Last year a friend went to Twitter asking for Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) to deliver. By delivering she was asking guys at the BAKE HQ (Kachwanya, Wamathai, Mwirigi, Gicheru and Bankelele among others) to deliver oven-fresh bread, chicken legs or cakes which I am sure they will never do even if they are exiled for a year in an open plan kitchen with all the ingredients, safe for Rayhab.

But here is their vindication, creating local content is no child’s play, regardless of it all this guys have put their careers on the line to do it and help others too!

BAKE has announced the dates for its third annual Kenyan Blog Awards seeking to reward active bloggers with awesome content.  To open doors for more content creators, they have launched  two new categories, a “Best Health Blog” category and a “Best County Blog” category raising the total number of categories from the current 15 to 17.

They have also opened submissions for blogs you think are great (like TechMoran.com for the tech category) from today January 10th2014 to February 10th2014 .

Please hurry and nominate us here.

Telecel-2nd-StreetYesterday Zimbabwe’s Financial Gazette ran a story claiming that Telecel Zimbabwe had defaulted on the conditions of its licence renewal.

The firm, owned by Telecel International and Zimbabwe’s Empowerment Corporation is the second largest mobile operator in the country and according to claims it had promised to pay for an initial $137 million for a 20 year licence before year-end.

Telecel Zimbabwe has however come out to deny these allegations and says it is true the agreed fee for the renewal of the organisation’s licence was indeed set at $137.5 million to cover the next 20 years and Telecel entered into negotiations which resulted in an agreement with the Regulatory Authority together with the then parent Ministry of Transport & Communications and the Ministry of Finance to pay the licence fee over an agreed period with a deposit of $14 million being paid forthwith.

Denying the allegations,Telecel Zimbabwe General Manager Angeline Vere in statement to the media said, “Our records at hand will confirm that instructions to pay the deposit were immediately processed through our banks. Both banks have confirmed to both regulatory and Ministry officials the obligation they have to Telecel to meet this commitment.

“The next installment is due to be paid in December 2014 and Telecel is geared to meet this obligation as per the agreed payment plan with Government,” she added.

Telecel International Limited is based in Egypt and is a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. which rebranded to Global Telecom Holding S.A.E.

The convenience of mobile payments continues to appeal to the market. It has proved easy and most of all a secure channel for Kenyans to transfer of money, payment of bills, school fees, making savings as well as borrowing money.

In the first 11 months of 2013, Kenyans transacted more than ksh1.7 trillion that represents a 23.7 per cent increase from 2013’s 1.4 trillion in the same period in 2012. This surpassed the country’s budget this financial year, which is sh1.6 trillion.

Financial institutions have increasingly taken up mobile money transactions by creating platforms such as Safaricom’s M-shwari and lipa na Mpesa, Kenya Commercial Bank’s M-Benki and Family Bank’s PesaMob.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)  announced that the applications to participate in the 2.3 GHz spectrum allocation auction are to be submitted not later than by 7 February.

The commission will be offering 30 MHz of unpaired spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band for commercial assignment on a national basis in the country. As a result of consulting stakeholders of the industry, NCC will allocate this spectrum in one unpaired block of 30 MHz, adjoining a 10MHz guard band with the adjacent 2.4 GHz band of 2360 – 2390 MHz – Spectrum on offer and 2390 – 2400 MHz – Guard Band

“The proposed licensing of 2.3 GHz spectrum has been influenced by the need to provide Retail Service Providers (ISPs and others users) with the requisite wholesale wireless access and bandwidth to provide service to their subscribers in consonance with the National Broadband Plan of 2013,” says the regulator.

The spectrum is offered by the Commission on a technology neutral basis. For roll-out of services, the NCC intends to follow the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendation setting aside spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band for the provision of wireless broadband services.

The Reserve Price for the 30 MHz of unpaired spectrum for a 10 year license has been set at $23 million.

After the auction NCC will give a 10 year spectrum license and Wholesale Wireless Access Service License (WWASL). The WWASL Operational License will attract an additional fee of One Hundred and Fifty Five Million Naira  (N155,000,000.00 / $) for the winner that does not currently hold a Unified Access Service License (UASL).

The Auction will take place during the week commencing 17th February, 2014.

The Teacher Who Taught the Chinese the Internet | The Story of Alibaba’s Jack Ma as Told by His Ex-VP in “The Crocodile in the Yangtze”

0

Forget America, China’s Alibaba handled $170 billion in sales in 2012, beating both Amazon and eBay combined.

