Don’t Underestimate the Value of Mentorship

0

Martina Laurie(1)Mentorship shouldn’t be underestimated.

The value of having access to someone to discuss issues with, to lean on for moral support or for well-timed advice based on their proven track record (particularly in business) cannot be overemphasised. Experts in the wellness industry believe that the role that this person plays in helping to shape existing and future entrepreneurs is without doubt one of the most significant in the market today.

Laurie made a decision some years ago to move from the world of chartered accountancy and auditing to successfully break into the wellness industry and establish a sustainable massage venture. Aside from a healthy dose of courage, to do this Laurie relied extensively on support and help from Ian Haggie, a business partner and one of her first clients of a previous auditing business.

Haggie became her coach and mentor, transferring knowledge and critical skills sets including structuring asset bases, business ethics and application.

“It was from Ian Haggie that I learned the benefit you gain from having a mentor. This person does not receive payment, it is usually someone who is retired, who is in a different time of his or her life, who is in a position to transfer skills to someone younger.  The big thing is to look at someone in your family or friends or client base and just ask them for “help”. You can have different mentors in business, self-development, assist you in your health but it is the big step, is to ask for someone to be your mentor you can find a lot of mentors in the church,” Laurie adds.

However, she continues to say that being a mentor is “a massive responsibility” and one has to be available and offer guidance where necessary.

“It takes a lot of patience and a genuine desire to help and empower people,” Laurie adds. “The return is a satisfaction that you have impacted positively on the life of someone who needed help. From a wellness and personal development point of view, this is most definitely a win-win scenario. From a business point of view, this type of direct and consistent support can only lead to bigger and better things … a definite way to open doors.”

The very first African Think Tank Studies are set to take place in Pretoria on the 3-5 Feburary which is brought to us cutesy of The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the University of Pennsylvania.

The Summit will be held under the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tank and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP), with the aim to provide a regional forum to engage and discuss challenging policy and organizational issues facing think tanks in Africa.

The summit’s main focus will be the policy level and institutional issues; they will tackle the national and regional policies, programs and strategies that address the current and emerging security threats for the continent and opportunities for Africa to become a major global trade and investment partner.  On the institutional issues, the summit will deal with the long-term sustainability of think tanks and the sharing of best practices for research and resource mobilization.

ACBF has vast experience in the establishment of think tanks in Africa, currently supporting 29 policy think tanks in 22 countries.  Central to this support has been the conviction that policy analysis and research are critical to economic management, thereby leading to improving public policy for growth, equity, employment and poverty reduction.

ACBF has achieved three main results, namely limited policy reversal on the continent, equipping governments with relevant skills for economic policy analysis and improving policy planning and monitoring for development frameworks such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It is hoped that the First African Think Tank Summit will establish learning alliances between African and global think tanks including the development of a ranking baseline which ACBF supported Think tanks can utilize to improve performance and maximize impact.

Master the Mainframe is here with us, thanks to IBM students have yet another chance to prove their capability. The company has unveiled the competition in Kenya to allow the Kenyan students to showcase their talent and explore future employment possibilities.

Through the contest, students learn everything from how to log onto mainframe environments to developing code and problem solving.

The master mainframe competition has no limitations as it is open to students from all Kenyan universities, has already attracted entries from students at local universities.

As a three-part contest which is taking place in a number of countries, Master the Mainframe serves as an introduction to programming and application development and students require no initial mainframe experience to participate.

“Mainframes have always been at the center of the global economy as well as the backbone of most cities infrastructures. Today, mainframes are growing in popularity as technology evolves, demanding more open, scalable and secure solutions and platforms for cloud, mobile and big data analytics,” said Felix Orondo, Team Leader for the Master the Mainframe initiative in Kenya.

The fact that 90 percent of the world’s data has been developed over the past few years will mean that advanced systems such as the mainframe continue to be critical tools of success for businesses, especially for those in growth markets such as Kenya.

Contestants in the Master the Mainframe competition will gain hands-on experience with a wide array of mainframe technologies, including REXX, Java and Linux on System among many others.

Students will be evaluated in each part of the competition and a reward will be given to any that proceeds to the next round which involves more challenges. The goal of the contest is to provide students with the mainframe skills necessary to find those unique and exciting jobs.

