Nokia Lumia 520 Review | Beautiful But…

0

Nokia-Lumia-520For those who prefer affordable smartphones and not Android OS models, Nokia Lumia 520 is that smartphones for them. The Nokia Lumia 520 is Nokia’s fifth Windows Phone 8 handset.

The Nokia Lumia 520 has a fairly generous 4-inch, 480 x 800 display and is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and 512MB of RAM

Like all the Lumia range, 520’s beautiful windows Phone 8 tiles greet you on the 4 inch WVGA screen. The smooth cover has buttons on the side for powering up, volume  and camera. At the top the phone has a 3.5mm audio jack and a micro USB port can be seen at the bottom of the device.

On the back is 5MP camera near the top, the materials great and nice to touch. The phone has no flashlight or front facing camera and no FM radio.

The phone’s camera can capture video in up to 720p though the lens is not of the Carl Zeiss as compared to higher end Lumia devices.

Nokia-Lumia-520-front The phone has a Super Sensitive Touch technology just like Lumia 920 and 820 handsets and users in cold weather you can use your gloves on the touch screen.

The camera is good for daylight use both indoors and outdoors but as it get darker it becomes harder to take clearer photos as the phone has no flash.

OS

Running on Windows Phone 8, the pre-arranged touch sensitive live tiles show the homescreen, swiping takes one to the app menu. During the period I used the phone, it never hang on me. I only hated having to have a Microsoft account to dig deeper into the apps and though its a small thing, many users find it manipulative.

Away with the OS, Nokia’s HERE Maps family is great and more accurate than some of the present mapping services in the industry. Having a team on ground doing the mapping pays. HERE Drive and HERE city lens are great for having the whole city in at your fingertips and your car trip turns out to be fun letting them do the ‘thinking’.

Performance

Windows Phone 8 is a well optimized mobile operating systems and also light but the phones  512MB of RAM limits its performance especially for games. However, you can most games with it, depending on the remaining storage you have.

Battery Life

general-screen-start-screen-largeOn call time the 1430 mAh battery could run for ten hours maximum use, that’s a whole day of work. On 3G, the battery lasts slightly over 6.5. For best results, users need to carry an extra battery just in case it goes off at 4 or 5PM just before you leave office and want to meet friends for an evening chat.

Connectivity & Call Quality

The phones vibration is not so great, to avoid missing your calls you need to put both ringer tunes and vibration on, actually the 520 sucks on sound and call quality. I missed a number of calls and had to call back with excuses. Its speakers didn’t work so well for me. I hate straining to hear someone from the other end, so at times I preferred text, whenever sound was low-this happens when you are in a busy and loud area, like on the road on a busy street.

It’s signal strength was fine. It connects to WiFi so well and also allows Bluetooth file sharing.

The Lumia 520 is affordable at around. It is a clutter free smartphone with an ecosystem with less apps, only essential ones.

Pros

•             Decent camera for a phone

•             Fairly fast when sane

•             Its durable

•            Affordable

•             Large, wide screen

Cons

•             No front-facing camera

•             Average battery life

•             512MB RAM

•             No NFC

•              Beats the Huawei Ascend W1, the Huawei Ascend G330 and the Orange San Diego.

That means a decent saving for those who don’t mind committing to a network. It’s a little cheaper than the Huawei Ascend W1 too.

at a fairly sleek 9.9mm and 124g. At 119.9 x 64mm it is longer

The front of the Nokia Lumia 520 is mostly screen as you’d expect and at 4-inches it’s a decent size for a low-price handset. The pixel density of 233 pixels per inch also isn’t bad at all for the money you’re paying – sure it’s dwarfed by the likes of the 469 ppi HTC One, but it’s also many times cheaper.

Unlike some handsets, the screen here isn’t edge-to-edge: there’s a black border running the entire way around it. At the sides this border is fairly narrow, but it becomes quite wide at the top to make room for the earpiece and a Nokia logo. It’s even wider at the bottom, because that’s where you’ll find the start, back and search softkeys.

The back of the handset is almost featureless, with just a small Nokia logo in the centre, the 5-megapixel camera lens near the top and a tiny loudspeaker near the bottom.  The left edge is devoid of any features, ports or buttons at all.