Founded by a former English teacher, Jack Ma, Alibaba has grown to become the world’s biggest e-commerce site and the first to handle $1 trillion in cash from sales in a year.  With an IPO expected later this year, Ma is set to jump a few queues on the world’s richest list.

BlogPostHowever, everything wasn’t as rosy as it looks. Ma 43, has always been a self starter. He taught himself English as he grew during China’s Cultural Revolution. He practiced his English for eight years as he cycled from home to work as a guide to the tourists coming to Hangzhou, a city that is some 100 miles southwest of Shanghai. He was becoming more globalized than his friends.

An invitation to Australia by one of the tourist families changed his life forever, ma realized that China was broke. He went back home, flunked his university entry exams twice before he got admission to Hangzhou Teachers University, the worst at the time. The student teacher was then elected student chairman and then later as chairman of the city’s Students Federation. Upon graduation he was retained to teach at the university but he always wanted to get into the business world. His efforts to to be hired as a secretary to the general manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken failed.

Then in 1995 he went to Seattle as an interpreter for a trade delegation and there he was introduced to the internet for the first time, he was gutted that there was no data online about China, so they came back home and decided to launch a Yellopages for China called China Pages with a $2,000 loan. He knew nothing about a computer, had never touched a keyboard. After about a year, China Telecom their competitor invested $185,000 into their company.

Jack_Ma_2008He resigned after a short-while due to board politics. In 1999 he gathered 18 people in his house and told them his dream about e-commerce.  The raised $60,000 and began Alibaba.

He became known as the crocodile of the Yangzi after saying that, “EBay may be a shark in the ocean, but I am a crocodile in the Yangzi river. If we fight in the ocean, we lose; but if we fight in the river, we win.”

For those who want to dig deep into what happened inside Alibaba after its launch in 1999, the film, Crocodile in the Yangtze isa must watch. It captures the emotional ups and downs of life in a Chinese Internet startup company at a time when the Internet brought China face-to-face with the West.

Proudly promoted by Konga at just N500, the award-winning film follows Ma, as he grows Alibaba.com from an apartment with friends into China’s first global Internet company, even beating eBay and Amazon combined in sales. The Crocodile in the Yangtze has been screened in 11 locations around the world, and is directed by Porter Erisman an ex-VP Alibaba.com. Erisman worked for Alibaba for eight years.

TheMovieThe documentary, made available for the first time in Africa, a home to many internet Startups is set to be screened to the Nigerian tech community  on Tuesday Jan 14th at Ozone Cinemas in a move Konga says is rewarding for the Nigerian Technology and Business Ecosystems.  Sim Shagaya, CEO of Konga.com will introduce the film followed by a Q&A session with Porter Erisman, Producer & Director of the documentary. Other surprise guests will also speak.

Tickets are already available and might be out soon as they going for just  N500 on Konga.com. The ticket proceeds donated to the Yaba Police Station for Internet access provision. There will also be 5 free tickets given out to students from the departments of Computer Science, Engineering Department in the University of Lagos, and the Co-Creation Hub, Lagos (CChub).

Jennifer Hudson Inspires, Turns Emotional at People’s Choice Awards

0
There were any memorable speeches at the People’s Choice Awards last night.

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev joked about their break-up. Justin Timberlake thanked his beautiful wife, Jessica Biel.

But Jennifer Hudson stood out from them all, taking the stage to accept the Favorite Humanitarian award with her sister, giving props to God and then going on about the lesson her late mother taught her.

“My mother always taught us that without family you have nothing, and whether you know it or not all are family, and what happens to the other happens to us, so it’s very important to make a difference.”

Jennifer Hudson People’s Choice Awards Speech

In 2008, Hudson’s mother, brother and young nephew were killed in Chicago by her sister’s estranged husband, William Balfour. Three years later, he was found guilty of first-degree murder.

Hudson has managed to persevere, however.

She remains a very popular singer and actress, both among the public and also among those who know her best. It helps when she buys her friends a house.

FRANCE SERVES Google FINE OVER PRIVACY POLICY.

0

Google has been slapped a fine of 150,000 Euros (approximately $200,000) following non-compliant unified privacy policy in relation to the French law.

In addition to the fine, France’s privacy regulatory organization has demanded that the company post a warning on its French home page that states that the privacy policy from March 1, 2012 does not comply with French law.

