Worldcoin slapped with a one-year ban

0

Sam Altman-owned Worldcoin is facing a one-year suspension of its operations in Kenya, as recommended by a multi-agency team.

The suspension comes in response to concerns over data collection practices by Tools for Humanity, a software and hardware development company that develops tools to support the Worldcoin protocol.

Data Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait declared that the freeze on data collection from Kenyans will persist until specific conditions are met.

Ms Kassait outlined the conditions for Worldcoin to resume operations in Kenya, including undergoing a security audit, granting government access to data, registering with the Business Registration Services, and establishing a local representative.

“Additionally, the company must Conduct a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) and improve transparency in data storage and consent processes,” the Data Commissioner stated.

As part of the recommendations, the licenses of related companies have been revoked and Worldcoin operators are urged to seek approval from the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) for testing their products, solutions, and services before launching them in the Kenyan market.

This investigation involved collaboration between the Office of Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy; and the National Computer and Cybercrime Coordination Committee (NC4).

To further impact Worldcoin, all WorldApps in the Kenyan region are to be removed from App stores for one year until the company’s approval is secured.

Kenya is a significant global market for cryptocurrency, with Worldcoin reporting over 600,000 registered users out of a total of 2.2 million worldwide.

The task force has also empowered the ODPC to impose administrative fines on companies engaged in data collection activities that pose threats to national security and the economy.

Additionally, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is tasked with monitoring identified companies for income tax compliance related to cryptocurrency income under the Finance Act, of 2023.

Furthermore, the Attorney General, CMA and CBK are responsible for spearheading the regulation of digital assets and cryptocurrency.

The recommendations were formulated based on findings that the consent obtained from Kenyan citizens was insufficient and did not align with the provisions of the Data Protection Act, with data collection purposes ranging from World ID provision to machine learning model development and testing.

Recently, Worldcoin refuted claims that it is primarily a data collection entity.

Worldcoin’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Alex Blania, clarified to the National Assembly Ad Hoc Committee that their core mission is not data mining or data selling, but rather authentication of human identity and unique categorization.

Mr. Blania faced numerous questions from the committee and emphasized that Worldcoin is not licensed to operate in Kenya due to uncertainties regarding data control regulations.

He assured the committee that they aim to enhance privacy and protect user data, rather than harvesting it.

Furthermore, Blania addressed allegations of coercing Kenyans to undergo iris scanning by offering them a token payment of Sh7,500.

Worldcoin defended this payment, characterizing it as a standard incentive similar to what other companies like PayPal might provide.

Also recently, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakumicha voiced concerns about potential complications arising from the World Coin scanners.

She suggested that those who underwent the eye-scanning procedure should promptly seek medical attention due to potential risks.

Additionally, the Health CS stated that the government is dedicated to monitoring the health of individuals who have registered for this process.

Worldcoin, introduced on July 24, offered individuals the opportunity to receive free money in exchange for having their eyes scanned using a device known as Orb.

This scan captures distinct biometric identifiers. The founder, Sam Altman, asserts that Worldcoin’s objective is to establish a digital World ID that distinguishes humans from artificial intelligence.

Kenya Power Unveils Plan to Accelerate Electric Cooking

0

Kenya Power is actively promoting the adoption of of electric cooking (e-cooking) among its 9.2 million customers with a target to increase uptake from approximately 90,000 current users to over 500,000 users in the next three years.
This was disclosed by the Company’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, during the launch of the Global eCooking Coalition (GeCCo) during the Africa Climate Week in Nairobi.

“Electricity has traditionally been viewed as the expensive cooking alternative by many Kenyans. Middle-class households often own task-specific electric cooking appliances such as kettles or microwaves but rely on liquefied petroleum gas for the bulk of their cooking. However, this is no longer the case as recent studies have shown. There is, therefore, an
enormous untapped potential for e-cooking in the country,” said Dr. (Eng.) Siror.

