chances are the Moto Z will understand your command clearly.

Screenshot_20170317-091145 Screenshot_20170320-112722
The Moto Display feature uses the two proximity sensors below the screen.  When you wave your hand above the display or take the phone out of your pocket, the display automatically turns on to show you your notifications.
The remaining sections of moto app is called Moto Actions, it helps to set up gestures for doing various things such as muting the phone, opening the camera app and so forth. My favorite gesture is double pressing the power key to open the Camera app, it works every time.

Screenshot_20170320-134739

Since a 5.5 inch is too big for most people to operate with one hand, Moto Z comes with a thoughtful one handed mode. To activate it, you just swipe your finger up from the on screen keys. It is part of the options in the Moto Actions suite. Tapping on the black screen area deactivates it.

Telephony and multimedia
This is the section that has the most surprises. First of all, the Moto Z has its loud speaker at the earpiece above the display. It is loud enough to listen to music and do hands free calls. Normal calls are also very audible and sufficiently loud.
In the multimedia department. Watching  movies in this screen is a pleasure. The AMOLED reality does justice to videos. Couple that with a loudspeaker Moto Mod and you are in for quite an experience.
The other surprise comes in the music listening department. The Moto Z has no 3.5mm head phone jack instead it outputs audio via the USB-C port. Fortunately, there is a adapter in the box that coverts the USB port into a head phone jack so now you can still use your favorite earphones, just make sure not to lose the adapter. In case you do, you can stream music via Bluetooth as you look for USB-type C earphones.
The music produced via the earphones is loud and clear, the bass is decent and the vocals are very articulate. You will find yourself discovering new beats in your favorite songs.

Camera

PRO
The rear camera is 13 MP with optical image stabilization for shooting blur free pics and shake free videos. There is a laser auto focus that ensures quick focus speeds. The camera can record upto 4k resolution  videos. Pictures on the camera look great especially under bright light. There is auto HDR which really works perfectly making sure there are no overexposed pictures at any given time . Professional mode is also onboard, this mode helps the pros gets creative with photography. Low light pics are okay if you use the dual LED flash. Not using the flash results in dull pictures that can only be savaged with the professional mode. In overall images produced have lots of detail and great dynamic range. The colors are saturated which really breaths life into the photos.

A 5MP selfie graces the front of the device. This is a unique camera that houses an arsenal of features to make your selfie great. It has beautification mode which can either be manual or automatic. There is a flash for bright low light selfies. A professional mode also exists too, this feature is usually rare on front facing cameras. In addition, HDR selfies are also at your disposal. The quality is the selfies is really amazing. The camera is wide angle so your can easily fit many people in it. The pictures have saturated color rendering and details are well captured.

Battery

Screenshot_20170317-210132

Motorola insists that the device can give a whole day of battery life. Looking at the battery capacity of only 2600mAh powering a 5.5 inch QHD screen I was skeptical of that claim. I have seen phones with such small batteries struggling at pushing half this resolution. Well I was pleasantly surprised by the Moto Z. If you use the phone sparingly, it can achieve that kind of longevity. During standby, the phone almost doesn’t consume any battery life at all,  it seems Motorola really optimized the device. The only thing that’s seems to take a toll on the battery is activating Internet connection. If you go easy on the Internet surfing, the battery will last you a whole day. I once lasted 2 days without charging the device while using it to take photos, notes and some gaming.
When it comes to charging, the Moto Z is a champ. The Turbo Power charger that comes with the device is the fastest I have ever used. It only takes slightly over an hour to charge from 0-100%.

Moto Mods

jhh

bass boost atta

This is the headline feature of the Moto Z. Moto Mods are basically hardware attachments that are magnetically connected to the device to extend its functionality. The back of the Moto Z has pics that integrate seamless with other pins on the mods.
The good people at Lenovo have us a JBL Sound Boost Mod for testing. It’s a two speaker unit with a built in kickstand. The unit attaches easily to the device and instantly outputs the audio from the phone. It is super loud and crisp. Even at the highest volume level it doesn’t distort. I found myself using it a lot when showing videos to a group of friends or playing a game.
Other mods are available such as a power pack mod for extra battery, an insta-share mod which serves as a portable projector, and moto shell for personalizing the back cover. You get one moto shell in the box.
There is a lot of potential in this mods and we are happy to see that other manufacturers are adopting them such as the keyboard mod being crowd funded at Indiegogo.

Conclusion

The Moto Z is an amazing phone that I would recommend to anyone looking for a unique high end device. It has slimmest dimensions in the world, a beautiful AMOLED display, great pictures, decent battery life coupled with super fast charging, chart topping performance, and lastly, the advanced Moto Mods.
Its competitors include the class leading Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the HTC 10 which is very rare in Kenya, the one plus 3 such has the same screen size and internals but for a lower price tag, and the LG G5 which comes has its own solution for moto mods. None of this however gives you a powerful package in such a thin head turning form factor.

Edusko is Helping Parents Access Good and Affordable Schools for their Children

0

Founded in June, 2015, Edusko is an online marketplace that connects middle and high income earning families with good and affordable private schools in Nigeria and beyond.

The platform enables parents to easily compare available schools and make their choice, and also has systems in place to verify listed schools.

Edusko was founded by a team of 4 young education marketing professionals and programmers, with Jide Ayegbusi and Deji Ajala as co-founders, and they believe that the services provided on Edusko also have an indirect impact on the nation’s GDP. The logic is that since quality education could easily be found on their platform, Nigerian parents might no longer have to travel abroad in search for it.

According to co-founder, Jide Ayegbusi, “one of our major competitive advantages is the affordability of the schools on our platform. Parents get huge discounts on their children’s school fees even from the leading international schools”.

Over 2000 parents are already making use of Edusko’s current pool of over 3000 listings to find good and affordable schools for their wards, and besides Nigeria, the platform directory also extends to South Africa, Ghana, Canada, and the UK.

This Startup is Helping Lagosians in Nigeria to Pay Their House Rents

0

With a population of over 170million, the real estate industry in Nigeria is one that continues to boom. While a few invest in properties, many others rent apartments to live in for a specific number of years.

In Lagos especially, more than half of the population stay in rented apartments, and property owners are getting creative, providing different options that suits individual/family needs. From flats of 2-4 bedrooms, to one-room apartments; where they share bathrooms and kitchen with other house occupants and the ones that are termed self-contain; where the renters have a room, bathroom and kitchen to themselves.

One major challenge many face is the ability to pay the ever-increasing cost of rent, and threats of being evicted by house owners. This challenge is what Ogunyemi Damilare is set out to address with his startup, PayMyRent.

Ogunyemi Damilare founded PayMyRent on the 10th of May, 2016 to help tackle all issues associated with paying house rent in Lagos. At its core, PayMyRent, takes up the burden of paying for users annual rent by providing loans and allowing repayment to be spread on a monthly basis.

PayMyRent claims to give loans ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦2,500,000, but this depends on an applicant’s monthly salary. The amount an applicant can access is uslally communicated after review of submitted applications. Interest rates also apply on the loans, ranging from about 3 to 5%, depending on the user’s credit rating.

According to Ogunyemi, “the path towards applying for a loan is quite fast. You can apply on the website and, provided all requirements are met, get your application processed “within minutes”, with funds deposited into your account”.

For applicants to complete a successful loan request, they are required to present 6 months bank statement showing last six salary entries; copy of employment letter/letter of confirmation/recent promotion letter; NURAN Compliant post-dated cheque from salary account/direct debit mandate for savings account; recent utility bill; 2 recent passport photos and copy of staff identity card and copy of pension statement or Tax ID Number.

With the number of Lagosians still under rented apartments, PayMyRent no doubt has a chance of survival, as many would find the platform interesting. But question is, does PayMyRent have enough cash to go round?

Moto Z Keyboard Mod could be a reality very soon

0

From the Moto Z unboxing article we just posted the other day, we mentioned Moto Mods, they are unique hardware units that you magnetically attach to your Moto device to add extra functionality. The Moto Mod we tested was the JBL Sound Boost. It left us with a very positive experience due to its easy integration and amazing sound.

Motorola vowed that they will push the technology to developers out there to come up with innovative mods. It seems that their strategy has been working. A company by the name Livermorium has started a campaign at Indiegogo to gather funds to manufacture a Physical Keyboard Mod .

For those not familiar with Indiegogo, it’s a crowd funding website where startups publish their idea and people contribute money to make the idea a reality.

The company requires a total of $100,000 (KES 10,000,000) to actualize the Keyboard Mod. So far, a total of $34,623 has been contributed and there is still a month to go before the campaign is closed. If you fancy such a mod, you should consider chipping in. The retail price of the keyboard is set at 120 once it is produced. However, contributing $60 towards the goal secures you a free black mod once they start shipping. $80 gets you a choice of gold, black or white color mod. $200 gets you a limited edition mod in which ever color you desire, $500 guarantees you a laser engraved edition and lastly $600 will ship you 10 mods for selling.