“The extent of Google’s data collection, as well as by the necessity to inform the persons concerned who are not in a capacity to exercise their rights,” Justified CNIL on its demand that Google post the warning having found that the new policy had violated several provisions of the French Data Protection Act.

The committee however appreciates Google’s intent to streamline its privacy policy into one but still feels the consumer’s personal data is not sufficiently protected.

Google has been accused of not sufficiently informing its users of the conditions in which their personal data are processed not even of the processing purposes and data collection purposes. Consequently, consumers are not able to exercise their right of access, objection or deletion. Among others is the self-permit of the company to combine all the data it collects about its users across all of its services without any legal basis.

Google spokesperson assured the public of their full engagement with CNIL through the process, to explain their privacy policy and how it allows them to create simpler and more effective services.

The service will be set to move seamlessly from smart phone screens to big screen TVs. The step by the company is significant since other companies have tried pulling that before only to fail. The company will however need a couple of deals with cable channel owners to make the service viable.

Sony seems promising on the new service and will give the industry a completely new face which starts with a new term “cloud based TV service” from the usual “virtual MSO” (multiple-system operator).

Samsung electronics has revealed its 85 inch Bendable TV prototype this week in Las Vegas. Well the TV can be flat or curved with a touch of a button, a button on it remote control, of course and with the help of embedded electrical motors.

It is believed that the curved screen can enhance the viewing experience;in that owners will be able to determine how bent the screens should be taking into how many people were watching them and how far away they were sitting.

Another plus for this gadget is that the TV can be left flat against the wall when not in use, however critics say that the bending effect is small; hard to know the truth.

Samsung said such a design delivered the “most immersive viewing experience” possible. the 85-inch bendable TV’s true purpose appears to be its ability to provide a live, side-by-side comparison of picture quality on a flat and a curved screen.

The 85 inch TV is set to hit the USA markets in the course of the second half of this year, the price is yet to be revealed.

DecodedLyrics.com, Africa’s RapGenius, a music platform publishing lyrics of African artists is launching its new site in by the end of this month with more content, social integration and yes, great style and a nice user interface.

Speaking to TechMoran, co-founder Chika Uwazie said, ” When we (her and Juluis Sea) launched the platform last February we were really just testing the waters. The first version of Decoded was bare bones with no real design in mind. We saw that people really enjoyed the Decoded website and decided to do a design overhaul in order to reflect our new vision.”

Chika said the new site will be the music discovery platform they have always wanted it to reflect. It is also much more easier to navigate and they have added more social functions in order for fans to better connect with their favorite artists. They have also  included a way for people to annotate the lyrics.

uwazieWith over 1000 songs on the platform before its new launch and 500 artists, Chika says the, ” new website has all of the functions of the old website but now it is on steroids. It is loaded with more content including a suggestion tool to discover new artists.”

With a team adding up music on the site, Chika says they hope to grow that amount exponentially as they  fix minor tweaks to the website ready for the launch by the end of the month.

Though there are several music sites launching every other day, Chika says they are not just another lyrics site as they have other content on the website like videos and original music reviews. She adds that DecodedLyrics differs from the competition with their amazing design that is infused with the African spirit.  The portal also has artists profile pages that links to their songs, albums, videos, and websites that offer their music for sale.

Though with different business models, players in Africa’s digital music scene are doubling by the days growing steadily with players like iROKING headed by serial entrepreneur Jason Njoku, Truspot which is relaunching early this year, popular Spinlet, Kenya’s Mdundo which is expanding into East Africa and helping artists earn money via vouchers, GidiLounge, Iwantairplay and the recently launched Grumi among others.

Apple said in court documents filed in December that it has paid its leading outside law firm about $60 million to wage patent litigation against Samsung.

7 Most Anticipated New Shows for Mid-season 2014

0

1. Resurrection

WHEN IT’S ON: Starting March 9

WHO’S IN IT: Omar Epps, Matt Craven, Kurtwood Smith, Devin Kelly, Frances Fisher, Nicholas Gonzalez, Samaire Armstrong

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The small town of Arcadia, Missouri, is overrun with the walking dead! But unlike the flesh-munching monsters from that other series, these fresh-from-the-grave folks are just as surprised to be back as their families are to see them.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: Mean zombies are so 2012. Friendly zombies are so 2014. Resurrection looks like it’s about as close to art as broadcast television can get, with gorgeous imagery placed alongside deeply existential questions.