Recent data indicate that only 1% of electricity customers use the service to cook, with the majority of Kenyans primarily relying on wood fuel and gas. GeCCo is an initiative aimed at accelerating the transition from traditional cooking methods to e-cooking, both domestically and commercially. The coalition consists of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and Energising Development (EnDev)
among others.

“Kenya Power will work with partners to drive the uptake of e-cooking across the country. The utility has partnered with several other organisations including the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), and the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya (CCAK) to champion e-cooking in Makueni, Kitui, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Kisumu counties,” added Dr. (Eng.) Siror.

Through its Pika na Power public awareness campaign, Kenya Power aims to raise awareness of e-cooking for increased uptake by its customers. The Company has set up demonstration centres in Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Mombasa to advance the e-cooking agenda nationally.

KRA has made it easier for people to manage their financial commitments by streamlining the process of updating fines.

For a variety of tax infractions, KRA issues fines that, if not resolved promptly, could result in further expenses. For instance, if you don’t submit your Pay As You Earn (PAYE) taxes by the deadline, you may be subject to a fine of 25% of the unpaid tax or Ksh. 10,000, whichever is greater. Other infractions have other punishments, such as late filing of returns or late payment of certain taxes.

How to turn a private number on or off on the Safaricom network

0

Have you ever considered hiding up your caller ID so that the person receiving your call wouldn’t know who it was? On the Safaricom network, there is actually a very straightforward USSD-based method to accomplish this. The USSD option provides a sufficient approach for individuals who would rather not tinker with their device’s settings because the capability is virtually always present on all handsets but occasionally concealed within the phone’s settings.

How to turn off caller ID for a particular contact

Follow the procedures below to hide your identify from particular contacts;

  • On your Safaricom phone’s dial pad, dial #31# followed by the phone number you intent to call without revealing your identity
  • An example to hide you caller ID from 0722000000 would be #31#0722000000
  • Then initiate the call

How to turn off caller identification on all incoming calls

As opposed to the aforementioned example, you’ll be concealing your caller ID on all incoming calls.

On your phone’s dial pad, just key in *31# You should receive a subsequent notification that caller ID option has been enabled on your phone

How to deactivate private number on your phone

The procedure is a little bit more complex and calls for users to visit their caller settings if they had activated the “hide caller ID” function but no longer wanted to utilize it. Using an Android phone, take the actions listed below:

  • Open the dialer app on your phone, then tap the three dots to access settings.
  • Then select “GSM Call Settings” from the “Calls” menu.
  • Select “Additional settings” from the GSM settings menu.
  • “Caller ID” should appear at that point.
  • Network Default, hide number, or show number are the options available.
  • Depending on the Android version of your phone, the settings may change.

How to Determine If Your Phone Has Been Tapped.

0

Your cell phone may have been tapped.

Some indicators that your cell phone has been tapped include:

  • Unusual Call Sounds

Your calls may be being recorded if you hear a high-pitched hum, pulsating static, clicking, or beeping. Call-forwarding may have been configured without your consent, or the device may include malware that records phone calls. A weak signal may need to be fixed if you occasionally hear strange noises, but if it occurs frequently, examine your phone.

  • Your phone overheats and your battery drains

Does the battery on your phone suddenly drop and it heats for no apparent reason? This may occur if you spend a lot of time playing video games or streaming videos. However, if it’s taking place when your smartphone ought to be idle, it might be malicious software that’s constantly sending information back to whoever is tracking your phone. Check your phone’s settings to determine which applications are consuming the most battery life.

  • Websites don’t seem as they should.

Some malware can enter your browser by presenting you with a false web page that appears legitimate and then capturing your login information when you submit it. This type of phishing fraud is widespread because social engineering techniques are effective. Close the page if the website you’re visiting behaves oddly or appears different from how it did before.

  • You Can’t Turn Off Your Phone

Your phone may be being tapped if it is having problems shutting down. Check to verify whether the backlight remains on even after the phone is turned off or if shutdown efforts are unsuccessful before completely turning off your phone. Another indication of danger is a random shutdown or reboot.