We hope that this momentum goes on and we see more manufacturers get on board with the mods technology. It is a breakthrough feature that once you start using, you will wish all phones had it as we will illustrate on the Moto Z review we are working on. Remember, one doesn’t have to possess the Moto Z to take advantage of mods; they also work on the cheaper Moto Z play as well as the big battery Moto Z Force edition.

Why Chinese smartphone brands will still dominates in Kenyan markets.

0

Over the past couple of years, China’s top smartphone makers have become one of the biggest on the market. The country’s most successful manufacturers have shifted away from cheap me-too models to compete more seriously for the high end of the market. Recent years Chines brands have crushed their presence in the local market with low-cost, medium and high-end smartphones, providing customers with a wide range of internet-enabled devices.

The rising Internet usage to connect on social media, growth of app based services and the penetration of internet in the country has also driven the high demand for smartphones. The total number of mobile Internet subscriptions grew to more than 21 million last year, up from 14 million a year earlier.

Pricing.

Chinese budget smartphones range between Sh5, 000 and Sh20, 000, where 66% of the country occupied by the youth and 46% are unemployed hence many will go for chines smartphone where their budged range.   Hong Kong-based Infinix, for instance, has sold more than 500,000 units since entering the Kenyan market in 2014, riding on e-commerce to cut distribution costs and enabling lower prices. .The entry of Techno, Huawei, Lenovo, Oppo and Infinix into Kenyan market has exerted downward pressure on smartphone prices in a market teeming.

China phones are so cheap because there are less costs of marketing and advertising included in the price. The value of the hardware of a customary phone only makes one quarter of the selling price. By buying a Smartphone you also pay for (apart from the phone itself) the manufacturer’s marketing. Companies as Samsung, HTC or Apple invest millions in advertising in TV, the internet or posters. These costs make the prices rise and have to be paid by the customer. Additionally you also pay for the manufacturer’s name. For a China phone there are none of these costs.

Quality.

Mobile handsets top the list of items that traders ordered from China last year, underlining the popularity of the low-priced smartphones in the Kenyan market despite concerns over quality. Many will have to go for them because they offer same spec with leading smartphone brands like iPhone and Samsung.

A China phone has the same performance as a Smartphone of a well-known label because they are manufactured with the same hardware and technology. Even Smartphone manufacturers as Samsung, HTC or Sony have their Phones produced in China and buy the various components (display, camera, processor…) from other manufacturers there. Chinese brands as Xiaomi, THL or Cubot get their hardware from the same manufacturers as the great and popular brands. Therefore only the name makes the difference, not the technology.

Phone specs.

China phones use – as most of the well-known manufacturers – Google’s Android operating system. Often they even get more frequent and quicker updates, as this is for example the case with Samsung. Chines phones have fancy features like dual lenses at the back camera for sharper pictures, unibody metal design and fingerprint sensor. Also, they offer’s long lasting batteries which deliver up to  24 hours of talk-time and standby time of up to 250 hours.

For a long time it was said that Phones from China were nothing more than bad replicas of the well-known brands and that they didn’t work. In fact, this was right a couple of years ago. Now, however, there is a new generation of China Smartphones, which blow the branded phones away.

WhatsApp brings back the text based status update after user backlash.

0

Since whatsapp was acquired by Facebook, it has been very vibrant in pushing new features. I have always looked forward to the next update, that was until the 24 hours status feature was released.

At first, I didn’t understand the update. Why would they cap it to only 24 hours, it’s simply not enough time to have all your friends see your status content . But after trying it several times it slowly grew on me. This whole time I kept missing the text based status; turns out I wasn’t the only one. There was a global backlash around the lack of the text status.

Fortunately, the whatsapp team has been listening and is on track to bringing it back. The evidence of this return comes from the whatsapp beta app. This app is used to test new features before they are rolled out to the stable app. Additionally, a statement from whatsapp was issued stating that the text update will appear next to profile names when a user is looking at group information or trying to start a new conversation.

Still on the whataspp beta app, there was once a feature that enabled users to delete or edit a text they had already sent if the recipient had not read it yet. We can only hope that this too makes it to the stable app soon. For now, let’s rejoice on the comeback of a beloved feature.

Samsung Galaxy S8 to come with 1000fps slow-motion video.

0

Samsung Galaxy S8 rumors are coming in from left and right. Most of the times the leaks are repetitive. However, every once in a while you get a really juicy piece of intel.  According to the latest leak, the S8 will come with a 12 MP camera. Now before you frown that Samsung has retained the same resolution that was in the previous S7, this new iteration comes with a whopping 1,000 fps slow motion video. Now recently Sony Xperia XZ Premium made headlines with its record breaking 960fps but it seems that glory will be short-lived.
Sony achieved that by using its new sensor the Sony IMX 400. Samsung had traditionally used Sony sensors and even mixed them with Samsung ones depending on regions. This time round, reports say that S8 will not employ the Sony sensors. We are assuming that the in house ISOCELL Samsung cameras will be utilized.
Other amazing tech on the camera will be a new Iris sensor. It will utilize a 3.7 MP scanner along side a 8MP selfie camera. We recently had an encounter with such a scanner on the very affordable Fero Iris and it was quite a positive experience.  This, however, won’t be the first time that the company is working with Iris scanners. The ill- fated Galaxy Note 7 was the first phone in the world to have it. Samsung will only have to build on that knowledge.

Note : Neither earphones nor USB Type C were packaged in the box. Sometimes reviews units have some components missing. There is a chance that these items will be available in the final retail box.

Design

side 1 side 2

Moto Z has the most breathtaking design of all time. The metallic frame with rounded edges blend seamlessly with the 2.5D glass covering the front. The back has glass at the top and bottom antenna lines, with metal in between. The metal had subtle lines on it which would lead one into thinking that it is solar powered. But the most pleasing aspect of the device is how slim it is, at 5.2mm,the Moto Z is the thinnest phone from a global manufacturer. It is simply breath-taking. On top of that, the golden color model that I have reflects light with its rear panel making the phone shine like a piece of jewelry.

display back

The only negative is in the easily oiled-up nature of the back panel and the unconventional front panel; there is a finger print scanner below the screen which weirdly doesn’t double as a home button. The phone uses on-screen keys instead. Most of the time I found myself pressing the fingerprint sensor expecting to be taken to the home screen. Also, I have some reservations with the sensors that are located next to the fingerprint, they are unsightly. I only wish that Motorola would have covered them. Fortunately, they are invisible on the black model. The good news is that the finger print is very fast and can save up to 5 fingers.

What I found surprising was the location of the speaker. The earpiece doubles as the main speaker of the phone. Perhaps this was a move made to keep the phone so slim. Nonetheless, the speaker is loud enough to hear even in a noisy room so you won’t miss any calls.

Display

amoled

The display of the Moto Z is stunning; the AMOLED brings out rich colors. The saturation, however, is toned down. Unlike other AMOLED screens, the colors have a natural look even at “vivid setting”. Samsung screens have their colors popping out more. To some, the conservative and natural color representation might be a plus, others would have wanted more punch considering that this is an AMOLED display. Despite where you stand with color representation, you will greatly appreciate the sharpness of the screen. At QHD resolution, the Moto Z has over 400 pixels per inch. This means that even the smallest details will be very sharp with no pixilation whatsoever.  All in all, the screen has richer colors than what you would find on an LCD screen and on top of that, the 2.5D glass on it is very smooth to the touch which adds to an overall premium feeling.

Performance and software

Screenshot_20170317-004659

As you would expect from a high end phone like this one, the performance is to notch. The snapdragon 820 with 4gb RAM is the same configuration found in the Samsung Galaxy S7. The phone simply flies through the Android 6.0. Moto Z has stock software, which only helps the phone run leaner and faster. Only one app is not stock, the Moto app. This app holds all the magic that makes the phone unique from other stock software phones. The Moto app holds the options for activating and setting up the Moto Voice which can be used to control the phone hands free. This voice feature has been a signature of Motorola phones since the days it was owned by Google. The app also holds settings for Moto Display which senses when you are close and automatically turns on the display. The sensors below the screen are meant to make this feature flawless. Finally, the app has the Moto Actions, they let you do things like flip to mute, shrink the screen to one handed mode using one swipe and much more.

Screenshot_20170317-004535

During the review period, I got a notification for an update to Android 7.0. The update brings along native split screen multitasking among other features. I will install the update and tell you how it runs on this device.

Camera

cam

The 13 MP rear camera has dual-LED flash, which are also dual tone meaning that they preserve the natural color of the subject. It also has optical image stabilization for steady video recording and a hidden laser focus. The front facing camera is 5MP with an LED flash for low light shots. Initially impressions of the camera are positive with the phone taking decent pictures during bright and low light. Most impressive is how the flash doesn’t blow out the scenes. A more detailed photography dissection will be on the full review so make sure to look out for that.

