Leo McKay, the former head of communications for Nokia in South Africa started his career at Nokia in 2008 at the company’s Espoo headquarters. He handled a number of assignments while working in Finland, the last of which being in Nokia’s global press team as the head of global media strategy. McKay worked with many of the world’s most influential media and played a leading role in large scale global events and product launches. McKay also worked on the company’s financial communications around quarterly and annual results, did a large amount of executive speech writing for senior company executives, and served as an official spokesperson.

Prior to joining Nokia, Leo was a Vice-President at one of South African’s leading public relations agencies, FleishmanHillard.  He will be replacing Delia Sieff who has been promoted to head communications for Nokia in the Middle East and Africa.

“Leo has a great deal of experience at Nokia, both in Africa and globally,” said Gerard Brandjes, vice-president for Nokia in South East Africa. “He is a trusted advisor, a respected leader among colleagues and I am delighted to see him in this role.”

Kenyan Teenager Inspires the Launch of SwapKitabu.com, a Marketplace for School Textbooks in Africa

0

1451417_594583050588744_1178744311_nSteve Nguru’s daughter wanted school textbooks, she presented him with a list of 5 supplementary study books she needed at the beginning of 2013 when she entered class 8. The 5 books cost Ksh 2,590/(about $30). Nguru didn’t have the money.

“I thought that was too expensive for the average parent,” he said. Nguru did not buy the textbooks immediately but before long the teenage daughter came home with some of them. When he asked her where she got them from, she said they were abandoned by the previous class 8 class pupils.

“This is when I learnt that this is a common habit amongst candidates, not to mention the so-called “academic fires” where they burn all their books after exams. Aware that millions of homes in Kenya live on less than a couple of dollars a day, it hit me that I can use the power of technology to ease the burden of textbooks on parents, because there are a lot of such unused textbooks lying in many homes as well,” he told TechMoran.

Then Swapkitabu.com, an online market place for school textbooks was born. The site provides a platform for parents to exchange textbooks and takes off the cost, time, and hassle of looking for textbooks. It is based on the Hand-me-down model of sharing among families in Africa. It also enables one to sell the textbooks their kids no longer use, and to use the money to buy the textbooks the kids need. In effect, the parent spends little or no money for books each year.

Nguru says his target users are parents with school-going children who will sign up for yearly subscriptions, where he hopes to make some money.

His idea is driven by the fact that a good education is not an option but a must for the rich or poor. He adds that stats show that the present average book:pupil ratio in Kenya’s primary schools is 1:4. It is worse in urban-poor and rural schools at 1:7 or worse, according to Uwezo, an education research organisation. This means there is a yearly shortfall of millions of textbooks in both the public and private schools, greatly compromising education – a basic right.

In five years Nguru says SwapKitabu will be the go-to for textbooks for primary, secondary, and college/university levels in Kenya and beyond; and a place for users to get bargain deals on used textbooks. He expects to be the leading authority on data on textbooks: textbook ratios by area, textbook deficiencies by area and to assist potential individual/organisational donors of textbooks, as well as policy/decision makers on education materials funding at the local level.

Though without any external funding, Nguru says they welcome any angel investors to help them market and extend their reach countrywide, and to develop a mobile platform for the same. He is not afraid of the digital move as books remain important in people’s lives and people still buy hard cover books on Amazon. The startup is incubated at Nailab, a technology business incubator in Nairobi.

Now doing piloting in Kenya, for a March 1 public launch, Nguru says they are building up support among school administrations andd parents and introducing the platform to students across the country.

Kenyan Chess Club Launches New Website To Draw Potential Players

0

The Kenyan-based Westlands Chess Club (WeCC) has just redesigned its website, adding more features, backed with the mission to turn Kenya into a “mad-chess country”, drawing more players.

Months after the WeCC came to existence, its old website with the same URL has been quietly up for two and a half years. However, the new site opened on Friday is expected to attract at least 600 followers from its Facebook page, set to fuel more chess-loving fans.

Marking this year’s latest development, in the drive to ease navigation of which would to cater for the growing number of chess players in and out of the country, WeCC is not just launching a school initiative that would encourage youth to play the game, but is set cater for players keen on receiving news updates and game reports posted on the new website.

Yet, as one of Kenya’s newest and most progressive chess clubs based in the Westlands suburbs, WeCC has come a long way years after chess was introduced in the country as early as the 1920s, say British journal reports.  The board game was officially registered as a club for in 1958 by the Nairobi Chess Club. Years later, as the game emerged in the country, Paras Gudka and his supporters, felt the need to open Westland’s very own club.

Thus, the Westlands Chess Club was opened in August 2011 having its base at the Westgate courts beginning with one chess board and handful of players. And today, it now accommodates at least 40 players at the Slush Coffee World, Parklands Nairobi, in tournaments and even on busy Saturday afternoons. Its membership packages cater for a wide range of players including chess veterans, complete novices and a few occasional spectators.

