White Space — The Solution for Africa’s Internet Access Crisis?

0

Broadband_pipeBy Kate Voss

In the age of widespread internet, where free Wi-Fi is available anywhere from coffee shops to libraries, Africa is undoubtedly lacking in regards to affordable and widespread access to the internet. In 2011, a UN commission stated that access to broadband internet is a basic human right, but Africa still stands as the world’s last major untapped market for internet.  According to Internet World Stats, the current internet penetration in North America is at a 78.6 percent, Europe at 63.2 percent and Africa at 15.6 percent.

White space broadband — a technology that makes use of the unused channels between TV broadcast signals left open to protect interference between multiple networks — might just be the solution Africa needs to solve its internet access crisis. Wireless broadband internet is able to utilize these “white spaces” in order to transmit data and provide remote regions, where traditional cable is expensive and hard to lay, providing anyone with the opportunity to access high speed internet.

A white space device (WSD) is designed to detect the unused areas of airwaves and utilize them to transmit signals for Internet connectivity. Due to the low frequency of the adapted white space radio waves, signals can travel up to a 10-kilometer radius, enabling them to reach remote areas. White space is not only cheap to provide, since it operates on an already existing structure, it also penetrates walls and has the ability to bend around physical obstructions (like trees, or better yet, mountains) far better than mobile signals can. These low-frequency signals are the reason that single, large TV transmitters can broadcast a signal to millions of residential homes, versus cell phone signals or cellular radio, which need towers every few miles.

Already, there have been various proposals, such as IEEE 802.11af that advocate using white spaces to provide and improve the availability of wireless broadband Internet access, and are working to define standards for future spectrum sharing. Powerhouse companies Google and Microsoft, who have been long-term supporters of white space usage, have already started trials in Kenya, Cape Town and Tanzania in hopes of lessening the digital divide and creating new opportunities for education, healthcare, commerce, and government services in Africa and other underdeveloped countries.

Africa currently heavily relies on mobile phones to access the internet, but only the wealthy can afford such devices, and mobile phone companies are hesitant to build expensive networks in remote areas. Satellite internet was once the only option for connecting rural communities, but now, if white space technology proves effective, African countries could have access to affordable broadband access that requires less set-up, runs faster, and costs less.

Google is already claiming that their white space trial, which began in March and implemented white space Wi-Fi in ten schools in Cape Town, has had positive results. The company announced that, “After six months, the trial has been a success. The participating schools, which previously had slow or unreliable Internet connections, experienced high-speed broadband access for the first time. Teachers were able to use videos in their lesson plans, make Skype calls to other schools, update school websites, and send regular email updates to parents. Students could use educational videos for research. Because the service was better and faster, teachers and learners used the Web to enrich the classroom experience.”

In addition to the Google white space trials in Cape Town, Microsoft launched a white space pilot in rural Limpopo. Microsoft hopes to prove that white space technology can be used to meet the South African government’s goal of providing low-cost internet access to 80 percent of South Africans by 2020. The company worked with the University of Limpopo as the hub for a white space network that would provide internet access to nearby schools in local communities, and also provided each school with Windows tablets, projectors, laptops and solar-panel chargers.

Microsoft previously worked with Tanzania and Kenya, and those trials proved that white space technology is an excellent solution for internet access in rural areas. As of today, the Kenyan government reportedly is delivering bandwidth speeds up to 16mbit/s to communities which previously lacked internet access and electricity. Likewise, in Google’s South African white space trial, the goal was to ensure that white space would not interfere with broadcast channels and that, too, was also successful.

World Bank research shows that a 10 percent increase in broadband penetration can result in an extra 1.4 percentage points of annual economic growth, but there are further benefits if Google and Microsoft’s tests prove successful. As the companies are working to perfect white space technology, there’s no doubt that any amount of increased internet access will help improve education by providing more resources and learning opportunities, strengthen the government by allowing for more interaction, and give Africans their basic human right — access to the internet.

UGANDA’S NEW TELECOM TO BEAT “TOP DOGS”.

0

New telecom’s launch in Uganda promising to arrest network problems and insufficient service provision is underway expected to roll out services early next month.

The Telecom has also asked the state’s citizens to put a name on it with a prize to earn on whoever gives them a name. “Give us a name” it says on its website. Ugandans have however dished out a few names to suggest the new telco’s name.

With almost 40 licensed mobile operators through Uganda Communication Commission, the telecom hopes to penetrate the local market that feels congested with 17 million subscribers despite having only five companies actively engaged to the market.

Mark Kaheru, a market analyst pointed out on the loop holes in the market industry in terms of reach and consistency from the current players, which the upcoming mobile operator promises to fill. “Sometimes I spend two days without network, if we get a new entrant who can provide better services, I will be the first to move.”

In a recent case of Warid one of the major telecoms in Uganda trying to woo customers  by providing low call tariffs that largely attracted customers however landing the company to a ditch having to sell its stake to Airtel due to company struggles.

YAHOO CHIEF MARISSA MAYER APOLOGIZES TO USERS FOR HECTIC WEEK

0

Marissa Mayer on Friday apologized to yahoo mail users who were locked out of their accounts for quite a tangible time this past week.