The top is home only to a 3.5mm headphone port on the left hand side. The bottom edge has a micro USB port in the centre, which is used for charging or connecting the Nokia Lumia 520 to a computer.

The back cover is easy to remove – you simply use your nails to peel it away at each corner. The cover itself feels reasonably sturdy, so we don’t see it snapping even if you take it on and off a lot.

store-concept-hub-appsOnce that has been removed, you’ll have access to the 1430 mAh battery (which interestingly is bigger than the 1300 mAh battery found in the Nokia Lumia 620).

Underneath the battery there are two slots – one for a micro SIM card and one for a microSD card. The Nokia Lumia 520 supports up to 64GB cards, which comes in very handy for bulking up the storage from the fairly limiting 8GB of onboard memory.

Key Features

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon™ S4, Dual-core 1 GHz

RAM: 512 MB

Mass memory: 8 GB  Expandable MicroSD  up to 64 GB and free cloud storage of 7 GB

Camera: 5 MP but not  Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and has no flash
Screen size: 4”
Dimensions: 119.9 mm by 64 mm by 2: 9.9 mm
Weight: 124 g

CEO Weekends: CCK Has Kenyan Analogue TV Owners Panicking As They Publicize The ‘Switch Off’

0

migration

The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has launched a consumer awareness campaign to sensitize the public on the planned switch off of the analogue TV broadcasting in Nairobi and the surrounding areas on December 13.
The first phase is set to take place in the Central Business District through its suburbs and outlaying satellite areas of Kiambu, Ngong, Ongata Rongai, Kitengela, Isinya, Kajiado, Athi River, parts of Machakos, Thika and Githunguri.
So, Kenyans who have not well ‘armed’ their analogue TV sets with compliant set top boxes or have purchased a smart TV will have thire TV’s blank on December 13.
This does not mean that the rest of the country will not have a taste of the migrations as Mombasa, Malindi, Nyeri, Meru, Kisumu, Webuye, Kisii, Nakuru and Eldoret will have their share of the migration on March 30 next year.  The rest of the country will be switched off on 30th June 2014 thus completing the transition from analogue to digital TV broadcasting.

The media campaign will be rolled out on the print, digital, electronic and outdoor media and is aimed at educating consumers on what they need to do to migrate to digital TV broadcasting.

Lined up, too, are radio activations, talk shows and interviews, billboards and demonstration clinics to be held in select urban centres within metropolitan Nairobi.

The transition to digital TV broadcasting is aimed at ensuring that Kenya complies with international agreements on the digital migration arrived at during the Regional Radiocommunications Conference in 2006.

Dr Fred Matiang’i described Nairobi analogue switch off date of 13th December 2013 as ‘the test bed for migration’ saying that the lessons learnt here will be applied in the analogue. He appealed to the close to 700,000 households who require to be connected to DVB-T2 set top boxes in the area to purchase the gadgets ahead of the switch-off deadline.

Saying there are almost 300,000 set top boxes in stock, the Cabinet Secretary urged investors to ensure they offer affordable gadget in the market.

Forget Nyumba Kumi, Ramp.co.ke Helps You Know Your Neighbors

1

knwRAMP, a startup presenting today at DEMO might be the needed solution the Kenyan government has been looking for.

Instead of introducing Manyumba Kumi, a Know Your Neighbor socialist style in Kenya, RAMP suggests the government take it on to solve the problem of insecurity by using its web app which registers residents and neighborhood associations in both Kenya and Nigeria.

Speaking to TechMoran at DEMO, Babatunde Mo’ Aguda,  lead Developer & Founder of WebRelated Consulting firm behind RAMP said, ” We wanted to fill an existing vaccum we observed in this niche. our aim is to help resident associations automate their members and basic processes instead of using manual records.”

RAMP, meaning Residents Association Management Portal, aims to simplify the management of  neigbourhoods using technology in a move to improve security and accountability among community members  among themselves.