According to the WeCC website developers, the new site is expected to deliver better user experience for visitors to find information efficiently. It has a design that makes better use of screen space accessing it through a desktop computer, laptop or mobile phone.

“This site works really well on my smart phone too,” noted WeCC Director, Paras Gudka.

Visitors can now post comments under each news item and event pages making it more interactive.

While adding PNGs of games played in the WeCC tourneys would be the club’s next mission, participants of tournaments organised by the Club would be assigned a rating of 1300 at the start of their first Blitz, Rapid and Classical tournaments, all of which would be expected to be posted on the website for further details.

But for now, the names and URLs of its website’s pages will remain the same. To view the website, follow this link: http://westlandschess.com/

Veronica Mars Movie Poster: Unveiled!

0

Fans of the movie have gone through great lengths to bring back the well-loved character, played by Kristen Bell. The movie is a continuation of a TV show of the same title which aired for three seasons. In anticipation of this big screen adventure, we’ve got your first look at the film’s poster, which features star Kristen Bell and the tag line “She thought she was out.”

It’s a reference to Veronica moving across the country and becoming a lawyer… only to get a call from Logan at the outset of the film that changes everything. He needs her help – and you know she can’t say no, right?

veronica-mars
In February of last year, Marshmallows, which refer to the show-turned-movie fans, took to Kick-starter to show support for a fundraising project to create the Veronica Mars movie.
The Kick-starter project was created by series creator and now movie director, Rob Thomas. With a goal of $2 million, the project bursted at its seams at $5,702,153 with over 90 thousand backers.

“We will make the sleuthiest, snarkiest, it’s-all-fun-and-games-’til-one-of-you-gets-my-foot-up-your-ass movie we possibly can. I promise to give it my all. I promise to work my hardest to give everyone a little bit more Veronica, and I will be oh so honored to do so, Bell wrote on the project page.”

And indeed, the actress is truly back with her good old camera and P.I. skills. According to E! Online, Veronica Mars will be heading back to Neptune in the movie installment to help her ex-boyfriend Logan Echolls, played by Jason Dohring.

Logan has been accused of murdering his current girlfriend and Veronica leaves behind lover Piz (Chris Lowell) to run to the rescue.
Aside from the main cast, most of the Veronica Mars series characters will be played by the original actors and actresses including Ryan Hensen, Krysten Ritter, Percy Dags III, Tina Majorino, Francis Capra, Ken Marino and Enrico Colantoni, says Yahoo.

Veronica Mars is slated for a “March 14 [release] in AMC Theaters in select markets across the U.S.”

2

945481_555353037876672_671762640_nAuthentic Spare Parts is an on-line store for new and used (tokunbo) auto parts in Nigeria founded  by Emmanuel Paul and Ini Akpan, CEO and M.D respectively.

The two have been selling to the wholesale market in Nigeria for a number of years (and continue to do so) and say they know auto parts and understand the needs of the Nigerian market.

In an Interview with TechMoran, Akpan said, “We decided to open our first store in 2013 to address the needs of the public directly.  We stock Honda and Toyota parts at the store, but we have access to other vehicle brands as well.  We sell everything from quality engines to tools and accessories and everything in between.”

Authentic Spare Parts has a physical location at FedokOby Service Station on the LekkiEpe Axis where customers can come and chat with its sales team regarding their needs.  The store also has a mechanic on standby to help customers buy what they really need for their cars.  Through theirsite, individuals and companies can manage and monitor their purchase history.

971575_511314272280549_1290709200_nThe site works simply. Customers who visit www.authenticspareparts.com can browse, purchase and make payments online with their debit card, credit card, bank deposits.  Registration will allow customers to track their purchase history online, however, they can proceed through the purchase and payment system as a “guest”.  Once the payment has been made the customer can go to their store to pick up the item(s) at their convenience. The firm is set to begin offering the delivery of purchases by June 2014.

According to the founders there are many auto parts dealers in Nigeria.  However, not as focused on the customer experience like they are; and they also offer a variety of both authentic and quality new and tokumbo parts online and with a physical location.

18381_502397589838884_1956679492_nAkpan says they are driven by the need to address their customers needs, “there is a sense of hopelessness and fear when it comes to buying auto parts.  This sense of hopelessness and fear is lifted once they walk through our doors and our staff puts them at ease.  Hearing from our customers about their positive buying experience pushes me to wake up every day and run the Company. “

He also adds that realizing the vastness of their country (with over 170 million people)  and the needs that still need to be met makes them realize how far they have to go.  He says they get calls from Abuja, Ogun State, AkwaIbom State, Plateau, Rivers and many others, asking us how we can meet their needs for parts and as they fulfill this, they hope to be one of the top e-commerce companies, one of the top customer-friendly companies, and one of the best companies to work for in Nigeria.