  • Strange Text Messages

Text messages that are mostly gibberish or have suspicious links may indicate that spyware was improperly installed on your device. The program is trying to send instructions to your apps and instead are coming through as SMS messages.

  • Hijacked Cameras and Microphones

Keep an eye out for erratic camera or microphone activation. Your phone may have been compromised if the camera light comes on even though you haven’t opened a camera-related app. Always look further since certain bad software enables hackers to access your camera even when the light is not on.

  • High Data Use That Is Inexplicable

Spyware and malware can consume a significant amount of data on your device since they frequently send information back to the hacker. If you don’t have an unlimited data plan, exceeding your typical data usage may incur extra charges. At the end of the billing cycle, check your phone statement to see whether prices have increased suddenly.

On an iPhone, navigate to Settings > Cellular to view your data consumption. The same choices are available in the Network & Internet or Connections settings for Android users. Additionally, you can program your phone to alert you if your data usage exceeds a predetermined limit.

Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle production underway

0

Tech giants are rushing to claim a piece of the electric vehicle (EV) pie, and Xiaomi wants to be among the first with their own vehicle.

The company has announced the trial manufacturing of its first EV, a process that has been going on for over a month. Xiaomi revealed that they have been producing approximately 50 cars every week, delivering all prototypes required for road tests as well as ironing out all manufacturing glitches.

Xiaomi’s EVs are almost ready to go on sale, thanks to a recent green light from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The remaining obstacle is approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Following that, it will be up to Xiaomi to scale up production and determine when to debut its vehicles.

The company has invested about €178 million in their EV business in the second quarter of this year alone, and they have set aside a total of €9 billion for the new automotive division’s first ten years.

So far, their prototype is said to have completed its summer and winter testing. Xiaomi’s president, Lu Weibing, stated that they intend to mass-produce its first EV model by the first half of 2024.

Ford unveils the Mustang Mach-E Rally, a sporty off-road electric SUV

0

Ford just announced the Mustang Mach-E Rally effectively taking the electric car technology off road. The company is aiming to build up on the success of the standard Mustang Mach E SUV.

The Shelby-esque racing stripes on the hood and a glossy black-painted steel top are standard on the Mach-E Rally. Upper and lower body moldings, a rear spoiler, front and rear motor shields, a front splitter, and rally-inspired fog lights are all available. If you get stuck in the mud, there’s a handy front-end recovery point with a hook.

Ford is aiming for 480 horsepower and a whopping 881 Nm of torque. The Rally is 20mm taller than the GT, with carefully adjusted springs, and MagneRide shocks. It has 385mm front brake rotors and red Brembo brake calipers.

The Mach-E Rally has an estimated range of 402 km and is powered by a 91kWh battery. On a DC fast charger, charging from 10% to 80% takes only 36 minutes.

The SUV includes a new “RallySport Drive Mode” which brings more aggressive damping on those unpredictable terrains. There are also new tires that are specifically built to handle sloppy roads, including snowy terrains.

Despite the off-road vibe of the Mach-E Rally, the cabin is high-tech, including Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system and other functions such as Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning. The inside is similar to previous Mach-E variations, except the inclusion of performance seats.

In the United States, Ford suggests a starting MSRP of around €60,600. Exact details will be revealed closer to the release date, which is set for early 2024.

Toyota reveals new Hilux running on hydrogen fuel cell electric technology

0

In a joint project between Toyota, consortium partners and the UK government funding, the first Hilux Hydrogen Fuel Cell Prototype has been built. It is the first of 10 intended to be built before the end of the year.

Fuel cells generate electricity by merging hydrogen with oxygen, releasing only water and heat as byproducts. This Hilux’s powertrain uses parts from the Toyota Mirai. The automaker estimates that it has a range of 365 miles between hydrogen refills.

The hydrogen tanks appear to fit between the frame rails, roughly where the cabin does. The additional fuel cell components are located beneath the hood, where the combustion engine is normally found. The battery is located in the back.