2. Intelligence

WHEN IT’S ON: The series debuts January 7

WHO’S IN IT: Josh Holloway, Meghan Ory, Marg Helgenberger, Michael Rady, John Billingsley, P.J. Byrne

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Gabriel Vaughan is a Cyber Command agent with a nifty upgrade: a microchip in his brain that allows him to connect to “the global information grid”—including the internet, satellite feeds, radio signals, and more—with his mind. Naturally, his cowboy attitude doesn’t fly with his stuffy boss, and his independence irks his attractive handler.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: The return to TV of Lost’s Sawyer has been long overdue, and Holloway’s role as a Ralph Lauren model who kicks bad guys’ asses while hacking computer networks with his brain is a good fit for CBS. But Intelligence isn’t all seriousness: The pilot features a nice mix of shooting, punching, and goofy jokes.

3. Believe

WHEN IT’S ON: TBD

WHO’S IN IT: Johnny Sequoyah, Jake McLaughlin, Delroy Lindo, Kyle MacLachlan, Sienna Guillory, Jamie Chung

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A young girl with emerging powers that she can’t control is being hunted by evil forces, so those who seeking to protect her bust an ex-con out of prison to look after her.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: I’m a sucker for mystery, and of all the new network series coming down the pike this midseason, Believe is the one we know the least about—it’s playing coy, and I’ve taken the bait.

4. Helix

WHEN IT’S ON: Starting January 10

WHO’S IN IT: Billy Campbell, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanime, Jordan Hayes, Meegwun Fairbrother, Neil Napier.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Scientists from the Center for Disease Control travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible viral outbreak, and once they get there, a lot of scary things happen!

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: I just love syfy, hope it doesn’t disappoint.

5. The 100

WHEN IT’S ON: Starting March 19

WHO’S IN IT: Eliza Taylor, Henry Ian Cusick, Paige Turco, Isaiah Washington, Kelly Hu, Thomas McDonell, Marie Avgeropoulos, Devin Bostick

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Set in the future after mankind has destroyed the planet with nuclear war, a group of 100 juvenile delinquents who don’t comply with an orbiting space station’s Draconian rules are sent back to Earth to determine whether it’s inhabitable. Meanwhile, the adults remain in orbit and engage in their own power struggles while periodically checking in on the kids to find out whether they’ve been eaten by mutants.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: One great thing to come out of all the recent Hunger Games madness—in addition to Jennifer Lawrence interviews—is society’s relaxed ‘tude toward teenagers getting slaughtered, and that’s a big part of The 100. The show is also way more “hard sci-fi” than most typical CW dramas, and a more extreme example of The CW’s current efforts to re-brand itself as a genre network. Think Lord of the Flies in Spaaaaaace! Also, there are mutant deers!

6. True Detective

WHEN IT’S ON: Starting January 12

WHO’S IN IT: Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Dunn, Michelle Monaghan, Alexandra Daddario, Tory Kittles

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Two detectives re-open a murder case in Louisiana.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: True Detective has a neat structure going for it: The series will jump back and forth between the present day and 17 years ago, filling in the blanks of the central story, and each episode will focus on a different character’s point of view. The show is also an anthology, so any future seasons will deal with a new case and a new cast of characters.

7. Mind Games

WHEN IT’S ON: Starting March 11

WHO’S IN IT: Steve Zahn, Christian Slater, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Gregory Marcel, Jaime Ray Newman, Vinnie Jones, Luis Guzman

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Two brothers—one who’s an ex-con and one who’s a brilliant but bipolar professor—start an agency that uses the science behind manipulation, motivation, and influence to help its clients solve problems.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: This is the latest series from Kyle Killen, the man behind Lone Star and Awake, so we’re expecting it to be more than just a lighthearted procedural, or at least to push the genre as far as it can go. And with Slater (we’re crossing our fingers his TV curse is broken) and Zahn (everyone’s buddy) at the front, there’s no shortage of talent.

‘Intelligence’ Series Premiere: Guess who’s starring…

He’s back!

Intelligence_CBS_series_logo

Its Josh Holloway. The Lost star made his official return to the small screen this week in CBS’ new drama Intelligence, which finds him taking on the role of action star as a U.S. Cyber Command agent with a microchip implanted in his brain that allows him to access the entire electromagnetic spectrum.