Akpa is happy that mobile devices are making their way into Africa at a high rate, even ready to beat the first world. he says mobile devices are fueling the uptake of data and content and opening more opportunity for online businesses like his as users turn online for content. The self funded startup is not where it wants to be but as long as it is online, it can reach users from across the country who need spare parts for their cars.

The role of the Value Added Reseller (VAR) in Africa’s growing ICT market.

0

270806_177379165754464_448485452_nBy Akin Ande,  CEO at Chert System Solutions Nigeria

Even someone outside of the ICT market can see that Africa’s ICT market is growing at a phenomenal rate. This growth is predicted to continue for at least the next 5-10 years, as more multinationals invest and setup operations in Africa. However, the lack of enough visibly strong, credible and experienced VARs across Africa will mean that a large chunk of the IT spend will go to European and US multinational VARs, who will then export into Africa.

In the IT industry, a VAR (value-added reseller) is a company that has the skills and expertise to combine different IT components to build complete IT solution for their clients. So, when presented with a specific IT problem, a VAR might look at products from different vendors and combine them to create the best solution. For example, a computer chip, printer, hard drive, monitor and graphics software from different vendors, could be combined and packaged to create a computer-aided design system. Or another example could be to combine a barcode scanner, receipt printer and computer to build an ePOS (Electronic Point Of Sale) solution.
946607_173804812778566_525111880_nThe more strong VARs that are created across Africa, the more sophisticated the IT channels will become. This is will result in the more significant and substantial IT expenditures staying in Africa as we create trustworthy and valuable service.

To achieve this I believe as VARs, we need to focus on the following:

Understanding our client’s needs, rather than just selling them a product. This will mean Asking our clients relevant questing like “what do you need that product for?” or “why do you want that particular product?”

Focus more on adding value to our client’s solution rather than focussing just on price.

Focus on developing our product knowledge by investing in staff training and attending vendor training.

The stronger African VARs are, the more we will create local skills, create jobs, improve our local economy and YES make more profits which can stay within Africa.

That is why as the CEO of Chert System Solutions Nigeria, I am striving to provide our clients with a service rivalling that provided by our competitors in the developed world. We started four years ago in Lagos with $ 3,000 and now we are one of the biggest VARs in Nigeria, with business clients in 8 African counties.

**********

Ande launched Chert Computers in Nigeria in 2010 with just $3,000 and and within 1 year the firm won a$500,000 deal with AirTel/tech Mehindra in 8 countries in Africa. The firm is now one of the leading IT store in Nigeria and is set to launch across sub-Saharan Africa.

Value-Added Project Management Requires Diplomacy & Discipline says Accsys

0
Teryl

Implementation of hardware and software in business is important to secure harmonious interaction between supplier and purchaser to ensure successful project rollout said Teryl Schroenn, CEO of Accsys.

Schroenn explained that, “Effective system integration requires that both parties involved, the supplier and the customer, have an equal understanding of the situation. This is a major challenge, particularly in ensuring close collaboration and co-operation, but it is one that has to be addressed from the outset.”

Accsys is a member of the Business Connexion Group (BCX) and national supplier of people management software and hardware solutions within the HR, payroll and time & attendance space.

The company is positioned at the forefront of project rollout and solution integration within key sectors across Africa, specifically retail, commerce, government and manufacturing.

Schroenn says there is structured project management methodology available to help businesses, but the first priority is to keep channels of communication open. Regular meetings will ensure that deadlines are kept.

“These meetings are required to detail any variations and to make sure everyone understands that variations may push out deadlines on projects. This is a constant issue within projects and requires an intense level of ongoing diplomacy and consultation,” she says.

For this reason Schroenn believes there is a business case for implementing and running parallel with a vanilla version of the project, or a live proof of concept, then adding the customisation to requirements. She adds that this is not always possible, and depends very much on the size and complexity of the project.  It is a particularly successful model when rolling out a modular or a multi divisional solution.

Rwanda At Risk Of Business Scale Down

0

KT

Korea Telcom is reviewing their projects in Africa as well as reinforcing its competitiveness in the telecommunication area.

This action, according to their local media will scale down the telecommunication company in Rwanda as well as other African countries.

This is why, during the term of the outgoing Chairman Lee Suk-chae,  Korea Telcom signed an agreement in March 2013 to invest $140 million in Rwanda to build a fourth-generation (4G) mobile network that will serve 95 percent of the country’s population.

The company is still looking to expand its territory into Kenya and Uganda.

“One of the key priorities for the upcoming CEO is to recover KT’s telecommunications-related business. Synergy will be maximized only after realizing business structures that can generate profit in a stable manner regardless of market situations,” Korea Telecom official tells their media.

“The new CEO (Hwang Chang-gyu) will re-examine our African business projects from a zero-base,” he said.

The review of the overseas projects comes on the back of KT officials feeling the pinch in its domestic market as its globalization efforts are seen to have sacrificed its competitiveness locally.

“The outgoing CEO was busy following ‘trendy business projects.’ KT should set short-term, mid-term and long-term targets if it wants to earn results from overseas business projects that the company is involved in,” said Chang Joon-hyuck, senior vice president at Atlas Research and Consulting.