The problem resulted from hardware breakdown in a data centre that affected the storage system late Monday subjecting the users to the lock out all week causing massive inconveniences.

The affected fraction said to be one percent represents 3 million out of 280 million users who couldn’t retrieve their emails on Yahoo, inability to access their accounts, display of an outdated “scheduled maintenance” page that was a confusing incorrect message to the users. This provoked furious comments on social media with users saying they would switch to rival email platforms like Gmail for better assured services.

“For many of us, Yahoo Mail is a lifeline to our friends, family members and customers. This week we experienced a major outage that not only interrupted that connection, but caused many of you inconveniences- that’s unacceptable and it’s something we’re taking very seriously.” Mayer wrote.

Mayer went ahead to say the case was isolated and resolution for the affected accounts was nuanced. “It’s unfortunate the outage was much more complex than it seemed at first, which is why it took us several days to resolve compounding issues,” said chief Mayer.

Gravity Review

0

gravity

The best space film ever done, so far.

Gravity is a traumatic tale of survival that unfolds within space, as envisioned by the director of Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Alfonso Cuarón. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone, tied to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

The 4 year process that Gravity took to come to life involved plenty of typical film-making challenges, but also the process of actually inventing technology to make the movie possible. As the director states, “It’s not a film that could have been made before now.” Initially he thought that it’s a small movie, and with only two characters, they would be done in a year. This wasn’t the case as the mapping out process of the film was being done; it became very apparent that the technology to create it didn’t exist, so they had to invent the technology. This, to them, was a process of discovery as they had no idea of what they were doing.

But how realistic is this movie Gravity, you ask. Well from my research I found out that in this case, the space-shuttle mission is the victim of a phenomenon first explained in a 1978 scientific paper called “Collision Frequency of Artificial Satellites: the Creation of a Debris Belt by Donald Kessler and Burton Cour-Palais. The researchers explain how debris from a satellite collision can have a cascading, or chain-reaction, effect with other satellites. Unlike shrapnel here on Earth, which travels for a distance before gravity pulls it to the ground, each piece of collision debris in space just keeps moving, circling the planet in its own independent orbit, until it hits something, or eventually burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere. This phenomenon is called the Kessler Syndrome.

Am even lacking in movies to compare this to (maybe In Time), since it’s just so refreshingly new, it’s a rare breed. I would recommend all to see this movie and especially at IMAX 3D. Its a ground breaking, beautiful and technically perfect movie of which am quite sure film schools will be studying in future. 9.1 stars out of 10 because I love a movie with brilliant visual effects and makes you wonder if it really was done in space.

Elysium Review

elysium 3

Its a sci-Fi Fairy Tale of the Haves and Have Nots

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a perfect man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

If you’ve been watching movies this year you’ll note that they all kind of fixated on the earth’s annihilation, movies like After Earth, Oblivion, World War Z and even the comical This is the End. The director, Blomkamp, doesn’t consider his movie to be far flung science fiction though; it’s the unequal class struggle between the 1% and the 99% that explains why Elysium exists in the first place. The director keeps the action moving fast enough that there isn’t time to look into the plot until the movie is over. It’s worth seeing, if not for the action then for its futuristic technology.

We have advanced robotics that police over the poor while they work in hazardous conditions. I wonder why not have the robots go into the radiation filled rooms and finish off the work. Also there are space shuttles that cater to singular persons (the rich of course) and it’s a matter of minutes before they are in space, surreal. There are also those medical beds that cure anything, wow! Blomkamp doesn’t spend any time explaining how these miracles of nature work, which would take hours of complicated scientific jargon that no one would understand or believe, so it’s entirely skipped. Anyway, the basic principle is, be a citizen of Elysium, and literally any illness possible is cured. Got cancer? Not anymore. Did a grenade literally explode in your face? It’s cool bro, there’s an app for that. Seriously, all those medical disasters are completely cured in seconds. Also everyone on Elysium has one of these in their house like it’s no big deal.

Hopefully by now we understand that intentionally misusing technology is one of the quickest routes to dystopia. And while some people do abuse modern wonders, I think humanity does a good job of handling big innovations appropriately. Still, it’s science fiction like Elysium that reminds us all just how important it is to share the fruits of our technological labor. 9 stars out of 10

Man of Steel Review

0

man of steel 2

Is Man of Steel true to Superman?

I was surprised that Man of Steel had nothing like a Fortress of Solitude. Instead, it had an ancient Kryptonian ship buried in the ice which Clark brings back up and running with the help of a hologram of Jor-El. To my understanding, the ship was not of Jor-El’s design and not catered to helping his son understand who he was or contain information tailored to his son, it just happened to be there as a remnant of Krypton’s colonization program. The technology used to create both the under-armor of Kal-El’s suit and the technology used to activate the ship was both compatible with the technology created by the Kryptonians 20,000 years ago. So I ask, do you mean that Kryptonian technology has not evolved in all those years? Is it hard to believe in technology which may reach an apex and then never develop significantly beyond that point?

Man of Steel has a greater fixation of the doomed planet than any Superman film before it, but at the same time, it’s a very different Krypton from any we’ve seen before. Krypton was frequently portrayed as a vast, technologically advanced world filled with wonders both mechanical and monstrous. In execution, however, the look of the planet is far from what we are accustomed in the comic books and previous movies. Gone is the colorful sheen of those comics, replaced with a largely grey and orange color palette that owes more of a debt to recent blockbusters such as Lord of the Rings and John Carter.