Though RAMP was developed in Nigeria, the two country’s suffer the same urban problems. Lagos has over 20 million residents while Nairobi has over 4 million. Both the cities have issues with insecurity and police will never be enough to man every small movement. Resident associations therefore come in to help residents know each other and manage their own activities.

The Kenyan government recently suggested it will adopt Manyumba Kumi, in a move to help people know each other, for security purposes. Manyumba Kumi may even integrated with the countries credit reference bureau to know people’s details, keep laa and order in the country.

RAMP may monetize by asking for the associations to subscribe or simply pay user licenses. They can also sell the data to property dealers and the government.

According to Babatunde, RAMP works simply, one requires an Internet connected PC or Mobile device, then they can send Bulk SMS Alerts, Email Newsletters, search for members in the members database, check records of levies and dues among other things. Users can also easily communicate with all members of a residents association via both SMS Alerts & Email Newsletters.

0

Mandela

Good news is in the South African air; Maledi Pandor  the South African Minister of Home Affairs and Pravin Gorghan the Minister of Finance are yet to decide on whether to waive the fee for new smart ID cards.

As [Pandor] has indicated in Parliament, she is in discussion with National Treasury regarding fees for certain categories of persons that may be exempted,” said spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa.

The Home Affairs Minister had the legal authority to waive fees for acquisition of enabling documents for “certain categories of persons”, if she deemed it necessary.

“In this regard, we would await the outcome of discussions between minister Pandor and minister Pravin Gordhan on the matter, which will chart the way forward and give direction on the matter,” he said.

DA spokesman Manny de Freitas said R140 was the difference between survival and starvation for many South Africans as many of them cannot afford it.

“Imposing a new ID system on South Africa’s citizens and then forcing them to pay for it puts a price on citizenship that not everyone can afford, and will exclude them from the employment market as well as electoral and social security processes once green barcoded ID books are phased out,” said Mamoepa.

The process is expected to take more than a year as they will call people to register according to their dates of birth. Citizens who will be receiving their ID’d for the first time will not pay.

One of the first people to receive the new ID card was former president Nelson Mandela, who received his on his birthday, on July 18.

South Africa’s Business Day Television (BDTV) and CNBC Africa are out to answer to plagiarism allegations after the former broadcaster, formerly known as Summit TV, accused its competitor of copying messages posted on Twitter during Wednesday’s midterm budget speech by finance minister Pravin Gordhan.

BDTV CEO Vernon Matzopolous has accused CNBC of stealing the content his company posted to Twitter. CNBC Africa head of programming Bronwyn Nielsen has admitted the copying took place and apologised for what she has called an “error in judgment” by a junior intern.

“Why bother to employ your own journalists when you can just steal the content from your rivals?” Wrote Matzopolous in a statement, in which he attached images showing CNBC Africa posting identical tweets to those issued on BDTV’s Twitter feed. “As far as I know, publishing someone’s content as your own is plagiarism. Or does the Twittersphere have a different set of rules?”

In response, Nielsen explains that CNBC Africa has a team of people managing the channel’s social media accounts.

“One of the members was a junior intern who made an error in judgment during the midterm budget by copying and pasting three Business Day Television tweets,” she said. “The channel does not condone plagiarism and extends an apology to BDTV. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against the staff member in question.”

The person responsible for the channel’s tweets failed to remove “@BusinessDayTV” from one of the tweets then produced a direct copy after retweeting the original.

‘34% Of People Do Not Have Their Devices Protected At Wi-Fi Hotspots’ Says Kaspersky

0

kaspersky-security-box

How many times have you bothered to take any precautions when using Wi-Fi in public places? A Kaspersky Consumer Security Risk survey done by  B2B International and Kaspersky Lab  this year says that that free connection harbors hidden risks but apparently more than a third of the users do not take any additional precautions when logging on to public Wi-Fi.

Getting online is quite easy this days but many of this hotspots are not keen on the protection bit for the users, which even the users are either not concern or do not know the potential problems that can be caused.

In the Survey, 34 percent of users said they took no special measures to protect online activity using a hotspot, while 14 percent were happy to bank or shop online using any network that came to hand and only 13 percent take the time to check the encryption standard of any given access point.