Meet Kolibree: World’s First Connected Electric Tootbrush.

0

Kolibree-Toothbrush-image-001Invented by Thomas Serval a French engineer and tech leader in the state, the Kolibree toothbrush, which syncs wirelessly with a smart phone to track brushing habits was unveiled at the international consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas.

Users will download a mobile app and connect via Bluetooth and the toothbrush will document every brushing using the three in-built sensors that record; the duration of brushing, whether all four quadrants are brushed, whether you brush up and down instead of just side-to-side making the tedious daily activity into a game.

Thomas Serval invented the “smart toothbrush” after suspecting that his children were lying to him about whether they had brushed their teeth, the brush working just like a regular one will mostly help parents monitor their children’s brushing behavior by connecting to their phones.

It also can share information with your social network or better still your dentist, the brushing data will also be via an API to let third party game designers develop new apps for the kolibree system.

The manual beam brush went on sale about a year ago also connecting via Bluetooth to show progress charts but like the Kolibree the beam doesn’t track the brush’s movement in the mouth.

“Don’t use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), they are monitoring your accounts and selling data to the governments. #SEA @Official_SEA16.” Read an instruction on Microsoft’s News twitter account.

This is the second time this Year SEA (Syrian Electronic Army) has targeted Microsoft having hacked the company’s skype, twitter and facebook accounts. The hacking group sympathetic to President Bashar Assad has also hacked its way to BBC twitter account.

The curious instruction posted by Microsoft on twitter was later followed by a Syrian flag post with the message: “Syrian Electronic Army was here via @official_SEA16 #SEA.”

“Microsoft is aware of targeted cyber attacks that temporarily affected the Xbox Support and Microsoft News twitter accounts. The accounts were quickly reset and we can confirm that no customer information was compromised.”

13 things to do before you turn 30

0

30 things

1. Go on a trip by yourself.

Whether it be backpacking across the continent or driving cross country, do it alone. Do what you want to do. See what you want to see. Sleep when you’re tired and truly live when you’re not. Speak with strangers, dance alone, eat exotic food and trust your instincts, but abandon your inhibitions. You are the tour guide.

2. Learn how to cook.

It’s sad that in this day and age people buy takeout every day instead of cooking. Buy a cookbook, turn on the Food Network, and experiment on what you see being cooked, it doesn’t have to be great, it just has to be edible.

3. Have your heart broken and Let go of the past.

Cry the really ugly tears – the kind that make your eyes puffy and your head hurt. Drink too much wine and watch too many chick flicks. Stay in bed for a few days. Scream his name if you have too. Learn from this feeling and be a better you, be a better partner and find a better man. Stop holding onto the resentment and the anger and the bitterness. The hurt and the embarrassment and the shame and the “Oh my God, I can’t believe I did that” are yesterday’s concern. It’s not worth it heartache. Just let it go.

4. Date the wrong guy & Go on a blind date.

Hell, date a few of them, we all have to kiss frogs before we get to our prince charming. Have some fun, learn a few things, gain a few tricks while you’re at it. Go on a blind date and make sure its a true blind date, not social media stalking beforehand. Embrace the unknown and have fun. You never know what might happen.

5. Run a marathon, climb a mountain, learn a new language.

Maybe not all of these things. Hell, maybe not even one of these things. But decide to do something, to learn something, to commit to something out of your comfort zone. Stop making excuses and just do it.

6. Take more pictures.

Weddings, graduations, anniversaries, births, first steps, etc. Have your camera ready. Life doesn’t slow down and there’s no rewind button to speak of. Make memories and capture them. You’ll be thankful you did.

7. Stop being so anxious.

Your job is stressful, your rent is due tomorrow, and your student loans are crushing you. At times it seems like the world is caving in on you, but it’s not. Always remember that no matter what, you’ll get through it. Hold your head up, life is too short to be miserable.

8. Be a better person.

Volunteer, hold the door open for strangers, go to a fundraiser because you believe in the cause, not just to network. Send a thank you letter to the troops. Put a huge amount of cash in the plate at church. Do something for others. Seriously, stop being selfish. Give back.

9. Fall in love with a man.

Not a boy, but a man. Someone who loves his mother and believes in something bigger than himself. Someone who holds the door open and stands when you enter a room. Someone who tells you you’re beautiful even when you’re in sweatpants and last night’s makeup. Someone who loves you and appreciates you. Cherish this man and treat him right.

10. Get healthy.

Your metabolism won’t work in overtime forever. Exercise more, eat better and stop drinking so damn much. Take care of yourself. Get up off the couch.

11. Learn to choose your words wisely.

Realize that you can’t take them back. Be smart, be wise and be careful. Regret is a terrible feeling.

12. Cherish those around you.

Love with everything you have. Say “I love you” when you mean it. Say “I miss you” when you feel it. Hug your friends. Tell your parents you appreciate them. Be emotional. Be affectionate. Be sincere.