In 2013, IBM trained over 59,000 students worldwide on the mainframe.

Students who enter the competition also have the opportunity to identify job opportunities supporting mainframe environments. To help in this process, IBM has created Systemzjobs.com.

The job board is a resource to link IBM System z clients and partners with students and professionals seeking System z job opportunities and regularly features over 1,000 mainframe-related jobs.

The contest is open to students who are currently taking at least 3 school credits.

Students and teachers can register for the IBM Master the Mainframe Contest by clicking on ibm.com/university/contest

Safaricom Says Customer Data is Safe

0

bl19_cblnr_mobile_s_845096fIn a statement to the public, Kenya’s leading mobile operator has said no customer data has leaked as purported by a cross-section of Kenyans over the Deposit Protection Fund Board SMS texts, and the messages weren’t a hoax by fraudsters.

Safaricom said the SMS broadcast to subscribers from the Deposit Protection Fund Board, a body under the Central Bank of Kenya was sent by them as authorized by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK). Safaricom said the  authorized SMS Broadcast were sent to its entire subscriber base on behalf of DPFB which holds depositors’ funds with Kenya’s Daima Bank, Trust Bank and Fortune which are since defunct.

“DPFB sought to reach out to the depositors through an SMS broadcast as they do not have mobile records of these depositors so that they can access their funds,” said the firm in a statement. “The SMS Broadcast originates from Safaricom and therefore no customer data has been shared with any external party.”

DPFB reached out to depositors and creditors in good faith, as they only have one month to claim their money back, the refunds began last year February 25 and were said to only take one year for Daima Bank while those for Trust Bank and Fortune Finance will close  December this year.
The three firms are among the 17 that under liquidation and DPFB has been running adverts in print appealing for all those depositors who have never appeared for payments to come forward. Data from the board puts the number of institutions that are currently under liquidation at 17. The law demands that the Fund pays depositors Ksh 100,000 immediately an institution is put under liquidation. Bulk depositors over Ksh 100,000 are guaranteed the Ksh100,000 and dividends based on the sale of the institution.
The public outcry about a possible hack into Safaricom’s customer database are not just out of paranoia. US top retailer Target was recently hacked, leading to damage of over 110 million accounts leading to mounting pressure on U.S banks and merchants to secure credit- and debit-card data, and even forced to reissue cards.
Below is Safaricom’s full statement.

SAFARICOM ISSUES CLARIFICATION ON DPFB SMS BROADCAST

Nairobi 14th Jan 2014…Safaricom would like to issue a clarification with regards to the SMS broadcast to our subscribers from the Deposit Protection Fund Board, a body under the Central Bank of Kenya

  • The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) in the public’s interest authorized Safaricom to send an SMS Broadcast to its entire subscriber base on behalf of DPFB.
  • The Deposit Protection Fund Board (DPFB) is holding depositors’ funds previously with three defunct financial institutions; Daima Bank, Trust Bank and Fortune.
  • DPFB sought to reach out to the depositors through an SMS broadcast as they do not have mobile records of these depositors so that they can access their funds.
  • The SMS Broadcast originates from Safaricom and therefore no customer data has been shared with any external party.

Generations actors go on strike

0

generations

So once again the stars of South Africa’s most beloved soap opera have downed scripts and are striking again . This comes less than a month after the acting CEO of SABC stepped in to end the last strike. While I have no problem with them exercising their democratic right to protest less than ideal working conditions I do have a few questions I need answered.

Firstly are Generations cast members allowed to strike? I know there are certain laws that prevent people who walk in essential services from striking and surely the cast members of such a revered show should be included. I think it would be a catastrophe if the golden half an hour from 8 to 8.30pm was occupied by anything else other than the award winning and endlessly thrilling drama that is Generations.

In the latest strike some actors revealed that they were afraid Mfundi Vundla would have the option of killing off their characters with no notice as and when he saw fit. Kiss me if I’m wrong but is this really something to lose sleep over? Soap characters die all the time. Then reappear as their own evil twins a few weeks later. Or pop up as themselves but with amnesia.

The last question I have comes from the following quote attributed to one of the actors:

“Our relationship with Generations has been like that of a woman who is stuck in an abusive relationship. Now we say ‘enough is enough’ – we must speak out against this abuse.”