In a Wi-Fi access point, it is possible for one to see what you are doing on your devices as it is a window to the internet for all the devices that are connected to it. Every request from a device goes through an access point, and only then reaches the sites that users want to visit.

Having no encryption of communications between users and the access point makes it ease for a cybercriminal to obstract all the data a user enters, including data sent to a bank, or an online store. This doesn’t mean that a connection with a password will make things better, Kaspersky says that cyber crimes happen to such connections as well as one with a secure https-connection between the required site and the user’s browser.

Kaspersky Lab proposes the use of secure connections to access points. They say that only this will greatly reduce the risk of the traffic being intercepted by cybercriminals. However, when users are planning to use sites which demand personal information such as usernames and passwords, this basic precaution must be joined with additional protective tools.

Free things indeed come with a price well at least to the care-free in this case. How many times have you done major transactions in a Wi-Fi area? Coming back to Kenya, is the Wi-Fi system in the matatu (public transport system) as well as the hotels secure enough to conduct business transactions?

Nigeria and the king of search engines,Google, have come together and formed the new Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI). This is a global organisation aiming to take affordable broadband access to everyone.

In the past month, the search engine giant announced that it had joined more that 30 members of A4AI, while Nigeria became the first African country to formally join the alliance.

In the 49 least developed countries, 90 percent of people are still not online, so A4I’s main aim is to challenge regulatory barriers and put in place initiatives to bring down the cost of access to the UN Broadband Commission target of entry-level broadband services priced at less than 5 percent of average monthly income.

Korean Initiative Plans To Build Tech Training Centre In Libya

0

Libya is in for a treat as the TriHuman Resources Development Service of Korea will for the first time recruit industrial trainees and train them in technology in the drive to fuel economic development in Libya.

The HRD Korea signed a contract worth US$94.8 million on 21 October 2013 with the Libyan Ministry of Labout and the WAC from the office of Libya’s Prime Minister.

The new initiative comes at a time when Libya is two years later on still recovering from the late Gaddafi’s over 40 years dictatorship rule. Nevertheless, through this contract, the Korean organization would provide six months of technical training in 14 fields including automobiles, electricity, mechanics, welding, electronics and plumbing to more than 1,300 new trainees selected and sent to Korea by the Libyan Ministry of Labour, notes Korean business portal “Business Korea”.

The organization would also receive US$13.6 million from Libya to build a vocational education and training centre for 900 people in Benghazi Libya. Apart from erecting a replica of the Korean training centre, HRD Korea would be in charge of placing orders and managing the construction as well as delivering the necessary expertise for the initial operation of the centre, reports say.

BlackBerry Messaging On Samsung Phones

BBM

Call it temporary adoption, Samsung is making the mobile social network BlackBerry Messaging (BBM) available on Samsung smartphone users in Sub-Saharan Africa. However this is a limited offer as it runs until 20h00 on 24th October this year.

“The anticipation is high. We are delighted that we are able to offer our loyal customers an advantage to download BBM. We are confident users will enjoy the Samsung experience to which they have become accustomed to,” said George Ferreira, VP and COO of Samsung Electronics Africa.

The chat service will form part of Samsung’s Messaging Hub as a complementary addition to the  other messaging services that Samsung customers already enjoy, including Whatsapp, WeChat and Samsung’s propriety messaging service ChatON.

BBM offers Samsung GALAXY smartphone users an extensive range of features, including BBM chat (one-to-one or multi-person chat), BBM Groups that let customers invite up to 30 friends to chat together, as well as the ability to share photos and voice notes.

“We are excited to work with Samsung to launch BBM to their customers in sub-Saharan Africa,” said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President for BBM at BlackBerry. “Samsung customers will discover what makes BBM so popular – they’ll enjoy a fast, reliable and engaging mobile messaging experience.”

BBM is now available for Samsung GALAXY Android smartphones for free from the Samsung App Store. Due to the high demand and volume, certain measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth roll-out across the Sub-Saharan African continent:

So does one install;  go to BBM.com in the Samsung App store then download it,open the App once it is installed and enter an active email address in order to place the user in a queuing system. Finally,a notification will be sent through the email submitted and the user can now sign in.