The carmaker plans to put the ten prototypes through rigorous testing to ensure the model lives up to the Hilux’s rugged work horse standards. The company is preparing tests for safety, functionality, and durability. They are also using these prototypes to explore the opportunities and risks of a fuel-cell-powered pickup.

Lastly, Toyota is exploring producing a Land Cruiser powered by fuel cells on top of other variants with Plug-in hybrid and all-electric technologies.

ICO to review Period tracker apps over data concerns

0

According to recent reports from BBC, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is currently conducting a review of period and fertility tracking applications due to concerns regarding data security.

These apps operate by charting menstrual cycles based on user-provided information and claim to assist with various menstrual health issues, including determining the optimal time for conception.

The ICO’s review stems from survey evidence revealing that many users are apprehensive about the security of the data they share and the transparency of app developers.

The regulatory body commissioned a poll that found a third of women had utilized these apps to monitor their menstrual cycles or fertility.

Of these users, 59% expressed reservations about data transparency, while 57% were concerned about the security of their submitted information.

Additionally, the research indicated that more than half of app users believed they had observed an increase in advertisements related to babies or fertility after signing up.

While some respondents viewed this marketing positively, 17% described these adverts as distressing.

The deputy commissioner of regulatory policy at the ICO, Emily Keaney emphasized the understandable nature of these concerns, given the highly sensitive and personal information involved.

Ms Keaney stressed the expectation that health apps would prioritize user privacy and implement transparent policies. She stated that the review’s goal is to assess both the positive and negative aspects of the current functioning of these apps.

The ICO’s investigation will encompass several aspects, including whether app privacy policies are overly complex or confusing, leaving users uncertain about the data they’ve consented to share.

The review will also evaluate whether these apps request or store excessive amounts of data and whether users are exposed to distressing targeted advertisements without consent.

The ICO is encouraging app users to share their experiences through a survey on its website and is also conducting focus groups and user testing.

Women’s health groups have offered their support in this endeavour.

“Furthermore, the regulator has reached out to companies providing period and fertility tracking apps, including some of the most popular options available to UK users, to ascertain how they handle users’ personal information,” BBC noted.

Common Legal Challenges for Joliet Businesses Following Car Accidents

0

Did you know that car accidents rank among the foremost causes of injuries and fatalities across the United States? According to the data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the year 2019 saw a staggering 36,096 fatal crashes and 2.74 million injury-related incidents.

If you are a business owner or manager in Joliet, you could find yourself entangled in a complex web of legal intricacies following a car accident involving your employees or company vehicles. These legal challenges, often intricate and bewildering, can become a formidable obstacle to navigate.

This is precisely why you should strongly consider enlisting the support of a seasoned Joliet car accident lawyer.

Potential Legal Hurdles for Joliet Businesses

After a car accident in Joliet, businesses often find themselves entangled in a web of legal complexities. To better grasp these challenges, it’s essential to identify and discuss the most common legal hurdles they might encounter:

1. Liability Disputes:

Liability disputes represent a huge legal obstacle for businesses. The determination of fault in the aftermath of an accident often evolves into a contentious issue.

In numerous instances, businesses find themselves unfairly accused of causing the accident, vehemently asserting their innocence. These disputes have the potential to escalate into prolonged legal battles.

Real-life Example: Picture a Joliet logistics company with delivery trucks. One of their drivers gets into a crash with another vehicle. The other driver says it’s the company’s fault, while the company insists it’s the other driver’s fault. These disagreements, with conflicting viewpoints, can be really hard to solve without legal help.

2. Insurance Claims Complexities:

Dealing with insurance claims can be complex. Insurance policies differ in coverage, deductibles, and exclusions. Businesses may have trouble grasping the details of their policies and might dispute coverage or damage assessments with insurers.