I am not even sure where to start. Did they just compare themselves to RiRi with Mfundi being Chris Brown? If we are going to extrapolate this does this mean The Wild is the one that got away? Is Muvhango the plan B ? Do they secretly hope to be hired by Isidingo? The people want to know.

American Idol returns with changes

0

“American Idol” will be singing a different (and newer) tune when it returns this week.

Producers said Monday that the show’s new season will include changes to freshen it, including expanded song choices for contestants.

After tending toward a fair amount of golden oldies, the show’s song list will add more current tunes that the young contestants can relate to, executive producer Per Blankens said.

Former judge Randy Jackson’s new role will include leading a workshop that helps contestants deal with vocal and other challenges, executive producer Trish Kinane said.

Judges, from left, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr. are seen during the panel of "American Idol" at the FOX Winter 2014 TCA, on Jan. 13, 2014, at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.
Judges, from left, Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr.

There will be a new element called “The Chamber,” where contestants go after host Ryan Seacrest tells them they’re about to perform for the judges during auditions. “It’s a very intimate moment,” Kinane said.

The talent contest also will introduce a “rush week” that precedes the Hollywood week auditions.

But Kinane told the Television Critics Association that the series is still essentially “American Idol.”

Fox’s program enters its 13th season with declining ratings and competition in the talent genre from NBC’s “The Voice.”

It’s the first season for the judging panel of Keith Urban, Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez, who told the critics’ group they have fun working together and want to emphasize the contestants, not themselves.

Urban ducked a question about his experience last season working with judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, who became known for their on-air sniping. Seacrest helped, joining Urban in pretending the question was about their relationship.

“Ryan and I worked it out,” Urban said.

“We’re fine,” Seacrest added.

“Idol” returns with a two-night season premiere Wednesday and Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Africa’s music streaming and audio marketplace Waabeh has hit one year after launch, recording tremendous milestones in the now hotly contested Africa streaming market.

The music streaming service revealed to TechMoran that it had passed over 10, 000 downloads and was serving over 330,000 streams by January 14 2014.

“About a year ago we launched Waabeh, guided by a radical idea that African musicians could  finally control their destiny, reap from their labor of love all the while giving their fans a place  where they could listen  to and download  their favorite music, said Tim Rimbui, Waabeh co-founder and CEO.

“Our promise was a solution that empowered the artists with  simple upload and distribution over the internet and mobile apps, gave them a higher sales royalty as compared to the telcos that were keeping up to 85% [Waabeh keeps 30%]  in addition to  giving their fans  easy and  familiar  payment options such as mobile money [MPesa,] and credit cards,” Rimbui added.

Waabeh has expanded beyond it’s initial base of Nairobi,  Kenya  and is now serving musicians and their fans from all across the world in such varied places like The Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and even Japan. Rimbui says 2013 was a tough yet fruitful year and Waabeh is glad to be part of the larger African tech community offering working solutions to uniquely local problems.

According to Mr. Jonah Adams, Managing Director, Smartgov.CRSG Limited, “We are extremely proud of our achievements to date in Cross River State and the renewed commitment from CRSG to extend the use of the Smartgov identity management and e-payment infrastructure to eliminate wastage and grow revenues. It is our mission to help state governments to offer their citizens a more efficient service and better value for money.”

The Smartgov project has enabled CRSG to create a state-wide Identity Management System for residents and corporate in the state (the first state in Sub-Saharan Africa) while biometric-based Identity Cards have also been issued, providing cardholders with access to healthcare, pension, transportation, educational bursaries, social amenities and social benefits. Smartgov has facilitated the automation of key Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) revenue sources and services and the reduction of government processing cost.

Mr. Mitchell Elegbe, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Interswitch Transnational, said the success of Smartgov in Cross River State has given them a greater determination to roll out the solution across all state governments in Nigeria.

recharge card

MTN Nigeria has no choice but defend itself over claims that the company was selling their recharge cards at a price above their actual value in some parts of Nigeria. The company has said that the values of the recharge cards are still the same.

The Corporate Service Executive, Wale Goodluck had this to say: “We have not effected a price increase and the retail prices of the various denominations of our recharge cards and recharge vouchers remain the same.”