In case you want more control with the snaps, there is a powerful manual mode dubbed “professional mode”. It has sliders to help you adjust exposure, ISO,  white balance and more, the mode comes in handy under low light. I have managed to squeeze out more light into the images using this mode.

Battery

The battery is only 2600 mAh. Lenovo says that it can last for a whole day but we will have to put it to the test to prove that. On a positive note, the battery maintains its percentage while in standby very well. I once left it at 97% before going to bed at night; it was that same percentage when I woke up about 7 hours later. In addition, the charging is really fast. This phone takes less than an hour and a half to fill up from zero to 100%. It is so amazing at first you will think that percentage meter is playing tricks on you.

Moto Mods

jhh

This is the phones claim to fame feature. It is Motorola’s shot at the modular phone concept called Project Ara, that they had kick started right before that division was taken by Google. LG G5 had tried to do a modular design but the Motorola’s approach is miles better. With LG you had to remove the phone’s bottom section, which would turn off the device , before interchanging the modules. On the Moto Z, all you have to do is snap the module in the magnetic back cover of the phone and the integration happens automatically, thanks to an array of pins located on the bottom rear.

All sorts of modules, called Moto Mods, have been made. Inside the box you get a free style shell mod whose purpose is to protect the pins as well as add a little personality to the device.

bass boost top

bass boost

atta

My favorite was the JBL Sound Boost mod. It is like a portable stereo speaker, but much smaller and connects via magnets instead of tedious Bluetooth pairing. It was really loud and had punchy bass. Even at the highest volume, it did not distort.

More manufacturers are producing mods for Motorola, we can only hope that this trend keeps up and we get a thriving ecosystem of this promising and genius technology.

Samsung to Live Stream 2018 Olympics in Virtual Reality

0

Samsung has been keen on its efforts on VR. The company has been vigorously pushing the platform forward by releasing new VR hardware and services that add value to its Gear VR line. On the 2018 Olympics in Korea, Samsung plans on live streaming the games to Gear VR customers all over the world. This will be the first time in the world that live streaming has occurred on virtual reality. The news comes at a great time when the  price of the Gear VR just got slashed by half from $100 to $50 (KES 5,000) in the US. Other parts of the world still get a reduced price of KES 8,000 ($80) from the company’s official website.

To make the ambitious live streaming a success, Samsung has already met with the ICT vice minister of Korea, delegates from LG and also members of KT telecom. Pulling off such a move will require a very fast and reliable network with the qualities of 5G service. Korea has always been at the forefront of network advancements, it’s also the home country of Samsung and LG so there is a very high likelihood that the project will be a success.

During the previous Olympics at Rio, Samsung gave their VR customers access to exclusive pre-recorded footage of sports and other events happening in the arena. This time round, the company is looking to build on that momentum.

Virtual Reality as a whole has been embraced by many developers and content providers. They include Netflix which has VR movies, Facebook 360 for watching videos, and Google Daydream for apps and all kinds of other VR content. The unique feeling of being immersed at the center of the action as if you were in the middle of the pitch or the battle field is what gives the technology its appeal. In Kenya, selected Samsung shops offer a first-hand experience of the VR right in the store. All you need to start enjoying VR is the headset which goes for around KES 8,000 to 10,000 and a supported smartphone. Currently the Samsung Gear VR only supports the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy S7 and lastly the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Game of Thrones Season 7: Hundreds of thousands of fans live-streamed ice melting to reveal premier date.

Internet video streaming has come a long way. Nowadays , people do not have to follow TV scheduling like they used to back in the day.  That form of TV was very inconveniencing, if you weren’t seated in front of the television when your favorite program was being aired, then u would miss the show. Forever. Sure, the same system exist in most households, but at least for today, most shows are on YouTube, you can stream and catch up on what you missed.

One of the most streamed shows of all time, HBO’s Game of thrones, also called a Song of Ice and Fire, just took this new trend to new heights. So season 6 ended a while back, it was a mega hit so much so that people that had never watched the series bought season 1 to 5 just to understand what was the fuss with the epic season 6. Now, fans from all around the world are eagerly waiting for season 7, and the crew behind the show took advantage of this.  In a classic movie production style, the game of thrones team decided to use suspense to reveal the premier date for season 7.

They curved the date on a solid material and had ice melted around it. They then had cameras recording the action and live streaming the ice melting through Facebook Live. Fans of the show were then asked to comment with the word “fire” to have the melting accelerated by a flamethrower. Now, logically, the ice would melt and reveal the date; it was quite a fitting act considering the series comes from a book called “A song of ice and fire”

Over 100,000 people were tuned in for over one hour of watching ice melting excruciatingly slow. However, the stunt had its fair share of issues, Technical difficulties temporarily stopped the streaming twice.  Some say the two disruptions were to melt the ice faster  behind the scenes. Others on social media especially on Twitter made jokes on what would be revealed when the ice finally melts.

The fire finally won over the ice and the date was shown to be July 16, 2017. In addition, the producers of the series said that the last season (season 8) would be the shortest, only 6 episodes long. All we can do now is hope that the upcoming season 7 will be magnificent as season 6 was.

Huawei P10 Lite goes straight to pre-order without being launched first.

0

Huawei thought, “launches are so boring, let’s be different and skip them all together” at least that’s what I think was going on in their minds. The Huawei P10 Lite just got on pre-order on an Italian online retailer called Monclick. The site exposes the phone in its full glory revealing all its specifications.

Sure, the P10 Lite has been in the rumor mill for a while just like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 is as well as the LG G6 did, but it’s always good to see the specs verified by a creditable source. This time round the rumors were correct. The Huawei P10 Lite came with a 5.2” Full HD display, powered by Kirin 655,4GB RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Calling the shots is Android 7.0, running under the EMUi 5.1 skin of Huawei phones.  The cameras include a 12MP sensor with an f2. 0 sensor and 8MP front facing selfie shooter.  This whole package is wrapped in a glass black and front body with a metallic frame sandwiched in between.  A finger print scanner keeps the back camera company on the glass rear. A 3000mAh battery is onboard too, and is quickly filled by fast charge technology. As you can see, this being the “lite” version, a lot of the bells and whistles of its bigger brother the ,Huawei P10, are missing. For instance, neither the dual camera technology nor the Leica fine tuning is available in this package, but that’s the whole purpose of the “lite” category, offering the same DNA as the flagship but at a fraction of the price.

The Italian site even has the price stated, the phone will retail at €350. The package is reasonably priced in line with the Huawei product culture. A quick Google translation from the Italian phrase “Prenotabile: Disponibile dal giorno 11/04/2017” reveals that the phone will be available in stores on April 11th,this year.

Google makes the internet captcha feature invisible

0

For a long time, surfing the web has been accompanied by a “I’m not a robot” feature that tries to verify that you are human. This feature might have come off as a nag to many but it is a necessary evil that is meant to protect automated software from negatively exploiting a website.

A while back, Google acquired reCaptcha, the company behind the feature. The initial reason for the purchase was to assist in scanning books to turn them into digital collections under the Google Books platform.

Over the years, Captcha has found more and not many associated it with the Books application. Today, the feature is mostly known for the verification process.  Fortunately, Google has embraced this new usage and has been taking steps to make the whole verification process easier to the masses.

The last iteration saw an upgrade that only asked the user to tick a box next to the word “I’m not a robot”. This update checked the manner in which the box was ticked to determine the natural behavior of a human being. Before this iteration, there were other modes that made you type skewed up letters, and others that made you select certain objects from a collage of pictures. I personally liked the latter, it was like a game with a purpose attached to it. However, the collage mode would quickly get annoying if one was in a hurry and kept picking on the wrong pictures.

Now Google have been listening to these concerns and is now deploying an invisible Captcha feature. The feature uses machine learning to analyze a user’s browsing behavior .It then uses the gathered information to determine if that subject is a robot or not. This is a very intuitive method, it not only makes the process hustle free, but also makes surfing the web a breeze with the entire safety tech running behind the scenes.

One Plus 3T Colette launched, a very limited edition fashion oriented phone.

0

The One Plus has a been a very interesting company, it is among the youngest in the mobile manufacturing field but also among the fastest rising. What makes the company special is the flagship-rivaling hardware it produces and sells at very affordable prices. It has been making headlines for all sorts of things from weird marketing stunts to new products iterations. This time round, the company has made a partnership with a French fashion house, called Colette, to produce the One Plus 3T Colette Edition.

abouttop

Colette is a brand that has been in the fashion industry since 1997, it prides itself as an experience which offers “a never ending assortment of fashion, high-tech, arts, streetwear, beauty and waters.” The company decided to team up with One Plus to release the device as a celebration to their 20th anniversary.