Man of Steel throws out the sunny spirit, clever charm and wacky humor of the Christopher Reeve starred 1970s and 1980s films. It brings the character in line with the recent fashion for gritty, brutal, rather glum tales of superhuman loners struggling to defend a world that doesn’t appreciate their pain or sacrifices. Though we see the transition of a young Clark Kent into manhood, and as a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

In summary, this is a super hero movie that even Marvel fans will appreciate as it’s giving a whole new level to a classic story, turning the most beloved hero in an actual hero and mixing a great graphic novel specialist with great digital artists to give you a full action packed movie that makes a good foundations for sequels. Other movies comparable to this I would say are Iron Man 3, Star Trek into Darkness and The Dark Knight Rises. How many stars you ask, well i give it 7.8 out of 10.

CEO Weekends: New Model Predicts Mass Atrocities That Can Alert Governments And NGOs

0

Some 1.5 billion people are affected by conflict, wars and atrocities in developing countries, notes a 2011 World Bank World Development Report. However, the events are expected to lessen, as mathematical models that use existing socio-political data to predict mass atrocities will soon alert governments and NGOs on taking preventative measures, winners receiving awards from a competition run by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and NGO Humanity International.

In the Tech Challenge for Atrocity Prevention competition, the winners announced on 18 November are set to do further research and pilot their innovations. Reports say that the top five winners from different countries won awards ranging between US$1,000 and US$12,000, among nearly 100 entrants who developed algorithms to predict when and where mass atrocities are likely to happen.

The competition began from the premise that certain social and political measurements are linked to increased likelihood of atrocities. According to organisers of the competition, the new algorithms could help governments and organisations identify risky areas, thus allowing them to intervene before mass atrocities take place.

In the award-winning mathematical model, the algorithms use sociopolitical indicators and data on past atrocities as their inputs. The data was drawn from archives such as the Global Database of Events, Language and Tone, a data set that encodes more than 200 million globally newsworthy events, recording cultural information such as the people involved, their location and any religious connections.

The Model Challenge, which was the last of five sub-challenges within the overarching Tech Challenge for Atrocity Prevention launched in 2012, successfully drew in new minds and thinking as well as added incentive to develop solutions to challenging problems like atrocity prevention, say reports.

Citing the example of the post-election violence in Kenya that began in 2007 and killed more than 1,000 people, the US Institute of Peace’s Genocide Prevention Task Force put together a list of countries at highest risk of mass atrocities based upon variables known to be associated with such atrocities – yet Kenya was not on the list when the violence ensued, reports continue to say.

In all, the USAID and Humanity United plan to work with the winners to develop and pilot new tools for atrocity prevention.

CEO Weekends: Iquit Smoking Technology Offers Franchise Opportunities In Africa

0

It is possible to quit smoking in an hour, reducing risks of acquiring diseases like cancer, notes Iquit Smoking, motivated to spread the message further by offering individuals an opportunity to franchise their habit-quitting technology.

“Our patented technology, refined expertise and mature product will guarantee that we will be leading the competition for many years to come,” reads an inscription on the Iquit Smoking website, regarding franchising the technology, “Our experienced team is well positioned to give continuous market leadership into a stable international network with high growth potential in an expanding market.”

The idea of “IQS” as a franchising system was born in 2001 in Europe, when a team of professionals consisting of medics, scientists, marketers of the innovative program aimed to curb the addiction, decided to launch it in the international market. And eventually open franchises.  Till then, Kenya became home to the first I Quit Smoking center in Africa in 2009, adding to the list of over 400 centers of its kind worldwide fighting smoking addictions.

“We plan to open up more branches in Kisumu and Mombasa,” Gheeta Dhanda a Therapist of Iquit Smoking Kenya said in an interview, revealing high hopes to reach out to many addicted by cigarette smoking. “We treat 25 to 30 people a month and in a good month, we see about 60,” noting that since the organisation began in 2009, close to 900 clients with a 90 per cent success rate have been treated.

The IQS technology known as auricular therapy combines ancient and modern technology plus one-on-one personal care programs of which, is becoming a popular option to those who would like to quit smoking.

Yet, the World Health Organization estimates that by 2015, the number of smokers worldwide is expected to rise from the current 1.2 billion to more than 1.6 billion. And in African countries like Kenya, the 2011 National Bureau of Statistics stated that the consumption of cigarettes in 2008 was 10.073 billion sticks; in 2009, 11 billion sticks, while in 2010 it was 12.157 billion sticks.

And if that trend of tobacco use is not reversed, disease burdens resulting from tobacco related illness include cancers, heart disease, inflammatory diseases of the trachea, blood vessels and other body organs would be on the rise, say experts. Maternal and child problems include miscarriages, deformities, premature births, underweight babies, stillborns and infant deaths as risk factors, in addition to hormonal problems such as impotence and eye diseases to mention a few.

Nevertheless, close to three quarters of smokers have tried to quit, using acupuncture inclusive of a laser or needles, medical follow up with Zyban a drug, patches, and through “cold turkey” or “will power”.