Currently the recharge voucher are sold in values of N1,500, N750, N400, N200 and N100.

“Any such hike is contrary to MTN’s wishes or knowledge. MTN has a well-established distribution structure and all our authorized partners within this structure are obliged to sell recharge cards at their face value. Any variance from the authorized face value of recharge cards is without MTN’s knowledge or authority,” added Goodluck.

The telecommunication company said that the subscribers have the option of buying airtime vouchers through recharge cards or recharge vouchers or through a virtual top up.

MTN further explained that the airtime recharge options were distributed through an extensive trade and distribution network, which has over the years, successfully enhanced accessibility to airtime and customer convenience.

Lupita Nyong’o’s next project in Liam Neeson’s “Non-stop” movie

0

Liam Neeson’s particular set of skills gets a workout in the trailer for “Non-Stop,” a Neeson-y new film about a U.S. Air Marshal (Neeson) framed for hijacking a transatlantic flight from New York to London. Is Neeson’s Bill Marks responsible for systematically killing the flight’s passengers every 20 minutes? Probably not — eyes on you, famous co-star Julianne Moore — but all hail whoever had the idea of Neeson catching and firing a gun in mid-air on an airplane.

non-stop lupita

Shouts, too, to Corey Stoll and “12 Years A Slave’s” Lupita Nyong’o, who co-star. But there’s something a little too familiar about the trailer for his new film “Non-Stop,” which hit theaters in February. We took a close look at the new preview and found five major action movie clichés all combined into one trailer.

Plane Setting
When it is set on a plane, there’s nowhere to go, which is just another way of saying that it’s a confined thriller, but the size of the box we’re trapped in can vary. An airplane is far from new fare for a confided thriller. We’ve seen the device used in the air in “Red Eye,” “Flightplan,” and, of course, “Snakes on a Plane.”

Bad Guy In Hiding
Neeson is just doing his job during the flight when he gets a text message. Now, before you start following his example and texting during your next flight, stop. He’s using a secure, Marshals-only channel. The bad guy or bad girl is somewhere on the flight with him. It could literally be anybody, but it’s probably the second or third most famous person on the cast. We’re looking at you, Julianne Moore.

Hostages Held At Ransom
How do you instantly crank up the suspense of a thriller? Take a bunch of people hostage. In “Non-Stop,” the texting buddy is holding the entire flight for ransom until he/Julianne Moore gets money wired to an off-shore account. “But how will the bad guy ever persuade the authorities to play along?” you ask. “That would take another thriller trot.”

Ticking Clock
That’s absolutely correct! When taking a group of people hostage isn’t enough, the bad buy has to threaten to kill people one-by-one in timed increments. “Non-Stop” gives Neeson 20 minutes between executions, and that would be bad enough if that was the only thing going on here.

He’s Being Set Up
“Something else is going on,” Neeson says in the trailer. And he’s right. That’s because the off-shore account the ransom money is supposed to be funneled to is in his name. That’s pretty suspicious, huh? You’d think that the government would start to assume he was behind it all based on that information, so the conflict of “Non-Stop” then becomes his struggle to clear his name.

“Non-Stop” is out in theaters on Feb. 28, 2014.

CCK HINT AT TEEN’S SIM REGISTRATION COMMENCEMENT.

0

The Communications Commission of Kenya yesterday hinted at the starting of Sim card registration among teenagers who will undergo the process using their parent’s identification card.

The move by the commission targets at weeding out mobile fraud among Kenyans and for the government to collect accurate data on subscribers as well. The teenagers who will have their Sim cards registered under their names will however have to be in the company of their parent/guardian who will  be rendered liable for all activities carried out using the sim cards.

At the press briefing, the Communications Commission also announced plans to institute a raft of reforms that are set to streamline the fast growing telecommunications sector.

The Commission of Kenya recently asked mobile operators to upgrade their service provision, which in an audit was termed inefficient having Safaricom lead with 50% -30% lower than the worldwide expectation.

This comes with heavy fines awaiting gazettement; Use of false information while registering will attract an amount of sh100,000 or jailed for six months contravening the new rules will lead to a fine not more than 5 million for mobile operators while agents will have to foot sh500,000 and 300,000 for persons against the regulations.