The One Plus 3T Colette Edition is, for the most part, very similar to the previous 3T, available in Kenya through Avechi stores, but there are some minor differences. The Colette Edition comes with the Colette logo on a black paint job, a whopping 128 GB internal storage with no expansion slot, and a higher price tag of €479 (KES 52,877 according to current exchange rates ). Only 250 units will be produced, all of which will be available in the Colette Paris store on 21st March at 11 AM.

The remaining specs are very high end and similar to the usual 3T. They include 5.5 Full HD AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 821 coupled with a whopping 6GB RAM. Photography is done with a 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 16 MP front facing camera. The system is under the command of Android 6.0 and powered by a 3400 mAh which supports the legendary Dash Charge feature that fills the battery to 60% in only 30 minutes. A finger print sensor is on-board as well and located under the screen.

If this phone follows the sales tradition of the other products from One Plus, there is chance that the stock will end before the store closes that day.

Why You Need To Reset Your Twitter Account And Get Rid of 3rd Party App.

0

Today, several high-profile Twitter accounts were compromised, displaying messages featuring swastikas.

According to a tweet from Twitter support, the company identified an issue caused by a third-party app affecting some users, but wouldn’t specify whether this was directly related to the hack.

BBC North America, Amnesty International and the European Parliament were among the Twitter accounts impacted by the hack.

The hack is a good reminder to check your Twitter account and determine which third-party apps have access. To do this from a web browser, click on your profile picture in the top right corner, and go to “Settings and Privacy.”

Scroll down along the left navigation menu until you get to Apps. Clicking on that will show you what apps have access to your Twitter feed. Now’s a good time to start cleaning up.

If you see an app you haven’t used for a while or just aren’t comfortable using any longer, you can revoke access. For example, my account still allowed access to TwitPic, which shut down in 2014. Oops.

Also, before you allow any service third-party access to your Twitter account, make sure to confirm it’s legit. When in doubt, deny access.

Samsung Galaxy S8 to Come in Amethyst Color

0

For all the Samsung users who lost faith in their Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 there is hope for variety with the new Samsung that is said to be introduced on March 29th. For Samsung, this will be the opportunity created for redemption after the Note 7 disaster. The new smartphone has been said to come in multiple color options, including white and Gold. Numerous hints have been aired on the Samsung website as they have been asking customers to sign up with their email address to get early notifications about the new Galaxy 8. Customers have also been given a segment to vote on the color that they would prefer for the New Galaxy. The options are black, silver and amethyst.

This is different from previous reports which suggest that in place of Amethyst, the color Violet would be available when the phones are announced. Violet is quite similar to Amethyst, so it is more than possible that all Samsung did was change the names of these tints. It is evident that Samsung is trying to make the Galaxy S8 appealing to a variety of customers especially because it is the first phone announced by the company, after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

Although it is uncertain how the amethyst color will blend with the smaller bezels on the upcoming phone, especially since the Galaxy S8 is said to feature a 5.8-inch display, while the Galaxy S8 Plus will have a 6.2-inch screen. Black has been said to be the preferable color as it will fluently merge with the larger display and make top and bottom bezels almost indistinguishable when the screen is off. However, the preference for varied color variants is subjective, some users prefer their phones black, while others enjoy lively tones and shades.

Google and Levi’s Tech Jacket is Now Available

0

Technology is ever evolving and has been constantly changing our lives with new gadgets coming our way. When someone once told me that everything will be driven by technology I laughed away as I said that clothes would never be a gadget. Here we are now, 2017 and two very different corporate companies have collaborated to bring to us wearable technology. The jacket, which Levi introduced this week was made in partnership with Google’s project Jacquard a division within the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects. After two years they have come up with Project Jacquard Commuter Trucker jacket.

Picture a jacket that is almost as good as your phone in every way. The jacket has conductive fibers that are woven directly into clothing these conductive fibers are flexible and can be washed — though the actual electronics are handled by the cufflink, which you have to remove before you wash the jacket. Any motions you make on the left cuff of the jacket’s sleeve register as touch inputs just like a screen. The process works just like any phone that connects through a wireless system. The jacket connects to your smartphone via a Bluetooth attachment that clips on as a cufflink.

The coolest thing about this jacket is the fabric of the left sleeve. It has a rechargeable tag tucked inside it. On the whole, this is one kind of a jacket as it is also smart. Because it is made up of conductive yarn it helps in all round touch functionality powered by the tag. The tag comes with support for USB charging, which makes it pretty easy for plug and charge. The functionalities on the Commuter jacket include playing music, opening lock screen, managing calendar, Google Maps, and much more as it pairs with your smartphone. Only snag being that it can’t work seamlessly with an iPhone.

Just by using finger movements you can check the time on your phone,  play-pause-forward the music, along with other features. To connect your phone to the Commuter jacket, you have to install “Project Jacquard” app on your phone and from the app you can pick gestures that you want for different functions. Levi’s also said that they are working on adding more gestures in the future, which would be helpful in making the jacket smarter.

How To Use Social Media To Lift Your Business Returns.

0

Social Media is having a major impact on the way that B2C businesses drive sales during seasonal periods of the year, such as Christmas, New Year and Easter. And the social content that you circulate to your business connections can have a huge impact on sales.   However for you to become a super advertiser and make your product sell there are a number of factors you have to consider. The first step is for you to select the right practices and platforms.

Where does your target audience exist mostly? Is it twitter or Facebook? Instagram, or snapchat? Don’t just jump into trending hashtags with your product ad; guys will never take you seriously. Maximize the impact on your followers by selecting those practices and platforms which suit the core strategy of your business.

Once you realise the platform with a larger portion of your target audience, set up goals on how to use the identified platform to achieve your target. Social platforms are to be used for driving leads to your site and generating e-commerce purchases. Therefore your goals should be in tandem with the size of your company and your content on social media should be well reflected on your company website.

Thirdly, you need to understand the right time to engage your audience. Most people are at work and you don’t expect a large audience to be very active during working hours.

Nonetheless there are specific times, during mid-breaks and afternoons when there is not much to do and people are just roaming online. Instead of jumping into a tending hashtags, start one on your product that is attractive enough.

Simple tips you can weight with your target market.

Know what’s hot. If you can post information that is current and relevant to your niche and most importantly your customer, you’ll give your audience a reason to read your posts on social media and from there visit your website.

Social media is speaking a new language. And the language is one of images, videos and infographics. These types of media are generating excellent engagement numbers for businesses that have made it standard practice to employ them in a pertinent and creative manner.

Embrace change and be in the know. When a social media platform changes its guidelines, you have two options. You can take the change in stride and adapt or give up.

Socially Enable Your Website. Ensure your website can be shared across multiple social channels like Facebook, Twitter and more by the viewers.

People like to buy when they begin to know and trust you and your brand.

Nintendo Switch, a hybrid handheld & in-house gaming console

0

Nintendo has had quite a merry go round history when it comes to the gaming industry. The Nintendo Wii was its claim to fame; it outsold the Sony Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 by a huge margin. This could be credited to the fact that the company caters for the casual player which is a market that covers a wider audience than that of hardcore gamers that Playstation and Sony targets. Nintendo’s luck ended when it launched the successor to the Wii, the Nintendo Wii U. It performed poorly in the market and was no match to the great PS4 and Xbox One. The company went back to the drawing board and came up with a new solution, the Nintendo Switch.

switch

nintendo-switch-console-4923

The switch is a very unique console; it is a handheld gaming device that can instantly be transformed into an in-house console. The system includes the actual switch console with comes with a 6.2 inch screen. To turn the system into an in-house console, you simply dock the Switch console into a docking station which instantly displays the game on the TV. The dock is connected to the TV via HDMI.

Switch-gamepad

The console has J –Con controllers that can either be attached on either side of the Switch display (making it look like a PS Vita) to play on the go or can be snapped to a grip device that would create a traditional looking gaming controller. This latter mode is perfect when playing on the TV.  The button arrangement is similar to that of the Xbox console.

The Nintendo Switch has a battery that can be used 2.5 -6.5 hours depending on the game being played while the J con’s batter can last up to 20 hours. Speaking of games, the system uses small cartridges that can be slotted into the device. Moreover, users can simply buy games online via the eShop. To keep kids from putting the cartridges in their mouth, a bitter coating was put on them which is quite a neat touch. Another neat move is the act that Fifa, from EA sports, is making a comeback to the Nintendo platform.

Nintendo-Switch-bundle

In the box you find the Switch console, the J-con controllers, the grip device, the dock, a HDMI cable and a power adapter, no games are included. The Nintendo Switch will retail for $299 or KES 29,999, while the games cost around KES 1,500 ($15). That makes it cost the same as the standard PS4 and Xbox or even a bit higher now that discounts on those two are available everywhere. Despite this fact, the Switch keeps getting sold out, so much so that it has become the company’s fastest selling console from Nintendo. It will be interesting to see if it breaks the sales records made by the Wii.