His character Gabriel Vaughn is basically the world’s best hacker, thanks to his complete access to Internet, WiFi, telephone and satellite data through the handy-dandy chip. Working alongside Gabriel is Secret Service agent Riley Neal (Once Upon a Time‘s Meghan Ory) and Cyber Command Director Lillian Strand, played by CSI fan favorite Marg Helgenberger. “I loved the script, I thought it was incredibly smart,” Helgenberger told E! News of her own decision to return to TV.

So what took Holloway so long to come back to TV? “‘Cause I’m lazy,” he joked when E! News chattted with him about his highly anticipated return. “That’s partially true. No, I wanted to do some movies and experience that world, so I did.” Well, we’re glad you’re back, sir!

And after playing the smooth-talking Sawyer on Lost for six years, Holloway wanted to take on a drastically different role.

“I definitely wanted to do something other than [Sawyer] and this was also something I grew up loving. I grew up with three brothers and we always played spy and sneak and all these games. I grew up wanting to be James Bond or a Mission: Impossible agent,” he said. “I was like this is a no-brainer and also it’s just a skill set I haven’t gotten to use a lot. I’ve done martial arts for years and I have a good bit of experience with weapons and so forth. It just naturally attracted me and I thought the script was really smart and current.”

What did you think of Intelligence? Are you as happy to have Holloway back on TV as I am?

Former Miss Venezuela and British-born partner killed in robbery

Caracas – Gunmen have killed a former Miss Venezuela and her British-born partner in front of their young daughter in an attack that shocked the crime-plagued nation, authorities said.

Monica Spear, a 29-year-old soap opera star, and Thomas Henry Berry, 39, were killed in what appears to have been a botched robbery after their car broke down on a highway in northwestern Venezuela late Monday, police and prosecutors said.

Their daughter, five-year-old Maya Berry Spear, was wounded in the right leg but was stable after receiving medical treatment after a crime that put a harsh spotlight on Venezuela’s soaring homicide rate.

Five people have been detained and were interrogated in connection with the killings, Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez said after a televised meeting with President Nicolas Maduro, who vowed to use an “iron hand” to crack down on crime.

The family was driving on a highway when their car hit a blunt object that had been placed on the road, forcing them to pull over, said forensic police director Jose Gregorio Sierralta. There are suggestions that the object was deliberately placed there as part of a planned armed robbery.

Spear waved down a tow truck, which stopped to help on the road between Puerto Cabello and Valencia in the state of Carabobo, Sierralta said. But as the two truck workers operated the crane, five armed men emerged on the road. The truck’s operators fled to a police station about 1.5 kilometers (one mile) away while the mother, father and child locked themselves in their car in a desperate attempt to shield themselves from the killers. But “the criminals fired multiple shots at the vehicle” before fleeing without stealing anything, Sierralta said.

Spear, who was a quarter-finalist in the 2005 Miss Universe contest, appeared in the Miami-based Telemundo series “Pasion Prohibida” (“Forbidden Passion”) and “Flor Salvaje” (“Savage Flower”).

The dark-haired actress, who lived in Miami, was on holiday in her native Venezuela. She had posted videos of the countryside and herself horse riding on Instagram in the last couple of days. Her husband was born in Britain but has Venezuelan citizenship.

Venezuelans who work in movies, theater and TV called a rally for Wednesday in Caracas to denounce the oil-rich country’s epidemic of street violence. Venezuela has one of the world’s highest murder rates, with 79 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2013, according to the non-profit Venezuelan Observatory of Violence.

The beauty queen’s killing shocked fellow artists in Venezuela, a country which is passionate about soap operas and the Miss Universe contenders it regularly produces.

Actress Gaby Espino, who lives in Miami, said she would never return to her home country.

“This is the day-to-day life in our country. We have all left Venezuela, fleeing in fear, terrified because this is the reality of our country. And today it happened to Monica,” Espino told the Telemundo network.

“I love my country, but I won’t set another foot in Venezuela,” she said.

Telemundo, a leading Spanish-language network in the United States, said in a statement that it was “deeply shocked and saddened by the horrible crime that hit our dear actress Monica Spear and her family.”

Jencarlos Canela, Spear’s American co-star and love interest in “Pasion Prohibida,” expressed grief on Twitter, writing: “I am speechless. I will miss you my friend @MonicaSpear.”

Addressing Spear’s daughter, he added: “My pretty, beautiful Maya, I love you. You are not alone!”