But when smokers fail to quit even after trying various means, IQS swears that their personalized, interactive treatment method comes to the rescue. According to IQS, the Auricular therapy removes the craving of substances such as nicotine found in cigarettes, a root cause of addiction. Yet, nicotine has been declared a highly addictive drug, compared to heroin, cocaine and alcohol, says the organisation.

The Auricular Therapy includes a Reflection Instrument Scanning Electro-pulse (R.I.S.E) device and an instrument that gently touches certain points of the ear lobe, helping the body release beta endorphins that block the craving of cigarettes.

Before the hour long therapy, the therapist during the meeting records key indicators of the smoker’s habit as well as personal information such as how many cigarettes he or she smokes in a day, when they began, medical history, health conditions to mention a few. However, the therapy is not proven to be safe on expectant mums, epileptics or individuals wearing a pace maker.

The data for fit patients is then programmed into the patented R.I.S.E device in which the computer software creates an individualized program. Using a special instrument, the R.I.S.E device delivers a small electric current to key points (as in acupuncture an ancient healing art) on the earlobe.

Then a flow of endorphins known as compounds naturally made in the body are released throughout the body, not only making the person feel energetic but removing the craving of cigarettes.

Lasting one hour, the smoker is guaranteed a 90 per cent chance of quitting the habit. And after 10 days, with the cravings gone, the nicotine in the body is flushed out by fresh fruits, vegetables and water.

However, those highly addicted or who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes per day are recommended to return after six months for follow up. A second session is worth half the original cost.

And after recovery, former addicts can open franchises of the technology. According to Iquit smoking therapists, this system is set to create new standards in smoking cessation because of its “unparalleled success rate”. Thus, the IQS program allows partners to participate in this growth and capitalize on the profit potential through franchising and licensing opportunities worldwide.

For details on quitting smoking or opening a franchise, send an email  info@iqskenya.com.

CEO Weekends: Khan Academy Offers Free Coding Techniques

0

The Khan Academy usually offers online coaching lessons for students that wish to excel academically in subjects such as math, biology, chemistry, to mention a few. But this week, the Academy will be marking the Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) by giving online subscribers a one hour chance of sharpening coding skills.

“This week, over five million people across 167 countries will try out coding for the first time,” noted Salman Khan, the founder of the Khan Academy, “at your end of your hour, you’ll have coded your very own greeting card to send to someone this holiday season.”

The activity coincides with the CSEdWeek, an annual program dedicated to inspiring students to take interest in computer science that was originally conceived by the Computing in the Core coalition. And for the first time this year, Code.org is producing CSEdWeek for the first time this year, recognising the birthday of computing pioneer, Admiral Grace Murray Hopper born on 9 December 1906. The event would continue this weekend.

To mark the celebration, many computer institutions among others that focus on the ‘STEM’ subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics, like Khan Academy have joined in the celebration, offering millions a chance to code for the first time.

“When I first started Khan Academy I managed to pull the site together with some pretty rusty coding skills I had picked up in college. The founders of Facebook, Instagram, and Google all started their journeys with just one line of code. That’s how all great coders start out,” noted Samanl, a witness on the benefits of coding not only claims that coding is as simple as typing.

The Khan Academy now boasts of having millions of followers. The Academy is a not-for-profit organization that runs with the goal of “changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere”. Thus, its resources have become available to students, teachers, home-schoolers and even adults returning to the classroom after 20 years offering its materials and resources are available to completely free of charge.

In the online Academy, library content is available to students topped with interactive challenges, assessments, and videos from any computer with access to the web. Moreover, coaches, parents, and teachers have unprecedented visibility into what their students are learning and doing on the Khan Academy.

Its library content covers math, science topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and even reaches into the humanities with playlists on finance and history. Each problem in a subject like math, is randomly generated, giving ample practice material. Every single problem is broken down, step-by-step, with the click of a button. Subscribers can even watch a related video if more help is needed, say developers.

“I enjoyed the online lessons; they helped me a great deal when I was struggling with chemistry!” commented Olivia Doobay, one of the Academy’s subscribers. But while coding can seems challenging experience to many, Khan Academy has now created an interactive hour of coding that would help individuals how to code. Click here for details.

Star Trek Into Darkness

0

Startrek into Darkness

As someone who has grown up watching sci-fi movies, I have seen almost every Star Trek movie and suffered through characters/actors who I didn’t care for, and I realize we all have opinions about what makes this version so enduring.

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror, from within their own organization, has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew. The action is intense, the friendship deepened between the characters, the twists and turns are a bit predictable at times, but that is because of the franchise as a whole. I am already excited for the next movie.

Star Trek – Into the Darkness is fittingly named, it is rich in plot detail and exciting to watch especially in 3D. It will have many people sitting on the edge of their seats, willing those involved in the battle to succeed. Even the villain warrants a certain amount of sympathy from all fair minded people. The movie has some cliché moments, which can’t be avoided often with a movie this scale, however they make use of them well and still pack plenty of surprises.