13. Stop putting off tomorrow what you can do today.

Life waits for no one and time seems to be going by faster with each tick of the clock. Be productive. Stop being lazy. You have one life, live it.

And remember to figure out what you want to be when you grow up, it’s expected that you screw around at 20, questionable at 25, and completely unacceptable at 30. Figure out your life. Make a plan and make it happen.

African EduWeek Is Set On Improving Africa’s Quality Of Education

0

eduweek

This July, between the 10th and 11th the Sandton International conference centre  in Johannesburg will be housing the African EduWeek; which carries the theme “Empowering teachers to deliver quality education everywhere”.

Tanya Jackman, the event director said: “Our educators are the most central element in improving the education system, and they must have access to relevant training to develop and equip their learners with the tools required to succeed in professional and further education environments.”

African EduWeek reportedly forms the largest meeting and trading platform of its kind on the continent for improving the standard of education in Africa. The conference will focus on empowering teachers, strengthening school leadership, using ICT skills to enhance teaching and learning, improving FET colleges and the role of technology in the classroom.

“There could not have been a clearer illustration of the need for EduWeek than the matric results we have seen, and responses we are hearing from the education community. Learners are leaving school without the necessary tools to succeed, as we see with the high dropout rates from universities and youth unemployment, and this simply has to change,” added Jackman.

The event also offers teachers free, practical courses to improve their classroom and technical skills.

For 2014, African EduWeek has taken the bold step in remodeling the conference model to make the sessions more affordable and accessible to those who need them the most.

Zimbabwe’s Empire Communications Wants to be Country’s Startup PR Darling

0

innovationZimbabwe’s Empire Communications, a full- service public relations and communications agency, which specializes on the development and content management of new media tools wants to put young entrepreneurs on the map.

Empire Communications was founded and is wholly owned by Tawanda Chitiyo. I am inspired by a passion for new media projects, creative ideas, proven methodologies, strong media relations as well as flexibility, initiatives, and efficient execution. Also by the success stories of other young entrepreneurs who are broadening their horizons and opening up to limitless perspective.

TechMoran caught up with Chitiyo and he revealed his plans into the future of his firm below.

What exactly do you do?

We offer an integrated online, offline and mobile communications strategies. That includes marketing, advertising, awareness and promotion of goods and services using the mobile phone, internet (online) and outdoor LED screens (offline). The outdoor LED screen will be installed by the 2nd month of 2014 in Mutare, Zimbabwe’s fourth largest city.

Do you have any clients at the moment?

We have six confirmed clients but we have embarked on an aggressive door to door campaign mainly targeting small to medium scale retail enterprises (SME) and the response has been excellent. We have approximately 501 (SME, s) in Mutare. This figure is based on the number of valid shop licences with the City of Mutare Council. Most of these cannot afford traditional advertising and marketing methods so we offer them a cheaper alternative, in the form of direct targeted advertising on Facebook mobile and on Google. After the marketing campaign we will have a lot of clients.

 Are you seed funded?

We haven’t yet have access to any form funding due to the economic environment that we are operating in. According to the 2014 World Bank’s Doing Business report Zimbabwe is ranked 170 out of 183 countries, meaning it is one of the countries where doing business is very difficult and expensive. Therefore making it unattractive for investors and funders.

Where do you think your company would have achieved in two years?

In 2 years we would have finished our ongoing drive to deliver fresh vigour to the IT industry in Zimbabwe. We plan to create a unique and personal connection to the digital world for all the people in the rural areas and farms. Create a larger market share, profitability and geographic spread.

Do you have any expansion plans?

2014 we plan to venture were no one has dared to venture that’s the rural areas, farms and all the marginalised areas.  Introducing mobile web advertising, create interactive text messaging, conduct competitions and sell content. Sports betting, lottery style power ball and casino games on the mobile phone and online.

What would you tell the youth trying to start businesses?

Youths need to be persistent and patient especially in a patriarchal society like the one we are in were change is passionately resisted. Youths also need to embrace failure and learn from it and use it for our advantage.

Challenges you have faced and how you overcame them?

Mainly its legislation making it illegal for us to offer some services without a licence and the licences and application fees are very expensive. That’s also a one of the main reasons why we cannot get funding. But we always try to find loop holes that we exploit to work according to the law. Besides that we do not have any other challenges to write home about.

Hawaii man sues Warner Bros. over ‘Matrix’ movies

Hawaii-man-sues-WarnerBros.-over-Matrixmovies_1-11-2014_133778_l

A Hawaii man has filed a $300 million copyright infringement lawsuit, claiming the “Matrix” trilogy of science fiction films has striking similarities to his screenplay.

Playwright Thomas Althouse of Maui claims 166 instances in the movies are similar to parts of his 1992 screenplay, “The Immortals.”

“They took so much,” he told the Maui News. “The striking similarities are off the charts.”