Real-Life Example: Consider a Joliet restaurant that owns a delivery vehicle involved in an accident. They file a claim with their insurance company to cover the vehicle repairs. However, the insurer disputes the claim, asserting that the restaurant’s policy does not cover commercial use, leading to a lengthy claims process.

3. Personal Injury Claims:

If individuals involved in the accident suffer injuries, they may file personal injury claims against the business. These claims can range from minor injuries to severe, life-altering conditions. Handling personal injury claims requires a nuanced understanding of the law and a strategic approach to minimize the business’s liability.

Real-Life Example: Imagine this, a Joliet construction company’s vehicle accidentally hits a pedestrian, leading to severe injuries. In response, the injured person files a lawsuit against the company, alleging negligence. Now, the company is tasked with defending itself in court and potentially working out a settlement.

Apart from personal injuries, accidents often result in property damage, such as damage to vehicles, buildings, or equipment. Determining the extent of this damage and negotiating fair settlements can be a significant legal challenge for businesses.

Real-Life Example: An accident involving a Joliet landscaping company’s truck leads to damage to a client’s property. The client claims extensive damage, including damage to landscaping features. 5 Things You Need To Know Before Filing A Personal Injury Suit

0

Personal injury claims are not as uncommon as you might think. They are also not as straightforward as you might assume. You must be aware of not just the basic principles of a personal injury claim but also the procedures involved.

Before we get into the topic in detail, you must make sure that you take the advice of a legal professional in your area. For instance, if you are in Aurora, you must consult an Aurora personal injury lawyer.

  1. You must file your claim within the prescribed time – This is the most important aspect of filing a personal injury lawsuit. For the layman, there is something called the statute of limitations which prescribes time limits for filing various suits.

This time limit varies from state to state and therefore, it is necessary for you to file your claim within the prescribed time limit applicable to your state. If you do not do so, then your claim may be barred by limitation, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

  1. You should be able to prove negligence – The basic premise of a personal injury claim is that you suffered an injury due to the negligence of another person. But you must remember that negligence stems from a lack of a level of care that any reasonable person would exercise in similar circumstances.

Needless to say, you will need appropriate evidence to support your contentions. If there is a personal injury due to a fire in your workplace and you suffer injuries, then you can find out from the local municipal office whether your employer had the relevant licenses.
  2. You can claim different types of damages – So, in a personal injury claim, there are three types of damages that you can claim:
    1. Economic damages – These include monetary damages that you suffered as a result of the accident.
    2. Non-economic damages – These include damages for the pain and suffering you had to undergo due to the accident.
    3. Punitive damages – Although one can always claim such damages, they are only awarded by the courts where the negligent party’s fault is glaring.
  3. You must be able to prove your damages – As stated above, there are different types of damages that you can claim in a personal injury claim or lawsuit. However, you must remember that unless the other side accepts your claim at the initial stage itself, you will need to prove the same in a court of law.

This means that you must collect and file all the evidence that you have regarding the damages you have suffered. This can include medical bills, lack of employment or earning potential due to the accident, and other similar documents.
  4. Be open to out-of-court settlement – As you must be aware, going to court is a formal process subject to the statute of the state. You need to take steps like engaging an attorney and bear the associated costs.

However, it may not be necessary for you to take the litigation route if you and the other party can sit down and negotiate an out-of-court settlement. This can also be achieved through mediation.

In the case of such a settlement, you must make sure that there is a settlement agreement that takes care of the total amount of compensation that you are agreeable to. Moreover, there must be clauses that protect your right to sue in case the other party defaults on the payment terms.

Lastly, if the payment is made in full at the time of signing the settlement agreement, you must understand that, in most cases, you will not be able to pursue the claim for further damages in a court of law.

Suffering a personal injury is a traumatic experience in itself and can bring you down in life. Filing a personal injury claim or lawsuit requires consideration of both facts and law. While you may be aware of the facts in your case, only an attorney who is experienced in these kinds of matters can guide you properly. This guidance includes not just sharing legal knowledge but also how to prove the facts of your case.