A 24hr offer from one brand to another, questions would be roaming in anyone’s mind. Doesn’t WhatsApp do the same thing? Why would someone download an App they would use for 24hrs? Or could it be that Blackberry has some issues that Samsung is helping them solve? Well as long as the consumer is enjoying much of this speculation doesn’t matter.

Malawi Rolls Out New ICT Bill

0

Acknowledging that the development the IT society has registered considerable progress in the ICT sector, Malawi has drafted its new information and communications Technology Bill set to completely overhaul its approach to the new technology phenomenon.

The Bill entitled “Electronic Transactions and Management Bill 2013” that was rolled out in the beginning of October 2013 covers 11 issues set help control operations in Malawi’s ICT sector.

The launch comes at a time when Africa is the region with the highest growth rates in ICT compliancy over the past three years with mobile broadband penetration increasing from 2 per cent in 2010 to 11 per cent in 2013. The most significant steps of these changes are networks digitalization, components miniaturization and more recently the development of the Internet and mobile telephones, notes the bill set to offer guidelines in light of the drastic growth. ICT has thus created new legal issues which require specific legal answers which has brought about the need to roll out the new information and communications technology bill.

The main objective of the Government is to have the country benefit from a true technological leap which may speed up its economic growth by enabling the development of new economic activities due to the implementation of a secure legal framework regulating the use of ICT, reports say. Through this bill, Malawi is convinced that its agro-based economy can drastically grow and diversify through participation in the information society and that in order to fully benefit from the information revolution. Thus, plans are underway for Malawi to modernize various sectors of its economy using ICT.

The new bill tackles issues such as the Legal recognition of electronic messages; proceedings applicable to the conclusion of electronic contracts; legal responsibility of various actors; consumer protection with respect to e-commerce; taxation; online financial services; and encryption. The Bill also covers the issues of Cyber criminality; Data protection; Domain name; and E-Government.

According to reports, the bill does not recognize the ‘Legal recognition of electronic messages’ in the current legal framework in Malawi, yet it is a condition to the development of electronic transactions in the country.  However, it says that the electronic documents should have the same legal probative force as paper documents.

The ‘Domain name’ which has been a challenge in the ICT sector in Malawi has also been dealt with in the Bill and sets out rules in accordance with international principles saying the management of the registration of domain names is essential to the development of the e-economy.

The bill also observes the rules regulating the conclusion of contracts need to be specified and clarified in order to ensure security with respect to electronic transactions under the ‘Proceedings applicable to the conclusion of electronic contracts’ section.

While in respect to the internet, under the “Legal responsibility of various actors’” section regarding TV, radio or written press, the freedom of speech is expected to be limited by certain principles of public order. It also precisely defines the responsibility of technical service providers and editors of online contents.

Online purchase of goods and services would is covered by the bill under the section ‘Consumer protection with respect to e-commerce”. It tackles online purchase of services or goods which it says require the adoption of specific provisions in addition to classical consumer rules. Moreover, it provides for specific obligations lying on professionals regarding the display of information and online advertising.

Taxation is also covered in the bill, as it explains in detail the circumstances under which value added tax and customs fees can apply to e-transactions.

Under ‘Online financial services’ the Bill gives the importance and the specificity of the risks of these services which it says have driven the Government to introduce very strict provisions regulating the online provision of financial and banking services.

The Bill also looks at ‘Encryption’ where specific provisions have been laid down to ensure the security of digital economy. Generally, the Bill provides for the legal framework regulating encryption in conformity with international best practices.

Last but not least, it deals with the issue of ‘Cyber criminality’ where it sets out the principles for combating crimes in the e-environment and establishes a dedicated institution, the Malawi in full first and abbreviate Computer Emergency Response Team to fight against cyber threats and attacks.

The Bill also offers ‘Data protection’ topped with specific provisions in order to regulate online collection of personal information regarding users and imposing systematic information on the purposes of the data processing and the rights of the data subject, say reports.

E-Government has been included after being excluded in the country’s first Bill of this kind called the E-Bill.  The Bill reiterates the obligation for administrators to do their best efforts to promote the development of online public services and facilitate the use of ICT in Malawi.