Tecno Camon CX and CX Air Leaked Specs and Exclusive Images

0

Just the other day, Tecno sent out invites for the launch of its new phones, the Tecno Camon CX and the Tecno Camon CX Air, the X moniker represents 10 in roman numbers. This will be a successor to the selfie oriented Tecno Camon C9. The name Air can be seen as a hint to a super slim phone. Apple has used that name to refer to their thin iPads and even Macbooks.

Camon-C10

Tecno choose Kenya for the Global Launch, this emphasizes the notion that the country is truly the Tech Hub of Africa,  no other country has seen the unveiling of these two phones. Fortunately, the rumor mill has already gathered some of the expected specifications. The Camon CX and CX Air are said to be 5.6mm thin effectively making them among the slimmest phones in the world and living up to the ‘Air’ name. Other leaks say that the actual waistline is 7.75 mm with the 5.6mm being the visual slim size. There are two sets of specs being rumored, they include,

BlackBerry Aurora is not a Blackberry phone, let me explain

0

BlackBerry has been in the rumor mill for a while now. Yesterday, it finally got launched but to the surprise of many, the company behind it goes by the name BB Merah Putih. It is of Indonesian origin and has the license to make phones bearing the Blackberry brand name but only for that country. As we had started earlier in the Blackberry Keyone unveiling, TCL also has the license to distribute berries for most parts of the world.
Indonesia is a unique country since Blackberry had a huge demand in that country.  Even before the TCL deal, Blackberry phones still continued to be sold in that region.
Back to the Aurora, it comes 5.5 inch 720p, Snapdragon 425 coupled with 4Gb RAM which are enough to push the Android 7.0  and DTEK software preloaded in the phone. The camera section is endowed with 13MP rear sensor and a 8MP front facing one. Keeping the lights on is a 3,000 mAH battery. Surprisingly, it is the first Blackberry to feature dual SIM capability.
At the moment, the phone is available for pre-order in Indonesia at a low price of $260 (KES 26,000). We can only hope that these iterations won’t dilute the values that once defined BlackBerry

HDR Screens: All you need to know about this new tech trend

0

You might have realized from the announcements made at MWC 2017 that flagship phones are coming with the so-called “HDR Screens” or “High Dynamic Range screens”. This technology has seen some applications in TVs, computers monitors, and even gaming consoles such as the new PS4 Pro and Xbox One S. Not until recently that the trend went to mobile devices pioneering on the ill-fated Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

spiralbinder-2016-18

Firstly, HDR on cameras should not be confused with the one on screens. Cameras produce HDR photos by taking many pictures with different exposure levels then combining them into one snap that has better rendering. On screens, the tech is much more advanced.

lg-32ud99-1024x802-100698961-orig

What makes HDR screen better is a combination of factors which include much larger color representation. Non-HDR screens can output 16 million colors but HDR goes all the way up to a whopping 1 billion color-output. Moreover, it gives images that have richer contrast and darker blacks than traditional variants; the brightness is also much higher than the standard screens.  The result is images that are close to what a human eye sees in the natural world. For instance, with HDR, you can tell something that is “really dark” from another thing that is “just dark”, standard screens or SDR simply shows a general shade of black. Dynamic HDR improves on the Static HDR even further.

gdh

32312486513_cace6671b0_h

HDR is not tied to resolution, that’s why LG G6 has it on a 2K (1440p) display and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium applied it on a 4K (2160p) panel. In addition, OLED screens tend to render HDR images better than LCD ones. This is because OLEDs have independent pixels that can be completely turn off to give a truly dark color. In the same light, not all HDR screens are created equal, there are several formats available.

HDR10 is the most commonly used format, its open source nature has played a key role in its popularity. Game consoles, TVs and blu-ray players have widely utilized this variant. All other formats in the market use the HDR10 as a basis and build upon it.

Dolby Vision is another HDR format tuned by Dolby. It is fundamentally HDR10 but on steroids. It has increased color gamut of up to 138% of SDR screens and can also reach up to 4000 nits of brightness. This level of brightness is above any TV ever made, HDR or not. Phone screens have not yet been able to crack the 1000 nits brightness level. Unfortunately, to enjoy this added benefits, your device hardware has to support Dolby Vision, existing HDR screens cannot get this improved aspect via software update, so it is a point to bear in mind when shopping for this next-gen displays. Netflix and Amazon have adopted this format of HDR, this will only serve to make it grow in popularity in future.

Technicolor also got into this bandwagon with its Advanced HDR technology. This variant promises to provide all viewers with a consistent experience by delivering HDR to any device regardless of it being SDR or HDR.  The technology will use the capabilities of your device to provide the best HDR rendering possible when watching content shot in high dynamic range.

So next time you see HDR in phone specifications you will be familiar with the tech. It will be interesting to see how HDR grows overtime but signs are pointing to quite a bright future.

Coca-Cola Expands Its Tech Startup Incubator

The well-known beverage giant, Coca-cola Co has expanded its three year old tech incubator Bridge program. According to this the multinational soft drinks leader has now partnered with Mercedes-Benz, owned German-based Daimler AG, and Turner Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. (TWX), in a joint effort to mentor startups in return for early access to new technology. The Coke Bridge program has been working with several research and development (R&D) groups in an effort to bring different players that have common technology interests.

The program is going to going to be active for six months and will have new participants that will range from early stage to growth startups, with software solutions that are ready to be for businesses.

This initiative will be supporting young companies in terms of market training, general mentorship and access to Coke’s corporate sponsors, the startups will be given the opportunity to pilot within Coca-Coca and license products to the beverage maker and its partners.

The participants will be expected to host one of five core themes including  Consumer Engagement, Consumer Retail, Supply Chain, Marketing Innovation and Health & Wellness.

Unlike some incubators which entail equity or intellectual property (IP) ownership from the startups, the Bridge program lacks any such requirements, demonstrating Coca-Cola’s commitment to nurturing innovation in the food and beverage industry with the intention of adopting the technology before competitors.

So you think your octa core can beat the quad core? Think again.

0

Every time you look at smartphone’s specifications, you find that processors are labelled either dual core, quad core, octa core or deca core. These names indicate the number of cores available. However, more cores does not necessarily translate to more power, there are a lot more considerations. We will go through the major types of smartphone processor cores to help you understand the fine print next time you check out phone specifications.

ARM

ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) Holdings is the company that is at the center of mobile processor cores. The company provides the architecture that acts as a blueprint to manufacturers of mobile CPUs (Central processing units). The current architecture version is ARMv8 it comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit variants. 64 bit is equivalent to what laptops and desktops have been using as their standard, all it means is that mobile applications using this higher bit level can access more RAM than was previously possible. The ARMv8 has brought forth 5 processor cores that are running in almost every modern smartphone out there, they include Cortex A35, Cortex A53, Cortex A57, Cortex A72, and the latest Cortex A73. These 5 cores are the ones that are used in every smartphone apart from Apple and Intel mobile chip-sets.

The cores are divided into two distinct groups namely, power saving group and high performance group. The power saving cores are focused on carrying out simple tasks such as sending texts, making calls and other basic phone activities. Their main aim is to conserve as much battery life as possible. These cores are the ones that are most active in phones and also come with frequencies that do not normally exceed 1.8GHZ. Power savings cores include Cortex A35 and Cortex A53. The high performance group, as the name suggests, are for doing the heavy lifting. They are the least utilized cores in a phone; they only get activated when playing processor intensive games, recording 4k resolution videos and when running complex apps such as photo and video editors. The 3 remaining cores are all in this group.

ARM Cortex A35

This is the latest power saving core from ARM. No processor from the major manufacturers is utilizing this core. It is an ultra-power saving core that would be most suitable in smart watches due to their small batteries and their low powered tasks which include fitness tracking and syncing notifications.

ARM Cortex A53

This is the most utilized and most versatile core of them all. It is found in all tiers of smartphones from entry level to high end phones. It mostly comes in either quad core configuration or octa core. The popularity of this core can be credited to its power saving features, its decent performance for everyday tasks and low production cost. It can handle HD and Full HD displays when coupled with a capable graphics processing unit (GPU).

ARM Cortex A57

big-LITTLE-ARM-officially-unveils-Cortex-A7-Image1_101

This core was released the same time as the A53. It was supposed to act as the high performance complement of the Cortex A53. Manufactures made octa-core chip-sets with four A53 core and four A57 cores to balance out the power saving and high performance equation. This kind of setup is called the big.LITTLE (written in small and capital letters in a paradoxical manner) configuration whereby the power saving cores are combined with high performance cores in the same processor; the cores are only activated when needed. For example, when typing a text message, the phone will only activate the power saving A53 cores, when playing a game, the A57 cores are woken up. Manufacturers can have this configuration in all manner of combinations; the most common is octa core with 4 power saving and 4 high performance cores like in the Samsung Galaxy S6. Other manufacturers have used 2+4 to make hexa core or even 2+4+4 to form a deca core. ARM has come up with a better high performance core to replace the A53, meet the A72.