Named in the lawsuit are Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., producer Joel Silver, directors and writers. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in the Central District of California in January 2013. Althouse said he was invited by studio executives to submit his story to the Burbank, California, studio in 1993 for consideration as a possible project. Defense attorneys, in court filings, deny such an invitation was made.

“There is no merit to this frivolous lawsuit,” Warner Bros. said in a statement.

Althouse claims the concept of the movie trilogy futuristic tales in which reality is actually simulated, created by machines to subdue humans, and a computer programmer leads a rebellion against the machines was born four months after the studio received his screenplay. The first film, “The Matrix,” was released in 1999. It was followed by “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” both released in 2003.

Because the lawsuit was filed more than 10 years after the first film’s release, the statute of limitations has passed. Althouse’s lawsuit is for claims against the two remaining movies. He said it took him 20 years to file a lawsuit because he was diagnosed with a stress disorder that prevented him from watching violent movies. He also said he heard the two other films were horrible and didn’t bother to watch them.

Althouse said he saw the first movie and just thought the similarities to his screenplay were a coincidence. But later, after seeing some images on movie websites, he decided to watch the last two films in the series.

Althouse said he “was like … ‘No way.'”

“I started researching immediately, and I was blown away,” he said.

Althouse claims there are “almost verbatim dialogue and character descriptions.” He has lived on Maui for 11 years, and has taught drama to middle school students.

Trial is set for June 17. According to court records, it’s expected to last up to eight days.

With fears that Free-to-Air (FTA) TV Channels will be no more, majority of Kenyans see no escape from the additional monthly TV bill even if its below $50.

However, allaying this fears that all subscribers will be forced to pay monthly subscription to access FTA, Mr Felix Kyengo, General Manager GOtv Kenya has said that the company’s GOtv Open Bouquet is a non-subscription FTA bouquet which requires no monthly subscription charges.

“This is an option for television viewers to receive their local free to air channels for a once off administration fee,” said Mr Kyengo. Currently the GOtv decoder is available at a special price of KSh 3,399 inclusive of 2 months GOtv Plus subscription from MultiChoice Agents countrywide.

The worst trends of 2013

0
It’s really amazing how fast the year of 2013 came and went. While there are some things we’ll miss about the past year, nobody will miss these 7 terrible trends, I only hope so… coz am addicted to candy crush…

harlem shake

Harlem Shake videos

The world may never know how Harlem Shake videos managed to go viral and stay popular for the better part of 2013. They don’t make sense and they’re certainly not funny. The only people who enjoy them are the people who actually make them, but forcing them on the rest of the world is annoying.

twerking

Twerking

Twerking is nothing new. Anyone who’s seen a hip hop video or been to a strip club in the last 20 years will can testify to that. Why is it then that in 2013 90% of the female population decided it was time to post ridiculous videos of themselves committing this act? It took a moderately sexy dance and turned it into an annoying blemish on every social media news feed on the planet.

planking

Planking

The fact that people laying flat on their face in strange places has gained such astounding popularity speaks volumes about the human race as a whole. We are so out of touch with reality that staring at someone in a prone position passes for entertainment.

instagram

Instagraming Food Pics

There has never been a time in the history of the human race that anyone has had the thought “I wonder what Billy is having for lunch right now”. You know why? Because no one cares what your food looks like unless you’re going to share. Please internet, stop showing us pictures of what you’re eating. No one cares.

candy crush

Candy Crush Saga

Of all the social media games out there none have gotten to the level of addiction that Candy Crush has. Unlike it’s predecessors Candy Crush Saga encourages you to force the game on your friends in order to keep playing, and while that’s a piece of marketing genius for future generations to admire, it’s annoying for everyone who doesn’t play the game. It’s about time Candy Crush went the way of Angry Birds.

sagging

Sagging Skinny Jeans

Remember how stupid everyone looked back in the 90’s when “sagging” your pants was cool? Do you also remember back in 2007 when it became popular for guys to wear skinny jeans and how stupid that looks? Why, oh why, have we decided to combined those two awful fashion trends into one super powered mutant of a fashion freak show? How is it even possible for your pants to fashionably when they’re so tight you need baby oil to get in and out of them? The physics behind it is mind boggling.

yolo

YOLO

If only one trend from 2013 disappears in the New Year it should be YOLO. For many years there was the Latin motto “Carpe Diem” was used to inspire people to make something of themselves and work hard to achieve greatness in the hear and now. In 2013 the phrase was bastardized into YOLO and used to inspire a generation to make poor life decisions all under the guise of wisdom. This is one trend we certainly won’t be sad to see go.

I wonder whats in store for 2014

CEO Weekends: Zimbabwe’s Prices.co.zw to Launch Across Africa With Amazon Prime Air-Fast Delivery

0

price.co.zw_logoZimbabwe’s Prices.co.zw, an online  department store with 90 minutes delivery guarantee is set to launch across Africa and the middle East in a move to make eCommerce efficient and loved by everyone.