The people behind this movie got to have their cake and eat it too; they made the most action-packed Star Trek movie ever, but at the end of the day, it’s also a statement of the core ideals of Star Trek and is to the norm. My advice is go, watch and be thrilled by a brilliant film. I know not all Trekkers will agree with me but let the haters hate, those who cannot embrace change can go sit and continue watching the old Star Trek. I boldly give this movie: 7.2 stars out 10, reason being the dialogue isn’t that awesome, but I do love the action. Other movies I compare this to are Matrix, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Riddick and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Nigeria has sufficient agencies to combat cybercrimes – Gbenga Sesan

0

An expert has decried the existence of too many agencies in the fight against cyber crimes in Nigeria. According to Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, the nation does not need any additional agency to combat cybercrimes.

In an exclusive interview, he advised that instead of setting up new agencies, what the existing agencies should do is to update their knowledge base on cyber crimes.

He said: “We already have too many agencies – EFCC, ICPC, Police, etc. They should all learn how to handle cyber crimes same way they learnt to handle new crimes that emerge. They need to retool, and un/relearn, not create another special money-draining but ineffective institution.”

He said the incessant call for creation of new agencies may not be unconnected with the desire of those who want to be in charge of the coordination of the fight against cyber crimes in Nigeria.

“For one, many people want to be in charge of the coordination, as either the coordinating agency, or to have a say in who manages the agency that could be established to manage cybercrime ‘policing’ in Nigeria. Fortunately, the talk of establishing an agency isn’t as popular anymore,” Sesan said.

He described the move by the Nigerian Senate to remove the controversial Section 13(3) of the Bill for an Act to Provide for the Prohibition and Punishment for Electronic Fraud and Crime in all Electronic Transactions in Nigeria as a wise one.

According to the section of the bill, individuals who use electronic channels to share information considered threatening to national security or that could incite against government could spend up to 7 years in jail or pay a fine to the tune of N5 million.

He said: “The reversal is a wise move by the Senate and the accompanying statements around assuring citizens that their rights won’t be tampered with is reassuring – even for a government institution not known with integrity of promises.

“Citizens should now realise that their complaints are useful, especially as it relates to contribution to lawmaking processes;

“Social media, the platform under attack (alongside general Internet Freedom) and also channel of expressing disgust at erring policies, is now a much more powerful tool than it was in 2010 (when it was used to organise the first set of social media-led protests), 2011 (when it was used to monitor elections) or 2012 (when it was used heavily for Occupy Nigeria protests).”

Carmudi set to launch mobile website, reveals popular brands

0

Karl-Johan Sturesson, Country Manager of Carmudi in Nigeria has revealed that the online vehicle marketplace would launch its mobile site before the end of the year or early next year. In an exclusive chat, he also revealed that Toyota and Honda are the most popular brands on the platform.

On the efforts that the marketplace is taking to ensure that stolen vehicles are not displayed on Carmudi.com.ng, he said the company visits the car dealers.

“We visit dealers by ourselves to verify that they are a legitimate dealer and up to the standards that meet the Nigerian Dealers Association´s conduct and guidelines. Then for individuals who list themselves, we contact them directly and require proof of identification and proof of ownership of the car,” Sturesson said.

On how the marketplace would be affected by the government’s decision to raise taxes on imported cars starting from 2014, he said both visitors and dealers would benefit from Carmudi’s premium services.

He said: “Our premium services will give both the dealers and the visitors an advantage when selling or buying their next car giving our broad selection of cars and visitors.” He added: “When prices will increase, it is even more important for dealers to have online presence to get connected to more buyers around Nigeria and West Africa.

“We will also contact our dealers and ask if they want to adjust the prices to the potential new price levels.”

He revealed the company is currently partnering with Nigeria’s major car dealers, and discussions are underway with West Africa’s largest car market.

“[Our partners are] the major dealers such as Coscharis, Lanre Shittu, Globe Motors among others. [We are] also working on a new partnership with the largest car market in West Africa, Berger Market Dealer Association, that will be up in full strength from the beginning of 2014,” he said.

The company announced its popularity has “exploded…just two months after launching, showing promising signs for Nigeria’s automotive industry.”

“Monthly visits to Carmudi Nigeria (formerly known as Carmido) have increased by a massive 35,000% since April 2013 making the Nigerian website the fastest growing business of all Carmudi brands,” the company said in a statement.

Revolution

We all know that our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if one day it just stopped working? Well in this series, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly plunged back into the dark ages. Planes fell from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication became impossible. And without any modern technology, no one could tell them why. Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet small communities, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it?

On the borders of small farming communities, danger lurks. A young woman’s life is dramatically changed when the local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously had something to do with the blackout. They capture her brother and this brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.

Now in its second season, it’s more intense and keeps you wanting more at the end of each episode. JJ Abrams is a brilliant producer having accolades for Star Trek, Lost, Fringe, and Super 8, just to mention a few. Though there are times you watch this series and you are like, ‘please someone shut up that sobbing girl’!!! The show states that even batteries and motors will not work, I can see how one could create a world without electrical power but to completely stop the functionality of batteries takes the work of some black magic. Now unless they incorporate Gandalf into the story line I do not see this as a practical scenario but that’s the beauty of imagination.