ARM Cortex A72

This core has entirely replaced the A57. It offers 50% more performance than A57 at the same frequency. Unfortunately, only high end phones come with the A72 built in. This core has become the option of choice for manufacturers using big.LITTLE configuration. It also allows all manner of combinations. The bulk of 2016 flagship phones came with this core and thanks to its high performance, 4k video recording and virtual reality were made possible.

ARM Cortex A73

p10j

This core is the latest offering from ARM with 30% more performance than the A72 it is meant to replace. Currently, only one chipset utilizes it, the Kirin 960 from Huawei’s subsidiary called Hisilicon. It allows up to 2.8GHZ frequency levels while at the same time saving 30% more power than its predecessor the A72. It is no surprise that the Kirin 960 found in the new Huawei Mate 9 and the Huawei P10 is the most powerful and benchmark topping chipset currently available in any phone. In 2017, we are going to see a  lot of high end chipsets come with this core. Samsung has already announced plans for using a customized version of it in its next flagship processor called the Exynos 8895.

Custom cores

apple-iphone-7-3 image-rectangle_900_x

It is good to note that ARM only gives blueprints detailing how manufacturers can build processors. Some companies use the blueprints as they are, without tinkering with them. On the other hand, companies such as Samsung and Qualcomm usually alter the blueprints to make custom cores. The Samsung Exynos chipsets recently started using custom cores called Mongoose, the first phone to utilize them is the Galaxy S7. Qualcomm’s latest custom cores are called Kryo, they are found in all 2016 flagship cores in the Snapdragon 800 series. Snapdragon processors are the most popular chipset in android smartphones. Apple’s custom cores are called Hurricane, they are being used in the latest iPhone 7. Altering cores has many benefits such as squeezing the most power out of the lowest count. For instance Apple only uses a dual core setup, yet it has one of the highest benchmark scores of any chipset. Qualcomm uses only four Kryo cores in total, and was the reigning benchmarks champ in 2016 android flagships. Samsung Exynos uses 4 Mongoose cores and 4 A53 cores to make a total of 8, it’s always among the leaders in the android world especially in the power saving sector when compared to Snapdragon chipsets. Mediatek uses 10 non-customized cores yet it was only midrange in terms of performance, thousands of points behind the likes of Samsung and Apple, however, this deca cores are affordable and prioritize on power saving over speed, they are found in the new Infinix Zero 4 Plus and the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus.

Conclusion

In conclusion, not all cores are created equal. It is wise to look for cores that will fulfill your smartphone lifestyle. Those that do a lot of social networking and little to no gaming can do with power saving cores (A35 and A53), however those that are power users who do lots of gaming and heavy apps need the A72, A73 core. Remember, more cores does not necessarily mean more power. The power factor lies in the type of cores used.

Branch app has one of the shortest and most straight forward registration methods. All you have to do is log in with your Facebook credentials, give your MPESA number and receive a confirmation code. After you key in the code you get via SMS, you are set.

Fero_Iris_20170307-145219  Fero_Iris_20170307-130015

The app does its magic behind the scenes to decide if you are eligible for a loan. If everything checks out, you get presented with a choice of loans that you qualify for. It starts from KES 200 and builds up with multiples of 500. The loan choices are presented in a beautiful interface of circular buttons which present loan amount and move in a carousel manner. Below each loan amount is the interest fee, duration of loan payment.

Fero_Iris_20170307-110812 Fero_Iris_20170307-112248

Selecting a loan and confirming it will take you a page that breaks down the installments; it gives you the exact amount you need to pay and even the due date of each payment. You can go further to see the fee details section which  displays the percentage interest rate, and the actual interest amount. The money is sent to your MPESA account after the loan is approved. The interest rate for Branch starts at 14.57% for 500 shillings and gets lower as you request for bigger loans.

The app offers a customer care section that answers your questions but not as fast as I would like, they sometimes take hours before responding. Branch also offers a referral bonus that is deducted from the total loan amount that you have to pay.

Tala app review

Tala, just like Branch, requires you to give your MPESA number in order to get a confirmation code. The similarities between the two apps’ sign up end there. Tala asks you to enter a security PIN which is a great feature considering that this is a financial app.

Fero_Iris_20170307-114044  Fero_Iris_20170307-115109Fero_Iris_20170307-115422

Once you finish singing up, you will be taken to the home section of the app, here you find four options presented in a card like interface. The options include “Apply for a loan”, “My savings”, “My Tala status” and “Success stories” section. Clicking on the “Apply a loan” section brings a lengthy questionnaire asking all manner of things from your job details to the possession of the phone you are using.

I like the simpler approach of the Branch app a lot more.

Fero_Iris_20170307-115943Fero_Iris_20170307-115927

After being approved for a loan, you will be presented with your maximum limit and will be given a choice to take an amount below that limit. The choices are very few, only two, I wish there were more. After you pick your amount, you will be given the option of choosing your preferred payment schedule. You can pay in single, one month installment or you can have weekly installments. What I dislike about the schedules is that the weekly installments amount to only 3 weeks instead of a complete month (4 weeks). Also, the interest rates of paying the whole loan in one installment are higher than choosing to pay weekly. Tala does not charge a lower interest rate if you take a big loan. The rates are fixed at 11% if you pay weekly and 15% if you pay monthly. It seems Tala wants users to opt for weekly payments.

Fero_Iris_20170307-114112

“My Tala status” section tracks the loan categories you qualify for. A user starts at bronze status which ranges from 500 to 4,999, a silver status spans from 5,000 to 9,999, and finally a gold status that lets you borrow from 10,000 to 50,000.

Fero_Iris_20170307-114202

Tala has a savings feature which enables you to deposit cash and set goals. Unfortunately, the feature has not being launched yet. On a positive note, Tala has a referral section that lets you earn KES 100 off your next loan payment whenever you invite your friend. Tala’s customer care is not as informative as that of Branch. Even more, the option of talking with the support team is not obvious at first impression; you have to search it in between the answers of the FAQ sections.

Mshwari review

Mshwari is built into the MPESA menu, unlike Branch and Tala, it has no dedicated native app, but do not let this fool you into thinking it is lacking feature-wise. To access Mshwari, you just click the loans and savings option on the MPESA menu.

Fero_Iris_20170307-120237 Fero_Iris_20170307-120245

Mshwari lets you save money by simply transferring it from your MPESA account for free. You can have saving goals through the “Lock savings account option on the Mshwari menu”. This section lets you save for a given period of time ranging from one to six months. The saved money earns you interest of 7.35% paid every three months. These are features that neither Branch nor Tala offers.

When it comes to loans, Mshwari lets you borrow after you have been an MPESA subscriber for at least 6 months, have saved in Mshwari and use Safaricom services actively. Loans have no interest fee; they instead have a facility fee of 7.5%. Payment period is set at one month only, regardless of the loaned amount.

Video Moja Free Movie Streaming App Review

0

Now that Kenya has 4G internet in some parts, a lot of possibilities have been opened, the market is now ripe for video streaming services.

Video Moja is a new entrant in that streaming space with a promise of enabling Kenyans to access thousands of movie titles for free.

Interface and functionality

Fero_Iris_20170306-145340

After singing up with your Google Plus or Facebook credentials, you will be presented with a simple interface. The home tab has four sections namely, latest, trending, recommended, and favorite. The sections and the user interface are self-explanatory and one gets their way around pretty fast. The recommendations section is random at first but it gets better as the app learns from your preferences. The favorite section hosts the movies that you liked by tapping the love icon.

Fero_Iris_20170306-145350

Clicking on a movie at any section brings you to an information page. The page gives a brief description of the movie, the cast and a star rating.  From the same page, you can share a movie with your friends via social media and you can also have a film moved to your watch list by clicking the “watch later” icon. Further down the page, there are a number of movies recommended; they are of a similar genre with the film in context.

Fero_Iris_20170306-150235

Speaking of genres, there is a dedicated genres tab. The genres include Action, comedy, drama, romance, religious, and horror. In case you can’t find your movie, you can type its name in the search bar. The app conveniently starts displaying the search results as you are typing so you don’t have to finish the whole name.

There is a watch list tab that holds all the movies that you decided to “watch later”. If you change your mind on watching the movie, you can simply delete it from the watch-list with ease.

Fero_Iris_20170306-154618

Lastly, you have a profile tab. This tab holds a compilation of all your watched movies in case you want to re-watch any of them. Under this tab, you can edit your profile and also make some setting preferences.