The Supercomputer Will Be Hosted In South Africa

0

SKA_artist_impression_400

Chances of South Africa being the holder of the next record-breaking  supercomputer are extremely high. The supercomputer has Exabyte capacity and compute power in the Exaflops (floating point instructions per second) range.

Dr Happy Sithole, from the Centre for High Performance Computing (HPC), said that the new and powerful supercomputer will be necessary to process the huge volumes of complex data produced by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope project.

“The centre currently runs a supercomputer that runs at 61,4Teraflops. Although it is in the world’s top 500 supercomputers, it is rapidly falling behind the global curve. And this computer is currently running at 93 percent capacity,” Dr Sithole says. “The world’s next biggest supercomputer will be in South Africa, and it will have Exascale capability.”

This gadget is not news to the country, as it uses the computer for big science projects like anaysing climate change, mineral beneficiation, bio-informatics and has designed both the new SKA dish and participated in 3D animated movies.

Other that the centre has participated in large-scale science projects like CERN, and performed 500 jobs a day for ALICE experiment that was responsible for discovering the Higgs Boson.

The telescopes, in the computer are being designed to have 100-times more sensitivity adding an enormous amount of data that needs to be processes and analysed.

The Doctor said that scientists will be able to study the evolution of galaxies through this sensitive radio telescopes.

“Because of the large scale dishes, there is a large amount of information coming in very fast, which needs fast data processing, which can’t be done with the computing we have today,” Said  Sithole, quoting the main problem they could face.

SKA 1 anticipates data requirements of 100 Petaflops and up, increasing with SKA 2 to Exabytes of data requiring Exaflops of processing power.

“I see this as an opportunity for South Africa,” Dr Sithole says. “It is a challenge that is not just for the IT industry but for academia and government as well – in fact, for all of us.”

The Samsung Gear Is Now Compatible With 8 More Samsung Phones

galaxy gear

Samsung has made it public that the Galaxy Gear will now be compatible with 8 more Samsung galaxy devices, before the Gear was only compatible with the Note 3.

The electronic company said that the compatibility has been increased to the Galaxy S4,, S III, and Note II via an Android 4.3.

The Gear will also be work with the Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3, and S4 zoom but it will be through a different software update beginning by the end of this month.

“Extending Galaxy Gear compatibility to more Galaxy devices reflects our deep commitment to continuing to deliver enriched mobile experiences to our consumers,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile division, Samsung Electronics.“Through a significant effort to enhance and enrich the Galaxy experience, Samsung continues to empower our users in their mobile lives and enable smart freedom with Galaxy Gear.”

Galaxy Gear will enable Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II users to make and answer calls and view incoming messages and notifications through the watch display instead of the smartphone screen.

Good move, but Samsung should borrow a leaf from the Sony Smart Watch2, extend the compatibility to all smartphones with Android 4.0 and later. It would  get more customers considering it has more features than the Sony Smart Watch

Like Rapture, There will be Gnashing of Teeth at DEMO Africa 2013

0

weeping-and-gnashing-of-teethDEMO is here in just a few hours, and we are happy, but thousands will leave this conference disappointed and ready to close shop.

The conference now in its second year running brings together best startup entrepreneurs from across the continent, to come and launch their startups before a group of investors and media.

However, it might not be as rosy as it appears.

There are 40 ventures competing for just five slots and begging for the attention of a few investors, many of them already skeptical of their businesses. As a founder, one is likely to get frustrated if they don’t end up among the lucky five, I would cry too if I didn’t.

Prepping all night for months, foregoing family, missing sleep and pausing Breaking Bad and avoiding partying friends for months is a recipe to suicide if an entrepreneur goes back home with just a handful business cards instead of a series A. They have debts to pay, for technology, office and the money they raise from family. Some of them end up hating such conferences thinking they are a fraud. Worse, some will take angel investors and VCs personal if they ignore to pass by their stands or attend their pitch sessions.

Talking to Mbwana Alliy of Savannah Fund recently, I realize why such situations are highly expected to happen.