How to Maximise Your Mobile Games Experience in Bitcoin Casinos

0

The Bitcoin cryptocurrency is one of the fastest-growing payment methods used by players around the world to top up their mobile casino accounts.

Here is a closer look at how you can maximise your mobile gaming experience when you next log in to your favourite Bitcoin-accepting online casino to play your favourite games.

Top tips to maximise your mobile games experience at a Bitcoin casino

Here are some useful tips to get the most out of your mobile games experience when you next play at a Bitcoin casino. First, ensure your preferred smartphone or tablet device is fully charged.

There’s nothing worse than being halfway through a spin on your favourite online slot or a game of live dealer casino hold’em, only for your battery to die before the round ends.

Also, make sure your device has a stable Wi-Fi-internet connection. Being disconnected during the action can be really annoying. Here are some more useful tips to help you maximise your mobile casino experience.

More top tips to help you maximise your experience:

  • Carefully select which game you want to play first – online casinos often have somewhere in the region of 1,000 to 4,000 or more games from 30 to 50 or more providers. Do you want to play classic/traditional table & card games, feature-rich online slots, cutting-edge live dealer games, or something else?
  • Learn the rules and then practice before playing – some online casino games, especially the classics, like craps, roulette, and certain card games, may take slightly longer to learn than slots and scratchies (online scratchcards), for example, can be accessed in the free-play mode. A great way to practice would be to launch them in this risk-free mode, to begin with, until you get to grips with the game
  • Gamble responsibly – this means never chasing your losses and staying within the reasonable budget set by you before you start playing. It also means placing sensible wagers on outcomes/results that are more likely to return you a small profit

These commitments encompass a wide range of initiatives aimed at promoting climate change for the future of Africa that include:

Climate Finance

This commitment underscores the bank’s determination to play a crucial role in financing green projects and initiatives across the continent. The sector plans to include mechanisms that will facilitate the scaling up of green investments in the private sector. Green Investment

By incorporating sustainability throughout its value chain, the bank will reduce its ecological footprint and promote eco-friendly practices among its partners and clients.

Decarbonization

African Development Bank  launches $1 billion fund to boost access to climate finance for Africa’s youths

0

African Development Bank has launched a new $1 billion fund to accelerate climate financing for Africa’s youth businesses.

The announcement  was made by African Development Bank  President Akinwumi Adesina during a High-Level Intergenerational Dialogue: Africa Driving Climate Adaptation Solutions and Jobs, held at the Wangari Maathai Institute of Peace and Environment on the outskirts of Nairobi. The institute, funded by the African Development Bank, was officially opened in 2022.

Announcing the $1 billion-dollar additional funding, the Bank chief said African youths didn’t want “little things being doled out to them”. “We have no option but to invest in our youths,” Adesina said.

The additional financing will boost YouthAdapt, a joint initiative between the Bank and the Global Centre on Adaptation. It invites young entrepreneurs and micro, small, and medium enterprises in Africa to submit innovative solutions and business ideas that have the potential to drive climate change adaptation and resilience across the continent.

Over the past two years, YouthAdapt has provided more than $1.5 million to 33 young entrepreneurs across 19 African countries. Some have gone on to raise their profits by 200%.

“Africa’s youth are the present. It is their views and perspectives that are going to change the continent,” Adesina said. “Failing to invest in the youth will hurt Africa, failure is not an option.”

Adesina was joined by the 8th Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki Moon, Graça Machel, Chair of the board of trustees of the Graça Machel Trust  and the African Child Policy Forum , GCA’s CEO Patrick Verkooijen, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports  Ababu Namwamba, Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Norway’s Minister of International Development, Kerrie Simmonds, Minister of Foreign Affairs for Barbados, as well as other dignitaries.

In his remarks, Ban told the youths that, as global citizens, they should not be held back by national boundaries. He urged them to hold their leaders accountable for the promises they make. “Challenge your leaders today. Use your voting power to ensure climate adaptation and finance are a priority.”