If you are looking for reality in a TV series, then this is not for you. The drama it provides, apart from the sobbing protagonist, is worth it and you are drawn each week. I would give this series a rating of 6 stars out 10 because it really hasn’t gone under my skin. At first when I watched the first 2 episodes, I thought it sucked, but then I continued and the reality is it gets you thinking, ‘this can happen and this can’t happen in real life, but if it does happen am I really prepared? What would I do if we went back to the dark ages?’ So I say again, give this show a go, you might just like it…

Carmudi Vehicle Marketplace Records Five Digit Growth in Africa

0

CarmudiOnline marketplace Carmudi has exploded in popularity just two months after launching, showing promising signs for Nigeria’s automotive industry. Officially launched in October across three continents, www.carmudi.com.ng is fast positioning itself as an industry leader in Africa – and consumers are responding. Monthly visits to Carmudi Nigeria (formerly known as Carmido) have increased by a massive 35,000% since April 2013 making the Nigerian website the fastest growing business of all Carmudi brands.

The growth comes at a time when Nigeria’s automotive industry is already in the spotlight. The federal government recently announced plans to increase taxes on imports in an effort to boost local production. Hence, Carmudi is now perfectly placed to meet consumer demand as the Nigerian car industry changes shape.

Sacha Poignonnec, co-CEO of the African Internet Holding, said: “The political changes in 2014 regarding the taxation of imported cars are surely a high advantage for Carmudi to succeed in Nigeria. But other than that, Carmudi’s model – featuring a user-friendly interface and high security standards to safeguard against fraud – has clearly struck a chord with motorists in Nigeria in the past months. Our strategy of focusing on the ‘white spots’ on the internet map is working, as more and more buyers and sellers turn to Carmudi for up-to-date listings and price comparisons in their region. We expect to see further growth in Nigeria in 2014 as Carmudi prepares to launch in new African markets next year.”

The vehicle marketplace www.carmudi.com enables customers to easily find or sell their car, motorcycle or commercial vehicle online. At the same time, vehicle dealers and agents get a trusted online presence through a personalized webpage. Carmudi offers diverse vehicle listings, an intuitive website design and high security standards to avoid fraud. The business platform operates under a high level of transparency through professional photos, updated listings, detailed descriptions, reports and rankings for 100% of its vehicles in each market. The Carmudi platform helps sellers manage their inventory in a fast, easy and stress-free way.

In an exclusive interview earlier today, he said he decided to start the platform as a result of his passion for the utilization of technology to solve human problems.

He said: “I am really passionate about how we can use technology to solve people’s requirements around searching for property.”

Nigerians commend senators for removing controversial section of bill on electronic fraud

0

FACEBOOKA cross section of Nigerians have commended the Nigerian Senate for listening to the outcries of Nigerians who spoke against the section of the proposed bill on electronic fraud which recommended a five-year jail term for anyone who speaks against the government on social media.

Sen. Gbenga Kaka (APC-Ogun) on Tuesday announced that Senators had decided to delete section 13 (3) from the proposed bill on electronic fraud because it could be abused and misinterpreted.

The section stipulates a seven-year jail for people who intentionally publish slanderous messages about government electronically.

“Anyone who intentionally propagates false information that could threaten the security of the country or capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic message shall be guilty of an offense.

“And upon conviction shall be sentenced to seven years imprisonment or N5 million fine. ”

According to him, they consulted with several stakeholders before reaching the decision.

“Following the public hearing which was held after the second reading, the section 13 (3) of the provision was taken exception to by the social media.

“And since the bill is now in the public, I decided to consult with the Senate Committee Chairman on Information, Media and Public Affairs, and that of Judiciary.

“After consultations, we resolved that section 13 (3) of the proposed bill could be abused at any point in time and could be misinterpreted.

“And as a result, I have their permission to announce to the world that that section shall be deleted.”

Many Nigerians who responded via social media this morning said the lawmakers made the right decision.

Tope Okeyanju said: “The lawmakers demonstrated that we are in a democracy where the voice of the people matters. They proposed it, we spoke against it and they hearkened to our call for its deletion.”

Dapo Awosanya said if they had gone ahead and passed the bill into law, many Nigerians would be silenced.

“Social media is currently the only place where we can say what is truly on our minds. If they take that away from us, it could lead to anarchy and social perversion,” he said.

The bill is entitled: ‘’A bill for an Act to provide for the prohibition of and punishment for electronic fraud and crime in all electronic transactions in Nigeria.’’

The bill passed through the second reading in the senate and was greeted with a lot of criticism from the social media.

We’re The Millers

1

We are the Millers

This is a comedy about a small time drug dealer who must appease a drug kingpin by bringing in a ‘smidge’ of marijuana from Mexico into the US. David (Jason Sudekis – you might know him from Saturday Night Live) plays the dad and hires a broke stripper, Rose (Jennifer Aniston), to be his wife and ‘mum’ to his 2 fake kids. He figures he won’t get stopped at the border if he rents an RV (mobile home) and hires the three dysfunctional misfits so they can all pose as a squeaky clean family on holiday.

Aniston gives a spectacular performance, who knew our beloved ‘friend’ had moves, she strips down and does a dance, to save her ‘family’ from a drug lord that they had apparently stolen from, so as to save them. We have Casey (Emma Roberts) an angry teen with a big mouth and Kenny (Will Poulter), who is just perfect for the part of virgin, sweet teenage guy.