Impressions

While using Video Moja, there are some things I realized like the way every tab is reloaded a-fresh every time you revisit it, perhaps this helps maintain smooth performance by not overloading the RAM however, reloading the thumbnails every time might not be easy on your data bundles.

The movies in this app are sourced from Youtube, on one side, the move helps keep the content free, on the other side, the developers need to come up with new features to make people choose Video Moja over Youtube; all the current offerings on the app are already available on Youtube such as “liking a video” and “choosing watching a video later”.

Speaking of watching a movie later, the “share movie” button is so small and closely placed to the “watch later” button, such that it is hard to click one without accidentally touching the other

The selection of movies at the moment is mostly Nigerian. Well, given that the app has a Swahili name, I expected more East African content, hopefully some will come soon.

On a positive note, the list under the tabs kept changing with new content, this helps in discovering new movies. Moreover, for a video heavy app, Video Moja is fluid while navigating but to get the best experience, you will need a 4G connection and maybe 2GB RAM, and above, on your device. The star rating pop-up at the end of every movie is a great feature to collect ratings which are useful to other people who haven’t watched that particular film.

Pros

Free content

A large selection of movies

Quick app discovery from search bar and auto-refreshing sections

Fluid operation

Simple and straight forward interface

Cons

No Kenyan and International content, only Nollywood movies.

App heavily consumes data.

The New Huawei P10 is just a replica of the previous P9

0

At MWC Huawei unveiled their new flagship device, the Huawei P10 and the bigger P10 Plus.

Though the two phones share common specs, the P10 plus comes with a bigger 5.5 inch QHD display and a bigger 3,750mAH battery. What worries me is that the two phones are like a re-branded Huawei P9 from late last year.

Huawei Mate 9 unveiled late 2016
Huawei Mate 9 unveiled late 2016

Well, in Huawei’s defense, the P10 is advancement over the P9, but not in many areas, I guess the best way to describe the P10 over the P9 is an “incremental update”.

Everything about the two phones is the same apart from the location of the network antennas, the camera and the slight chipset upgrade. Can you spot the difference from the two phones below?

Huawei P9 Grey Back
Huawei P9 Grey Back
hw_484527
Huawei P10 Grey Back

The P10 comes with a 5.1 inch IPS NEO display, which is 0.1 mm smaller than the P9 has. The same Full HD resolution stays.  IPS NEO is different from standard IPS screens in that this tech makes the colours richer than the limits of an IPS; blacks are deep like in OLED displays. In other words, the phone gets AMOLED colours without utilizing the expensive OLED panels. Speaking of color, the P10 comes in an array of them.

image001

Powering the device is the Kirin 960, the same one that was on the Mate 9 last year, accompanied by 4 GB RAM and a 32 GB expandable storage.

The camera rear is a dual 20MP + 12MP Leica optics system. The 20MP is a monochrome sensor that doesn’t have the colour pigments, this kind of setup works together with the 12MP to produce better low light pictures than other Dual camera systems. The P10 camera shares the same aperture size as the P9 from last year. The new changes comes in the 8MP selfie camera, same resolution with the P9, but is now co-engineered with Leica with goodies such as automatic wide angle shots when the phone realizes that more subjects have joined in on the photo. It also comes with a wider aperture to bring in more light in the selfies.

The USB- Type C port returns, with fast charge on board too, the only difference is that the battery has been slightly bumped from 3,000mAH to 3,200mAH. The 3.5 mm headphone jack is still intact.

With 2017 smartphones coming with 4K display resolution, HDR screens, water and dust resistance bodies, quad DAC for next level audio and much more, the Huawei P10 seems like a lazy effort from Huawei. Maybe it has started to get comfortable after achieving the title of “the number 3 top smartphone manufacturer in the world.

The many similarities with the previous Huawei P9, with marginal advancements only in the chipset and camera, make me recommend that one year old phone over this new one. The Huawei P9 from 2016 has now become much cheaper and yet offers almost 80% of the features the new Huawei P10 has.

The Huawei P10 will go on sale towards the end of March at the cost of KES 70,500 (€650). In contrast, the Huawei P9 from last year goes for KES 46,550 at Jumia, and it is even cheaper at Avechi, KES 42,000, that is over 40% savings for over 80% of the tech.

Sony bets high on cameras, introduces Xperia XZs, XA1 and XA1 Ultra

0

Sony was on a roll at MWC at Barcelona, it released not one but 4 different phones. Each one of these phones are targeted to a different target market. Apart from the Sony Xperia XZ Premium that we already reported on, the company launched the Sony Xperia XZs, Sony Xperia XA1, and finally the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra.

Sony Xperia XZs

xzs

The XZs comes with a 5.2 inch full HD display of the Triluminous variety. The phone is wrapped in a glass back and front while a metallic frame runs in between to form a water and dust resistant body. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 820 from last year’s flagship phones, it is backed with 4GB RAM and a choice between 32GB and 64GB internal storage; the space can be expanded via a micro SD card up to 256GB. Photography is catered for by a 19MP Motion Eye rear camera that supports 960fps super slo-mo mode and a 13MP front facing camera. 960fps is a world’s first super slo-mo on a  mobile phone, others don’t go past 240fps. USB type C is on board as well as a 3.5 mm head phone jack and a stereo speaker setup. The whole system runs on android 6.0 Nougat and is powered by a 2,900mAH battery. Lastly, a fingerprint sensor conveniently placed on the side mounted power button handles the device security.

Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra

sony-xpera-xa-1-ultra-8

This phone comes with a whopping 6 inch screen with full HD resolution and almost no bezels at all, its quite breath-taking. A Mediatek Helio P20 runs the show revealing the midrange nature of the phone. 4 GB RAM will ensure smooth multitasking and a choice of 32GB or 64GB internal space is available, both with expansion slots of up to 256GB. The Ultra XA1 is a targeted to shutterbugs who love taking photos, it is equipped with 23MP rear camera and a mega 16MP selfie camera with an LED flash. The music sector is covered by a 3.5 mm jack which many manufacturers, such as Apple, are abandoning. Android 7.0 is on-board and is kept on by a meagre 2,700 mAH battery; fortunately it supports Pump Express 2.0+ fast charge through the USB-Type C.

Sony Xperia XA1

sony-xperia-xzs-hero-2017-02-27-02

This is the low end of them all and obviously the most affordable. It keeps the price low by going with a 5 inch HD display, 3 GB of RAM, a 32GB storage, 8MP selfie camera with no LED flash and a 2300 mAH battery. Sony decided to bring some features from the XA1 Ultra such as the 23MP camera, the USB-Type C with Pump Express 2.0+ fast charge, the same Mediatek Helio P20 chipset and the Android 7.0 Nougat version. Both the XA1 and the XA1 Ultra have no water resistance nor dust protection.

Fero Iris Review: An affordable phone with a Samsung Galaxy Note 7-like eye scanner

0

Fero Iris has been making the headlines lately with their iris scanner in an affordable package. The company was generous enough to let us have one Iris in order to bring you a comprehensive review.

I have been using the phone as my main device for several days and I made some notes on it including an unboxing article.

The Fero Iris is an affordable phone going for KES 8,999 exclusively at Jumia, does it deliver a worthwhile experience, or did the company cut on quality to arrive at such a low cost? Find out in the following full and exclusive review.

Design

IMAG0010j

The Fero Iris is a beautiful phone; the front is all glass with capacitive touch buttons at the bottom. Surrounding the glass is a chrome –like ring that subtly reflects light to make the phone have a premium look.

The top part is quite busy, it houses the selfie camera, the Iris scanner, the light sensor, proximity sensor and the earpiece. The back looks like metal at first impression, but after you hold the phone on your hand you will notice that it’s made of smartly crafted plastic.

Fero even went ahead to put faux metal antennas and even hairline textures to emulate brushed aluminum. The back hosts a camera and one LED flash and below it at the bottom is the loud speaker grill. The rear cover is removable to reveal a battery, two micro sized sim card slots and a memory card slot. The battery is removable so it eases replacements.

Display

IMAG0004jj
The display, according to me, is the most appealing feature of the Fero Iris. It’s a 5.18 inch display with a HD resolution. It the best I have seen on an affordable phone.

The colors are rich and deep, they almost look like AMOLED renders,  however, the screen is of IPS variet , the higher quality ones, I must say. Blacks are pitch black and whites are bright.  Sunlight legibility is top notch too, the Iris screen can be super bright to see even under direct sunlight.

However, when it comes to pitch dark environments, the brightness of the display does not go low enough to let you read the screen comfortably.

The Iris scanner

Fero_Iris_20170301-184859j

IMAG0001jj

The headline feature for this phone is the Iris scanner, it’s the tech that gives the phone its name. Fero did a great implementation of it, the scanner works reliably and can be used as one’s primary method of unlocking the device. It works even in pitch darkness which is quite amazing.