Founded by Mr. Dakarai Martin Mshoperi and his mother Mrs. Grace Mshoperi, Prices.co.zw was inspired by the increasing adoption of online shopping in countries like Great Britain and the US, even as Africa lagged behind.

Groceries online

” We believe that people in Zimbabwe are eager to purchase their groceries online and that is one of the things that inspired me to develop this service,” Mr. Dakarai Martin Mshoperi told TechMoran. “I programmed the entire website. There are currently very few online shops operating in Zimbabwe. ”

Though he is not the first one in Zimbabwe to launch an online shopping store, he says Prices.co.zw has a smooth system for accepting payments and delivering goods. Customers currently pay using EcoCash and Cash on Deliveryand Visa while ZimSwitch vPayments are coming soon. Their major advantage over their competitors is that they sell groceries and deliver in 90 minutes said Dakarai.

Amazon’s-Drone delivery dream,

Just like Amazon’s Prime Air dream, Prices has plans to bring convenience to people who have busy schedules at work or at home, or people who like to spend less on fuel to drive to the supermarket, or people who want to avoid standing in queues, or people that generally prefer online shopping and want their groceries delivered straight to them.

Prices, run by Universal Intelligence, a software developing company incorporated  January 2013 is now looking for more investment from other partners purchase delivery vans and steadily expand to South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt and then to other countries like Madagascar, Dubai among others with the promise of variety of products and a delivery to buyers doorsteps in 90 minutes.

The site has various shops in Harare working as warehouses  and when a person places an online order for, say; Cooking Oil, Rice, Bread, and Drinks, the firm’s delivery man goes to SPAR, purchases the groceries and delivers them to the customer. The idea behind getting shops like SPAR to sell on prices.co.zw is that it makes them able to sell goods such as groceries online.

The Universal IntelligenceRevenue from deliveries

There are over 100 shops on prices selling various goods, he told us including shops like Edgars, Truworths, FABS Hardware, Bradlows, Solution Centre, iClik, Allan Murray Jewellers, Autozone, Bata, Creative Computers, Veterinary Distributors, and Topics among others. These shops sell their goods on prices.co.zw free of charge and Mshoperi says they aim to obtain their revenue from deliveries.

“We want customers to buy their groceries in bulk for the month on our website and have some average sales of $80 per trolley. Our delivery charge when buying from 1 shop is $15.” he concludes.

Though just starting, their portal works equally well, all a buyer needs is identify the products they want to buy, search for it, browse among the search results and then add it to their trollies. Time to tap into Universal Intelligence!

CEO Weekends: Here Is What You Don’t Know About The Sniper Anti-Virus From Bunifu Technologies

0

bunifu

Bunifu Technologies is an industry innovation leader founded in the year 2011. They are a nexus of engineering and programming and since inception Bunifu have developed more than 30 products ranging from mobile, desktop, web and engineering solutions and tools.

This start-up begun with the development of management systems, SMS solutions and Sikizi server and in the process of this all the start-up started receiving request to fix infected computers or unstable operating systems.

A project on Swochei Duplicate file scanner (a utility for removing duplicate files and folders in computer) is the breakthrough that led to the Bunifu team entertaining the thought of building the first African Antivirus, this coupled with the problem faced by most Antivirus customers.

The team started building the first prototype of Bunifu Sniper Antivirus on February 2012.

So here is what you would like to know about the Sniper Anti-Virus.

1. How long did it take actualizing the idea?

It took us 17 months. The team started working on Bunifu Sniper on February 2012, but this was preceded by the development of various modules and utilities by our team prior February 2012. Among these are

  1. Bunifu antipiracy module
  2. IWIN framework
  3. Swochei duplicate file Scanner
  4. Bunifu C# File search DLL (Library)

This utilities and modules had been developed in 2011 by our team.

2. What were the cost implications?

Can’t really quantify the amount. Considering the size of our team of nine and the 2  1/2 years of work on the various products that contributed to the success of our Antivirus. It’s evident that a lot of human resource and time went into this. Setting up an office and equipping it not mentioning the cost of running it made this project very costly.

3. How different is Bunifu sniper antivirus from other anti-viruses in use? /How effective is it?

Our Anti-virus comes with the following unique features. This are features not available in the other antivirus types. This have been tested and proven. The 2nd year computer science class at Kenyatta University participated in the testing and debugging process.

  • Wireless and LAN scanner: Can scan devices in your WIFI range or over a local network.
  • Document, File & Folder Repair and restore
  • Document, File & Folder unlock.
  • Winrar  internal Virus Scanner Plug-in
  • Wireless and LAN threat sensor.
  •  Ability to run in safe mode
  • Bunifu anti-piracy Licensing module for piracy protection.
  • Sniper Data Security Utility

It also comes with the following features which are not unique to it but are improved versions of the same.

  • Pro-active real-time file system surveillance and monitoring for threats
  • Internet and firewall security
  • Automated removable media scan.