The family as we see on screen is funny, in some ways a little disgusting, and charming. The film works well with the pairing of Sudekis and Aniston, and you may end up comparing it to Horrible Bosses, which to me is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long while. The movie is actually wonderful with characters that you grow to love, and it’s not too common for the modern comedy.

My ratings for the movie is 8 stars out of 10 reason being I watched it a second time and still laughed at the one-liners and witty remarks by the characters. It’s not a roll on the floor kind of movie but you still want to watch it a second time. I recommend the film to everyone, not only comedy lovers. Other similar movies would be: Horrible Bosses, The Heat and The Internship.

What we get from this movie is that family, be it blood relation or circumstances, will always be family and we are to stick to one another for better or worse. Who knew there are lessons to be learnt from such dumb and funny comedies?

Breaking Bad Review

breaking bad

The Chemistry is Right!

Breaking Bad is a stunning must-watch series: a show you dread and crave at once. I once called such a program ‘boringly interesting’ and indeed this series captures all the elements of suspense, thriller, comedy and drama. The show’s protagonist, Walter White (Bryan Cranston), is a high-school chemistry teacher who has a wife, a disabled teenage son, and a baby on the way. Given a diagnosis of late stage lung cancer; he teams up with a former student named Pinkman (Aaron Paul) who is now a drug dealer, to make the drug called Crystal Meth. You don’t like what Walter is doing, but at the same time you try to understand why he is doing it.

Each season, Walter has made far less justifiable choices, each one changing him, with a hint of arrogance and egotism here and there. We see how the denial and desperation that can occur to the common working class citizen, the pillar of society, that suddenly changes his moral standing in a society driven by money. We’re deep in the Scarface stage; that is the hero of the show is now its villain. To say this program has great writing is an understatement, the writers and directors have done it justice as the dialogue is brilliant, and I look for another series to compare this plot to but all that comes close to it is ‘Dexter’

The characters don’t over exaggerate their roles, just true to life screwed up events that could take place anywhere in the real world. I think they did their research on this one very well. It appeals to everyone even those who say they can’t sit down and watch a series; they’ll find themselves addicted and glued to their seats. If I was to rate this series out of 10 it would get 9.8 stars, that’s how good it is. With its season finale having aired a couple of weeks ago, I would urge those who haven’t watched it to go look for it because Breaking Bad is art, from beginning to end.

Other shows that I would recommend viewers to look out for and watch are: Homeland, House of Cards and Hostages. It’s just coincidental that they all start with the same letter but I assure you they will keep you glued to your seats if you are into thrilling action drama.

GOOGLE TRANSLATE LAUNCHES 9 MORE LANGUAGES.

0

Google Translate marks the calender as it will henceforth translate 80 languages giving users a wide platform to connect and engage among people who do not share a language.

The 9 new languages launched today have over 200 million native speakers all together from span Africa, Asia and Oceania. Africa has five languages to add to the already existing ones; Somali, Zulu, Nigeria’s; Hausa(35 million native speakers), Igbo (25million), and Yoruba (28 million).

According to Google, the more frequent a language appears on the web, the higher the chances for it to be launched. “A new language sometimes needs a little love from native speakers to get off the ground.  You can help launch your language by volunteering to help us gather and translate texts in your language.” Read a blog post.

Google has also put out a form for those interested in getting their language appear on the translate engine.

Today On The TECH-tionary

We now shift gears today from your mobile phone to the internet, or should I say ‘IT stuff’ like the ordinary person will say.

Some words that are still puzzling people include:

  • Cyber security- this are measures or technology procedures that are intended to protect computers, networks and data from unauthorized access or any other attacks that happen through the internet by cyber criminals.

Who are this cyber criminals and what is cybercrime.

  • Cyber crime- This is an illegal action that is performed through computers as well as other internet devices, e.g. hacking (trying to break a code to access sealed information). Apart from hacking other cyber crimes include identity theft, hate speeches/crimes, telemarketing and internet fraud, credit card account theft. Well, of course cyber criminals are those that perform those actions.
  • Cloud computing- This can be describe as connecting a significant number of computers through a communication network at the same time. One could say that cloud computing, also known as Cloud technology,  uses a network base provided by real server hardware which is simulated by software running on one or more devices.  This hardware are however not physically available so they can be moved around everywhere and anywhere; that’s why is called cloud.

Energy journalism Awards has been launched in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.

Organized by the ministry of Energy and Petroleum and utilities under the ministry, the award is looking to ensure that Kenyans are well informed about the industry as well as major projects planned both for accountability and support for the citizens.

The awards seek to promote accurate and comprehensive coverage of energy matters in the country. Journalists from all platforms have until end of January 2014 to submit entries which will be judged and winners announced in March.

The launch was officiated by Kenya’s Principal Secretary in the ministry, Eng. Joseph Njoroge. He noted that recent happenings in the sector had raised energy’s stakes even higher.

“With discovery of commercial oil reserves and the deliberate plans by the government to generate over 5000MW of electricity over the next forty months, the energy sector will greatly improve the economic performance of our  country”, noted the PS.  “Provision of modern energy always mirrors the economic performance of any country in the world. As Kenya takes major steps in availing more modern energy, the impact on the economy will certainly be felt. Since energy tends to be a technical subject, we must partner with the media to break it down so that we can move together as a people”.