Namwamba highlighted some of the initiatives the Kenyan government has launched to drive climate adaptation. “We are recruiting a one million youth Green Army as Climate Action Warriors to support President William Ruto’s ambitious plan to plant 15 billion trees in 10 years.” This, he said, would increase the country’s forest cover from 12% to 30%.

He noted Kenya was the first country to ratify the Sports for Climate Action Initiative under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Under the initiative, sports organisations will be able to pursue climate action in a consistent and mutually supportive fashion through disseminating good practices, lessons learned and collaboration.

The GCA’s Verkooijen said that the choice before Africa was a stark one. “Adapt or die.” Still, he said that the need for adaptation offers opportunity. “We know that if we provide you with the right tools, the right finance, and give voice to the voiceless, you will be unstoppable.”

The event also featured the presentation of the Youth4Adaptation Communiqué, which urges global leaders to make room for the youth in decision making on climate adaptation and action. The communique, reflecting the climate adaptation aspirations of young people from 135 countries worldwide, also urges a scaling up of finance for adaptation with a target of doubling it by 2025.

Adesina and the other dignitaries each planted a tree on the grounds of the Wangari Maathai Institute, named for the renowned environmentalist and Nobel laureate, the late Professor Wangari Maathai. She founded the Green Belt Movement and pursued a community-based approach to environmental conservation – working with young people and particularly women to plant trees.

They expressed admiration at the late Professor Wangari Maathai’s strong legacy of environmental conservation and social justice.

One new Huduma center is proposed for each of the 290 constituencies.

0

The government has committed to opening 290 additional Huduma Centers in response to concerns about poor service delivery made around the nation. This initiative aims to establish a Huduma Center in each and every Kenyan constituency.

There are 52 Huduma Centers currently located all throughout the country. There are five centers in Nairobi, for example, thus the distribution is not even. Some communities will have more than one Huduma Center thanks to the installation of 290 Huduma Centers. This, according to the government, will bring services closer to Kenyans.

The announcement was made at the Shanzu Mombasa location’s first Huduma Center Managers’ Conference. The theme of the conference was “Huduma Kenya in the Digital Era.” In order to improve service delivery, initiatives to digitize government services are in line with the topic.

“Your dedication to innovation hasn’t gone unnoticed,” the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Action said to the managers as she presided over the ceremony. It is definitely wonderful that service delivery has improved and now includes services like Service by Appointment and Track My Service.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that some Kenyans need more in-person support, notably those who are digitally challenged and people with impairments. She therefore urged the Huduma Centre administrators to keep an eye out for guests who needed assistance and provide it right away.

However, a few members of the public have voiced complaints about delays. A select handful have vented on social media.

Nevertheless, Huduma Kenya has implemented a number of changes aimed at enhancing service performance. They have increased call center hours, set appointments to visit centers, and extended operating hours in 18 high-traffic centers only this year. They have also updated their website.

290 additional Huduma centers will strengthen the current advancements even more. The cabinet secretary reminded her audience that this proposal would be implemented with the help of parliament. This is because parliamentary approval will be required for the budget.

Government starts search for the Universal Service Advisory Council Board Members

0

The Kenyan government has started the search for new members of the Universal Service Advisory Council (USAC), a process that, when completed, will end the three-year vacancy in the positions.

Through the Public Service Commission, the government today advertised the positions of chairperson and eight board members of the Universal Service Advisory Council  (USAC).

“Applications are invited from suitably qualified Kenyans wishing to be considered for nomination to the post of chairperson or member of the Universal Service Advisory Council,” stated the PSC advertisement.

USAC provides strategic policy guidance for the administration and implementation of the Universal Service Fund (USF) which was set up in 2013 to support widespread access, capacity building, and innovation in information and communications technology services.

The USF draws its finances from contributions from telecommunication service providers, broadcasters, and postal and courier operators, who are required to remit 0.5 percent of their gross annual turnover into the fund.