During the launch, the Fero executives praised the tech saying that even identical twins cannot crack each other’s security. If someone makes you touch your phone’s fingerprint sensor while you are sleeping, they will have full access to your device, the same exploit cannot be done with an iris scanner, so that’s a plus for the Fero Iris.

Camera

Fero_Iris_20170304-115435

The Fero Iris has an 8 MP back camera that produces great pictures in daylight. When there is sufficient light, you will get saturated pictures with good amount of detail.

The dynamic range of the phone is really good too, the sky will not get overexposed. You can have your subject photographed against the bright sun and still end up with blue skies at the background.

Fero_Iris_20170301_111206jjp

The trick in the Iris camera is waiting for the focus to lock in. Sure the focus is fast but, in some scenarios it takes a moment before it locks on your desired subject. Images in-focus and under good lighting come out great.

jjj

In low light scenarios, photos do not share the same appeal,  they appear noisy and make the subjects look grainy. Activating HDR helps a bit though, but in overall do not expect wonders in this scenario.

The selfie camera is terrible, the two megapixels produces soft looking images with no detail at all. Even under direct sunlight, they still under-deliver.

The video recording is capped at 720p HD on the 8MP rear camera. Fero does not explicitly tell you what resolution you are recording at, the settings are simply categorized them as low, medium, high, and fine.

The HD option is the “fine” setting. The videos require you to continuously tap on the subject to have it on focus, otherwise you will end up with blurry looking footage.

The quality of the footage is acceptable especially under bright light. The selfie camera can record 480p footage but I wouldn’t recommend it.

A nice touch with the Iris camera app is that it bumps up the brightness to max when you launch the camera. It lets you see the viewfinder in its full glory; this way, you can judge the quality of your photo before you take it.

Performance

Fero_Iris_20170304-122339

The quick start up guide paperwork in the box states that the Iris packs a Mediatek 6737, but upon close inspection with CPU-Z app, we discovered that it is the Mediatek 6735 running the show. Well, I guess there are different chipsets being packaged for different markets. The difference between the two chipsets is very minor so you won’t be left wishing you had the other.

The Mediatek 6735 inside the Iris is coupled with only 1GB of RAM and has an antutu benchmark of 31,111.

In real life performance, the Iris is smooth and consistent. If you try multitasking heavily, the phone will stutter. I noticed the stutter when transitioning from Google Play music to Google Keep. If you stick to one app at a time then the performance becomes lag free.

Gaming is okay in light titles. Heavy games such as Asphalt and Sim City will also play but in low graphics settings. Multitasking while playing a game, however, is not recommended due to the low RAM.

Software

Fero_Iris_20170304-115359

In terms of software, the phone ships with android 6.0 and a mainly stock interface which has a light custom launcher. Fero only changed the stock home screen launcher and left the other bit of android 6.0 untouched. This maintains the overall smooth operation of the phone.

My only wish is that they could have left the stock launcher intact since their custom one does not have an app drawer; this means that all apps are on the home screen and it can get messy and unorganized at times.

Fero_Iris_20170304-115408

A nice touch with the custom launcher is that the wallpaper keeps changing automatically every few moments. The wallpaper seems to have been selected specifically to show off the brilliance of the display.

Apps installed are mainly stock with no bloat-ware apart from the sweet selfie app for taking selfies with an array of filters, and WPS app that is an editor and viewer of all Microsoft office documents and PDFs too.

Telephony and Multi-media

Despite all the advancements of the tech industry, a phone’s primary role still remains to be communication, that is, calls and messaging. The Fero Iris has a loud ear piece that makes it easy to listen to the other person talk without straining. The quality of the audio is decent, not very crisp, but good overall.

Messaging happens via the stock text app, the keyboard got me a couple of days before getting the hang of it. Google Keyboard app comes preinstalled, it’s a great keyboard but the size of the screen makes the layout require a slight learning curve but once you get used to it, texting becomes a breeze.

In terms of multimedia, the earphone jack produces super loud music; I really loved the output. I would go as far as recommending the phone to audiophiles on a budget. The quality easily beats the Tecno Boom J7 which was marketed as a music-oriented gadget.

The only issue is that you will need to invest in a decent pair of earphones, the one that come in the box are not as good and their wires seem very weak, they can snap at any moment.

The loud speaker is also great, it is quite loud and doesn’t distort even at the highest volume. Fero even made small bumps around the rear facing speaker grill to make sure the audio doesn’t get muffled when you place the phone on a flat surface.

Battery

The phone comes with a 2500mAH battery; it has a decent battery life that can take you through a whole day of use, provided you use the phone sparingly. The Mediatek chipset, the optimization of android 6.0 and the HD screen make it possible to achieve decent battery life. Charging however is excruciatingly slow. It takes over three hours to charge from 0-100% using the charger that comes in the box.

Conclusion

The Fero Iris is a great device for the price, it has a display with rich colors, takes beautiful pictures under bright day light, has a reliable iris scanner, decent battery life and a quick affordable price tag. At KES 8,999, the Fero Iris is an obvious recommendation.

LG G6 Unveiled: The best LG phone yet

0

Last week we made a post that was summarizing all the leaks and rumors surrounding the LG G6. As predicted, LG went ahead and released the phone last weekend. Most of the rumors turned out to be true but there were some new surprises as well.

gsmarena_011-1

The LG G6 comes with a breath-taking screen which has the smallest bezels of any LG phone so far. The screen covers over 80% of the display and has a Quad HD+ resolution (2880 *1440) under a new 18:9 aspect ratio. This ratio means that the phone’s display height is twice the size of its width. Additionally, the display can be divided into two perfect squares. LG has customized the software to take advantage of these squares such as camera modes where the top square acts as a view finder and the bottom one becomes a preview of the most recently taken photo. Still on the screen, the phone comes with Dolby Vision HDR. This technology promises to widen the color representation of the phone to produce deeper colors and richer contrast. Since this is a HDR display tuned by Dolby, it will have a lower battery consumption of up to 15 % compared to other HDR implementations.

lg-g6-57

Speaking of specially tuned features, LG packs not one but four audio DACs. They are tuned by Bang and Olfusen, a premium audio company that LG has worked with before on the LG V20 which turned out to have one of the best audio production of any phone ever made. The Quad DAC gauge your earphones capability and they decide how many DACs should be activated, well you still have the option of activating them all manually if you want. The audio setup can power everything from simple, affordable earphones to premium, high end headphones which demand more power. Unfortunately, this Quad DAC feature will not be available in all markets, the US is not getting it but we hope Africa does. Nonetheless, LG promises top notch audio in all its variations.

The body of the LG G6 is graced with an aluminum rear casing and a glass front. The corners are rounded to help disperse shock from drop impacts effectively protecting your device from glass shutters. The back hosts two cameras and a fingerprint sensor that doubles as the power button. The body is water and dust resistant, a first for LG flagships.

gsmarena_029

The cameras are both 13MP but one has a normal angle of 71 degrees of view while the other has 125 degrees wide angle.  The  cameras work together to enable a lossless zoom similar to the Apple iPhone 7 plus, however in LG’s implementation, there is no transition stutter as seen on the iPhone.  Wide angle photos can be taken by the second camera so you no longer have to keep moving backwards to picture the full width of your subject. The camera square mode comes in handy for shooting Instagram sized photos and the food mode lets you adjust white balance with a slider to ensure you get the colors perfectly. The front has a 5MP with 100 degrees wide angle camera to ensure all your buddies fit in the selfie. Most other phones max out at 88 degrees.

All these features are built into the latest android 7.0, Nougat but under a deeply customized LG skin. The G6 is the first phone outside the Google Pixels to come with the intelligent Google Assistant out of the box. Powering the device is a Snapdragon 821 with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage expandable up to a mind boggling 2TB. The chipset may not be the latest Snapdragon 835, but the phone still flies through all its tasks with buttery smooth performance.

The battery department is catered for by a 3,300 mAH battery that has Quick Charge 3.0 support. The battery is not removable unlike other LG flagships but at least the phone supports wireless charging. Wired charging is done through a USB- Type C port.

LG G6 to me is the best phone of 2017 so far, sure the Sony Xperia XZ premium has 4K HDR display, water resistance and slo- motion videos, but LG offers features that I think are more essential to users and will ultimately impact on their lives better than Sony would. LG is also known to be a value-oriented company in that its phones are a bit cheaper than its competitors. The price has been predicted to range between KES 50,000 to 70,000, however, Cho Juno president of LG mobile division has confirmed that Korea will be the first market to get the phone on March, 10 and it will carry a price tag of 899,800 Won (Around KES  79,600). Sure that price is a bit steep, but it is lower than what its main competitors the Apple iPhone 8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 will carry.