Speaking during the launch, Acting KenGen CEO Eng. Simon Ngure said there is need for all Kenyans and energy stakeholders to keep abreast and be adequately informed on the development of energy resources in the country.

“The ambitious power plans by the government aim at giving Kenyans quality and affordable electricity and hence deserve support by all”, said Ngure.

The awards categories will focus on various energy sub themes such as energy policy and regulation, efficiency and green initiatives, petroleum, electricity and power distribution. Other categories will focus on rural electrification initiatives, energy finance and community relation stories on energy matters.

Airtel Malawi’s Operating License Renewed

airtel

Airtel Malawi’s operations will not come to a close anytime soon because the company’s application for a new operating license has been approved by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra).

MACRA said that this renewal meant that Airtel has the legal ground of being in service for the next ten years beginning next year February; but this is yet to be discussed further.

The second largest mobile operator had applied for the license this year in February, which was as per the requirements which requires an operator to apply for a renewal a year before the expiry of the existing license.

MACRA says it conducted a performance assessment on the company’s performance and compliance with its license terms and conditions during its operations from February 1999 to next year when its 15-year-long license will be expiring.

“The performance assessment conducted revealed significant contributions of Airtel Malawi to the country’s socio-economic growth, developed innovative products and services,” says the MACRA’s statement; which criticized Airtel for meeting consumer related obligations.

Saulos Chilima, Airtel Malawi’s Managing Director whose company is now expected to pay all applicable fees said that the company exists and potential customers as well as the general populace should expect more new good things from Airtel following the new license.

Before the official renewal process is done, the company and MACRA will negotiate a new set of terms and conditions that would take into account technology changes in the industry. Airtel Malawi will also have to undertake measures to meet minimum quality of service standards as well as other conditions necessary to address challenges experienced during its ending license.

Mobile networks in Egypt are facing the Public Prosecutor after being charged of Association to raise the prices of mobile services as well as restricting the marketing process under the pretext of charging the stamp tax.

The Cartel agreement cost Egyptian consumers approximately EGP500 annually which is $72 million claims the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA).

The firm further says that they had a complaint accusing the mobile networks of mutually last year in October

In October last year, the ECA says it received grievances which accused the mobile networks of collectively adding stamp tax on prepaid recharge cards at the same time earlier in the year.

The mobile network operators were previously absorbing the cost of the stamp tax to attract consumers but in March 2012 they are alleged to have privately agreed to impose the tax on the consumer without notifying the regulator in advance. The regulator later approved the tariff hikes, although it was not aware of the alleged cartel.

As part of its investigation ECA noted that it had also previously referred Mobinil and Etisalat to the Public Prosecutor due to refraining from providing the Authority with the required data and information.

Tanzanians Could Face Imprisonment Over Violation Of SIM Legislation

0

tigo tanzaniaTanzania’s SIM registration has been termed haphazard and chaotically conducted at least according to Arusha Urban MP Godbless Lema who says Electronic and Postal Communication Act (EPOCA) of 2010 is being violated.

He pointed out that the process is not in a position to put misuse of communication through mobile phones in the country in check. Joining in, Minister for Communication, science and Technology Prof Makame Mbarawa said the offence could earn individuals imprisonment and heavy fines as well.

“Registration of Sim cards is stipulated through EPOCA and any violating including registering the cards through false names will be dealt with,” said Mbarawa

The issue raised in parliament attracted audience from members of parliament who proposed extension of communication services to the rural areas in the country through Universal Communication Access Fund (UCAF).

The government has identified all areas with poor communication access and which are not attractive to investors in the sector since they are not commercially viable due to low numbers of people and rigid geographical features.

The Ministers were urged to work closely with mobile operators to see through the expansion of services to the people.

KENYA’S DIGITAL MIGRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED. A SIGH FOR KENYANS?

0

Following a court petition filed on the 26th of November by media houses; Nation Media Group, Standard Media Group and Royal Media Services against Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), the High Court has suspended the switch from analogue to digital to December 23rd.

The suspension by Justice David Majanja is to allow determination of the suit hence scrapping of Nairobi’s digital migration supposed to take effect Friday 13th 2013. The media houses accuse the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) of locking them out of the digital migration process and granting exclusive rights to local pay-TV channels to oversee the digital migration.

The ruling to be made on the 23rd will determine when the migration will take place. Justice Majanja dismissed the application seeking a three-judge bench due to lack of tangible constitutional questions.

“In my view, I can handle the petition and any party that is aggrieved can move to the appeals court as provided by the law,” ruled Justiced Majanja .

Speaking at the hearing, Paul Muite the media houses’ lawyer said Star Times is alleged to have issued  5% of their shareholding to government officials in exchange of obtaining licensing unfairly according to Nation Media Group’s CEO Linus Gitahi’s sworn statement , which was objected by the Star times lawyer saying they had followed due process.

CCK locked out two media houses- Nation Media and Royal Media in the process due to lack of 500,000 bond which Muite termed as ridiculous saying the two houses cannot lack the amount of money even in cash.

Cofek also highlighted on the wrong timing pointing out the Kenya@50 celebrations at large as well as Madiba’s  funeral requiem mass and eventual burial of the world’s icon which would deny Kenyans right to information.