According to director general of the Communications Authority of Kenya Mr. Francis Wagusi, the penalties will instill responsibility from the mobile operator, agent and subscribers since they all stand to be accountable to an offense made.

Wrecking Ball and Work B***h banned in France

0

Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears’ raunchy music videos have been banned from daytime television in France.

The country’s broadcasting watchdog Conseil Superieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA) has ruled that channels can only show Miley’s ‘Wrecking Ball’ and Britney’s ‘Work Bitch’ videos after a 10pm watershed.

According to CSA, the ‘Wrecking Ball’ promo, which shows Miley swinging naked on a demolition ball and licking a sledge hammer is too sexually explicit.

The ‘Work Bitch’ video, which shows Britney in bondage dress portrays ”a sadomasochistic universe representing women in a way that risks shocking many viewers”.

The watchdog said that some French TV channels were showing the videos in the daytime without parental guidance warnings, according to Sky News.

At the end of last year, Miley debuted another controversial video for her track ‘Adore You’.

In the clip, the 21-year-old singer is seen writhing around in white bedsheets, and films herself licking and biting herself.

At one point the pop star runs her hands down her body before letting her fingers slide under the elastic band of her underwear as she bites her flesh and sucks her thumb whilst staring suggestively into the camera.

‘Wrecking Ball’ has now had more than 474 million views on YouTube, while ‘Work Bitch’ has amassed more than 70 million hits.

South African technology firm, Altech, is officially out of the Kenyan market marked with the sale of a stake in UK Company Liquid Telecom that it acquired last year in exchange for shareholding in Kenya Data Networks (KDN).

Altech sold a shareholding which they acquired in February last year at 8.6 percent stake that it owns in Liquid Telecom for $55 million.

“Altech has exercised its put option and has entered into an agreement with, inter alia, Econet Wireless Global Limited to dispose of its 8.6 percent equity interest in Liquid for a cash consideration of $55 million, giving a profit rise of  $15.1 million before tax,” said Altech in a statement.

The filings with Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) value Liquid Telecom’s business across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho and South Africa at $640 million.

Altech also intends to clear debts with the chunk of money they have profited from.

“The cash consideration from the disposal will be used to reduce the Altron group’s net debt position following the scheme of arrangement between Altron and Altech, completed on 19th August 2013,” added the statement.

Liquid operates fibre infrastructure in the southern and central Africa and is partly owned by Econet Wireless Global, the company founded by Zimbabwean telecoms tycoon Strive Masiyiwa.

Altech was initially operating through KDN which it co-owned with businessman Naushad Merali. The duo reduced their shareholding after they sold a combined 80 per cent stake to UK-based Liquid Telecom, a year ago, in a deal that resulted in KDN rebranding to Liquid Telecom.

Should the board approve the sale it will result in Econet Wireless tightening its grip on the telecoms business at it is the largest shareholder in Liquid Telecom. Altech said that once the board approves, Econet is expected to pay Altech the cash by February 28.

Nigerian Society of Engineers Campaign For e-Voting Next Elections

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) wants the next election, which is next year, to use the electronic voting processes; this they say will ensure credibility.

NSE has recommended that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) use the Nigerian Communication Satellite (NigComSat) e-Voting system; and is willing to offer technical support to INEC.

President of the Society, Eng. Mustapha Balarabe Shehu, said the country could save money by using an e-voting system.

“We have successfully used the NigComSat e-voting platform to elect our executive members twice and we believe that INEC could also use the platform in the coming election. Government is already tackling the issue of power and broadband penetration. Once that is settled, I believe the next thing is for INEC to key in into the e-voting platform. We have tested it twice and we believe that it is workable,” he said.

He explained how the society conducted its election using the NigComSat e-Voting platform.

“Prelude to the e-voting, an e-registration took place a day before where all eligible engineers had their data captured and saved on a database. Biometric details included photographs, fingerprints among others for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

“In all, 2,048 engineers were captured during the registration and 1,574 voted eventually. These figures surpassed those of previous year which recorded 1,313 on the register while 1,303 voted,” said Shehu.

He advised INEC to use the system on a small-scale for a pilot test and then eventually expand it to cover the entire country.