Diligent homework

“Investors who come here are not amateurs, though some of them might be. However, every good investor should have done their homework months before DEMO, to find out more about a startup before the event,” he said. “But I believe most of the investors who will be here know these companies and they should have invested already if they were impressive. We have all been invited but no one can decide for others where to invest.”

Great to reconnect

According to Alliy, such conferences are great for meet and greet. “They keep the conversations going and connections active and founders can use them to get feedback from investors. It’s like oiling a relationship.”

Founders discuss with investors what is working for them since they last met, building their relationship.

Among the 40 finalists, DEMO funding will go to the top five whose traction, team and scalability would be proven. Like any other business, VC’s and investors put money into business for profit. Working hard just to make it to DEMO is not a guarantee of a billion-dollar investment. Investors want to see in the team a future, with or without funding. This doesn’t mean DEMO is not helpful. Just sneak preview of what last year’s class has achieved, two finalists have raised several surrounds of funding, some of them in millions.

Press is guaranteed but you didn’t gym that hard just to get mentioned on someone’s blog.

This cheat sheet will get you this seed round and more.

The ultimate cheat sheet

It’s never late to win.

“Some teams are so good at pitching, yet have a crappy product,” said Mbwana. “And there are others who have a great product but are poor at pitching, may be due to lack of exposure. “

Product and presentation

Please, be none of the above, having a crappy product will kill you and being so poor at pitching will kill you quick. If you can hire a coach to train you overnight on doing great pitches, do it. If it’s about your product, get the best developer or designer on deadline even if it’s from O-desk.

“Suppose you don’t secure funding? Will you close shop?  Yes you need the funding. But show the investors what you need the funding for, and show them had it not been for that expansion or etc show them (don’t tell) you can run without their money but if it comes, it will be jet fuel you need to accelerate. Having a passionate goal and a dedicated team helps, but the product has to be awesome first-either it meets the needs of an enterprise or a particular consumer need.

Do not run behind your time

Apart from a dedicated team, the timing of the business should be considered. M-Pesa could not be conceived without mobile phones. Being future minded pays but do not be ahead or behind your time. It would be cumbersome building payphones when everyone is buying their second and third mobile device.

Cost

Affordability should give your idea a great leap forward. Affordability of the product’s equipment and technology by the company and affordability of the end product by the buyer, if you can’t afford the technology to build your gadget, or the parts aren’t available, then you are in trouble. Not being cheap but affordable is what everyone wants. Depends on your target market. If you are building for poor folks or for masses, cost is key. For those building for rural population’s simplicity and battery power is key.

Durability

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg had a culture at Facebook that allowed guys to experiment without fear. Moving fast and breaking things is great, but not behind the podium as you DEMO your app. The last time your app or code or whatever should break is in-house before you come out to the public. And if you are manufacturing glass which can’t withstand a drop of water then shouldn’t be doing so.

Customers and the bandwagon effect

Do you have customers? Having an app or startup business without customers before you launch is grave. You should have pre-orders just like Samsung and Apple does. Yes, everyone is doing so on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Kenyans own BRCK had pre-orders before production began. Customers validate your idea in that week one. They show an existing problem that’s why they buy and they will complain if it crashes and might never come back. Remember-one domino goes, all dominoes go, they move in groups. Clients build a community around your business, they create a social proof, no one acts as an isolated individual, the negative results of such group theory is mob justice-united in anger.

Launch is the start not exit

“If I don’t invest in anyone at DEMO, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of them. Founders should value great feedback from VC’s and the public and go back to implement it. It will also be great opportunity to connect. I may not have met everyone, especially those from Egypt and this might be the best time to connect and probably spark interest. Investing is like dating, you have to invest time into it till marriage, that’s why we do due diligence, not just impulse investing,” Alliy concluded.

So have fun, DEMO is time to mingle with VC’s and other entrepreneurs. Court the media too; especially those who will make you sweat. Talk to customers, bloggers and VC’s who say your idea is crappy, listen, and go back to the garage for fine tuning.

However, failing to secure funding at DEMO shouldn’t be a reason for a startup to close shop, go back to the never lying bootstrapping.