The Authority undertook ICT access gap studies in 2016 and 2021 to determine access to ICTs by the public in all areas of the country. To redress the access gaps, the authority has undertaken a number of projects and initiated several others for implementation.

Some of the projects include the deployment of mobile telecommunications infrastructure and services in unserved and underserved areas in Kenya and broadband connectivity to public secondary schools. Others are the open education resources with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development KICD, the provision of digital content for learners with print disabilities in collaboration with KIB, and the digital dissemination of agricultural content in collaboration with Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization KALRO. Automation of the police occurrence book in Nairobi with the National Police Service NPS and automation of some court stations in Kenya with the judiciary are some of the ongoing USF projects.

In the mobile voice infrastructure, the Authority has connected 127 sublocations, and projects are ongoing in 118 sublocations. The project has so far ensured mobile connectivity coverage for over 700,000 Kenyans.

Tesla and all top automakers could be affected by a 52 million air bag inflators recall by US agency

Automakers in the US might soon have to recall more than 50 million vehicles according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is after the agency published its Initial Decision that certain airbag inflators manufactured by ARC and Delphi should be recalled.

If the recall is carried out, BMW, Ford, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen will all be required to recall the impacted vehicles. The suspected airbag inflators were manufactured between 2000 and 2018. During that time period, ARC produced 41 million inflators, whereas Delphi produced 11 million before ceasing production in 2004.

Since 2016, the NHTSA has been examining claims of rupturing airbag inflators from the two firms. The agency requested that ARC begin a recall in April, but the firm declined. According to the Initial Decision, the agency believes that the friction welding procedure used to connect the inflator’s upper and lower pressure vessels can generate slag that can obstruct the inflator exit during airbag deployment. If the slag is large enough, it can cause the inflator to over-pressurize and burst, resulting in shrapnel and metal shards entering the passenger compartment.

So far, seven individuals have been reported injured and one person has been died as a result of rupturing inflators. The first incidence occurred in 2009, with the most recent occurring in March 2023 in a Chevrolet Traverse. People have been wounded in vehicles manufactured by Kia, Chrysler, Hyundai, and Volkswagen.

On October 5, the NHTSA will hold a public meeting, which will be livestreamed, enabling ARC and others to argue that the inflators do not have a safety issue. The government agency did not specify when it will make a final decision.

Aurora Tech Awards 2024 Entries Now Open To Empower Women in Tech

0

Aurora Tech Awards, a global annual celebration of women founders of IT startups who are breaking boundaries and shattering stereotypes in the tech world has announced that entries for the 2024 Awards are now open.

The award’s mission is threefold: to applaud the strides of women in IT entrepreneurship, to empower them with the resources they deserve through substantial cash prizes, and to shatter the very gender biases that have long confined the industry.

“In a tech world still grappling with gender disparity, awards like the Aurora Tech Award are catalysts for change. Our recognition empowers women, shattering barriers and inspiring young minds. The positive feedback from past winners resonates with the transformative impact. As applications pour in globally, we’re excited to spotlight talents making community-changing impacts and serving as role models. We envision a future where gender ceases to limit potential. This award isn’t just a recognition; it’s a step towards a more inclusive and innovative tomorrow” says Ekaterina Smirnova, executive director of the Aurora Tech Award.

The significant shift in Africa’s technological landscape became undeniably evident during the 2023 Aurora Tech Award. A large portion of the nominations highlighted the achievements of African women in tech from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda, all of whom helm IT startups that have rendered immense value to their communities.

These visionary women not only harnessed technology to bridge the gap between communities and essential educational, health, and financial services but also fervently supported fellow entrepreneurs in their pursuits. The 2023 award was ultimately won by Elizabeth Mwangi from Kenya and her startup, Gwiji for Women, which connects cleaners living in the slums of Nairobi with their clients.

The Aurora Tech Award heralds a future where innovation knows no gender and where women’s potential flourishes uninhibited. It’s not just about breaking glass ceilings; it’s about forging an industry that stands as a testament to the capabilities of all, regardless of gender.