4. Has it been tested? By who?

Bunifu Sniper has been undergoing testing and trial for 4 months by our computer programmers and engineering experts. In addition a computer science class of 80 students in one of the public universities took part in the testing and debugging process.

5. The team come from diverse backgrounds (Academically), how did this play out during the process of developing it?

The diversity especially engineering and computer science that happen to form a majority of the team (7 out of the 9 members) played out perfectly. As I have indicated above, the ability to scan and disinfect devices on your WIFI range and over a network is only unique to Bunifu Sniper Antivirus. This feature requires extensive knowledge on electronics, telecommunication, wireless networks and networking principals. With our experienced programmers translating this algorithms and concepts into computer program was easy.

The other 2 members of the team have been supportive providing ideas and insight to current business trends and legal aspects.

6. In terms of innovation how is the antivirus going to help in the IT world?

I believe the unique features will transform the security and Antivirus industry. Established entities will need to upgrade their systems and even might have to buy this technology from Kenya. It’s also important to note that this field is a serious revenue earner for some countries like Russia. We expect Bunifu Sniper to be a major revenue earner for not only Baringo but Kenya also.

Being the first African Antivirus, we hope to revolutionize the technology industry and make Baringo County, Kenya and Africa a brand to be recognized; a net exporter of technology and Engineering solutions just like India, Japan and South Korea.

7. What are the challenges your team faced while coming up with the anti-virus

  1. Financial constraints and      lack of funding for research has been a major challenge.
  2. Working in Baringo posed      another challenge in that there are no serious internet providers and the      ones available are costly.
  3. Lack of a testing unit. All      software related projects require elaborate test labs which are not      available in the country.

8. In terms of economic prospects-what do you anticipate to gain?

The Antivirus business is a multimillion business; some companies make up to Kshs 60 billion in after tax profit. Given the proper support and platform Bunifu Sniper can become one of Kenya’s largest companies.

It can also stimulate economic growth in the country by creating hundreds of jobs directly and thousands others in the sales and supply chain.

The interest shown by global technology giants in the country will only intensify once news about our Antivirus goes viral. This means more foreign investment in the country.

9. For long, employers have questioned the quality of graduates- with the innovation is this a vote of confidence that our institutions of higher learning is not all about theory/cramming to pass exams?

What the Bunifu Technologies team has achieved is an example of what functional education is all about. The team has sacrificed about two years living on shoe string budget piecing together what has now become the first African Antivirus.

The team comes from 5 different institutions of higher learning namely:

  • The University of Nairobi
  • Kenyatta University
  • Maseno University
  • Catholic University
  • Jomo Kenyatta University
  • Bartek Institute

Bunifu sniper is one among many products that our company has developed; our naming systems derive their names from their functionality. A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates alone, in a pair, or with a team to maintain close visual contact with the enemy and engage targets from concealed positions or distances exceeding the detection capabilities of enemy personnel. Snipers typically are highly selective and with

specialized training in high-precision, camouflage, field craft, infiltration, special reconnaissance and observation, surveillance and target acquisition. These are traits shared by our product, thus the name Bunifu Sniper Antivirus.

Central Bank Of Nigeria Unveils The Real Time Gross Settlement System

CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have announced the installation of a new Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS) that is integrated with a Scripless Securities Settlement System (SSSS).

This, the CBN Deputy Governor- Operations, Tunde Lemo said, was part of the execution of the Payment System Vision 2020 Strategy which sought to tackle limitations in the settlement system in Nigeria.

“It serves as the nucleus of the national payment system, as all payments finally settle in central bank money, through settlement accounts maintained for designated financial institutions,” said the deputy governor.

The RTGS is an interbank payment infrastructure that facilitates continuous settlement of electronic funds transfers on gross (individual), final and irrevocable basis.

He said: “Large-value payments are however settled individually as they arise, in real-time, irrevocably. This large-value settlement capability is particularly useful for interbank and government transactions.”

The Lemo maintained that SSSS would facilitate the electronic management of the entire life cycle of securities’ transactions as well as help manage the primary and secondary markets for securities and facilitate efficient open market operations.

“With the implementation of the RTGS and SSS, the Nigerian Payment System is positioned to progressively improve all retail payments schemes with a view to achieving the PSV2020 objectives and meeting world-class standards,” he noted.

The development is expected to stimulate rapid transformational developments in the financial markets allowing real-time settlements of transactions in the capital, commodity and foreign exchange markets.

Other benefits of these new systems include reduction and elimination of settlement and systemic risks in the payments system; provision of a collateral management platform to mitigate settlement risks and  achievement of instant value for bank customers.

The move would also help to enhance a robust infrastructure to handle faster processing of electronic payments related to banking and financial market services as well as the expansion of the functionality and effectiveness of government securities.

Lemo said the new RTGS is built on the Swift messaging standards to allow for safer, easier and faster interconnectivity with other payment system infrastructures both locally and internationally.
